TussieMussie victorian bouquets with a romantic message
have you heard of the
During the Victorian period, tussie mussies placed inside of a doily were designed to share a message usually between lovers. Each flower or herbal sprig contained a meaning. A young lady, after receiving a tussie mussie from her suitor, would discover the meaning of the bouquet by looking up the flowers chosen for her in a book called the Tussie Dictionary. The young lady could then choose one flower to save as a keepsake or to return to her gentleman caller in response to the message the tussie mussie conveyed. A tussie mussie (also spelled tussy mussy) is a small bouquet (nosegay) of fragrant herbs and flowers and during that period nosegay gardens became popular. Along with popular flowers such as the rose, herbs such as sage, mint, thyme, artemisia and rosemary were also included. It is sometimes referred to as a posy because one of the meanings for posy is “a brief sentiment.” Today, when someone refers to a tussie mussie, they are talking about the small cone-shaped metal vase used to hold the nosegay or small floral bouquet – the bouquet holder. These metal vases have been designed to be easily carried, especially by brides and bridesmaids, and some even come with a small stand so that the bouquet can be displayed as a centerpiece during the reception. Tussie mussies can be given as gifts and are often used as bridesmaids’ bouquets. They can still be crafted with the flower and herbal meanings in mind, creating a fun and fragrant way to share a message with someone else.

flowers are springing up everywhere... A Victorian style tussie mussie is created surrounding one main flower with one or two rings of additional flowers usually in contrasting colors. The stems are then tied with a ribbon or placed in the metal tussie mussie vase. An artichoke, symbolizing peace in many countries, creates an attractive tussie mussie. A tussie mussie continues to be part of most weddings today. Tussie mussies are often carried by bridesmaids, flower girls and even the mother of the bride. Corsages and boutonnieres represent the smaller tussie mussies that had been worn in earlier time periods. Since a tussie mussie does in fact deliver a message, you might want to do some research on the meanings of herbs and flowers beforehand. Your bouquet could begin with myrtle which symbolizes love. Mock orange could be added to signify fraternal affections, or cinquefoil to indicate maternal or parental love. Honeysuckle could be used to show a devoted affection for another. A tulip, especially a red tulip, could be used to tell someone you love them for the very first time since tulip signifies a declaration of love. Passion flower would be used to symbolize a passionate love. Ivy would be used to represent fidelity, marriage and wedded love.
Whatever you want to call it tussie mussie, tussy mussy, or nosegay the tussie mussie has come back into style.

Magic is all about illusion…. and beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. A bride’s wedding day is magical as her dreams come to life in front of her eyes. My 2014 collection is a combination of classic fantasy showcasing the magic of fabrics by hiding and revealing hand beaded laces embellished with jeweled appliques, and sheer netting that reveal just the right parts leaving the rest to imagination. I combined several fabrics to create the richness and dimension including textured laces, Duchess satin, silk charmeuse, silk organza and silk chiffon all embellished with Swarovski crystals.

Say Yes to the Dress: Randy’s Top Trends counts down the 10 hottest bridal trends of the moment, and not just in dresses. Randy’s holistic approach to wedding fashion means you’ll also get tips on beauty and planning to make your dream wedding come to life. Even if you’re a traditional bride, you want to incorporate some contemporary elements into your wedding, classic shouldn’t mean dated. Whether it’s the silhouette of the season (bombshell mermaid), the must-have reception venue (rustic barn) or the flavor-of-the-day favor (whimsical candy bar), all brides want something about their wedding to whisper, “I’m in the know. I’m stylish.” And now that we’re well into the 2010s, that doesn’t mean a chocolate fountain or puffy sleeves! Randy explains that the millenial bride was obsessed with designer labels, and her predecessors, the ‘90s and ‘80s brides, were all about minimalism and excess, respectively. So what defines today’s bride? As the resident expert shares 10 categories of contemporary bridal chic, get ready to be inspired and a little surprised, too!

Couples are finding their wedding inspiration from a wide range of sources including movies, royalty and of course, celebrity weddings. Feel free to take inspiration and gather ideas from these sources, but remember to add your own style and make it personal, and about you as a couple. Randy’s Advice: Take inspiration, but don’t be a copycat. Be yourselves, not a clone of William and Kate.

short & sweet
That would be dresses. There’s no law that says you have to go all full throttle ball gown on your big day. When you mention wedding dresses, you would always conjure up an image of a long white dress, slowly draping over the floor as you walk down the aisle. This 2014, why don’t you set the trend anew? Sport a short wedding dress and show them that bridal elegance isn’t how long your wedding dress is. Short wedding dresses are actually refreshing, casual, contemporary and chic.

perfect hair
Thanks to the magic of hair extensions every bride can have a thick, luscious style-able mane. While hair extensions can enhance your look, make sure that the style that you choose suits your face shape. If you have a heart shaped face then a swoop bang will work well. For round faces, create an updo with plenty of height to lengthen your face and if you have a square or diamond shaped face, have a few tendrils fall on your face, particularly around the jawline to soften the look.
Your theme should reflect your ideas, your personality, and your future as a married couple. Remember, it’s a wedding. Not Halloween or a child’s birthday party.
Own your own theme
v
From classic and romantic to quirky and fun, choosing a wedding theme should be a way for you to express yourself and have fun. When you are planning your wedding, choosing a theme is a way for you to jump start the planning process, and a way for you to feel like every part of the wedding is truly unique to you.

fixing up your first home
No more bouncing around from place to place. The two of you have finally found a place to plant some roots! Sure, you’ve got the deed that says the place is yours, but those bare walls say nothing about who the two of you are together. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your new square footage, don’t worry. These simple decorating tips will guide you through the process of turning your very first house into your very first home!
make decisions together
Removing the words yours and mine from your vocabulary can be challenging, but when it comes to your home, always remember you’ll share the space together. That means you’ll face the task of merging design styles, preferences and ideas, but you won’t always see eye-to-eye. Even if one of you is less than design savvy, you’ll each be happier with your home if you work together as a team. Combine personal styles when possible and create individual zones when not. For example, dedicate a man cave for sports memorabilia or a craft room for feminine colors -- that way, you’ll each have a space truly dedicated to the things you love without stepping on each other’s toes.
second hand isn’t second best
As the budget allows, begin the process of upgrading your furniture to the pieces you’ve been eyeing. Because furniture is a large investment, look for timeless pieces that you both will enjoy for a very long time.
make it yours
The best tip for decorating your first place as a couple is to make the space your own. Take time to think about what makes you and your partner unique and incorporate decor that represents who you are. For example, take pictures of your favorite people, places and things to create a portrait gallery wall, or try a DIY art project that incorporates the date you first met. You can also use iron-on decals to create monogrammed pillows with your names or initials, or paint a room in your favorite color. Adding personalized touches throughout your home will remind you of the journey you’ve taken, and encourage you for the one that’s yet to come!
style file - ombre your home Looking to add a pop of color to your home decor but can’t decide on just one? The ever popular ombre trend could be for you. Two trends in one: mint and ombre! Paint the wall with a base of your lightest shade. Then use painter’s tape to divide the wall into equal sections for as many colors as you want to use.
Paint each section the appropriate color and then blend. An ombre inspired wall is a must-have for anyone who wants to brighten up a room or create a focal wall. Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2014 ♥ www.florida-bride.com 21

YOUR LIFE
When celebrities run out for a few things at the grocery store, they look like they’ve just stepped out of the pages of Vogue magazine. It’s easy to look fabulous all the time when you have personal stylists not to mention a virtually unlimited budget. For those of us with limited bank accounts looking fashionable can be more of a challenge. Yet fashion experts say that you can look fabulous, regardless of how much you spend. Part of the key to becoming a fashionista is figuring out your personal style then finding specific wardrobe pieces that showcase it.
what to do?
Find a celebrity or model who best captures the style you want. Flip through the pages of leading fashion and entertainment magazines to find pictures of your style icons. Cut out those pictures and paste them into a binder to inspire you. Don’t copy just use elements of that celebrity’s look as a inspiration to create your own style. Take your own pictures. Carry along a camera as you window shop. Inspiration can come from a variety of sources. Don’t just look at what’s hot today. Shop vintage clothing stores and look through the pages of old magazines and history books so you can see the origins of the latest styles. Look to both modern and classic fashion icons, like Jackie Onassis or Grace Kelly. You might find that your personal style combines elements from both.
dress your body type...
What are the best parts of your body? Focus on the areas that you like best and choose clothing and accessories to highlight them. If you have blue eyes, show them off with eye shadow and liner colors that really make them pop. Endless legs deserve to be seen in shorts and mini-skirts. Know your measurements so you can find clothing that fits well. Write down your measurements and bring them with you when you shop. Try to dress to your body shape. Most women’s bodies are pear-shaped, which means they have a narrow waist and wider hips. If you’re pear-shaped, buy clothing that draws attention to your slim upper body. Brightly colored shirts, scarves and modern-looking shoulder pads should work well. Wear tailored pants and skirts, as well as hiplength long jackets. Avoid pleats and stripes, which will further accentuate broader areas. If you’re rounder and more apple-shaped all around, you’ll want to draw attention away from your waist. Go for flat-fronted skirts, empire-waisted dresses and tailored, wide-legged pants. Don’t accentuate a flat chest with a deep v-neck. Instead, choose rounded-neck tops, and add a layered necklace to add dimension. If you’re busty, accentuate your curves by wearing a scooped neckline that hugs your chest appropriately. If you’re extra curvy, you don’t have to wear baggy, saggy clothes. You can still find fashionable, tailored clothes that comfortably compliment your body. Shop in stores that can accommodate your shape and buy clothes that fit well.

The Hair - Victory Rolls
R E TRO ❉
Wartime hairstyles had to be neat, feminine and practical. Suitable to wear in the daytime and evening. To achieve this classy look curl all of your hair with a curling iron or hot rolls, then take the front portion of your hair from ears forward, part down the middle and start rolling back! Smooth out the top layer of hair, curl your bangs under, and voilà Victory Rolls with bangs!
❉
The Look Makeup break down: to recreate a pin up look all you need is a light even skin tone that has a matte finish, classic winged eyeliner, nicely shaped natural brows, blushing cheeks, and ruby red lips!
The Jewelry
Classic jewelry in pearls and gold bring the look together. You may want to add some vintage half length white gloves to complete the look.
The Dress Captain Red Pencil from Bettie Page is their most popular dress in red! It is double breasted with a ruffled sailor collar trimmed in white satin for that vintage 40’s look. The dress below is also from Bettie Page and has front buttons from top to bottom. It has an adorable oversized collar with tie that can be made into a bow for that retro 50’s look.
From the editor
As the Editor of Florida Bride Magazine I have to tell you that I had so much fun doing the 1940’s Pinup Photo Shoot! I really didn’t know what to expect, but I found out how much time and effort is involved. There is so much preparation in the makeup, hairstyle, clothing and backdrops to capture just the right look. From antique typewriters, fans and the correct era of phone to set the mood. The crew was so professional. I highly recommend doing one of these shoots with your bridal party and friends! After seeing the photos I think I want to change my entire wardrobe to this wonderful feminine attire.
The Belt A classic slimline belt in white accents the look of the vintage 40’s captains red pencil dress.
The Props Yes it’s time to go shopping at those antique stores! For this shoot we used vintage typewriters and a 1950’s style telephone. We also incorporated a vintage fan, glasses and some old style pinup magazines to set the tone. Keep in mind the era you are trying to portray. A little research goes a long way.
Thank you to all of you wonderful ladies from the past for bringing this look back to us.

You vowed you would never be that girl…that bridezilla, but now that you have the wedding ring on your finger and the wedding day is getting closer, do you find yourself wanting to breath fire?

We have put together some very helpful tips to help you keep the monster at bay! Your bridal party and family will thank you. You’re wondering what has happened to you, you’re not this person. You can’t remember where you put anything, you’re jumping from one thing to another leaving you feeling impatient. You’re having a problem making decisions, and as we all know there’s a lot of those to make when planning a wedding. This is caused by an increase of cortisol, a hormone that affects the brains memory center.

You can’t sleep, whenever you lie down you worry something’s not right. The color of the linen, the flowers you want aren’t in season! This causes an increase in glucocorticoid which is a stress hormone that blocks sleep. Guess what happens then…the less you sleep the more glucocorticoid you produce! Remember to eat foods that can help you stay focused such as fresh fruits, yogurt, nuts and omega 3 fats which produce myelin to increase the speed of nerve signals. Don’t have too many munchies, this is caused by stress and our brain is telling you to have carbs and sugar which release serotonin. The stress of being in shape and looking like a movie star can put anyone over the edge. Starving yourself isn’t the answer, it will only shorten your temper more and make you unhappy. Eat healthy and workout in moderation. Here’s a great trick celebrities use: Put your food on a smaller plate. This will trick your mind into thinking you are having a larger portion! The goal is gorgeous and the goal is being a Bridechilla! When you exercise in the evening it can inhibit the production of melatonin which is a hormone that helps the sleep cycle. Meditating before you lie down will help you to relax. Every time you complete a part of the wedding day process, treat yourself to a little celebration like a spa day or a date night with your fiancé. Remember to focus on the we and not the me. Brides tend to describe their wedding as theirs, when getting your fiance’s opinion may actually give you a whole new perspective and help you! The goal is to make it a special day for the both of you. Organize by looking through magazines like Florida Bride Magazine to get ideas and find out what the newest trends are. Cut out the pictures and group them in a folder, show your bridal party and get their opinions so they can share in helping you make a decision. Delegate without sounding pushy, you can’t do everything by yourself. Looking beautiful is always a big concern to every bride on her wedding. The most beautiful brides I have ever seen are the ones with a smile on their face and a glow in their eyes of excitement! Relax, take a deep breath and be confident in those you have chosen to be a part of your wedding day. At some point you need to let go, and know that they will handle all of the details you have taken time to go over with them. They are professionals and know what is needed to be done for your special day! Let me tell you a little secret most vendors won’t. When you treat your vendors good, they will go all out for you, but when you act like a spoiled brat they can’t wait till the hands of the clock are on the exact second to leave! Stop trying to impress your guests and keep things in perspective. Your wedding is a symbol of love. Remember the most important item on your wedding day list is the person who is waiting for you when you walk up the aisle. Enjoy every second of your wedding day, and make whatever happens a part of the story you will be telling the rest of your life, with a beautiful Bridechilla smile! for the love of food... Gordon Ramsey crepe suzette...
For the crêpes: 125g plain flour, ¼ tsp fine sea salt, 2 medium eggs beaten, 1 tbsp melted butter, 300ml milk, finely grated zest of 2 oranges (see below) For the sauce: 3 large oranges - for zest, segmenting and juice, 50g caster sugar, 100ml Grand Marnier or Cointreau. How to make crêpes suzette: Sift the flour and salt into a bowl and make a well in the centre. Tip in the beaten eggs, butter, milk and orange zest. Whisk the ingredients just enough to combine into a smooth batter but try not to overwork the batter. Leave to rest while you prepare the oranges. To segment the oranges use a small sharp knife to slice off the top and bottom of the fruit. Stand the orange firmly on the chopping board, cut along the curved sides of the fruit to remove the remaining peel and pith. Holding the orange with one hand over a sieve set on top of a bowl, cut along each side of the membranes to release the segments. Let each segment fall into the sieve as you continue segmenting. Remove any membrane or pips left on the segments. Reserve the orange juice. Slowly heat the sugar in a heavy-based pan, stirring a little to help the sugar dissolve. Simmer until the syrup forms a light caramel. Carefully add the Grand Marnier and stand back as it will spit. Tip the pan slightly to flambé the alcohol, if you wish. Pour in the orange juice and boil until reduced by half. Remove from heat, tip in the orange segments and keep warm. Heat a non-stick crêpe pan with butter over medium heat. Evenly coat the pan, then add a small ladleful of batter and swirl again to evenly coat the base of the pan with a thin layer of batter. Cook for about 1½ minutes until the batter is set and golden brown underneath. Flip over to cook the other side for a minute. Transfer to a warm plate. For each individual serving, fold two crêpes into quarters. Spoon over a little of the orange sauce making sure to include some segments. Serve immediately.

Why I love this dish: This dish is as unique as it is versatile. It is great for a backyard BBQ to be served as simply as in a soft tortilla shell with the jicama slaw used as a “salsa”. Or can be dressed up on a cool evening night served over couscous with the slaw garnished over top. The flavors of this dish are both rich and bright. It walks a line between BBQ and mole. It is a crowd pleaser that will intrigue your guests, either at home or for a catered affair.
Ingredients:
Ingredients:
For the pork: 6 lbs Berkshire pork belly, 1 c. Brown sugar, ½ c. Chili powder, 6 Tbsp. Salt, 8 c. Pomegranate juice, 2 c. Pomegranate vinegar, 1 lb Mexican chocolate, 6 ea. Poblano chilis.
For the slaw: 1 lb Jicama, julienned. 5 Tbsp. Cilantro chopped, 4 Tbsp. Spanish onion, small dice, ½ C. Lime juice.
Preparation: Place pork belly in baking dish, mix together sugar, chili powder, salt and rub all over the pork belly, let stand in refrigerator for 24 hours. Rub poblano chilis with a touch of olive oil and broil in a 500 degree oven for 8 minutes until chilis are charred. Let chilis cool and scrape off the char to reveal the roasted flesh of the chilis. Place the chilis in a large sauce pot with pomegranate juice, pomegranate vinegar and chocolate, bring to the boil, turn down to a simmer for 10 minutes. Puree with hand blender. Pour pomegranate chocolate sauce over the pork belly, cover, and bake at 275 degrees for 3 hours. Uncover and continue to bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

MY
SUMMER OF LOVE
color trends Buttercup Weddings
The color Buttercup is a shade of yellow which means joy and happiness. This color is a beautiful choice for spring and early summer weddings. It symbolizes the blooming flowers and gentle light before the bright summer sunshine. Yellow roses to the Europeans in the 18th century meant undying love while yellow daffodils are a symbol of unrequited love. To the ancient Greeks yellow denoted air, and Leonardo da Vinci wrote yellow represented earth. To the Navaho the western mountains are yellow and bring the twilight, to the Hopi yellow is north. Incorporate the color buttercup into your bridesmaids’ dresses, bouquets, shoes and head pieces. Add an accent ribbon to the groom’s boutonniere. A flower girls dress with a buttercup ribbon would be an absolutely adorable touch! Don’t forget the groomsmen, a touch of buttercup included in their ties, bowties or cummerbund’s finishes off the look. Ribbons, vases and other accessories can be incorporated to bring in your color theme. Consider tying a ribbon in the shade of buttercup on your guests chairs at the reception or lay a runner down the middle of your table.
40 Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2014 ♥ www.florida-bride.com
The color buttercup pairs nicely with seafoam, pastel pink and navy blue. Use one of these shades to accentuate your color theme. Let your guests know beforehand what your wedding is going to be about. Give them a hint on your invitations by adding an adorable buttercup design on it. Paint the frame around your engagement picture on your guest sign in table, and shop party favors as gifts for your guests to carry your theme throughout.
KEEPING WITH
TRADITION
Traditionally a white wedding cake is still in trend, but bakers can create cakes in any color you prefer. A light yellow frosted cake is a perfect choice for this event! If you prefer a more traditional white cake add yellow ribbons or icing flowers, like the buttercup to bring in your color theme. Cupcakes have become extremely popular of late. If they are going to be your desert of preference, they can easily be decorated with yellow frosting accents or a cute floral design. Bringing yellow into your wedding theme will bring in the energy of a bright

Naked wedding cake
the
An utterly gorgeous {& delicious!} wedding trend! Perhaps you don’t know exactly what I am talking about, but rest assured if you haven’t you will! Naked cakes are those that go sans frosting around the sides of the cake leaving the appeal of the cake to be in its natural, uncovered beauty of the spongy goodness of the cake itself. The beauty in this design and the color of the cake itself can set a tone and influence the look and feel that you’re going for. Vanilla in its natural look or a chocolate cake will get you a wonderfully moody sultry treat! The fun doesn’t stop at the beauty of the cake alone, the other side to the naked cake’s beauty is in its’ fillings and toppings, in the form of frosting, berries, caramel, honey, natural blooms and so much more! There is a limitless amount of creative elements that can be put together, while the real value is that these frosting shedding cakes can easily transcend a number of different wedding themes and styles! Another real treat to the naked cake is their size ability. Perhaps something that the naked cake has over their frosting covered friends, is their ability to handle drastic changes in size, stacked with more layers which thanks to the lack of frosting makes much better sense when the viewer is able to see each layer for itself. Whether there is not a touch of frosting whatsoever on the edge, or a sweet white wash look, playing with the size of them only serves to reinforce how amazing they truly are working to highlight each and every detail! Naked cakes aren’t anti-frosting, so please don’t think that, they just utilize frosting in a different way. Basically frosting is oh so very much your friend when it comes to the naked cake. The real beauty to the naked cake is the feeling that they evoke. There is an honesty, a bare it allness to them.
They are what they are and they are beautiful. There is something like home to them, like walking into your house after school to see your mother layering frosting on a cake she is making, its real, it’s honest and it is so wonderfully yummy! These elegant beauties can work their magic into the most sophisticated of fete or the most rustic vintage affair.

Mar!
Weddings: a 160 billion dollar business! Wow, now that’s worth learning more about. Today the average wedding in America costs around $29,000.00 and with so many different resources it’s no wonder we don’t know where to start. Magazines, TV Shows, Fairs, Stores. All are dedicated to the big day, but how do you make your way through all that while trying to save money and still having a wedding to remember? Not to worry, Mar is here! He has every price point wedding so he knows the deals and the steals. Home weddings are back in style! If you know anyone with a beautiful home or a large garden, consider having the wedding there. A garden wedding and reception are always beautiful. Just remember that tents can be just as expensive as a location so make sure you do your homework, compare prices and get all the proper permits ahead of time. Today, modesty is making a BIG comeback! The wedding dress is important, but at the end of the day what makes a wedding dress “perfectly yours” is how it’s fitted, not how much you paid for it. Less expensive dresses are just as amazing as new designs and can be found at smaller boutique shops. In 1840, Queen Victoria started the tradition of the white dress. Before that it was customary for brides to wear a new-ish dress that she would take to her new life. Today brides have choice with color and designs, such as a green Vera Wang dress—when you have the confidence to get something different that suits your personality and taste, it’s not just a dress, it’s a dream come true. Flowers—Always opt for fresh flowers for the bridal party, but you may want to consider silk flowers, plants, candles, shells and decorative stones as alternatives for your tables. Prim-roses, Orchids, Ivy topiaries are all good alternatives to cut flowers. Mercury glass vessels are wonderful ways to stage a plant or flower; they offer a powerful upgrade to any plant, giving you a bang for the buck and last longer than the honeymoon. When it comes to the time of day for your wedding, why not coincide with a dazzling sunset? It’s free and all it takes is a little planning. So plan ahead and have Mother Nature be right by your side for that breathtaking sunset display. My tips: start the ceremony before sunset so you get two types of light for your photos: direct sunshine and breathtaking sunset backdrops. Priceless! If you’re spending good money having your day filmed you may want to consider insuring it. What do I mean? Put your wedding DVD in a safe deposit box and insure it on your homeowners policy. Believe it or not some insurance policies give you the money on your claim to re-stage your wedding ceremony for pictures. This is worth asking your carrier about.
“
No matter how you choose to save money it’s important to have a plan, a budget and friends and family to help the process. Your wedding is all about you--not your wallet. Memories last forever, but debt makes it painful to remember beginnings.

your butler of honor... Mar’s Summertime is the height of the wedding season and the time of year when I get a lot of requests for help in planning weddings, not to mention invitations.
And while I’ve yet to have my own, I have been involved with more weddings than I could count. I’ve run the gamut; everything from planning the reception, helping the bride find the perfect dress, arranging and selecting flowers to rearranging seating charts on the big day. Now with my busy schedule, regrettably the only role I can accept is that of guest. That said, I wanted to share with you a great idea I came up with for insuring a wedding day full of bliss, not craziness. It’s the role of “Butler of Honor” and every bride should have one at her side throughout the whole bridal process – from the engagement party to the reception and all the events in between. With all the stress of planning and executing a wedding, a “Butler of Honor” is more a necessity than a luxury that a bride cannot afford to miss out on. The role of “Butler of Honor” or BOH, will never replace the role of Maid or Matron of Honor unless you want it to. This person should never be the default wedding planner, nor should he be confused with the best man whose role it is to take care of the groom. No, the BOH is there to assist the bride only, and to provide some relief from all the demands, questions and decisions she contends with in the months, weeks and days leading up to the wedding. He is there to diffuse any tension that arises with service providers, wedding party members or the out-of-town guest who insists that the bride provide childcare during the ceremony and reception. A BOH is there to say “no”, “hell no”, and/or “absolutely not” unemotionally, directly and always with a smile. I personally, have never had a problem making my feelings known about certain traditions. Please, it’s your wedding. So let’s 86 the traditions that have become so annoying and tedious and focus on the details that will make it perfect. I always think about the bride first and the family second when it comes to what other people think. It’s about keeping the bride calm, cool, and collected and always out of the line of fire. Ladies, now that I have your attention, you’re probably wondering how to go about choosing the right man for this important role. First, it really must be a “man” (sorry ladies) you can trust. Someone who will help you and the women in your wedding party remain calm and not freak out over little things; someone who will tell you it’s time to relax; someone you won’t mind seeing you in various stages of undress; someone who will be direct and honest with you about everything from a potentially unflattering outfit choice to ignoring the sharp zinger your future mother-in-law just said. He is your right-hand guy that you will be spending an endless amount of one-on-one time with till marriage takes you apart! And with his help and dedication, you will walk down that aisle unscathed and stress free. The choices of BOH are best made in terms of a job application. You need someone with the right mix of experience and personality to handle the role effectively and effortlessly. This person possesses the presence of mind and grace so as to not step on anyone’s toes, especially some of those family members who really do have the best intentions, but will drive you crazy with never-ending “suggestions” on how to do everything.
48 Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2014 ♥ www.florida-bride.com
Lifestyle Editor Mar Jennings You may think your father or your husband-to-be will be able to perform this BOH role, but like your Maid of Honor, they’re too wrapped up emotionally in the whole event. The best Butler’s of Honor are male friends that you love, but you’ve never dated and or married. You know those single, male friends that feel like brothers rather than lovers—who love to gossip and shop and tell you when you need to reapply lipstick; the man that will hold your head up after a night out with the girls and can get away with telling you that you’re getting a little doughy/heavy and then help you rework your wardrobe so you can face the world. Here are just some of the responsibilities of a BOH to give you an idea of the preferred qualifications you’re looking for:
Local – Even if you’re planning a far-flung destination wedding, your BOH needs to live near you. Always available – morning, noon and night, you want to be able to reach him by phone Blackberry or iPhone, or on his front porch at 2 a.m. when you just have to discuss flower arrangements. Sound like someone you know? Clean cut, good looking and stylish –Your new BOH is representing you and it’s important he make the right impression. He’s there to make you look and feel great, so he should too. Approved by the groom – You’ll be spending a lot of time with your BOH – make sure your guy isn’t concerned about your “other man.” Experience with weddings and party planning (preferred) - he has to know the right questions to ask and work on getting the best prices. Network of contacts – Your BOH should be your go-to man finding anything you need – a good manicure, a killer massage, a good tailor or mechanic, theater tickets, a get-a-way car and more. Ability to negotiate and manage crises – no matter how small, any crisis feels huge just before you get married. A BOH should excel at the big and small issues that arise with style and grace. Attention to detail – The devil is in the details and your BOH needs to be, too. Tact and Timing – He needs to know when and how to speak for the bride and when to remove her from sticky situations, even if that means throwing her over his shoulder and taking her away before she gets too crazy and starts doing things she may regret at her bachelorette party! A sloppy bride-to-be is never attractive and your BOH will make sure that it does not happen. Having been a butler of honor for many friends over the years, I can tell you that it has been a rewarding and memorable experience. It takes commitment and a considerable amount of time, so make sure that you recognize and thank your BOH appropriately. Consider sending him for a weekend at a Spa or beachside resort the day after the wedding. You know he’ll be there! Coordinate a year’s worth of massages or haircuts that are all prepaid by your father as part of the wedding expense. You know this man the best--be sure to let him know what you’re planning in advance, especially if it involves travel. A good BOH will be almost as exhausted after your wedding day as you are, so knowing he’ll be able to getaway for some R&R afterward will help energize him throughout the process. The benefits of having a Butler of Honor will be worth more than you can imagine—your wedding memories will be the proof! You can proudly tell him that you were Mar’ed” in a good way! A WHIRLWIND
April and Billy’s Whirlwind Romance began when they were both teenagers. They had been friends for many years, but never dated. Each of them went their ways in life, but always stayed close and shared the same group of friends.
When one of their friends got married both of them were invited to the wedding, and that is when sparks began to fly! After knowing each other for so long it was easy for their friendship to blossom into romance. Their wedding was held at the historic Hillsboro Club which stands on its own peninsula at the entrance to the Hillsboro inlet. At the end of the peninsula is the historic Hillsboro Lighthouse that guides the parade of fishing boats and luxury yachts sailing from the Caribbean. Their color palette was a blend of turquoise, mango and white which had a light and airy feeling. The bamboo canopy was covered in turquoise material with white florals. The color theme was carried throughout their reception into the candy station, bouquets, orchid centerpieces, a beach themed wedding cake with a starfish bride and groom topper, and even the brides turquoise shoes which were covered in rhinestones. If you are wondering whether that tornado looking cloud in the background is real or not, let me assure you, it is! A waterspout hit about 100 feet of where their wedding ceremony was setup. Their wedding actually made it onto the National Weather channel. I think the quote was “Wedding Party runs for their life!” If rain is suppose to be lucky on your wedding day, then this couple will have plenty of it.

uring World War II Pinups were everywhere! Most actresses of the time were first considered a Pinup and then an actress. Lots of celebrities over the past 75 years have posed for pinup and glamour artists. The pin-up girls were originally known as “Petty Girls”, named after the artist George Petty, which were popularized by Esquire magazine during those decades. Many “pin ups” were photographs of celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Jane Mansfield, the edgy Bettie Page and Betty Grable whose poster was all over GIs lockers during the war. Other pin-ups were considered artwork depicting idealized versions of a beautiful woman. An early example of the latter was the Gibson girl, drawn by Charles Dana Gibson. The term Pin-up was first used in 1941, but the practice has been documented back to the 1890s. Pin-up images could be cut out of newspapers and magazines or be on a postcard. Many of these photos were on calendars which of course are meant to be pinned up anyhow. The pin-up girl is a woman whose attractiveness would entice you to place a picture of her on your wall. In addition to stunning depictions of fierce, snarling animals like tigers, eagles and sharks, pin-up girls frequently graced the noses of U.S. aircraft. In 1941 test pilot Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier in a jet he decorated with a gorgeous pin-up of his wife, naming the plane “Glamorous Glennis.” Every girl curled her hair in pin curls and dimpled as she smiled hoping to be taken for a pinup herself.
B
y the 1960’s the classic pinup became lost by the publics’ fascination with nudity rather that creativity or beauty. Pin-up fashion has remained resilient, however and has now been re-discovered and introduced to new generations around the world. It has rose again with the resurgence of Rockabilly and Swing music.

“My Name is Thais Galliani/ “Ty” I moved to Florida from Brazil when I was 8 Years old and always took a liking to warm beach climates. My Husband Rich Centauro came from New York and moved to Florida when he was 12 also finding himself on a beach loving the Florida Climate! We both shared the commonality and once we met we were both destined to have a Florida Beach Wedding. Upon getting engaged on 11-11-11 the wedding planning started! We knew we wanted to somehow incorporate the water & beach into our wedding but never did we anticipate having the beach wedding we’ve always dreamed of! Upon countless venue options, we eventually took advantage of the tranquility of the Florida Keys, but through all of this knew that we wanted a wedding we would never forget, and photography was one of the upmost important aspects we needed to acquire in order to capture this moment. “Richie has extensive experience in the special event industry managing operations for one of the Top companies in South Florida “Tents N Events.com”. All we needed to find was the Best Beach location and knew he could transform it into a Lavish Venue – Bringing elegance to the sand! 64 Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2014 ♥ www.florida-bride.com

“Richie & I knew that when it was time, we were going to incorporate the beach & water theme into our wedding but never to this extent! It was the photographer’s idea to take his passionate underwater photography to the next level, and lucky us, we were able to incorporate it right into our entire wedding on 11-30-12. From sign in books, to simple favors everything had a touch of these amazing photos – One photo was even blown up (by “PureCanvas.com” ) into a huge 5’x7’ portrait & served as a huge beautiful backdrop canvas behind our cake table- it really made the display pop & come to life! Grown from a simple thought - the underwater images emerged into an astonishing piece of art! We were so grateful to work with Adam Opris (From: AdamOprisPhoto.com) I am so happy this amazing memory was captured and printed onto a tangible canvas! We now display the canvas in our home & we’ll cherish this moment forever!” It’s a one of a kind Photo that never gets old! It’s simply art!”

The excitement is building, the energy is growing…and so is the list.
This is a most wonderful time in your life and it can be a challenge to keep it all in check. Incorporating some type of exercise will help calm your nerves, work out your stress and keep your overall emotional and physical well being in check, so now would be the perfect time to begin. Here are just a few simple facts and ways to reduce your stress levels: Fact: Being active boosts feel-good endorphins. Fact: Exercise keeps you positive and moving forward. Any form of exercise, be it aerobics, spinning or yoga helps to relieve stress. Don’t worry about being out of shape now, or not being much of an athlete, even walking reduces stress. Put on the headphones and listen to your favorite music. Any type of physical activity can, and should, become an important part of your plan to release and unwind.
Remember, exercise increases your overall health. Period. If you’re new at this, start slowly. If you can’t give 30 minutes at a time to walking, do it 10 minutes at a time. 5 minutes each way before breakfast, again at lunch and at night. It all adds up to a more relaxed, more fit and energized you. Dreams
Bring on the micro beads, neon shades and glittery accents! The latest wedding manicure trends vary from super-fun and tactile caviar polish to elegant nails in full-coverage nudes and the hottest colors of the season. We’re seeing popular summer wedding colors like Tangerine Tango, Seafoam and Rasberry shining brightly from pretty brides’ and bridesmaids’ fingers and toes. Fitting right in with this season’s nail color and design trends, we love the Mint Sorbet manicure with micro bead nail accent.
We’ve seen shatter polish, crackle applications and just about everything else when it comes to beauty trends, but today we’re featuring something that you might want to add to your wedding planning list of things-to-do! Beauty blogs everywhere have been touting this cool new nail art technique that is sure to take nail salons by storm, the caviar manicure. Delicate little micro beads playfully dot the fun and trendy caviar polish manicures. Sometimes referred to as the 3D manicure, these nails look so enticing and touchable! Here’s an important tip for this manicure style – you’ll probably need a solid, clear gel coat over the top of the caviar polish to keep all the little glass beads attached to nails for more than a few hours. This is more of a one event manicure, not a look that will last. White or light nail polish shades are always pretty for a wedding day and the caviar manicure makes this pretty look really shine. Popular UK nail polish company Ciaté offers fun caviar manicure kits, which include nail color, micro beads, funnel and tray. Caviar has a 3D effect, with tiny little beads covering the entire nail plate. According to the directions on the company’s site, it seems like a pretty simple application, polish nails, shake on beads, set with a top coat. Whatever your style you can be fun and creative with patterns and looks. After all, it’s all about making your day unique.

Your Hands
tell a lot
about you...
hands tell a lot about you‌ Most people agree that our hands are one of the first parts on our body to show our age. They are constantly exposed to the elements and the thin skin on our hands make them more prone to damage. We have put together some Quick Tips to help you pay more attention to your hands and keep everyone guessing how old you are.
1. Preventative Care Sunscreen, however redundant it sounds, to prevent your hands from showing sunspots and wrinkling apply it daily. Blockers like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide provide the best protection.
2. Sun Spots Those ugly distracting Brown Spots that appear on our skin can make our hands appear aged sooner than is necessary. We have found one or more treatments with Intense Pulsed Light, which is an energy device that lightens the spots and improves tone and excessive wrinkling on hands can be very helpful. To improve tone and radiance try a chemical peel applied to the back of your hands. One that contains glycolic acid will gently remove dead skin cells and give them a natural, healthy glow.
3. Lift and Plump As we get older we tend to loose volume, bones and veins are more prominent and skin becomes translucent. This effect can be restored with hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm, Radiesse or Restylane. These fillers usually last about 3 to 6 months and provide instant improvement.
4. Moisture
Use a good serum to combat antioxidants and regenerate new collagen. Place it on your hands a couple of times a day. Follow with a rehydrating hand cream that contains retinol to increase cell turnover, and further collagen production before going to bed.
5. Exfoliate We cannot encourage you more to practice exfoliating your hands. Regular exfoliating will rid your skin of superficial dead skin cells and keep them moisturized throughout the day. Wear gloves when doing dishes and using harsh chemicals. Remember excessive water exposure can dry your skin so protect it.
By using these Quick Tips your hands will keep your age a secret‌SHHH! Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2014 ♼ www.florida-bride.com 69

What is your professional advice for looking beautiful on your big day? I always encourage a bride to plan the look she wants before her wedding—just like she plans everything else—working either with her makeup artist or experimenting herself, so she knows exactly how she will appear on the big day. (I recommend hiring a professional makeup artist for the best results.) I can’t stress enough how important a makeup rehearsal is in planning your big day. Before meeting with your makeup artist or before practicing (if you will be doing your own makeup), look through fashion magazines and tear out the pages that have examples of makeup that you like. “Don’t worry about trying to find one photo with the look you want; I have found that most brides choose a different feature from a few different pictures. For example, the eye makeup design from one and the skin effect and lip look from another”. How do you find the right foundation for your skin type? Is there a specific foundation formula that you recommend for photos (i.e., cream, liquid or powder)? Finding the right foundation for your wedding day is part of the preparations that you should begin at least six months beforehand. Choose a foundation formula that will work with your skin, your skin type and skin texture but most of all with who you are. For example, if you usually don’t wear a foundation, consider wearing a lighter formulation such as a tinted moisturizer or a BB cream. The foundations that I have used successfully are thin and highly pigmented; they are formulas that appear barely-there on the skin and that photograph beautifully. I’m working on a similar formula for ARTISTRY™ that I think is incredible; until then the Giorgio Armani Maestro formula is an excellent choice. How do you effectively hide dark under-eye circles or the surprise wedding day blemish? If after applying the foundation you still see the dark under eye shadows, the best way to hide these is to use a concealer. Use a small concealer brush to apply the concealer by starting from the inner eye corner and blending the concealer over the under eye shadow. Now gently pat foundation over the concealer. If the skin imperfections are still visible, repeat the first concealer step. Finish with an application of transparent or colorless loose powder to set the makeup. To cover a skin imperfection that is red, such as a blemish, use a green or yellow toned concealer first, then apply foundation; reapply your usual concealer over the foundation and then lightly powder. How do you get luscious lips that last all day? The trick to luscious lips that last all day is to use a longwearing lip liner formula such Make Up Forever Waterproof Aqua Color Lip Liner or Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Stayin-Place lip liner. Line first and then fill in lips with lip liner. Next apply lipstick, blot lips with a tissue, and then reapply lipstick. What are some must-have products for makeup touch-ups? There are three must-have touch-up products. First, to eliminate any shine during picture-taking, you will need a pressed powder compact such as ARTISTRY Exact Fit Translucent Press Powder. Second, to touch up under eyes if needed, be sure to have an eye cream and a concealer on hand. Lastly, don’t forget a light and luminous lipstick or gloss to touch up your lips during the reception. Rick’s top bridal makeup tips

What can brides do to make their makeup last? Brides can make their makeup last by using long wear formulas such as Make-Up Forever Aqua, Estée Lauder Double Wear and Revlon ColorStay. It’s also very important to exfoliate and hydrate the skin. If your skin is hydrated and exfoliated, it’s easier to apply your makeup, and it will last longer. Clean, exfoliated and well-hydrated skin has a natural glow. After removing your make-up and cleansing your skin at night, use an exfoliation product such as ARTISTRY INTENSIVE SKINCARE Renewing Peel to remove any dead cell build-up. Follow with a good serum and moisturizer such as ARTISTRY YOUTH XTEND™ Serum Concentrate and Enriching Cream.
How do you get the perfect brow shape if you have little to no brows? Here are my “ABC’s” to create the perfect brow shape. A) Lay a pencil next to the side of base of the nose; line the pencil straight up. Directly above this, on the brow bone, is where the brow needs to start. Make a little vertical line mark to show where the brow needs to start. B) Keeping the bottom end of the pencil in place, pivot the top end of the pencil so it lines up with the outer edge of the pupil. Make a small dot where the pencil now hits the brow area. This is where the brow should arch. C) Continue pivoting the pencil out further, to a 45-degree angle along the side of the cheekbone. Mark with a final dot where the pencil lays on the outside of the brow. This is where the brow should end.
“
D) Use your marks as a guide to pencil in the brow shape outline. Use short, feathery strokes with the pencil, starting from the bottom of the vertical line and connecting it to the first dot; then connect the first dot to the second dot. E) Once the shape is created, fill in with more feathery strokes of pencil.
Rick’s pro tip
Before using a brow powder or pencil, first brush mascara through the brows; I prefer to use a brown shade. Prepare the mascara brush by first sliding mascara wand through a clean tissue to remove any excess product from wand. Now gently blend through brows. This is a quick way to create definition, and it also shows you where you need to fill in, if at all.

Cheyenne and Michael
Michael and Cheyenne both were born and raised in Okeechobee, Florida. They went to school together their whole lives and never knew the other existed. That is until he got a job across the street from her. She was working at a convenience store at the time and she started to take notice of a guy that came into the store every morning for a sweet tea. Every time he came in he was as sweet and polite as could be. It wasn’t long before she would start to get butterflies in her stomach when she knew it was about the time for him to come in. The wedding was a fall country theme with an outdoor ceremony and an indoor reception in the newly completed banquet hall. The vows took place in front of a wooden fence styled archway adorned with beautiful fall colored flowers. Pictures of Michael’s Mother who had passed away as well as Cheyenne’s grandfather had their own seat in the front row so they could still be present on their special day. A reception followed inside overlooking a large stone fireplace, and the ceiling was lit with large crystal chandeliers. The tables were decorated with custom 3 tiered oak centerpieces to symbolize the couples love for the outdoors.

Buddy shares his tips with our Florida Brides What’s the best way to save the top layer of our cake for our first anniversary? “The trick is locking out as much moisture as possible,” Valastro says. “Store the top tier in an airtight container. Then wrap the container in plastic wrap and freeze it. It should keep until you’re ready to thaw it out.” Why should I have a groom’s cake? Valastro gives three reasons. One, “If the couple can’t agree, the bride should get the wedding cake she wants; he can have his groom’s cake,” he says. Two, “It’s a fun way to do something really fun and themed—I just did a huge tennis ball cake!” And finally, “It’s perfect to serve at the rehearsal dinner. It gets guests excited about the wedding and is more personal than a regular dessert.” If I’m doing cake tastings at multiple bakeries, should I schedule all of them on the same day to compare better? “We offer a regular-size slice of each flavor (10 total!) to give the couple an idea of the portions. Most finish every plate!” Valastro says. “Don’t go to more than one cake tasting in a day. You want to give each baker’s ideas and flavors a chance to sink in.” Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2014 ♥ www.florida-bride.com 81

Wedding trends for 2014: Unusual venues, food trucks, colorful cakes It’s wedding planning season, and there are plenty of decisions to be made on vows and rings, gowns and reception venues. We checked in with some local wedding professionals to see what’s trending in nuptials this year. Bridal bouquets are coming up lavender (and purple) this year. Bouquets are also trending away from the “wildflower feel” popular in past years and toward a little more formality and structure. A few years ago, it was almost a sin to put color on a wedding cake. Now, it’s all about bold colors, textures and patterns. The trend in venues is all about the nonraditional. Think unconventional locations. Warehouses, rooftops, vacation rental homes, “the more unique the better.” Art galleries, small restaurants and breweries can also make great venues.

up and coming designers
Florida Bride Magazine is always on the lookout for unique one-of-a-kind designers. That’s just what we found from Diva Designs. Niva, a local to Lakeland is a unique and creative makeup artist, body artist, face painter and wearable art designer that provides beautiful looks to fashion shows, photo shoots, weddings and any other call for fashion.
Diva Designs
She specializes in a variety of looks, from porcelain skin to couture and from magazine to runway.
NIVA DURHAM Artists are just different than most people. They think differently, they see the world in full color and have great imaginations! I am inspired by materials mostly, which I think is what makes me a great Wearable Art Designer. When I see materials, a complete picture comes into my mind and I have to sketch it right away! My designs have life-- I tell my models to “play a part” when they are wearing them, BECOME the design. And most models love it, the freedom to be someone else and not stiff.

tips from the experts
VINTAGE LOVE THE WEDDING DRESS The wedding dress is called “Vintage Love” Neva’s childhood friends mom passed away, and her father gave her the wedding dress. She said to me “ Neva you are the only one I know that could do something with this” So in memory of Mrs.Patricia Strecker, Neva completely redesigned this 1964 vintage wedding gown. The headpiece was also from the sixties era, and was made of 1500 hand painted silk rose petals, feathers and hand attached pearls. It was an honor to create this one of a kind piece.
He Loves Me, He loves me not
was created for a show at St Pete Fine Arts Museum called “Fashion, Fine Arts and Photography” - Three Magical Worlds Collide” Show. Inspired by “ The American Poppy” by Georgia O’Keefe. Made of 5000 silk rose petals and 2000 rhinestones and took 60 hours of work and a lot of love!
