Dive and snorkel the atolls Soneva in Aqua’s customisable charters range from one to seven-night itineraries, winding their way through the Baa, Raa, Noonu, and Lhaviyani Atolls, with longer itineraries available on request. These areas have countless diving and snorkelling sites for divers of all skill levels. Divers can explore wrecks, caves, swim-throughs, overhangs, drop offs, and dives with currents ideal for drifting. Manta rays, eagle rays, batfish, Napoleon wrasse, turtles and sharks can be spotted at various tilas (tila means ‘shallow reef’ in Dhivehi).

Soneva Fushi’s Soleni Dive Centre, run by Thomas Waelchli and Elisabetta Benini, has multi-lingual PADI instructors and small group sizes to ensure worldclass diving experiences. A number of diving courses are available to choose from, including Discover Scuba, Resort Course, PADI Scuba Diver, PADI Open Water. Thomas was one of the first foreign divers to visit the Maldives over 25 years ago, and as such, has a wealth of knowledge about the area. All dives from Soneva in Aqua are run by the Soleni Dive Centre at an additional cost. The Maldives is well-known for its larger pelagic species, with Hanifaru Bay in the Baa Atoll being one of the best places in the world to see manta rays from May until November. What makes this destination truly stand out is the sheer number of mantas that congregate there. In most locations you’ll only see a dozen mantas at any given time, in Hanifaru Bay they flock in the hundreds to feed on zooplankton, making this destination incredibly unusual. The Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere’s guidelines do not permit diving in the bay, but you can snorkel to your heart’s content. You might also spot hawksbill turtles and the elusive whale shark during your trips.

Catch turquoise waves When one thinks of the Maldives, you usually conjure scenes of smooth ocean vistas, with not a wave in sight. But the Maldives does in fact have a surf season, and it runs from mid-February to November. All of the surf equipment at Soneva, sourced from numerous brands, are made from recycled waste, and the resorts provide full usage of their surfboards, sunscreen, and rash guards. All items (except for the surfboards) are also available for retail. This initiative hopes to encourage guests to leave their equipment at home, making for lighter packing and to raise awareness of eco-friendly brands. The Baa and Noonu Atolls have several local spots in addition to Goidhoo, which is one of the most well-known areas in the Maldives for surfing. The left and right breaks wrap around the stunning reef entrance to the massive lagoon and can last as long as 70 metres with the right swell direction. The protected lagoon on the reef’s interior provides excellent shelter for overnight visits and endless snorkelling, stand-up paddle boarding and various other water sports. Coming from humble beginnings, Gulf Craft was formed with a vision of producing these distinctive vessels, inspired by the skills of the region’s forefathers. Growth and higher demand

have enabled Gulf Craft to produce larger vessels for a wider market and increase annual production capacity. Gulf Craft has grown into an international manufacturer of top-quality yachts for a global clientele, winning customers in the American, Asian as well as European markets. Today, Gulf Craft is one of the top ten superyacht builders in the world and markets its yachts and boats to 50 countries worldwide, through its dealer network. According to the company, their state-ofthe-art manufacturing facilities, spread well over 1,000,000 square feet, enabling them to carry out major production processes inhouse, ensuring tighter quality control, cost efficiency and the ability to be flexible with client requirements. Gulf Craft produces products to strict international maritime and industrial standards, such as ABS, RINA, MCA, Lloyd’S Register and others. Gulf Craft has also been CE and BVQA certified. All vessels are produced using some of the latest machinery such as the CNC and the CAD and CAM systems operated by specialized personnel and final touches done by skilled workforce from all around the world, Gulf Craft manufactures its yachts and boats to meet international standards and specifications.

The UAE-based company also has a manufacturing unit and marine service centre in the Maldives of 100,000 squarefeet, which was the very first investment from the Middle East of its kind in the Asian marine industry. The facility which was launched in the year 2000 produces top quality yachts, pleasure boats, and rapid transport vessels. A work ethos of innovation with passion has been influential in making Gulf Craft as one of the top seven shipyards in the world, backed by a strong global network spanning Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. Gulf Craft envisages success not as the reward for its innovation, but as a motivation to set out on a path of difference, with dedication and commitment, while creating ocean-going masterpieces that truly belong to the waters of the world.

Gulf Craft’s manufacturing capabilities stretch from the vertical integration, meaning almost every yacht and boat is done in-house. Semi-customization is another asset at Gulf Craft because we believe a yacht is a personal investment that the customer appreciates. Therefore, the engineering of each yacht has to be re-structured and re-calculated with every new build. The company’s ultra-modern 462,000 square foot facility in Umm Al Quwain dedicated to the production of super yachts, is one of only a handful of manufacturers capable of producing vessels of 100 feet and over.

ARTICLE/DHIRAAGU FLEET MANAGER

Dhiraagu - the leading digital service provider in the Maldives has launched a digitized Fleet Management solution at the Maldives Marine Expo 2019 ‘Dhiraagu Fleet Manager’ will have the potential to reshape how businesses and individual owners manage their fleet on a daily basis. Through a user-friendly web and mobile based application, Dhiraagu has enabled a cost-effective solution that will allow boat owners and fleet managers to be securely connected to their most valuable assets by granting access to real time analytics of the crew and vessels. With the growing need for fleet safety in the Maldives, the application allows fleet managers to easily view, manage and mitigate unforeseen circumstances.

Other features include, remote transmission of engine data such as RPM, speed and fuel consumption. This offers an efficient solution to measure vehicles health and route history to reduce downtime whilst complying with its best practices. All data will be retrieved via a cellular network and can be viewed through personal devices. Dhiraagu has always been consistent in bringing innovative solutions to its customers. The expansion of a comprehensive product portfolio is a true testament of Dhiraagu’s persistent quest for enriching lives through digital services.

“The introduction of this platform is part of the digitization efforts we have taken under our ‘Digital Raajje’ programme, where we look into various industries on how we can bring about digitized solutions to enrich the lives and make it more convenient for everyone. Dhiraagu Fleet Manager is a unified solution providing fleet management and vessel tracking at your fingertips”– stated Senior Manager, Brand & Marketing Communications, Mr. Mohamed Mirshan Hassan. Safety, efficiency and value are the three core ideologies that are the driving force of the solution. It is often a hassle to manage and keep track of all the critical information such as insurance, registration or driver profiles all in one place. Dhiraagu Fleet Manager enables to compile the data together into one dashboard for instant review and facilitate information that allows prompt decision making. There are also mechanisms put in place to send an alert before the license expires, giving ample time for necessary renewals. This is just the initial phase and Dhiraagu is working to further expand the application to include more features.” Product Development & Innovation Manager, Mr. Muaz Mohamed Badeeu gave us an insight into what’s to come for the future of this platform, “The application will include the details of the crew and the passengers. This is to say that if there were to be any issue on the boat, the fleet managers will know exactly who the passengers and the crew are, when the journey started, the route that was taken and the current location of the vessel. You will be able to retrieve the complete history of the vessel for easy tracking The tracking device is a combination of sophisticated GPS tracking technology with an advanced mapping and reporting software managed by a single dashboard. It is a lightweight and waterresistant device that will send an SMS command to a preferred emergency contact via an inbuilt panic button for effective emergency rescue and action. In order to optimize performance and prevent accidents, the app will store driver profiles and hours of service in the document wallet to analyze productivity and behavior of the driver.

recreational divers, dive masters and dive instructors who would like to join the activity as professionals. Prahlad Kakar is an Indian diver, Film maker and Advertising business owner and resident of Mumbai. He has an intense passion for diving, ocean conservation and is a family man. He has over 30 years of recreational diving experience, with Dive centers based in Lakshwadeep and Andamans and has dived extensively all over the world.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW/PRAHLAD KAKAR

How did Lacadives begin? Lacadives, like diving in India was a happy coincidence. Though the beginning of Lacadives was very deliberate once we learnt to dive.. Us learning how to dive was purely accidental because we went to Mauritius on some business and some friends of ours were going diving and they just took me along and since I was sitting on the boat and they had disappeared and I was seasick green , as a dog . The boy on the boat advised me to jump into the water and told me I would feel better. Initially hesitant, I jumped into the water with a mask for the first time in my life and it opened up an entire new world. I could suddenly see everything, I could see the divers and the marine life, everything. As we were leaving the following day, I somehow managed to convince the diving instructor who was very sceptical about us and about Indian in the first place because he had never met any Indians who dived! He initially said no as we were flying the day after and we needed a 24 hour gap, I persisted and told him to give us a short dive just to see what it feels like to have a tank. Finally he agreed to take us on a dive at 6.30 am the next day . Excited we reached on time, kitted up and set off in the dive boat. I panicked because I was really scared. I thought I was going to die as we descended into the blue water. I used up all my air in fifteen minutes! A potential one hour long tank in fifteen minutes flat. I recall somewhere in the middle of the dive, seeing something fluttering on the reef and I pointed out to Hugues, my bald French instructor, and asked him what is it and he left my hand and said “go get it”. I sort of struggled through it and finally got to it .. It was a book and I put it inside my jacket pocket. When we came up and looked, it turned out to be a Quran! What are the chances…I washed it with fresh water and gave it to the Dive team.. 5 years later we opened the first Indian dive school in 1993 in a 100% Muslim island in India, off the western coast of India in Lakshadweep. It is so ironic that those two incidents are so linked together, on my first dive I find a Quran and I start the first diving school, Lacadives, in a Muslim island. How many years have you been diving? What is your dive count? I stopped counting my dives long time ago but I have been diving since 1989 so I must have done at least 3000 dives. After 2000 I have not counted.

the wall and my kids stopped counting after 80 and they were all big huge green sea turtles, at least 150 to 200 of them.

What first inspired you to start scuba diving? Nothing inspired me I was really scared on my first dive, but when I went down it just changed my whole attitude towards the Ocean because the ocean is scary for people who are land based like me and generally in India most people fear the sea.. We look at the ocean as something that is an unknown factor, it’s bottomless and dangerous.. Most people don’t swim out beyond the waves in Goa, there are very few Indians who actually enjoy swimming in the sea. When I started diving it just opened up an entire new world for me and because we knew so little about it, it was a huge learning experience. It was like being born again. Any interesting stories for us from the past? Unforgettable sea life encounters or old times diving when you have had something you cannot forget? Once when we were all diving in Kadmat we started seeing these roosting turtles in

I also remember our instructor, when we used to go back for our dive master course to Mauritius and we were doing our advanced course, he decided to give us a treat and he took us on his boat far away to a little bird island in the middle of the Ocean. When we reached he briefed us about the Shark Pit cave dive we were about to do! He told the rest of us to go through this whirlpool of a channel, to be careful as there was a current and go on top of the pit. It was like a cave, but an open cave gouged out by the wave action, it was like a pit actually. He took Mitali (my lucky wife) inside the pit where unbeknowest to her, she would be surrounded by grey reef sharks... We were on the rim of the pit and just 3-4 metres below the surface where the waves break, so it’s difficult to hang on. From up there we could see him descend with Mitali 16 metres inside the winding channel into the pit which was full of sharks. Hence appropriately called

the Shark Pit! I counted around 29 sharks and they were circling around them in the pit. They were looking at these two sitting inside and looking at us over the rim of the pit with our big googly eyes and they would come right up to us and go back. We were there for half an hour watching these sharks until one by one they kept jumping out of the pit and heading out to the open ocean. It was the most mesmerising , memorable dive I can remember. I never imagined so many sharks in one place. What lead you to Lakshadweep? Curiosity! We looked at a marine chart and they have very detailed depth drawings, which indicate if there is sand or coral and the depth and length of the reef. We found the coral islands of Lakshadweep perfect because the lagoons were huge, the sand banks and coral lagoons and the depth outside the wall were infinite and varied. There were shallow sites and walls that fell away to 400 metres, there were ledges which were around 20 metres and the sand dunes on the east side were all at 15-20 metres, so it was perfect and we decided this is the place we want to go to. When are your busiest months? Due to the monsoon in India, after May it’s

not possible to dive there. The monsoon lasts from May till October, so we really start diving from November to April and beginning of May. On a scale of 1-10 how much do you enjoy your diving work? Diving is my passion there is no scale, it is way off the scale. If you ask me what would I like to do all my life, that’s what I’d like to do I mean I love making films, I love cooking, I love running a restaurant, all those are also part of my passion because I have never worked a single day in my life, I have only followed my passion. What has been the most rewarding moment? When my youngest son from age 3 years used to stand on the jetty and wave , a lone figure watching everybody going off for the dive. (My older 2 boys were already diving and he was the only one left out ). He used to wait for us to return and ask us all the time ‘when can I dive?’ We told him he couldn’t dive until he was 11. He was really into it and when he was 10, I remember one day Mitali (my wife and a senior instructor) decided to finally let him learn to dive and she told the instructor in Kadmat, Seemant, to take him up to 5 metres. I remember there was a conversation between this little figure and this tall figure standing on the edge of the jetty. Seemant tells him, “Anhjin get up, your time has come” and he looks at him with great gravitas and says “Do you know I have waited for this moment all my life”. That was such a special moment. How many divers do you have in your team? Do you all teach all levels? Almost all the people who are diving in India today, practically 70% of them are ex-Lacadives. They have all become instructors, started their own schools, Orca Dive Club, is run by Anees, he was one of my original instructors in Lakshadweep. Seemant who started his own company and a lot others who do out bound dive travel. Out of the 15 to 20 dive schools that are there I think 10 of them are ex-Lacadives. So we have actually groomed a whole lot of instructors to spread this sport. From one single dive school in Lakshadweep, there are centers in Andamans. The Lakshadweep Sports Dept is now running their own diving with the people who we trained in Lacadives in the 90’s.

As an inexperienced diver, how long would it take me to become a confident to diver? Do you find that some people struggle more than others to get the courage to do it?

coast is Lakshadweep and east coast is Andaman. These are unique spots because they have not been explored and there are still sites which have not been dived in or named.

We run the PADI course which is 2 days of confined water diving in a pool, 2 days of open water diving and you are certified. It is actually a 4 or 5 day course, but in Kadmat, when we first started, especially for our Indian clients, we gave them 2 extra days of training. Initially, we ran CMAS courses which are 7 days of training in total.. Since most of our guests never had the privilege of owning fins and masks (as they were all imported especially) we had to spend a day getting them used to the equipment and did our training in the lagoon which was 2.5 metres deep so that if they were uncomfortable or panicked they could just stand up. Lakshadweep had the advantage of shallow sandy lagoons ideal for training.

For people across the world diving in India is so special because they will not be diving with hundreds of divers, they will be diving with maximum of 12 people and you have the entire dive site to yourselves across the 37 islands. Where else would you have such unique isolation. Today all the popular dive destinations like Maldives, the Red sea, Galapagos have so many dive boats and divers. Here unless you are on a LiveAboard, you will never get showbiz 7-star diving like in Lakshadweep and the Andaman.

Where is the best diving around India? How long does one session of diving last? The best diving in India is off the coast where the coral reefs are . On the West

Is there any specific times of the day or night that you prefer to go diving? Preferably during the day with great visibility. When we are training divers we teach all courses during the day., However we do take people who are already qualified on night dives, which is a completely different experience.

Does Lacadives do anything for ocean conservation? From the inception of Lacadives, we realized that we needed to protect the ocean so we started an NGO doing marine conservation work almost parallel. All our divers and team in Lacadives were involved in the NGO. The NGO, ReefWatch Marine Conservation, is a non-profit organization. It was set up to educate children about the ocean and how we cannot treat the Oceans like a dumping ground. The plastic problem at that time was not so bad. Now it is horrible so it is become even more necessary to educate people. We found over a period of time that educating adults was actually a thankless job because they would forget very easily and get back to their normal habits but if you work with children it would impact them massively, and so today ReefWatch not only does research on coral reefs and the possibility of restoring reefs and creating artificial reefs but most importantly it continues its education programs emphasizing the importance of our marine eco systems. We take them snorkelling and show them the forests of the oceans, the diverse coral

reefs, we introduce them to what they are protecting because when you are on land you can’t see them so you don’t know what you are protecting. I would like more NGOs and individuals to be involved in this initiative so that we get more children engaged in the environment programs, so that we have a very strong protection lobby for the oceans, especially certain globally threatened species like the whales and sharks. When is the best time of year to go diving in Lakshadweep and Andaman and why? The best time is November to May. The best month is actually January and February because the visibility is unbelievable, waters are flat calm and the weather is beautiful.

You also made a difference by encouraging your wife Mitali Kakar to become the first Female Dive Instructor in India, what made you do that? I did not encourage her, as a matter of fact nobody can encourage her. If she doesn’t want to do something she won’t do it, so she became a diver because she wanted to. Our instructor saw her potential as the best diving instructor among the entire group 30

Floating Asia 2019

and so he specially trained her and he was very hard on her. He failed her once and she had to go all the way back and re-do her exam and today she is the senior most female CMAS diving instructor and Course Director in this country. You both run the businesses as a couple? How does it work? Well she pulls rank on me underwater, but we don’t run both the businesses together. She runs the NGO and I’m a Co Founderof the NGO and I run the diving with Sumer Verma now and she is a part of that as well. We have very distinct responsibilities. Prahlad is also known as the Ad Guru of India being the pioneer in making Television Commercials and connected well with Bollywood and superstars, while your service is used by some of Major World Class Brands? So how did these too industries connect? You know in advertising we have always been disruptive because we were like cowboys who never followed any rules and it gave us both a great name and a bad name. it gave us tremendous opportunities to explore the possibilities of what you can do without necessarily following somebody else’s script. Diving is also very similar in

Winter Edition

nature because you are exploring a medium which nobody has ever explored. We know space better than we know the Oceans so this is the unknown. There are very specific rules that the ocean has ‘don’t mess with me’ is just one of them. Our instructor Hugues Vitry summed it up very easily he said,”You have to respect the Ocean , become one with it, give up your own ego, only then can you becomes as powerful as the Ocean itself”. As a couple, do you and Mitali encourage other couples to go diving and be divers? We are a diving family, we taught all our 3 boys, so that we can all dive together. We encourage families to dive together because it is a hugely bonding sport. We encourage colleagues in offices to dive together because of the respect and bonding it inspires. It is a tremendous team building activity. When the senior management of an office come to the islands we take them all diving together.. Even if they are scared in the beginning and are bonded by that fear, through the course the thrill and exhilaration of having done it together is such a great sense of achievement that they are generally bonded for life.

You have been the Adex India - Mumbai Dive Show Ambassador at the first International Dive Expo held in India, what’s your vision and opinion for International Diving Events in India? Even today diving is such a new and growing sport and even the government has suddenly realized that if they want to preserve the fragile ecosystems of islands like the Lakshadweep and the Andaman, we cannot have mass tourism trampling all over the place and that if the islanders themselves are going to benefit from that tourism, it has to be high value low volume, and diving is the only activity that does that. They have understood that but still have not come to grips with the idea of how much freedom to give the diving operators, where and how to go and which boats to use, etc. But all this regulation will come into place, they should follow international norms and learn from that. We are happy to consult with and advise government bodies on establishing norms and regulations.. We have a lot of workshops together and there is a lot of lobbying going around to establish diving as a definite recreational tourism sport in areas that are very bio diverse but also very fragile. Diving in the islands is very desirable because all the divers are first taught how to love and

protect their environment. All dive operators understand that a healthy reef is their cash counter! If you destroy the environment, you will lose your business because nobody will come and visit a destroyed reef. The dive operators feel hugely responsible and are trained to protect the marine environment as part of any course today. They all become natural conservationist and lobbyists for the ocean and its protection. The government then has an easy time because they don’t have to educate anybody because we are educating the children in schools with the NGOs, we are educating the divers in the water and we act as the keepers of the reefs, literally ! Dive schools can become the eyes and ears to help the governments set up safe dive havens for the years to come..

families during the diving season. If you want to settle down and raise a family, then it can become a challenge because you are sitting in some remote place and you can’t bring your family there, especially if you have to send your children to school. Finding a balance that works for you is important.. If starting your own dive centre or tourism resort which is specific to diving and water sports is an option, then the sky is the limit with this fast growing sport.

What’s your message for youngsters on Diving and Scuba Diving as a Career? Well it is a limited career unless you are an entrepreneur and instructor and not just a diver. As a diving instructor you can have a great life travelling, training , teaching . Today there are lots of related careers like Vlogging and Blogging, being a travel writer, consulting with resorts to set up dive centers. However, some of the challenges could be that one may be posted in a remote area, isolated from their friends and Winter Edition

What kind of boat-building do you do at Al Shaali Marine Maldives? We build a massive variety of fiberglass boats. And what are the types or models? We manufacture many different models. This includes boats for diving recreation, excursions, water sports, big game fishing. We produce a wide variety of dhonis and speedboats. Al Shaali Marine is always introducing new products to the Maldives boat market. Our dream is to ensure a variety of boats for customers in the Maldives under one roof. Tell us your story – where and how did you join the boating industry? When I first dived into the workforce which was right after I finished school, I joined MWSC. I then got the chance to work in MIFCO. Some time afterwards, I joined Universal Enterprises, where I worked on the Island Explorer – the biggest cruise liner operated in the Maldives at that time. I worked on the ship for more than two and a half years from 1998 to 2000. Sadly in 2000, the Island Explorer had to be shut down due to some operational issues.

ISMAIL SHAREEF OPERATIONS MANAGER, AL SHAALI MARINE MALDIVES

Next up, I transferred to Laguna Beach Resort, now called Velassaru, as the Launch Section Manager of Marine Operations. This was the starting point of my life in Operations. As the Launch Section Manager, my responsibility was to manage operations and maintenance of the speedboats. In 2002, I got an offer from Meeru Island Resort & Spa, where I worked as Transport Manager from 2002 to 2008. During my time there, I completed my Marine Engineering course under the FET program. Just before I became a part of Al Shaali, I worked at Sultans of the Sea as Operations Manager. It was while I was there that I got offered to join Al Shaali, a joint venture between Al Shaali Dubai and Coastline Investments, in 2011. Since the Island Explorer, I had always been involved in the world of boats – but never in the manufacturing industry. I was interested to see where it would lead. Now, I’m the Operations Manager for Al Shaali Marine Maldives, and what a journey it has been.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW/ISMAIL SHAREEF

Looking back, are you happy with your decision to join and be a part of Al Shaali Marine? Yes, of course. It has been a very unique and interesting experience in my life. The knowledge and experiences I have gained during my time here are invaluable. What is your role as Operations Manager? I manage and oversee everything. I’m involved in strategic planning, directing, and coordinating the manufacturing of our vessels in compliance with our company goals and objectives. Since you joined the company in 2011, what progress have you seen in Al Shaali Marine Maldives in terms of the number of boats or the types of boats that are built? When I first joined, Al Shaali Marine Maldives used to mainly provide services to Universal Group Resorts. The company would only build a few new boats a year – though we always provided maintenance and repair to many of their boats. We weren’t too famous at the time and we didn’t advertise much. In 2014, I took over the Operations of the company and started advertising, product marketing, yard development, staff training, and operational strategic plans. From 2015, every year we release one or two brand new models into the market. In 2015, we released a Watersports Launch. In 2016, it was a twelve-passenger speedboat and a 36-feet Fishing Launch. In 2017, it was a 21-feet Water Sports Launch. In 2018, we released a 47-feet passenger-transfer and two different types of Game Fishing Launches. In 2019, a parasailing boat and “Coast Craft 38 Plus” thirty-four-passenger speedboat as well as a 24-footer fishing & recreation concept. Do your boating industry experiences and relationships help and influence your sales? Experience and good networking will always have a positive influence on a company. In my experience we have to try to be as innovative as possible in this industry – within the limits of what is required by the Maldivian market. At Al

Shaali Marine, we always do our research on what the market requirements and new design trends are before designing, manufacturing and launching a new boat. How do you position Al Shaali Marine in the Maldives as a boat building company? Al Shaali Marine Maldives is currently the biggest boat manufacturing company in the country. With Al Shaali, customers are presented with the greatest number of models and choices under one roof – it is the only place in the country where you can get the most variety of boats from one place. On top of that, we have a very successful boatyard with substantial space. Another factor that has helped us to achieve and remain in the position we are in today is the copious amount of support we have received from other various sectors and companies in the industry. It is very important to be trustworthy as a business. How many awards has Al Shaali Marine Maldives received since you took the role of Operations Manager? I’m happy to say that we have achieved a number of awards; At the 2019 Marine Expo, we won Best Innovative Product. This is the first time that a Maldivian product was presented with this award. We were awarded Boating Award 2018 for Best Production Fiberglass for our Coast Craft 37 (27ft – 40ft). We also received Best Dockyard / Slipway of the Year 2017 and 2018. We got Innovator of the Year 2017 at the GOLD 100 Gala. This is quite the prestigious award given to a select group of companies excelling in their client relations as well as innovativeness. We received GOLD 100 Gala awards in the years 2016, 2017 and 2018. We also received the Maldives Boating Award in the years 2016 and 2017 Best Production Fiberglass for the Island Hopper 50 (15m – 40m), Maldives Boating Award 2017 for Best Production Fiberglass for Coast Craft 37 (05m – 24m) as well as Best Boat Designing of the Year 2017

How many boats have you sold from 2017 to 2019?

What is your biggest challenge in operations?

Well, on average in a year, we complete more than three hundred jobs. This includes production, repair and maintenance.

We face many challenges in operations, but we always try to overcome them. In order to help ease the challenges we face, it requires a lot of assistance from regulatory bodies. This will help to further build this industry in all aspects.

What do you think about the changing trends in the boating industry? Trends will always keep changing. These days, there are many luxury cruises and super-yachts being manufactured and also coming into the country, but we try to stick to what our Maldivian market requires. We build boats that suit the waters of Maldives. We must always understand and study the market that we are catering to – then build it. However, if any of our clients would prefer to order larger luxury yachts, we will coordinate with Al Shaali Marine Dubai as they build and specialize in super-yachts that can be brought in to the Maldives.

How many new customers have you got in the recent two years, and are you happy with the outcome? We received quite a lot of new customers. And yes, I’m very grateful and happy with the outcome. Do you also serve as an after-sale service center? Yes, at Al Shaali Marine Maldives we have always emphasized on providing the best after-sale service to each and every one of our clients – maintaining and repairing their vessels. Al Shaali Marine Maldives’ clients are in great hands.

How’s the boatyard business? Our boatyards are doing very well. Currently, we have two sites in K. Thilafushi with a total land area of over 100,000 square-feet – an ample amount of space. We always make sure all our equipment are in top condition and we test them regularly. We leave no stone unturned. What are Al Shaali’s plans to continue to grow the business in the Maldives? We have many plans in place for the future. Not just in terms of production and aftercare services, but also in building people. We always work as a team and we do our best to develop the industry.

Each model features spacious lounge seating, inviting guests to relax the moment they step on-board, while they may enjoy a freshly brewed espresso from the on-board kitchenette, or browse through the latest Jumeirah magazine and familiarize themselves with the plethora of activities on offer at Jumeirah Vittaveli. “I am delighted to be able to surprise our guests for the festive season, as we have many families and couples returning to their favourite holiday destination. It is a delight to know that we were able to introduce yet another service that will enhance our guests’ experience while still keeping true to the elements that have become so dear to our guests – the genuine warmth and dedication that welcomes you the moment you meet our team at the airport and that will continue throughout your stay” comments Jumeirah Vittaveli’s General Manager Abhijit Ghosh. With a traditional Maldivian welcome and more activities to fill your days with than you can dream of, Jumeirah Vittaveli is the perfect place for all the family to speed things up or slow things down. Land and water-based activities include the destination’s first ice rink, a PADI Dive base, water sports centre, Talise Spa, six restaurants and bars, a wine library, an overwater lounge, an underground whisky and chocolate salon and a cigar lounge. They have curated a collection of all of the most remarkable experiences the Maldives has to offer in one place. Shape your own unique Maldives experience and enjoy the beauty of Sun, Sand and Sea.
