I cannot describe how many hours I have spent with friends, team members and architects talking about architecture. How many different opinions I have heard and I have expressed. The truth is that after all the experiences and the years that past studying architecture the feeling that I have is the same one as that when I was playing “the Sims” on my computer when I was 12 years old. The love of creation. The satisfaction and the fulfillment I feel when I create a space where people live and evolve. A space that it is not only practical and offers the necessary functions, but a space that evokes feelings and sensations. A space that is a machine and a piece of art. The biggest lesson I have learned about myself, during these years, is that through my personal hard work I can achieve common goals that I share with a group. By setting my expectations high and discovering that I can overcome what I thought were my limits, I can always find innovative solutions. What challenges me the most is finding my inspiration. From the shapes in the clouds to heavy machinery or even a simple box, as Picasso said: “Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.”

DIPLOMA THESIS PROJECT
ON THE VERGE OF NATURAL & ARTIFICIAL ABSTRACT Observing the rapid reconstruction of Cyprus in recent years, we have turned our attention to Cyprus. Initial thought and desire was to design a building on a scale corresponding to that of current projects, that is, skyscrapers, coastal buildings complexes, marinas, etc.As we studied the history of the island, however, we abandoned our initial impulse. We understood that the real interest of this island lies not only in its coastline, but deeper in its mountains, in its subterranean, in those that helped to develop its culture. The history of Cyprus is linked to the production and marketing of copper. With the discovery of copper, Cyprus gained great importance as a place of production of the metal. But what does culture have to do with mineral resources? As is often stated, Culture is a multidimensional concept and is the sum of all material, spiritual, technical achievements of man. This has a direct link on the raw materials of each place since every culture, like Cyprus, has managed to grow through the exploitation of its natural resources. This, of course, has both positive and negative effects. If you look at the world map there are holes - craters created by mines everywhere. In other words, in order for a civilisation to develop, in order for humanity to progress, it had to drill all over the earth.
10
Our main concern, after the first research on the history and the environment of Cyprus linked with the natural resources and their exploitation by the human kind, was that people of Cyprus and worldwide are not aware of the outcome of the mining activities. Taking all that into account, we decided that the Red Lake near the Mitsero village is a solid example of the negative outcome of the mining activities on the island and that needs to be known by everyone. Although, in order for people to understand the history and the environmental impact of copper mining in Cyprus along with the extreme dipole in the environment around the Kokkinopezoula mine (the forest and the crater), we believe that visitors have to experience the site through an architectural complex that encourages and evokes thoughts and feelings. A cold informational museum, in our opinion, is not enough to pass on all the parameters regarding this particular site. After a lot of thinking and designing, we created an Environmental Awareness Center. Video presentation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsCffRXTc3E

The importance of copper in Cyprus and the reference to a "red lake" that exists in Cyprus as a remnant of mining activity on the island, we began to delve deeper into the area of the mining lake. The ores are what paint the water red. The so-called Kokkinopezoula mine, which created the Red Lake, is located in Mitsero in Nicosia province, 28 km from the center. Its activity started in 1953, when investigations showed copper-pyrite deposits at this location. Mitsero was the center of Cyprus's mining industry and its contribution to the social and economic development of the country was enormous. This "wound" of the natural environment is a monument to the mining history of the island. In 1953 the mine operated for the first time, where all the activities were underground. After 1967, the mine was unveiled and this large crater, which was 300m long and 100m high, was created. Many miners lost their lives because of the difficult conditions in the underground tunnels. The crater left behind by the mining work creates an extremely impressive scene. Although we would say that it is a monument to human misuse and destruction of nature, it is nevertheless of great interest. 13
The landscape consists of two main areas: the "artificial" red lake (anthropogenic effect) and the virgin forest of the Troodos Mountains. We certainly didn't understand that at first reading. We detected this dipole with further analysis in the area we intervened. The feelings we had after and during our visit to the area were mixed. The color of the water made the lake look like a big pool of blood, as if the earth itself was bleeding. You think about how many people worked here. Cruel and inhumane. This tough, barren and 'alien' landscape is unique. The outcome of our visit to the site was that we do not know its history, its people, its separate corners, paying attention only to tall skyscrapers and floating marinas. The purpose of the project is to reflect on the visitor, highlighting both the interesting geological structure and the area as a memorial, as well as the interpretation and understanding of the identity of the site, through the visitor's wandering and treatment ofthe landscape as an exhibit. In front of a crater, the obvious idea is a bridge, something hovering, something that would fill the void. But again we were wrong. It took some time to understand what made this point so interesting. The forest, or rather the end of the forest. This strong limit with the pines that stop so abruptly where the crater begins to appear. Following the centripetal axis and perpendicular to the steep end of the forest, we decided that the basic principle of our design would rest on this dipole, which we always understood better. The dipole of the natural (the forest) and the artificial, between the virgin and the anthropogenic. Between life and “wound. On the verge of natural & artificial. After this detailed reading of the area we understood what we should emphasize in our synthetic proposal so that the transition between these two opposite spectacles, the lake and the forest, can be understood. At this point we understood that man effortlessly manages to destroy the environment, but along with his other works manages to protect it. A possible solution to this false human activity, could be the restoration-healing of the area. Tree planting, lake closure or something else that would wipe out the wound. But that was definitely not our goal. 14
15
16
17
What is the architectural interpretation of all these concerns and thoughts? What is this building that would make you understand how a person with his abilities develops his culture, but at the same time can destroy the environment? That a human has the capacity to change everything. Manage to stop the forest or create a huge hole in the earth. To somehow reshape the environment as he wants, depending on his needs, desires or ambitions. Is it really just a building or should we approach the issue in a different way? The basic idea for the composition is the view of the lake for the visitor. How he or she should approach the crater. In our opinion, the lake should not be the first impression but the last. Our second, but equally important, goal is to recognize the contrast in the landscape, something which we think is only achieved experientially and not in an exhibition space. Having these parameters in mind, our design is following the East – West axis, starting from the forest and concluding in front of the lake.
18
The visitor arrives by car from Nicosia using the main road to reach Mitsero village and from there to the entrance of the area. A strategically located parking lot has been created to serve the incoming and outgoing crowd. The visitor, after leaving his vehicle, has at his disposal a small bus, which starts from the parking lot and ends at the entrance of the forest path. This bus runs on a regular basis and serves the entire people visiting the Center. Otherwise if you wish there is access to the entrance of forest path by car, but no parking as it would disturb the natural environment of the forest. Studying more and more the forest we recognized its key points. Two hills and a valley in between.
Two hills and a valley in between. The existing trails gave us the idea of a path through the forest, which would create the beginning of our composition. This would help the visitor experience the forest and thereby reach a "promontory" (overlooking the lake). Our desire to unite these two hills and cross the valley, guided us to create an aerial route between the foliage of the trees. This elevation would offer a different perspective of the forest and intensify the walker's interest. The way we wanted to approach the forest is not the usual, for example cobblestone streets, etc. The visitor, after arriving at the site, begins his / her experience by starting this aerial route, where there are info points, giving information about the flora and fauna of Cyprus.
19
The main idea was to create the "mold", a base that would hold a self-supporting structureskeleton that would not rest on the ground but stand on that “mold and allow the air to pass around it. The second layer we created is that of the skeleton, inspired by mining machinery. Inside the skeleton were placed all the functions of the composition that form the main structure. The basic idea, and probably the one that formed the final synthetic proposal, was the idea of a space inside a space. A semi-outdoor geometrical garden that would give a sense of paradise, something that, even if it was green, would make a huge difference to the forest. Inside this garden would be the Copper Museum surrounded by the trees of Cyprus. The museum was eventually divided into six enclosed units connected by glass bridges, thereby intensifying the alternation of light and shadow. The end of the museum is the "cape", as we call it, an empty space, an enclosed glass box. This part of the building, located at its end, is the only place that allows the visitor to view the lake.
20
As for the design of this semi-outdoor space that hosts all the functions, the central idea was to split it into levels. It is divided into two basic levels. The first level is the ground level where the trees grow and where the copper museum would emerge (just like the copper mining procedure) and the second level, the grate. This grate, corresponding to the path in the forest, is floating above the ground level and is pierced by the trees. Thus, the visitor never touches the ground, but only hovers above it. At this main level the visitor circulates the foliage of the trees closer to his height, while at the center of the composition an opening is created to increase the presence of the trees inside the skeleton and to find a ladder to the level of the soil. At the ground level, the visitor comes into direct contact with the natural element as well as with the greenhouse entrances (windows) that traverse the skeleton. Finally, the complex has museum workshops, a multipurpose hall, office spaces as well as a cafĂŠ - restaurant with an unlimited view of the lake, all outside of the main building and the mold.
21
22
23
A special addition to the space that, in our opinion, has shaped and managed to create the contrast, is the addition of two greenhouses adjacent to and outside the main volume. These greenhouses host tropical trees and plants and manage to show the human ease in modifying the environment. The ability of humans to put tropical plants among pine trees. The greenhouses also have showcases that interfere with the central skeleton, capturing the curiosity of the visitor about what lies behind the walls. The first greenhouse hosts a tropical environment, while the second one hosts a tropical desert environment.
24
25
26
27
The museum is dived into 6 different units that are connected with glass bridges. The exhibits are separated chronologically and by the procedure of the processing of copper, in Cyprus. On the outside the units are made out of concrete and on the inside are designed with copper as the main material, with custom showcases that remind the holes in the earth, caused by the mining procedures. Each unit has its own entrance, giving the visitor the freedom to enter and exit on his or her own will. Some units have exhibits on the ground level and are accessible from that level, while others use that extra height for mechanical installations.

After determining and evaluating the critical conditions of the project, the idea of creating a garden and less of a building that would be imposed with its architecture, was born. Without underestimating the intention of designing a modern and innovative, distinctive and original building, the heart and identity of it is transferred out of it into an environment that is essentially dedicated to remembering a person, and provokes reflection and feelings through the beauty and power of nature.

The main idea could therefore be framed as “a research building for life and a dedicated garden of memory”. The building was built around a northern garden and turned towards him, with the building block occupying the south and west side of the plot. The whole environment was designed and a natural embankment in the north was created from the excavation grounds and for protection from the traffic of the roundabouts. The embrace of the building created three wings. To the east, the entrance and reception wing, on the main inflow side, coming from the University, but also from where the presence of the building is perceived.

South, the second and main arm with the main research labs and the management floor. While in the third to the west, the two other research units, and the researchers, are placed in the immediate vicinity. A shell was created that surrounds the building, providing protection to the south, west and east. The shell creates a perimeter semiopen gallery that provides beneficial shading to the building and its immediate surroundings. The roof of the shell is planted providing the corresponding environmental benefits and extending the green area of the design.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U55c8FwY67k The specific project was aimed at the various requirements, functions and aspects of an architectural project that have to be considered in a co-ordinated way and to be met in harmony. It also aims at managing professional - like conditions. The large scale of the project, the increased demand for critical choices and presentations, the limited working time, are parameters that are similar to an architectural competition and require intelligent prioritization and time management.
Team members: Maria Georgiou, Danae Mauridi, Florentina Tsakiri, Iakovina Christoforou REDESIGN OF THE HARBOR OF LAVRIO DUTH
The work is structured in three phases: 1. General Regulatory Plan (1/500) 2. Editing the proposals in a characteristic selected part of the set (drawings 1/200) 3. Detailed plans (appropriate drawing scales) in representative sub-sectors (facades, open-air zones, interior, etc.).
PANAGIOTIS KOKKORIS, THEONI XANTHI
The project calls for the exploration of a new model of comprehensive urban regulation under the pressure of continuous rapid changes in the economic, social and productive conditions of our country. Within the framework of the three aforementioned objectives, student groups are called to prepare a comprehensive proposal for a complex design (architectural synthesis, urban planning, environmental design, construction, social and, of course, economical managment) of an extensive urban area.

REDESIGN OF THE HARBOR OF LAVRIO
Our synthesis could be described as a theme park. The great expanse and history of our region has prompted us to its partition. Initially, the cultural background of the old factory and mines in this region was a key factor in creating a cultural area, not in the form of the “soulless” museum, but by creating spaces (interior and exterior, a museum at the center of the composition and an outdoor pedestrian road) that are interactive. So, alongside the visitor’s education, there is the empiric experience, which we consider more important. Also, in the cluster of cultural sites, we created a building that is linked to the main museum, used for periodical exhibitions, as well as a sports academy for rowing, near the coastal front of the composition.
50
In addition, due to the location of the plot, our goal was to unite our design with the port of Lavrio and the terminal suburban station of Attica. Due to intense touristic and commercial activity, we decided that a complex of small shops and services, linked with the city’s activities, would be a key economic core for the region. Lastly, we took in consideration the importance of harbors for the promotion of culture and in combination with our intention to create a large green space, we used a site from the old factory of Lavrio as well as the rest of the outdoor space and we designed a theme park of plants. By region you can meet all kinds of trees, bushes and spices. We imagined it as a gathering point of all the maritime trade routes, which brings together colors, aromas, and even flavors from around the world.

The studio course focuses on a landscape, rich in thermal mineral springs, at a remote mountainous area of the Prefecture of Xanthi, near the borders between Greece and Bulgaria. The site becomes a kind of platform to devise structures and also the physical context for analysis and design of special facilities. A key aim of the design studio consists the concept of an holistic integration of architecture into the specific natural environment, associated with the existence of thermal mineral springs in the area. Facilities: thermal spa with a small scale accommodation infrastructure / hotel. The constructions demand a gradual "dilution" to the landscape and their transformation into a "walk-passage"

THERMAL BATHS
The synthetic theme is designed and organized around the region of hot springs in the remote mountainous area of "Thermes" of the Prefecture of Xanthi near the border between Greece and Bulgaria. The main concern of the project is the design and integration into the particular environment of the site of the facilities related to the existence of hot spas in the area. It is a complex that in a few words emerge from the earth like the thermal water of the mountain.
STUDENT PROJECT
In particular, the main building, which includes all the bathing facilities together with their common rooms, the reception area, the library, the administration offices, the restaurant and a large communal space that functions as a common area and as a possible exhibition space. The main objective was the design of a building, which from the level of the road will not block the visual, and for this reason all the functions were placed on a vertical axis, splitting the earth. At the upper levels we find the "dry" communal areas (reception, library, reception area, office) and on the roof there is the restaurant so that it can also be visited individually, without necessarily entering the whole bath complex. At the lower levels are various thermal pools, with various temperatures, as well as other areas of relaxation and pampering.
2018
The hotel facilities are located east of the main building and under a large public square that hosts two large outdoor pools. The rooms with the square create a special relationship and facade due to the engravings that we created. The basic communication of the rooms with the basic volume is made by the level of the bathing facilities, through an underground corridor. At the far end of the composition a balcony was designed as a retreat and a place of self-concentration.

ARCHITECTURAL CENTER IN XANTHI
The Architectural Center is located in the city center and specifically in the area of the Governor’s Square, close to the Central Square. The East-West axis of the plot has a three meters difference in its altitude, amongst other contradictions.
2016
STUDENT PROJECT
A rather dominant opposition is the strong presence of the urban fabric on the western front, in Konstantinos Benis Street, in contrast to the cultural ring of the eastern front and the strong presence of the park and the natural element. In the already existing empty land the pedestrian accesses are made mainly by the diagonals of the plot serving a short bypass of the two roads.
60
Considering the above and based on further analysis of the area where the plot is located, we came up with the basic idea for the design of the Architectural Center in Xanthi. Our main intension was to intensify the cultural ring, thus we turned the building on the axis of the Governor’s Square.

Τhe structure of the building is like an embrace that leads the walkers directly in the building, as an extension of their main course. This turn to the Governor’s Square, in combination with the square-platform we created at the entrance of the building, manages to harmonize and unify the exterior space of the building with the surrounding environment.
62
The structure of the building also helps to bring the greenery from the park to the plot. At the same time, the basic idea for our solution is the suspension of the building in some sections, so as to maintain the existing paths of pedestrians joining the two streets. In this way we also do not block the visual contact with the greenery from the level of 0.00 to +3.00.
The functions of the cultural center are divided into different levels, leaving the museum on the upper floors and the other functions at +3.00 and -1.00, in order to allow to them to be open regardless of the visiting hours of the museum, as well as their direct access from the busy city side at 0.00. The independent character of 0.00 level is increasing the square, created by the use of pylons.

This topic identifies the character of the school as an “open school” to the community. The concept of an open school has been the field of wide-ranging questioning over the past decades - international and in our country, which aimed at redefining the general role of the school. This questioning aims to the enrichment of school functions and activities beyond the “narrow” educational, so the school space turns into a dynamic unit for the neighborhood, the village and the city.

Analyzing the area around the plot, we came across a natural landscape with intense green and water. This could only play a decisive role in our design. Our first wish was the creation of a primary school, which will be harmonized in its environment and become one with it. We wanted to create two central yards, each of which would have a smaller scale. The building is easily accessible either by ramps or by natural hills.
At the same time, however, the ramps, due to orientation, also act as filters between the school and the public roads. As for the main body of the school, the purpose was to create a corridor as a space for living and not just a corridor with pre-arranged rooms. For this reason, the library is located along the corridor with scattered spaces of reading, as well as some rooftops of the classes, which create lofts.

These courtyards are planted with big trees to provide shade. Between the two main yards, centrally, there is the canteen, which has both external and internal access. Finally, at the level of the classrooms, there is an outdoor space like a kiosk, which acts as an entrance from the southern pedestrian street, as a space for interactive lessons and activities, and as an open-air, exteerior relaxation space of the building.
DUTH
The corridor and the lofts, also aim at an internal space of play for children during breaks. The classrooms are all south oriented in the main building, with five metallic “cubes” attached to it. In the three of these “cubes” are the administration offices, while the other two are the workshops of visual arts and experiments and the environment. Although the above spaces are all interiors, there are many exits to the yards scattered throughout the complex.

In a city with a deep history on cultivation, processing and trade of tobacco, main theme was the design of the Tobacco Museum in Xanthi.

On a very small plot, with two preserved walls of an old tobacco warehouse, we faced intense challenges in designing a building that will harmonize and highlight the memories of the old building. Our intention was to create a single bulk in which the museum functions (permanent and periodical exhibitions, multipurpose hall amphitheater, educational spaces, library, administration offices) evolved, while our goal was to let the walls of the old tobacco warehouse remain as exhibits in an open air , public and accessible space for everyone.

Thus, in the space surrounding the walls, we created an open-air small amphitheater, utilizing the old altitudinal differences that were used by the tobacco warehous. At the same time, as we believe that museum uses will not be a daily visit by the citizens, we designed a cafeteria and restaurant, keeping distance from the walls so that they are not damaged or destroyed, but within the space they create. That way, a visitor will have the opportunity to experience on a daily basis the glamor of the old tobacco warehouse.

TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE URBAN LANDSCAPE OF KAVALA

The study area constitutes part of the south sea-front of the city, forming a peculiar junction with the urban fabric. In the area there are particularly auxiliary buildings and warehouses. The one year design studio proposes the demolition of the building fabric inside the site, releasing the area for its redevelopment into a single public place, at the same time, transforming it into an environment, designed to be used for cultural events, recreation, soft sporting activities, walking and relaxation. The large oblong building situated at the waterfront exempted from demolition; students asked to manipulate the building envelope and structure, reversing – revealing its key structural components, in order to reshape – transform it into an essentially elevated public space. The study area becomes a kind of a "platform" for the development of structures and configurations; In this context, the key design challenges are: the restoration of the city's relationship with the sea, the visual and functional connection of the study area with the urban fabric, and ultimately the formation of a new identity for the area.

The primary objective of the composition was to create routes in which points of interest are evolved. The main road is a long square, where at the beginning and the end are formed special spaces for aromatic plants placed in the water.
The building cooperates from the south with a solid square of concrete, ideal for city events and exhibitions, while from the north with an amphitheater, combined with a wooden deck system for wandering near the water.
In addition, the interaction of the building with the various paths, offer different visual sightings and views. At the end of a basic course, we designed an observatory of the entire composition as well as the entire city.

We used clean engravings to emphasize the different qualities and character of each space. All over the synthesis there are places of interest and smaller scale stops.
This creates the feeling that the sea has passed behind our intervention, with the exception of a section where a small grove that acts as a green space for the city and two basketball courts were created.
All in all the entire complex acts as a bridge and a coastal pedestrian walk , combining sport activities, exhibitions, outdoor cinema and theater, and a place for relaxation for the entire city of Kavala.

Finally, on the diagonal axis, the common room was placed in the center of the overall composition, as we believe it is the most important clue that gives life to the complex, but also to the whole city.
One key zone, is the "triangle" that is created and there is an "L" shaped-like building that houses the shops, the multipurpose room and the cafeteria.
An important and key factor of the design are the altitudes that are created. They succeed each other, creating meeting places, access areas and greenery.
In the other "triangle" zone, with a new vertical line to the main diagonal axis, are the outdoor cinema and the showrooms.
The combining element of the complex is the roof that connectstheshopsandtheshowrooms, whileatthesame time the centrality of the common room is highlighted.

Our project began with the drawing of the diagonal line of the site, which would also mark the course of a pedestrian crossing the plot. Thus, three zones were created.

STUDENT PROJECT
The thesis focuses on the study and architectural design of a building complex, medium-sized scale intended primarily to cover housing needs of University members (students and guest teachers) and at the same time offer small communal services to the residents of this community.
86
The habitation occurs in atomic or more in collective apartments, small units - cells that will form this hive. It is a complex with particular characteristics that de facto coexist between private and social life in the context of a common life.

The complex consists of three types of apartments (30 square meters for two people, 60 square meters for three people and 90 square meters for four people), each with its own outdoor expansion and also public spaces, from a communal living room that serve as a reading room and as a laundry room, as well as a dorm room with a small mini market that serves the needs of the neighborhood.
2015 - 2016
Our solution focuses on the many different types of space for rest and gathering. Private living quarters, semi-outdoor & semi-open public spaces are lined around a patio that also functions as a public passage through the plot.

All the spaces are located three meters above the patio, at the same level as the access roads from both sides of the plot, which presents this altitude specificity. The facades of the building, although different from each other, are in harmony with the whole and create different canvas, due to the apartments. On the roof, a space with fixed seats, drapes and pergolas was created for the various uses of the students. The dorm room, located outside the main building and in conjunction with the store, are on the front of the main road and have direct access to the main patio so as to serve the city and the complex directly.

ARCHITECTURAL ANALYSIS AND SPACE COMPOSITION II
SMALL CHILDREN'S THEATRE

This is a project on the design of the outer shell and the interior of an existing building and the back exterior space in a creative work place for children. A simple given shell is suggested to focus on the processing and complete study of the site. Thus, the detailed design of the space and the shell is sought in order to serve the requirements of the particular function, as well as the search and clarification of those general and special elements of the design that will give a distinct style to the whole project and will give the desired atmosphere to the suggested space.
Our goal was to create a building that would act as a pole of attraction for the local community. For this reason, in addition to the theatrical workshop, we decided to include in our building a public library, an outdoor exhibition area and an outdoor small amphitheater. Taking into consideration the already existing bearing body, we have defined as our basic layout, in the smallest part defined by the columns, the linear path joining the back exterior space with the pedestrian street, thus creating a public gallery.

This was accomplished by creating a complex library that follows the steps of the staircase that leads to the basement, that will be open during the summer months for outdoor performances. In the basement, apart from the small amphitheater and the public library, there is a public reading room and a small refreshment room, as well as a storage space, private and public toilets (when the theater is not open, the people visiting the library willbe served by public toilets).
The roof was designed so that it could be visited and used for exhibitions or performances, using an external staircase from the pedestrian street and at the same time we considered it a fifth aspect of our entire composition. Thus, with the help of some lines from the floor plans and the facades, it was divided and parts were raised as much as needed to get plantings and other materials (glass, gravel). All three modular levels are accessible both with stairs and with an elevator.

In the rest of the floor there is the space for the performances, the stage, the folding seats, which by means of a special construction can be folded down, by leaving the floor free, when there is no show. The back exterior space was exploited by the creation of a small amphitheater, which ends up to the basement. In the gallery we considered necessary and useful the existence of a public and free library.

CAFETERIA IN CAMPUS UNIVERSITY
The aim of the course is to create a coffee and communal space, within the campus, so that it can be used by the student community on a daily basis. The plot is opposite the Architecture school and it does not show any particular altitudinal differences, but different views, from the two main sides of the plot. On the one hand, a particular ridge of the neighboring mountains, while on the other hand a large field.
AMERIKANOU ELENI, KOSTIS KEVENTSIDIS, PANOS - LOUKAS EXARCHOPOULOS
The design of the project ought to be such that it may be possible to repeat itself at other campus points. Thus, beyond its design, a great deal is given to the use of materials and manufacturing methods. An important requirement is also the creation of a fully equipped space that meets the needs of the students.

The main objective of our project was to gather the students in a place that will be intimate, hospitable and comfortable. That's why we created a gradual immersion in the center of the building. The building is a simple rectangular structure, with a sloping metal roof and large windows, so that there are 360 views of the external environment.

The kitchen is located outside the base volume at the level of the submerged floor. Right outside this kitchen, we created a construction, exploiting the altitude differences, so that it can be used as a bar in two points of the building.

The space inside is furnished with a large tables, beacause we wanted to groupthe students and to aid their socialiazation. Pillows are placed on the steps inside the building to intensify the feeling of familiar environment. In a modern student place, we thought it is necessary to have a space with high-tech computers for study use. We also considered the design of the exterior space, as Greece is a country that is known for its favorable weather. Thus, the altitudinal differences we meet internally, exist and in the external space and a key element is the pergola, under which tables are placed.

Our solution is to convert the particular study area into a cultural attraction and not just touristic one. The main objective was the revival of the existing constructions and the dynamic restoration, their reintegration into today, in a way that addresses the modern man and his needs. Our study area can be seen as the end or the beginning of the complex, so our proposals correspond to this finding. Initially, we suggest creating a wooden pier in the sea, combined with the existing one, so that ships from nearby areas can bring visitors to the spot, helping the general public to get to know the location better. Also on the existing pier we created a ramp for the disabled. Moreover, in order to create an association on the East-West axis, we use the existing cave in the rock through the tunnel. This join is achieved by the small widening of the cave, the installation of an auxiliary grid floor and the creation of a platform to the west of the coast. We consider it to be a strong proposition that will attract many visitors, not only due to the tunnel’s operation, but also because the narrow width of the cave causes a different sensation, and information will be provided through audiovisual means for the minerals processed in the mining complex.
Additionally, in the area where the small buildings - walls, which were probably used to control and record the exported material, we recommend the creation of a canteen. It is the only enclosed space that we propose and is made at that particular point because it is the only space where previously existed buildings. The canteen is a metallic selfsupporting construction and at no point comes into contact with the preserved buildings. It is a small recreation area that combined with a semi-open space created at the level of +3.00 can host workshops during the summer months. The walls at this point are used as monuments and no construction is placed on them. Wanting to create a vertical union between the various levels, we propose a short course with stairs and platforms at different levels and different directions.
This proposal was made because of the different views that the area provides in the opposite directions. Finally, at the level of +15.00, following the shape of the rock we create some seats, a sheltered resting place for the end of the tour at the mining complex. Also, at the same level as the landing ladder, we recommend repairing its damaged parts. In conclusion and on the basis of our proposed solutions, we wish to use the original elements as monuments of technical culture, to create a walk that allows the visitor to discover the complex, enjoy the natural landscape but also learn about the history, the significance of the complex and the role of the particular area for the loading and unloading of the ore.

The design is made at a registered site for Kavala, the lighthouse of the Panagi. It is an outdoor space with very small dimensions. At the end of the historic wall there is a unique view, both to the sea front of the city, from which it looks from above and the traditional settlement in the Hersonissos of Panagia, which grows around it. The aim of our composition is to preserve the existing lighthouse and its surrounding space. So we raise another pole of attraction and protect a place closely linked to the city itself. The public open space that we propose consists primarily of an intermediate reception area, a linear path that functions as a transitional space from the road to the formed public space and at the end it develops into a vertical union with the sea. On its extension, we find a small-scale square where, in the center of this area, we find the lighthouse. The lighthouse is open and accessible to the public as it also acts as a living space. Continuing the linear course there are the constructions we face in front of the wall, which create points-viewing platforms open to the sea front and the city and achieve the vertical union with the sea. We create a space of quiet relaxation and contemplation.
