KO H L E R ® S I N K S From washing dishes to prepping food, your sink will see a lot of action. So when it's time to select your sink, consider style, shape and size. Here are some key things to think about:

TYPE OF SINK Drop-in and under-mount are two of the most popular choices. Drop-in sinks sit on top of the counter and are less expensive to install, but tougher to keep clean due to the edges. Under-mount sinks sit under the countertop providing a clean and modern look. Apron or farmhouse sinks have an exposed panel in the front and are merely a design preference versus a functional choice.

1 , 2 O R 3 B OW L S Think about how you use your sink. Do you want a separate area for food prep, one side for washing the other for drying, or do you want a larger surface area to fit your biggest pot?

M AT E R I A L Kitchen sinks are made of various materials. They can be shiny stainless steel, colorful enamel on cast iron or fused solid surface. Stainless sinks can give a contemporary look with sleek lines. Enamel cast iron sinks come in multiple colors, designs and are very durable. As a result of their durability, they are also heavier which means additional support will need to be installed. Solid surface sinks are rimless and seamlessly fused to the adjacent solid surface counter, creating a contemporary look that’s easy to clean.

SIZE AND SHAPE While it seems obvious, fit the sink to your space. You don’t want to select a large sink in a kitchen with limited counter space. Also, know the depth of your counters. Round sinks can be dramatic, but provide less usable work space. Large sinks can be more functional, but may require a larger cabinet.

M AT E R I A L S A N D F I N I S H E S Faucets come in a number of materials and finishes such as chrome, brushed and polished nickel, polished brass, oil-rubbed bronze, white, black and stainless steel. Simply find the look you like. Polished surfaces look great, but require constant wiping due to fingerprints and water spots. Also, consider the finish on your cabinet hardware as you may want your faucet and hardware to have the same finish.

HANDLE OPTIONS Single-handle faucets tend to be more contemporary in appearance. Two-handled faucets are easier to regulate temperature and water flow. Whichever you choose, the decision is largely driven by your personal preference. The one-touch option allows you to turn your faucet on and off with ease. However, to change water pressure and temperature, the user must still use the knob. Sprayers are another great option and help in the kitchen. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget to decide if you want a built in or standalone sprayer.

You will have more design options here than in any other part of your kitchen design. Here are some ways to minimize backsplash decision overload.

D E T E R M I N E YO U R S T Y L E Do you want a square-clean look or a decorative-textured look? Do you like high contrast? How about shiny? When you start out, find examples of texture, shine and color that you like.

P L A N T H E W H O L E LO O K The backsplash must work with the flooring, cabinets and especially the countertop. Never look for tile without a sample of the countertop design you have chosen.

LIGHTING If possible, look at your tile options under the type of lighting you are planning for your kitchen. Under-mount versus overhead lighting will have a big impact on the color and reflectivity of your tile. When considering your choices, always hold the tile up in the direction it will hang.

AESTHETICS VERSUS MAINTENANCE If you are putting tile around ranges and sinks, it is inevitable that food and grease will get on the tile. Textured, rougher and uneven surfaces, particularly natural stone, can look dramatic. However, they require more frequent cleaning and natural stone should be resealed every year.

LIVE WITH IT Take it home for a few days and see where your eye gravitates.

H OW M U C H COV E R AG E Small boards of colorful glass tiles are beautiful. But if you need to cover a lot of wall space, think about mixing and matching with more basic designs like subway tiles. A large wall full of shiny glass can overwhelm a room.
