Teaching Respect to Our Children Pastor Bill Monroe
R
ecent tragedies such as the Florida and Maryland school shootings have caused Americans to realize we are living in a sick society. So what is the basic problem we are facing with our children and teens? One mom may have gotten as near the truth as anyone when she said, “It seems our children have lost respect for everything.” Mr. Webster wrote that respect is showing “deference, honor, dignity, reverence, esteem and regard.” The basis for respect is Genesis 1:26-27, where it says we are made in God’s image. Man is the only creature bearing the image of God, and hence, deserves respect. To kill another person is to disrespect and strike against God Himself. So who and what should we respect?
Teach them to show respect for age. Leviticus 19:32 says “Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head and honor the face of the old man.” Another negative mark of our culture is that our elderly are shown such disrespect. Today, we have more knowledge than any generation in history, but we lack wisdom—and one reason for it is our lack of respect for those who have it—the elderly. Teach your children to respect authority. Throughout their lives, children will have to relate positionally to those who are over them: parents, teachers, pastors, law enforcement officers, physicians, college professors, military officers, and employers. Romans 13:1 says, “Let every soul be subject to the higher powers.”
Teach your children to respect God. As our CreTeach them to respect the property of others. In ator, He deserves the utmost reverence, respect and America today, we see a massive effort to stop stealing: honor. Teach your children to never use God’s name security cameras, uniformed officers—all frivolously, profanely, or casually. Teach America’s future hope are testimony that we have lost respect them to respect His house in their be- for a stable society for others’ property. In addition, to defile havior and attire. The Ten is critical. Parents are the first exposure children have Commandments are clear: “Thou shalt not steal” (Exto adults. Respect for parents usually spills over as re- odus 20:15). spect for other adults, and lack of respect for parents Children need to be taught respect for the nation, does the same. The idea of parents treating children as its traditions and history. This is implied in the bib“peers,” allowing them to call them (and other adults) lical principle of “Honor the king”(1 Peter 2:17). Salutby their first name, permitting backtalk and sassing, ing the flag and reverence during the national anthem has brought us to the end of respect. are ways of demonstrating respect for our nation. AlTeach your children to respect position. “Honor though it may be a wicked country at present, we have the king” (1 Peter 2:7) and “Honor to whom honor a godly heritage and a noble past. Teach your children is due”(Romans 13:7) are scriptures that teach this to respect it. The best way to teach respect is to model principle. Teach your children to use titles of position it ourselves—it is “more caught than taught.” when addressing people in official positions: “Your America’s future hope for a stable society rests in a Honor” (Judges), “Mayor” or “Congressman” (elected generation who understands and practices respect for officials), “Pastor,” “Preacher,” or “Reverend” (religious God, self, country, parents and property. leader), “Mr.” or “Mrs.”(school teachers). Salute to Armed Forces Day Sunday, May 27 10:30 AM
H Patriotic Music H All veterans recognized H Inspiring Bible message H Active duty or veteran, you’re invited to be our guest on this special day.
And Having Done All, To Stand A Salute to the Armed Forces We can identify America’s Armed Forces easily because they are an entire group of people who stand apart, risking life, limb, and death for a cause higher than themselves. They are separated by branches, divided by rank, but fight as one. The Army, Marine Corp, Navy, Air Force, National Guard and Coast Guard join as a single, lethal unit providing America’s defense and ensuring her freedom. Because they stand, we, the people of the United States, sit in safety and peace. We who sit in liberty’s leisure have a grave duty to those who stand and have stood through years past. It is entrusted to us to remember we are indebted to those who have bought for us our current life of prosperity. It is our responsibility to teach our children to step carefully down the independence trail cleared and paved by the sacrifices of brave men and women. Most of all, it is our privilege to be a grateful nation. FBT’s Salute to the Armed Forces Day is dedicated to pause and specifically focus on these things. With special music, a stirring video presentation, and individual recognition to each member of the armed forces present, we express our appreciation and commendation. We highly regard the courage of a solid, uncompromising refusal to back down or back away from danger for the sake of someone else. If our men and women in uniform voluntarily do this for us, their fellow citizens, then is it unreasonable to stand with Christ with any less tenacity? Jesus Christ offers us a great freedom stronger and more secure than that of the United States. It is found in His truth, His way,
His life and His death. If we accept His gift of soul freedom, we receive a Heavenly citizenship, and all the rights and privileges granted to those who belong to His kingdom. Our soul, once it belongs to Jesus, is equipped with the finest set of weapons, and the most effective gear for protection, crafted by God Himself for the purpose of defeating our greatest enemy, Satan. We are given truth, righteousness, the gospel, faith, salvation, the Spirit, and the Word of God. Our uniform’s fabric, prayer, is designed to withstand extreme dangers, and safely equip us against the enemy. God’s orders for battle are clear—stand. If we can do nothing else for Christ, we most certainly can stand with Him. Do you suppose those thousands who gave their lives for our country were casually dedicated (in an apathetic sort of way) to a vague idea of a possibly existing country? There is a solid certainty in the military member’s determination to be loyal to his cause, his country, and his fellowmen. Do we, as followers of Christ, have this sort of loyalty? We have a cause, it is truth. We have a kingdom, it is Heaven. We have before us scores of the hopeless, the lost, and the deceived who desperately need the Gospel. The order to retreat has not been given. The enemy is strong, but the victory is sure. The directive remains unchanged—stand. “Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand,” (Ephesians 6:13).
