“Our partnership with Floréac is so much more than just a business relationship.” Throughout the generations, our family has been growing a vast variety of crops. Piet: “My greatgrandfather founded the family business which mainly produced field vegetables and glasshouse grapes back then. My grandfather then added a wide assortment of greenhouse vegetables and decided to also venture in the cut flower industry.” Piet’s father continued along the same line but started directing his focus on flowering pot plants as well, such as geraniums and violas. Piet: “These days, we are focusing heavily on specialty products within this niche market: more unusual products that give us a competitive edge. Being able to draw upon the extensive knowledge and expertise of our family business helps us stay ahead of the game.” Ongoing innovation and development Kuivenhoven Poeldijk only produces seasonal plants, so no plants are grown year round. “We simply follow the tide
of the seasons, which is great. But peak times throughout the year can put our team under a lot of pressure. One of the busiest times for us is during the winter months, when we focus on selling poinsettias and hellebores. As soon as this peak selling period passes, our focus goes to campanulas. We get a bit of a break in the summer months, but as soon as autumn arrives, it’s all hands on deck again. During our busiest times, we bring in around 30 temporary workers to assist our permanent staff.” The plant growing business in Poeldijk is always on the lookout for innovative techniques and advancements. Piet: “We work in partnership with plant breeders to produce highly resistant varieties with longer flowering times, stronger leaf growth, different colours, etc. We run around 20 projects each year like this.” Through their membership with growers association Addenda®, f l o r e a c ma ga zi n e

Kuivenhoven Poeldijk is able to market certain plants as branded products. Piet: “Together with the cooperative, we have given the campanula a serious boost, both in terms of growing methods and plant traits. Our enhanced purple campanula is now entering its third generation.”
By working together, we are in a much stronger position to respond to signals from the market. Piet Kuivenhoven, Kuivenhoven Poeldijk
Partnerships and openness Kuivenhoven Poeldijk has been closely collaborating with Floréac for over 5 years: “Our partnership is highly valued and extends well beyond your average business relationship. We have built a relationship of trust, where everything is up for discussion, from crop protection to commercial targets.” Piet believes that maintaining an open relationship with both suppliers and buyers is an absolute must: “All three parties truly depend on one
another to meet the ever more diverse needs of end customers. We don’t know if the end customer will continue to buy from their local garden centre in the future, or whether they will prefer shopping for plants from the couch. Ultimately, by working together, we are in a much stronger position to respond to signals from the market. We feed and inspire each other based on our specific areas of expertise. But to do so, we need to be willing to be open and vulnerable.”

supplier in the spotlight
Since 1985, Danish nursery Lundager has been producing tiny green plants for the European market. Succulents, cacti, anthuriums, tillandsia – these are but a few of the species grown on the company’s 4 hectares in Odense, Southern Denmark. “In the course of 30 years, we’ve developed from a small subcontractor into a globally active niche business that offers over 500 different types of mini plants,” tells Ove Lundager. “The secret to our success? A passion for innovation and a nose for fertile partnerships.”

Lundager and Floréac: cultivating a shared hunger for innovation Lundager’s mini plants are sold in all Danish retail chains, yet over 80% of its production is exported. Ove Lundager: “Although our main export market is Europe, we’ve also had orders from Russia, China and Japan. International business opportunities are always a bonus, of course.” At the heart of the nursery lie sustainability, innovation and cooperation. “We take pride in our
ability to produce year-round using a minimum of chemicals. Through ecological investments – opting for energy-saving greenhouse roofing material, for example – we’re able to grow more and healthier plants. It’s all connected: our environmental efforts, innovative production and satisfied customers.”

Ultimately, every person here contributes to our inventive business culture.” “Keeping track of trends and evolutions in our sector is a must, especially if we want to stay ahead and maintain a trendsetter position ourselves. By attending seminars and exhibitions like Myplant & Garden in Milan, we keep ourselves informed and get inspired. You could definitely say that we are a passionate company – we’re enthusiastic about our trade, about growth and about teamwork.” A blooming partnership Nursery Lundager has been working with Floréac for over 15 years now. Ove: “We’re connected through that hunger for innovation – it’s at the core of both our businesses. It’s probably one of the reasons why we work so well together, too. Floréac looks to us for a strong, exclusive and regularly updated assortment of mini plants, and knows it can rely on our quality and punctuality.” “The partnership between Floréac and Lundager has been pleasant and fertile so far – it’s one that grows year after year. I can only hope that we continue working together in the same flexible and smooth way. Perhaps we can optimize our communication in that Floréac gets a clear overview of our assortment at all times, though. Maybe during a personal visit to our company? Let this be our invitation!”
