WELCOME, BIENVENIDOS, BIEN VENI!

It is my utmost pleasure to welcome you to the 2023 iLEAD Summit, proudly brought to you by the Multicultural and Leadership Development Center (MLD), an office within CampUS Life at Florida Gulf Coast University. As the new Director of the MLD Center, I am so honored to be a part of this dedicated team. After having to cancel the Summit last year due to Hurricane Ian, this team has worked hard to come back with a quality experience that can transform your mindset and leadership – if you allow it!

While the global COVID pandemic and the impacts of multiple hurricanes to our area have taught us many things – wellness has stood out amongst them. “You can’t pour from an empty cup”, is a saying we hear all too often. But how can we fill our cups? How can we inspire those around us to do the same? And how do we navigate our spaces as aspiring leaders to ensure everyone has the access and tools to invest in their basic human right of wellness?

By attending today’s conference, whose theme is “The Champion Mindset: W.I.N. Now”, you are investing in your own wellness by leveling up your leadership. Regardless of track, all sessions will focus on Transformation for Wellness, Inspiration, and Navigation – all tools that I continually develop in my own leadership. I once sat in your shoes as a student leader wondering how I could lead others to a common goal and make positive change – I still do! I invite you to lean into this opportunity to learn, grow, and connect.

A huge shout out goes to the entire MLD team for their collaborative efforts. And a very special thank you to the MLD Graduate Associate, Emilee Perry, our student Champions of Change Ambassadors, and last but certainly not least, Alejandro Salais, who in his short time as Coordinator has leaned into the challenge and opportunity of bringing you this leadership experience and who embodies the Champion Mindset.

Thank you! ¡Gracias! Mèsi! I hope you have a wonderful time at the iLEAD Summit this year!

Traditional iLEAD Summit Track

The Traditional iLEAD Summit Track will follow the conference theme, The Champion Mindset: W.I.N. Now, and focus on Transformation for Wellness, Inspiration and Navigation. This track is open to all conference participants.

Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) Track

Navigating a predominantly white institution (PWI) as a Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) student can be difficult without the proper resources. As institutions across the nation increase their diversity recruitment efforts, we must examine our ability to support the BIPOC community while they are on campus. The purpose of this track is to empower BIPOC students to serve as Champions of Change by providing tools and resources to build power, influence, and leadership development through collective action.

Emerging

Students who have minimal or no leadership experience or social justice knowledge and want to discover the fundamentals of leadership and/or social justice.

Mentoring Programs Track

Engaged

Students who have some leadership and social justice experience/knowledge through involvement in previous programs, organizations or other on-campus opportunities and want further engagement.

The Mentoring Programs Affinity Track is for undergraduate FGCU Peer Mentors and Student Leaders who work with undergraduate mentees. This track will include opportunities for peer mentors to learn/engage in peer mentoring best practices, build their professional networks, and participate in team building and self-reflection exercises to help you identify and develop your leadership style.

Rising Leaders’ Academy Track

Enlightened

Students fully immersed in the culture of leadership and social justice and seek to expand potential by giving back to the FGCU campus and beyond.

Rising Leaders’ Academy focuses on supporting and engaging members who recently joined the Fraternity & Sorority Life community in leadershiporiented dialogue and activities. Participants will be able to learn more about Fraternity & Sorority Life including information on the four governing councils, what the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life does, and leadership opportunities within the community. Participants will be able to create authentic connections with each other while additionally having the opportunity to engage in other breakout sessions taking place during the conference.

THE CONTINUED MENTORSHIP EXPERIENCE

Navigating the college experience is challenging on it’s own. Mentors provide necessary support for students to navigate college. LEAD YOUR LIFE WITH A POWERFUL ADVANTAGE

Everyone has a leader inside of them but leadership is developed. Whether or not we become a leader of other people, we must lead ourselves every single day. If we aren’t intentional and deliberate about how we lead ourselves we allow the world around us to lead us. There are three things that pertain to every human being on the face of the earth, which are health, wealth and relationships. We may prioritize and value one over the other, but no matter what, we make decisions every single day that impact these three areas of our life. There are two keys to your success in all three of these components. Internal Awareness and External Awareness but it starts internally. I teach people how to take an in depth look at human behavior backed by a century’s worth of science and research that will give anyone a powerful advantage for the rest of their lives. In this presentation we are going to identify opportunity, take a deep dive into the five levels of leadership and how being able to lead ourselves fully will position us to lead our lives with a powerful advantage.

Alexandra Angel Pipitone, Valerie Garcia-Rea NETWORKING COMMUNITY BUILDING

This session will be focused on discussing networking as relationship and community building. BIPOC communities often learn about established networking models and strategies that are white-, and power-centered, that additionally undervalue or exclude existing BIPOC community networks. Student leaders will reflect on their own experiences and knowledge of networking and also begin to decolonize,or liberate, preconceived notions of networking.

STEPPING INTO COLLEGE WITH A FRESH PAIR AND FRESH MINDSET

Starting college can be overwhelming, but with the right kicks and mindset, you can make the transition as smooth as possible. In this workshop, we’ll help you prepare for the challenges and opportunities of college life by discussing practical strategies for success. With a focus on creating a positive, supportive environment, you’ll leave with a renewed sense of confidence and a fresh pair of sneakers to help you step into the next chapter of your life.

INSPIRATION FOR EMPATHETIC LEADERSHIP: A MINDFULNESS-BASED APPROACH FOR EXAMINING IMPLICIT BIAS

A mindful leader is someone who embodies presence by cultivating focus, clarity, creativity and empathy in their service of others. Research indicates that the application of mindfulness practice is one way in which we can identify and reduce our bias towards others. This will be an opportunity to engage in intentional exercises which prompt increased awareness of feelings and opens space for meaningful reflection and dialogue.

LEADERSHIP AS COURAGEOUS ADVOCACY

In this session I hope to have a conversation with future and current leaders within our community. In my view we cannot consider wellness unless EVERYONE feels valued and included. Being a good leader requires using their discretionary power to pursue policies that help address problems and/or give a voice to marginalized populations. That leadership is not JUST making difficult decisions but also taking the responsibility and accountability to address difficult conversations.
