When I spoke with Randy his bubbly personality filled the air. He is not one to hold back, he loves to share his vast knowledge with brides to make them feel good about themselves, and we are fortunate to have him share his vast knowledge of the bridal industry with our readers. The History of Halloween H
alloween is a time of celebration and superstition. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs. That’s how All Saints’ Day came about.
The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve, and what we now know as Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a community event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating. What about Halloween traditions you may be asking, where did they come from? Well, many obsolete rituals focused on the future instead of the past. In 18th century Ireland for instance, a matchmaking cook might bury a ring in her mashed potatoes on halloween night, hoping to bring true love to the diner who found it! In Scotland, fortune-tellers recommended that a single woman name a hazelnut for each of her suitors, then toss the nuts into the fireplace. The nut that burned to ashes rather than popping or exploding, so the story went, represented the girl’s future husband. Another tale had it that if a young woman ate a sugary concoction made out of walnuts, hazelnuts and nutmeg before bed on Halloween night she would dream about her future husband. Young women tossed apple-peels over their shoulders, hoping that the peels would fall on the floor in the shape of their future husbands’ initials, and tried to learn about their futures by peering at egg yolks floating in a bowl of water. At some Halloween parties, the first guest to find a burr on a chestnut-hunt would be the first to marry.

or centuries All Hallows’ Eve has been a time to look into the future. A lot of marriage divinations had to do with apples. In Celtic tradition, the fruit was associated with female deities who controlled the way of love. This may have something to do with the inner structure of an apple. When you slice an apple in two, you can see a pentagram shape (a star with five points) on each half, around the core. The pentagram was an important shape for the ancient Celtics, and many other cultures. A popular sport for young unmarried people was to try to bite into an apple floating in water or hanging from a string. The first person to bite into the apple would be the next one to marry, sound similar to the bouquet toss that still plays a part in wedding receptions today? Apples are still a big part of Halloween celebrations. In addition to apple-bobbing, modern Halloween revelers drink apple cider, make candy apples and hand out apples to trick-or-treaters.

What a perfect compliment to a fall wedding with this great recipe. Ingredients 16 ounces country style sausage, 1/2 cup onion, minced , 1 garlic clove, minced , 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning, 1-2 cup fresh mushrooms, chopped , 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin, 5 cups chicken broth 1/2 cup milk, 1 cup light sour cream, 1/2 cup water. Directions In a large pot, brown sausage, drain, then add the onion, garlic, Italian seasoning and mushrooms and sauté until onions are translucent. Add the pumpkin and broth and mix well. Simmer 20-30 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the milk, sour cream and water.

Michael Lall Dass and Hana Razack met at Florida Atlantic University in October 2008, where they shared a Biology class. They happened to sit next to each other and became lab partners. They started studying together and their study dates led to actual dates (or as Hana likes to call them “mini dates” after class). Little did they know, the semester of fall 2008 would change both of their lives forever. Michael is now attending Pharmacy school and Hana is in Nursing school. Even though Michael lived in Wellington and Hana in Fort Lauderdale they never let distance keep them apart. Michael proposed to Hana during the fireworks at Seaworld in Orlando!
Their wedding reception was held September 1st, 2012 at the Borland Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Fl. Their engagement photos were taken at Riverwalk in Fort Lauderdale and Morikami Museum in Delray Beach. Hana and Michael chose Riverwalk for an urban style shoot. With rustic old Florida architecture the area lends itself to that Old Florida style they were looking for. At Morikami Museum Hana’s Indian attire blended perfectly with the oriental garden feel and colorful fauna of the tropics.

How to make It: Coat the bottom of a mug or an Irish coffee glass with honey, add the liquor and the juice of the lemon quarter. On the side heat water in a tea kettle, and add the tea bag to make hot tea. Pour the steaming tea into the glass and stir.

Black Martini: What You Need: 3 1/2 oz gin or vodka, 1/2 oz blackberry brandy or black raspberry liqueur, lemon twist for garnish. How to Make It: Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice, shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass or serve on the rocks in an old-fashioned glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.
Graveyard Smash:
Goblin Mimosa: What You Need: Pulp-free Orange Juice, 2 oz Black Vodka, Cherries pitted, Cream Cheese. How to Make It: Fill a glass halfway with OJ. Pour black vodka over the back of a spoon so it runs down the side of the glass, rather than plunging into the juice and mixing right away.
What You Need: In a shaker, shake Ice, 2 oz vanilla or regular vodka with 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract added, 2 oz Frangelico, squirt of vegan chocolate.
For the “eyes” use pitted cherries stuffed with cream cheese. Cut up one cherry into tiny little pieces, and use those pieces as the pupils. Pierce the completed eyes over wooden toothpicks and place on the rim of the glass.

Preparation Sea Bass: Heat oil in sauté pan until almost smoking. Season fish with salt and pepper. Coat presentation side of sea bass with flour. Brown only presentation side of fish in sauté pan. Cut each piece of fish into 3 and place fish on sheet pan, coat top side with glaze. Cook in preheated oven at 375 until internal temp of 145 about 12 minutes.

Preparation Risotto:
1 C Arborio rice, 1 fresh mango, 2-3 C water, ¼ C Spanish onion chopped, 2 cloves fresh garlic minced, 2/3 C fresh grated Romano or parmesan cheese, 2 T canola oil, Salt and white pepper to taste, 4-8 oz pieces fresh sea bass, ½ C all purpose flour, 2 T canola oil, ¼ minors Caribbean Glaze, Salt and white pepper to taste, 12 grape tomatoes cut in half, ½ fresh mango chopped, 1 T fresh curly parsley, chopped, Salt and pepper.
Sweat garlic and onion in oil. Puree mango with 1 C water. Add rice to garlic and onion, stir to coat thoroughly. Add mango puree and bring to a simmer. Cook and continue to add water until rice is fully cooked, add cheese. Salt and pepper to taste.
Final Presentation: Place ¼ of risotto in center of each plate. Place 3 pieces of fish around risotto. Place roasted tomatoes and mango in center of plate. Finish with pinch of fresh parsley.

One of my favorite memories of being a child at Christmas time was when my family made popcorn balls. My cousins and I had so much fun together that I wanted to share with you the recipe, in hopes that you too will enjoy the tradition for the holiday season. Your Editor

7 quarts popped popcorn, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup light corn syrup, 1/4 cup water, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 3 tablespoons butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, Food coloring optional.
preparation Place popcorn in a large baking pan; keep warm in a 200° oven. In a heavy saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, water and salt. Cook over medium heat until a candy thermometer reads 235° (soft-ball stage). Remove from the heat. Add the butter, vanilla and food coloring if desired; stir until butter is melted. Immediately pour over popcorn and stir until evenly coated. When mixture is cool enough to handle, quickly shape into 3-in. balls, dipping hands in cold water to prevent sticking.

Preparation: Start with soaking the noodles in lukewarm water for at least 30 minutes or until soft. Drain and put aside. Heat the vegetable oil in a wok. Add the egg, stir to scramble and break up. Add the shrimp and garlic, stir.
Ingredients: 1/2 lb Shrimp, 1 Egg, 2 Tbsp Vegetable oil, 3 Cloves, minced garlic, 3 Tbsp Fish sauce, 2 Tbsp Sugar, 2 Tbsp Tamarind paste, 1/2 Package of dry Thai rice noodles, 2 Tbsp Pickled turnip, 1 1/2 Cup Bean Sprouts, 1 Cup Scallions, 2 Tbsp Crushed roasted peanuts, Thai Chili, pepper flakes to taste, Lime wedges for garnish.
Add the noodles, fish sauce, sugar, tamarind paste, pickled turnip and half of the crushed roasted peanut. Stir quickly to keep things from sticking. Add half of the bean sprouts and scallions. Stir until the noodles are soft, dry and throughly mixed. Pour onto a serving platter and garnish with the rest of the bean sprouts, scallions, crushed peanut and lime wedges.

She’s the one straightening your train during the ceremony, planning your bachelorette party, and entertaining your grandma at showers. Sometimes your choice for maid of honor is obvious, whether it’s your only sister or your best friend since birth. For other brides the choice can be a serious gray area that must be navigated delicately to avoid hurting feelings, or putting someone in an uncomfortable position. Etiquette standards for selecting your maid of honor have relaxed in recent years. It’s now socially acceptable to have co-maids of honor, or even one maid of honor and one matron of honor. Take the time to think over your options before you make a decision about who will be joining you at the altar.

Most etiquette guides say that the sister nearest in age to you should be your maid of honor. If you’re close to your sis and she’s responsible enough to handle the role, you can call it a day and move on to the cake-testing sessions! If your sister is much younger than you or isn’t very responsible, your decision isn’t quite so clear-cut. Some brides aren’t all that close with their sister(s) and would feel more comfortable asking a friend to fill the role. If you’re planning to bypass sis, talk to her about it first. Chances are she’ll understand, but you should be sure to include her as a bridesmaid. Just because you don’t have a sister doesn’t mean that a family member can’t serve as your maid of honor. It’s become much more common to see men stand up on behalf of the bride. If your brother is already serving as a groomsman, you can always turn to a female cousin you’re close to, or even ask your future sister-in-law to step in. Don’t feel obligated to ask your fiancé’s sister to be your maid of honor, although you should at least consider asking her to be a bridesmaid.

When speaking with Randy he told me he feels really grateful and truly blessed, and wants to thank all of the viewers that tune in and support the show. He hopes to represent us as a people in a positive light. Born on a cattle farm in Southern Illinois, Randy is the youngest of seven children. Driven by his fascination for design, Randy taught himself how to sew at the early age of 9. What was the driving force that lead you into fashion and moved you to New York? Lots of things, when I was nine years old my mother bought a sewing machine because she wanted to learn how to sew. She literally couldn’t put a hem in a terry cloth. She placed the sewing machine in my bedroom and told me not to touch it. One day I was looking at the machine and it looked pretty simple to me, I couldn’t understand why she didn’t get it. She had a McCalls pattern, so I got it out. My mother use to wear a blue and white outfit to work, so I got some material and made her an outfit and put it on a hanger. When she came home she asked where it came from and I told her that I made it. She loved it and ended up wearing it to work the next day and brought me home another pattern to make! I have always loved clothes. When I was an entertainer I use to make my own costumes. I moved to New York and enjoyed entertaining which helps me today being in front of a camera. I have been in thirty-three states across the country and have been on the Joan Rivers show. Randy to the Rescue is all about the bride, not me. I want to be a role model, a guiding voice to help people, to be the person to ask the right question of and help tell your story. There are three very important points that I try to communicate. Educate about style, Elevate your self-confidence and Empower throughout your entire life. I came from living on a farm, believe you can be anything!

When did you know that was the direction you wanted to go in? I always knew arts and theater was something I wanted to be a part of. I am the last of seven children and I think acting was helpful to me. I loved the arts and when I was young used twine to make plant holders and sold them. I also like to cook, bake cakes, paint and draw. I like to put myself in someone elses shoes to realize how they feel. Who was the designer you most admired while in design school and why? There were a few. Valentino was one of them, he always showed such great restraint. He never forced fashion on women and wanted them to look beautiful. Bob Mackey with his flashy designs was another one, also known for his designs on the Carol Burnett show. You have helped create and teach so many brides what the right look is for them. What does this give back to you?
Right now I am having the time of my life! I am enjoying every moment of what I do. I’m not a brain surgeon, I don’t save lives, I take someone and put them in front of a mirror and make them feel beautiful. It makes me feel good. I actually get choked up when I watch “Randy to the Rescue” because I know how much each of the brides have gone through, and I am so proud of the show. When I took the idea of the show to TLC I wanted to show a positive side to reality shows, since there are so many negative ones out there. The filming schedule is grueling, but well worth the effort. Your book “It’s All About The Dress” hit the shelf last year. I hear that it is doing well, is there another book in the future we can expect? I hope so even though I hate to read and write. It truly was a labor of love, but I have always believed that if you keep doing what is comfortable for you all of the time you won’t learn. You need to push yourself outside of the comfort zone to grow. Someone said to me Randy if Shakespeare were alive today he would have a hard time selling a book, but since you are on a reality show we will sell thousands! Every bride shares a common emotion, and that emotion is anxiety. There is something for every bride in the book, from twenty years old to sixty years old. From size two to twenty-two, it shares a common thread, that they all can look beautiful! Do you think a bride at the beginning of her planning should buy her gown first or wait until she has more of an idea of what her theme and colors are going to be for her wedding? I definitely think you should not buy your dress until you know the look you are going to have for your wedding. Have a vision, start off with the story of who you are. Everything you do at your wedding will show that to your guests. The moment you step out in your gown it will tell them what type of wedding it is going to be. Know your venue and take into account the season.

Randy, do you think you will start designing your own line of wedding gowns again? I don’t see that currently in the future. I did design for fifteen years and had my own line. I feel that not having my own line currently makes the brides able to trust me more because they know I am not trying to sell them my design of gown. My goal is to make sure that they look good in the dress they are going to wear on their wedding day, and that they absolutely love it! I have considered designing men’s wear though, so that may be a possibility. Your demeanor and personality seems to calm brides down on the show. Is this something that was learned or does it come natural to you? A little of both I suppose, and a lot learned during life by feeling what they are going through. When we were filming “Randy to the Rescue” in Cincinnati there was a bride named Robin. She was a powerful woman, her business was empowering women. She was afraid she was going to look weak and had to learn to let go. She wanted to see every single dress we had brought with us, all two hundred of them before she was satisfied. When she saw them all she felt better. Some people would have thought she was being fussy, but I try to feel what they are feeling and ultimately it is all about making her feel beautiful. Sometimes brides need a little reality check, I have had them say “what if I buy my gown today and something better comes in tomorrow?” I have to tell them new gowns come in everyday!

Coming from a relatively large family, there was probably a lot of sewing needing to be done. Did you find that your sewing ability came in handy? Yes, I learned myself, I read the pattern and instructions for the machine. One day I heard my father screaming about breaking a zipper and I fixed it. It just came naturally. Can we expect to see you in Florida in the near future?
Right now I am having the time of my life! I am enjoying every moment of what I do.

Here in Florida we host quite a lot of beach weddings, what style of dress would you suggest for a tropical beach setting?

Anything they want to wear! I have been speaking at a bridal symposium in the Cayman Islands for several years, and three times I have seen beach weddings while I was there. One bride was wearing a Pnina Tornai lace gown with a long train and crystals. Another one was wearing a Carolina Herrera satin gown with satin petals and another had on a gorgeous Oscar de la Renta gown. As a part of the ceremony there was suppose to be a cloth placed down on the sand for the couple to kneel on, but someone forgot to do it. I thought it was wonderful when it came to that part of the ceremony when it was time for her to kneel, the bride in her $8000 gown got right down in the sand, I was thinking “Yes!”. Wear the gown of your dreams, something completely unexpected, if you want, but remember No Stilettos on the beach, and take into consideration the heat. I have read your 7 tips to brides, would you like to add an 8th one? I would just like to add that there was a time when brides would wear whatever the trend was at that time. Now you can express yourself more freely to let everyone know who you are as an individual. Brides are becoming more and more creative, I see it even in their engagement photos. In closing do you have any advice for our Florida Bride Magazine readers that you would like to share? The great thing about Florida is its beautiful scenery and beaches, take advantage of it. There are so many luxurious hotels for your wedding venue, feel lucky that you have so many resources, like the ocean and palm trees, embrace it all. Aqua waters melting into aqua skies, orchids, air plant bouquets, historic inns and sparkly skulls all came together to create Andrew and Tonya’s peacefully beautiful wedding. Friends and family came together in Key West, Florida from Ireland and San Francisco to celebrate their wedding in true tropical style. The wedding ceremony and reception were held at the historic Southernmost House. Their ceremony was held on the patio just inches from the Atlantic and the reception was then held under the setting sun that faded into a nighttime reception illuminated by strands of bare bulbs hanging above.

Unique elements were used such as driftwood, orchids, framed poetry, air plants and sparkly skulls to create her centerpieces. When asked why she chose sparkly skulls she said simply, “ I like them!” She even had a skeleton bride and groom in a tux and wedding gown as her cake topper. The afternoon and evening strolled slowly by as everyone enjoyed a relaxing and beautiful wedding together.
“We met in a bar in SF called Martin Macks on the famous Haight Street in San Francisco. We worked there together on Saturday nights bar-tending for about two years and always ended up flirting so bad that the customers were asking when we would just get it over with and hook up. We have been together ever since and I think its going on 6 years.. but neither of us keep track of that sort of thing. We chose Key West because it was in the middle for everyone ( I am originally from Buffalo N.Y., he is from Cork, Ireland, and we still live right around the corner of where we met in San Francisco.

After talking for many hours, they began dating and two years after graduation, Brian planned a surprise whirlwind trip, for a mystery ‘journey’ back in time to all the memorable haunts they had visited during college. Megan and Brian also fell in love with the Ancient Spanish Monastery, the oldest structure in the nation and looked to Megan’s mother to coordinate the bridal weekend. A romantic lace dress by Pronovias and chandelier earrings echoed the theme of the historic and dramatic architecture while a Spanish guitarist greeted guests for the ceremony and cocktail hour in the tranquil gardens. Sangria became the color scheme for bridesmaid’s dresses and florals with tones of plum, peach, tangerine and salmon complementing a variety of ivory roses, calla lilies and green hydrangeas. Dueling pianos entertained guests in the open air courtyard while dining on fine cuisine including crab cakes, filet mignon and champagne chicken. A dessert buffet and video montage memorialized Megan’s grandfather. The candlelight evening ended with the couple being showered under a canopy of gold and silver sparklers.

BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” starring Audrey Hepburn as a young high-climbing socialite with a penchance for fashion is a 1960’s iconic movie. It is the epiphany of grace and style. To incorporate this theme into your wedding day, think elegance. A simple thin column dress with a scoop neckline is ideal, and definitely rock the pearls and the gloves. For a real take on the period go tea length or a full tea length skirt with a defined waistline and of course, the demure top. For your color theme think “Tiffany blue”. To get the feeling of Tiffany’s, pair it up with dove gray, black tuxedos and metallic silver accents and sparkling crystals…lots of bling! Your bridesmaids can wear black, gray or Tiffany blue with pearls. If you decide to wear gloves, have your attendants wear opera length gloves, also. If you wear long gloves, the style at the time was to wear a glitzy bracelet over the gloves. A small face veil with adornments on the side will match the era with the tiara. Audrey’s character in the movie always wore a tiara, and don’t forget the big sunglasses for pictures!
You can wear demure pumps or strappy shoes, or have your shoes dyed blue. The wedding is usually a late morning wedding with a breakfast brunch. Serve mimosas or a signature blue drink to match the décor. Add coffee and juices and have white gloved waiters pass finger foods, mini quiches, cheese puffs, etc. You will need music and a must to play is Henry Mancini’s music from the movie during dinner. For your first dance, have the DJ play “Moon River” the original recording. Decorate with over sized champagne glasses spilling over with pearls and crystals. For favors, buy small tiffany blue colored boxes and fill them with candy, wrap with a white satin bow to duplicate the look of one of those precious blue boxes. White tablecloths will showcase the simple blue framed table number and the box favors. Every girl loves a little bling so be sure to buy some great baubles to wear on the big day.

Erich and I met about 4 years ago at a mutual friends birthday party in Orlando. Erich mentioned to a friend he had a “quick crush” on me, but wasn’t acting interested at all as a part of his “game”, which worked! One thing led to another and we started dating. We dated for about 6 months long distance until I moved to Orlando, at that point I think we both knew this was heading in a more serious direction, and the rest is pretty much history. I tell him he is one my life’s most pleasant surprises. The Wedding theme pretty much chose us. We both had been to many weddings and knew what we did and didn’t want. When I envisioned our wedding day I just wanted it to be fun and not stuffy or uptight. I thought how cool it would be to have popcorn, cotton candy, caramel apples, with a twist vintage throughout. So we just decided to run with the vintage carnival/circus theme. We were definitely on a budget so we did a lot of antique and flea market shopping, and I tried to make as much as possible by hand to cut down on cost.

My mother-in-law made the tablecloths out of ikea fabric. We gave our ideas for the save the dates and invitations to a friend and they had them printed at a local print shop. I hand painted 120 mason jars with chalkboard paint to use as your drinking cup for the evening and as a part of the favors, my step dad built our bar and archway and we decorated it with fabric to look like the entrance to a carnival. Along with the candy bar I individually wrapped each table setting with paper candy. We decided to put our initials “BE” all over and incorporated all throughout the decor as our brand. Erich had his jackets made in Nottingham England while he was on tour, he was going for the British “teddy boy” scene that was popular in the 50/60s. My dress was a sample Jim Hjelm and came from a boutique store here in Orlando. I had my party dress as well as the flower girls dresses made. The food truck (the crooked spoon) we chose because we wanted a “gourmet fair food” feel.

Yves Saint Laurent, Dior, Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown and MAC makeup artists consulted with the Brides-to Be to perfect their wedding day look. Following their makeover, they each had professional photographs taken by Aaron Bristol Photography to capture their winning looks. When should a bride do her trial hair and makeup session?

Make sure you book your consultation and trial sessions well in advance of your wedding day. Speaking with a professional airbrush makeup artist and hairstylist is essential. Rather than trying to do it on your own, seek expert advice. An expert would ask the bride to bring a picture of her dress, and pictures that she likes of hair design and makeup.

Should the bride bring her gown to the session?
A.
She doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to bring her gown, but if she has her veil that would helpful. Pictures of her gown will suffice. The front and back of her gown are very important in deciding what would best compliment the bride. For instance, would she look best in an up-do, half-up, half-down or all down look? We also discuss extensions, color, highlight and the cut.

How do you make a decision on what is correct for each bride that comes to you, since they are all so different?
A.
As professional airbrush makeup artists, there are many factors which we consider in the application of makeup for example; the season of the year, the wedding location, whether your wedding is going to be held during the day or evening, the color of the wedding dress, your accessories, skin tone and even the color of your eyes. For instance, airbrush makeup is essential for high definition photography and videography. This type of makeup lasts for eight to ten hours, and will withstand the temperatures of South Florida.

Deborah Griffin is a New York based fashion designer, fashion illustrator, and artist. She grew up in Dallas, Texas obsessed with bridal after Princess Diana’s wedding at the age of 7 and then left to attend art school at Pratt in New York to study fashion design. While in college she interned with CFDA working behind the scenes at New York’s Fashion Week, as well as a design assistant at Vera Wang. After graduation she continued at Vera Wang, then freelanced with Nanette Lepore, and going on to spend 13 years at Amsale. ILLUSTRATIVE MOMENTS.COM

what’s in a sketch? It’s the most special dress you’ll probably ever wear

Bloggers began to take interest in her illustrations, and the concept took off. She began receiving orders from brides, maids of honor and grooms. One bride asked for 3 generations of wedding sketches with the intention of passing them down. Now people are requesting drawings of communion attire, prom dresses and favorite outfits. Every portrait pays special attention to the detail and Griffin loves being a part of the process. Brides are asked to send in a pictures, and Griffin does everything in her power to get it all perfect. It’s all about the fit and flare of the gown, and she presketches 3 or 4 poses to see what looks strongest on paper.
Deborah Griffin takes your wedding gown and turns it into a high-fashion sketch. Griffin, who is the artist behind Illustrative Moments, draws each rendering on a Bristol board using permanent artist ink, colored pencil and markers with accents of metallic. The illustrations have been given as gifts on the wedding day, anniversaries and special occasions like Valentines Day. As a visionary, Griffin saw a market for bridal portraits and created an Etsy shop last December. Orders immediately came in. “ I thought ‘What is going on here?’” said Griffin.

What colors and shapes are in right now? We’re doing lots of octagonal and square-shaped cakes with rounded edges, and some that are made up of alternating round and square tiers. The color combination of the moment is definitely café au lait and pale pink.
What exotic flavors are in? Nutella and tiramisu. Some wonderful flavor pairings, also, are white-chocolate mousse with hazelnut meringues, almond with caramel and, for summer, coconut with Key lime or blood orange is always delicious. One favorite has been chocolate and yellow cakes filled with caramel and vanilla crème.
Where do you get your inspiration? From the bride and groom. I always encourage them to point out things they love, whether it’s an old country inn where they once vacationed, or the arches in their reception room, or even the pattern on an heirloom tablecloth. Anything big or small that you love can become your starting point.
What should a couple look out for?
Wanting too much decoration. I love an ornate cake, but you need to make sure that you don’t have all of these elaborate elements—drapes, bows, embroidery, sparkles, flowers—fighting each other. You don’t want your cake to have that “I’m wearing all of my jewelry at the same time” feel.
What role does the cake play at the wedding? The cake is a major ornament at the reception, so it should be on display from the start, to be admired. I suggest the bride and groom don’t wait until the end of the party for the cake-cutting. They should cut their cake when everyone is seated for the main course; you’ve got a captive audience right there. The cake should immediately follow the main course and be served as dessert.

ingredients: The Dough: 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup blanched slivered almonds, toasted,

2 tablespoons finely chopped rosemary, 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon zest, 1/2 tsp salt, 2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter, softened, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon lemon juice. The Chocolate Drizzle: 5 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, 3 tablespoons water.
how to make them...
In a food processor, pulse 2 tablespoons of the flour with the almonds, chopped rosemary and lemon zest for 20 to 30 seconds or until the mixture is finely ground, but not a paste. Sift the remaining flour and salt together into a medium bowl. Stir in the almond mixture until the ingredients are mixed. Set aside. Beat the butter, granulated sugar and confectioners’ sugar in an electric mixer bowl at medium speed for about 2 minutes, or until light and fluffy. Reduce the speed to low and gradually add the flour mixture, beating until just combined. Stir in the vanilla and lemon juice. Shape the dough into a disk and wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until the dough is firm. Heat the oven to 300 degrees and position the rack in the center of the oven. Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness, adding only enough flour to prevent the dough from sticking. Cut with a 2-inch round cookie or biscuit cutter or a small novelty-shaped cookie cutter. Place the cut cookies about 1/2-inch apart. Bake 1 sheet at a time for about 20 minutes or until the shortbread is lightly browned underneath. Remove immediately to wire racks to cool. Cool the shortbread completely. Place the chocolate and the water in the top part of a double-boiler while the lower part is on the range with boiling water. Reduce the heat to low and stir until the chocolate is smooth and shiny, about two minutes. Dip one-half of each cookie into the melted chocolate and place them on a wire rack set over a cookie sheet to catch any drippings. Refrigerate for 1 hour to set chocolate.

Juliet Ames is a Baltimore, MD crafter who has enjoyed getting her hands dirty and making things since she was a small child. While she played with Lego’s and Play-Doh she would have never dreamed that one day she would break plates for a living! As an Inter-Disciplinary Craft major at Towson University, Ames took a peculiar mix of classes that exposed her to many different mediums from metal to glass to paper. After graduating in 2005 she decided to learn about the non-profit world of art and took a job at a local arts council. While surrounded by creative people at work, Ames couldn’t stay away from crafting for long! Inspired by her colleagues she dove back into the creative waters head first. Juliet’s first new project was a simple, mosaic that repurposed all of the plates she had collected from thrift shops over the years. When the mailbox was complete, Ames was left with a pile of broken plate shards that were begging for a new life. She wrapped one in solder and made a pendant out of it. The public demand for more pendants grew, and thus, The Broken Plate Pendant Co. was born. With encouragement from her friends in the crafting community, Ames attended her first craft show in November, 2006. She’s been hooked on breaking plates ever since!

It’s not just the bride that needs to get into shape for the wedding day! It’s time for you to bring out that bike and running shoes. If you haven’t been particularly active recently asking too much of your neglected muscles is asking for an injury as well. To help you with your exercising and injuries that are related with them we have comprised some great tips to help you out.
SHOULDER OR ARM PAIN
We love our volleyball on the beach, but shoulder pain can be associated with it. If you are experiencing shoulder or arm pain some hidden causes of it could be at the nerve roots. Nerve roots at the top of the spine supply motor and sensory function to your upper arms. When you bend or twist your neck, the nerves can be pinched. There is a simple fix to the problem, as the pain becomes less intense stand with your hands together behind your neck. Bend your neck back and squeeze your shoulder blades. Pause and return to the starting position. Work up to 10 reps. Once you’re pain-free, build neck strength by doing shrugs.
LOWER-BACK SPASMS
You threw out your back spreading mulch. Herniated disk? Maybe. But don’t visit your doctor just yet. The reason this could have happened could be due to weak or tight hamstrings, core muscles, glutes, or hip flexors. These can mess up your alignment and mechanics, forcing your back muscles to compensate and overextend. Use ice in the first 48 hours and stay mobile, eat after that and take aspirin or ibuprofen. As the pain eases, begin gentle hamstring, glute, core, and hip-flexor stretches. When you’re pain-free, add multidirectional lunges, core exercises, and body-weight squats.
HEEL AND ARCH PAIN
Walking and running are great exercises, and here in Florida we certainly do take advantage of our beautiful weather to do it. Invest in a good pair of shoes. Some causes for the pain can be the plantar fascia. It is connected to your heel bone, and so are your calf muscles by way of the Achilles tendon. Tight calves can stretch and strain it. To help you heal sit on the floor and put a foam roller under your right ankle, and keep your leg straight crossing your left leg over your right ankle. Keep your hands flat on the floor, roll forward so the foam is under your knee and roll back. Repeat for 3 minutes then switch legs.
INNER-THIGH PAIN
It feels like a groin strain, and it can be brought on by something as simple as your bike seat. Usually they improve, but if it doesn’t try some gentle stretching and get plenty of rest to help it heal. Apply ice in the first 48 hours and any activities that cause pain should be avoided. Athletes, especially hockey and soccer players, should incorporate adductor strengthening, pelvic stabilization and core strenghthening exercises into their workouts to prevent the occurrence of a pulled groin.
KNEE PAIN
Biking is a big sport here in Florida and of course knee pain can be associated with it. Pain around your knee makes you think tendinitis, arthritis, or a meniscus tear. If your hips, core, quads and glutes are underconditioned or out of balance your pelvis will wobble, stressing your knees when you run. To help fix your pain focus on dynamic rest. As your pain lessens, try squats, jump squats, multidirectional lunges, planks, and glute bridges to stabilize your pelvis. Start slowly and over several weeks, work your way to 10 to 12 reps and 2 or 3 sets every other day.
