UPD’s 6th Annual Toy Drive FGCU PHOTO
UPD asks for donations for its 6th Annual Toy Drive, which benefits children's hospitals across Florida and children in the area under residential medical care.
T
he University Police Department (UPD) is collecting toys, gift cards and monetary donations as part of its 6th Annual Toy Drive with Heroes Unmasked. Donations benefit children’s hospitals across Florida and children in the area who require residential medical care. UPD asks members of the FGCU community to dig deep, be generous and help support this cause. This year’s toy drive again features a competition among the faculty, staff and students to collect the greatest number of donations. The winners in each category will receive a plaque, and the overall winner will be mentioned on a plaque that hangs in UPD's lobby. All other participants will receive a certificate. Toy collection boxes are available on a firstcome, first-serve basis, and unwrapped toys, gift cards and money will be collected through Dec. 14. If your group, organization or department would like to participate (or receive more information), contact Detective Joe Anderson at janderson@fgcu.edu.

Time to celebrate
how your FGCU Eagle pride and join your colleagues at Alico Arena at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, for the formal installation of our fifth president, Aysegul Timur, Ph.D. We hope to fill the stands at Alico Arena for this time-honored tradition. A free, outdoor lunch will follow on the FGCU Soccer Field. Similar to a university commencement, the installation is a formal ceremony that includes speeches and processional marches of faculty and dignitaries in full academic regalia. The university-wide celebration is one of great joy, and it will mark FGCU’s achievements over the past 26 years and what lies ahead for the institution. During the ceremony, Timur will be installed with the articles and symbols of FGCU’s President’s Office, and she will take receipt of the presidential chain of office from the FGCU Board of Trustees. Presidents Emeriti Mike Martin, Wilson G. Bradshaw and Roy McTarnaghan plan to attend. Timur was unanimously confirmed as FGCU’s fifth president by the Florida Board of Governors on June 22, following her selection as president-elect by the FGCU Board of Trustees in May. For more information, including how to reserve free tickets, visit fgcu.edu/ inauguration.

TECH-SAVVY EAGLE
The visualization wall in the Wilson G. Bradshaw Library offers an immersive experience for FGCU faculty and students
T
he Wilson G. Bradshaw Library unveiled the cloud-based Visualization Wall by Haivision this spring. This centerpiece on the first floor of the library is a mammoth, extendable multimonitor Windows PC that is ideal for manipulating high-resolution data and images. The university imagined the design to be a research and teaching tool for both faculty and students to simultaneously and seamlessly present multiple sources — web browsers, highresolution images, video conferencing, data visualization applications, etc. — in various configurations of 2D and 3D and with the ability to customize to four sharing stations.
Matthew Losey, a coordinator in the Creative Commons Lab, is impressed with the capabilities of the system. “The system allows the user to move a live video that continually keeps playing without a buffer or the need to restart the video. The user can also overlay comparative images using graphics and maps,” he said. The easy-to-use system requires a USB drive or HDMI laptop

S
ince its founding in 2012, the FGCU Campus Food Pantry has been visited by FGCU students over 15,000 times, with a current average of 100 visits per week. With this high-usage statistic, the pantry needs donations now more than ever. Many students are experiencing food insecurity due to rising costs with inflation, and everything that goes with it. Food insecurity refers to the lack of access to enough food to fully meet basic needs at all times due to inadequate financial resources, which can happen to anyone at any point in time. It is important that students have all the food they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond. After all, food is fuel. So if you are looking for a place to donate to this holiday season, look no further. The pantry accepts shelf-stable food donations, as well as perishable items. There is a refrigerator and a freezer for the convenience of cold items and a basket for produce. Donors are encouraged to bring perishable items directly to the pantry in Modular 4, Room 32, during afternoon hours of operation: • •
Monday and Friday: noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Other locations on campus to drop off shelf-stable donations for the pantry are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday: •

DID YOU KNOW?
Alico Arena, yesterday and today
W
hen FGCU was in its infancy and getting its NCAA athletic programs off the ground, the coaches' offices were in old modular trailers on the edge of a recreation field next to North Lake Village. On Dec. 2, 2002, Alico Arena opened, and the new 131,000 square-foot complex, with a seating capacity of 4,500, beamed with pride as one of the largest athletic venues in Southwest Florida. Alico Arena isn’t only for our sports programs, though. On Jan. 31, 2002, The Beach Boys took the stage in Alico Arena! Commencement, high school graduations, trade shows, corporate events as well as renowned speakers, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell, former First Lady Laura Bush, former U.S. Vice Presidents Joe Biden and Dick Cheney, and poet and author Maya Angelou, have been hosted at the Arena. You can see the building and watch a game by purchasing tickets starting at $12 per person at the Ticket Office in the main entrance or you can order them online.
Students who successfully complete an industry-specific micro-credential earn a digital badge and a guaranteed interview with employeers.
A
new micro-credential is being launched in spring 2024 called Medical Device Professional Sales, and it is being offered in partnership with Arthrex. The program will prepare students to work directly with surgeons, who are using medical devices in the operating room. This is one of the ways FGCU is paving a path for the standard in offering microcredential/digital badges. Current offerings are in the following three categories: transferable skills, industry-specific, and continuing education and skills academy. Although all the credentials are created with upskilling and reskilling in mind, the industry-specific badges address skill gaps by creating bridges to industry by developing a more skilled workforce for those who successfully complete these credentials. The industry-specific microcredentials are aligned with FGCU creditbearing courses, but are earned after students complete courses. They are called FGCUplus and focus on the “Power of And.” FGCU currently offers the following industry-specific digital badges:

"Fundamentals of Medical Device Industry" with Arthrex "Fundamentals of Emotional Intelligence" with NeoGenomics "Essentials of Professional Sales" with Gartner "Revenue Management and Analytics in the Travel Industry" with Hertz "Design Thinking in Healthcare" with Lee Health
Students who successfully complete a micro-credential can showcase their skills electronically with a digital badge. These badges guarantee an interview with employers. FGCU faculty can champion student success and employability by encouraging students to pursue an additional qualification along with their diploma that can lead them toward a career with a leading industry partner in the region.
