Hopping into Summer Eggs have been viewed as symbols of new life and fertility through the ages. It is believed that many ancient cultures used eggs during their spring festivals. Many traditions and practices have formed around Easter eggs. The coloring of eggs is an established art, and eggs are often dyed, painted, and otherwise decorated. Eggs were also used in various holiday games: parents would hide eggs for children to find, and children would roll eggs down hills. These practices live on in Easter egg hunts and egg rolls. The most famous egg roll takes place on the White House lawn every year. In one way or another all the customs are a “salute to spring” marking re-birth!

International Egg Coloring Traditions In Mexico, it is traditional to fill colored hollow eggs (cascarones) with confetti. How to Make Confetti Eggs, also known as Cascarones.

Instructions

Festive cascarones are believed to date back to romantic Renaissance days when Italian gentlemen filled emptied eggshells with perfume or cologne and tossed them to women as a sign of affection. Nowadays, children “bump” the fragile eggs on the heads of others and make a wish. If the eggshell breaks and showers the recipient with confetti, it is said the wish will come true.

Tap the wide end of the egg with a paring knife. Use light pressure to avoid cracking the whole eggshell. Continue to tap on the eggshell until you have created a dime-sized hole. Insert the knife into the egg and break the egg’s yolk. Place a bowl under your egg, and poke the egg yolk with the tip of your knife so the egg yolk can drain out.

Decorate your egg with markers and paint. Apply light pressure with your markers and paintbrush and decorate the eggs any way you wish. Consider using glitter or other embellishments to make your Cascarone bold and bright.

Bati Eggsk

v

Clean the eggshell. Carefully run a slow stream of water into the hole and rinse out any remaining egg residue. Repeat if necessary, and gently wipe the outside of the eggshell with a cloth. Allow the egg to air dry.

In the Slavic tradit ions, eggs are writt en on with hot wax, an d then placed into dye baths. Appliqu e techniques are al so used to glue items like sequins onto th e outside of the eggs

Pour two teaspoons of confetti into the hole at the bottom of the egg. Use a teaspoon to insert the confetti, or manually insert the confetti with your fingers. Glue around the edge of the hole and attach tissue paper. Cut out a 2-inch design, such as a circle or star, from the tissue paper. Attach the tissue paper to the glue surrounding the hole.

Mad about Mint!

looking at the latest trends of the season

We are going crazy with new wedding trends using mint in your color scheme for a spring wedding. Mint weddings are fresh, fun, and a great way to go with either a modern or vintage wedding theme. The color mint was huge on the runway at the fashion shows this year. You’ll see this soft, soothing color on save the dates, wedding invitations, flowers, Bridesmaids Dresses and wedding decor.

To make the theme more than just the color, mint will also make its way into signature wedding cocktails (think mojitos), cakes and cupcakes, centerpieces, and wedding favors. Why the sudden like for mint? The vintage trend has brought mint green back to the forefront as it was the color of choice for many home and personal items in the 1940s and 1950s. Pair the mint color with lemon yellow for a beautiful, fresh color palette. Either way, mint is a very romantic color and we love this trend! Incorporate mint into your Cake topper, Mint dress and a Mint wreath. Then take it a step further with your Hair piece, Mint tassle, Hair halo, Favors and table decor. Add Mint earrings for that final touch. The mint headpieces make a real statement! We can’t help but love the romantic nature that mint has. Both gold and silver pair nicely with mint for a very elegant wedding look. Brides took to the color quickly, but not just with apparel. Mint purses and jewelry were also hot. We’ve noticed more of our brides using mint colors at their weddings than in previous years. We see mint bridesmaid dresses, mint décors, and a greater use of mint colored flowers and greens in bouquets, centerpieces, corsages and boutonnieres. We think mint is a refreshing color, but we also find it very soft and soothing. It will be interesting to see if the color stays trendy through the fall and winter months, and if it will continue to be hot for spring.

Wedding Etiquette...Do’s and Don’ts You Won’t Be Serving Alcohol

You’re Having a Cocktail Only Reception

Even though your choice of what to serve really doesn’t require an explanation, it’s not a bad idea to give your guests a heads up about alcohol. The best way is by word of mouth, ask your family and your wedding party to pass along the information as they would any other details about the wedding and reception. You could also casually mention it to guests with a simple “By the way, there won’t be any alcohol served at the reception.” If your guest list is large or you prefer to let people know in writing, add a discrete note on the reception page of your wedding website: “Please know that alcohol will not be served.” The same wording could also unobtrusively appear on any insert you include with your reception invitation, such as directions to the venue or other logistics, but this should be a last resort. Never include it on the wedding invitation itself.

Regardless of how formally you are constructing your invitations, adding the word “cocktail” before “reception” is the most straightforward way to let your guests know that dinner will not be served. Traditional wording might read something like: “A cocktail reception will follow the ceremony” or, more casually, “and afterward for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.” The start time for your reception will also help clue in guests. “Set the event during cocktail hours that can be 4 to 6 p.m. and anticipate that it’s going to be a shorter reception than usual.” Whatever time you choose, wrap things up, including the cake cutting, no later than 8 p.m. so people will still have time for dinner.

Assigning Seats and Tables

Not Having Meat at the Reception

Open seating may seem as if it would be fun and spontaneous, but guests shouldn’t have to feel like they’re the new kid in the school cafeteria. You don’t want them to be stranded, without somewhere welcoming to sit, or rushed into claiming territory.

Whether you avoid animal products, alcohol, carbs, or anything else, “your wedding is not the time to try to convert people to your way of living”. The trick is to be true to your beliefs without making guests feel deprived. For example, rather than serving tofu, or other unfamiliar foods, consider a non-meat pasta.

That said, you needn’t micromanage -- only the most formal receptions require place cards at each setting, says Grace Crompton, a Florida wedding planner. Assigning only tables and letting guests choose their chairs is perfectly acceptable. Should you decide to forgo table assignments, remember that your guests will take longer to seat themselves. And you’ll need to account for more settings than number of guests, since it’s inevitable that there will be incomplete tables (for example, six guests seated at a table of eight).

Offer a choice of vegetarian and non-vegetarian entrees. We can recall one bride whose parents wanted to serve a kosher meal, although only a handful of guests required it. The bride hired a second, kosher caterer to prepare that food. “There is usually some sort of middle ground.”

Wined

Dined!

First and foremost, don’t fall victim to advice that takes you into a wine that you know you won’t like. If you absolutely know you don’t like dark red wine, don’t buy it. Don’t drink it. Instead, figure out what you enjoy in a wine. Select wine based on the “weight” and texture of your meal. The basic rule when choosing a wine with these criteria is this: the heavier the meal, the bigger your wine needs to be to stand up to the food. So red meats and foods with heavy sauces generally need big red wines such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot or syrah. Big reds and buttery California chardonnays also go well with sauces and pastas that are heavily-buttered or creamy. Lighter meals take lighter and more subtle flavors of wines. Thus, chicken or turkey will often be paired with white wines such as riesling or gewurtztraminer. But should you wish to eat red with a lighter meal, think about choosing a pinot noir or an Italian red like a chianti.

why not try a wine cocktail?

What You Need: 3 oz Fume Blanc / Sauvignon Blanc , 3 oz Cava, 1 oz cucumber water, 1/2 oz lime juice, 2 teaspoons sugar, pinch coarsely chopped mint.

Cucumber wine cocktails are refreshing and savory. Mint and lime add sour to balance the drink. This drink is not for everyone because it’s not sweet. However, if you’re reading this your mouth is already watering.

About our Chef: Executive Chef Jeff Banks recently moved to Fort Lauderdale from Scottsdale, Arizona. Preparation: Saute shrimp in jerk-seasoned butter, rum and squeeze of lime. Toss with mango salsa and garnish with mint. Serve with rice.

for the love of food...

besides designing Austin Scarlett has a love for cooking. We asked him to share one of his favorite recipes with us? “I love to cook when I have time, it’s true. My favorite time to cook is over the holidays.” Here is my English trifle recipe (The amounts differ depending on the size of your trifle dish. I usually like to count on having at least 3 layers)

ingredients preparation

Fresh ladyfingers, Custard (I make my own from a secret family recipe but you can use store bought as well), Raspberries, Sugar, Raspberry Jam, Fresh whipped cream, Sherry.

Start by sprinkling a small amount of sugar over the raspberries, stir it all together and set it aside to let the natural juices come out of the fruit. Once it sits for about 10-15 minutes mix the fresh raspberries together with the jam. Begin the layering by laying down enough ladyfingers to cover the bottom of your dish. Drizzle with sherry and then add a layer of custard. Next spoon some of the raspberry mixture and spread it out to cover the custard. Finish the layer with whipped cream. Repeat until the dish is full. The last layer of whipped cream can then be garnished with berries and some fresh sprigs of mint.

Above some of the most beautiful landmarks in Florida, overlooking crystal blue waters, you can...

plans...

Whether you’re a couple looking for a very special wedding venue, or renewing your vows, Florida Bride Magazine has sought out the perfect historic waterfront locations for your matrimonial event. Just imagine having your wedding at one of these unusual and very impressive venues. Take it to the next level! Carry the nautical theme throughout your ceremony and reception. When it comes to a true nautical themed wedding, think sailboats, lighthouses, Adirondack chairs, anchors, and beach items such as starfish and sand dollars. And when it comes to the color scheme, think blue, green and white with a hint of khaki mixed in here and there. With all that in mind, we set out on a quest to find some of our favorite nautical themed locations.

Ponce Inlet Lighthouse Ceremonies of up to 30 minutes in duration may be performed in a designated open grassy area in view of the Lighthouse during regular hours of operation. This location has been selected to provide the wedding party and their guests with the maximum amount of semi-privacy and seclusion possible. After the ceremony, photographs may be taken throughout the grounds with the understanding that the public may not be prevented from the use of any museum location, or asked to step aside in order for photographs to be taken.

St. Augustine Lighthouse The Saint Augustine Lighthouse & Museum dates back to 1824 when it became Florida’s first lighthouse as a Spanish watchtower. This 16th Century lighthouse with its lawn full of beautiful oak trees creates a beautiful backdrop for your ceremony. The Anastasia Gallery can be rented out as well, and will comfortably seat eighty guests for dinner, but has a maximum capacity of one hundred and fifty people. This is a very popular venue, and sometimes reservations must be made a year in advance, so if you are planning a wedding quickly, this may not be the best option.

Whether you are having a destination wedding, a wedding near the sea or your wedding will be inland, but you long for the sea, a nautical theme wedding can be a splash! You can go all traditional with navy, white and a touch of gold, or you can go with different shades of blue, and add some silver. So, let’s raise the anchor, hoist the sails and off we go with some nautical wedding inspiration! Nautical is a style that is so in right now, everywhere you look you see anchors and stripes. We love the cool classic look of everything nautical. It’s a great style to carry over into your wedding decor. Try blue and white stripes and a pop of turquoise. RAINBOW inspiration Almost all couples want their

wedding to be unique, out of ordinary, far from tradition and most of all, personalized. One of the themes that can make your wedding modern and extraordinary is the rainbow theme. The rainbow brings a positive energy. The 7 different colors of the rainbow represent different meanings and symbols about life. Choosing for a rainbow-themed wedding is not very difficult and can really be fun to prepare. The rainbow colors can be applied in wedding favors, bridal shower invitations, flower bouquets, bridesmaids’ dresses and shoes, foods, accessories and decorations.

Couples can be very creative in their wedding favors or bridal shower favors. Whether they choose

for DIY or not, they can always incorporate the rainbow theme. Most stores offer personalized wedding favors wherein couples can customize the color, design, or the message of their wedding favors. So all they have to do is to make sure that they choose 7 different colors for their personalized wedding favors or bridal shower favors to stick to their rainbow theme. Each bridesmaid can wear one of the rainbow colors, but all of them should have one color of shoes only. Their flower bouquets can also match the color of their dress or all of them can use a single color only. Their makeup, hair, and accessories can also have the rainbow theme. The bride, however, can either wear a dress in rainbow colors or she can stick to the traditional white/ivory wedding dress. Her bouquet can also be in different colors.

Wedding cakes are another wedding essential that can

have a rainbow color. A 7-layer cake can have different colors in each layer. Though there are various ways on how to apply the colors of the rainbow in cakes. Try adding some rainbow-colored cupcakes and candies on the tables. Other wedding essentials where couples can apply the rainbow theme are the groom’s men socks, paper lanterns, decorations, table cloth, and a lot more. A rainbow-themed wedding can be fun, playful, and colorful.

Kathy Ireland

from SuperModel to SuperMogul

Florida Bride Magazine had the distinct pleasure to interview Kathy Ireland about her new bridal line from Mon-Cheri. Kathy feels blessed to work in an industry filled with such wonderful people.

Q. A. Q.

A.

You have been named one of 50 most famous people in fashion. How does that make you feel? That is so humbling. I feel blessed to work in an industry and be mentored by such wonderful people. My parents instilled in me from the time I was a child that people are more important than profits. The Brand bares my name and the results show. I thank Elizabeth Taylor for giving me a new set of eyes to see things through with her philantropy. Prince Edward and Windsor Castle taught me the importance of quality and attention. I was looking at the Mon Cheri 2013 Spring/Summer bridal gown and formalware collection. There were so many beautiful designs, but one of my favorites was The Caryle. I loved the detail on the gown. Every bride has their favorite gown, and knows that is the one she wants to walk up the aisle in. They seem to beam when it’s the right gown! How did you choose the gown you wore on your wedding day? I got married in 1988 and was inspired by Princess Dianas’ gown, it was beautiful, but my sleeves were bigger than my head! I loved it though, it was very Cinderella. We rented an estate for the reception, but no one was allowed to go into the house. We had to have porta potties outside, and I could hardly get into them with my gown. That personal experience is what triggered my desire to service brides. I want a brides wedding to be a great experience, and to be beautiful every step of the way. I love it when they are direct with me, that is the key to our success. I love the people on our team. We know we have strengths and weaknesses, but we focus on our strength. When I was a model I would get teased. They would say why don’t you buy expensive clothes or valet your car. I have people around me that have strengths I don’t have, they have an extraordinary eye to all manufacturing, it is a huge collaboration. There are people that have been in busines for generations, some of them in the bridal industry. still in business today. Any accolades go to the entire team, they translate what I envision.

Q. A.

Every bride wants to look her very best on her wedding day. Your new line of skincare Stemage sounds very exciting. Tell us a little about it. Twenty years ago I began working on skin care with scientists, when I met them I found them very interesting. Over the years, I have tried everything on my skin. The foundation of Stemáge is rooted in scientific research, the science involved is phenomenal. Scientists, doctors and researchers have found powerful, natural and naturally sourced ingredients that treat the appearance of aging. These ingredients help to improve overall skin health. The concentrated and rich set of natural ingredients help to restore and moisturize, promote skin and collagen health, tighten skin, reduce wrinkles, improve elasticity and skin tone, decrease pore size and enhance smoothness of your skin to create a more youthful, illuminating appearance. I am excited for people to experience it! Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2013 ♥ www.florida-bride.com 33

Kathy Ireland Q. A.

from SuperModel to SuperMogul

Everyone knows how much Elizbeth Taylor loved jewelry. Was there a special moment with her that you would like to share?

Q. A. Q. A.

I was surprised when I first met her. She was so genuine and put me at ease from the beginning. She continues to inspire me with lessons from heaven. She was always teaching, giving in such a gentle way. When she spoke it was very profound, she taught me many life lessons. When you talk about jewelry, her personal collection would put Pirates of the Caribbean to shame! We had so much fun with it when she took it out. She had Books about jewelry from three thousand years ago. She would turn the jewel around and look at it from every angle, and taught me to look at it from the inside out. She had such great love and courage. She found needs in life larger than herself. The Elan Luxury Collection of engagement rings are gorgeous. Do you have any advice for our grooms when they are choosing a ring for their future bride? Yes, pay attention and be alert, ask questions and really listen. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you can’t get the information from your love, talk to her mother or girlfriend. A really good cut is going to sparkle. Look at the ring, she will know that you put a lot of thought into it. A wonderful and special surprise would be to inscribe a note or a date on the inside of the ring. Will Mon Cheri be coming to Florida? I feel blessed to be a part of the Mon Cheri line. The team has such an extraordinary eye to detail. We are always continuing to work with retail partners, and would love to build a relationship with them in Florida. The Mon Cheri bridal gown collection offers a blissful return to elegance. With superb attention to detail, the wedding dresses provide breathtaking bridal gowns in diverse styles, fabrics and colors. Whether a bride is a modern progressive or a classic traditionalist, you’ll find the wedding dress or bridal gown of your dreams. In Florida we have a lot of destination weddings. I know that you have Kathy Ireland destination weddings in Hawaii and California. Do you have any plans to have a location here?

Q.

Q.

We would love to have a destination location in Florida. Our goal is to have them all over. I see you have published 6 books, some of them being Real Solutions for Busy Moms, Advanced Sports Fitness, An Angel called Hope, Real Solutions for Busy Mom’s Devotional and Powerful Inspirations which I read and really enjoyed your openness. Q. A. Q. A.

I watched the movie “Twice Upon a Christmas” over the holidays, and it is a wonderful family movie. The movie was filmed in Vancouver and it just so happened that it was during a record breaking heat wave! The snow had to be artifically made with potato flakes. My children were with me and really enjoyed it, and I actually got to get married in it. In closing, do you have anything you would like to say to our couples beginning their lives together. Sometimes there is so much excitement around a wedding, so many distractions. Keep your perspective and balance, and don’t worry so much about striving for perfection or you can loose some of the joy. Don’t get side tracked and savor every moment, focus on the marriage and make it your dream.

from the editor:

Kathy Ireland’s design career came at the age of four selling painted rocks from her little red wagon. She could still do that today and they would be a big hit! I recently watched the movie Kathy starred in “Twice Upon a Christmas” which seems to fit her so well. It is about someone who is searching and knowing there is so much more out there. This seems to epitomize Kathy Ireland. Always exploring, going on a new adventures ones that we can all join her on. Continue to inspire us, it has been a pleasure. We at Florida Bride magazine wish you health, happiness and continued success and a very Happy Birthday!

TIME FOR SOME SERIOUS BONDING

Who doesn’t know this infamous figure? With his taste for the finer things in life, it is

Grooms

not uncommon for him to be sporting a tuxedo while he saves the world! However, there is somethng a bit uncommon in this picture and that is James Bond sporting a Midnight Blue Tuxedo. Tom Ford, one of the biggest names in mens fashion in America has a very conservative edge when it comes to formal wear. He tends to stick with basics and is known to succeed in that endeavor. You may be asking why a designer that is known for being conservative when it comes to black tie attire, would place James Bond in his very first blue tuxedo? We have a very good answer for that question. Midnight blue is an appropriate substitution for black in black tie attire, and is actually considered by many to be MORE formal than black. Under certain lights, black tuxedos may take on a greenish hue, while under these and other lighting conditions, midnight blue looks blacker than black therefore making it more formal than black! Adding a bit of blue to his wardrobe places this year’s Bond as the best dressed Bond yet. To get the look try the Midnight Blue “Maxwell” by G. Alexander. So, how can you get this look for your upcoming wedding? We have all the tips for your starring role in your Bond themed wedding.

What type of cufflinks does James Bond wear? In the movie “SkyFall (2012),” James Bond (Daniel Craig) wears Tom Ford mother of pearl cufflinks with his tuxedo. The cufflinks can be spotted on the SkyFall film posters. He wears Tom Ford cylinder cufflinks in the opening scenes in Turkey and in the movie Casino Royale he sported S.T. Dupont cufflinks.

The Sunglasses James Bond wouldn’t be seen outside without his Tom Ford Marko TF144 sunglasses. Daniel Craig even wore them on the film set between shoots. He was spotted wearing them while filming action scenes in Turkey.

His Car “Bond’s car was his only personal hobby. One of the last of the 4.5 litre Bentleys with the supercharger by Amherst Villiers, he had bought it new in 1933 and had kept it in careful storage through the war. Bond drove it hard and well and with an almost sensual pleasure. It was a battleship-grey convertible coupé, which really did convert, and it was capable of touring at ninety with thirty miles an hour in reserve.” In 1963, James Bond, then played by Sean Connery was introduced to his silver Aston Martin DB5 in the 1964 film “Goldfinger.” One of Bond’s first non-British cars: a 1995 Atlanta Blue Metallic, Q-Branch equipped BMW Z3 with Beige Nappa Leather interior and a 1.9 Litre 16-valve four-cylinder engine. The car can be seen twice in the 1995 movie “Goldeneye.” The brand new model was fully equipped with weaponry as well as other refinements.

36 Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2013 ♥ www.florida-bride.com

His Timepiece An Omega watch is the focus in a lingering wrist shot in an opening scene in “Skyfall”. Watches have played an important part in 007’s inimitable style cachet since Sean Connery first portrayed the character in the 1962 film “Dr. No.” Omega has equipped 007 with a Seamaster wristwatch in every film beginning with “Goldeneye” in a 17-year partnership with the Bond production company, Eon, “Skyfall” is no exception. There was a stir online when it was disclosed earlier this year that the secret agent would appear on screen wearing both a Seamaster Planet Ocean — a staple in Bond films since “Casino Royale” — and a Seamaster Aqua Terra Mid Size Chronometer. The Aqua Terra is a somewhat dressier watch and consequently appears throughout the film as an accompaniment to Bond’s more formal attire. This decision was the personal choice of Daniel Craig, who owns an Aqua Terra and asked to wear it.

Shaken not Stirred The Vodka Martini actually appears forty one times in the books and movies. Gin or undetermined types of Martini come in with twenty one appearances. The celebrated “shaken not stirred” line appeared for the first time in the book Diamonds Are Forever published in 1956 but wasn’t in fact used by James Bond. His first use of the line didn’t come until the book Dr No arrived in 1959. Sean Connery was the first movie Bond to use the line in Goldfinger (1964). James Bond’s preferred Martini recipe was spelt out in the book Casino Royale (1953). It read; “Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon-peel”. In fact, this was the only occasion James Bond has been noted drinking a vodka and gin mix.

AND OF COURSE A LITTLE bring on the bond girl bridesmaids... Transform your Maids into Bond Girls!

FemaleB O N D I N G

Skyfall opened in full force and just like the explosive set pieces and Daniel Craig’s charms, the Bond girls dress this year worn by french actress Bérénice Marlohe is dazzling. One particular outfit, a mesh and crystal-encrusted gown worn by Marlohe, took as much work to create as one of M’s famous gadgets. Award winning costume designer Jany Temime described how she made the dress specifically for the character. ‘We wanted as small a waist as possible, and at the neckline we made it as naked as possible.’ Bérénice said of her dress: ‘To create the character, the transformation is completed with the dress.’ You can transform your bridesmaids into Bond Girls with these Tony Bowls designs for todays modern Bridal party. Keep your colors in black and white and add a splash of red or silver to finish the look.

THE ing2o’s r a ro THE era

trends

We agree that 2013 wedding trends will bring many rocking roaring 1920s weddings into the world. The style trend began in 2012 but looks like it will hold steady, only growing in the next year. And what is not to love. Fabulous things can be done with the wedding theme and we have got some photo inspiration from our friends at nbarrett photography to prove it! nbarrettphotography.com

The 1920’s is the decade when fashion became more exciting and attractive. Women deserted the former constricting and modest clothing of former years and developed a style of their own. This explains why our modern era is inspired so much by this time period.

Because the 1920’s were such a prosperous era and social customs became more relaxed, clothing styles reached a whole new revolution, with fashion styles such as the flapper dress and extravagant hats and headpieces. These styles make for beautiful and fun wedding inspirations!

JC and Rochelle met through mutual friends at a Christian Business Leadership Convention. The first time she saw him he gave his personal testimony on stage at a singles seminar, and she was immediately taken back by the type of person he was. JC is from North Carolina and the bride from Maryland. They ended up reconnecting on Facebook a few months later. That’s where they began just chatting and just checking interests. They started dating immediately after and that’s when close friends, who knew both of them, told them they thought they would be perfect for each other, being so much alike. They were right!

from the bride...

My favorite place has always been Destin, Florida. I grew up vacationing there to see my cousin Cassie, one of my bridesmaids, and always dreamed about living there. When choosing a venue, JC and I wanted to choose a place that would be cost efficient and somewhere where our friends could have a vacation and just have a very relaxing time. I had always been to these big, beautiful, expensive weddings that I have always dreamed about having but once it came down to it, and once I found the right person I realized I didn’t want our wedding to be about that.

the decor...

We love colors! Bright, bold, colorful colors! We realized we would already have white and aqua from the sand and the beautiful clear Crystal water, so we decided to throw in my favorite colors, hot pink and orange! Plus, We wanted a fun, playful flower so we went with pink and orange gerbera daisies.

To add that splash of color we used hot pink, orange and white lanterns to brighten it up as well as pink and orange tablecloths.

My favorite moments of the wedding was our first kiss, when we were announced as husband and wife, my father and daughter dance and the foot washing ceremony. Overall it was truly a dream come true and a total blessing. Our best friends and immediate family were there, it was a morning wedding so we were able to go back to the hotel and change in bathing suits and play all day at the beach. The weather was perfect and there was not a cloud in the sky.

Redefine “ Romance

Austin Scarlett is a New York designer whose work spans the realms of fashion, theatre and pop culture. Recognized for his personally glamorous style almost as much as the breathtaking couture fashions he creates, the world of Austin Scarlett is an enchanted combination of grace and romance. Scarlett ’s designs have been described as “magic” (The New York Times), “worthy of a goddess” (Elle), “technically innovative and esthetically sublime”. Born in Cottage Grove, Oregon, Austin has been designing since he was a child. Following his passion, Scarlett moved to New York as a teenager to pursue his education in fashion design, studying at the Art Students League of New York and The Fashion Institute of Technology. After graduating, he continued to hone his talents in dressmaking as an apprentice fashion archivist at the Museum at FIT, and a theatrical costume design assistant and pattern maker. Austin first gained international recognition for his designs on the original season of Project Runway, winning the programs first challenge ever with his famed corn husk dress. He went on to become one of the youngest designers in history to be named Creative Director of a couture wedding and eveningwear collection in 2006, creating six seasons of gowns for the design house. This fall, Austin launches his first complete gown collection under his own label, debuting his signature line at Neiman Marcus Flagship in Dallas. His collection will walk the runway in October at his inaugural fashion show at New York’s historic Park Avenue Armory. Scarlett exclaims: “A wedding dress is the expression of a woman’s unique beauty at her most treasured moment. I am overjoyed at last to be able to fulfill the dreams of all my beautiful brides!” Florida Bride had a chance to talk to this celebrity designer... When did you realize your desire to be a designer? Designing was always a part of my life. Even before I went to school I was draping with sheets and bed clothes. Is there one memorable moment of Project Runway you would like to share with readers? When we went to the party for the bathing suit challenge I wanted my model and I to be sipping champagne together but she was 16 and wasn’t allowed to be sipping champagne. I had them serve her ginger ale in a champagne flute but forgot to tell the producer that I had done that so the crew got really anxious thinking that they were serving alcohol to a minor!

Were you surprised when they asked you to come back for Project Runway All Stars? It still amazes me how many letters I get from fans of the first season so I wasn’t really surprised that they asked me back for All Stars. The first season still seems like a dream. It was all so surreal. What motivates your designs? Romance How has the experience you had from being on the road with Santino helped you in your current designing? Creating for women across the country who are their own person with a definite character. That is inspiring to me. Did you ever imagine yourself at this point in your career being so young? No, I always imagine myself as much younger. What is your most fun project? I worked with Ted Huffman at the Greenwich music festival which was so much fun. We did a whole Jean Cocteau festival of performances which included designing for the fabulous international cabaret chanteuse Meow Meow and also creating a sculpted unicorn ballet costume. I have always loved the creativity and freedom that comes with designing for the theatre. Its such a fanciful arena where I feel like I can let my imagination run wild. Who are your favorite designers and why? Charles James, the great American couturier, Madeleine Vionnet and Cristobal Balenciaga. They are the most imaginative and technically brilliant designers.

hen you look into her mesmerizing eyes.... you may wonder why they look remarkably familiar. Lindsey is a dead ringer for her gorgeous mother and aunt the Landers Sisters (Audrey Landers and Judy Landers were the “hottest sisters” in Hollywood in the 80s). Lindsey Landers is veritable Hollywood royalty, her father Tom Niedenfuer, was a Los Angeles Dodger baseball player who pitched his way to winning a World Series. Growing up with the spotlight all around her, Lindsey turned to singing and creating music for enjoyment at a very early age. Together with her sister, Kristy Landers, she wrote and performed her first song at age 5 on a children’s television show called “The Huggabug Club”. Kristy and Lindsey, now the front women of the rock band Official Hot Mess, are two fun loving sisters aspiring to make the music they love, and enjoy the crazy ride together; yet they also strive to create their own musical identity for other artists in years to come to follow. Official Hot Mess has shared the stage with The Bangles, Disney Channel’s Mitchell Musso, We The Kings, Plies, Kevin Rudolf, Bubba Sparxxx and Ja Rule to name a few. Lindsey and Justin

Dennis & Tina Uy Brillantes / Binaryflips Photography

Justin and Lindsey were high school sweethearts… they had their first date when Lindsey was 15! They officially started dating at Lindsey’s sweet 16 party and have been inseparable ever since. Justin surprised Lindsey with a weekend getaway trip to an unknown destination. When they arrived at The beautiful Ritz Carlton in Naples she was thrilled! Justin suggested that they leave the hotel room and go for a walk on the beach. They went for a long romantic walk and just as the sun set over the crystal clear blue water, Justin got down on one knee and proposed. When they returned to the hotel there was a path of beautiful rose petals leading to their suite. The entire room was covered in pink rose petals and the bed was decorated with rose petals in the shape of a heart. There was a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. It was like a romantic fairy tale! Keeping with the fairy tale theme, Lindsey & Justin decided to have their wedding in the courtyard at The Ringling Museum of Art the perfect venue to take in the beauty of Florida as well as some of its history. The Ringling Museum is known for its gorgeous art collection, many baroque portraits and even a few Rembrants, perfectly manicured lawns with huge Banyan Trees and an expansive rose garden located directly on the beautiful gulf coast.

Originally, Lindsey was planning to have her wedding colors be baby pink and white, but changed her mind when she realized that Justin (who’s partially color blind) couldn’t tell the difference between the baby pink and white. She decided to go with a brighter, exciting, vibrant fuchsia. The fuchsia color complimented the soft pink exquisite architecture of the courtyard and offset Lindsey’s white ball gown perfectly.

how to get

soft skin {

all over

}

You’ve done a good job protecting your face from winter’s freezing winds and cold temperatures. But what about the rest of your skin, hiding beneath bulky sweaters and warm pants all winter? Now that temperatures are rising your neglected skin is going to be revealed one day soon. We talked to two leading dermatologists for tips on how to get your skin ready for its warm weather debut.

exfoliate

Los Angeles-based dermatologist Dr. Jessica Wu says the first step to getting soft skin all over is to exfoliate. “When dead skin builds up, it gets dry, rough, and flaky,” Wu says. The dead skin cells accumulate over time and can leave your skin feeling rough and dry, but exfoliation removes dead skin cells, dirt, and oil, prepping your skin for smoothness. According to Wu, “some parts of the body—like the face—may respond better to exfoliating products, while others may respond better to mechanical exfoliation,” like scrubbing. For the really hard-to-treat areas like heels and elbows, Wu suggests a good soak in warm water first (excellent excuse for a bath!), followed by a scrub with a rougher surface like a loofah, exfoliating shower gloves, or a pumice stone.

moisturize

After exfoliating, the next step to maintaining that soft skin you’ve just uncovered is to moisturize. By applying moisturizer to freshly scrubbed skin, you hydrate and lock in the moisture that prevents dryness. Exfoliating cleans your skin, but moisturizer maintains the smooth, soft feeling you’re striving for. Be aware that not all moisturizers are created equally: it’s important to read labels before applying cream or lotion. The products you use on your rough heels and elbows should not be the same as the ones you use on face and neck. So if you’re using one moisturizer for your entire body, stop! For sensitive areas like the face, neck and chest, Wu suggests sticking to lighter serums and lotions, especially if those areas tend to be oily. “Heavy, oil-based creams can aggravate acne,” she says.

transition

Just as you transition your wardrobe from heavy knit sweaters to sleeveless cotton sundresses, your skin regimen should shift to accommodate the changing weather as well. Spring’s daily fluctuations in temperature and humidity levels provide a challenge for maintaining soft skin, Dr. Alexiades says. However, if you transition your skincare regimen along with the seasons, you are off to a good start. Dr. Wu suggests switching to lighter products in the warmer months as heavy creams can be uncomfortable and overbearing when it’s warm outside. “Use a lighter lotion or serum instead of a cream,” she says, to keep your skin soft and smooth without becoming oily.

preventing wrinkles secret weapon

Though it may sound unusual, a pair of cotton socks can go a long way when trying to smooth out the rough skin on your feet. After cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing, Dr. Wu says simply putting on a pair of socks will seal that newly created moisture in overnight. If you’re really adventurous, you can even don a pair of socks on your hands as well, just make sure you don’t wear them out of the house!

some surprising ways to prevent wrinkles...

1

Wear sunscreen.

Swap coffee for cocoa.

Even while driving? Ever wonder why age spots are most likely to sprout on the left side of the face? Many people don’t realize that UVA rays, the culprits in most wrinkling, easily penetrate car windows, even on cloudy days, accelerating such signs of aging as brown spots and creases on the left side of the driver’s face. The best defense is using broadspectrum SPF30 sunscreen every day, even in the winter, since the sun’s damaging rays are the number one cause of wrinkles. If you drive frequently, you may also want to invest in tinted car windows, which help block UVA.

3

Sleep on your back.

Ironically, beauty sleep can actually increase wrinkles. Over the years, habitually snoozing on your side or belly, with your face mashed into the pillow, gradually etches “sleep lines” that eventually become permanent. According to a study published in Scandinavian Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Hand Surgery, side sleeping contributes to more wrinkling of the cheeks and chin, while slumbering facedown furrows the brow. Sleeping on your back prevents sleep lines or may even reverse the problem. Getting enough Z’s spurs release of a “youth hormone” called human growth hormone, leading to thicker, healthier skin and fewer lines, says Nicholas Perricone, MD, author of TheWrinkle Cure.

Dietary flavonoids called epicatechin and catechin, found in cocoa, help keep blood vessels elastic, raising nourishing flow to both the skin and internal organs. A German study published in Journal of Nutrition found that after three months, women who drank an epicatechin-rich cocoa drink daily not only had smoother skin, but were also more resistant to sun damage (with less redness and scaling when their skin was exposed to UV light).

Eat more fish and soy.

Salmon, tuna, mackerel and other coldwater fish are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which nourish skin and help keep it smooth, glowing and youthful. Other foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which also help protect against heart disease and stroke, include walnuts, flaxseed oil, and canola oil. Another agedefying food is soy: A 2009 study also found that consuming an isoflavones-rich soy supplement reduced skin wrinkling and increased collagen ng and Avoid squinti percent of the women sses wear sungla studied, after just six outside months of daily use.

Selection & What to Look for

1 2 3 4 5 6

Designate a budget for your cake (as well as all of your other wedding expenses), and schedule your wedding cake consultation at least 6 months in advance.

7

Think what ingredients are available during the seasons: citrus in the fall, strawberries in early summer and chocolate all year round.

Include your groom in the process of choosing the wedding cake; tasting cake is fun! Often the cake is the last impression of the reception; make it a memorable reflection of who you both are. Compose your cake like a dessert. Have fun with flavors and textures. Don’t be afraid to do something different; put your personality into your design! And don’t be afraid of color--pink is the new black! There are many sources of inspiration for your cake your stationery and gown, as well as bridesmaids’ dresses are all a great source of inspiration for the cake designer. Also, let your baker and floral designer exchange information regarding color scheme and floral selection.

Randy is taking his head-to-hem bridal beauty show on the road! He’ll be traveling to eight cities across the U.S. to consult with brides and make their wedding fantasies come true.

abena

head to hem...

A bride from Trinidad and Tobago, Abena wanted her bridal look to have Caribbean flair. In her words, she needed to look fun, light and edgy. For Abena’s blueprint, Randy called for Caribbean sunset tones on her face, long hair with loose curls and lots of sparkle on her veil and jewelry. In a wedding dress with asymmetrical skirt, Abena looked every inch the edgy bride. Her face had a sparkly, Caribbean glow that fused the American and island looks she wanted for her wedding.

mad about mint! Mint weddings are fresh, fun, and a great way to go with either a modern or vintage wedding theme. Either way, mint is a very romantic color and we love this trend! Incorporate mint into your Cake topper, Mint dress and a Mint wreath

frozen sorbet bombe or bonbons? floridabrideblog.com Looking for an alternative to wedding cake that’s not cupcakes or pie? How about a frozen bombe or bonbons? As this June 1955 cover of Gourmet magazine shows, it’s a retro-inspired idea, one that I think updates nicely and that adds a fun kind of fancy to dessert. The one in this issue of Gourmet is a white Curacao mousse in a shell of sweet orange ice, but they can also be made with ice cream, sherbet, or sorbet, and covered in chocolate or meringue. These are the perfect treats that we would love to see at a wedding this year…

Somewhere over the Rainbow... We found some of the prettiest and cutest elements to make a rainbow wedding work for the most sophisticated bride. Now let’s face it, a rainbow wedding can be tacky if not done right. When people begin to add color into their weddings, the obvious places are in the flowers and the Bridesmaids dresses. We absolutely loved the bridesmaids decked out like a prism with bouquets to match. Any talented florist can match the florals to the dress. If done right it can look pretty fabulous. Not to mention, rainbows are a sign of hope and promise. And what fabulous pictures you will have!

Bridal Showers...

Legend says the first bridal shower took place in Europe after a well-to-do girl fell in love with a poor man and her father refused to help pay for their wedding. So, friends and neighbors gathered and offered gifts to the young couple to help them build their new home. By the late 1800’s, the bridal shower had evolved into a more common practice for less wealthy brides, who couldn’t afford a dowry, to set up their new home. We’ve come a long way since then. Today, bridal showers have morphed into a festive way for the bride’s female family and friends to grab some girl time before the Big Day! Guests still “shower” the bride with gifts, often for her new household, but there are also bridal showers that have more specific themes.

the wine tasting shower...

Nothing breaks the ice better than food, so why not make the shower all about exciting peoples’ palates? Wine or cheese tastings encourage guests to nibble, compare, and talk. Local cheesemongers and wine merchants are usually happy to select a tasting menu, but you can also turn to online cheese and wine specialists for reliable, easy, delicious results.

the garden party shower...

Breathe in the cool, fresh smell of the outdoors with a Garden Party shower. To truly delight the senses, decorate tables with fresh flowers or potted mint plants! For breathtaking beauty, hold the shower outdoors in daylight or by candlelight in the evening. Ask guests to bring gifts that the bride can use in her garden. As the final touch of earthy elegance, give guests beautiful flower boxes filled with seeds to plant in their own gardens or pick another garden favor to complement your garden party.

Popular favorites include tiny stacks of ‘silver dollar’ pancakes, mini pizzas and cupcakes decorated to look like clocks.

A girl’s night just isn’t complete without a Pajama Party bridal shower! Everyone arrives in their cutest pajamas bearing gifts to pamper the bride. Whether it’s an exotic beach in Tahiti or a snowy peak in Tahoe, a honeymoon shower celebrates the couple’s honeymoon destination. This is a wonderful theme for couple’s wedding showers as well as bridal showers. Gifts and decorations should follow the theme. DESIGNS

Florida Bride Magazine is always on the lookout for fabulous new designers to introduce to our readers. Bonnie Gall Manning has long been drawn to the work of the Impressionist Movement. “Their skillful use of color, light, and texture, beautifully depicted the scenes of their everyday lives”. For her, the combining of Impressionist Art with high fashion footwear came about unexpectedly. “I painted a pair of dyeable, satin shoes to wear to a wedding in Cooperstown, NY. I chose Monet’s Water lilies to pair with my dress”.

I’ve since created a line of ‘Impressionist Inspired’ designs on twelve different shoes, including matching purses, that crossover from daytime to evening.

I hope to broaden the appeal of this timeless artwork, while providing a bold, new fashion choice.

G rooms

Corner

whats trending for our Grooms this year

for the wedding day!

Mismatched Groomsmen

One of the trends we are starting to love is the mismatched groomsmen attire. It feels much more relaxed and really gives each groomsman a chance to show off their personalities. We like to see it as a fresh new spin on the mismatched bridesmaids idea. We don’t want to completely abandon the matching suits look, but throwing in something different makes it look a little less stiff and more “I’m here to party!”

The Typical Bachelor Party

We are seeing a lot of grooms ditching the typical Vegas bachelor party in favor of something more low-key. They’re thinking more sport, less stripper, and actually planning bashes that allow for quality male bonding. Things like, renting a cabin in Colorado for skiing, golfing and boating in Florida or Arizona, or road-tripping to Austin or Nashville for the music scene.

Your GQ Style

In 2013, We see more grooms becoming interested in the ‘style’ of their wedding portraits, especially their photos with the groomsmen. We have already started to see a transition away from grooms saying “Let’s just line up, get the pictures, and move on” to a desire for a more GQ-style aesthetic to their photos. Grooms are also taking the time to get in touch before the wedding to plan out the photo process, which is something that happened very rarely in the past. They are trying to move away from the old clichés.

Grooms Getting Personal

Apart from the photography side of things, We have seen a trend towards grooms offering something that is personal to them at the reception, whether it be a Scotch tasting bar, a selection of their favorite beers, to a cigar rolling bar. Grooms are becoming more involved in the planning process and are finding outlets in the wedding to show their own interests in personality.

Let the Party Begin! Guys going to a strip club is no longer the norm. A bachelor party today can involve paintballs or end up on a basketball court: How about going to a spa? With so many wonderful ones in Florida they won’t be hard to find. Getting a massage will help you feel refreshed. Yes, the bachelor party is suppose to be about you, however it’s your closest friends that will be there. They are planning it for you to have a great time together. Instead of just a one night free for all try a weekend of camping, kayaking, white-water rafting, sports and paintball. This would be a great stress reliever, and give the bride some time to be with her bridal party and have her bachelorette party. You both will come back with a more refreshed outlook. For those of you who like to gamble host a casino style party, with a bartender and all. Male camaraderie is what it’s all about. Just remember to be safe, if you are going bar hopping rent a van or limo and have a driver take you from place to place. Enjoy your Bachelor party, it’s a time to reminisce with your friends.

Bring on the Boutonnieres: Flowers can have symbolic meaning, either predetermined or personally. Either way, all the flowers in the wedding ceremony should be coordinated, by style, color and symbolism. Keep this in mind when you choose flowers for the groom’s boutonnière. Make a custom Boutonniere to express your Grooms personal style.

How to Pin a Boutonniere

1

Hold the boutonniere by the flower stem with your left hand.

2

Put the boutonniere on the left lapel, about four inches down from the left shoulder of the gentleman wearing it.

3

Hold the pin with your right hand and from behind the lapel, push it through the fabric.

4

The pin should pierce the flower stem. Inserting the tip of the pin through the fabric and back out of the lapel.

5

Tug gently on the stem to be sure it is fastened securely in place for your wedding day photographs! Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2013 ♥ www.florida-bride.com 67
