Though Maldives was culturally influenced by other traditions, Maldivians have built and preserved an exclusive cultural identity. The PARLEY air Strategy THE OCEANS GIVE US LIFE. WE GIVE THEM PLASTIC. LET’S INVENT OUR WAY OUT OF THIS. TOGETHER.
Parley air is the strategy to end the fast-growing threat of marine plastic pollution. We believe plastic is a design failure, one that can only be solved by reinventing the material itself. To create change, we can stop producing more plastic right away and use up-cycled marine plastic waste instead. Everyone has a role to play.
HERE ARE THE PROBLEMS OUR OCEANS FACE An estimated 8 million metrics tons of plastic trash ends up in our oceans every year. The ocean currents have formed five gigantic, slow moving whirlpools where the plastic collects, called gyres. Most of the plastic debris sinks or remains in the gyres, however a significant percentage of it washes onto our coastlines daily.
Avoid Plastic Wherever Possible Intercept Plastic Waste Redesign The Material Itself After sunlight photodegrades the plastic into small pieces, aquatic life and seabirds mistake these fragments for food and ingest it. while it’s difficult to know exact figures, a 2012 report from WSPA indicates that between 57,000 and 135,000 whales are entangled by plastic marine debris every year in addition to the inestimable – but likely millions – of birds, turtles, fish and other species affected by plastic marine debris. New studies show that ingested plastic damages the internal organs of fish. This raises the question about the safety of our seafood.

MISSION Plastic Is A Design Failure. We Can Only End The Problem With A New Material. In The Meantime We Save Marine Wildlife By Cleaning Up Shorelines And Oceans And Cut Into The Production Of New, Virgin Plastic.
THE APPROACH: AIR: AVOID. INTERCEPT. REDESIGN.
If we fail to clean up the plastic and stop the continued pollution of the oceans, we are facing the potential extinction of many sea life species and the interruption of the entire ecosystem. We also risk the health of anyone who eats seafood.
The majority of the plastic in our oceans is broken into small pieces 1/4 of an inch or smaller and scattered over massive areas. The center of a vortex, where the plastic concentration is highest, is constantly moving. It is difficult to collect and retrieve this plastic without harming fish and other sea life. Only a minority of plastic pollution floats on or near the surface, while the majority sinks to the ocean floor. While it still seems impossible to clean up the vortexes, huge volumes of plastic debris wash up on beaches and shorelines, where it can be collected relatively easily and without complex technology by the global parley network of cleanup organizations. Awareness campaigns, cleanup operations and recycling initiatives allow us to help alleviate immediate threats to marine wildlife and reduce the use of virgin plastics in product design, manufacturing and distribution. In close collaboration with major brands, we also work to reduce overall plastic use. But we can only end marine plastic pollution in the long run if we invent smarter materials and synchronize the economic system of mankind with the ecosystem of nature. Therefore parley with its global expert network is operating an extensive research and development program to invent alternatives and to establish new industry standards.

“I want to be plastic!” Andy Warhol’s phrase expresses the fascination for a seemingly perfect material. It is sleek, comes in any color possible, looks stunning when brand new and can have specific performance features, which makes it very hard to replace. The truth is, plastic is a design failure. Therefore it is best to avoid plastic and use alternative materials. If not possible, then the use of recycled material is the second best option. It helps to cut down the production of virgin plastic. Parley works closely with its corporate partners to reduce and replace plastic in consumption, production and distribution, and on educational programs for employees, partners and consumers.
We see the key to ending marine plastic pollution in collaboration. Nobody can solve this problem alone. We need to approach it from different angles and in a multidisciplinary way. The responsibility lies with the creative industries, followed by major brands, environmentalists, and finally by consumers.
Ocean plastic®- Turning products into symbols of change
The primary mission of parley for the oceans is to save as many animals as possible. The global parley network of cleanup organizations achieves this by removing plastic from shorelines and ghost nets from the high seas. In remote areas, we establish systems to intercept plastic waste before it ends up in landfills, gets burned, buried or tossed into rivers or oceans. We don’t see recycling as the ultimate solution for plastic pollution, but keeping plastic that has been already produced in use as a replacement for virgin plastic reduces emissions and waste. Together with its corporate partners, parley develops programs which cut into plastic production and drive longer-term solutions. Today, a sexy product made in an eco-innovative way can be the most efficient advertising for a cause. It is a proof of concept for new technologies or materials and creates strong media attention. Additionally, parley partner products made with ocean plastic® reposition recycling materials as desirable and contribute to the funding of air. An extensive research and development program focuses on up-cycling of marine plastic debris, prevention and interception of micro plastic, and new models that can disrupt traditional plastic product categories. To end the cycle of plastic pollution for good, parley and its partners are working on the development of new materials which can replace current plastic.
“It took centuries to create the mess. No magic bullet will solve it overnight. It will take time, creativity, and hard work.” - John warner, founder of green chemistry

At first, the idea of encountering an elephant underwater seems rather strange. After all, these huge mammals are adapted for life in the jungle, not below the waves. If you think about it, however, with their long, flexible “snorkel” of a trunk, there are few land animals that are better suited for an aquatic existence. Enter Rajan, India’s famous swimming elephant. Widely celebrated for his willingness to pose for underwater photographers, this gentle giant was born in southern India around 1950, then brought to the remote Andaman Islands as a young adult to labour in the logging industry. His life was not easy but Rajan did find time for romance, eventually meeting a female with whom he was clearly smitten¬. Relationships between the sexes are typically fleeting affairs with elephants, but their case must have been an exception, as the two were seen together frequently over the years. The female was an avid swimmer and Rajan soon followed suit, often joining her for a refreshing dip in the sea after work. Swimming was also something of a job requirement as the logging companies occasionally swam their elephants between neighbouring islands, rather than hiring barges to transport them. The pair lived happily together for several decades, until a few years ago the female was bitten by a cobra and succumbed to complications. Grief stricken, Rajan was inconsolable and slipped into a deep depression for more than a year following her death. Normally a hard worker, he became disinclined towards his log-hauling duties, and therefore useless to his employers. With no hint of when or if he might get his mojo back, the elephant’s future looked grim. Fortunately for Rajan, it was about this time that movie director Tarsem Singh heard about his affinity for the sea and tentatively cast him in a film called The Fall. Rajan’s then-current location was not suitable for the shoot so arrangements were made to move him to Havelock, an idyllic, mostly undeveloped island in the central Andamans. Apparently, the surroundings and job description agreed with him and Rajan gradually regained his former joie de vivre.
After filming was completed for the movie, the photogenic pachyderm settled easily into the sleepy pace of life on Havelock, spending much of his time foraging in the forest with his mahout (handler). Before long, however, his owners announced their intention to ship him back to the mainland, where he would likely have spent his remaining years chained to a temple wall. Thankfully, the owners of Barefoot Resort, who’d been looking after him during his time on Havelock, came to the rescue. The elephant’s owners had demanded a huge sum for the animal, so the resort enlisted Rajan to raise the money via paid photo sessions with visiting divers. Averaging only a few sessions each month, Rajan eventually raised enough cash to earn his freedom, and officially retired from underwater modelling in 2014. Since then, he could often be seen wandering in the forest near the resort, enjoying his well-deserved retirement while entertaining visitors and locals alike. Rajan recently passed away at the ripe old age of 66. To find out more about diving in India, join at the ADEX INDIA MUMBAI DIVE SHOW 2019 from October 4 to 6 2019 at THE LaLiT, Mumbai, India.

AS Coast Craft 37 Mr. Ismail shareef, Operations manager at Al Shaali Marine Maldives shares his joy and explains about the popular tourist transport vessel AS Coast Craft 37 which has yet again won the title of The Best Production Fibre 40-27ft Vessel of the Year at the Maldives Boating Award held on the 23rd December 2018 at Dharubaaruge. Most upmarket resorts in the Maldives have been using the AS Coast Craft 37 due to its comfort, design, the smooth ride and stability in water. As we ask Mr.Ismail Shareef to talk to us about the AS Coast Craft 37, He starts of with a brief introduction of the vessel “AS Cost Craft 37 is a speedboat that was designed in 2011 and introduced to the Maldivian Market in 2012. After our design and completion, We only started to sell the craft around 2013/2014. But it was not before 2016 after some minor improvements and alterations were made to the craft, that the Maldivian market started to really perceive and appreciate the AS Coast Craft 37 for the good quality boat that it is.” “As a result we started building and producing the craft per the market demand and the following year, the AS Coast Craft 37 was awarded as the Best Production Fibre Vessel as well as the Best Designer Boat at Boating Awards 2017. The minimum recommended engine horse power is twin 250 engines. 350 hp engines can also be used while a triple isolate engine can also be installed if the customers request.” With great enthusiasm he explains that the craft is always custom made for the speci-fications of each individual customer “As Al Shaali is a company that provides total boating solutions and services for its custom-

Record breaking Mantas moments Based at Landaa Giraavaru, The Maldivian Manta Ray Project (the founding project of The Manta Trust) has been going on since 2006. Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru Team caught up with its Founder, Dr. Guy Stevens, and Project Leader, Tam Sawers, to get the lowdown on a record-breaking 2018 season.

Floating Asia 2018

Tam, we hear it’s been a recordbreaking manta season in Baa Atoll. What have been the highlights? It’s been one of our best research years to date with a record 4400-sightings between June and November (almost twice as many as last year), including visible baby bumps on familiar individuals like Turtle, Bongella, Spongecake and Ice, plus a record number of pup sightings. We’ve seen some incredible somersault shows and even a game of hide and seek with a whale shark disappearing behind and then reappearing in between 40-50 mantas. On one particular day we spotted 150+ cyclone-feeding mantas, three whale sharks, and a giant oceanic manta – all in Hanifaru Bay Marine Protected Area. I don’t think there was a single more spectacular moment of natural beauty witnessed anywhere else in the world’s oceans at that time. It really is #betterinbaa.
What new projects have you been working on? This year we raised funds to create and deploy underwater cameras at select manta cleaning stations to enable uninterrupted, long-term monitoring of cleaning behaviour relating to time of day, tidal cycles, lunar phases etc. We have also started using a 3D stereo video system technique to measure manta body sizes more accurately. Congratulations on hosting the first Baa Atoll Manta Festival in Dharavandoo too – how did it all go? It was the first Manta Festival in the entire archipelago and involved 11 schools, 12 luxury tourist resorts, NGOs, environmental organisations and everything from interactive educational stalls to Maldivian celebrity performances. It was a huge success with over 1000 visitors, capped by the participating resorts donating snorkel equipment to all 11 schools in the Baa Atoll.
Guy, it must be amazing to see how far The Manta Trust has come. Can you share with us how it all started? It began in 2003-5 while I was working as a Marine Biologist on Four Seasons Explorer. Guests often asked me about mantas. I realised that there was virtually no information available and perhaps I could be the person to begin to answer some of the questions. The project officially launched with the opening of Landaa Giraavaru in 2006. What’s the most unusual thing you have discovered? We believe that manta rays may be using vibrations in the ocean (underwater sound waves) to communicate. We think they do this by jumping out of the water, creating a ‘radiating’ splash to signal a feeding opportunity, like ringing a dinner bell! We are also working on a theory that females breach ( jump out of the water) to let males know they are available for mating. Any special encounters?
Tam Sawers, Project Leader, Manta Trust – Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Baa Atoll
What were the expectations at the time? Relatively small. I was hoping to undertake some preliminary research into population size and threats to the individuals that I was seeing. I never imagined we would get external funding and how it would all grow.
There’s one particular event that I describe in detail in my book Manta: Secret Life of Devil Rays that will stay with me forever. There was a wounded individual in clear distress, heavily entangled in fishing line. I was able to cut the line wrapped around its body and free it, but the really fascinating thing for me was seeing the animal, in subsequent days, and witnessing the way it behaved towards me: it would come over and interact with me – whereas it wasn’t doing the same with other divers in the vicinity at the time. It was able to seemingly acknowledge that I, the giant cleaner fish-man, was the individual who had cut it free. We know that mantas have the largest brains of all fish and that their curiosity and social behaviour are all indications of intelligence but that experience made me feel they are able to recognize human beings individually, and perceive things around them to a much greater degree than we think.
When and how did it evolve into The Manta Trust? In 2007 I received my first funding for specific research activities, enabling me to work with other ‘manta’ colleagues: Dr. Robert Rubin and Dr. Tim Clark from the US. We collaborated, met up, and I expanded my research focus beyond the Maldives, visiting Sri Lanka where mantas were routinely fished. The time came for a more cohesive structure and conservation-based organisation under which we could all operate. That’s when I set out to register The Manta Trust as a charity in the UK in 2011.
What has the research highlighted so far? For the Maldives, most importantly, it’s helped us understand key life history questions – life span, reproduction, sexual maturity and population size – that were the core focus for my PhD thesis. We are pretty confident that at any one time the population of reef manta rays in Maldives is around 4000 individuals; that females give birth on average to one pup every 5 years; that males mature at 10-11 years old and females at 15-16 years; and that they live to around 40. It takes mantas a long time to reach an age when they can reproduce, making them very vulnerable to threats. Information like this can be applied to the entire global manta ray population to help us understand how to effectively manage it and safeguard it for the future.

Best Places for Swimming & Diving with Whale Sharks
Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the ocean and one of the most gentle and majestic creatures to see underwater. Considered the biggest fish in the world, the whale shark is a cold blooded cartilaginous fish like any other shark. It breathes through gills. Its tail is vertical and moves from one side to another when it swims, unlike warm-blood animals (mammals) which have parallel tails and breathe through lungs like the whale, dolphin and dugong. Whale sharks can weigh over 9 tons and grow up to 12 metres in length, although there are questionable, unconfirmed sightings of specimens up to 18 metres in length. They can generally be found in the entire Indian Ocean in depths of up to 130 metres. The whale shark is easily recognised by its immense size and a 2-tone pattern of light spots and lines on a dark brown dorsal surface. Unlike that of most other sharks its enormous mouth is terminal in position and can be opened wide to filter large amounts of water for small fish, squid, crustaceans, and other plankton organisms. Their skin can be over 10 cm thick. Find the best whale shark diving locations around the world and the best time to swim and scuba dive with them.

Swimming & Diving with Whale Sharks in Indonesia
Imagine you are lost in the middle of the Indian Ocean and on a desert island that you can explore in just a few minutes of walking. Inside there is a tropical forest along with palm trees that provide you with shade. White coral sand and turquoise seas stretch out before your eyes. Underwater exists a marine paradise rich in everything imaginable, such as turtles, colorful schools of fish, manta rays, dolphins and whale sharks. These are the Maldives, 1,192 coral islands divided into 26 atolls. Along the southern edge of the South Ari Atoll, “small” whale sharks (from 3 to 8 meters) come to feed and grow, staying about two months on average. These warm tropical waters allow them to find lots of food and an environment without predators.
Cenderawasih Bay is a large, sheltered bay in West Papua which belongs to Indonesia. Gorgeous reefs and shipwrecks from World War II can be found in these warm, tropical waters. Moreover, this tourist destination is still being explored by scuba divers, meaning you may be one of the first people to dive any given dive site. To make a trip to Cenderawasih Bay even more memorable, scuba divers should ensure at least one whale shark dive. These graceful giants exhibit a rare feeding pattern in this part of Indonesia. They suck on the bottom of fishing nets, extracting the delicious small fish. Because this pattern is known, seeing whale sharks in Cenderawasih Bay is nearly guaranteed.
Whale Shark Season in The Maldives
Whale Shark Season in Indonesia
Whale sharks are present in equal numbers all year round. Early May to late September is the ‘wet season,’ a period of sustained southwesterly winds which may or may not lead to periods of poor weather. The proximity to the equator means temperatures rarely venture below 82°F (28°C).
Whale sharks can be seen in Cenderawasih Bay year-round, but the most liveaboards visit the area from August to October, making this peak whale shark season.

Sailing a catamaran means enjoying all the exhilaration of yachting on a more stable platform. This is the kind of boat you can take anywhere in the world and have a comfortable home. The hull flare/chin above the waterline contribute longitudinal stiffness and reserve buoyancy in the ends and
adds critical interior volume while keeping hulls below the waterline narrow and easy to drive. Our catamarans have a four double-cabin configurations including a forepeak bunk in the forward cabins- perfect for sleeping 8-10 in absolute comfort.
