Police are seeking the public’s help to identify the person responsible for spray paint damage to the new science building and equipment at the construction site, officials said. The university released a statement Wednesday, Aug. 27 saying it would reward anyone who provides information leading to an arrest up to $1,000. “This reward is to encourage anyone who might have information or might have seen something to come forward and contact UNA Police Department, said Vice President of Student Affairs David Shields. “This information could be very helpful in finding those responsible for the damage. UNA Police Chief Bob Pastula said the crime was photo by KATLYN SHANNON I Staff Photographer reported Tuesday, Aug. 26. The Army announced in October 2013 it would shut down 13 of its 273 programs, including UNA’s. The decision was reversed in November and UNA was placed on probationary status, requiring the program to undergo evaluation. In April 2014, Lt. Col. Michael Snyder announced his retirement from the Army and his service to UNA ROTC. The program caught its first break when Major William Pruett was hired in July to lead the program as chair of the department. “He has a very aggressive recruiting strategy, and it’s very impressive, said Interim President John Thornell. “I believe he will be able to get us where we need to be. The program caught another

break when the Army realized programs needed a chance to improve before receiving closure notices. “A closure announcement made last year was premature, and the Army owns up to that, Pruett said. “To correct (it), the army has instituted a specific system to help us figure out how we need to go forward in the future. Thornell said the Army’s closure announcement also negatively affected the program’s recruiting. Pruett echoed Thornell’s concerns. “We have had a lot of people who still think UNA’s program is closing, Pruett said. “Worst case scenario, we still have a minimum of two years.

Campus officials anticipated a large number of Chinese students enrolling in the new Integrative Health graduate program this fall, but reality fell short of expectations. Last year, a partnership between the university and Chinese businessman Zhang Zhiting was finalized, a new faculty member was hired, and Zhang expressed intent to recruit as many as a few hundred students to study integrative health at UNA. “We were depending on him, said Interim University President John Thornell. “The problem is communication is lacking. We’ve had no further discussion since February. When Zhang visited the Shoals in February, he purchased the 155-acre former Florence Golf and Country Club, located west of Alabama 20.
