St Luke’s Day-Care services making a difference

‘I vividly remember the first day we went to St Luke’s…I felt a sigh of relief as we finally had someone who was there to share what we were going through in our lives and they had the time to talk to us. It was very comforting and I thank God for giving us the opportunity to meet such wonderful staff.’ Full story on page 2.

St Luke’s supporting patients in our Day-Care Unit

On 1 November 2010, I had to take dad to A&E at Northwick Park Hospital to remove 2.5 litres of fluid from his lungs.

From then on, there were various tests, hospital trips and operations until we finally got his diagnosis. Obviously as someone who is very attached to her father and the eldest child, this came as a big shock to me and indeed to all of us in our family. But we all believe in God and that belief helped us manage life with Radiotherapy at Mount Vernon Hospital and then chemotherapy at Northwick Park Hospital.

My dad, Sivapragasam Arumugam was diagnosed with Mesothelioma cancer which affects the lining of the lungs due to Asbestos exposure. He joined an Asbestos company as an accountant during the mid-1960s and left as a director in the early 1980s.

I felt a sigh of relief as we finally had someone who was there to share what we were going through in our lives

I vividly remember the first day we went to St Luke’s; it was like going in and meeting angels in heaven. Honestly, I never knew anything about hospices and what they did, until I met the kindest and friendliest staff ever. I felt a sigh of relief as we finally had someone who was there to share what we were going through in our lives and they had the Dr Denton and all the staff at the time to talk to us. It was very chemo unit (St Mark’s) provided us comforting and I thank God for with excellent care and attention. giving us the opportunity to meet My dad’s scan showed improvement such wonderful staff. and both my mum and dad went to Los Angeles for the birth of my My dad enjoys every nephew in June 2011.

After a year, my dad’s condition deteriorated and we had to start chemo again in July 2012. It was harder this time as he had lost a lot of weight and had gone from about 70kg to 48kg. He could no longer go for any walks and my mother had to help him with his personal care during the day and I had to do this at night. During September 2012, we were referred to St Luke’s Day Care.

minute of his Wednesday visits to Day-Care

My dad experiences pain when he sits for a long time because of his heavy weight loss and the massages he had at St Luke’s helped to relax his body and give him a good sleep. He enjoys every minute of his

Wednesday visits to Day-Care and really appreciates the help he gets from all the staff and volunteers. He likes meeting other patients who are in a similar situation and makes it lively by singing to them as he is not just an accountant but also a radio artist, actor, song writer and singer! I still remember returning home after our first visit to the hospice and visiting their website. The first thing that caught my eye was their fundraising abseil event taking place on the 14 October 2012. I signed up to do that with our son Kumaran (12 years) and was very excited that we could do something very small in return for the great work that the hospice does. My parents and my friend, Tammy came to support us at the event. Both my son and I climbed and abseiled the wall and then suddenly my husband gave us all a pleasant surprise by abseiling too!

Sivapragasam’s disease had stabilised in October 2012 and the family have continued their fundraising efforts for St Luke’s and we would like to thank them for their support.

BAPS Charities Cancer Care: Living With Cancer

BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir hosted a conference on ‘Living with Cancer’ in January in partnership with St Luke’s and Macmillan Cancer Support. The event was open to anyone with questions and concerns or who was interested in learning more about cancer. The event followed on from a ‘Welfare for the Elderly’ seminar where St Luke’s volunteer ambassador, Chandni Shah talked about the care on offer at St Luke’s.

Ramesh taking part in St Luke’s Fire and Glass Walk event

St Luke’s Trustee shares his story

Ramesh Bhanderi is a Fundraising Committee member on the board of trustees. Ramesh says, ‘Charities exist to create a better society. Trustees serve as volunteers and have the ultimate responsibility for running a charity, for its properties, finances and the employment of staff and volunteers. I have served as a trustee in my own community, Shree Kutch Leva Patel Community. This was a challenging position for me from which I gained vast experience in the charitable sector and after 16 years, stepped aside. In 2010, I first experienced the work of a hospice when a friend of mine received his end of life care at Pembridge Palliative Care Unit. I was moved by the care that was provided to my friend and equally embarrassed by my lack of understanding of this invaluable community care. I was elected a trustee of St Luke’s Hospice in 2011 after responding to an advertisement in a weekly Asian newspaper, Gujarat Samachar. Harrow and Brent are two of the most diverse boroughs in the country and as such the trustees try and ensure varied community representation on the trustee board.

Being a trustee has been immensely rewarding, providing both expected and unexpected opportunities for personal development. I have had the opportunity to attend various events on behalf of the hospice and meet people from diverse backgrounds who all work for the betterment of the community at large.’

The conference included talks from patients who have been affected by cancer who shared the importance of having a positive attitude, being open and honest about the diagnosis with family and friends and being aware of the treatment choices available. St Luke’s Community Team Leader, David Smith explained the role of the hospice and emphasised that St Luke’s is not just for cancer patients but for any chronic illnesses that cannot be cured. He also explained the role of support at home, as well as the Day-Care and In-Patient facilities. Alan Watts from St Luke’s provided a sound therapy and relaxation session. Representatives from Macmillan Cancer support explained the main signs and symptoms of cancer, and the importance of screening. Information stands were open throughout the event for visitors to browse and ask questions. Would you like to organise a talk or visit for your community group or organisation? Would you like to be a hospice volunteer ambassador, helping to spread the word about St Luke’s care? Contact Pam Russell on 0208 282 8040 who would be delighted to hear from you.

Volunteer to support St Luke’s patients in their homes Would you like to join a new venture to support our Hospice at Home team by helping patients to achieve the best possible quality of life during the final stages of their illness in their own home? Volunteers would listen and talk to patients and provide respite for carers. They would help to wash and feed patients as well as provide social support.

St Luke’s Hospice at Home Health Care Assistant (HCA) employee, Doris Davis shares what her work involves. ‘My days at work are never the same and I could have three patients which I visit three times in a day. I plan my day in a way that ensures each patient receives the personal hospice care they need and I also support the patients’ families by giving them a break from their carer role. On arrival I spend some time with the patient to find out how they are and with their consent I give a bed bath or assist with a shower, help to dress them, change their bed sheet and make the bed. It is a great feeling when a patient really appreciates even the most little of things I do such as washing their hair as they may not have been able to do this whilst being in hospital.

Patients and their families have a sense of control over the care we provide them. This helps to keep their life as close to their normal routine as possible which in turn makes them feel more at ease. We spend longer periods of time with them if needed, to support them through difficult situations. We respect patients’ wishes and what they want from our visits. Our goal is to support the patient and not to change their life but to make them as comfortable as possible.’ If you would like to volunteer by supporting the work of a Hospice at Home HCA, visit www.stlukes-hospice.org/hospiceathomevolunteering, email volunteering@stlukeshospice.org or telephone 020 8382 8000. If successful, you will be trained, supported and supervised by a Hospice at Home Registered Nurse. If you would like to work as a Hospice at Home HCA, telephone 020 8382 8000.

Legacies making a difference – a family story From left to right: Danny; his father, Kevin; brother, Simeon; niece, Lotty (2); mum, Val and his sister-in-law, Sarah. At the front: Danny’s daughters, Aya (7) and Elianne (8)

Gifts in Wills are a vital source of income for St Luke’s Hospice. Without the support of our generous legators, St Luke’s would not be able to continue to provide free end of life care to the people of Harrow and Brent. Danny Beever gives us an account of his father’s legacy to St Luke’s. Danny’s father, Kevin Beever was a chemical engineer in Sudbury and a keen supporter of St Luke’s for over 10 years. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer by a specialist GP just 10 weeks before he passed away.

Danny said, ‘I was in Croatia with my children for the summer when my brother called me with the news. Although cancer hadn’t been confirmed, I somehow knew that it would be terminal. It’s difficult to say how I felt then. I guess I was as accepting as possible and kept on telling myself that I wasn’t the first person to be going through this. At the same

time I suppose that I put my head in the sand and pretended that it wasn’t real.

My father was admitted to St Luke’s InPatient Unit. While we were there, ALL the staff were so unbelievably nice to us. I haven’t got words to describe our appreciation. Kind words, cups of tea etc. My father had known about St Luke’s for a long time, but I guess this was mainly from taking donations to the shop near Harrow Weald garage. He also took part in the Hospice’s Lottery and he left £5000 in his Will to St Luke’s.’

As a thank you to St Luke’s for all the care

that was given to his dad, Danny has taken part in a number of fundraising challenges including the skydive, and the Jail and Bail event in March where he was arrested and raised sponsorship to pay for his release. Danny hopes to raise £1400 and says, ‘I’m sure my dad would be very proud of what I am doing. My father was a very loving man, especially to his family.’ If you would like to find out more about leaving a gift in your Will to St Luke’s Hospice then please contact Pam Russell on 020 8382 8040 or email prussell@stlukes-hospice.org.

Sunderland’s syndicate get a St Luke’s Lottery win! St Luke’s Hospice runs its own weekly Lottery draw. Each week subscribers have the chance to win one of 15 prizes including the jackpot of £1000! Caroline Brosnan – daughter of the Sunderland family, shares her winner’s story.

‘My family and I have lived in Harrow and have known about St Luke’s all of our lives. There are 15 of us in total with four generations. We have known a few people that have used the wonderful services that St Luke’s provides and my niece, Kate Gammell has been a fundraiser for them for eight years now.

6

After being part of the national lottery as a syndicate, we decided to join St Luke’s lottery as

a syndicate and also as individual members. It’s usually me who organises the family lottery syndicate. We agreed that whatever we’d win would go into a kitty for the whole family to enjoy.’ Not long after joining, the Sunderland family had won £1000. Caroline adds, ‘I was going through my post one day when I came across an ordinary looking letter which had a £1000 cheque. I couldn’t believe we’d won. As we wanted all the family to share the win, the first occasion that popped up was my dad’s retirement so we all went out for a nice meal to the Hilton in Watford to celebrate. There’s still some winnings left over and we plan to put it towards my brother-in-laws 50th birthday this September. We are hoping to book him a trip to New York!’

If you would like to join St Luke’s lottery scheme and be in with a chance to win £1000 like the Sunderland family, phone 020 8382 8022/8097 (Wednesdays to Fridays) for your subscription form or visit www.stlukeshospice.org/lottery.
