FLOOR FORUM INTERNATIONAL WISHES YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A SUCCESSFUL 2019!

‘Wooden floor vendors have a significant advisory role’ Several intrinsic features of wooden floors lay the foundation for its success. Wood is a natural, live, and at the same time timeless and durable material, which gives the interior character and beauty. It is healthy, anti-static, free of dust and particles, and with no risk of allergies. With the right finish and basic maintenance, it withstands the effects of daily use. For Corinne Verges (Beauflor-BerryAlloc®) it is clear that consumer knowledge of the types of wooden floors and that ever so important finish is still below par. In those areas wooden floor vendors have a significant advisory role. The strong points of solid parquet seem to be somewhat more well known, but the strong features of multi-layer parquet in the area of stability and easy fitting are still obviously Julia Egeler, underexposed. Solid parquet still has great (Parquet Product Manager) powers of attraction, partly because it is still a traditional product which makes customised work and even manual work possible. Consumers will probably always regard solid parquet as ‘the’ authentic parquet. Nevertheless, multi-layer wooden floors are gradually removing solid parquet from its throne. Julia Egeler comments: ‘The diminishing availability of wood and thereby the rising price makes solid parquet financially less affordable. Furthermore, finishes for multi-layer parquet are getting more and more sophisticated. The latter attracts consumers for various reasons such as the easy fitting, large sizes, and its excellent stability, especially with floor heating. Whatever type of parquet it is, oak is nevertheless still the undisputed “king of the wood sorts” and the permanent fixture which it always has been. The endless options in terms of shades, sizes, types, and fitting patterns make oak so versatile. Then there’s the fact that the slow growth of oak wood ensures that the wood is very hard and has excellent physical and mechanical qualities. The fact that oak comes from sustainably managed forests in France or elsewhere in Europe inspires confidence. A number of Scandinavian wood sorts are also becoming more popular. What is quite clear is that the advance of tropical wood sorts has ground to a halt, partly thanks to international measures against uncontrolled deforestation and illegal cutting. We need not lament the loss of the special look of some tropical wood sorts, because thanks to colours and certain (thermal) treatments we can offer virtually the same look with our preferred types of wood. The fact that the look is influenced by the finish is clear. Matt is at the top of the list.’ As for which type of finish is most suitable, depending for instance on the use, clients’ knowledge is again far too limited. ‘There, too, is a job for the vendor/adviser,’ concludes Julia Egeler, head of the parquet product department.

It also boasts great mid-abrasion for better adhesion and no clogging, as well as superior build and filling power. DOMOTEX 2019: ‘CREATE ‘N’ CONNECT’ THE RENEWAL FROM 2018 GOES ON laminate. Hall 13 also presented a summary of the most recent floor applications and installation products and systems.

Theme and ‘expo in expo’ The main theme of the show was ‘UNIQUE YOUNIVERSE’ with the focus clearly on the growing trend of individualisation in the interior. And so, that theme recurred everywhere, not least in a brandnew initiative in Hall 9, namely an inspirational stroll through trends, innovation, and lifestyle. Amongst other things, this section accommodated the ‘Framing Trends’ exhibition, an exhibition where both established enterprises and successful newcomers and artists could bridge the main theme. This section had four zones to introduce visitors to out-of-the-box ideas. The exhibition generated strong interaction with visitors.

Some figures Stand Floor Forum International

Domotex 2018 was special in every way. The new layout seemed to satisfy the yearning for logic and simplicity. The Framing Trends exhibition area certainly made it possible to deviate from well trodden paths within the linear interaction of tradition and trends. Whilst the theme in 2018 (‘UNIQUE YOUNIVERSE’) concentrated strongly on the growing trend of individualisation in the interior, the 2019 show will be devoted to ‘connectivity’. Over half of the exhibition space was booked early in April once the theme was announced. A success story beckons.

What did Domotex 2018 bring? New layout in the halls The halls were neatly clustered so that associated products related to each other in a new and logical harmony. Halls 2 to 4 displayed the world’s biggest range of hand-woven carpets. Halls 5 to 7 showed visitors a unique range of mechanically woven carpets. Hall 8 exhibited the latest carpet creations by the most innovative designers and trademarks. Flexible floor coverings and vinyl tiles were located in halls 11 and 12. Halls 12 and 13 accommodated parquet, wooden floors, and

8

Floor Forum International 99

According to Dr Andreas Gruchow of Deutsche Messe’s managing board, the success of this show was due to the increased number of exhibitors, the good visibility for visitors, an abundance of innovations, and the healthy atmosphere in the halls. The figures do not lie. 1,615 exhibitors took up 106,000m² of exhibition space and welcomed 45,000 visitors from over 100 countries. Over 65% of visitors came from abroad (60% from Europe, 25% from Asia, and 11% from the USA). Amongst the visitor profile there was a noticeable rise in interior traders, architects, designers, and contractors.

New Designs for a Connected World The main theme for Domotex 2019 is ‘CREATE ‘N’ CONNECT’. The theme refers to the mega-trend of contemporary connectivity. Indeed, connectivity affects every aspect of our lives, work, and society. Technological and digital changes accelerate that development and new cultural patterns and habits pervade the new approach of designs. Obviously, the theme of ‘connectedness’ also has strong symbolic and emotional aspects. Floors play a major part in that due to the endless possible designs. It is the floor which provides the base and spirit of the rooms in which we live and work. We are always on ‘a floor’. Floors are also integrated design objects. They inspire us, direct us, and create a platform for human contact.

Framing Trends

A ‘stamp’ from the parquet market

This philosophical approach to the theme finds specific expression in Framing Trends, which will again offer a platform in 2019 for companies to present innovative products or designs. Exceptional products or product presentations are possible in ‘Flooring Spaces’ where the theme of connectivity comes entirely into its own.

Parquet and wooden floors might be only a niche in the full range of floor coverings, but niches, too, can inspire. This is probably the first time we’ve been able to announce that a phenomenon from the history of parquet has influenced a theme at Domotex, but this is true of the 2019 show. And so, we’re seizing our chance to mention it. ‘Connectivity’ is good for just about anything. ‘Herringbone’ will be a major theme at Domotex 2019, and not just in the wooden flooring section, but also over the entire span of halls 12 and 13. We find herringbone in laminate, but also with elastic floors. Moreover, exhibitors are only too pleased to stress that fact. All sorts of variants in terms of sizes, materials, and colours can be seen in connection with this amazing theme. The fact that herringbone takes on this role is due to its individuality and novelty. Herringbone is an ‘outsider’ within fitting designs. The impact on the whole interior is great. Strips drill through the room like a spear! Pointed whirlwinds ensure that the room is constantly in motion. The name reflects the herringbone fitting method; the floor is made from approximately the same parts as ordinary strip parquet, but the sections are fitted in the shape of a herringbone. This means the head side is fitted along the length of the floorboard at an angle of 90°. Herringbone comes completely into its own when surrounded by an edge and with locking friezes (a belt of strips fitted in the other direction to the parquet).

Contented voices The fact that both exhibitors and visitors welcomed the innovative approach in 2018 was obviously a fundamental reason for the decision to consolidate these major changes. 2018 was a sort of experimental year for the future. Was it a success? Absolutely! Maurizio Battiolissi, owner of the gallery in Turin which bears his name, thought the changes were a big step forward because they ‘reinforce the interaction between visitors and exhibitors and help them to share experiences’. Fritz Langauer, owner of Oritop in Austria, described the approach as ‘even better than in the past. Everything is well organised. Since we have clients from China and the United States, the international approach is a great help’. Gerhard Ter Hürne, managing director of Ter Hürne noted particularly the ‘sheer interest and great willingness on the part of visitors to immerse themselves in new ideas’. At the same time, Ter Hürne also encountered vast interest in sales abroad. Visitors, too, were full of praise, especially several architects and designers.

Once again, this will be the ideal place to chat informally or meet business relations and, of course, to enjoy a drink and a snack. You can get acquainted with our various publications (for France, the Benelux, and other countries) and together we can look forward to all the good things which 2019 has to offer. As always, our stand will have a special floor. The B:Hard, an 11mm thick engineered parquet floor with specially processed wood veneer, is supplied by Stöckl Parkett from Austria. The type of floor fitted is the Type Crack Krystall (grey) in 22.3 x 220cm. This floor is 100% ecological, partly due to the low consumption of hardwood and low formaldehyde content. The B:Hard is a floor with tremendous technical performances, something which the busy stand of Floor Forum and Floor Forum International certainly needs (up to almost three times harder than solid oak and unique Bfl-S1 fire class & heat conductivity of 0.065m²K/W)! The silence of the floor at the stand is helped by the excellent subfloor from Mac Lean (‘Isosilence’, 2.8mm thick).

LOBA

In addition to the tried and tested MarkantColor and Markant Transparent hard wax oils, LOBA is launching a completely new product, MarkantNature, at the beginning of the year: this combines the properties of a classic hard wax oil with the popular look of raw wood. Its special formulation makes the wood surface appear untreated, preserving its natural color without intensifying it. At the same time, MarkantNature gives the floor an even, visually full surface that reliably defies dirt and water. Besides, MarkantNature achieves amazing optical highlights if applied on a layer of a lighter MarkantColor shade. LOBA is pleased to personally present the new products at Domotex 2019 from January 11 to 14, 2019 in Hanover, Hall 13, stand C23.

Mac Lean Be bold, be colorfull! With the expanded coloration system by LOBA

The New Year Will be Colorful – with the LOBA Coloration System! The expanded color palette of HS 2K ImpactOil Color and MarkantColor opens up infinite varieties. LOBA will be presenting its expanded coloration concept in the LOBASOL® product range at the beginning of the new year. The color palette of the well-proven 2K High Solid ImpactOil Color and the MarkantColor natural hard wax oil has been revised and standardized. From January 2019, 17 colors each are available: three basic colors (White, Gray, Black), seven wood colors (new color: Walnut) and seven trend colors (e.g. Chalk, Oyster, Clay). Countless other shades can be created by mixing colors. The colors of ImpactOil Color are even accentuated if the PreTone water-based pigment stain is applied prior to ImpactOil Color. Thereby, very strong shades (e.g. a bright white) as well as trendy two-color effects can be achieved.

Both construction markets and specialist dealers find a unique partner in Mac Lean with its motto ‘home of ideas’. Subfloors, skirting boards, and accessories together form a major pillar in their assortment and they aim to show this at Domotex 2019 in Hall 13, stand C02. Trends and traditions are different from country to country and no matter the nationality, culture, climate or budget one wants to have beautiful, reliable, long-lasting and eco-friendly flooring. No wonder why hardwood floorings have become so popular around the world. Modern engineered hardwood floors can be used in commercial facilities, private houses, apartments with underfloor heating systems and even on yachts.

Sawn hardwood lamellas not only preserve the rich grain texture but also have no internal checks that could cause face splits later on; - All 3 layers are joint together with the use of high-adhesion hotmelt polyurethane formaldehyde-free glues and finished with eco-friendly UV-oil, Hardwax oil or lacquer ensuring no delamination and superb wear-resistance.

Coswick Ltd. is a high-end hardwood flooring manufacturer with over 25 years of international flooring supply experience. Company unique fully integrated manufacturing facility operating from logs to ready-done prefinished products allows producing extremely wide and flexible assortment, controlling quality at every stage and getting results incomparably higher to that of industry standards.

Coswick 3-layer Solid engineered hardwood flooring has hardwood in all 3 layers and, as opposed to classic engineered floors with softwood or HDF core, is characterized by: - Highly balanced construction due to the use of hardwood birch as a middle core and base lamella thus making a perfect symmetry and enhancing internal balance of hardwood planks, reducing twisting or warping effect; - Hard cross-laid interconnected solid birch bars in the middle core making flooring shrink and expand less at humidity variations; - Cork compensators added every 15 cm to balance internal stress in case of moisture effect and as a result helping flooring to withstand to humidity fluctuations;

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM AN ACOUSTIC FLOOR? FLOATING FITTING OFTEN REQUIRES SOUND IMPROVEMENT OPERATIONS

Photo – Parkettfreund

We often hear people mixing up terms such as sound insulation and sound absorption. Maybe it’s time to remind ourselves of a few ‘phenomena’. After all, if a product is used as a ‘solution’ to a problem, familiarising ourselves properly with that problem would appear to make sense.

24

Floor Forum International 99

What is sound? When does it disturb us, why is that, and, in particular, what can you do about it? This problem arises with floating floors. The solution comes mainly from subfloors which improve the sound. However, sound improvement is not necessarily ‘sound insulation’.

Glued versus floating

Frequency expressed in hertz

If we fully glue a floor onto a screed, that virtually eliminates the problem of noise. Indeed, the entire floor construction then forms one connected mass with no air layers. This has consequences for both sound in the room itself and sound spread to the room below. The way in which we perceive sound is obviously affected by the type of floor. The various types of floors score differently, depending partly on fitting conditions. Flexible floors such as cork, vinyl, linoleum, carpet, and such like score best and that depends partly on the thickness. The issue of sound transfer with floating floors is another story. Floating floors do not form a connected mass with the subfloor and the air layer under a floating floor ensures sound transfer. Even the effect (impact) of walking on a floor is often disturbingly audible. We’re all familiar with the irritating ‘click sound’ of laminate and other floating floors.

The pitch determines the tone of sound, the number of times per second (frequency) that the condensations and dilutions of the sound vibrations occur. A human being can hear frequencies from about 20 hertz to almost 20,000 hertz. Low frequency sounds are frequencies below 100 hertz (for example, sounds in the house or techno sounds), whilst high frequency sounds are frequencies above 4,000 hertz. What we eventually perceive subjectively when we hear a sound with a particular frequency is indicated by the word ‘pitch’.

Core concepts – a reminder In order to understand the measures presented here to improve the acoustics, we must understand a few basic concepts with regard to sound. We will briefly define the concepts of sound, frequency and decibel, impact and airborne sound, insulation, and absorption.

What is sound? Sound is all the vibrations perceived by the ear. These vibrations spread themselves in a wave motion through a medium and ensure that the sound is spread. The most popular medium is air, but sound can spread in just about any material e.g. stone, concrete, water, or glass. The various characteristics or quantities which are important for expressing and measuring sound are clarified briefly below.

Sound level expressed in dB (decibels) The sound level of audible sound ranges from 0dB (hearing threshold) to about 140dB (pain barrier). The human ear hears low frequencies less well. We can take account of that ear sensitivity by correcting the sound level (in dB). The result is a ‘weighted’ sound level which is expressed in dB(A). And so, the addition of an ‘A’ indicates that the sound level is in relation to what is heard by the human ear.

Impact sound and airborne sound As regards the spread of sound, we need to draw a distinction between airborne sound and impact sound. Airborne sound spreads via the air, impact sound via structures which are connected to each other (vibrations which spread via the floor, ceiling, beams, and such like). We can take some simple yet effective measures (e.g. vibration-free mats) to counteract impact sound transfer. However, it is much more difficult to counteract the nuisance caused by airborne sound. Airborne sound insulation is essentially about reducing the sound level produced in a particular room as much as possible via the insulation capacity of the partition constructions.

Special

Subfloors : part III

Sound insulation and absorption People sometimes get these two concepts mixed up, but they are two completely different things. Sound insulation means suppressing sound between two rooms. To that end, partition constructions have to be insulated efficiently. Sound absorption determines the amount of sound absorbed in one room. Sound absorption in bare rooms with hard materials is low and sound echo (reverberation) great, and that leads to a hollow tone and resonance. The more soft elements (e.g. cloths, carpet, or absorbent panels) are present in the room, the greater the sound absorption and the less resonance.

Subfloors to improve sound Floating floors clearly do not form a connected mass with the subfloor. The air layer under a floating floor ensures the spread of sound and the effect (impact) of walking on a floor is often disturbingly audible.

Specific subfloors To improve the acoustics with floating floors, manufacturers offer very specific subfloors which are tested in accordance with the prevailing European standards (EN ISO 717-1 and 2 and EN ISO 140-1,2). The way in which tests are carried out on the subfloors and the way in which suppliers (producers and dealers) present their products confirm that there is no such thing as sound reduction ‘in and of itself’. The capacity of a subfloor to reduce sound is always noted ‘in relation to’ the final floor. And so, we get a certain reduction in sound with subfloor X, if it is used with floor Y.

U310 is a polyester glued fleece which reduces tension in glued parquet and laminate. This fleece is a problem-solver with doubtful subfloors. It is damp-proof and has an isolating effect. The extra mounting height is a mere 1.5 to 2mm, including the glue thickness. Finally, Bona U340 is a polyester fibre-plate subfloor which reduces tension for the final floor covering such as ceramic, natural stone, wooden floors, etc. The high compressive strength can cope with high pressure (5.0kN/m²). It is suitable for both domestic and commercial use. It improves acoustic attenuation considerably.

Self-adhesive subfloors

Parkettfreund

For some years now, technological subfloors have been emerging which are equipped with one or two self-adhesive layers. These subfloors are actually sophisticated fitting systems to ensure quick and easy fitting and help greatly to improve acoustic comfort at the same time. The self-adhesive layer in some respects replaces glue and makes both subfloor and floor are part of the same mass.

What’s on the market? Bostik Bostik has for this purpose the insulation underlay based on cork rubber granulate, namely Nibolay TS 150. Nibolay TS 150 is a polyurethane cork rubber granulate mixture which is 3mm thick. This subfloor is absolutely ideal as an underlay to reduce sound (3mm yields a reduction of up to about 18dB) and provide heat insulation to improve living comfort under wood-engineered parquet, laminate, and solid parquet and on substrates of rough concrete, cement covering floors, wooden plank floors, chipboard, or on existing substrates such as parquet, ceramic tiles, PVC, and linoleum floor coverings. It is the combination of the cork and rubber which yields an improvement in the impact sound (with Nibolay TS 150 there is an improvement of 18dB).

Bona Bona presents three subfloors, namely Bona U300, Bona U310, and Bona U340. Bona U300 is a subfloor of bound cork and rubber granulate and is used for parquet, laminate, and other floors. The material has a sound insulation effect. When it is glued to parquet, it reduces the tensions generated in the parquet and diverts them to the subfloor.

26

Floor Forum International 99

Parkettfreund, too, believes that the aim of a subfloor with floating floors is partly to reduce the sound of footsteps and transient noises. The best results are achieved with materials which contain a lot of air, such as PE foam. All 36 references in the Parkettfreund range improve the acoustics in the room. The thickness and material composition of these subfloors vary, depending on the range. The best products for this purpose are accommodated in the Acoustic Series. Acoustic Light + is the best option and reduces sound by 22dB. To reduce the sound of footsteps, you can best opt for products with a high density (PUR) such as the Acoustic Layer, which yields a reduction of around 30%. The subfloors can be used for parquet and laminate and three subfloors can also be used for LVT, due to their stability under high pressure. The materials used vary. They include thermo-plastic components (e.g. polyethylene), elastomeric (e.g. polyurethane), natural products (e.g. wood fibres), granulates, and mixed fibres (e.g. PU mixed minerals).

Laminate: click systems examined, a quality survey

FITTING A FLOOR … IN NO TIME AT ALL REFINED CLICK SYSTEMS MAKE LAMINATE ‘PORTABLE’

Photo – BerryAlloc®

If there’s one type of floor which we could call ‘engineered’ from its very beginning, it is undoubtedly laminate. From its very conception or ‘ discovery’, laminate has been the fruit of creative research work and a creative spirit. The floorboards, which so beautifully resemble the look of a wooden floor,

came from nothing. A plank with a photograph! You have to think of the idea at the time. Today, the plank is merely part of an ingenious flooring system which overflows with technological innovations.

Laminate: click systems examined, a quality survey

Technological in all respects Let’s be honest. To make a wooden floor, the necessary knowledge and experience of types of wood and a healthy dose of carpentry expertise will get you quite a long way. The right type of wood, dried properly, the right dimensions, correct thickness and sizes, and, yes, you have strip parquet. With laminate, things are completely different. Laminate is created at a crossroads of forms of technology. The base is related to wooden panel technology i.e. the bearer. The step from MDF to HDF already represented serious progress. Then there’s adhesive technology; various components have to be fastened together. Printing and photography play a part, as does chemistry, for the development of the finish. There is constant development in each of these technological fields and laminate has managed to follow those developments closely. Developing and printing decors can now be done digitally. Printing wood grain on paper can now be done with relief; embossing is a fact. Lacquers for the ultimate protection nowadays are UV lacquers. If progress is made in ‘a technological field’, laminate producers simply apply it.

Laminate sells itself When laminate emerged from nothing, many people regarded it somewhat scornfully as imitation and, yes, that’s what it was. What people didn’t yet realise in those days was that the reproach was also the major asset. Laminate traders put together bundles of sales arguments to get the product launched on the market. What was laminate in the first place? It was a budget-friendly alternative for anyone who loved parquet or wooden flooring, but couldn’t afford it. Or it was a renovation product for anyone who wanted a wooden floor, but didn’t have the available height, at least not without breaking up the existing floor. Laminate also represented a temporary solution i.e. a cheap floor which you could fit in expectation of better times. Others saw laminate as the perfect solution for tenants i.e. they wanted a wooden floor, but didn’t want to invest money in the landlord’s house. At all events, the portability of laminate was a big asset from the start. That portability is the fruit of an ingenious click system which makes it possible not only to fit laminate quickly, but also to dismantle it again without damaging it.

collections Eternity Long, Glorious, Glorious Luxury, and Glorious XXL. However, the effect of a classic parquet floor is also possible with, for instance, Chateau or very narrow strips with the ‘Finesse & Glorious Small’. The click system developed by BerryAlloc® is Duoloc. 5G is created under the licence owned by Välinge Innovation AB. With Duoloc, 5G, and Chateau Loc, BerryAlloc® awakens the odd jobber in all of us. Fitting becomes really easy. The fitting instructions also lend a hand. These floors can be fitted with or without extra tools. The lifelong guarantee is obviously a welcome bonus.

Quick-Step

In no time at all What does ‘in no time at all’ mean? In reality, it does mean a little bit of time. It means clicking the plank vertically along the length and sliding it into place horizontally before clicking it securely in place along the ends. That’s just about the common denominator of lots of systems. At all events, the technological wonder of laminate floors lies primarily in the click systems which have formed the subject of a whole series of patents for several years now. Nowadays, the patents are in the hands of a few, but the licences are used by various manufacturers. The various systems have grown together somewhat in recent years. An important point for attention is the tensile strength of the systems. After all, laminate is fitted floating. The core material (MDF of HDF) contains wood fibres, which, depending on the season, absorb a greater or lesser degree of damp (relative humidity!). The floor swells or shrinks as a result of this humidity. That also causes the objects on the floor (e.g. chairs, cupboards, or moveable items). The strength of the ‘lock system’ should prevent the joints from opening after a few seasons. The simplicity of the system should work in favour of all those other arguments e.g. temporary solution, portable, and dismountable.

Two pioneers BerryAlloc® BerryAlloc® presents an extensive range in diverse sizes. Extra wide or long floorboards, which make the room look bigger, are found in the

28

Floor Forum International 99

Quick-Step has developed its own click system, namely Uniclic. The system was introduced and licensed in 1997. The Uniclic click system has great horizontal and vertical pulling force to keep the floorboards neatly together. There is also ‘tension’ on Uniclic whereby the floorboards/planks connect well, there are no open joints, and the floor installation is waterproof. The Uniclic click system is the only click system which can be fitted very simply in different ways. This means that the floor can always be fitted perfectly, even in difficult situations. The most important thing is that the click system is simple and sturdy. This means it is not possible to make mistakes with the fitting and the connection stays intact for several decades. The system is designed in the material of the floor itself, namely HDF. The tension is a significant factor in the waterproof nature of a floor, but this is not sufficient for very wet conditions and frequent cleaning. Really damp rooms such as bathrooms are still a challenge. Quick-Step found a solution for this many years ago in the shape of waterproof laminate floors, which can be fitted in bathrooms perfectly well.

COUNTDOWN TO BAU 2019 MESSE MUNICH IS READY FOR ANOTHER 250,000 VISITORS

BAU 2019, the world’s top trade fair for architecture and building materials and systems, takes place in the Messe Munich from 14 to 19 January 2019. Once again, the organisers are expecting no fewer than 2200 exhibitors from over 45 countries and a good 250,000 visitors from all over the globe. No fewer than 200,000m² of serviceable exhibition space will be in use. What is on show? Architectural solutions, materials, and building systems for residential and project construction and materials for the interior. BAU presents solutions for new buildings and renovation or modernisation projects.

Focus on architects Every two years, this unique event brings together market leaders from the sector for a large-scale exchange of ideas within an entire sector. Moreover, BAU is also the most important rendezvous for architects and building engineers with an attendance of no fewer than 65,000 professional visitors. The exhibited materials are grouped into product categories and themes. The central themes on which the show is

Visit www.floor-forum.com

based play a key part within all sections. Obviously, there are also all sorts of supporting activities such as seminars with experts from all over the world.

Continuity in terms of themes Building is in a constant state of development. Current themes need to be examined, but can never be covered exhaustively in one study session. Nevertheless, it seems that one of the merits of BAU is to allow themes and the approach to them to develop with the reality during the show. A good example of such a theme is ‘the building sector in an urban context’. That subject was covered in 2013 and is now being taken up again.

Urban development Half of the world lives in an urban environment. According to forecasts, by 2050, no less than 75% of all people will live in a town or city. Future developments on this theme were considered in depth at BAU 2013. Research has shown that an urban form of community does have benefits, certainly from the point of view of energy. A good 40% of

Floor Forum International 99

29

Preview BAU Munich (D)

all energy is consumed in homes. About 75% of that is consumed on heating, whilst the rest goes on lighting, cooling, domestic appliances, communication, etc. All indications are that an ‘integrated city’ with houses with optimised energy consumption is the future. The solutions for taking on these challenges were also considered at BAU 2013.

Urban living in 2019 That once forecast flow towards the city is still continuing. An acute shortage of housing and the astronomical costs of building works in an urban context mean that building more homes is high on the political agenda. It is the task of governments, developers, and investors to supervise the urban increase in dwelling density carefully and direct it efficiently. New development models are needed for that purpose. New software and computerised processes can certainly make a contribution in that respect, even if it is only to expose as yet unused possibilities. Forum A4 examines future-oriented and intelligent concepts for the individual building, the urban environment, and the city. Living and working and private and public life are linked to each other in order to obtain a better society for everyone with more open spaces, despite more densely populated cities. The housing problem is so acute in the German Big Seven (Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Düsseldorf that major building projects are being relocated to smaller cities such as Augsburg, Freiburg, and Münster. Forum

C2 studies remarkable building projects in those locations. Forum B0 sheds light on the integration of old and new buildings.

Mass production versus individuality Another nice theme! More and more articles are being written about ‘modular’ construction. Modules are components of a building, whether or not they are just surfaces or surfaces with a function (e.g. a pre-fabricated kitchen/bathroom). We used to call that ‘prefab’ and it is gradually gaining acceptance again. Modules can be built in the factory in advance and, moreover, this can be done on a large scale. That means mass production, but how do we reconcile ‘mass production’ with the growing ‘individualisation’ and even ‘personalisation’ in architecture? The driving forces behind the growth of pre-fabricated projects are the vast increase in the population, migration, mobility, and, in particular, vast demographic changes which are occurring against the background of a pressing lack of time. Rapid assembly on site, perfect cost control and timing, and the guarantee of industrial quality are certainly all solid arguments and incentives. At Forum A4 at BAU 2019, visitors will hear that the efficiency of mass production is not at odds with individuality. Architects get a huge magic box of concepts which they can use at once in combination to design a unique project as they wish. Creativity is still needed. Forum B0 applies this issue to renovation and modernisation projects.

KLEIBERIT Bonding of Design Flooring/LVT

Constant new trends in flooring design, use of new materials and production methods, require new solutions for high quality and reliable bonding. No other element in interior living space has more stress than flooring. LVT decorative materials are enjoying ever increasing popularity. Bonding the ca. 2.5 mm thick PVC materials in different designs on different materials such as HDF, PVC, WPC, etc. is a challenge for the adhesive. KLEIBERIT succeeded in developing a new class of adhesives which combines all of the required properties – very good wetting on all substrates and decorative materials, resistance to plasticizers, and good processing properties in the flat lamination process. PUR Hotmelt Adhesive KLEIBERIT 716.8 is used for this application. Visit us in Hall B6 , Stand 127.

and BAU (Hall A5, Stand 125) in January 2019, the manufacturer will introduce additional profile systems with the patented 4.0 technology. Beyond that, the Lüdenscheid-based company will present a new clip system for laminate, parquet and hardwood flooring, which allows for a very stable installation with the most laying convenience. Whether it60 is continuing development or completely new profile systems - the aim of Küberit has always been a very convenient and safe handling for the craftsman, a clear added-value through product utility and consistently high quality. The standard for some of the new products is 15 the innovative 4.0 technology of the Profil-Systems PPS®-Champion. Drill hole laterally offset from the screed joint Küberit has also upgraded the proven PPS®-Champion flex, PPS®Champion Star, PPS®-AS and PPS®-XXL systems to the 4.0 standard during the product utility optimisation. Thus, in the future, the base profiles will have a standard width of 40 mm. With this product structure, the handling convenience of these profile systems increases significantly: the adhesive application area is 82% greater than with comparative profiles and thus enables improved adhesion with the screed floor. There is also the possibility of a drill hole laterally offset from the screed joint. New clip system for laminate and smooth surfaces In addition, a new clip system for laminate will premiere at the trade fairs in Hanover and Munich. It can be handled faster, more safely and flexibly. The system can be deployed in significantly more and varied installation conditions than comparable profiles. Furthermore, the market leader is following the design trend of smooth surfaces, and will present a proven screw system with a smooth surface in addition to the clip system. Profile systems with the greatest possible utility The very positive market response shows that the profile professionals of Lüdenscheid have taken the right path for their product strategy. In a recent survey, roughly 200 contractors selected the PPS®-Champion 4.0 as their most desired profile system, because of its easy-to-use product structure. “We shall continue down this path. The next product ideas, which combine sensible convenience of use for the handler with technical product value-added for the client, are already being discussed,”reports Lars Maier, Head of Germany Sales, on the future plans of Küberit.

Bamboo floors trends

BAMBOO ADDS SOME COLOUR IT’S HARD NOT TO CALL IT ‘PARQUET’

Photo – BambooTouch®

Couldn’t we just use the expression ‘ bamboo parquet’ for the reader’s comfort and the editor’s convenience? Wouldn’t that be a whole lot simpler than beating around the bush all the time? The problem is that convention won’t allow us to do so. In view of the minimal top layers which have been set out traditionally, it’s still an elementary condition that a floor has to be made from ‘wood’ in order to be called parquet. That’s the nub of the problem. Bamboo is a sort of grass, not a sort of wood. And so, these floors are not made from a branch, but rather from a ‘ blade’. These floors don’t come from a ‘trunk’, but from a ‘ blade’. It’s crazy, isn’t it? Yet, for the rest it’s just like ‘parquet’.

38

Floor Forum International 99

Colour and design determined in advance Two basic features are partly determined right from the start of bamboo floor production. And so, this happens in the transition from the ‘hollow blade’ to serviceable panels. Two types of designs, two types of colours; that’s where it all starts.

The colour of bamboo Sawing the bamboo stems into strips lengthwise is the first stage of production. The outermost green skin of the strips is removed using a special planer. Firstly, the strips have to dry and then they are planed again. Finally, they can be glued together in various ways to make panels. Before the strips are dried, they can undergo another special

treatment designed to burn up any sugars which may be present and kill micro-organisms. Under this treatment process, the strips are boiled in a tub for a few hours. In many cases a small amount of hydrogen peroxide is added during this boiling process to stimulate the process. This is the phase where the difference between natural (very light) and caramel (light brown) is created, something which recurs continually in floor producers’ collections.

Distressed (brushed)

The basic design

There is some connection between what we’ve said above about distressed and the emergence of real touch. Bamboo no longer has solely smooth finishes, but also finishes where the design of the decor can actually be felt.

Glueing the strips into panels is the second main production phase. The way in which the strips are glued together directly affects the look of both the panels and (afterwards) the final floor or other objects (e.g. furniture, table tops, and staircase steps) derived from the panels. There are two ways to glue the strips. Firstly, the strips can be pressed together horizontally and glued under high pressure. The result is a panel or plank with the typical bamboo knots clearly visible. Panels created in this way are called plain pressed. Secondly, the strips can be pressed sideways to yield a finer structure with the bamboo knots less visible. Panels pressed sideways are called side pressed.

It resembles parquet, and especially oak We’ve explained above how side-pressed bamboo has a fine structure with very few knots. The similarity with oak is striking and even a little misleading for non-connoisseurs. The natural version resembles untreated oak which has just been sandpapered; there is also a similarity with coloured oak (darker) in the caramel version. Trends from the parquet market even drift over into other fields.

Should this surprise us? It was only to be expected that distressed would make its mark here. It’s also rapidly becoming a trend. Not only the extremely dark finishes (smoked effects), but also mechanical operations such as brushing, hand-scraped, and such like are making their entry.

Embossing

Fitting patterns We’ve often noted that various fitting patterns from the world of parquet have been adopted in the world of bamboo floors. One of the commonly recurring and extremely popular designs is that of the so called strips on their sides or industrial parquet. Several vendors offer this light-hearted bamboo design in caramel, natural, dark, and alternating colours.

XXL Obviously, extremely large sizes are emerging here, too. Bamboo benefits from its great stability, which means that extra wide and long planks can be combined perfectly well with floor heating.

A world of colour Apart from existing shades with caramel and natural, the number of colours for bamboo floors has increased vastly. Bamboo colour has made its entry and the options are now endless. The assortment ranges from light-hearted and youthful colours to imitations of dark wood sorts such as wenge and panga panga. What certainly stands out in the range of colours are the tints which are emerging everywhere in the interior e.g. black, white, and grey. In both modern and highly classic interiors, these tints are generally doing very well and are also appearing in bamboo collections.

Sanding machines : part III

AND NOW THE EDGES REFINED SANDING MACHINES FOR THE ULTIMATE FINISH

Photo – Devomat Industries

What is the main difference between a parquet floor fitted by a DIY enthusiast and the work of a professional? The end result, obviously! The final finish! That’s the area where sheer expertise is backed up by professional tools and machines. Expertise and experience are usually required even to use those professional machines. Just try sandpapering an oak mosaic subfloor smooth without sucking up millimetres of durable oak wood into the dust bag. The same applies to the edge finish. The right tool is worth its weight in gold.

40

Floor Forum International 99

Machines complement each other Pre-finished parquet might have conquered the world, but as long as there are still floors fitted on site from A tot Z, sanding machines will always be an indispensable tool in the parquet floor fitter’s arsenal. Moreover, we are right to speak of an ‘arsenal’ because we now know that it is absolutely impossible to complete all sanding work satisfactorily with just one sanding machine. Whenever we open the web sites of sander manufacturers on the page where they give a list of their range of tools, we almost always see a small ‘fleet’ of tools in various

Sanding machines : part III

types, weights, and shapes. The belt sander and the rotary disc sander are absolutely essential. Floor fitters simply cannot manage without them. However, you can’t use either of them to finish neatly along the walls or in places which are difficult to reach such as under radiators. Those sanding machines aren’t suitable at all for sandpapering stairs. To sandpaper neatly against the skirting board, on stairs, and under radiators, we use the edge sander, a generally spoon-shaped sanding machine which reaches places which we cannot touch with belt or rotary disc sanders.

Weight, design, and dust suction The importance of the weight Edge and stair sanders are tools which are extremely easy to operate and their weight between 8 and 13kg (depending on the make) is very important for two reasons. On the one hand, the tools should not be too heavy because that would severely limit their use in places which are difficult to reach. Let’s not forget that a professional belt sander weighs up to 80kg (depending on the make). The weight of 10kg on average means that these tools are easy to manoeuvre and make it possible to work neatly along the wall. On the other hand, of course, the tool shouldn’t be too light either. Edge sanders make it possible to sandpaper in corners where it is often difficult to apply pressure. The sturdiness of the machines means that applying pressure is completely unnecessary. Finally, the weight of most edge sanders makes it possible to use these tools for sandpapering stairs.

and polishing to edge and stair sanding, etc. Nevertheless, we are also seeing how some parquet floor fitters are arming themselves with electrical hand tools for doing some jobs manually. Rotary and orbital manual sanders are useful tools for working in tight spaces and yet still achieving good results in places which are difficult to reach. In recent years, researchers have put a lot of effort into the ‘ergonomics’ of those tools. A handy design and a perfect weight division ‘spare’ the floor fitter’s arm muscles. The tools are obviously fitted with the necessary safety measures. Manual tools are also often easier than parquet sanders for sandpapering difficult edges on stairs and stair railings. Complementarity is key!

A selection from the range Alvaket

The secret of the spoon Edge and stair sanders are equipped with a rotary sanding disc which is usually 175mm and is housed in a sanding arm. That arm looks somewhat like a spoon. The minimal height of that sanding arm means that these tools can be used to sandpaper under radiators with no problem at all. Most machines provide two different sanding arms, a short one and a long one. The lengths vary considerably between makes, but, over the last few years, we have seen the emergence of more really short arms of 110 to 150mm as opposed to the normal average lengths of 250 to 300mm. Some things are obviously related to historical developments with regard to radiators. Whilst a few decades back radiators were extremely wide and machines therefore had to reach quite a long way in order to touch the wall under the radiator, modern radiators are now much narrower. Today, there is a saying: the flatter they are, the greater the design.

Dust extraction Dust extraction is an important topic for all sanding machines, from endless belt sanders to surface sanders and everything in between. Most tools were already fitted with strong dust extraction a few years ago with a suction turbine which rotates well above 10,000 revolutions a minute. Those revolutions, combined with the special design of the tools, ensure that dust is sucked up immediately, even from places which are difficult to reach. It is possible with various makes to connect different machines, including edge sanders, to an external dust extraction unit. Legislation is emerging in some regions which makes such external dust extraction mandatory. Some things are the result of the increasingly strict requirements in the field of health and safety at work.

Manual sanders The range of sanding machines is wide and complete amongst the well known manufacturers of parquet sanders. They ‘cover’ the entire spectrum, as it were: from rough sanding immediately after the fitting and fine sanding, intermediate sanding between coats of lacquer,

42

Floor Forum International 99

Removing thick coats of lacquer is a time-consuming and tiring job, especially along edges. The easy-to-handle GECKO - FLEX, developed by floor fitters for floor fitters, means that removing old coats of lacquer and paint and the traditional edge sanding are no longer a problem. This flexible edge sander is also absolutely ideal for stairs and landings. The efficient positioning of the handles and the machine’s light weight make the Gecko Flex easy to operate. Dust-free sanding is possible as a result of the direct connection of the vacuum cleaner, whilst flying dust is countered by the adjustable brush ring around the sanding pad. The GECKO FLEX is equipped with a reliable 1500W FLEX motor and the number of revolutions per minute can be adjusted at any time between 1,400 and 4,200. Another benefit is the completely flat sanding pad, which helps prevent unwanted dents. Two sanding pads are supplied: one disc with two pin keys and one disc with Velcro. Obviously, it is still possible to sandpaper edges in the way in which parquet floor fitters have done it throughout their careers, namely with a traditional edge sander such as the Frank Gecko Star. Today, this

machine is fully up to date and adapted in all areas to the demands of professionals who use such a tool daily.

Bona

The Bona assortment includes the following edge sanders: Bona Combi Edge L, Bona Edge, and Bona Edge XL, which are all easy to connect to the Bona DCS70 so that you can work dust-free. Bona Combi Edge is the most suitable tool for stairs, certainly in view of its light weight and the flexibility of the machine for efficient sandpapering and thanks to the ultimate LED lights on the machine. The sanding arms can be exchanged easily; the 330mm sanding arm has excellent reach under deep staircase steps and is also ideal for under radiators! Specially for stairs, Bona also has the ‘stair support’ which is used to keep the sander perfectly straight on the staircase step. For a manual operation there is the Bona Supra Flex, an all-in-one tool. The Supra Flex can be used perfectly with the Bona Power Drive NEB to enable you to work in places which are difficult to reach. This new Supra Flex has a 1400W motor with an adjustable speed and makes it possible to work ‘silently’. The limited height makes it possible to reach places which are difficult to reach and the M14 tool hold means you can exchange pads and brushes quickly and easily! The Bona Supra Flex is presented in a handy case, which also contains a dust control unit, suction hose, and a Velcro sanding pad. The dust suction unit can be connected to the Bona DCS 70 so that you can work dust-free.

with a 3mm thick layer of felt and rotates at a speed of 3,000 revolutions per minute to achieve smooth sanding results without leaving marks on the floor. Since the machine is sturdily built, it is not necessary to apply pressure whilst working. A simple sliding motion is enough to do the job without damaging surfaces. The Sideboy NS 1750/16 is a particularly effective sander for sandpapering edges and small surfaces. This machine is designed for professionals and provides the necessary power for the toughest of jobs! It is a user-friendly sander with a pressure switch and an optional disposable paper dust bag for safe and handy use and for any job. The motor has four brushes and a permanent self-cooling function, is designed for applying heavy pressure, and will not jam or cut out when it is under pressure whilst grinding with sandpaper with rough grain and removing old surface finishes and wax and dirt deposits. Finally, Devomat presents the Janser Puma, a versatile edge sander with a horizontally designed frame. Therefore, this machine is ideal for sandpapering in places which are difficult to reach e.g. under radiators, under sanitary facilities, in small rooms, under stairs, etc. At Prowood 2018, Devomat Industries launched the new sanders Devo Speed XL 150 and Devo Speed XS 150, two extremely manoeuvrable and lightweight tools, which are available with a long or short lip.

Industrial parquet

INDUSTRIAL PARQUET IS STILL TOP OF THE BILL INDUSTRIAL PARQUET IS THE MOST SOLID OF ALL SOLID PARQUETS bright and varied colours from long and slender strips. If you do that in a tropical wood sort … that’s sheer design!

There’s nothing more solid

Photo – INPA Parket

Industrial parquet (strips on their sides) is still this editor’s top favourite parquet floor. The reason is twofold. Aesthetically, the sharpness of the strips is so charming. Industrial parquet is a slender interplay of thin-looking strips. Obviously, the technical reality is different; their strength lies below. Those thin-looking strips have more solid wood under the visible surface than any other wooden floor. That knowledge breeds confidence in the ‘eternal’ durability of sublime wooden parquet.

44

Solid parquet consists entirely of solid wood. The thickness varies from 6 to 22mm. To make things even clearer, we define solid parquet as ‘parquet consisting of a full solid wood mass’. This means that multi-layer wooden floor structures can ‘never’ be defined as solid and the term ‘semi-solid’ is rather misleading. Some makers defend themselves by pointing out that multi-layer floor underlays also consist of solid wood i.e. the floor consists of wood for the full 100%. That’s obviously nonsense because laminate, too, consists of 100% wood (HDF = wood, paper = wood). It would be fair to consumers if parquet traders would stick to the distinction between ‘solid parquet’ and ‘parquet with a solid wood top layer’. The former then relates to ‘fully solid’ parts and the latter to all the rest.

Solid types of parquet The main types of solid wood floors are wooden floors, strip parquet, mosaic parquet, panels or design floors, cross-cut, and industrial parquet.

A double on its side

Wooden floors

What do you get if you turn a wooden plank with a width of 22mm on its side? Yes, the ‘width’ then becomes the ‘thickness’. That’s exactly what we do with industrial parquet, which is also sometimes called ‘strips on their side’ or ‘end grain blocks’. This type of floor owes the designation industrial parquet to its vast wear resistance and high load capacity. A floor of 10 to 22mm thick without tongue and groove is obviously designed for heavy use and can be sandpapered countless times. Depending on the type of wood and the sorting of the planks, you get

These are solid wood planks usually 20 to 22mm thick. Wooden floors are always mounted on beams. The basic difference between parquet and wooden floors is that wooden floors are self-supporting. That obviously also explains the thickness.

Floor Forum International 99

Strip parquet This brings us to the domain of traditional parquet. The floorboards, which are usually 6 or 9mm thick, are glued and nailed onto a subfloor.

The nail holes are sealed using the sawdust of the wood which is mixed with a filler designed for that purpose.

Mosaic parquet Mosaic parquet consists of strips 6 to 10mm thick, which are combined in accordance with a particular design. The most popular design is the draughtboard, but other designs also include the herringbone, the English bond, the woven pattern, etc. Mosaic panels are glued onto the subfloor and then sandpapered and finished. The subfloor (mosaic subfloor) for strip parquet appears in the form of (oak) mosaic parquet of a lower range.

Panels Inlay parquet floors in pre-assembled panels (e.g. Versailles) or design floors allow for all possible designs. The wooden floorboards are glued sideways to each other and form a design within a square frame which is ready for fitting or glueing. There is a vastly extensive choice of designs.

Cross-cut Whilst traditional parquet boards and wooden plank floors are sawn along the length of the wood grain, cross-cut is sawn across the wood grain. That’s why there is a difference between quarter-sawn and cross-cut wood. The surface of a cross-cut wooden floor is a lively interaction of growth rings and gives a completely different look to that of traditional floorboards.

Industrial parquet as a maverick The designation ‘strips on their sides’ describes this type of floor perfectly. The wooden strips are fitted on their side instead of flat. And so, the narrowest side of the strips eventually forms the floor surface. This yields a highly vivid floor which still stays rigid. And so, the fact that the widest side of the strips forms the height immediately gives you a very thick floor. Industrial parquet comes in various thicknesses (10, 14, or 22mm). And so, it forms a floor which lasts for several generations. After all, the floor can be sandpapered and renovated scores of times. If we were to erode 1mm of a floor each time it were sandpapered (that’s a lot) and we did so every 15 years (that’s a high frequency), we would be three centuries further after sanding the floor twenty times. Whether the home itself can reach that age is obviously another matter. Industrial parquet doesn’t have a tongue and groove. The strips are usually glued directly onto a dry screed, sandpapered, and finished with oil or lacquer. Industrial parquet is often fitted in oak, but also in other wood sorts such as teak and bamboo. Industrial parquet in dark tropical sorts is absolutely gorgeous, but those floors are usually the preserve of the happy few. Solid wood in tropical wood sorts does have the ‘drawback’ of being very expensive.

finish in oil or lacquer, the fitting is obviously somewhat more expensive. Design Parquet does not have industrial parquet which is ready for fitting. The standard sizes are 24 x 8 x 120mm, 14 x 20 x 250mm, 10 x 10 x 250mm, and 20 x 14 x 250mm. The fitting certainly requires expertise on the part of the floor fitter. The most significant asset is the indentation resistance. All types of wood are suitable for this type of parquet, but oak and merbau come out on top.

INPA Parket INPA Parket gets several requests for ‘strips on their sides’ from architects. They, too, told us that the fitting is somewhat more expensive because the floor still has to be sandpapered, filled, and finished in situ and this has to be done by an experienced parquet floor fitter. INPA does not sell ‘strips on their sides’ which are ready for fitting. The customary sizes of the strips are 14 x 22 x 250mm and 22 x 8 x 160mm. The benefits of ‘industrial parquet’ are that it has great strength, is suitable for company floors and high traffic, it can be fitted onto floor heating, and it has a lifespan of 100 years. The floor is also reasonably priced, even if fitting costs are higher. Industrial parquet appears mainly in solid wood. The types of wood include ipe/lapacho, curupau , morado, tarara amarilla, and sirari, all 100% FSC approved.

Vanlandschoot

A coveted design The fact that other types of floor covering have included the design in their range of decors shows that the look of industrial parquet is widely appreciated. ‘Strips on their sides’ as a decor appear in multi-layer parquet, veneer floors, and even in laminate. It wouldn’t surprise us at all if LVT or PVC floors were to emerge with that same much coveted decor.

What’s on the market? Design Parquet This type of parquet floor is extremely popular on the market thanks to its original look, but, of course, also thanks to its solid thickness. Since industrial parquet has to be glued and sandpapered and then given a

Vanlandschoot Hout offers plenty of different variants in multi-layer parquet. These parquet floors consist of birch multiplex with a wooden top layer in oak or a different wood sort. The company offers a wide assortment in diverse designs both in finished and unfinished oak as well as in other types of wood. The thicknesses vary from 10 to 20mm with a top layer of 3 to 6mm. There are also several widths and lengths available, whilst the possibilities for the finish are endless. Industrial parquet and cross-cut are new for 2018-19.

Producers of ecological glue

ECOLOGICAL GLUES? HOW COME? ECOLOGICAL AWARENESS NOW MEANS ECOLOGICAL BEHAVIOUR

Photo – Emfi

Ecological awareness is now finally expressing itself in ecological behaviour! It’s one thing to know you are ill; doing something about it is another matter. We humans sometimes have the nasty habit of waiting until it’s five to midnight when we’re up to our necks in water before calling for help. After lots of distress signals, mankind has seen that there are worrying threats to our planet which we have caused. The fact that awareness is now manifesting itself in attempts to rectify the situation is a good thing. ‘Everything’ is gradually becoming ecological, including glues in the construction sector.

Visit www.floor-forum.com

From awareness to behaviour Almost everyone uses the term ‘ecological’ almost every day in countless situations and for countless applications. And so, it is perhaps helpful to define the concept again. As a science, ecology is a component of biology. Ecology is the study of the dynamics of the interaction between organisms, populations, or communities (biotic environmental factors) and the relations between organisms, populations, communities, or landscapes and the non-biological environment (abiotic environmental factors). The term was introduced by the German biologist Ernst Haeckel in 1866 and is a contraction of the Greek words ‘oikos’ (house) and ‘logos’ (word/knowledge/teaching). In Anglo-Saxon usage, the word ‘ecology’ has a more environmental meaning.

Floor Forum International 99

47

Acting consistently ‘Ecological awareness’ has arisen from the realisation that we are using up our energy sources (fossil fuels) and that over the years we have damaged the air, soil, and water severely by ‘dumping’ waste just about everywhere. The dustbin is full and there’s a need for a new approach. When we use the term ‘ecological’ nowadays, we mean that essential respect for the planet. We show that respect by burdening the environment less with ‘harmful’ substances which take a long time to decompose or are even non-degradable and often defile the planet forever. We show that respect by using energy sources sparingly and giving preference to energy sources which do not pollute. We also show that respect by showing a preference in the production of goods for renewable raw materials i.e. raw materials which we do not exhaust simply by harvesting them.

How big is the ‘footprint’? You have to know how serious the disease is to provide a cure. That is often underestimated. We find a good illustration in a file about the ‘water footprint’ of human beings on the planet. To ascertain that footprint, it is necessary to look beyond the local water consumption of ‘something’ or ‘someone’. For instance, it has been said that for water consumption in Flanders you also need to include the countless hectolitres of water which are necessary for growing the tonnes of asparagus which are imported from Peru. In other words, the ecological footprint covers the source, harvest, transport, processing, use, and possible re-use.

The impact of glue

VISIT US! Hall B6, Stand 423

The fact that the construction sector leaves more than just a few ecological footprints is no surprise at all. The sector consists of scores of subsectors, each with their own weak points and opportunities. Glue plays an important part in various sectors of the construction industry. Indeed, glues are used frequently in everyday life. One of the main weapons for reducing the impact of chemical products on the environment is lowering emission values i.e. the extent to which these products emit volatile organic compounds before and during their production and before and after their use. Some of these substances (e.g. formaldehyde) are known to have potentially harmful effects on human health. Those VOCs can be released from certain varnishes, glues, or finish products.

Emission standards in 3 classes The grading (EC-1, 2, and 3), which we see on product packaging, relates to the Emicodes developed by the Association for the Control of Emissions in Products for Flooring Installation (‘Gemeinschaft Emissionkontrolierte Verlegewerkstoffe’ or ‘GEV’ for short). These codes are now applied to all ‘testable’ floor products. EMICODE is the registered sign of the GEV. It is the designation for a grading system whereby we can divide construction chemicals into the following three classes on the basis of their emission behaviour for the benefit of floor fitters: EMICODE EC 1 means ‘very low emission’, EMICODE EC 2 means ‘low emission’, and EMICODE EC 3 means ‘not low emission’. The EMICODE grading is based on test data and specific grading criteria which are measured according to a specified test method. Since the term ‘very low emission’ is neither standardised nor clearly defined, only the EMICODE system offers a mandatory basis to help floor fitters assess and choose products.

amongst other things that after 28 days the emission level of the total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) all together may not exceed 1,000µg/m³ and the content of the total semi-volatile organic compounds (TSVOC) may not even exceed 100µg/m³. The share of CMR substances from category 1A and 1B may not exceed 1µg/m³. CMR substances are carcinogenic (cancerous), mutagenic (they cause changes in hereditary features), or toxic for reproduction (they are harmful for reproduction or for offspring).

comes into contact with body parts such as skin or eyes. There are producers who, apart from standard packages, offer package concepts which take account of the ecological footprint, such as a bag in a cardboard box instead of a bucket. Buckets are usually made of recycled plastic. Basically, there is a need to consider the entire footprint. Some players do this, but as yet it doesn’t have much support. The Dutch trademark ‘Dubokeur’ is an example of a player which does this. BASF regards as ecological any glues which do not contain solvents, are at least EC1 certified, and do not need safety labels on the packaging. Such glues include all (dispersion) adhesives from the BASF range, apart from the dual-component PU glue.

Blanchon

MS Gold Flex is a mono-component silane glue specially developed for glueing all types of wooden floors onto cement-bound covering floors or non-absorbent existing floors such as marble, ceramic tiles, or wooden surfaces. This mono-component glue is based entirely on MS technology. It ensures extremely high adhesion and durable glueing and contains no isocyanates or amines. Moreover, it also contains no solvents and ensures extremely low VOC emissions.

Thomsit/BASF

The term ‘ecological’ is usually associated with products and techniques based on ‘natural’ raw materials which respect public health and the environment. Professionals or crafts people can choose such products to the extent that they also perform satisfactorily. In the world of wood glues there are various products based on natural raw materials (natural latex, casein, skin, nerves, or marrow). Nevertheless, it must be said that significant claims have been made within the chemical sector for glueing parquet. The so called safety data sheet gives users some guidance on ingredients. The most important information relates to VOC emissions. It goes without saying that the packaging and, in fact, the entire ‘impression’ should be taken into account. In this context Blanchon presents its hybrid polymers AB 1300 (classic glueing up to 130mm wide) and AB 2000 (up to 200 mm). These products are sold in pliable aluminium 2kg bags, which are packed in cardboard in twos.

Bona

BASF defines an ecological glue as a glue which is not harmful to the user’s health and has only a minimal impact on the environment. Belgium has its own VOC legislation, but apart from that it is not so much legislation as directives such as EC1 and the Blue Angel (‘Blauwe Engel’) quality label which consider the user’s health. The safety label indicates the risks of working with a particular product and directives indicate how to use the product (e.g. wearing gloves or safety goggles). It also indicates how to respond if the product

According to Bona, dispersion glues are generally regarded as the most ecological glues because they consist mainly of PVAC, water, and natural fillers. Bona itself believes most silane glues should also be regarded as ecological. Bona silane glues have extremely low VOC emissions and are EMICODE EC1-R Plus with the Greenguard or DIBt labels. In the area of legislation they also refer here to REACH, the Emicodes, and the German DIBt. The safety label is important because the user is thereby aware of possible risks and therefore knows what measures he or she should take. Obviously, the packaging is important in assessing the impact on the environment. Anyway, at Bona they believe that the entire footprint of a product should be considered e.g. transport plays a major part. At Bona they promote as ecological glues the dispersion glue Bona D720 and the silane glue Bona Titan.

Since the new Royal Decree regarding maximum emission values for all floor coverings and floor covering glues came into force in Belgium, all glues are ‘ecological’ to some degree to the extent that the emission values measured after 28 days must be below strict maximum limits for an extensive list of volatile organic compounds (VOC's). The number one ecological glue in the Bostik range is PARFIX ECO PLUS, an innovative and elastic parquet glue with excellent cross-linking and rapid setting. The glue contains no softeners, no reactive accelerators, and no phthalates. Green Contact (contact glue for flexible floors), which contains no solvents or phthalates, is a contact glue for skirting boards in PVC, raised skirting boards, profiles, stair nosing, pre-formed staircase steps, and floor coverings (PVC, cork, and rubber in lanes or tiles) on stairs and such like. Bostik Rolls (dry glues in a roll) is a special reinforced adhesive tape for specific applications, namely the renovation of floors, skirting boards, pre-formed staircase steps, shower systems in PVC, and such like. These tapes are an ecological alternative to traditional glues, they are lighter in weight, and produce less waste. Bostik Rolls contain no solvents or phthalates, they comply with the very low VOC emissions of classes A+ and EC1, and can be used for LEED and BREEAM projects.

Emfi Parquet has both PU and hybrid glues in its range. Emfi designates as ecological glues with no solvents or isocyanates and classified as A+ and EC13+, including glues based on hybrid polymers. Apart from the emission standards, EMFI also refers in this context to the REACH legislation, which, amongst other things, regulates the maximum use of chemical products. Amongst others, Emfi presents as an ecological glue Emfi Parquet Pro+, a parquet glue based on silanated polymers which is suitable for glueing fully all types of parquet. Thanks to a lot of research and development, Emfi Parquet Pro+ meets the strictest environmental standards. It contains no solvents, no silicones, and no isocyanates. This glue is suitable for glueing very wide oak floorboards. It sticks rapidly and is easy to apply. Emfi Parquet Pro+ is a mono-component glue. Furthermore, Emfi also presents Pro Eco and Emfimastic PS Parquet.

Whether a glue is ecological or not depends on various factors. Firstly, a glue can be ecological because it is not harmful to the user (floor fitter) or the people who live or work afterwards in that home/ company/public building. Secondly, a parquet glue can be ecological because it is developed consciously with ecologically responsible raw materials. Rubio® EasyBond parquet glue is ecological for

various reasons. One of those reasons is the fact that Rubio® EasyBond contains no softeners. Softeners are oily fluids which are added to synthetics to make them more flexible. Rubio® EasyBond parquet glue contains no softeners, but has a high polymer content, something which makes the glue more expensive, but also more durable with greater adhesive strength. Since Rubio® EasyBond doesn’t contain any softeners, there is therefore also no migration so that the composition of the glue doesn’t change. This means there’s no need to fear any damage to the finish layer afterwards because there simply isn’t anything in the glue to migrate to the wood. Softeners have been under pressure for over 20 years due to supposed adverse effects on the environment and public health. The glue is solventless, so it is not harmful to the environment. It meets all recognised standards and tests, including the ‘latest’ standard ISO 17178, which defines the minimum requirements of a glue. It is a mono-component glue, so there is no waste and the buckets can be used again.

LEVELLING THE SUBSTRATE IS ‘ALMOST ALWAYS’ NECESSARY WITH THIN FLOORS THE NEED MIGHT BE EVEN GREATER renovation. Measuring damp is one thing, but other features need to be inspected as well. For instance, a level subfloor is essential for a good fitting. That, too, has to be inspected, both with new construction and renovation.

Rectification through levelling Floors are levelled with products which might or might not be ready for use and which are designed to make covering floors and other substrates suitable for a floor covering. According to the BBRI, the primary role of this operation is to rectify surface flaws in the substrate, improve smoothness, and ensure a solid, healthy, and dust-free surface for fitting the covering. In other words, you rectify in the subfloor what the floor covering itself is unable to rectify. In view of their limited thickness, flexible floor coverings such as cork and PVC strips do not allow any significant rectification of the imperfections in the substrate. The tolerances on the finished work are therefore largely determined by the tolerances in the substrate.

Visual inspection

Photo – Pallmann

This is one of those hidden operations and hidden costs which remain unnoticed even by the project manager at the end. Or is that really the case? Let’s assume so. You might not see the fruit of levelling a substrate, but in many cases you will certainly see the effects if you don’t do it! The slightest irregularities in the substrate are visible in the finished floor or even become greater, certainly with thin and flexible floor coverings. Let’s be honest. If you fit a 15cm thick oak plank over a 5mm crack in an otherwise healthy screed, you probably won’t notice any ill effects. However, it’s a completely different story with vinyl or cork.

Don’t be misled! ‘Rectify it and inspect it’ is the message! Or should we say, ‘Inspect it, rectify it, and inspect it again’? You can be the best professional in the world, work with the highest quality floors, and use the best glues and finish products, but if the substrate isn’t right, your work will be in vain. The covering floor, whether it be a cement screed or an anhydrite subfloor, lays the foundation for the end floor. The quality of that covering floor largely determines the end result. And so, the screed deserves the necessary attention, both with new construction and

52

Floor Forum International 99

Don’t be misled! The look of such finishes should not be assessed against the light or in distorted light. The work should always be done in daylight with the naked eye looking onto the surface to be inspected from at least 1.5m away for floor coverings. Even the strictest flatness tolerances can still be too wide for certain (e.g. high-gloss) coverings and/or under specific conditions (e.g. with indirect light). Even if you apply a levelling layer before fitting an elastic floor covering in order to rectify the specific surface flaws, it is not impossible (e.g. with distorted light through big windows) that under certain conditions even the smallest imperfections remain visible (source: BBRI).

Points for attention Levelling agent drying times vary from brand to brand, but they do all have one thing in common: They dry rapidly. The rapid drying and the fluidity mean that it is best not to apply too much at once and certainly no more than what you can process in 15 to 20 minutes. The various surfaces can be walked on after the fitting between one and three hours later, but this varies. The time which is necessary to glue on top of the levelling agent varies from 2 to 30 hours. That is also usually the time necessary for applying a second layer of levelling agent if you have to work away a greater difference in level. Most levellers have a filling capacity of 1-10mm per layer. If several layers are applied, it is sometimes necessary with some brands to sprinkle quartz sand between the layers. Moreover, the conditions in which these products may be used also vary between the different brands, but here, too, we see strong similarities. The temperature limits within which the leveller may be applied lie usually between 5 and 30°C. It is not advisable to use the products outside those limits. The substrate temperature has to be at least 5°C. Humidity of 65% is ideal. The screed itself may contain a maximum residual damp percentage of 2 to 2.5% and for anhydrite floors that percentage is at 0.5%.

A selection from the range Adesiv

pressure on the floor afterwards rather than the type of floor covering. The application also plays a part: fibre-reinforced for levelling wooden substrates, fast-drying if the job has to be finished the same day, and increased compressive strength if used as a top coat. Whether or not you can glue depends on the type of leveller and the type of floor covering. As standard it is possible to glue onto a levelling agent in thicknesses of up to a maximum of 10mm the day after (after sanding). With fast-drying levellers it is possible the same day, but that applies only to carpet or PVC. For parquet and linoleum we also advise waiting 24 hours before glueing on top of fast-drying levellers. The maximum thickness can be obtained with Niboplan DE from Bostik (4cm with a drying time of 1 day/cm of thickness. The best-selling product here is the Niboplan DIRECT, a C 50 - F 10 leveller (compressive strength> 50 N/mm² and can therefore cope with extremely high pressure afterwards). This product can be deployed as an industrial floor (top coat).

Bona Adesiv recommends the cement-based levelling agent Pavilast R for levelling uneven floors. This is done in accordance with the following fitting instructions. Always check the dampness of the bottom layer using the right tools. The bottom layer should not contain any damp, must be compact, and must be free of any loose particles such as plaster, dust, oils, or wax. Pour the powder (25kg) into the water (6.5kg), which is at room temperature, in a clean bucket and mix the compound using the electric mixer until you get a uniform paste of spreadable thickness with no lumps. The resulting paste should be left for a few minutes before it is applied using the correct, smooth, and rustproof spatula (American). Before applying the paste, always check the dampness of the covering floor, which should be <2% (<0.5% for anhydrite). The room temperature should be between 15 and 25°C, whilst the humidity should not exceed 75%. Furthermore, Adesiv also presents Adecem Fibre, a self-levelling and fibre-reinforced leveller.

Bostik

The main reason for levelling a subfloor is to obtain a sufficiently flat substrate. Furthermore, the screed has to meet at least the following criteria: permanently dry (with no danger of rising damp), clean, free of cracks, and sufficient compressive strength and tensile strength. The choice of the type of leveller depends mainly on the substrate and the

If a floor does not meet the requirements which are set for that particular floor in terms of evenness and smoothness, it has to be levelled. That can vary for each type of floor. This is less critical for traditional parquet, but for PVC it is crucial. If a screed is too sandy and the application of a primer doesn’t yield any improvement, the only realistic option is a new screed. Furthermore, the screed obviously has to be dry. Otherwise, a damp screen will be necessary first. There is a difference between levellers used, for instance, for carpet and/or floating parquet floors and levellers used for parquet. Wood is a dynamic material and causes more pressure on the leveller. And so, the leveller must have greater tensile strength. Bona levelling agents are obviously suitable for glueing wooden floors. Bona has levelling agents based on cement and gypsum. Generally speaking, it is possible to fit a surface over the levellers after 24 hours. For a cement-bound leveller the drying time is 24 hours for thicknesses of up to 10mm, but anything thicker than that will need at least 72 hours to dry. For a gypsum-bound leveller the drying time is 24 hours for a thickness of 3mm. Each millimetre of extra thickness raises the drying time by 24 hours. The best-selling product at Bona is the H600, a universal levelling agent for fitting both parquet and elastic floors.

Pallmann There are lots of reasons for levelling a subfloor before fitting a floor. It can be necessary for the quality of the subfloor or, for instance, to compensate for differences in height and obtain greater smoothness or other technical features. The type of levelling agent depends on the covering floor material and the type of floor. For example, levelling agents can be based on cement or gypsum, for instance. In many cases a primer will be necessary as an intermediate step or, for instance, to obtain a consistent porosity. The self-levelling leveller from Pallmann is the Pallmann P25.

Rubio Monocoat RUBIO® EASY FLOW (-F) LEVELLERS

From the preparation of the substrate to the parquet finish, you don’t need to worry about anything. You can do it all with Rubio Monocoat.

Stauf If the substrate isn’t smooth enough to glue a floor onto it, it will have to be levelled first with a levelling agent. The absorption capacity of the substrate also has to correspond to the glue. Sometimes it is necessary to replace the substrate. A substrate can shrink as it starts to set. If the layer shrinks too strongly, the substrate can break under pressure so that it has to be replaced. Furthermore, if the ratio of cement/filler is too small, the substrate can be extremely weak with large pores and low stability. An old and broken substrate is a third problem which can render it necessary to renew the substrate. Levelling agents can vary widely due to their use. An agent which has to be used under PVC or LVT has to be much more pliable than a levelling agent used under parquet. On the other hand, it is also true that parquet puts more pressure on the levelling agent, so the levelling agent for parquet has to be a lot stronger than that for elastic floors. In making a choice, it is always necessary to know the time schedule and the method of use. According to Stauf, a primer is always necessary. A primer is necessary to determine the absorption capacity of the substrate, bind dust, and ensure good adhesion. Sometimes a primer is also necessary as a moisture-tight membrane. Furthermore, for the glueing it is always necessary to wait until the levelling agent is dry. Otherwise you get moisture damage. A spokesperson from Stauf comments: ‘There isn’t a best-seller because the product always depends on the type of floor.’

Rubio® EasyFlow levellers are universal in use and are the ideal preparation for fitting parquet and other types of hard and soft flooring. A primer should always be applied first, but, after that, levellers can be deployed on all absorbent (mineral) substrates such as cement-bound and anhydrite covering floors (screed), but also on non-absorbent substrates such as ceramic tiles. Rubio® EasyFlow levellers should be applied to a well prepared subfloor which is free of dust and grease. Rubio® Easy Flow leveller is available in two versions: Rubio® EasyFlow for levelling from 3 to 15mm and Rubio® EasyFlow-F for levelling up to 30mm and for floors with floor heating. Rubio® EasyFlow levellers stand out for their easy and smooth mixing and uniform results. Moreover, they need less water than traditional levellers, so they also set faster. Once the floor is levelled with Rubio® EasyFlow(-F), it is ready to be furnished as required with tiles, laminate, carpet, or, obviously, parquet. Apart from Rubio® EasyFlow (-F) levellers, there is a complete Rubio® EasyBond range with a universal parquet glue, primers, and tools for preparing the substrate.

In its range for substrate preparation in interior, Tover offers a highly advantageous self-leveling compound: Rockfloor F10. Its main features are long leveling time, thickness of application - up to 10 mm by coat - and the possibility to lay the wood floor after only 24 hours. Fiber-reinforced, it is particularly strong and its rough surface improves the adhesion of glues. Rockfloor F10 is perfectly suitable for underfloor heating. In order to improve the adhesion between the sub-floor to be leveled and the self-leveling compound we recommend applying the adhesion promoter Primer C4.

A SMALL COUNTRY WITH BIG PLAYERS BELGIUM HOLDS ITS OWN ON THE WORLD STAGE Belgium might be a relatively small country for parquet and wooden flooring, but it’s a completely different story when it comes to many other floors. Globalisation means it isn’t always easy to determine a company’s origin, but one thing’s for sure: Most of the buzzing trademarks of the top world laminate players have origins in Belgium. The same goes for flexible floors and, not least, textiles where one of the world’s biggest groups originates from West Flanders. In the fields of accessories and chemical products for fitting, too, Belgium houses several globally active players.

The minefield holds up What is it that makes Belgium so special? Everything, surely? No other country in the world has such a complex structure as that tiny triangle on the North Sea. Moreover, those features and peculiarities found expression in the beginning. Let’s be honest! Countries arise out of history, developments, migrations, and a sense of unity. Countries are the result of an unspoken desire by people who feel related to each other in order to establish themselves together and continue to exist under one joint flag. That’s how countries come into being. However, Belgium did not come into being; Belgium was created. It was installed. Once upon a time, long ago, there were some prominent rulers. They sat down together at a round table with a map of Europe. With three brief and simple strokes of a pen, they drew a triangle. Belgium was a fact!

The art of living together The people who had to inhabit the newly created country had nothing in common with each other. They came from three different points of the compass, they spoke three different languages, and they each had their own history. Three sorts of Gauls and Germans in one playground. A little Visigothic; a touch of Saxon; and features of the Franks. The Belgian is a fact. Nevertheless, in almost 200 years together, those people have managed to develop as one ‘country’. It was a risk to let three different characters play together in one garden. Things have turned out differently in Belgium. A new race has developed which, reinforced by differences of opinion and cultural differences, has learnt to negotiate. Belgians are born ‘negotiators’.

The seeds of Europe Several international and European institutions are based in Belgium, especially in Brussels, and that is a direct result of the country’s individuality. It all starts here. A country which already consisted of three distinct ‘races’ felt called to work together with even more others. The Benelux has seen the light of day. First, there was the ECSC, then the Euromarket, and today there is the European Union, which even has its own currency. Nevertheless, within that ever growing entity called the ‘EU’, Belgium continues to be just as complex: four governments, just as many regions, three areas, three language communities, a whole series of parliaments, and nine provincial governors.

A review of the economy With ups and downs From 1960 to 1974, Belgium enjoyed a period of economic growth which averaged 4.9% per annum. In the recession from 1974 to 1988, there was talk of slow growth or even for a few years (1975 and 1981) a shrinking of gross national product (GDP). Average economic growth during that period was only 1.7% per annum. Moreover, economic conditions since 1974 have been characterised by high inflation, high unemployment, falling public finances, and a fluctuating figure on the balance of payments. Another big factor has been an ongoing rise in government spending between 1960 and 1981. The growth of the government sector has slowed down since 1981 under the influence of public finance difficulties. For both employment and added value, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and manufacturing and processing industries have clearly lost their significance as compared to service activities. Significant growth has been recorded, for instance, in the financial sector.

Flanders versus Wallonia The increasing prosperity in the various regions has not come about evenly at all. For instance, if we look at turnover, the Flemish urban areas or city regions have a business and economic dynamism which is five times greater than in Wallonia; investments in Flanders are four times greater. Average income per head of population also varies greatly; average income in Flanders is one of the highest in Europe, whilst in Wallonia the figure is below the European average. The region of Brussels retains its strong position. Geographical shifts have also been significant. The Flemish Region has enjoyed the biggest expansion and has also been less affected by the economic recession. The provinces with significant employment in heavy industry (Hainaut and Liege) have suffered the greatest difficulties.

The euro as a ‘turning point’ Government finances were in balance in 2000 for the first time in fifty years. A reduction of national debt has been on the political agenda for years. Facing pressure to meet the demands for admission to the European Monitory Union, Belgium managed to reduce its deficits. The budget deficit in 2017 was 1.5% and national debt was 104 % of GDP. Growth in gross domestic product was 1.7% in 2017.

Economic indicators today The National Bank of Belgium publishes economic forecasts for Belgium twice a year. The prospects are established within the framework of joint forecasts for the euro system and are based on technical hypotheses and international projections formulated jointly by the ECB and the central banks within the euro zone. The most recent forecasts for Belgium, published on 15 June 2018, were concluded on 31 May 2018. The corresponding results for the euro zone are published in the Economic Bulletin of the ECB.

Trade activity this year is expected to increase by 1.5% and slow down somewhat to a growth rate of 1.4% by 2020. With the inclusion of 2018, it is expected that about 97,000 extra jobs will be created (in cumulative terms). However, the level of unemployment should stay more or less stable at 6.7 %. Inflation is expected to be 2.1% in 2018, and that is largely related to the course of energy prices; it should then fall to 1.6 %. The government deficit is estimated at 1.0% GDP for 2018, but this is expected to rise to 1.8% GDP by the end of the forecast period.

What about wood and wooden floors? The total surface area of forests in Flanders is 146,381 hectares and 22,135 hectares of park are managed by towns and local authorities. The Ardennes has an extended area of natural beauty because that area is much less densely populated than in Flanders. One third of the surface area of Wallonia is covered by forests and that surface is increasing. However, a large part of that forest consists of pine forests which have little natural value. One of the biggest areas of natural beauty in Belgium is the Hautes Fagnes.

Parquet and wooden floors Belgians are growing increasingly fond of wooden floors. On a European scale the Belgians are not great producers of wooden floors, but consumption is relatively high. As the smallest parquet country in Europe in 2012, Belgium accounted for 0.66% of the total production. And so, during that year, 466,705.80 m² of parquet were produced in Belgium. Whilst the European production volume has fallen, the Belgian share has risen, and the country has increased its number of square metres produced. However, Belgium is still the smallest producer, followed by Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Hungary. By contrast, the number of consumers who opt for parquet has risen. Belgium accounts for 3.59% of European consumption and thereby consumes more than Rumania, Hungary, Czech Republic, and the Netherlands. In 2012, consumption in the FEP countries fell by no less than 5.88 % to run around on 87,509,000 m². The Belgian share of total consumption has continued to rise to 3.63 %, but real consumption fell from 3,328,952 m² to 3,176,576 m².

BJ PARKET

BJ Parket is a manufacturer of traditional and engineered parquet and a wholesaler in parquet products. The company was formed in 1988. ARBONY The company Arbony has over 25 years of experience and is the undisputed specialist in wooden floors and distressed parquet. Their methods of distressing and colouring have often been copied or imitated, but never equalled. Indeed, their patinas offer an incomparable authenticity and further magnify all the beauty and history of oak in a subtle manner. The company takes care of the entire production process in its own workshops, from the very start to the final destination. Nothing is outsourced, so they guarantee full control and immaculate quality for their ranges of both solid and multi-layer parquet. Their wooden and parquet floors are used in highly prestigious and reputable projects all over the world. Scores of big names from the world of architecture purchase their products for use with their projects and, obviously, Arbony is very proud of that. All their processes are natural and based on the specific reactivity of tannic acid in oak. They give their wood a look which normally only the weather and the ravages of time can offer. VANLANDSCHOOT HOUT The family business Vanlandschoot was originally a saw mill. The first generation, Henri Vanlandschoot (born in 1874), worked as a stoker in the ‘Houtekier en Cie’ saw mill. Around 1935, he set up a timber trade in Wingene and his son Marcel (born in 1906) took over the business. As a timber trader, he specialised in making interior doors and block panels. In 1974, son Geert Vanlandschoot took over the business and he specialised in making customised panels for the furniture industry. The Belgian furniture industry enjoyed a golden age in the 1970s and ‘80s. In 2001, the private limited company Vanlandschoot Hout BVBA was formed under the management of sons Kurt and Tom. The growing demand for customised work amongst carpenters led to a shift in the production. Veneer customised work was then on a smaller scale and the production of standard panels grew year by year. In 2010, the company started to produce multi-layer parquet floors on a limited scale. Nowadays, however, multi-layer parquet production is the company’s core business. Vanlandschoot now employs 21 people and turnover in 2017 was 10 million euros. The annual capacity in parquet is 400,000m² and for veneer this is 150,000m². +32 (0) 51 65 61 23 - www.vanlandschoot.com

CSP ENGINEERING Since 2014, CSP Engineering focusses on exports within the European Union, thanks to the development of PAR Filler®, the highly innovative machine which automatically fills knots and cracks in parquet floors. The possibilities of the PAR Filler® are used optimally as from a certain production capacity and therefore it was a necessity for the company to look beyond the Benelux. Quote of Jan Peeters, General Manager of CSP Engineering says: 'We target medium and large producers of wooden floorboards and their number is limited in the Benelux, so we had to expand within the EU.' This has not done the company any harm. In just three years, CSP Engineering has almost tripled its staff. PAR-Filler® has been installed in numerous EU-countries such as: Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Portugal, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Lithuania. As a specialist in automatization for the parquet sector, CSP Engineering, next to PAR Filler® also developed the PAR Duo®, a machine for bonding 2 layer parquet with perfect adhesion. The Belgian company based in Dessel also offers various solutions for packing and stacking parquet completely automatically without intervention of an operator. UNILIN Unilin was formed 1960 by various families from West Flanders (B) who were active in the flax processing industry. They joined forces and started producing flax panels. In the 1970s, UNILIN started to use wood as a raw material, and that led to the production of wooden chipboards. In 1990, they introduced the Quick-Step brand. This was the first brand of laminate floors on the Belgian market. UNILIN flooring division produces laminate, multi-layer parquet, and luxury vinyl planks and tiles. Consolidated turnover of UNILIN (flooring division, insulation, and panels) in 2017 was 1.55 billion euros. In March 2018, UNILIN flooring division employed 2642 people worldwide. Annual capacity of laminate, multi-layer parquet, and luxury vinyl planks and tiles is about 47 million square metres. In 2019, UNILIN is launching the Ready Fit & Rigid installation service for vinyl floors. Ready Fit offers a pioneering high-tech solution whereby floor fitting will be completely different in the future. Each room is measured precisely using a 3D scanner. On the basis of those measuring results, the fitter then receives a neatly packed full set of carefully pre-cut planks and a personalised layout plan. The numbered planks are easy to click together by following the layout plan strictly. Rigid Vinyl floors from Quick-Step offer a solution for dents which are often a result of unevenness in the substrate with traditional vinyl floors. Rigid Vinyl floor covering from Quick-Step combines a solid composite core with a resilient surface. The Rigid Vinyl floor is equipped with a high-quality, durable, and watertight surface layer which provides protection against scratches, stains, worn patches, odours, and gloss. Finally, UNILIN has introduced a new and unique innovation on its lacquered parquet floors, namely the Surface & Edge Protect+ technology. +32 (0) 56 67 52 11 - www.unilin.com

SOUDAL

Soudal started in 1966 as a welding company specialising in car bodywork repairs. The company has come a long way in transforming itself into a family multinational specialising in chemical solutions for the building industry; one word pervades the transformation: innovation. ‘If you leave everything as it is, nothing will change.’ That was the guiding principle of founder Vic Swerts when Soudal was formed in 1966 and that is still the case now. The Soudal Group is now Europe’s biggest independent producer of putty, glues, and PU foams for both professional and private users. With its own trademarks, the Soudal Group focuses on three market segments, namely construction, industry, and retail. Soudal has progressed from an annual turnover of a handful of francs in 1966 to 755 million euros in 2017. That figure represented a 12.7% increase in turnover as compared to 2016. Soudal presently employs about 3000 people, about one third of whom work at the headquarters in Turnhout. Vic Swerts comments: ‘You have to surround yourself with good and capable people who can do things better and know more than you do.’ The group’s annual capacity (in m²/l/kg) is 100,000,000 foam cans, 250,000,000 ducts, 10,000,000 tubes, and 100,000,000kg of silicones and glues. A major recent step has been the purchase of 4.3 hectare company premises from the former Sunnyland in Everdongenlaan, which was completed officially in February 2018. From 2019 onwards, work will start on the construction of a brand new production hall. Soudal already operates globally with no fewer than 44 sales offices and 19 production plants and Soudal exports its products to over 130 countries. Soudal is still a 100% Belgian family business. +32 (0) 14 42 42 31 - www.soudal.com ADVERT415_Premium_LVT_A5_ENG.pdf 1 12/12/17 09:25

∂ Industry news GFA President Gottskalksson: ‘These are challenging times’ Upbeat GFA warns of too much optimism During the recent Summer Meeting in Helsinki (Finland) the Global Flooring Alliance (GFA) discussed the latest developments within the flooring trade. At the meeting almost all members were in an upbeat mood. Their respective economies are nearly all doing well, which has resulted in a growth of sales and a positive forecast for 2019. Nonetheless, the GFA members are quick to dampen too much optimism, referring to the various political developments that may affect their respective economies, such as the outcome of Brexit or the ‘trade war’ between the US and China. In order to be well prepared, the GFA has decided to make an inventory of and do a statistical research on the flooring market as a whole and/or specific segments like textile, carpet(tile), lvt. Mr. Einar Gottskalksson, President of GFA: “The Board and members of GFA will closely monitor the developments and consequences of the trade war on tariffs between the US and China. Several manufacturers and suppliers of flooring products have already increased their prices. But not only tariffs are responsible for these price increases. The costs of raw materials combined with the costs of transport and energy have also put upward pressure on prices.” “These are challenging times. On the one hand we have to cope with price increases because of the ‘US-China tariffs trade war’, rising costs of raw materials, transport and energy, and on the other hand we notice markets changing and the trends within. We therefore decided in Helsinki to make an inventory of the existing data regarding flooring and if necessary to invest in our own research.” Next year, the Global Flooring Alliance will celebrate its 30th anniversary. In the context of this anniversary, GFA has introduced already a number of changes in both content and appearance. With a new Code of Ethics, GFA sets out the core principles by which each member must act. Its goal is to maintain the highest of standards within our trade. Furthermore, the introduction of the new logo gives GFA a professional and modern look. The Code of Ethics and the new logo were well picked up and well-received by the trade. GFA membership is open to one parquet importer/distributor per country to avoid conflicting national interests. GFA organizes two meetings per year. One at the Domotex trade fair in Hanover and one in the country of one of the members. The aims of the association are to promote hard surface flooring products in general and to exchange product, market and technical information in the broadest sense. The members also give each other mutual assistance in strategic purchasing opportunities. The next meeting of the Global Flooring Alliance will be on Sunday January 13th 2019 during the Domotex fair in Hanover, Germany. More information can be acquired via the website www.globalflooringalliance. com.

Janser Our aim was to offer a powerful grinding machine to be used for the preparation of subfloors which is also lightweight and easy to transport. Many of our customers are regularly working in multi storey buildings with no lift. Often installers are working on their own on building sites and have no opportunity to transport heavy machinery to the top floors. We are delighted to be able to present our COLIBRI Grinding machine:

Visit www.floor-forum.com

We would like to keep this machine deliberately simple and offer only 2 sanding discs. The aggressive PCD-tipped sanding disc “Piranha pink” and a diamond-tipped “Universal sanding disc, green”. Technical data: mains supply: 230V power input: 2,2 kW rotational speed: 2.600 rpm weight: 35 kg working width: 300mm Extractor hose connections suitable for 50mm and 76mm connectors, as Multi-Vac Y-adapter. Attached to this ENL you will find a product brochure with further information about the machine. This machine is of interest to all our customers who are looking for a lightweight and easy to handle machine which can be used universally in the area of subfloor preparation. The COLIBRI can easily be carried by one person. Without sanding disc it merely weighs 35kg. The handle which can easily be folded makes the machine very flexible when transported. In order to achieve good sanding results despite the low weight of the machine we defined the rotational speed at 2.600 rpm and an engine with a torque of 43Nm. This means the machine rotates very fast but with its intelligent handle it can be very easily and steadily operated. To increase the sanding results an additional weight can be attached. No tools are needed to change the sanding discs. We developed a quick release mechanism which closes automatically and can be opened manually. No risk of malpositioning the quick release mechanism. Furthermore the disc base of the machine is equipped with small magnets which hold the sanding discs in position, even without the quick release mechanism. A very useful detail during assembly of the sanding discs. The machine has a high sanding capacity. It is important to connect a suitable industrial vacuum cleaner. We recommend at least our JANVAC 1600-H-Power. The level of the machine can be adjusted at the back of the machine using a locking mechanism. For optimum adjustment we have installed a water level on the casing of the machine. The aggressivity of the machine can thus be further adjusted. Currently there is no other machine on the market which offers comparable performance detail at such low machine weight. The COLIBRI is especially constructed for the treatment of rough subfloors. With the COLIBRI we would like to open up a different market segment: COLIBRI customers are users who need a light and easy to handle machine which is powerful enough to remove and sand adhesive and levelling compound.
