The “Big 5” set to challenge Josh Kerr for the Surfing Champions Trophy crown
The Indian Ocean’s hottest surf invitational, the news is out that surfing legends Joel Parkinson (AUS), Kai Lenny (HAW), Wiggolly Dantas (BRZ), Matt Wilkinson (AUS) and Maldivian wildcard Mohamed Fayaz are booked to take on defending champion Josh Kerr (AUS) in the world’s most luxurious annual surfing contest: Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy held at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa. Bringing a promising mix of style, creativity and big wave prowess, the new announcements are set to seriously ramp up the competition at the epic one-of-a-kind event, which tests some of the world’s hottest surfing names, past and present, across three different divisions: single-fin, twin-fin, and triple-fin thruster.

Event coordinator Mark Winson of Tropicsurf comments
We’re extremely excited about the assemblage of surfers in this year’s event. With such a diverse and talented field competing, you can be sure that there will be some amazing surfing taking place. We’re in for a real treat.
ARTICLE/SURFING CHAMPIONS TROPHY
Introducing Parkinson, Lenny, Dantas, Wilkinson and Fayaz: Joel Parkinson (AUS) “Parko” grew up surfing on Queensland’s Gold Coast. At just 18 years old, Parko stunned the surfing world by winning his first World Tour event as a wildcard, which set the scene for a remarkable career. During his nearly two-decade ride, he racked up 12 World Tour event wins and a host of major milestones including: four runner-up finishes on the World Tour (2002, 2004, 2009 and 2011); the ASP World Title in 2012; and a perfect heat at the Oakley Bali Pro in 2013, skillfully pairing two perfect 10 rides. More than that, he’s a fun, laid back lovable guy, and one of the sport’s most stylish and naturally gifted surfers, blending power with grace and finesse. Parkinson shares, “Surfing at an event like the Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy is an opportunity I could not pass up on given my love for the Maldives and having fun. The Maldives is one of my favourite surf spots in the world and as a holiday destination it doesn’t get more amazing for a surfer and his family. Now my kids are older we are making this contest into a family project and I am coming to win the Four Seasons Surfing Champions Trophy to show them Dad can still mix it with the best of them.”
Kai Lenny (HAW) Happiest on a wave – and true to his name, which means “ocean” – Kai Lenny grew up on Maui’s northern shore, riding all manner of boards: kite-boards, windsurfs, stand-up paddle-boards and, of course, surf boards, riding his first wave aged four. Undeniably one of the world’s greatest water-men, at 26 year old Kai is pushing the boundaries of big wave surfing, recently being awarded Men’s Best Overall Performance and Men’s XXL Biggest Wave at the World Surf League Big Wave Awards. Lenny’s talents, however, aren’t confined to big wave surfing, with the young Hawaiian being an accomplished short boarder who’ll be looking to showcase his full repertoire on the speedy walls of Sultans.
Wiggolly Dantas (BRZ) A goofy footed, big waver lover from Ubatuba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Dantas’ surfing initiation happened at the tender age of three when his brother would repeatedly push him into their local breaks (their mum owned a shop on the beach, so the sand and waves were their playground). It wasn’t long before he was taking his brother’s board when he wasn’t using it. He first competed at the age of six and has been gunning to be the best surfer in the world ever since, joining the World Surfing League in 2015. Hugely respected in the sport and known for his humble yet fiercely competitive nature, watch out for Wiggolly’s powerful rail game, lightning fast reflexes and critical backhand attack.

Matt Wilkinson (AUS)
Mohamed Fayaz (MV)
One of the world’s most free-spirited surfers, Australian goofy footer Wilko finished in the top five of the Championship Tour in 2016 and 2017, transforming from offbeat party boy to title contender. Raised near Avoca Beach, New South Wales, he spent his formative years catching breaks on Copacabana Beach and traversing the coast with his dad in their van, participating in surfing contests. A savvy competitor from a young age, he joined the CT in 2010 and quickly established his position within the upper echelon of surfing, taking the surf world by storm with epic back-to-back victories at the start of the 2016 season (and the legendary bar tab that followed at Bells!). The life of the party on and off the waves, Wilko will bring a unique splash of creativity to this year’s event.
Hailing from the Maldives’ capital city Malé, Pelé (as locals affectionately know him) grew up surfing nearby Raalhugandu. Rookie of the Tournament in his very first contest – which took place in China, far from his familiar home surf – Pelé went on to compete in multiple WSL QS competitions held in the Maldives from 2001 to 2005, securing the national title in 2003. A bad knee injury in 2007 temporarily sidelined this regular footer, who made a comeback in 2014 and spends his spare time working for a nationwide surf development program. As a local surf guide, no one knows the home swells better than Pelé. Keep an eye out for his impressive rail work, surfing with a beautiful floor.
Wilko comments: “I’m so excited to experience the luxury of Four Seasons Resort Kuda Huraa while surfing an event with an emphasis on fun. It’s rare to be able to enjoy such amazing waves without too much pressure and to be able to bring some of the historic surfboard shapes back to life.”

Fans can get up close to the action with onboard VIP passes while the surf tour experience continues with nightly cocktail events back at Kuda Huraa, which plays host to the contest’s competitors, judges and Tropicsurf partners (the pros behind the Resort’s surf operation).
Maldives’ Most Stunning Underwater Dining Experiences Most dining options that span the spectrum across the Maldives offer backdrops by the blissful island shores or are set on stilts above the Indian Ocean. These are incredible, but if you’re on the lookout for something even more exhilarating, then you might want to seek a dining experience underwater with an out of this world view. Having a luxury meal while surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass windows can seem slightly terrifying – but you also get to appreciate the beauty of marine life in its natural habitat and, more importantly, the Instagrammability alone will make it worth your investment, all while sort of feeling like a mermaid
Ithaa Undersea Restaurant at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
The 5.8 Undersea Restaurant at Hurawalhi Maldives
Sea at Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas
The world’s first underwater restaurant, Ithaa (translates ‘mother of pearl’ in the Maldivian language of Dhivehi), sits a whopping five meters below sea level, offering 180-degree views of the surrounding coral gardens. To get there, diners walk across a pier, descends a spiral staircase down into a coral reef through a glass tunnel with a curved glass roof. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to midnight every day and serves contemporary European cuisine while diners are able to spot all kinds of tropical fish and enjoy a four-course lunch or a six-course dinner. Ithaa is also open for mid-morning cocktails and can be booked privately for breakfast, weddings or other special occasions.
Opened in late 2016, this is currently the world’s largest all-glass underwater restaurant and is made of dislodged coral blocks which makes its own ecosystem. As the restaurant’s name implies, it sits at a depth of 5.8 meters below the surface. To get there, diners walk across a pier towards the resort’s over-water Aquarium Restaurant and head down a separate path to a long, winding staircase. The restaurant offers 10 tables in an intimate setting with surrounding coral landscape views that intrigues all shapes and sizes of sea life right up to the glass. Diners can sate their appetite among the sealife with a multicourse tasting extravaganza. The restaurant is open for lunch with two sittings, first at 12.00 and second at 14.00, and dinner at 18.00. The restaurant also serves private Champagne breakfast upon request.
Built on the edge of a natural reef right near the deep sea, this is the world’s first underwater wine cellar and leads diners to a fine-dining restaurant surrounded by the sea. Schools of angelfish can be seen swarming around the hexagonal space surfaced with mirrors, through swaying soft corals that dapple with sunlight. The wine cellar boasts over 450 bottles from two dozen countries and counting. Diners can enjoy a wide selection of special homemade breads, pancakes, and coffee for breakfast. Canadian scallops, assorted fish, Maldivian lobster, and prawns for lunch; Pair rare vintages with appetizing pan-seared Japanese wagyu for a romantic dinner. The restaurant is open for breakfast from 8:30 am – 10:30 pm, lunch from 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm and dinner from 6:30 pm – 10:30 pm.

Located 545 yards from the Niyama Resort, Subsix sits six meters below the Indian Ocean. It is the world’s first underwater nightclub and are frequented by international DJs who spin their discs for their patrons, as they dance beneath the waves. Diners reach Subsix by speedboat and descends down a dramatic three-tier staircase. Italian abstract chandeliers illuminate the descent like shining coral, a clam-inspired bar with chairs in the shape of anemones and capiz shells draped from the ceiling. The restaurant serves lunch between 12:00 noon and 2.30pm, also serves private Champagne breakfast as ‘Destination Dining’ experiences upon request.
This is the resort’s pièce de résistance! M6M is an acronym for “minus six meters” and diners reach the restaurant by descending down a winding staircase into a blue-hued area. Diners can choose between three set menus, which include five delicately presented courses. The restaurant’s popular dishes include citrus-doused octopus carpaccio, chilean sea bass with confit tomatoes and lobster thermidore. It is open for lunch and dinner, though the visibility is better during the day when thousands of fish (and maybe an eel or baby shark) dart behind the windows.
The resort’s premier fine dining restaurant, H2O by LAGO is named after the chemical formula for water in a bid to promote its responsible image. The restaurant is located 100 meters from the island, and sits fully submerged six meters under the lagoon. The restaurant offers 360-degree views of Raa Atoll’s breath-taking coral gardens and incredible marine environment and treats diners with unrivalled gourmet cuisine catering 26 guests at once.

A LIFE AFLOAT A French family’s love for the Maldivian seas It all began in 1988, I was working at a resort as a sailing and windsurfing instructor and that is where I met my lovely wife. I got bored on the resort after six months, just sitting on the beach and looking at the islands far away. I thought to myself, this is an island nation and the best mode to travel around is by boat, from one island to the other and could be the next best thing for me instead of sitting on an island and stay for too long. So, after six months I resigned and I rented a small boat to do a few charters. I have always been driven to live close to nature and for me the best way to do it was to take a boat and travel around. At the beginning, I had a small operation, just taking people to the airport and BBQs at Kuda Bandos and people would stay with me. It was not comfortable because there was no electricity, bed, fresh water or cabins. Everyone had to sleep on the deck with sleeping bags or on a beach.
David Mesnard, opened doors to a new dimension with “Ocean Divine”, the first Maldives’ built live-aboard in 2003 with operations that began with 12 carpenters in 2006 on the island of Huraa in Kaafu Atoll. One of the unique elements of the project was that the boat was not built using a lot machinery, especially during a time when the Maldives did not have boatyards. Every boat has a story, this one filled with tremendous challenges we sat with David to hear his journey.

We had about 40 vessels in the Maldives in 2003, and if you look at now, there are over 170, small, luxury, and big. Twelve years ago, I incorporated certain design elements, which compliments the success and luxury of Ocean Divine staying afloat with a family living onboard today. Firstly, I believe Ocean Divine is currently the only boat where a family is living on it, and with our 9-year-old daughter who was born in France and came to the Maldives at the age of 1 month, and has been living onboard with us all her life.

In 2006, when my wife and I made the decision to have a child, we were already on the boat. She was very positive and brave to decide to raise a child on the boat. Because not every woman would make this decision, and not every woman will agree it as a suitable life for a child. For example, if the child gets sick, the doctor could be miles away since we are the middle of the ocean. So, in terms of having the child onboard and raising her on the vessel, I have a lot of respect for my wife. Moreover, my daughter has never been seriously sick, that we had to go to land and now she 9 years meaning she has lived 9 years on the boat. It is such a gift for a child to have this lifestyle. We could not see ourselves establishing in one island or having a house, or going to school on one island because from day one, we wanted to bring the education, we wanted to teach our daughter onboard to the highest level. I have designed this space of almost 60 sqm where we could gather as a family. This is also where my daughter has her lessons, 3 hours of French and 3 hours of English. And having a child onboard means that the child absorbs so much information each week. She can talk to anyone on the boat and therefore learn

about different backgrounds. One of the most important things for my daughter is that she learnt to swim since she was four, and dives since she was 5. She dives with the sharks, whale sharks and mantas, but she does not know how to ride a bicycle for example, but she is not afraid of the ocean. She interacts with the whole crew and loves all of them and I believe growing up on this boat will be a too which will help her for the rest of her life. Ocean Divine has enough room to accommodate, 13 crew, 14 to 16 guests and 2 diving instructors. I built the boat and I believe I should be on it to know how exactly to run it. We never wait to replace parts, and we replace it before they break and I think that is the essence and also the advice I would give to the community. Maintenance is super important, because you can build a boat, but if you do not maintain it, within 3-4 years, the boat can be almost underwater. This is because we fight with the elements of nature, rough seas, sun, and rain. Like a resort, we are very vulnerable to these elements and have to constantly be aware of what is going on the boat. You have to know your boat and you also have to maintain it the right way. Therefore,
ARTICLE/A LIFE AFLOAT
when you get a profit out of your operations, instead of investing it to another operation, we focus on the maintanence of our boat. Just like if you look at this boat, it has been running for 12 years straight, so of course we put a lot of money onto protecting our investment, so we can provide the same quality of service as its first day. And for this, there is nothing better than to have the owner onboard and it is a huge advantage. This is also one of the reasons why we have many repeat customers, 70% of our clientele being repeat customers. It is a difficult business to keep the clients coming back, at the same time challenging to keep the crew happy and trained on a vessel. Our goal for the crew is to keep them trained, but to avoid turnover, but also to also keep them happy on our boat. We give them way more than just a pay cheque for this. We want to make sure they fulfill their dreams and the dreams of their family members too. Our current captain, Mr. Ibrahim Hassan has been with us for more than 10 years, he is one of the best in this industry in the Maldives, if not the best, very faithful and loyal. He is just one of the examples of the crew who
has been working on the boat for so long and we have entrusted him. They know the boat very well and they know us very well. They are the ones who have given us this lifestyle, because I did not give myself this lifestyle. They are the ones who made this possible, thus, I believe, in order to run a liveaboard, when you make a decision, it is very important to think of your crew, just as you think of your guests, because without the crew, nothing is possible. Now we have decided to change our lifestyle over the next year or next two. We are currently searching for a buyer because we have decided to sell our boat. It is a tough decision, but one we made for our daughter, and it’s going to break our hearts to leave the Maldives. However, we believe this is the right decision and the boat is in top-notch condition. Ocean divine is definitely a boat where a family can live in, and operate onboard. There is an office, a large living room, and we have 12 people to take care of the boat and the guests.

BABAGANOUSH RETURNS Miraculous Manta Ray Recovery
One of the Maldives best known and loved manta rays, Babaganoush (MV-MA-0033), surprised and delighted Manta Trust researchers this week when he reappeared at a popular tourist spot, six months after sustaining what were thought to be fatal injuries from a speedboat strike.
In November 2018, Babaganoush was filmed by the Manta Trust in Hanifaru Bay, having suffered horrific injuries from a speedboat strike. Manta rays are vulnerable to boat strikes in the Maldives whilst feeding or travelling at the Ocean surface, especially outside of the few small protected areas that exist where boat speed restrictions are in place. Baba sustained some of the worst injuries the Manta Trust team have ever recorded on a living manta ray; the boat’s propeller had cut so deep into his body cavity that his internal organs were exposed. Incredibly, on the 4th May, after six months without any sightings, Babaganoush made a triumphant return to Hanifaru Bay looking healthy and extremely well healed. The Manta Trust team could not be happier that he has survived! These records illustrate the remarkable ability of manta rays to resist infection and heal, allowing them to survive (at least sometimes) injuries that we’d assumed would prove fatal. However, it also illustrates the negative indirect impacts which humans are increasingly having on these species globally, even in countries where they are lucky enough to receive national protections from fishing and other direct threats. 34
Floating Asia 2019

“We are thrilled that Babaganoush is alive and well, but unfortunately many other manta rays, sea turtles, and whale sharks are not so lucky. Each year, as speedboat traffic significantly increases in the Maldives, where little-to-no speed limits are in place throughout much of the country, the nation’s marine life faces a serious threat from the unregulated impacts of rapid human development. Urgent actions are therefore needed by the Maldives government to implement effective management regulations, especially at key megafauna aggregation sites, and along migratory corridors. On land, drivers are not allowed to drive their cars as fast as they want through a national park or urban areas, so why does the same principle not apply inside a marine reserve, or at other areas where marine life and in-water humans are most vulnerable”? says Manta Trust Founder and CEO, Dr. Guy Stevens.
ARTICLE/BABA ANOUSH RETURNS
© www.mantatrust.org
Babaganoush is one of over 5000 reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) identified by the Manta Trust’s Maldivian Manta Ray Project, and he has been sighted over 200 times since 2005 (each manta ray is uniquely identifiable by the spot patterns on its belly). Reef manta rays are intelligent, gentle giants, growing up to four metres in width they feed on tiny zooplanktonic prey by filtering it from the water using specially modified gills. Sadly, throughout their range, manta rays have been heavily fished over the last few decades. Targeted for their gill plates, which are used in Traditional Asian Medicines, and caught incidentally by fisheries targeting other species, these species are now listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. The Manta Trust is working with projects around the world to find solutions to the threats facing these species globally, including the growing impacts of tourism. One vital conservation tool is helping countries to seek economic alternatives to fisheries. Manta tourism provides many countries and governments throughout the range of manta rays with a strong economic incentive to protect these species and their habitats. However, this tourism also needs to be managed if it is to be sustainable. The Maldives, which is home to the world’s largest population of reef manta rays, where these species are protected nationally, has been taking some positive steps to conserve its native marine life and encourage responsible tourism. However, the pressures on the Maldives’ coral reefs and their inhabitants are rapidly increasing, and much greater efforts are required if this ecosystem is to not to become ‘loved to death’. Hanifaru Bay, a location known to seasonally attract huge
aggregations of manta rays, and which was recently featured on the BBC’s Blue Planet II series, was declared a marine protected area (MPA) in 2009. In 2010, regulations at this site were put in place to minimise the impacts of tourism on the aggregating manta rays. These measures include restrictions on visitor numbers, a ban on SCUBA diving and fishing, with strict enforcement by on-site rangers. As a result, this site has become a model example of how well-managed tourism can, and should, benefit both marine life and the local economy. However, outside of this small MPA, the rapidly growing pressures of development and climate breakdown upon the natural resources and the biodiversity of the Maldives should be a serious concern for a nation that’s economy is so heavily reliant on the health of its marine environment. The Manta Trust continues to work with local communities, tourism operators, and the Maldives government to find tangible solutions to the issue of tourism development, but this work is not easy, and we have very limited resources. If you care about Babaganoush, the rest of the Maldives manta rays, and more broadly our Oceans, you can help to support our work by adopting Babaganoush today. The Manta Trust’s How to Swim with Manta Rays website also gives clear guidelines on how divers and snorkelers should behave in the water to ensure their presence minimises disturbance to any encountered manta rays. Tourism operators can download free resources to help run responsible manta trips and can register to be listed as a responsible operator.

HMS Hermes The world’s first purpose-designed aircraft-carrier In the early hours of April 9, 1942, during World War II, the commander of the first Japanese air strike force, Vice-Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, made a momentous decision that would affect the lives of many, not only then but in centuries beyond.

A few hours later, the Royal Navy’s HMS Hermes, the world’s first purpose-built aircraft carrier, was sinking beneath the waves of the Indian ocean after receiving 40 direct hits from Nagumo’s 70 Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter/ bombers. This event, in which 300 sailors perished, followed Japan’s attack on Ceylon which prompted British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s quote as “The most dangerous moment in world war II”. Today, the Hermes is one of the jewels in the crown of Sri Lankan diving. Undisputedly one of the best dive sites in Sri Lanka, it lies ten kilometres off the idyllic shores of Batticaloa, the eastern-most city that is still recovering from the ravages of the 2004 tsunami. The journey to Batticaloa can be arduous, often requiring a gruelling eight to ten-hour drive through winding roads, thick jungles, fiercely inhospitable and uninhabitable bush country. Yet the trip is almost as exciting as the destination, because brief detours could be made to two

wonders of the ancient world: the magnificent rock fortress of Sigiriya and the fascinating old kingdom of Polonnaruwa. At 53m, beyond recreational dive depth limits, the world of Hermes is surreal and dream-like. In part, this sensation is caused by nitrogen narcosis, a physiological condition that dulls the mind to a state not unlike intoxication; or a consequence of breathing compressed air deeper than 30m. It is also a mysterious shadow world of low light with ominous-looking structures that loom over the seascape. Because of such challenging conditions as the depth, possible strong cold water currents, the impairing narcosis, and long decompression times, it is a dive for the experienced Technical Divers only. A bottom time of about 25 minutes generally mandates an additional 53-minute multi-level decompression sequence, requiring a diver to carry two 12-litre tanks of air and enriched air (EAN) mix for accelerated decompression. This is certainly a dive requiring immaculate planning, proper procedures, and safety equipment. When it sank, the Hermes tipped over and came to rest on its flight deck, partly propped up by the ‘island’ or superstructure. At 183m long, the wreck is huge and requires many dives to thoroughly explore it. The keel of the ship is at a depth of 45m, and like a magical white forest in a mythical land; the entire hull is covered with a beautiful outcrop of large Black Coral. At 53m, most of the upper deck is buried beneath the sand and beyond reach. Yet, to this day you can see the great Bofors guns of the lower deck, anti-aircraft guns, the island superstructure, a huge propeller, and the massive caverns that once led to the lower deck. Also strewn across the wreck are unused anti-aircraft shells. While most of the wreck is largely intact, the bombing damage in some areas is so severe that it is impossible to ascertain which part of the ship you are at. It is the teeming marine life at the Hermes site that sets it apart from many other dives in Sri Lanka. Here, especially during the months of August to October, sea creatures are in great abundance. Large Potato Cods peer curiously through the Black Coral at intruding divers. Massive shoals of Mangrove and Blue Striped Snappers congregate over the keel like large rain clouds. Solitary Great Barracuda, packs of huge Dog Tooth Tuna and Giant Trevally join this melee by hovering around the ship and waiting for an opportune moment to pounce on an unsuspecting victim. The Hermes, it seems, is the theatre for an eternal ballet of life and death between predator and prey. Sometimes, even bigger pelagics such as Sailfish and passing Bryde’s Whales can be seen. May through October are the best months to dive the Hermes; earlier being better for visibility, but the latter period is more suitable for viewing marine life. It is an addictive venture, and many who pledge to dive the Hermes only once, return for more. Perhaps this is not so hard to fathom. After all, the Hermes is a symbol of a unique diving experience that epitomises incredible history, tragedy, rich marine life, exotic adventure, challenge, excitement, and danger. Once savoured it is an experience forever sought-after to a point of obsession. For after diving at the Hermes, you are irrevocably changed for ever

Stand Up For Our Seas Maldives Expedition 2019

Floating Asia 2019
In February 2019, four women completed an unprecedented stand up paddle-boarding (SUP) expedition in Baa Atoll in the Maldives, raising awareness of the need to protect marine life, and the necessary actions to do so. Dr. Claire Petros and Dr. Cal Major, veterinarians from the UK, along with Maldivian Ocean Advocates Saazu Saeed and Dhafy Hassan Ibrahim, paddled a gruelling 100km over 8 days, the likes of which has never been done before in the Maldives. The women paddled in the beating sun, fighting dehydration and exhaustion, through unseasonal headwinds and waves and against strong currents, between 16 islands of the Atoll. The mission of SUFOS was to raise awareness of the threat of plastic pollution and climate change to the The Maldives, while encouraging more people to work for the common cause of protecting marine

life. Ocean Ambassadors is proud to have supported this expedition. The team was also supported by environmentalist Rob Thompson of Odyssey Innovations, award-winning photographer and videographer James Appleton, and Shameel Ibrahim of the Olive Ridley Project as they visited schools, islands and resorts, giving presentations, and running beach and harbour clean ups. A key aim of the trip was to investigate the myriad of solutions to plastic pollution and climate change already in place in the country, with the aim of inspiring further positive change.

CELEBRATING SOLUTIONS AND INSPIRING CHANGE
THE THREAT OF PLASTIC POLLUTION AND CLIMATE CHANGE TO A PRISTINE MARINE ENVIRONMENT The Maldives is renowned for its pristine marine environment and abundance of wildlife, but it is also vulnerable to plastic pollution, coral bleaching and climate change. Thousands of marine creatures every year are entangled in lost or discarded fishing nets. Thousands more ingest plastic fragments, causing starvation and poisoning the food chain.
beaches regularly used by turtles for nesting, and harbors packed with plastic.
As the lowest-lying country in the world, The Maldives is made up of more than 1100 islands surrounded by coral reefs which support the ocean ecosystem. Due to warming seas, these corals are becoming bleached, with progressively less ability to regenerate. The rising sea levels are severely threatening the islands, with estimates projecting that they will be under water in 12 years if current trends continue.
Plastic pollution is a huge issue with recent global media attention. It is a global problem, and experiencing it here, juxtaposed by wildlife, and highlighted the importance of the need to tackle this problem urgently and globally. The oceans are all connected and are vital to support life on Earth, producing over 50% of the oxygen in the atmosphere. Dr. Claire Petros says: “Having treated sea turtles with life threatening entanglements caused by plastic pollution and ghost fishing gear, I have witnessed firsthand just how much suffering and damage each animal affected by this man made problem has to endure.”
The SUFOS team were privileged enough to encounter turtles, dolphins and manta rays during the paddling, bringing home the importance of protecting the oceans around the world. They also encountered uninhabited islands covered in plastic bottles, enormous ghost fishing nets on
““Having treated sea turtles with life threatening entanglements caused by plastic pollution and ghost fishing gear, I have witnessed firsthand just how much suffering and damage each animal affected by this man made problem has to endure.”
An important part of the expedition was to engage schools, and this was particularly important to Dhafy and Saazu, who regularly run events with children to help them understand how amazing our oceans are. The team are deeply passionate about protecting the oceans wildlife, ensuring a healthy planet for the next generation. As Cal Major writes: “Our messages were universal and non-critical. We were not there to shame or guilt anybody, but rather celebrate the solutions in place to inspire further change, and to help people to see the importance of caring for the environment.” ““It’s not about feeling guilty for what we don’t do, but about feeling proud about what we can do” — says Dr. Cal Major The team delivered 3 school talks, and in one school the children gave their own presentation about the work they were doing to manage waste on their island. Each local island they visited was different, with varying levels of commitment to removing single use plastic, however the majority of the children they spoke to were connected to the importance of the ocean, even if just through the importance of fish in their diet. The reception to the SUFOS team was phenomenal, with local islands and resorts alike excited to share the positive changes they already had in place, proud to protect the local marine life, and eager to learn more. Many schools were working towards becoming plastic free, and as well as receiving the team’s presentations, were encouraged to give their own accounts of the waste management practices being initiated on their home islands.

A GLOBAL CALL TO ACTION
The team met with Dr. Hussain Rasheed, the Minister of Environment, before setting out on their voyage, and his message was a clear global call to action: The Maldives is taking responsibility for its own carbon emissions, aiming to become the first carbon-neutral country. They are supporting plastic free schools programmes, and helping islands to become plastic free. Resorts are answering consumer demands to use less plastic, and most have desalination plants to make drinking water, removing the need for plastic water bottles. Fishing with nets is not permitted in the Maldives; pole and line methods are widely used instead: The nets arriving in ocean currents into the Maldivian waters, entangling the megafauna here, are usually from further afield. Even with the Maldives making all the changes within their power, it is up to the global community to take action to prevent carbon emissions and climate change from irreparably destroying this country. The expedition received copious in-country media attention and support, and was used as a vehicle to encourage continued positive change, and to inspire global action. “I believe in positive, collaborative change. The momentum in the movement tackling single use plastic is proof of this - individual voices coming together to demand change from the government, companies and businesses, and change is happening!— says Dr. Cal Major 46
