editor’s letter what a wonderful year! Letter From The Editor:

What a wonderful year it has been for Florida Bride Magazine! We are so happy to have Monte Durham from “Say Yes to the Dress Atlanta” grace our Fall/Winter 2013 cover. Monte is certainly the epitome of the term southern gentleman, it was such a pleasure to have met him. I hope you have been watching The Glades on A&E. We were thrilled to have been mentioned in the opening scene in the third episode of Callie and Jims wedding. With five million viewers watching, we were ecstatic! Our staff has been so busy bringing you the wonderful articles in this fabulous issue. The Great Gatsby has been in the forefront of so many weddings this year that we had to include it in our Real Wedding section, and we thought it would be fun to have Monte Durham comment on the styled Jackie O wedding shoot inside since he is such a big fan of hers. Read Monte’s take on how Jackie Kennedy’s style is still being translated into today’s weddings.

Feng Shui

tips to harmonize your wedding...

Falling in Love with Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway) and meaning (wind and water) is the Chinese philosophical system that protects people from harm and bad energy. Can Feng Shui Help You Choose the Best Day for Your Wedding? To find the best date and time, a feng shui practitioner or Chinese astrologer will need you and your fiancé’s date of birth info, as well as the timeframe you are considering for your wedding. The process consists of matching your data (zodiac sign and feng shui element) with the same most favorable data of specific days and hours. You can find a qualified feng shui practitioner to do the best day selection for you or you can also do it yourself. A good book to help you is “Wedding Feng Shui: The Chinese Horoscopes Guide To Planning Your Wedding” written by Laura Lau and Theodora Lau. It helps you understand the date selection process, as well as offers a chart for best wedding dates. It’s your wedding day, and you want it to be filled with love, happiness and excitement. Incorporating Feng Shui into your wedding plans can contribute to bringing a feeling of harmony and loving energy that will bring a positive approach to your married life for years to come.

Here are 5 simple tips for a Feng Shui Wedding:

1 2

A lot of girls have dreamed of their wedding since they were young, and although white is the most popular color for bridal gowns, a cream color attracts good luck. Lots of bridal shops carry off-white or cream/champagne color gowns that are well-suited for a Feng Shui wedding.

The first thing to consider is your wedding date, ideally choose a date of the month with the number eight or nine in it, or numbers that add up to these. The number 8 means love and the number 9 means eternity in Chinese tradition. Therefore, the 18th of the month would be ideal because it has an 8 in it and adds up to the number 9. Some other dates to consider would be 17th., 19th., 28th and 29th.

Feng Shui

tips to harmonize your wedding...

3

Your wedding cake is an especially important element and should not be forgotten or overlooked when it comes to Feng Shui. Black and white is the perfect balance of ying and yang, but not every bride wants black on her wedding day, and that extends to her cake. If you’re comfortable with adding black to your cake then it’s an excellent color scheme to spark harmony in your married life. If not there are other methods. Three is the Feng Shui number of love so a three tiered wedding cake would be perfect. If you are celebrating your reception outside you should have a tall cake to celebrate marital growth. If your wedding is inside and the ceilings aren’t particularly high the cake should be shorter. Square cakes stand for a quiet romantic start to a marriage, while round or rectangular provide energy and excitement. Your wedding day is very important and you want everything to be perfect. By using these tips you can provide a sense of harmony on your wedding day that extends to your future married life.

4 5

The setup of your reception is important as well. Round or oval tables are perfect choices, and make sure the room is well lit. Dark areas hinder the life energy from flowing freely. If you can’t shine a light into a dark corner simply add some flowers to that area. Let’s talk about location. Normally, that is set in stone, if you are having a church wedding for example, no one is going to move the altar to the northeast corner of the church just because it is the corner for love and marriage!

So, what do you do? Use color to enhance important areas like this, be sure to place pink flowers in the northeast corner. Also, to represent the element of fire you can place candles in the north corner. Allow the energy to flow in the room by not crowding it in with seating.

ST yLE FILES Hot off the

Runway 2014

Bridal Fashion Week Spring 2014 showed off another

season of stunning aisle-worthy designs, all thanks to Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier and more. With each runway presentation came another “here comes the bride” moment. The show inspired countless oohs and aahs in response. From traditional cuts adorned with vintage lace veils to princess ball skirts with corsage embellished bodices to revealing back details on slim floor-length silhouettes, to tulle fishtail hems and decadent embroidery. Every bride will find The gown of their dreams this lineup.

Oscar de la Renta debuted his

bridal collection at New York’s Bridal Fashion Week. The result? The stuff dreams are made of. Looks ran the gamut from a southern belle-style blue and ivory silk organza floral embroidered gown with white tulle opera gloves, to a pretty in pink princess tulle gown with organza floral applique. Also on the ‘I Do’-ready roster: simple exercises in chic, like a Carolyn Bessette-style ivory silk crepe cowl back gown, or a silk Mikado gown with a tasteful take on the plunging neckline. Of course, there was plenty of lace to go around. Amidst the flowing lace, organza, and tulle that floated down the runway, the designer sent out a few darling flowergirls to sweetly sprinkle the Spring runway. Les petites filles wore frocks of the ivory pleated-silk organza and ruffled variety, as well as ivory silk faille butterfly applique dresses, all of which were crowned with bows and floral halos. The effect? Angelic, and compounding on the ethereal, pristine perfection of de la Renta’s latest walk down the aisle.

A year of Somethings!

something old, something new! something borrowed, something blue!

The tradition of something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue has been long honored by brides and the wedding industry. The tradition comes from an Old English rhyme and encourages brides-to-be to add four items to their ensemble for good luck.

something old!

Representing continuity which is not synonymous with something boring! Get creative and find a way to incorporate a trendy vintage piece into your wardrobe, carry a family heirloom or make an entrance via nostalgic transportation. Arrive in a classic car, Carry a romantic vintage clutch, Take a trip down memory lane with photos at your gift table, Give each guest an old penny to make a wish. Love is timeless.

something new!

Representing optimism for the future is the perfect excuse to treat yourself and add a touch of sparkle or uniqueness to your walk down the aisle. Splurge on a necklace that adds extra bling to your dress, Think ahead and pick up a parasol as a prop (and shade) for outdoor photos, Purchase a pretty compact for touch ups throughout the day, Add a new charm to a bracelet to symbolize a new chapter of your life.

something borrowed!

Represents borrowed happiness. Some brides use a borrowed item from a long-time happily married couple for this item, but it can also be something borrowed from a friend or other relative who is symbolic of happiness. The borrowed item should be returned to the owner following the wedding day. Borrow the song from the bride’s (or groom’s) parents’ wedding to dance to, Borrow a headpiece or hair baubles, Wear borrowed jewelry from a happily married gal pal.

The Blossom Collection from www.ellisbridals.co.uk

something blue!

Represents purity, love and fidelity. Some brides think this is the most difficult part of the tradition to incorporate, but the wide variety of shades make a touch of blue easily attainable for just about any bride. Commemorate the day by embroidering it in blue on the underside of your gown, Carry out the tradition with a blue bouquet stem wrap, Opt for an embroidered blue garter. Cinderella proved a pair of shoes can change your life, so mark the start of your married life with some blue pumps. Outfit your bridesmaids in a beautiful pale blue, deep navy or any shade in between.

over the Threshold inspiration room

What inspires you to create a room? Our Editor in Chief re-designed her beach house recently utilizing something very unique. Her inspiration, the new summer collection of Michael Kors handbags. The cool yellows and bright whites are a true inspiration for a total room decor makeover. What inspires you? Try taking a favorite fashion piece and let your creative juices flow. You just may be surprised at the results. When my eyes first glanced on the Michael Kors purse, it was love at first sight! As the editor of Florida Bride Magazine I am always looking for new and creative thoughts, and designing a room around a designer purse seemed to be ideal. I knew the look of my living space would have to changed, and painting the room would be where to begin. I chose a soft pastel yellow from the color wheel at Lowe’s for the walls, and left the beams on the ceiling white. Now it was time to clear out the room of all of the furniture and start again. No shopping day would be complete if you do not visit Pier 1. When I walked in, there they were yellow and white stripe pillows, how perfect was that!!!

v

v

Then on to Ashley Furniture. There I bought 2 white leather love seats that fit perfectly in the space. I found these beautiful sculpted tall white vases for the sides of the loveseat, and completed the look with these lovely yellow silk florals at Z Gallerie in Boca Raton.

I also found the accessories for the shelves, yellow lanterns and vases. Now, it was time to take a step back and see what else was needed.

v

“Inspiration is everywhere and can be found all around you. Happy Designing!”

This ultra modern eyecatching mirror was the perfect choice to complete the look.

v

v

The next stop on my journey was to IKEA where I found the perfect white entertainment console, coffee table and book shelves.

over the Threshold findingyleyour what to do?

personal st

What to do, what to do? Matching purses and shoes has become a very important part of a woman’s daily lifestyle. Knowing how to do this with confidence and style will make you the envy of your friends.

coordinate

Should you coordinate your shoe color with the color of your purse? Some women think the answer is a definite yes, while other very savvy fashion conscious ladies think the answer is completely opposite. We have reached out to a few fashion designers to help answer that question and end the dilemma. Here is what they have to say:

power shop!

The size of the bag is the first thing for you to consider. Let’s say you have a hectic schedule for the day and you are wearing boots, then you must accessorize with a giant leather bag. What the color is of the bag really doesn’t matter, just the size of the bag is important. For a professional look black, brown or white is recommended. If you are wearing wedges, flats, heels or sneakers, a long strap bag in a chocolate or olive green color is a perfect choice. Cute and fun bags are the way to go for a day at the beach or a picnic in the park. The material is light weight and feels like a soft cloth. The bags are inexpensive, come in bright colors, and are easy to match with sandals or flip flops. Going shopping with the girls? Stand out from the crowd, but still show your practicality as well. Big, bulky bags are a good choice, they provide plenty of space to carry all of the items you need for the day. When on a power shopping day flat shoes are preferable to wear, you don’t want to get tired too soon, there are a lot of shops to see.

cocktail hour

!

quick tip

For a cocktail hour or a formal dinner a simple clutch is oh so chic with the classic stiletto! If you are unable to find a clutch that matches perfectly with the color of your dress, choose a contrast color that is in your dress and then match your bag with your shoes.

gs Cute, fun ba the for a day at beach!

Writing

the

PERFECT VOWS rehearsed and recited in front of your closest family and friends on a day that will be one of the most important of your life. Relax and take a deep breath. We know it can be somewhat intimidating… but imagine penning your own wedding vows with promises from the heart. That incentive will make the task worthwhile.

Writing Your Wedding Vows Looking for ways to personalize your wedding ceremony? Consider incorporating your own chosen words into this momentous occasion, and build the foundation for a life-long relationship. Writing your own wedding vows is definitely an ambitious undertaking. You must determine the perfect words to say and those words must be

Get Approval - Talk to your officiant to make sure personal vows can be incorporated. Some religions object to non-secular expressions during the wedding ceremony. Submit your personalized vows to your officiant for review before the big day; he or she may have specific suggestions and helpful ideas.

Establish an Estimated Length - Your audience will find it odd and even funny if you ramble on for 5 minutes while your partner says only10 words.

To the Point - Overly lengthy wedding vows may lose your audience and will only increase the potential for errors.

Review With Friends or Family - You can rehearse with each other, or if you’d rather keep them a surprise, read your vows to a trusted member of the bridal party.

Use a Cheat Sheet - Even if you plan to memorize them, your nerves may get the better of you when the big moment arrives. To avoid an awkward situation at the wedding ceremony, bring a cheat sheet just in case.

Use your past - A trip down memory lane. Start writing down details of special events in your relationship first meeting, first date, first kiss, etc. What made you fall in love? Are there special milestones in your relationship that brought you here today?

Before Starting Your Vows…

What to Say? Suffering from a case of writer’s block? To get you started, here are some useful ideas and resources to spark your creativity.

See the future - What challenges and achievements do you see in the future, and how do you expect to handle those things together?

Complete me - I Know, it’s a line from a movie, but there’s a reason for its now cliche status. How does he/she make you a better person? Don’t forget that marriage should be about being two individual people coming together in a beautiful union, not about relying on that person to make your life complete.

Using the right words - Compile your notes, and memories. Begin turning words into sentences, and finally sentences into wedding vows. Consult your thesaurus for the perfect expressions to reflect your thoughts. Some basic words to get you started: love, trust, support, strength, encourage, respect, cherish, admire, value, and promise. Choosing the right words is so important when it comes to those Borrow from special words that will last forever. ooks, &

SAY YES TO

MONTE

a true Southern Gentleman

Monte Durham is the Fashion Director on Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta. He remarks, “My favorite brides are brides that will listen, and are open to my suggestions because that allows me to be the professional that I am. I know what looks good. I know how they should wear their hair. I know which veil will look good and where it should be placed. So I love brides that are open to possibilities.” Florida Bride Fall/Winter 2013 ♥ www.florida-bride.com 39

Why We’re Mad About Monte...

Monte has a passion and hands-on approach, attention to detail and calming demeanor that makes him a sought after bridal image consultant. His work has graced the pages of Elegant Bride, Washingtonian, The Washington Post, New York Times, Town and Country, and Florida Bride Magazine. Monte has been a featured expert on bridal fashion, hair, and make-up for Fox Network. Now he is a star of the TLC hit show “Say Yes To The Dress Atlanta”. An avid collector of Jacqueline Kennedy memorabilia, he resides in Virginia with his two Welsh Terriers who keep him company as he lends his sense of style to restoring an older home. Jackie holds a special place in my heart because she represents a vanishing breed. She was a strong, self-sufficient woman who endured a great personal tragedy, and she shouldered the grief of an entire nation. She was a mother who raised beautiful, successful children. She was a president’s wife with great taste and respect for her country who transformed the White House into an historical showcase. In addition to these magnificent feats of character, Jackie was through and through a poised and gracious woman. She knew just how to turn a phrase. She was at ease in any situation. She reveled in the challenge of serving a dual role as first lady and mother, she was invigorated by the challenge and always dressed and smiled for the occasion.

Q. A.

Monte’s Take... Say Yes to the Dress Atlanta is a hit show. Lori and you have a unique connection that shows on screen. How did the two of you meet? We met at a trunk show. I was a dress representative for a dress designer. Lori came in one day and I introduced myself to her. She looked at me and said, you will be in my store next week. After she left I asked someone “who was that woman that said I will be in her store next week?” They told me who she was and I was in her store the next week. As a matter of fact, I am the god-father to Lori’s granddaughter.

I want to be thought of as a true southern Gentleman. That in any situation I handled myself with dignity

Q. A. Q. A. Q. A.

You have been a personal shopper, salon owner, stylist and wedding planner. What do you envision for yourself in the future? I see myself as being more direct in the hair line area. I see my hair line products in major salons, and I may be in a salon again in the future. Who was your inspiration? I think you will agree that there are so many people that you can be inspired by. I would have to say that my grandparents and mom and dad inspired me the most. We come from very humble beginnings. My grandfather built a one story school house. We are from the country, and I was always taught to be the best I can be. There was always a saying in our home, “Can’t Never Could!” that’s a strong motto. It is very special when you have people around you telling you that, and being surrounded with love and support from them. Tell us what your favorite memory of growing up in West Virginia is. There are many favorite memories I can think of, but one stands out to me. In the summertime, we would be working in the gardens or painting the house, and I would wait all week long just to have some watermelon. My grandmother would buy a watermelon and store it in the cellar. After church on Sunday, the Reverend would stop by and she would bring it up from the cellar, and we would have a slice of that ice cold watermelon. Little things like that stay in your memory for a lifetime. I believe our roots always lead us home. When you go back, what legacy would you like to leave for your family? The most important thing I would like be remembered as is that I was kind and caring. I want to be thought of as a true southern Gentleman. That in any situation I handled myself with dignity, like the legacy that Jackie Kennedy left as always being a lady. When was the turning point when you knew you were going to leave home to pursue your career? I had just finished my first year in college, and it didn’t feel that it suited me well. Back then you were directed into the fields of being a doctor, lawyer or teacher. Right after my first year my sister was visiting and she was going to fly back to Colorado where she lived. I said to her, “why don’t I drive you back instead of you flying?” That’s when I knew it was time for me to get out on my own. When I got to Denver I Ianded a job in fashion merchandising and that has lead me to where I am today.

It’s an incredible thing to say “I Do” to someone, promising to be with them for life.

Thank you for sending me your products, I have been using them and absolutely Love them! My hair is so soft and shiny. I also love how when you line the different bottles up they spell Monte. M for the Moisturizing Shampoo, O for the One Step Conditioner, N for the Natural Lift mist, T for the Taming Balm and E for the Ever Hold hair spray, how unique! Will they be coming out onto the shelves soon? I am working on that currently, and can’t wait for everyone to get a chance to use them, and see the difference they can make in their hair. I know you are a big fan of Jackie Kennedy. How have you seen her style being translated in today’s weddings? At the last market the Great Gatsby was at the forefront of everything, but on the runway it was very Jackie. The straight chic skirts, the lace. The collection had a very strong take on the sixties. Do you have a favorite style or era of wedding? The styles of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s really stand out to me. I am really fascinated by tradition. A time when girls wore their mothers’ gowns, and the era when they even refurbished their gowns and made them into evening gowns. I like when rituals are religiously followed, tradition is very important. That doesn’t mean that you have to have a church wedding, but tradition can be brought into any style or theme. Maybe you hold your wedding on your mother’s birthday, whatever you do make it have a special meaning to you. Do you have any tips for our Florida Brides? Yes, when you are having your wedding in the bright sun where the climate allows for that, be mindful of your makeup. Perhaps instead of using black eye shadow and liner you opt for brown. It will still give you the dramatic look you are going for, but it will soften it. If you are outside for your wedding day having your hair pinned up will give you a clean and classic look. You can put your hair down for the reception. Take a look at the gown you’re wearing, and make sure that if you do choose to wear your hair down that it doesn’t interfere with the neckline of the gown.

Let everyone know from the moment they open their invitation what type of wedding it is going to be.

What can we expect to see from “The Full Monte?” Always expect to see Honesty and Directness on my menu. There are some things coming down the pike, maybe a book. Returning to my home state as much as possible is on my list. Is there a spinoff you would like us to introduce? TLC is keeping everything close to their chest, and not releasing any information yet, but we are going to be going into our 7th season soon, we are thrilled that everyone loves the show. Keep watching, we have a lot of surprises coming up. Are there any suggestions you would like to give to future brides?

Q. A.

Yes, there are a lot of brides when searching for their gown are expecting that Aha moment. With so many choices out there now, you may feel frustrated when trying on so many. For instance, there are over a thousand dresses at Bridals by Lori. If you begin to feel frustrated step away! Take some time to look at bridesmaids’ dresses, flowers, and invitations to get a clearer vision. Once you know what theme and colors you want, it will help encourage you to choose your gown. If you are having a beach theme wedding look for favors with shells, if your wedding is a barn theme then giving a small tree to plant would be great, if a cathedral style wedding you may want to give a gift that holds some historical value. The one thing that cannot be emphasized more is to always carry whatever your theme is from the invitation through your reception. Let everyone know from the moment they open their invitation what type of wedding it is going to be. As an example, if you are having a vintage style wedding an antique looking invitation with script writing would set the mood. In conclusion, Monte is there anything you would like to add? I would like to say to all of the future brides out there that are going to be walking up the aisle, to remember to “Keep Calm and Carry On”. It’s an incredible thing to say “I Do” to someone, promising to be with them for life. My parents will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on September 19th., that is truly amazing! Lazaro wants to make my mother a beautiful gown for the event. My wish for you is to have the same long and wonderful lives together.

from the editor In conclusion, as the editor of Florida Bride Magazine I can only say that in the amount of time I have spent with Monte, I feel that I could truly be his friend. He is easy to talk to, energetic and full of life. He shows a great respect and appreciation for the people who have helped guide him. The title of a True Southern Gentleman is not hard for him to attain at all.

In my opinion, he already is.

the great

Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows a cast of characters living in the fictional town of West Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922.

The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. Considered to be Fitzgerald’s magnum opus, The Great Gatsby explores themes of idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait of the Jazz Age that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream.

46 Florida Bride Fall/Winter 2013 ♼ www.florida-bride.com

the great gatsby Fitzgerald, inspired by the parties he had attended while visiting Long Island’s north shore, began planning the novel in 1923 desiring to produce, in his words, “something new—something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned.” Set in the roaring 1920s, Baz Lurhmann’s on-screen adaption of The Great Gatsby has already got brides-to-be excited about recreating this iconic look for their own big day. The Gatsby look is all about vintage, with ivory, white and pastel pink hues, all finished off with lots of glamour and sparkle. Recreate your very own Gatsby-inspired day with vintage bird cage centerpieces, pink and white hanging orchids and pastel-colored macarons, just like Leo’s below! If you have read the original novel, or seen the new hit motion picture, you know why The Great Gatsby is all the rage. With the 1920s setting comes impressive mansions, extravagant parties and of course, the glamour of twenties fashion and style. What better way to celebrate the novel, book or era than to bring the Gatsby theme to your wedding?

YOUR

GATSBY STYLE

Can’t repeat the past?… Why of course you can!

The Gatsby era was known for unprecendented economic prosperity. The evolution of jazz, glitter, flappers, classic cars and a raucous roaring 20’s good time. The Prohibition era was a time in which alcohol was illegal, no matter how old you were. The use of colors in the Great Gatsby. The word Golden stands for richness, being happy or prosperous, successful. Golden days, golden ages. At Gatsby parties even the turkeys turn to gold. The car The Great Gatsby drove is not specified. It is described as a rich cream color, bright with nickel, swollen here and there with its monstrous length. Many expensive cars were custom built for their wealthy owners. The Auburn was a top luxury car at the time as was the Austin 20 Touring car that cost $695.00 back then. The Austin Coupe $850, The Austin Landaulet ($875) Cadillac Victoria ($4540) Packard Single 6 ($2975) Drinks like the Watermelon daiquiri and Watermelon lemonade were popular during the era.

This styled Gatsby shoot came from our friends at Alexi Shields Photography. The creative team really wanted to take the classic look of the Great Gatsby era and put a modern twist on it, very much like the movie. A very modern venue was chosen for the shoot to really show the darkness of what the Great Gatsby was truly about. The tablescape was not only elaborate and elegant, but it set the mood for what we imagined a wedding or fancy Gatsby dinner would be like. Feathers and jewel tones definitely took center stage when designing the flower arrangements, cake and overall vision. The bride was a bit more of the traditional look from that era. The team wanted her to have almost an attitude about her which is why she was directed to pose always at a safe distance from the groom. From extravagant Champagne towers, to Old Hollywood-inspired dresses, and even cakes flecked with gold, we’ve rounded up our favorite wedding ideas that evoke the dramatic opulence of The Roaring Twenties. A palette of Golds, reds and deep blue is just right for a glamorous Gatsby wedding celebration. Nothing channels 1920s opulence quite like a towering candle centerpiece at your celebration. A mix of bold metallics with a few sparkly flashes will take your wedding details from understated to out of this world. A curve-hugging silhouette and glittering embellishments make this Badgley Mischka gown shine with vintage glamour. Lush floral centerpiece arrangements in red and gold top your reception tables. The possibilities of this theme are endless. You can also take the event to the glamour extreme, using deep colors with gold filagree accents and as many chandeliers as your space can hold.

DOUBLE

DIVAS

changing the world... one cup at a time

Cynthia Decker and Molly Hopkins, reality television’s most uplifting duo, are back in Lifetime’s hilarious unscripted program “Double Divas”!! The one-of-a-kind docuseries offers an eye-opening peek into the world of intimate apparel at Cynthia’s and Molly’s renowned Atlanta boutique LiviRae Lingerie, where the motto is: “No bust too big or small. We fit them all!” Boasting a hilariously unfiltered cast that exudes Southern charm and hospitality, “Double Divas” follows Molly and Cynthia displaying their natural talent assisting women with any and all intimate apparel needs. This season, the program will be bigger and better than ever, as the ladies continue their mission to change the world one cup at a time starting with none other than Abby Lee Miller, star of Lifetime’s hit reality series “Dance Moms,” who visits LiviRae for a bra-fitting of her own. We’ll also meet the Divas’ families, including special appearances by Cynthia’s father and Molly’s fiancé, giving viewers a peek at her trying on wedding dresses in true “Double Divas” fashion.

in season two Cynthia enters a contest where she must create a wedding gown out of toilet paper, tape and glue. Molly is modeling the dress!

“My passion is to help women...all women!” Cynthia says. “I want to spread the word on the health benefits of wearing the right wire and cup size.” Check out these bra tips straight from Molly and Cynthia:

And yes, it’s toilet paper!

Every women should own at least seven bras You should have a bra for every day of the week because you wear them every day of the week. If you think you’re a D, you’re probably a G. You should also have two to three basics, sport, strapless, sexy/fun and black lace bras. If it’s remotely visible, it’s not a secret. The newest trends are: high-waisted brief panty with garters, coupled with a retro bullet bra and sheer cups in neon colors. If you only have one bra, make it a black lace bra. Molly has some tips for all of our Brides: Before you ever buy a wedding gown you need to get fit for a longline or a strapless bra prior to going dress shopping. This will limit the alterations that may need to be done to the dress. Shapewear and undergarments are the most important thing when wedding dress shopping. Don’t assume that the dress store is going to have the undergarments you need.

Every bride needs a professional for undergarments as well. Most wedding dress shops and boutiques stop at a D cup! Happy dress and undergarment shopping!!

Clean simple lines with a sweetheart neckline, full or slim skirt with fabric details and vintage jewelry. Pearls are a must and the older the better, while hair will be natural in style and color and off the face. Makeup may be a bit over dramatic with bold reds for hands, feet and lips. Eyes should be soft and dreamy with a heavy liner and strong lashes. Headpieces are always a concern, with your hair off your face there are many options, headbands, combs, flowers and veils are a must.

Location is a big deciding factor, with the love of outdoors and family. Where better than ones back yard (providing there is a spot and parking)? A photo of you walking around in a garden, or as your guests mill about the refreshment table with a cup of punch. Serving fresh farm foods and fruit only to top it off with a cake from your families favorite bakery. There are many ways to give your wedding a Jackie look and feel, keeping it simple, relaxed and chic as well as including family and friends to share in your day. Make sure you greet every guest with a smile and grace the dance floor when asked.

look all over

With the Great Gatsby and vintage becoming all the rave, the classic look of the 1920’s has made its debut. It epitomizes one of our favorite decades with the Charleston, flappers, jazz and a new independence for women. In the Roaring Twenties short hair, heavily lined eyes and tiny puckered dark lips indicated a woman was modern and liberated. As women began entering the work force, publications encouraged them to wear makeup to look their best while competing with men for a job. Lips were painted in the shape of Cupid’s bow, bright cheeks were brushed with bright red blush and the eyes were kohl-rimmed. If you would like to update your look with some old Hollywood glamour, the dramatic look of the 20’s would be perfect. Here’s some tips and interesting nostalgia to make the 1920s face yours:

foundation: In the early twenties cream or ivory face powder was used by most women. By the middle of the 1920’s a color corresponding to the natural tone of your skin became popular.

eyes:

So, you thought the Smokey eye was a new trend….not so! Makeup for the eyes in the 1920’s was very dark. Eye lids were smeared with black eyeliner and topped with a dark gray eye shadow. To update and modernize the look use a different color, perhaps turquoise or plum. To further emphasis the look of the eyes the eyelashes were also painted.

lipstick:

When the metal lipstick container was invented in 1915 lipstick became more popular, and even back then there were indelible long-lasting lip stains. Lip gloss “Natural” was also invented, and the very popular cherry flavored lipstick was all the rave! *Helena Rubinstein created “Cupid’s Bow” a self-shaping lipstick that formed a perfect cupid’s bow when applied. The importance of makeup was only verified by the creation of the mirrored lipstick container. The colors that were in style at the time ranged from deep red to plum and orange. By the end of the twenties colors like raspberry, medium red and rose were the cat’s meow!

eyebrows:

Very popular were eyebrows that sloped downward and painted in with brown or black liner.

blush:

The elixir blushes of past years that were so messy got replaced by powders, liquids creams, and rouge papers. When spill-proof containers were invented powder blushes became even more popular. Rose and Raspberry were the fav colors of (rouge).

classics of the 1920’s mascara:

This crude method of applying mascara was very popular in the 20s, believe or not. Products like Vaseline were added into a mixture of coal and soot resulting in a dark gel that women applied to their lashes with a fine brush! This only goes to prove that we will do anything for beauty! By the middle of the decade mascara became available in other forms and applied with a brush. Even waterproof formulations were available by then.

nails: were painted in the center only, the half-moon and nail tip were left bare and white.

a new trend to start perhaps:

So, now when you think about your great great grandmother, she may not have been that plain Jane you thought she was. What’s old is now new again!

1920s Classics: Coco Chanel Perfume The House of Chanel did not merely revolutionize women’s fashion during the 1920’s, Coco Chanel perfume also branded and defined Chanel’s legacy and gave the world an iconic perfume: Chanel No. 5. Released in 1921 to some of Coco’s close friends, and then as a promotion to the “regulars” at Chanel’s Boutique, No. 5 was unique because it was derived from synthetic scents. Chanel wanted a perfume that was in her words “artificial”. This may sound bad to our modern ears, however we must take what Chanel said in context of her era. She wanted to break through the constraints and limitations of scents that previous perfumes were made. Before there were synthetics, perfume had to be applied very heavily and often throughout the evening since natural oils tended to diffuse quickly over time. Synthetics allowed the fragrance to remain on the wearer’s skin much longer than the “natural” perfumes.

Strange Weight-Loss Tricks That Work

Every little ounce helps when it comes to weight loss. If you’re in a rut with your diet-and-exercise routine and are looking for a little extra boost to help you meet your goals, then these strange weight-loss tricks just might work!

1

Dessert For Breakfast : If you’re going to have a treat, why not

have it in the morning? You know that favorite pastry that’s been calling your name. A study in overweight people who had lost weight on a diet found that those who ate a larger breakfast that included a sweet treat kept off more weight than those who ate a smaller breakfast with no treat. Why, you might ask? Well, the study discovered that by having a sugary treat at breakfast time it helped to curb sweet cravings that normally occur later in the day.

2 3 4

Slice Up Your Food: You may think you look silly cutting your food into tiny pieces, but the strategy may just work. A study found that cutting up your food may help trick your brain into thinking there’s more on the plate, which can translate into eating less while still feeling satisfied.

Workout in the Morning: Exercising no matter what time of day

is important, but if you need that little extra push when it comes to burning calories, then try exercising in the morning. Studies have found that people who exercise in the morning work out harder than those who exercise at other times in the day.

!

quick tip

helps Warm water r and you feel fulle less hungry!

Drink Warm Water: A glass of ice-cold water is definitely refreshing especially on a hot summer day here in Florida, but if you want to lose weight you may want to switch to warm water. Drinking a glass of warm water before a meal helps you feel fuller more quickly, so you may end up eating less food during your meal.

5

Eat More Often: It may seem counterintuitive,

but it can be true: eating more often can help you lose weight. Eating frequent meals - about five or six in a day - can boost your metabolism, and eating larger volumes of healthier foods that are full of lean protein, fiber, and other nutrients - rather than foods high in refined carbs and processed ingredients - helps give you energy and keep you full without all the calories.

of heaven

At many weddings, the wedding cake is just about as important as the wedding dress. For some, the wedding cake is a sign of prestige and wealth. For others, it is a symbol of the love between the bride and groom. And for many, it is a representation of the couple’s personalities, things that they find funny or hold dear in their lives. No matter what the reasoning behind the designs, there is no doubt that the wedding cake receives plenty of attention, not only when choosing the cake, but also when displaying this beautiful creation at the reception. Jennifer Johnson of Johnson’s Custom Cakes shares her tips on finding that perfect confectionary delight. It’s the last part of the wedding when the couple shares a sweet Beginning slice of cake together. First of all choose a baker that you feel comfortable with, I recommend more than one tasting. Explore your options, make sure you ask to look at the bakers past wedding cake pictures. Your Ideas are paramount in the initial designing of your cake. Do your homework! Google images that catch your eye, your colors in the wedding, what shape you prefer. Take inspiration from your dress or scrolls on your invitation. Do you have a certain monogram you would like? Bring all your inspirations to your tasting so the designer can make your dream cake a reality.

As Chef-Owner of one of the country’s finest couture cake studios, Ron Ben-Israel started his confectionery adventures after a fifteen-year career as a professional modern dancer. Upon retiring from performing with companies spanning three continents, he utilized his art background and ballet training into the discipline of pastry arts. When giving your local baker a photo of a cake from a magazine, make sure they are comfortable with the techniques and styles shown, and have tried them before.

Ron shares his favorite tips with Florida Bride Magazine

Share with your baker your particular tastes and personal style. This helps to personalize your wedding cake. Keep an open mind! Brides come in for consultations with one idea and leave with another. Insist on getting a detailed contract from your cake designer specifying the event date, delivery time, pricing and payment schedule. Your cake designer should describe in writing the size, style, décor and any other design elements of your cake. If you are planning a tented reception and air conditioning will not be available, discuss the timing carefully with your baker and caterer. You don’t want your cake to melt before the cutting ceremony! Florida Bride Fall/Winter 2013 ♥ www.florida-bride.com 67

up and coming designers “Cruisin Coastlines” Florida Bride Magazine is always on the lookout for unique one-of-a-kind designers. That’s just what we found from Cruisin Coastlines. This hand made line of jewelry depicts the beautiful Coastlines of Florida and other locations from around the world. Designer/creator, Jason Paul Marien found his inspiration from the beautiful waters around Florida and the Caribbean. Each piece is hand made in the USA with pride. Jason hand finishes his Gold and Sterling Silver jewelry to reveal the distinctive topography of the coastline. His most sought after pieces are enameled to mirror the beautiful colors that the ocean creates. Each piece will bring a person back to a memory of a location, whether it was on a beach where you were married or a sunset you have never forgotten. Jason has captured the wonder of each coastline and island chain and delivers it onto “wearable art.” He has spent a lifetime living, exploring, and relishing in the most breathtaking coastlines. A native of Sarasota, Florida, his love for the ocean began as a youngster, where open water and boating was part of the norm. The sandy, salty, crystal blue waters of coastal Florida, with beached boats and sand bars, all to partake in a good ole’ cruisin day. With an unmistakable appreciation for topography, Jason’s interest sparked when he saw how nautical maps intricately depicted the remarkable details of coastlines. A gemologist by degree and specialty jewelry designer for more than a decade, Jason’s ability to handcraft heirloom quality, one-of-a-kind jewelry using only the finest materials, such as diamonds and sapphires, paired with his love and admiration for the beauty of coastlines, brings to you Cruisin Coastlines.

“why not depict the coastline of where you plan on getting married?” Jason has gained outstanding media attention for his jewelry design and hand crafting talents. To this day he creates each and every piece of Cruisin Coastlines designer jewelry by hand in his Florida studio. A true mark of talent, a family man and adventurer, a passionate expert jewelry maker, Jason continues to awe and inspire as his hand crafted treasures gain widereaching attention with Cruisin Coastlines.

flapper style

Welcome back to the 1920’s where women were busy working

on their independence. To signify some of that independence, women started making major changes to their hairstyles as well as their appearance, cutting their hair shorter than ever before. Hemlines crept up to their knees and in some cases the thighs, while their hair started brushing the back of their necks and even shorter in some to above the ears.

To create this look takes a liitle practice or an easier way is to have a professional do it. Applying styling lotion to wet hair and allowing hair to air dry is best, so NOT to create volume. Once dry, set your hair with hot sticks (long rubber rods that heat and loop to close) these allow the hair to curl without volume. Set them in an alternating pattern, roll one up then down. Brush out with a boar bristle brush and then begin molding in the waves. This creates the famous finger wave that depicts the 1920’s and works best on short bobbed hair. On long hair the same applies. Just pull all your hair into a low bun and make sure to cover the bun with a hair net, and show off those sexy waves.

Florida Bride Fall/Winter 2013 ♥ www.florida-bride.com 71

The flapper style better known as the roaring twenties was a time when woman took charge. One of the ways woman did this is cutting their hair, making world news, hence the bob was born . Today, that style is much easier to achieve since resources are now at our fingertips.

Bling

Don’t make the same mistakes that countless others have made when buying a diamond. Read these common myths before you go ring shopping to be better prepared for the experience.

Top 5 Diamond Myths The better the clarity, the better the sparkle. The amount of sparkle that comes from a ring has more to do with its cut than its clarity. If a diamond is cut with exact precision, light is able to pass through it in all the optimum angles and reflect all the sparkle you expect from a diamond ring. Unless there are large, obvious imperfections in a ring, you won’t be able to see anything wrong with a ring that is slightly included. Slight inclusions can usually only be seen through a microscope, and do not affect the sparkle that the cut is giving the ring. Colorless is the best way to go. This is also not a necessity. On nearly colorless diamonds, you pay a fraction of the price that you would pay to have a diamond perfectly colorless. Diamonds will not appear to be yellow if they are slightly colored; most people cannot tell the difference at all.

Diamond certificates aren’t really important. Always get a certificate for what you have purchased, and the value of it. Because you are buying from this vendor, it is their responsibility to provide you with one, and under no circumstances should you have to pay to take it to get inspected yourself. This certificate is done by a 3rd party inspector and it ensures you that you are getting exactly the quality of diamond that you are being expected to pay for. Toast or Roast?

The Do’s

Wedding Etiquette... Do’s and Don’ts

The Wedding Toast The classic wedding toast is the rousing, funny, and slightly sentimental best man’s wedding toast. But he doesn’t have to be the only one to raise a glass to the happy couple! Here are the people you might want to ask to give a wedding toast:

The Best Man (or Groom’s Attendant) This is the one that’s most traditional, and is as close to non-optional as it gets. He makes people laugh a little bit, and maybe makes them cry when he talks about how much he loves the couple and adds some wise thoughts for their future.

The Maid of Honor (or Bride’s Attendant) Why should it only be the groom’s best friend who gets to tell funny stories and sweet sentiments? Though not traditional, it’s becoming far more common for the maid of honor also to give a short wedding speech. It can be similar to the best man’s but with her own personality and style.

The Parents If the bride’s father pays for the wedding, it is his job as host to welcome everyone and thank them for coming. Hopefully, he’s already shared the sentimental stuff at the rehearsal dinner so that this toast can be just a brief welcoming statement. However, if it was a joint effort to pay for the wedding, all of the parents may stand together as one of them gives a welcome on behalf of them all. If the couple has paid for the wedding entirely, then they can give this speech, but should omit any toasting.

The Happy Couple This isn’t really a wedding toast, as the couple can’t raise a glass to themselves. But it is nice if they take the mike for a few moments. If they write and give the toast together, then they say thanks to everyone for coming, and especially to their parents and wedding party for everything they’ve done. If only the groom gives the toast, he first thanks the guests, and then his parents. He not only thanks his new spouse’s parents, but he also expresses his happiness at being a part of their family. He finishes by turning to his bride, saying how proud he is to be her husband and how much he loves her. (And hopefully they finish off with a loving kiss!)

76 Florida Bride Fall/Winter 2013 ♥ www.florida-bride.com

The Don’ts Who Shouldn’t Give a Wedding Toast Anyone who’s drunk has no business on the microphone. Drunken wedding toasts are bound to be rambling, incoherent, and embarrassing. If your best man has gone overboard on cocktails, ask another groomsman to take him outside to sober up. With any luck, he’ll be able to give an eloquent and dignified speech before the night is through. If you’re not that lucky, then there’s no reason you can’t skip it. Better no speech at all than something mortifying! Tell your DJ or band leader not to give the mike to any unauthorized would-be toasters – even if they’re not drunk, you don’t need to allow anyone and everyone who’s feeling loquacious to take the floor. Save the honor for your nearest and dearest, and let other wellwishers express their feelings in a card! If you’re looking at your reception timeline, you may prefer to save more time for dancing, mingling, or eating, rather than having so many wedding toasts. Certainly, you’re not required to have any at all. More commonly, however, is to just have the best man’s speech, saving ould any other tributes for the The Groom shk his n a always th rehearsal dinner. e
