Never underestimate the power of good lighting. Day or night, one thing that can truly make your outdoor space feel cozy and inviting is the perfect amount of light and style. When it comes to outdoor areas, lighting can be bright and functional, deep and moody, or a combination of both.

CREATE THE MOOD WITH LIGHTING
For brighter lights, think sconces, large lanterns, and solar landscape lights that fit into your design. These fixtures provide more light during times of darkness and can light up walkway paths. For a warmer nighttime atmosphere, consider hanging string lights, mounting tiki torches onto railways, investing in large candles, or a combination of lighting options.
Whether it’s a stunning built-in fireplace or a vaulted patio ceiling, adding a focal point to your outdoor area will heighten the design in a simple but effective way. And, with a main point of focus, you can design the rest of your space around the colors, shapes, and textures that complement that element. Try creating a focal point by emphasizing one specific part of the design. It doesn’t have to be

a permanent part of your design to be the main feature. But it does have to draw attention, so be sure to keep other areas of the design simple. Some ideas include beadboard ceilings, outdoor chandeliers, or bright accent furniture. Other ideas include wood-fired pizza ovens, fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, and custom stonework.

Contrary to popular belief, an outdoor space should be just as comfortable as your indoor space. Otherwise, you probably won’t find yourself spending much time using it. To make your outdoor design comfy, choose cozy seating like outdoor sofas and conversation sets that can be rearranged in several ways, and be sure to choose the right size for your space.

If you don’t have space for an outdoor sectional or you want additional seating, think Adirondack chairs, rattan furniture, or any other chair that offers a comfortable seat. For added comfort, add trendy seat cushions that further increase the cozy look and feel of the outdoor design.

While outdoor areas can incorporate a variety of flooring types, like concrete, pavers, stone, decking, grass, or other options, it’s important to think about your space, what you want out of it, and what purpose it serves your home. If you’re looking for cool and comfortable, consider adding an area rug. Outdoor area rugs not only spice up the look and feel, but they can also define spaces and keep specific areas cool. For example, an outdoor rug under a dining table is a chic way to spruce up the dining area, but an outdoor rug underneath a few chairs will leave space for everyone to take off their shoes and enjoy the outdoors without burning their feet. Plus, if you have dogs, a rug gives them a place to lie without burning their paw pads. Outdoor tile is another example of flooring that can alter the atmosphere of your space. Not only is tile durable enough to handle weather like rain, it is also a permanent way to define your outdoor recreation space. Also, there are tons of outdoor tile designs available, and some outdoor tiles can even be installed on walls for an added design element.

This tip is all about the details that are typically overlooked. While they may not seem like they make much of a difference, we promise they do! Empty outdoor dining tables beg for polished glassware and dinnerware, candles, and accessories that complete the look. Add a festive tablecloth, bright place mats, or a floral table runner to make the dining area feel chic and composed. Linens are just the beginning; try adding other décor details on side tables or coffee tables, like coasters, candles, and vases, to truly make your outdoor space feel well designed.

Tall potted greenery and flowers, small trees, and herb gardens feel natural, beautiful, and decorative. When designing an outdoor space that checks all the boxes, don’t forget to merge the outdoors with the indoors by using natural greenery. This small addition not only looks amazing, but it also attracts gorgeous butterflies to your space and makes it feel a bit more whimsical. Think: outdoor statement pots that can house medium-sized shrubs or trees surrounded by budding flowers. If you don’t have a footprint large enough for large pots, consider window box planters or small rectangular planters that can be hung. Plant boxes not an option? Try investing in an outdoor hanging planter that you can place or mount wherever you please. No matter what type of planter you choose, the greenery and beauty of the natural world will be sure to upgrade your outdoor space!

MINT+CHARCOAL OR CONCRETE LOOK There’s something about the soft, light, and perfectly pastel mint green color that allows so many personalized design styles to radiate beauty, nostalgia, and alluring appeal. As an accent color, it’s undeniably vintage, chic, and dazzling, and it’s becoming ever more popular! While mint has come and gone several times in the world of design trends, there’s no reason to fear its use today—it’s a pastel color that continuously delights interior designs and proves a top contender for a charming look inside any room. It has a way of bringing a delicate sense of grace to any style, and, when displayed among harsher, rougher materials, it tones down the rugged feel and evokes a tenderness unmatched by other colors and combinations. When used as a backsplash, it glows as a secondary accent color to otherwise simple designs. One undoubtedly stunning color combo is mint and deep gray. The genuine navy color is generally considered a neutral when it comes to interior design. A POP OF BLACK+WHITE Black and white is the simple monochrome color combo that seems to creep its way back into fashion and interior design year after year. While black and white may be considered more as shades than colors in many respects, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be included in your home design as a pop of something uniquely stunning and eye-catching. In this color combination, there’s ultimately no wrong way to achieve a black-and-white look when using backsplash tile and flooring. Typically, a white backsplash will reflect more light in your space, which means that it could make the room look larger, especially when paired with other white elements, such as cabinets. A black backsplash, on the other hand, will intensify and warm the design with its deep, dark look. Either option is ideal, depending on your design goals, and each can be mixed and matched with black-andwhite tile flooring. Mixing a white backsplash with black tile flooring adds contrast and distinction to the design that makes it feel cool and collected and leaves the opportunity to warm up the room with décor, linens, and other nonpermanent elements. A
Our Urban to Suburban project was a new build home that we designed from the preliminary layout right down to the accessories. We worked with these clients on their last home located in the middle of Montreal, so when they decided to build a new home in the suburbs, they consulted with us before even confirming the lot.

What were the needs of your client?
A
Our clients wanted to build their dream home that checked all their boxes for both their current and future needs ahead. Our mandate was to create a home that flowed well with ample space for entertaining that maximized the natural light within their home. The property is in the suburbs, surrounded by a lush forest with plenty of wildlife and it was very important to our clients that we incorporate nature into the design and not obstruct any exterior views. The homeowners also had an unconventional request of creating a secret man cave. The entrance is through the pantry, and no one would know about it unless it is pointed out.

How do you approach a whole home renovation differently than when designing a select few spaces?
A When designing the home from scratch, we want
to first make a list of the rooms we need to have included based on how the homeowners lived as a family. We then consider how those rooms relate to each other, and that typically determines the layout and placement of the rooms. Natural light was a big component of this design, so window direction and placement were also a big factor in the final footprint. We focused to create a cohesive flow throughout the home in terms of aesthetic, which is why we incorporated beautiful architectural details throughout, like wall trim, coffered ceilings, and captivating archways.

We cannot get enough of the understated elegance of the foyer. What were the goals of this space?
A
We are all about first impressions, so the entranceway was very important to our team. The high ceilings, staircase, wall trim, and arches all add to the initial impression as you walk in. It really sets the tone for the home. When dealing with a new build property, it is important to consider architectural elements that are cohesive and respect a specific style. In this case the Georgian architecture influenced our interior selections, and given the rural location, we incorporated a lot of Craftsman-style elements

Speaking of the foyer, the expanisve tile inlay is simply breathtaking. How does flooring play into the overall design of this home?
A
Because of the property restraints, a closed vestibule was not possible. We wanted to bring in the warmth of the wood flooring to be carried throughout the open areas, but we also needed the functionality of a tiled floor, so we designed a mosaic tile insert as you walk in that really added to the overall aesthetic of the entryway.

Let’s talk kitchens! What are your top five must-haves when it comes to kitchen design? Form or function?
Q
With a primarily white backdrop, how did you ensure that each room felt warm and inviting?
A
When designing any kitchen, we start with the function first. We want to first create a work triangle between the fridge, range, and sink, with lots of counter space in between. One request from our clients was a giant island with nothing on it. We normally like to have the sink in the island, but in this case, we left it bare, which makes it the perfect gathering surface when entertaining. The full-length windows and patio doors were strategically placed to maximize the natural light, which also affected the overall kitchen design.

We love designing with white! We often design with lots of white, so we have become pros at understanding how to infuse warmth into what can sometimes otherwise feel like a very sterile space. It is all about bringing in a variety of warm elements, like wood flooring, aged antique accents, hardware, lighting, and textural wall coverings or wall trim, and creating contrast through these accents.

A gorgeous, earthy shade of green makes an appearance in more than one space in the home. Tell us about this color and the thought process behind how and where to use it.
A You may notice that we brought in green accents
throughout the main floor area, the accent wall in the dining room, the dinette chairs, and the wall color in the mudroom. The goal was to bring a part of the outdoors in since the home was surrounded by trees and natural greenery. It was also the inspiration for bringing in the woodsy-themed wall coverings into the powder room.

The multilevel staircase is such a treat! Tell us a little about it.
A The staircase is really a main focal point of the home. It
is bright because of the skylight that is above it as well as the windows on each landing area. The risers and spindles are painted white, and the treads were stained to match the flooring throughout.
Q
We were not expecting gray in the upstairs bedroom, but it could not be more perfect! As such an intimate space within the home, what special considerations do you make when it comes to design selections?
A
The vibe in the master bedroom is an extension of the main floor. Bright, cozy, with a lot of layered textural elements. The leather bench at the end of the bed adds warmth and texture. It feels like a bit of a nod to cottage but still put together, as this is their primary home. With double doors leading into the bedroom, symmetry was important. The windows flank the bed and sit over the nightstands.

How do this home’s exterior design and outdoor spaces play into its interior?

Name one unique element in this home that sets it apart from the rest.
A
The exterior landscaping and pool are visible from the family room, kitchen, and veranda, so the clients wanted it to feel polished and put together. The shed, just off the pool, is a mini copy of the house with the same materials and color palette. The rectangular pool is large, symmetrical, and surrounded by what seems like an endless forest. It is common to see deer, wild turkeys, bunnies, and other wildlife trotting across the property, which completely adds to the warmth and charm.

The man cave, located off the pantry, is a unique element of the design. Our client’s quirky personality is deeply reflected in the raw wood bar, original barber chair, and memorabilia displayed throughout this room.

A reflection of the sky and ocean, blue evokes feelings of purity, peace, serenity, and calm. When I’m working on a home involving more than one decision-maker, blue is usually the saving grace and common denominator that moves the design process forward if the project is at a standstill. In addition, blue has literal value because it can also increase the sale price of a home. To gain a better understanding of how to maximize its potential, it’s important to understand and recap the baseline principles of its color theory.

Color Theory and
Impact
The idea of color theory can sound a little overwhelming, but, for the purposes of the home, there are three main components: primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. Primary colors are typically first taught in elementary school and include blue, yellow, and red. Secondary colors are created by mixing two primary colors together; they are green (blue + yellow), orange (yellow + red), and purple (red + blue). Tertiary colors, such as teal, violet, and amber, are created by mixing primary colors with secondary colors. Primary colors tend to be starker and bolder, whereas secondary and tertiary colors appear to be more natural and soothing to the eye. In general, the higher the usage of primary colors in a space, the more modern and graphic it will look, whereas greater levels of secondary and tertiary colors create a more fluid and transitional sensibility. The warmth and coolness of colors also play an integral role in the overall design. A warmer blue tone means that it has more yellow in it, whereas cooler blues have larger quantities of gray and slate tones. A warmer-toned blue, like a pale robin’s egg, can be used in smaller rooms to add excitement and open them up, creating the illusion of larger and lighter spaces. Deeper blues are great for adding richness and creating depth and drama.

Applying a deep navy to a south-, southeast-, or southwest-facing room means it will see more natural sunlight, which can help diffuse its colder and more stoic nature. Applying the same color to a more conservatively lit room may appear gloomy, dark, and cold. Similar to wood tones, warmer-toned blues mix a little more fluidly with other warmer shades, and the same idea can be applied to cooler tones. This is not to say you can’t mix warm and cool tones, but there’s often an extra layer of thought required to ensure proper balance and harmony (usually with the addition of other textures and metals).

Pairing Color with
Texture
A variety of wondrous and magical things can happen when pairing blue with different textures. Using the right type of metal in conjunction with blue can be the difference between a room that doesn’t take flight and one that soars. Lighter, cooler, and paler blues naturally blend well with nickel, silver, and black metal. The addition of these metals can bring out the natural lightness and effervescence of these brighter notes. Darker and more moody blues, like navy and midnight, pair especially well with warmer metals, like copper, gold, and brass. They naturally add warmth and interest, drawing out their inherent richness and depth, similar to the addition of sunlight. This is a common combination in midcentury- or bold art deco-inspired palettes.

The Importance of
Variety
They say variety is the spice of life, and this is especially true when using blue because of its immensely popular nature. Have you ever left a show home or display suite and thought there was something that didn’t feel quite right? Maybe it seemed a little too staged or slightly unnatural, but you couldn’t quite put your finger on the problem? Usually, the reason is because of a strong accent color with inadequate variation and transition-for example, if you take a turquoise cushion and use the exact same color in a vase, in a print, and in a throw in every room in the house. Applying color this way can become “design by numbers,” leaving spaces looking artificial and devoid of any real depth or soul.

Bridging shades of
Blue
Whenever I design a home with blue in mind, I use a minimum of three shades. The more varying tones that can be incorporated, the better because, with each additional shade, you’re layering color and adding depth throughout, as opposed to having a singular point of focus. It allows for a more natural and gradual transition from one accent to the next, which makes it easier and more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Circling back to color theory, the additional blue colors usually include secondary and tertiary shades in the mix. A color can look completely different simply with the addition of different transition colors to accompany it. An opulent royal blue can be made broodier and more dramatic when paired with denim and cobalt or skew fresher and spritelier when mixed with a pale teal or sapphire. In addition to transition colors, it’s important to also consider bridging textures and patterns. Let’s say after a successful day of shopping, you pick up a vibrant turquoise cushion to accompany your dark, slate-covered sofa. Upon application, you can’t seem to bring the room to life. No matter what you do, it looks a little flat and one-dimensional because the two stark elements are so disconnected. What you need to do is bridge the gap between these two separate entities with transitional notes so there isn’t such a harsh contrast. Consider a textured earth-toned throw (to add warmth to the slate couch) and an additional checkered navy accent pillow (to ground the bright turquoise cushion). This starts a dialogue between the cushion and sofa (two items that were otherwise quite isolated and disconnected), creating synergy and harmony.

Building a
Color
Story
The best designs usually stem from an overall concept that the designer is trying to actualize or a concept that already lives in your own head. What is the overall sentiment of the space? Is it a coastal vibe? Bohemian? Maybe sexy midcentury or a global palette? Whatever it may be, focus on creating that bigger story before zooming in to all of the smaller details. This is where homeowners can get into trouble and usually what causes a mini breakdown while shopping (because you don’t know what you’re looking for or designing toward). At Louis Duncan-He Designs, with our natural West Coast perspective, we’re always striving to find ways to add in natural depth and organic qualities to fully realize a vision.
If coastal, natural, and West Coast is the name of the game, then think softer, paler, and more natural blue shades and textures. Baby blues and white coral mixed with rattan instantly tell a Hampton’s story, whereas darker navy, crisp white, and natural wood steer things toward the nautical. If you’re wanting a master bedroom with a bit of extra tranquility and calm, use watery and softer shades of blue combined with neutral beige, taupe, and sand tones to evoke the power of the beach and ocean. With a West Coast-inspired direction, mix richer blues, like cerulean, teal, turquoise, and ocean, with earth tones, rich greens, and varying shades of walnut and teak to infuse the spirit of the Pacific Northwest. Having a clear design direction at the beginning of the process will bring the space to life.

If modern and contemporary are what your heart is calling for, add primary colors and play with materiality. A bold primary blue mixed with clean lines and lacquered and polished surfaces instantly evokes a modern feeling. Dial up the volume of the room further with the addition of steel, abstract art, and a sculptural light fixture. For a more global sensibility, mix a strong blue with stark whites and jewel tones in conjunction with tribal patterns, provincial French prints, or intricate white and blue ceramics, taking you from Africa to Provence, Portugal, and China. That’s the beauty of color—there are myriads of ways to make it work to further enhance your vision. Many colors come and go throughout the years, falling in and out of “it” lists and the latest design trends. But blue is a constant staple in the design world that’s not going anywhere. It’s reliable, and it is not a coincidence that it represents stability, dependability, and loyalty, which is a testament to its consistency and longevity. But, with any high-demand design element, there’s the risk of oversaturation, which can lead to a lack of originality. With such a malleable and versatile color, it’s easy to get comfortable with its execution and lose the connection to story and creativity. If you’re considering blue as the next accent in your home, take a moment to consider all the tips and tricks at your disposal to create a story that sings.

It was specifically designed to cater to visiting relatives and friends, with functional storage and features made for seating a crowd.
When you know you don’t want a white kitchen, it’s important to find the right color. These cabinets were made to be noticed in Farrow & Ball Hague Blue with honey-bronze hardware accents—a bold, yet classic look. The hood and island feature a custom oak finish, complementing the rich, blue kitchen cabinetry while maintaining the statement aesthetic. Natural ceiling beams complete the look while also drawing the eye toward stunning water views and outdoor spaces. Neutral countertops and faux brick backsplash add texture and contrast. Of note is the custom island, which features ample seating and two styles of stools, including upholstered fauxleather stools and backless swivel stools that easily tuck under the island overhang when not in use.
