Uniquely, Bali’s complex irrigation system has its roots not by order of kings, but its management is very much in the hands of the villagers through village co-operatives, called “Subak”. Since farmers depend on the successful irrigation of the fields, the different Subaks form an inseparable bond that unites into a single system. This unique system has been handed down the generations for over a thousand years, whose results can be admired in the wonderful terraced rice fields of Bali. It is the tangible reflection of the original Balinese ideas and beliefs that are essentially rooted, namely the awareness that human beings need to always maintain harmonious relationship between Man and God, Man and fellow humans, and between Man and Nature in one’s daily life. Such a particular concept is in fact evident in the Balinese creative genius and unique cultural traditions resulting from the long human interaction, especially between the Balinese and the Hindu culture.

Sigiriya was designated as a world heritage site in 1982. Sigiriya is famous for it’s palace ruins on top of a massive 200meter high rock surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs and other structures. The rock itself is a lava plug left over from an ancient long extinct volcano. It is also renowned for its ancient paintings (frescoes), which are similar to those found at Ajanta Caves in India. It is generally agreed, however, that the Sigiriya Frescoes exhibit a uniquely Sri Lankan style. Sigiriya may have been inhabited through prehistoric times. It was used as a rock-shelter mountain monastery from about the 5th century BC, with caves prepared and donated by devotees of the Buddhist Sangha. Sigiriya Museum shows photos of the excavation of Sigiriya, reproductions of the frescoes, examples and translations of some of the graffiti on the Mirror Wall, and artifacts excavated from the site.

Culture Although the Philippines is located in Southeast Asia, its people are commonly deemed to be significantly “less Asian” than those from other Asian countries. This is due to the myriad of inhabitants the country has had throughout the years, including Chinese, Malay, and Islamic peoples to name a few. In a sense, Philippine culture can be said to be a marriage of the East and the West. Spanish influences on Philippine culture are most evident when it comes to religion and religious practices. Warm waters, incredible surf and beautiful scenery combine to create some of the world’s finest surf destinations Asia’s eastern coastlines are on the Pacific Ocean, its southern waves are found in the Indian Ocean, and the little surfed northern coastline is pounded by Arctic Ocean waves. Probably the most popular Asian surfing destination would have to be Indonesia with its quality waves and warm water. Once for the hardcore, places like Bali and Sumatra are now popular and easily accessible, and its once hidden gems are now widely known and visited. Southern Indonesia receives all its swell from the Indian Ocean and some of the best surf comes from the big swells that are generated down in the roaring forties during the Southern Hemisphere winter. The countries on the Indian Ocean are also nice and tropical so bring your board shorts. 33

Asia’s Endangered Species Asia is home to some of the most diverse habitats in the world, both above and below the water, but it is estimated that more than one in three species are endangered... and the figure is rising alarmingly fast. Underwater, a whole range of pressures are putting marine life under immense pressure. Intense population pressure is leading to over-fishing, pollution and the destruction of crucial habitats. As a result, the numbers of almost all fish are declining and many are already endangered. Here you can meet some of these endangered species and hear their story.

Sharks Sharks have inhabited our planet and controlled the food chain for more than 400 million years. Currently, there are 400 species of Sharks in the world. Over half of them are now considered Endangered or Vulnerable. It is estimated that, since 1970, the numbers of some shark species have declined by 95% or more. Some Hammerhead Sharks are thought to have declined by more than 99%. While conservation efforts focused on more ‘cuddly’ creatures, Sharks have slipped through conservation’s net. Unfortunately, millions of them have ended up in fisherman’s nets, supplying the ever-growing demand for Shark Fin Soup in China. Similar to the Napoleon Wrasse, Shark Fin Soup is considered a delicacy in China and the growing wealth of the country means that more and more people can now afford it. Once the Shark’s fins are removed, they are simply tossed back into the ocean to die. Sharks suffer from an unfortunate, hugely undeserved reputation. Only now, when they are well on their way to being wiped out, we are beginning to appreciate their importance to the entire marine food chain and ourselves. The decline in numbers is so alarming that, unless very urgent action is taken, 400 million years of evolution may be destroyed in the blink of an eye.
Whales Whales have been in our oceans for 50 million years. They have common ancestry with the Hippopotamus and are closely related to Dolphins. There are two types of Whales - Baleen Whales, which filter feed plankton and smaller Toothed Whales, which have teeth to feed on squid and fish. In total, there are around 40 species of Whale many of which pass through the tropics on their epic migrations. 11 are currently listed as endangered. Many are vulnerable as they are yet to recover from commercial whaling, which drove many species near to extinction. Commercial Whaling was banned in the middle of the last century, but Whales are still struggling. Modern threats to their survival include: capture in Drift Nets - officially banned in 1992 but still used in certain places; Pollution - by way of garbage in the ocean which Whales may consume and damaging chemical pollution from human activities that enter the Whale’s system and affect their health; and increased boat traffic, which Japan still catches and kills many Whales annually in the name of ‘scientific research’.
52
Dolphins Closely related to Whales, the Dolphin group also includes Porpoises and the misleadingly named Killer Whale and Pilot Whale. They are highly intelligent and very social animals. Of all the Dolphin family, it is River Dolphins that are most under threat. River Dolphins are less well known and much rarer than their marine counterparts. Globally, there are 7 species, 3 of which are found in Asia: The Irrawaddy Dolphin, The Finless Porpoise and the Yangtze River Dolphin, or Baiji. The Irrawaddy Dolphin is unique as it can be found in both fresh and salt water. Tiny fresh water populations exist in 4 rivers in Asia, plus in a lake in Thailand. They are listed as Critically Endangered. The plight of the Baiji is even more perilous. Only found in the Yangtze River in China, no more than one hundred are thought to remain and they are already on the verge of extinction. Finless Porpoises are the only fresh water Porpoise. They can be found near coastal waters around the region and in the Yangtze in China. They are classified as Endangered, with less than 1500 alive today. The main threats are through fishing, which accidentally catch and kill the Dolphins and Habitat Degradation such as pollution.
53
Dugongs Dugongs are closely related to Manatees and are distant relatives of Elephants. They are gentle herbivores, feeding solely on seagrasses. They have a complex social structure and are very caring parents, weaning their young for two entire years and sometimes cradling them, just like a human parent would. Despite this gentle, caring nature, they are hunted by people for their meat, oil, skin, bones & teeth. They have even been hunted for their tears, which were thought to have medicinal properties. They can be found in certain areas across the Asia Pacific, close to shore and fields of seagrass. The largest populations are in Western Australia & Papua New Guinea, with smaller populations in Thailand, Malaysia & the Philippines. Additional threats come from boat traffic, as they need to surface to breath every six minutes, pollution and habitat loss. As female Dugongs only give birth to a handful of young in their lives, they are a species that struggles to rebound from any loss of population. They are considered Vulnerable to Extinction throughout the region.
Turtles
Turtles have survived on this planet since the days of the Dinosaurs, 100 million years ago. There are seven species of marine turtle in the world. One is found only in the Gulf of Mexico. All of the other six species can be found in the Asia-Pacific region. Once plentiful, five of these species are now listed as endangered, with the Hawksbill & Leatherback Turtles listed as Critically Endangered. The sixth species, the Flatback Turtle, cannot be listed because we do not know enough about it. While female turtles lay hundreds of eggs, even under natural conditions only a handful ever survive and they take decades to reach sexual maturity and reproduce. Now, many other threats continue to reduce their numbers alarmingly. The main threats to marine turtles are: demand for their meat and beautiful shells, which continues despite laws to protect them; reduction of their habitats, especially the beaches they need to lay their eggs; irresponsible fishing practices that accidentally catch turtles - known as ‘by-catch’; increasing boat traffic and pollution, such as plastic bags that they mistake for food and chemical pollution that affects their health.
54
Napoleon Wrasse Napoleon Wrasse are also known as Humphead Wrasse and Maori Wrasse, depending on where you are in the world. They are one of the largest fish found on coral reefs, reaching up to 2 metres in length. Adults are particularly distinctive, not only for their size, but also for their large lips and the bump on their head. Their reproductive behaviour is also curious, with individuals changing from female to male as they grow older - nobody knows why. Sadly, they are highly sought after, both as food and for live fish-food. They are considered a high class, regal delicacy in some areas and, as wealth increases, they are sought by more and more people. They are slow to reproduce, which means populations will struggle to recover. Often, it is the juveniles that are killed, making their future even more bleak. They are often caught by spear-fishing and cyanide fishing. They are now listed as Endangered.
Tuna Tuna would not be the first fish most people would think of when talking about endangered species. In actual fact, Tuna populations are facing collapse. Between 1960 and 2000, the global Tuna Industry doubled in size every 10 years, reaching a peak in 2004. South-east Asia currently supplies half of the world’s Tuna, but demand is far exceeding supply and stocks are declining at an alarming rate. Two of the key Tuna species in danger are Yellowfin & Bigeye Tuna. The demand for Tuna has led to huge amounts of illegal, unreported and unlicensed fishing, on top of licensed fishing levels that are considered unsustainable. This huge amount of fishing is also having a big impact on many other species, both large & small, which are the ‘by-catch’ of the huge tuna fishing industry.
Seahorses
Seahorses are one of the most unique fish in the oceans. Not only is their appearance unique, but so is their behaviour. Unlike other fish, it is the males that give birth to the young, not the females. These shy creatures were once common all around the world, now they are endangered. Before human intervention, they had almost no predators due to their excellent camouflage. Now, 24 million seahorses are taken from the oceans each year in an industry involving 77 different countries, to be used in traditional Chinese medicines, sold as souvenirs or kept as pets. They have also suffered as a result of shrimp trawling, destructive fishing methods and pollution. There are 35 species of seahorse in the world, around 25 of which are found in tropical waters. Many of them are now listed as endangered. 55

Species That Clean
Meet the underwater clean team vital for marine ecosystems
58
Keeping the underwater world clean and healthy is a full-time job for some species. Of course, a balanced ecosystem involves the participation of every life form, but there is also a whole host of creatures that have specific roles – cleaning other animals, filtering the water, and keeping some other species in check. Scientists have revealed the importance of some of these cleaning species – according to a study published in the journal Current Biology, individual rabbit fish, for example, visit cleaners every five minutes in some places! Sadly, these vital underwater inhabitants are often the first to disappear when the environment becomes too polluted. Meet the underwater “clean team”! Some are part-timers, others clean around the clock, and all of them matter. Some of the most dramatic and intimate encounters with marine life occur on visits to established “cleaning stations”. These are places where animals will go to have parasites, dead skin, bacteria and mucus removed by other species. Cleaners help other species avoid getting infections, especially around wounds. Cleaning stations can be low key – little patches of reef inhabited by cleaner shimp and used by fish such as groupers and moray eels, or turtles and reef sharks. Or, they may be dramatic sea mounts inhabited by schools of angelfish and visited by ocean wanderers like mantas and pelagic sharks. In some places animals will aggregate in huge numbers on cleaning stations, and there appears to be some kind of understanding and communication about taking turns, and a hiatus on predator/prey behaviour.
59
Sponges
Distribution: Worldwide Sponges have one of the most vital roles in the reef – they filter huge quantities of water, removing impurities. Some sponges also produce massive amounts of oxygen, around three times what they consume.
Sea Snails Distribution: Worldwide Astrea, turban, and nerite snails are just some of the sea snail species that keep pesky turf algae and cyanobacteria under control, preventing it from overgrowing and smothering corals and other benthic life. Not all sea snails are so benign, however – some snails, like the infamous Drupella, and renowned coral killers
Angelfish Distribution: Warm, tropical waters worldwide, Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean Nearly all species of angelfish will “work” on cleaning stations during their juvenile phase. A few species will even continue to fulfil the role of cleaners into their adult life, such as the clarion angelfish. Some angelfish, in the Caribbean for example, feed on fast-growing sponges, and keep them in check.
60
Parrotfish Distribution: Tropical seas worldwide A “keystone” species, parrotfish play an essential role on the reefs, spending around 90 percent of their day feeding by scraping algae off the reefs. They also expel coral sand, which, in turn, keeps beaches healthy. Unfortunately, in many places, parrotfish have been overfished for food, leading directly to the decline in reef health in these areas.
Cleaner Wrasse Distribution: Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Red Sea One of the most well-known underwater cleaners, cleaner wrasse will “dance” to advertise their “services” at specific stations. These bright little fish remove parasites from the animals that visit them, getting into hard-to-reach places like gills and mouths. There are five species cleaner wrasse in the Labroides genus, but perhaps the most familiar is the blue-streak cleaner wrasse, Labroides dimidiadus.
Sea Cucumbers Distribution: Warm, tropical waters worldwide, Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean Nearly all species of angelfish will “work” on cleaning stations during their juvenile phase. A few species will even continue to fulfil the role of cleaners into their adult life, such as the clarion angelfish. Some angelfish, in the Caribbean for example, feed on fast-growing sponges, and keep them in check.
61
Butterflyfish Distribution: Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, Red Sea There are more than 100 species of butterflyfish. They are all members of the Chaetodontidae family and are also opportunistic cleaners, though again, for most species, the behaviour is more common amongst juveniles. Most adult butterflyfish tend to form monogamous mating pairs.
Albatrosses Distribution: Southern Hemisphere from Antarctica to Australia, South Africa and South America, with four species in the North Pacific from Hawaii to Japan, California and Alaska, and one species between the Galápagos Islands and South America. Anecdotal evidence suggests that there may be a direct relationship between albatross and ocean sunfish (Mola mola), with the fish basking at the surface and the birds descending to clean them of parasites. Other seabirds have also been spotted engaging in similar behaviour, helping remove unwelcome hitchhikers from other marine megafauna, such as cetaceans.
Surgeonfish Distribution: Tropical seas worldwide Surgeonfish species like blue tang and brown surgeonfish are often seen cleaning other fish, and even turtles, removing unwanted algae from their shells.
62
Cleaner Shrimp Distribution: Worldwide, though data from the polar regions is limited. People commonly use the term “cleaner shrimp to refer to crustaceans that are members of three families: Hippolytidae (which includes the Pacific cleaner shrimp, Lysmata amboinensis), Palaemonidae (including the spotted Periclimenes magnificus) and Stenopodidae (which includes the banded coral shrimp, Stenopus hispidus). Cleaner shrimp often live in little crevices in the reef, and some will perform a rocking dance to advertise their services. They are excellent (but not exclusively) marine dentists, trusting and being trusted by predators like moray eels to attend to their teeth.
Neon Gobies Distribution: Western Atlantic, from Florida and Bermuda, the Bahamas, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, coasts of Central America and northern South America Sometimes mistaken for cleaner wrasse by the uninitiated, neon gobies (small gobies in the Elacatinusgenus) pick parasites and dead skin off other fish in much the same way as the little wrasse do. Elacatinus sp. usually form monogamous pairs, and studies have suggested that the females do more cleaning than the males, probably as a result of having greater energy and nutritional needs for reproduction.

he dream of Olympic Surfing started with Duke Kahanamoku, an Olympic Gold Medalist in swimming and native Hawaiian known as the father of modern Surfing. Duke first presented his dream at the 1912 Summer Olympic Games in Stockholm, where he expressed his wish to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to see Surfing included in the Games.
Thomas Bach. Bach brought a fresh vision to the Olympics, realizing the need to add youthful, vibrant sports. The door was opened for 26 sports, which included Surfing and SUP, to apply for inclusion in the Tokyo 2020 Games, an opportunity that was happily welcomed by the ISA.

SENDI
THE PROPONENT FOR CHANGE IN THE MALDIVIAN DIVE INDUSTRY 73
support from Mr. Ali Hussain who printed the photos and made post cards out of it. I got a good income and I began to realise I could make a living out of that,” Sendi reminisced.
Uniquely insightful and brimming with experience of the underwater world of Maldives, a pivotal figure that needs no further introduction in the Maldivian dive community, Hussain Rasheed ‘Sendi’ is unparalleled in his contribution to the growth of Maldivian dive industry. The first ever PADI course director in Maldives, with an astounding 30 years of PADI membership, the prolific diver, entrepreneur and educator shared some of his views and drives that lead him to where he is today. In the early 70’s as a young kid growing up in the capital of Maldives, Male’, his passion for the ocean and everything that lay wherewith started with the trips he made to a nearby uninhabited island in a small boat with his father to take corals to build his house. During those trips, he came across the hippy tourists that visited Maldives in yachts, with their peculiar lifestyle peaking his curiosity and inspiring his love for the sea. He remarked on his humble beginning as a diver in the 80’s using secondhand diving and snorkelling equipment, without a diving certificate. He found that selling underwater pictures could generate a good income. “I started earning an income from taking pictures of sharks sighted near Thilafushi house reef, sometimes 30 to 40 sharks would visit the reef. I got an immense 74
A UNDP diving course that he participated in 86’ would forever cement his relationship with the underwater beauty of Maldives, as he became convinced about the beauty of Maldivian coral reefs and enjoyed the sea as his office. He became a videographer and has achieved a remarkable feat of more than 2000 dives for underwater videography capturing the beauty of marine ecosystems of Maldives. Sendi estimates that not even 3 percent of Maldivians know the real value of this beauty.
“You will not value something you don’t see, you don’t love something you don’t see, you won’t know it’s value until you put on a snorkelling mask,” Even though most Maldivians are aware of the importance of protecting the coral reefs, in Sendi’s view, there is a bigger issue at stake that needs urgent attention and care, in terms of its commercial value as well as its importance to the health of the ecology as a whole - Seagrass. “We still aren’t aware of what seagrass is,” he expressed with concern. Its importance can be analogous to that of a rainforest- just as deforestation leads to depleted levels of oxygen in the atmosphere, removing seagrass - which is the main source of supply of oxygen to the marine environment - leads to a degradation of coral reefs as it’s diet is controlled by seagrass. “Maldives is a nursery ground in the middle of Indian Ocean, every lagoon is unique,” he added.
Life starts in shallow lagoon, the biodiversity of which affects the whole food chain up to the sharks. If we need to protect and conserve our coral reefs, there is a paramount importance that we give the lagoons and seagrass the care it needs. “I will start with the research on conservation of Seagrass / Seaweeds next year... my goal is to study Seagrass / Seaweeds ,” Sendi explained. In retrospect, Sendi recollects the early 80’s as a time when sharks were abundant, with the advent of shark export, shark sighting declined so much that dive centres couldn’t see sharks at all at some point in the late 90’s, with export hitting the peak in years 2000-2010 with 3 tons of shark being exported during these 10 years. But since sharks are protected now, there number has been gradually increasing and according to Sendi, the change is amazing. “Shark story is a success,” he concluded. Sendi has played a pivotal role in changing the landscape of diving for local entrepreneurs. At operational level, a lot of locals progress but Sendi noticed that a majority of these divers fail at managerial level. Frustrated with how local divers were getting treated at dive centres, he took the initiative to start a local dive centre in the early 2000, writing letters to resort owners and eventually he got support from business tycoon Mr. Gasim Ibrahim to start the first local dive centre in a resort in 2004. Villa Diving, where he was a director, have now been renamed to Dive Oceanus. Since then, local dive centres has started to erupt across Maldives and Sendi takes delight in seeing the changes that are coming. He expressed, “I’m happy to see lot of local dive centre owners in the Maldives” Sendi has filled various administrative and academic roles in fostering marine education and marine sciences in Maldives. He helped set up a dive institute at Sun Island Resort which later changed to Faculty of Marine Studies - Villa College. Sendi was acting as a
Dean for the Faculty for two years. He has a keen interest for the education sector regarding marine life, and expressed grave concern for the diminishing demand and importance for marine science in academic curriculum, both in A levels and O levels. “Maldives is the optimal place for everybody who wants to study Marine Sciences,” Sendi said explaining the rich biodiversity of our ocean and the archipelagic nature of our existence. In 2000, Sendi helped to develop the 2003 Dive Regulation in Maldives. He was instrumental in the first ever underwater cabinet meeting that was held in October 2009 to highlight the threat of global warming. He has some advice for advocators raising awareness about the ocean. “You have to take off your sunglasses and put on a mask. Then you become the ambassador, then you start advocating, otherwise you can’t.” He has strong words regarding the responsibility that the whole dive industry must take to foster sustainable growth, remarking that Maldives offers the most quality and safe dives in the world. “Even one fatality will affect the whole industry if it is from negligence,” he said. To improve the quality of service of the dive industry, Sendi expressed the need for connecting researchers, educators, dive centres, equipment manufacturers and many other organisations under one umbrella federation. He humbly expressed that he has not accomplished much, he is just enjoying his love for underwater, his contributions are difficult to enumerate. Recently, Dive Oceanus - Maldives received the South Asia’s Leading Dive Centre award from the South Asian Travel Awards 2017. 75

WRECK DIVING
Wreck diving is a special form of scuba diving, where the diver explores a ‘shipwreck’ sunk in the ocean. A shipwreck usually becomes an artificial reef with a habitat for many types of marine life. It’s also intriguing with some exciting or tragic history, often presenting new skill challenges for diving, and is a microcosm of our maritime heritage. With so much coastline and so many seas, it is no wonder that South Asia has some of the best wreck diving in the world. 79
TOP WRECKS OF ASIA
HMS Hermes, Sri Lanka
Location: East coast, Sri Lanka, Batticaloa
Maldives Victory, Maldives Location: North Male Atoll, SW of Hulhule Reef, Hulhule Airport Island The Maldives Victory Wrecks is 110 meters long and lies at a depth of 35 meters on a sandy bottom. The bow points to the north. Divers should plan at Maldives Victory wreck their dive in accordance with their air supply and the time available, which will allow then to complete the lines attached to the buoy. It is important to remember that the wreck is studded with extremely sharp jagged seashells and urtication hydroids. Moreover, injuries can be caused by sharp, jagged fragments of metal protruding from the wreck. The Maldives Victory Wreck is marked with a buoy surface maker and this is used as the descent and ascent line which is fixed to the mast of the wreck. Once divers reach the mast, they can easily swim from the mast to the bow following the super structure and back to the stern. For safety reason dives in the Maldives Victory wreck is classified as an advanced dive site. The 25metre depth (82 feet) on the deck is no particular problem but great caution, planning and experience are required in order to deal with the currents, which can be quite powerful at times. This cargo ship hit a reef and sank on Friday, 13 February 1981.
80
During the Second World War, the Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier HMS Hermes was sunk off Ceylon’s (Sri Lanka’s) East Coast. It was the world’s first ship to be designed and built as an aircraft carrier. Commissioned in 1924, the Hermes served briefly with the Atlantic Fleet before spending the bulk assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet and the China Station. Many people were rescued by a nearby hospital ship, but 307 lives were lost. The ship lies in 53metres of water in clear warm water on its port side and is intact. The descend seems to be eternal. Ten meters. Twenty meters. In an ocean so ethereally blue, the visibility must be undoubtedly limitless. Yet the fish are in the hiding; for except for countless Yellow Back Fusiliers and Long Fin Banner fish, the ocean feels vast and abandoned. This is unusual; for in other dives we have seen large schools of Great Barracuda, Trevally, Tuna, very large Potato Cods, Panther Torpedo Rays and Sea Snakes very often. But not today. The blazing sunlight streams down the clear blue waters in cascading bars and seems to converge into one single point. Our eyes scan keenly to the depths in anticipation. At first glance, one is forgiven for thinking that this is a large rock. But this is not. This is the H.M.S Hermes. The world’s first purpose built Aircraft Carrier; built by Armstrong Whitworths in January 1918; launched on September 11, 1919; commissioned by the British Royal Navy on 1923 and sunk by the Japanese on April 9th, 1942. At a depth of 42 meters, amidst a gentle current, we let go of the anchor rope and unreel our way 60 years back into history.
The SS Suddhadib (Hardeep), Thailand Location: Koh Chuang, The Samae San Island Chain, Pattaya
USAT Liberty, Indonesia Location: Tulamben, Bali The USAT Liberty is also known as the Liberty Ship Wreck, USAT Liberty Glo, the USS Liberty, Hog Island Hull No. 517, and SS Scooba. It was a United States Army ship and was built in New Jersey in 1918. The ship served during World War I, as well as during peacetime, and later again during World War II. It was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1942 and, as a result, it was beached on the island of Bali. The ship was first stripped by the American military and then later by locals before it just sat on the beach rusting underneath the hot sun that beat down daily. Today, it is one of the most popular wreck dives in Bali after a volcanic eruption in 1963 moved the ship off of the beach into the water. The wreck is found at a maximum depth of 30 meters, or 100 feet. The shallow area of the wreck, though, lies only about 4 meters, or 13 feet deep, making it easy to access even by snorkelers.
The Hardeep ship originally known as the SS Suddhadib was attacked and sunk by British Allied bombers in the latter part of World War II. Originally, it had a long service history before the war as both a passenger and cargo-ship before she was commandeered by the Japanese army to run supplies to Thailand where they were building the railway linking the country to Burma. The shipwreck is located just off Samae san, and is 64-metres long and lies on her starboard side literally only a few hundred metres from Koh Chuang. Hull is largely intact and there is access to the engine room where you can see the huge crankshaft you can also swim though the cargo hold which is known as the Cathedral because of the shafts of light that pour through the vast interior of this area. Time has taken it’s toll on the superstructure and penetration is becoming risky, but it is possible to swim along the deck, through the remains of the superstructure from end to end, this makes a great dive. To the trained eye its still possible to identify the remains of the funnel and also the foremast. A short swim, following the line of the funnel, will bring you to an none detonated 1000lb bomb sitting upright in the sand. There’s certainly a lot to be explored just inside. After nearly 60 years nature has worked magic on the ship wreck and it is home to angelfish, batfish, groupers, stingrays, barracuda, wrasse, butterfly fish, crabs, and nudibranchs.
As the ship itself is an incredible 120 meters, or 394 feet, in length. It is covered in marine life that has transformed the ship’s remains into an underwater haven. You will find a variety of hard and soft corals, sea fans, nudibranchs, gorgonians, hydroids, anemones, big-eyed trevally, jacks, gobies, lizardfish and Barracuda for all levels of divers to experience the breathtaking beauty of this wreck. 81
