The Children’s Fairyland amusement park along the beautiful Lake Merritt is an ideal place for children to go on a fairytale getaway with their family and friends. The weekend before Halloween, UC Berkeley Circle K’ers, joined by Circle K’ers from Cal State East Bay, took a bus to Lake Merritt and enjoyed a day at Fairyland. Most of the volunteers were assigned to one of the many booths at the amusement park. MAYRA TERRONES spent the day handing out nutritious apples and crackers to park-goers, while BROOKSHIELD TRAN, ELIZABETH ROCHA, and WHITNEY POL worked the popcorn machine. Other volunteers handed out Clif Bars, push-ups, and more freebies to both

PIRATES OF EMERSON

FRIGHT NIGHT ing forward to scaring people inside the haunted houses, I was disappointed when I was assigned to be the “ring master” and instructed to stand in front of the house to take the customers’ tickets. Nevertheless, as the night progressed and customers trickled in one by one, the site became alive with Halloween spirit and my heart danced. Blood-curdling screams and evil screeches echoed throughout the various houses, and I grinned to myself as I watched people tumble out, laughing hysterically and clutching onto each other like there was no tomorrow. At 11 p.m., joined by a few of De Anza’s Circle K’ers, Berkeley Circle K headed toward a late-night feast at a local In-N-Out to celebrate a successful night of tricks and mischief. Without a doubt, Pirates of Emerson brought out the playful trickster inside every Circle K’er and left us with unforgettable memories.

Only hours after the end of the Children’s Halloween Festival, 14 Circle Ker’s arose from their slumber ready for a weekend of more community service. The morning was still in Halloween-y that Sunday, surrounding Berkeley with a thick layer of fog. But the haziness could not stop us from the nearly three-hour drive to Camp Cazadero. When we finally arrived, we were

At lunch, the camp chef treated us to homemade lasagna, which we all devoured in no time at all. We also managed to surprise Kiwanian DAN PANNELL – who was working just as hard alongside us Circle Ker’s – with a “happy birthday” song. Afterward, we finished the last of our tasks and managed to leave a few hours earlier than expected. Even though we had to wake up early that morning, we all had fun, and we could only begin to imagine what kind of excitement awaits us at the extended Camp Cazadero project coming in the spring!

Though our original task was to take down the tents at the campsite, someone had already completed the job for us. Fortunately, the camp supervisor had many more to keep us busy. We separated into teams to finish all the jobs necessary to prepare the camp for the winter winds. The jobs ranged from small tasks like collecting fire hoses, storing floor panels, sweeping the amphitheater, and clearing out the drains to larger tasks like scraping moss off the cabin roofs and cleaning out the gutters. KIWANIS FAMILY CHAIR

Berkeley Kiwanis Kollegiate staff writer, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) coordinator, Berkeley Kiwanis Holiday auction co-chair, and Lieutenant Governor of Division 2, representing the Hayward Castro Valley Kiwanis Club.

What plans do you have as the Kiwanis Division 2 LTG? My goals as LTG are threefold. First, leadership; finding an incoming LTG. Elect, and be available to all members of our Division (including our Sponsored Youth!!). Second, I want to increase membership by 40% overall in Division 2 Kiwanis Clubs and increase interclubbing and sponsored youth involvement. Finally, foundation support is also very important; eights Dunlaps (one from each club + one from LTG and hubby’s weight loss!), and DSAs (Distinguished Service Award) in every club!! What is one of your favorite events throughout the year? During these events, how do you keep your energy up!? All events become favorites! RIF is superb, however, as I LOVE children, and seeing smiles on the faces of young children getting to pick a storybook of his/her own is so uplifting! Have you ever seen a child walk away HUGGING a book? Hard to top that! What advice do you have for future Circle K’ers? Involve yourself to the degree that you personally want, in areas that you personally love, and learn from each and every experience. AND... share your energy!!

SCARY MOVIE NIGHT

SE

SCREAMING FOR SERVICE The suspense was ringing against the walls as you walked down the hall of Wheeler’s bottom floor. It felt eerie as you passed room 24. The lights were off and you could hear screams from the “non-scary” room where Coraline was being aired. Phone, the scary movie, was in room 20 where, ironically, chortles and guffaws could be heard among the smattering of gasps. Watching scary movies with Circle K is something you don’t want to miss. Where else can you hear JC ALHAMBRA scream his lungs of steel out while tasting some of VINCENT LIM’s Boston Crème Muffins? After Phone and Coraline ended, Orphan

and Nightmare Before Christmas started in their respective rooms. Suddenly, however, an ear-shattering blare reverberated throughout the building. It was definitely not coming from the jolly music of Nightmare Before Christmas or the eerie silence of Orphan. A number of people jumped in their seats only to realize that it was the fire alarm! What else could we do but evacuate? We hurriedly cleaned up our mess, grabbed the fundraised money, food, laptops, videos, and relocated to Dwinelle. At first, it didn’t seem like the eerie atmosphere necessary for these movies could be found in the well-lit halls of Dwinelle,

CAL KRONICLE NOVEMBER 2009

but Orphan quickly proved us wrong. Orphan still managed to elicit screams from its viewers. The exclamations of IRIS HSU could actually be heard from Sather Gate, and that alone made the night worthwhile. But the night was more than just thrills. We raised $96.90 for our District Fundraising Initiatives through a family competition held at the social. Unfortunately, the winners were the Black Monarchs, but we should still commend them for raising money for our DFIs. Scary movies, laughter, screams, food, and money for charity – what more do you need at a social? Good job, KENNETH LEE!

Fall Training Conference

THE BEGINNING

On Friday, November 6, 49 Circle K’ers began their threehour drive to the annual Fall Training Conference (FTC) in Sonora, California. Kiwanians FRANK BLISS, BILL and VIRGINIA CARPENTER, PHUOC KHONG, Circle K’ers from DeAnza, and UC Berkeley (UCB) Circle K’ers DARRELL HAWKINS, JOSHUA LOMELI, VINCENT LIM, JOHANN SCHLAGER, ALI ALKHATIB, and PETER LE graciously offered to help drive members to FTC. On the way there, the Circle K’ers enjoyed rural landscapes and a beautiful night sky as they cruised down the highway.

OPENING SESSION . After registering and settling into the cabins, opening session began at 9 p.m. with a skit prepared by the FTC committee. California-NevadaHawaii’s (Cal-Nev-Ha) District board members were then introduced to a roaring crowd of over 500 Circle K’ers. NINA YANG, the FTC chair, gave all attendees a warm welcome before formally begining the three-day training conference.

FRIDAY WORKSHOPS

TREASURER & NEWSLETTER CHAIR

By MARGARET CHIU & FLORENCE LEE

The gathering of Circle K’ers dispersed for the first round of workshops after opening session. The majority of UC Berkeley (UCB) Circle K stayed in the auditorium for the Icebreaker Mall headed by UCB’s very own Darrell Hawkins. The workshop was very popular and everyone had fun. Circle K’ers ran around during Amoeba, held their stances during Ninja, and shuffled their way past shoes during Minefield. Afterwards, most headed to the Stargazing workshop, which was cut short due to overly cloudy conditions. Unfortunately, the Ghost and Paranormal Researching workshop was also cancelled, so many went and grabbed a $1 cup of Ramen. Ramen was sold throughout FTC as part of a District fundraiser.

CHEERING . Mornings in Sonora rang with the voices of Circle K’ers as they cheered against one another in intense cheer battles. Even during these early hours, new and old members were pumped up and ready to cheer loudly for UCB!

TO BOLDLY SERVE WHERE NO ONE HAS SERVED BEFORE

SATURDAY WORKSHOPS

Loaded with workshops, Saturday was easily the most intense day of FTC. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Circle K’ers attended six different classes taught by both Kiwanians and Circle K’ers. Some were position-oriented. For instance, Executive Board members met their E-Board counterparts from other clubs during the Executive Board Workshops. Others were informational. MATT TADROS hosted a public speaking workshop alongside Capital Lieutenant Governor, MACKY MCGOON, while MONICA BAYYA joined forces with District K-Family chair, Ali for the Strengthening Kiwanis Family Bonds workshop. Phuoc’s workshop on personal finance was a Circle K favorite. MARGARET CHIU agreed that it definitely taught her a lot more about being responsible with money in the future. Many more UCB Circle K’ers hosted workshops that day. Margaret and KENNETH LEE hosted a Fundraising workshop that drew in an overwhelming crowd of 80 people. Good reviews were also given to TAMMY TRAN’s Time Management, MIMI DAO and LINDA SHI’s Hip Hop, and FLORENCE LEE’s Health and Fitness workshops.

EVENING SESSION Saturday night, all the Circle K’ers regrouped to induct and recognize all of its new members! The group also got to hear from its District Governor, HONYIN CHIU. Throughout the session, fun talent acts graced the stage, including UCB’s very own JC ALHAMBRA, who sang a medley of popular songs while strumming away on his ukulele.

Food CAMPFIRE SKITS The campfire skits that followed were one of the highlights at FTC. UCB’s skit, planned by Matt and the Spirit & Social committee, followed the journey of three Hollywood actors as they faced-off with Darth Vader – played by Josh – and the Dark Side. Filled with funny one-liners and an intense dance battle, the skit was a hit with the crowd. The skits put on by the other schools were very enjoyable, too, featuring creative props and cute plotlines.

“I’ll have to say that Berkeley Circle K’s skit was definitely one of the best! I was surprised at how well members acted, and it didn’t feel fake at all. The dance battle was also pretty hot and very well-choreographed. Finally, I loved the humor in our skit and the plotline, which was one of the most comprehensible out of the other skits performed that night.” – MARGARET CHIU

CLOSING SESSION Before everyone said their goodbyes Sunday morning, all the Circle K’ers of Cal-Nev-Ha gathered for one last session to celebrate club accomplishments. UCB won awards in every category, including best club t-shirt, second best promotional video, most fundraised per member, most fundraised for PTP, and most fundraised for UNICEF and Starlight Foundation. UCB’s achievements definitely showed members just how strong the club really was!

Confessions of a Newsletter Chair And that’s just the beginning of the list, I’m afraid. I am such a sneaky little fraud. But that’s okay. I mean, come on – I had the time of my life at all of these events, even though I didn’t know what to expect. I got to dance the night away at FTC, watch the Succulent Seacucmbers “succulent” their way to victory at CKI North, see everyone in their creepy costumes at Children’s Halloween Festival, and eat brunch with my family at Thai Temple. (YEAH, YELLOW FEVER!) It’s exciting and spontaneous that way. So if you ever ask me about something, and I seem a little out of the loop, please excuse me. (Conveniently, this excuse will hide my “off ” days, too. You guys will never know.) So I’m just going to buckle up and get ready alongside the rest of you as we near the end of the semester. Personally? I can’t wait for my first Fall Banquet, Leadership Forum, and Fall Final Chill Night. Don’t leave me alone; I’d better see all of you – that means YOU – there!

North until last month. In fact, I didn’t even know “CKI” stood for “Crazy Kompetition for Infants”! I thought it stood for Circle K International. (Fail.)

FTC. CKI North. DCMs. DCON. Assassins. What do all these things mean?! For the new memLEE ber, understanding E C N E R O L By F TER CHAIR Circle K’s endless NEWSLET stream of acronyms and events can be like understanding a problem on a Chem 3A midterm (though maybe less traumatizing). While everyone is raving about Fall Training Conference (FTC) or District Convention (DCON), you can feel just a little out of the loop. Don’t worry, I’m just about as lost as you are sometimes. But how cn this be? Am I not a board member? WHAT’S GOING ON? Truth be told, I’m new to a lot of these things, too:

I may have hosted a workshop and gotten craaaazy at FTC, but... I was right alongside the rest of you during New Member Inductions. (First FTC ever!) I may be a family head, but... I’ve only been to one family social last year. And even then, the “family social” turned out to be a scrapbook workday. Thanks, PETER! (OH! And I’ve also never killed anyone in Assassins before. The one time I played, VINCENT killed me before I could get to my target. Way to go easy on a new member, Vincent!) I may have braved the eerie Haunted House at the Children’s Halloween’s Festival, but... I have (a) never felt so scared in a very long time (b) never been to a Children’s Halloween Festival.

I may have helped Crazy Kompetition for Infants (CKI) North chair, MAGGIE WONG, with the planning for CKI North, but... I’ve never actually attended a CKI
