Hello Circle K! As we near the second half of our 2009-2010 Circle K year, I just want to say how extremely proud I am of all the hard work and effort our board members have been putting forth to give all you the very best in Service, Leadership, and Fellowship. What makes me most proud, however, is seeing the excitement of every member, both new and old, during service projects and committee meetings. (It really shows, especially when it comes to planning skits.) Your contribution is what makes Berkeley Circle K such a unique JOSH LOMELI and multifaceted organization, and I want to thank everyone for PRESIDENT making this year one of the best so far! (909) 725-8552 After a weekend filled with Crazy Kompetitions for Infants and cki-president@lists.berkeley.edu workshops teaching Key Clubbers all about the college experience at Key 2 College, I hope all of you have had the chance to rest up for one of the biggest events of the year: Fall Training Conference! For those of you going for the first time, get ready to have tons of fun with your home club and with other Circle K’ers from all around California, Nevada, and Hawaii. We will definitely be one of the largest Circle K clubs out there, no doubt about it. So get ready for a weekend full of spirit, fun, and memories that will last forever! Awesomeness.

It was a night of laughs, new friendships, and, of course, delicious food! Together, old members, new members, and board members spent a relaxing night in Emeryville. Organized by Spirit and Social Chair MATTHEW TADROS, this new social was a sure success. The large group of Circle K’ers who signed up for the Night on the Town Social were broken up into small groups of five or six. The intimate, small group setting allowed members to mingle in a less intimidating environment. Each group was then sent to one of Emeryville’s many restaurants, including favorites such as Pasta Pomodoro, Fuddruckers, Buckhorn, and California Pizza Kitchen. After dinner, members wandered the stores of Emeryville. Before taking the F bus back to campus, everyone congregated outside Cold Stone Creamery for ice cream and waffle cones. It proved to be a night to remember as members cemented unforgettable friendships with one other.

Key2College was a wonderful and energetic event. On the morning of October 11, over 100 high schoolers entered Barrows Hall with full force. The best part of all? None of them came late! The workshops started bright and early at 10:30 a.m. – poor high schoolers! – and ended at 1:00 p.m. Judging by all the positive comments, many students thought the workshops were very helpful. After the classes, both high school Key Clubbers and Berkeley Circle K’ers enjoyed Sufficient Grounds sandwiches, hot pizza from La Vals, and bananas for lunch. Eager to grab a bite, the kids lined up neatly, took a plate of food, and headed out to Barrows Courtyard to eat and mingle. It was a truly amazing day – a day well spent. Through Key2College, Circle K’ers were able to bond with local Key Clubbers while giving them the tools and resources they will need to obtain their college aspirations. What will next year’s Key2College bring? Only time can tell. Who knows! It may be even bigger and better than this year’s! 5

LEADERSHIP/DISTRICT

Hey guys! With the start of October comes the beginning of the dreaded midterm season. For many of you, this is a horrible tradition while for others, this is a first-time experience. Regardless of whether you’re a first or fourth year, I hope that you are all making it through your exams, papers, and projects. We’ve completed our first full month of the Fall Circle K Semester, and I know a lot of you are beginning to get an idea of what Circle K is all about. You’ve experienced service firsthand as you attended various projects throughout the month, and you’ve witnessed the making of new friendships at the exciting socials that took you to places like the Big C and San Francisco. But what about leadership? As you become more accustomed to the activities that Circle K has to offer, don’t be afraid to take up a leadership role in this incredible organization. Join committees. They are great ways to see how this club functions on a more detailed level. Itching for a specific service project that hasn’t happened yet? Chair it yourself. Our Project Coordinator, DARRELL HAWKINS, will be more than willing to help you out. And of course there’s the upcoming Fall Training Conference at Sonora County from November 6-8. That weekend will be jam-packed with

workshops that will teach you useful skills. Do large crowds scare you? Don’t worry, there’s a public speaking workshop there to help cure you of your fear. Interested in becoming a board member? Then why not attend the workshop on running for Circle K office? And for those of you who have that boy or girl you want to impress, there’s a ballroom dancing and hip-hop workshop

to give you those smooth moves on the dance floor. As you can see, there are a multitude of ways for you to hone your leadership skills, and you should try to take advantage of as many as you can. I hope that you continue to explore all the options that Circle K has to offer because – trust me – you’ve only scratched the surface!

All Hands on Deck for

New Member Orientation By IRIS HSU /

M.D.&E. CHAIR

A new semester welcomes new faces to Circle K, and many of them were part of the large turnout at this fall semester’s New Member Orientation. Members were given a brief introduction and a background presentation by our very own board on Circle K’s history, the club’s District initiatives, and the benefits of joining one of the largest student groups at UC Berkeley. After a quick game of Jeopardy to test the members’ newly acquired knowledge, the group split up into four teams for a scavenger hunt across campus. Although all four teams had creative photos and earned a close number of total points, the team of FLORENCE LEE, AIRI TAKASHIMA, ANGELO RICARTE, LILY OKAMURO, SHIVANI KAPUR, KYLE TSE, KEIKO TANAKA, and JEAN YANG garnered the most points. Congratulations!

The winners of the scavenger hunt show their Circle K spirit by spelling out “CKI.”

This scavenger hunt team poses in front of Ludwig’s Fountain on Upper Sproul.

Members scramble to form ships during a game of All Hands on Deck.

A Message From

LEADERSHIP/DISTRICT Nina Yang FTC CHAIR

Fall Training Conference (FTC) – It’s the biggest event you’ve been looking forward to all semester! You go into the woods, separated from all the things that could possibly distract you: Facebook, Twitter, cell phones, and laptops. FTC is a great experience that will allow you to bond with other Circle K’ers. When you arrive on Friday, District board and District committee members will be there to greet you and hand you a FTC packet containing your program, souvenirs, and other important items. That night, you will enjoy the great outdoors, stargazing with other Circle K’ers and, if you’re brave enough, joining in campfire ghost stories. Be sure to get plenty of rest that night, though; Saturday is going to be full with activities. On Saturday, you will mainly be preoccupied with workshops. These informative classes are both fun and educational. If you’re a new member, you may want to learn more about Circle K, or you may want to gain some leadership training. Either way, all the resources at FTC are at your disposal. During lunch, you’ll be trying something new. Sure, we all love to bond within our own clubs, but we should meet other people, too. So during lunch, you’ll be sitting with random people, which will prove to be both a fun and interesting experience. Saturday night is campfire skits night. You will get to see a selection of beautiful skits that every school has worked on for hours. I expect that you’ll see some dancing and some singing by all the Circle K’ers because that’s what we do. After the skits, there will be a dance. For those who don’t want to, there will be alternative activities as well, like movie and games. No one has to feel left out! Sunday is all about goodbyes. Saying goodbye to everyone is going to be hard, but guess what? You can see them again at DCON – District Convention – and at other District events! All weekend long, you will be amazed at all the screaming and cheering Circle K’ers can do. FTC is basically a cheer fest. Join me at Sonora and have fun!

Yummy Honey Walnut Shrimp Whenever I find myself in a Chinese restaurant, I always eagerly search for my favorite dish: shrimp with glazed walnuts! After craving it during a Chinese food dry spell, I finally managed to hunt a recipe down to try out for myself. What I found was a delicious dish that tasted just like the one I had been eating at the restaurants. If you’re a fan of shrimp (or even if you aren’t), this is one recipe you have to try!

Ingredients

• 1 cup water • 2/3 cup white sugar • ½ cup walnuts • 4 egg whites

• 2/3 cup mochiko (glutinous rice flour) • ¼ cup mayonnaise • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined • 2 tablespoons (tbsp) honey • 1 tbsp canned sweetened condensed milk • 1 cup vegetable oil for frying

Directions

1. Stir the water and sugar together in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and add the walnuts. Boil for two minutes. 2. Drain and place walnuts on a cookie sheet to dry. 3. Whip egg whites in a medium bowl until foamy. 4. Stir in the mochiko until it has a pasty

Forgive me father, for I have sinned. It has been six months since my last confession. I have reason to believe I may have killed someone last night. I was at the park, playing basketball, when a couple of guys, they were up to no good, started making trouble in my neighborhood. I got in one little fight, had my mom got scared, and said, “You’re moving with your uncle and auntie in [a town called] Bel-Air.” Comic by VINCENT LIM Illustrations by SOOYUN CHOI

Interview by FLORENCE LEE NEWSLETTER CHAIR

G! Tonight’s special guest: BRIAN HUANG!

Holding his caricature after October 6’s general meeting, BRIAN HUANG looked perplexed. I walked up to him and sent him my congratulations. He smiled and chuckled nervously. Did I really make him that uncomfortable? “Thanks,” he said hesitantly. A pause. “Er, I didn’t know you could get Member of the Week and Member of the Month…” All I could do was laugh at his surprise. I assured him that it was indeed possible – albeit a bit difficult – to hold both titles in the same month. Though September is only Brian’s first month with Circle K, he has already proven to be quite the member, fulfilling all three tenets of the club by the second general meeting of the semester. So how did he do it, exactly? Well, wonder no more. Here’s all the information you could ever want to know about September’s Member of the Month!
