‘ Twas the night before Christmas Inside the barn area fence Not a creature was stirring Not track maintenance
I recognized the harness And the reins were no mystery But those were sure reindeer “Track security is history!”
As I looked at it closer What a wonderful sight It was Santa on the left And me on the right
The hay nets were hung From the stall doors with care Hoping the guy with the sweet feed Soon would be there
Then out from the sleigh Jumped the driver dressed in red He looks at me smiling And says “Can you watch my sled?”
Donner was center The rest were in back And I don’t know who they were But there were elves in the sack
The horses were all standing Asleep in their bedding While the grooms played the tunes Of the Spanish Helen Redding (Soy mujer, me oigo rugir!)

He sprang to his sleigh To his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew To Calder then to Thistle.
In less than second He was back and set to go “How fast is this sleigh?” He said, “You’ll never know!
But then I heard him say With a laugh and a roar, “Happy Christmas to all And hit a pick four!”
With mama closing the tack room And I shutting light We took a look down the shed row Before calling it a night When suddenly we heard A bang and a clang It sounded as if The starting gate rang But the track was closed And the gate crew was drinking So I turned to mama while wonderin’ What was she thinking? Then a sudden red light And with little alarm I saw something land Atop the test barn It was the thoroughbred season! There were no sulkies around! So certainly this was A sleigh that we found 6 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2012

Kantharos to Ocala Stud Kantharos, the undefeated multiple graded stakes-winning juvenile by Lion Heart, has been relocated to J. Michael O'Farrell Jr.'s Ocala Stud to stand for the upcoming 2013 breeding season. The 4-yearold stallion had previously stood at Vinery Florida. “We're thrilled to have the opportunity to add an exciting young stallion prospect like Kantharos to our roster,” said O'Farrell. “I think everybody understands how dominant and precocious of a racehorse he was, as well as how physically good-looking of a stallion he is. But what sold me was how he's passing those looks down to his offspring. We have a couple of his first weanlings here on the farm and they're outstanding individuals, and we're hearing great things around town about his babies. It's always a good sign to see a stallion stamping them like he is.” A $250,000 purchase by Stonestreet Stables, Kantharos was one of the top 2-year-olds in the country in 2010. The handsome chestnut broke his maiden by 11¾ lengths at first asking in a sizzling :57 4/5 seconds at Churchill, before dominating the Bashford Manor S. (G3) by 9½ lengths at the end of the meet. Kantharos went on to win the Saratoga Special S. (G2) in another dominating performance winning by 7¼ lengths and completing an undefeated and untested juvenile campaign. Kantharos, whose first foals are weanlings of 2012, is by the perennial leading juvenile sire, Lion Heart, currently No. 3 on the 2012 Juvenile Sires list. He hails from the multiple graded stakes-producing Southern Halo mare, Contessa Halo. A 2013 fee for Kantharos will be announced at a later date. Kantharos

Brent & Crystal Fernung's Journeyman Stud announced 2013 fees for its 13-stallion roster, headlined by Wildcat Heir, Florida's Leading General Sire for two straight years, and Awesome of Course, a former Florida Champion Juvenile Sire. Wildcat Heir is one of two sires in the Sunshine State with current progeny earnings over the $4-million mark to date in 2012. Wildcat Heir has seven stakes winners this year, and again has sired multiple graded stakes winners. He will stand for $8,000 when foal stands and nurses. Awesome of Course has four stakes winners to date in 2012 despite just 21 starters, giving the Awesome Again sire an incredible 19% stakes winners to starters. His graded stakes horses include champion and multiple Grade 1 winner Awesome Feather, and Fort Loudon, winner of the Carry Back S. (G3) over Breeders' Cup Sprint champion Trinniberg. Awesome of Course will stand in 2013 for $7,500 when foal stands and nurses. Journeyman has added the exciting new stallion Jackson Bend for 2013. A multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire, Jackson Bend captured the Forego S. (G1) last year at Saratoga, and the Carter H. (G1) this year over Grade 1 winners Shackleford, Emcee and Caleb's Posse. Jackson Bend will stand for an initial fee of $5,000 stands and nurses. Journeyman is also home to Florida's No. 1 and No. 2 Freshman Sires of 2012: Circular Quay and Cowtown Cat. Circular Quay, currently No. 1 with nine winners to date, including stakes winner Verso a Verso, will stand for $4,000 stands and nurses. Cowtown 10 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2012

Captain Genius Smart in Sophomore Sprint Win Florida-bred Captain Genius won his first stakes race Nov. 13 when taking the $85,000 Sophomore Sprint at Mountaineer Park in Chester, W.V. Sent off as the even money favorite in the six furlong Sophomore Sprint for 3-yearolds, Captain Genius went right to the lead with jockey Deshawn Parker aboard. Caught in a three-horse speed battle with second choice Warrioroftheroses and long shot Jasizzle setting fractions of :22.23 for the first quarter-mile and :45.26 for the first half, Captain Genius was unable to get free of those two around the turn. As they turned for home however, Captain Genius began to draw clear and was an inspiring eight and-a-half lengths ahead of runner-up Jasizzle at the wire with Fleet Eagle getting up for third. Trained by Joe Woodward for Billy, Donna and Justin Hayes, Captain Genius won his third race in his last four starts with consecutive victories coming in August and September respectively against $20,200 allowance horses then $20,000 optional claimers at Mountaineer. The dark bay or brown son of Simon Pure and the Groovy mare Shiny Happy had his streak end when third against $33,700 allowance horses at Mountaineer on Sept. 30. Captain Genius was bred in Florida by Gail Rice of Reddick and has career earnings of $114,170.

Florida-bred Greed and Fear
MCCUE PHOTO
The results of the $125,000 Safely Kept Stakes run at Laurel Park Nov. 17, say Floridabred winner Greed and Fear ran the seven furlongs in 1:25.13 in defeating her eight rivals; which may not be entirely accurate. There is no dispute about the time of the race or whether the teletimer worked correctly. There was no claim of foul against Greed and Fear nor was the margin of victory in question. But it is safe to say that she covered more than
seven furlongs during the course of her victory. Breaking from the far outside post under jockey Horatio Karamanos, Greed and Fear took a quick turn to the right just after the start of the Safely Kept and was yet another four or five paths further out than her post nine as the fillies settled into the early stages of the race. Longshot Doe went to the lead with Heir Stream second just to her outside and Munnings Sister was a close up third. Racing along five-wide but in good stalking position in fourth was Greed and Fear. After a first quarter-mile in :23.35, Doe took the field into the far turn but could not keep up much longer as Los Ojitos snuck through a hole along the rail to get the lead with Heir Stream attacking Doe from three-wide. Looking the best of all at this point was Greed and Fear, who was passing horses with ease while racing four-wide. At the top of the stretch Los Ojitos and Greed and Fear hooked up while Doe was finished and Heir Stream was also not keeping pace with the two leaders. Those two battled down the stretch until inside the eighth pole when Greed and Fear began to pull away while favored Holiday Soiree made her late run. At the wire, Greed and Fear was a length 12 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2012
and one-quarter ahead of Holiday Soiree with Los Ojitos another half-length back in third. Heir Stream hung on for fourth while Doe could only manage seventh. “We saw a lot of speed in the race. I was to put her wherever she was comfortable, a couple of lengths behind. I did that and my filly did the rest,” Karamanos, who won his third race of the day in the Safely Kept, said. It was also the second consecutive win for Greed and Fear who defeated special weight maidens by six lengths at Belmont Park on Oct. 8 after finishing second in her three previous starts. After finishing sixth against maiden special weight company at Churchill Downs in her career debut on Oct. 30 last year, she would not be seen at the races again for another seven months. In June, Greed and Fear looked sharp off the long lay-off, finishing second against maidens, again at Churchill Downs. In her next start, Greed and Fear was dropped into maiden claiming company where she again could do no better than second, and was claimed for $50,000 from that Aug. 3 race by current trainer Rudy Rodriguez for owner Michael Dubb of Long Island, N.Y. In her first start for Rodriguez, Greed and Fear put in one more runner-up effort against special weight maidens, this time in a dead heat at Belmont Park in September before finally making it to the winners’ circle in her next race. Bred in Florida by Luis de Hechavarria at his El Batey Farm in Ocala, Greed Stratford Hill and Fear is by Bob and John and out of the Cobra King mare Chirimoya. She is also a graduate of the 2011 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company March Sale of Two Year Olds-in-Training where she was consigned by Hopple Horse and Cattle Co., Agent and sold for $140,000. The $60,000 winner’s check from the Safely Kept increased her career bankroll to $130,096.
Benny the Bull, who stood at Vinery Florida in Summerfield in 2012 before shuttling to Brazil, has returned to Florida and will stand in 2012 at Eugene Melnyk’s Winding Oaks Farm in Ocala. By Lucky Lionel and out of the Birdonthewire mare Comet Cat, Benny the Bull’s first crop will be 2-years-old in 2012. On the track, Benny the Bull was the North American champion sprinter in 2008 with victories in the Smile Sprint Handicap (G2), the True North Handicap (G2) and Sunshine Millions Sprint Stakes and was also a champion in Dubai that year based on his win in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-1). He also won the 2007 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash (G1) and retired with earnings of $2,353,430. The 2013 fee for Benny the Bull is $2,000. Florida-bred Stratford Hill has been retired from racing and will also stand the 2013 stallion season at Winding Oaks Farm. Bred and owned by Melnyk, Stratford Hill is a 5-year-old son of the sire of sires A.P. Indy and out of the Hennessy Benny the Bull mare Harmony Lodge and will stand for a fee of $3,500. The chestnut Stratford Hill was unsuccessful against maiden special weight company in his first two career starts at age three but came back strong as a 4-year-old, winning all four of his races that year. He culminated his career by winning the Grade 3 Shakertown Stakes at Keeneland in April of 2011. “Stratford Hill was undefeated in four starts for me,” trainer Todd Pletcher, who conditioned Stratford Hill during his 4-year-old year, said. “He showed exceptional speed for a son of A.P. Indy and had the potential to go to the top of his division.” LOUISE REINAGEL PHOTOS

Baffert Gets Generous With Florida-bred in Den’s Legacy opened up as they straightened away for home. When they got to the eighth pole, Den’s Legacy got the lead and went on to win by a half-length over Rising LegendGB, who had rallied from last. Finishing third was Shining Copper and the final time for the Generous was 1:36.32 over a firm turf course. “I knew this horse would go through wherever I pointed him,’’ said Gomez, who also won the 2007 Generous with The Leopard. “He’s pretty Florida-bred handy that way. He was Den’s Lagacy hitting the hole that wasn’t there yet. When the hole opened up, I told him, ‘let’s go.’ I just didn’t want to go from zero to 100 as fast as I could. I kind of pushed the gas pedal down and he kicked on. I didn’t want to get into him any more than I needed. I didn’t think that (Rising Legend) could get to me.” Mike Marlow, Baffert’s assistant, thought the Generous was Den’s Legacy most impressive performance. “When he turned for home and a hole opened up, he was right there quick,’’ said Marlow. “(Gomez) just asked him and he gave him a quick burst.’’ Bred in Florida by Gaye Swartz, Den’s Legacy now has two wins from seven starts with earnings of $161,350. The bay colt paid $4.60 to those who supported him at the mutuel windows with $2 win tickets. He also returned $3.00 to place and $2.40 to show. Rising Legend-GB paid $4.40 and $3.40 while Shining Copper paid $4.40 to show. BENOIT & ASSOCIATES PHOTO
Den’s Legacy was not quite good enough in three previous tries against stakes company but a fourth time was a charm. After Den’s Legacy broke his maiden on Del Mar’s Polytrack in August, trainer Bob Baffert came right back with the Floridabred son of Medaglia d’Oro to try the Grade 1 Front Runner Stakes at Santa Anita on dirt on Sept. 29 but could only manage a fifth behind winner Power Broker. Out of the War Chant mare, Sunshine Song, Den’s Legacy
then put in two runner-up performances in $100,000 Zuma Beach Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 8 and the $100,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Preview on Nov. 3. Not to be deterred, Den’s Legacy went into the Nov. 24 Generous Stakes as the 65 favorite and ran much that way with jockey Garrett Gomez aboard. Breaking from post four in the one mile Generous, Gomez settled Den’s Legacy into a stalking position in fourth behind pacesetter Dancin Upside Down. After fractions of :23.68 for the first two furlongs, :47.88 for the halfmile and three-quarters in 1:12.41, Gomez still had Den’s Legacy tucked inside behind the leaders around the far turn when a hole 14 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2012
Sovereign Farm of Ocala is Marion County’s Newest Thoroughbred Stud Farm A new stud farm will be opening this year in the Ocala area and will feature the stallions Field Commission, Motovato and Backtalk. Operating as Sovereign Farm of Ocala and located at 5350 SE 212 Ct. in Morriston, the new stallion station is under the care of Mary Beth Stanton and Dani Dougherty. Mary Beth Stanton DVM, Dipl. ACT, is a board certified reproduction specialist. Dani Dougherty is the stallion farm manager. Owned by a partnership, Field Commission will be standing his first year at stallion at Sovereign Farm of Ocala after retiring recently from racing. "We are very excited to introduce Field Commission to Florida for 2013 and that he will stand at Sovereign Farm of Ocala,” Ed Seltzer said. “Field Commission, a multiple graded stakes winner of over $1 million and incredibly athletic, won stakes on dirt, turf and synthetic. He has a great pedigree and is a tremendous physical type who will suit a wide range of mares." Michelle Hemingway of Team Valor also expressed the excitement over bringing Motovato to Sovereign Farm Ocala. "We at Team Valor are thrilled to be involved with Sovereign Farm in Ocala,” Hemingway said. “We are pleased that Motovato will have the opportunity to showcase himself as the stallion we believe he is. He is a tremendous son of Proud Citizen who comes from a speedy female family. He had tremendous speed which carried him over a mile. He showed everything you want in a race horse: speed, class, and determination. We believe he will carry this over to his progeny." Backtalk, who is owned by Gold Mark Farm, moves to Sovereign Farm Ocala for his second season at stud. “Gold Mark Farm is excited about the opportunity to stand our precocious stallion Backtalk at the newly established Sovereign Farm,” Todd Quast, General Manager of Gold Mark Farm said. “Backtalk was undefeated in his first three starts at Churchill Downs and Saratoga with two of the wins accomplished in prestigious graded stakes. We feel that Backtalk’s speed, early development, conformation, and pedigree will cross well with the hard knocking mares in Florida.”

His introductory fee will be $3,000 stands and nurses. “Overdriven was an immensely talented 2-year-old and showed serious signs of being special,” said O'Farrell. “He also happens to be a fantastic-looking individual, and by the right sire. I believe he's a natural for Florida and will be very well-received by breeders.”

Overdriven
Overdriven stamped himself as one of the leading 2-year-olds in North America in the summer of 2011. His debut garnered a lot of attention after he overcame a troubled start in a five-furlong maiden special weight heat at Belmont to blaze home a clear winner in :56 2/5, defeating next-out Saratoga track record-setter J C's Pride by 3½ lengths. Overdriven earned a rarely-seen 100 Beyer Speed Figure as a first-time starter, and moved on to Saratoga as the odds-on choice in the Sanford S. (G2) just three weeks later. In the Sanford, Overdriven again flashed his high cruising speed before dominating an over-matched group of juveniles in the stretch of the six-furlong stakes on opening weekend at Saratoga. His final margin of victory was 16 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2012
four lengths, earning the colt a 93 Beyer and making him the early favorite for Saratoga's Grade 1 Hopeful S. later in the meet. Prior to the Hopeful, Overdriven was forced to the sidelines for the remainder of his 2-year-old season due to a minor injury. In 2012, he overcame some setbacks to return to the races, but after incurring another setback that would sideline him for the remainder of year, the decision was made for him to be retired to stud. “Overdriven had tremendous potential, and everyone who's ever been around the horse has raved about him,” said Mike Repole. “It's a shame he didn't get the Grade 1 win that his talent showed. We were extremely confident training up to the Hopeful (G1) last year, and then he had the setback. It's exciting to stand a horse in Florida, especially at a farm with a tradition of top stallions like Ocala Stud. I plan on supporting Overdriven with mares, and I look forward to having the chance of buying some of his babies in future sales.” Trained by Todd Pletcher, Overdriven was weighted at 115 lbs. on the 2011 Experimental Free Handicap, above Grade 1 winners Alpha, Take Charge Indy and I'll Have Another. His 100 Beyer was one of only three triple-digit Beyers earned by a 2-year-old in 2011. “Overdriven was easily one of the best 2-year-olds in my barn last year,” said Pletcher. “He was so fast that he trained with some of my best older horses in the mornings. He could have been any kind, and he'll have the chance to be any kind of stallion when you consider his great combination of pedigree, ability and conformation. This colt has it all.” By Tale of the Cat, Overdriven was a $350,000 yearling out of multiple graded stakes-producer Air France, by French Deputy. Overdriven retires with earnings of $129,750, and joins leading 2-year-old sire Lion Heart as the only undefeated graded stakes-winning juveniles by Tale of the Cat with triple-digit Beyer speed standing at stud.
Longtime Conditioner Bennie Stutts Closes Curtain on Career While the sixth race at Calder Casino & Race Course on Nov. 24 offered the promise of juvenile fillies heading to the turf while still in the early stages of their career, the human narrative of the race centered on longtime trainer Bennie Stutts, Jr., who started recent maiden winner Iwillneversaynever in what would be the final race of the 74-year-old conditioner’s career. “It’s time,” Stutts said as he walked toward the paddock prior to the race. “I’m going to be 75 in February, and I think it’s time for me to have some fun away from the track for a while.” Born in the shadow of Fair Grounds racetrack in New Orleans in February 1938, Stutts was immersed in the racing business at the youngest of ages, schooled in the daily deeds of running a barn by his father Ben and his two uncles, Harry and George. “My father, who was born in 1908, was born and raised in Hot Springs, and the way the story goes, his older brother Harry was delivering papers on the track when this old trainer saw his small size and said ‘son, when you get done delivering those papers, I want you to come over and ride my old pony.’ “So my uncle watched and studied how to ride and gallop horses, and he was just a natural in the saddle. So he stayed on the track, and before long his brother, my father Ben, and then his younger brother George followed. And they all stayed on the racetrack.” While the college commencement of his daughter rates high on Stutts’ list of personal highlights, the professional high mark for the trainer was the horse Smooth Air. After breaking his maiden at Calder in his career debut, Smooth Air would go on to win the Grade 2 Hutcheson Stakes in his 3-year-old debut and would compete in both the 2008 Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic, while winning that year’s Grade 2 Ohio Derby. “And before all of that, he was second in the Florida Derby, which put him in the Derby to begin with,” Stutts recalled. “On the racetrack, there’s an old saying that ‘all it takes is one.’ And that one horse made my whole career.” After winning the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Handicap as a 4-year-old, Stutts sent Smooth Air to New York for the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap, where he was beaten a half-length for everything, finishing second. But with those horses now gone and Stutts beginning to feel some of the ill-effects of a life spent on the track, in the military, and playing high school football, the final act has arrived and it is time for the curtain to fall.

Gilbert, a native of Ankeny, Iowa, first met Hartley and DeRenzo at Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company auctions in the late 1990s when he was stallion manager for Walmac Farm in Lexington, Ky. In 2000, Hartley and DeRenzo began to stand stallions for Walmac under the banner of Walmac South and Gilbert consulted with them on a regular basis. “Mr. [John T.L. ] Jones [Jr.] had an airplane so I would often fly down here just to see if I could be any help,” Gilbert said of his first encounters with Hartley and DeRenzo. “I always thought that like Walmac, [Hartley and DeRenzo] were first class people who ran a first class operation.” Through the years Gilbert developed a relationship with Hartley and DeRenzo, but the thought of leaving Walmac was never a consideration. Gilbert, who began working at Walmac in 1980 in their sales prep division, eventually became their stallion manager, a title he held until his retirement just two years ago. Gilbert moved to the Ocala area with his wife Virginia, planning to take it easy. But the retirement life was not agreeing with the longtime horseman. “I always liked Florida,” Gilbert said. “I used to rent a house in the [Florida] Keys every year
and Virginia, the kids and I would be there during Christmas. And of course, I had spent plenty of time in Ocala traveling to the sales and working with Dean [DeRenzo] and Randy [Hartley]. So this is where I came to retire. “But it nearly drove me crazy. I would get up at 5:00 o’clock every morning and after I read the paper I had nothing to do. So I just started coming over here [to Hartley/DeRenzo Farm] and spent some time just helping were I could. Dean would often say to me that I should just start working here, but I guess I never really considered it.” Then Hartley/DeRenzo expanded their operation recently by purchasing the Hawkins Ridge Training Center adjacent to their farm. That acquisition led to Gilbert spending more and more time at Hartley/DeRenzo until September when the farm made his employment official. “Officially [Gilbert] started in September. But he’s been here a lot longer than that. He was here during the entire breeding season,” office manager Connie Fales said. “Ron has been such a great asset to us with his vast knowledge. He is willing to share and educate anybody that will listen. Because he thinks the more that they know, the better they can help him do his job. He brings so much to Hartley/deRenzo. We’re so grateful to have him.” Currently Gilbert is the manager of the training center, but Fales said that during breeding season, he will be spending additional time with the stallions. ■ THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2012 21

uring his 2012 campaign, Florida-bred Bernie the Maestro was claimed five different times. The last time he was claimed was when trainer Michael Maker dropped the $25,000 tag on him at Saratoga Aug. 4. “We lost the shake trying to claim [Bernie the Maestro] a few races before and we had to win the shake to get him that day, so we were very happy when we got him.” Maker said. “But we were lucky enough to get him because we had the [Rapid Transit] in mind when we did it.” The claim has been a good one so far for owner Kenneth L. and Sarah Ramsey of Lexington, Ky. In his first start for the new connections, Bernie the Maestro won a starter allowance at Keeneland on Oct. 25 by four lengths before winning the Rapid Transit. By Bernstein and out of the Doneraile Court mare Horah for Bailey, the 5-yearold gelding was let go as the 5-2 second choice in the $100,000 Rapid Transit, which was part of the Gulfstream Park’s opening day and the six-race $725,000 Claiming Crown on Dec 1. Breaking from post ten, Bernie the Maestro broke just behind early leaders Off the Jak and stablemate Won Fast Bullet and stalked those two down the backstretch while racing threewide. After fast fractions of :22.59 for the first quarter and :45.22 for the half-mile, Bernie the Maestro and jockey Joel Rosario went up to engage the early leaders after chasing them around the turn. Off the Jak remained strong as he and Bernie the Maestro raced together until the last eighth of-a-mile when Bernie the Maestro took the lead and began to draw off.

Florida-bred Brother Bird (below) claimed victory in the $100,000 Iron Horse Stakes while Parent’s Honor (top right) took the $200,000 Jewel Stakes as a 16-1 longshot. The fourth of the day for Ramsey and Maker, Starsilhouette won the $122,000 Tiara Stakes
At the wire, Bernie Maestro was just less than three lengths ahead of Off the Jak in second with Won Fast Bullet, also trained by Maker and owned by the Ramseys, third. Running time for the seven furlongs was 1:21.60 over the track that was rated fast. “That’s two in-a-row from the 13 hole,” Kenneth Ramsey said in the winners’ circle following the Rapid Transit. Ramsey had just won the $100,000 Iron Horse Stakes the race earlier with Brother Bird, who like Bernie the Maestro wore the brown 13 saddle towel. The victory also made Maker the all-time leading trainer in Claiming Crown races with nine career wins, passing Scott Lake for the record. “That was a perfect trip,” Maker said. “Speed was on the inside and Joel [Rosario] placed him perfect. I really liked him today based on his last race and this horse seems to really get good when you give him a little more time between races. It would have been better if we ran first and second, but I’m very happy with first and third. Bred in Florida by Sabine Stable, Bernie the Maes-
tro increased his earnings to $423,254 with the Rapid Transit victory and he returned $7.40 to win, $4.60 to place and $3.80 to show. Off the Jak paid $7.60 and $5.80 while Won Fast Bullet fans cashed for $6.60 for their $2 show tickets. But it was the Ramsey-Maker team that was the story of the day as the owner-trainer combined to win four of the six Claiming Crown races. In addition to the wins by Brother Bird and Bernie the Maestro, Ramsey and Maker won the $122,500 Tiara Stakes with Starsilhouette and the $200,000 Jewel Stakes with Parent’s Honor. Let go as a 16-1 longshot, Parent’s Honor was the most surprising of the Ramsey-Maker winners having finished fifth, beaten 11 lengths in the $50,000 Temperance Hill Stakes at Louisiana Downs in September then ninth, beaten more than 14 lengths in the $130,000 Mountaineer Mile at Mountaineer Park in New Cumberland, West Virginia. Claimed for $35,000 by Maker two races back, the trainer was happy to see Parent’s Honor finally show the talent he thought the 4-year-old gelding had when he took him to Saratoga in August.

“I’m very happy to see this horse win today,” Maker said. “He really had me shaking my head after his last two races. But he finally came through for me today.” Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey were the leading Claiming Crown owners coming into the Dec. 1 card with six winners in the previous 13 runnings. The four wins at Gulfstream Park brings their total to 10 winners and they just barely missed getting another when their Major Marvel missed winning the John Deere Emerald by just a head when second to winner Nikki’s Sandcastle. “Not bad winning four races with a second and third,” Kenneth Ramsey said after winning the Jewel Stakes. “We were six for 10 in the Claiming Crown before today and I really didn’t think we could improve on that percentage. But winning four in one day is tremendous. I know winning three is a hat trick, what’s four?” “A home run,” Maker responded. “No, make that a grand slam.” Maker added to his record as the all-time leading trainer of Claiming Crown races with the wins by Parent’s Honor and Starsilhouette, bringing his total to 11. ■

Mike O'Farrell Jr.'s sons, Joseph M. O'Farrell III and John David O'Farrell, have become the third generation of O'Farrells to be involved in the operation of Ocala Stud. By JOANN GUIDRY
B
rothers Joe and David O'Farrell have fully embraced the O'Farrell family tradition of operating Ocala Stud. Their grandfather Joe O'Farrell Sr. was part of a nine-member syndicate that established Ocala Stud in 1956. Their father, Mike O'Farrell Jr., took over running the now solely family-owned operation when he was but 22. Today, Joe, 34, is the farm's financial manager and David, 32, is the operation's farm manager. But, surprisingly enough, that the brothers would be in their current positions was not a certainty. Family time and sports, rather than thoroughbreds, were the focus of the brothers' lives growing up. “With my dad, family time was family time,” said Joe. “When Dad left the farm at the end of the day, he left the thoroughbred business at the farm.” To which David added, “My brother and I were both into sports from a very early age, so our parents stayed busy taking us to practices and games. Dad never pushed us to become involved in the farm business.” And for Mike O'Farrell, that was the plan all along. “I grew up in the thoroughbred business with my father and I always knew I wanted to be involved in the industry,” said Mike, 65, who serves as president and managing partner of the operation owned by himself, sisters Susan Greiner, Anna O'Farrell-Brown and 30 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2012
brother-in-law James Lewis. “But my wife Judy and I thought it was best to allow our sons to see that there were other opportunities out there. I didn't want to force them into the thoroughbred business. I wanted them to want to be in the thoroughbred business.” First Joe then David went off to Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina; both graduated with business degrees. When Joe graduated in 1999, he secured an accountant position with a bank and remained in South Carolina. David, whose interest in the thoroughbred business began to grow while in college, graduated in May 2003. By July, he was back home and working at Ocala Stud. “While I was in college, I started to track Ocala Studbred horses at the races,” said David. “And I started to become more and more interested in thoroughbred racing. I told my dad that as soon as I graduated, I wanted to come back and work on the farm.” For Joe, it was the thrill of an Ocala Stud-bred and sold horse doing well at the racetrack that led him back to the farm. While the O'Farrell family was on vacation at Saratoga in 2003, Chapel Royal won the Sanford Stakes (G2). By Ocala Stud stallion Montbrook out of the Cutlass mare Cut Class Leanne, Chapel Royal had been bred and then sold by Ocala Stud for $1.2 million at the 2003 Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's February juvenile sale at Calder. Chapel Royal also won the Flash Stakes (G3), was

second in the Champagne Stakes (G1) and Hopeful Stakes (G1), and third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) to earn $495,571. “I got really caught up in the excitement of Chapel Royal,” said Joe. “I started thinking that working for the farm might be more fulfilling than working at a bank.” By 2004, both David and Joe were working at Ocala Stud. “From day one, I told both David and Joe that there would be no free rides for them at Ocala Stud,” said Mike, who is currently the chairman of the OBS board of directors; he has also served multiple terms on the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association board of directors. “Just because their last name was O'Farrell didn't mean they weren't going have to work. But they didn't shy away from that, and now both are very involved in every aspect of the farm.”

David took the more hands-on approach, working his way through the broodmare, stallion, training and sales divisions on his way to becoming assistant farm manager. When longtime Ocala Stud farm manager Bob Noble retired this past July, David moved into that position. “I think it was inevitable that David was going to become the farm manager,” said Mike. “He worked his way up and earned the respect of both our employees and clients. David brings a great energy and love of the business to the mix.” It was an easy transition for David, who also handles the farms' stallion bookings during breeding season. He also works closely with longtime farm trainer George Burrows and broodmare manager Amanda Thompson-Gonzales. “My job is to make sure that everything runs as smoothly as possible everyday,” said David.

The 10-year-old Slew Gin Fizz mare is also the dam of Puerto Rican stakes winner Vuelve Ruben M. Candlelight Dinner produced a 2011 filly by Montbrook, a 2012 filly by Circular Quay and is in foal to Uncle Mo.

Tampa Bay Downs By MICHAEL CUSORTELLI
W
hen Tampa Bay Downs opened its 91-day meet on Dec. 1, the track was ranked second on the Horseplayers Association of North America's list of track ratings. Better known by its acronym “HANA,” the association is a non-profit organization that was formed to speak to track managements on behalf of horseplayers and to help them find value when they bet. Its ratings are based on several factors, primarily takeout rates, the availability of the track's signal in the simulcast market, wagering-pool sizes, and average field size. Tampa Bay Downs is ranked behind only Keeneland Racecourse, but ahead of such high-profile
payouts; the track's relatively low takeout rates have a lot to do with that. Consider the following example, comparing a hypothetical Tampa Bay pick-3 payout to one at Fair Grounds Racecourse in New Orleans, another track that races during the winter months but has a significantly higher 25-percent takeout rate. In our example, a total of $20,000 is wagered into our pick-3 pool, and there are 10 winning tickets. The amount of money to be redistributed to Fair Grounds players would be $15,000 ($20,000 minus 25 percent), but it would be $16,400 ($20,000 minus 18 percent) at Tampa Bay. Therefore, every holder of a winning ticket would get $1,640 at Tampa, compared to $1,500 at have Fair Grounds. Tampa Bay Downs tracks to bet. is also one of the nation's leaders in average field size. According to HANA's most recent rankings, the track's average field size sits at 9.04 starters per race, and this compares favorably to many other winter tracks, including Turfway Park (8.68), Sam Houston Race Park (8.55), Fair Grounds (8.31), Santa Anita Park (7.99), and Aqueduct (7.41). And even though Tampa Bay Downs' 2011-12 average daily all-sources handle dropped nearly 11 percent from the previous meet, the track still handled an average of $4.15 million per day, making it the fourth most popular winter signal in the country and placing it more than $1 million ahead of the fifth- and sixth-place tracks.

tracks as Churchill Downs, Arlington Park, Oaklawn Park, all of the New York Racing Association tracks (including Saratoga), and all three of the major southern California tracks. Starting with the takeout factor, Tampa Bay Downs' rates will be the same as they were for its 2011-12 meet: 17.5 percent for win, place, and show wagers; 18 percent for daily double, pick-3, pick-4, and super-high-5 wagers; 20.5 percent for exacta wagers; 25.9 percent for trifecta and superfecta wagers; and 15 percent for pick-5 wagers. Tampa Bay Downs has become a favorite track for winter raceplayers, and one of the reasons for this is its generous

On many days, Tampa Bay Downs has outhandled its major competitors for the wintertime wagering dollar. In one of his columns for Daily Racing Form, longtime handicapper and author Andrew Beyer noted that the total wagering pool for Tampa Bay Downs on Dec. 29, 2010, reached $4,230,056 and was nearly 5 percent higher than that of Santa Anita Park on the same day. Beyer also pointed out that Tampa Bay Downs frequently beats out such high-level tracks as Oaklawn Park and Fair Grounds. What makes Tampa Bay Downs such an attractive choice for many winter raceplayers? John J. Barile – also known as “Johnny B.” – operates a handicapping website (www.thetampabaydownshandicapper.com) dedicated exclusively to the track, and his answer to this question is simple and straightforward. “More than anything, it's the prices,” Barile says. “The prices at Tampa are so incredibly generous and many times the longshots that finish first, second, or third, are playable. They might not jump off the page at you, but you can figure them. “It also doesn't hurt that the takeout rates are relatively low,” he adds. “One of the main reasons the track is ranked number two in the HANA ratings is that the takeout rates are modest compared to other tracks.” In an accompanying sidebar, Barile offers his five major angles to consider when playing the races at Tampa Bay Downs. Here are a few others: u Check Brisnet.com's Handicapper's Edge newsletters for updates on track trends from its Tampa Bay Downs at a Glance updates. trainers and jockeys, as well as the best winning post positions and the most successful running styles for both the week and the entire meet. Here are some useful statistics from the final At A Glance for Tampa Bay's 2011-12 meet: 33 percent of the track's 69 51⁄2-furlong main track races were won in wire-to-wire fashion, showing that horses with consistent early speed have an advantage in these types of races. Also, horses who broke from outside posts fared best at distances of 5 ½ and 7 furlongs, but horses who broke on the rail had the most success in the track's 122 races at 1 mile and 40 yards on the main track. u Tampa Bay Downs is one of the few tracks in North America using the technology of Trakus, which lists the individual fractional times of every horse in a race and “tracks” the actual distance every horse travels. Here's an example of how a handicapper can best use Trakus: If a horse is defeated by a nose in a 1-mile (5,280-foot) two-turn route race, but he got a wide trip and actually traveled 5,400 feet while

Trakus data can be found at Tampa Bay Downs' website (www.tampabaydowns.com), which also includes lots of information useful to both beginning and advanced handicappers. For beginners, there is a link on how to read an Equibase program. In addition, there's a link to the track's stewards rulings, so if you bet a winner who's disqualified, you can go there to find out the reason why. Also, Tampa Bay's website features a link to the “How to Handicap” videos produced by Jeremy Plonk, Joe Kristufek, and the handicappers at Horseplayernow.com; a link where handicappers can purchase an Equibase past-performance program for $2.50; a free tip sheet produced by Equibase; and a simulcast calendar for players looking for action on out-of-town tracks. u If you can make it to the track, Tampa Bay Downs' will be hosting several handicapping seminars during the season. u If past seasons are any indication, Tampa Bay Downs' stable area will be filled with trainers who win races at a high-percentage rate. For example, Jamie Ness has dominated the track's trainer standings with his “blue collar” barn made up primarily of claiming horses. One of the leading percentage trainers in the country, Ness has either tied for or won outright Tampa Bay's trainer titles the last six seasons. He won with a remarkable 47 percent of his 168 starters last season, and his runners have won at a 40-percent clip since the start of the 2009-10 meet. Another high-percentage trainer, Dale Bennett, is expected to return with a large stable. During the 2009-10 and 2010-11 meets, Bennett won with nearly 25 percent of his 216 starters, and his runners made the trifecta 51 percent of the time. TAMPA BAY DOWNS Tips from Johnny B. John J. Barile is the owner of The Tampa Bay Downs Handicapper, a website which helps the track's raceplayers figure out the Tampa Bay puzzle. Barile established this information service in 2007, when he retired to Florida after a 25-year career as a New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority police officer and supervisor. Here are Johnny B's tips for a successful meet: ■ Isolate the contenders: The majority of winners will be pressing the pace (within a length or two) of the leader at the second call. This characteristic of both the main track and turf course has been true since the turf course was opened in 1998 (and even longer on the main track). Frontrunners win about half as many races as the pace pressers and closers usually finish somewhere up the track. ■ Class shows: In entry level allowance races (i.e., non-winners of a race other than maiden, claiming, or starter), most of the winners will be horses with two or three career wins and several starts against the same level of competition. In the features and stakes races, if you had bet the second and third betting choices in straight exactas for the last six seasons, you’d be up a healthy 34 percent – without even needing to handicap. ■ Go long: With average win prices of $13.70, exactas of $89, daily doubles of $108.50, and trifectas of $662, there are a lot of compelling reasons to look for value. In fact, last season there was (on average) a 21-1 shot that finished in the money (first, second, or third) in every other race. Class-change and stretch-out (sprint-to-route) types accounted for 74 percent of these bombs. ■ Jockeys: During the 2011-12 meet, only Angel Serpa, Daniel Coa and Augusto Marin had an honest positive return on investment (ROI), while veterans Pedro Cotto Jr., Wilmer Galviz and Willie Martinez have provided the best overall ROI over the last three seasons. In races from the main track chute (6 ½ and 7 furlongs), Ronnie Allen Jr. is in a class by himself. ■ Silver linings: When it rains, prefer runners who are likely to be positioned near the track's crown in the turns. The 6-percent grade there carries most of the water to the inside, leaving much better footing on the high ground. Conversely, on a drying-out track, the outside will dry first, returning it to its ordinary deep and heavy state, while the inside will be firm for a while longer. Insiders refer to these as the “golden rail” days. THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2012 41

he Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association each year supplements the stakes schedules at each of the Florida race tracks in an effort to further promote the Florida thoroughbred. This winter the FTBOA again teams up with Gulfstream Park in Hallandale and Tampa Bay Downs in Oldsmar to present a lucrative schedule of stakes races both for open company and those exclusively for Florida-breds. Gulfstream Park annually puts the spotlight on Florida-breds during their Sunshine Millions Day while Tampa Bay highlights their Florida equine natives on Florida Cup Day. Sunshine Millions Day will be conducted this year on Jan. 19 and will feature six races worth $1.3 million including the $400,000 Sunshine Millions Classic. The Classic was won last year by Mucho Macho Man, who would go on to have a banner year in 2012 culminating with his runner-up performance to Fort Larned in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Santa Anita Nov. 3. But last year’s Sunshine Million Turf winner Little Mike, would one-up his fellow Floridian as he capped off his 2012 campaign by winning the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1).
Rewarding Excellence The Stakes Program at Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs Keeps Improving Other prominent winners during the Sunshine Millions were Awesome Feather, who kept her career record unblemished to that point by romping home in the Distaff and It’s Me Mom upsetting Florida-bred Horse of the Year and North American champion Musical Romance in the Filly and Mare Sprint. 2013 Florida Sunshine Millions with $1.3 million in purses include:
The event is funded by Gulfstream Park ($600,000), The Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association ($350,000) and the FTBOA ($350,000).

Purple Egg, Cor Cor set
Stakes Records TAMPA BAY DOWNS—Oldsmar Fla. 2-year-old gelding with the potential and pedigree to develop into a two-turn powerhouse and a juvenile filly with the speed to run away from the competition set stakes records Dec. 1 as Tampa Bay Downs opened its 87th season of thoroughbred racing. A crowd of 5,226, a 7.3 percent increase from the 2011 opener, enjoyed the action on a warm, sunny afternoon. The 10-race Lambholm South Cotillion Festival Day card was devoted entirely to 2-year-olds. Purple Egg, trained by Jane Cibelli, won the 28th running of the $75,000, six-furlong Inaugural Stakes in 1:09.93, shattering the former stakes mark of 1:10.89 set by Dream of Angels in 2007. Three races later, Cor Cor staved off belated challenges from Vitameta and R Free Roll to win the 34th edition of the $75,000 Sandpiper Stakes by a half-length in 1:10.02, .31 seconds faster than Misty Rosette’s 2006 mark, for owners Steve Ballou, Harriet Waldron, Bob Ross and Ron Ballou and trainer Joan Scott. Purple Egg, who was ridden by Roberto Alvarado, Jr., is 3-for-3 following his first stakes victory. The son of Lion Heart-Luminous Prize, by Prized, rallied through the stretch to defeat pace setter and 1-2 favorite Brave Dave by a length.

Purple Egg won the 28th running of the Inaugural Stakes in record time of 1:09.93.
Purple Egg, who paid $6.40 as the second wagering choice in the six-horse field, is owned by Goodwood Racing II, LLC. Cibelli said Purple Egg will be pointed to the Grade 3, $250,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 2, likely with another race in between. The Davis is at a mile-and-a-sixteenth. “This is really going to be a two-turn horse, I believe,” Cibelli said. “Today was a very impressive performance – 1:09 on this racetrack – and I think he is the real deal.” Purple Egg won drawing away even though Brave Dave, the winner of the Grade 3 Sapling at Monmouth in September, was allowed to set uncontested fractions of :23.07 seconds for the quarter-mile and :45.77 for the half. “I was very nervous because I know how fast Brave Dave is,” said Cibelli. “Plus, (Purple Egg) was stuck wide on the turn, so it was a very impressive performance.” Alvarado was equally impressed. “He broke nicely and relaxed right away, but he wanted to go after them getting to the turn,” Alvarado said. “He was pretty much on his own through the turn, but when I asked him for run entering the stretch he really reacted. “He has a push-button gear that was really impressive. I would love to ride him back, anywhere, any time,” Alvarado said. Purple Egg, who won his first two races at Monmouth and Parx Racing, was scratched from his first two scheduled races at Monmouth after unseating his jockey both times in the post parade. At that point, the decision was made to geld him. “He scratched himself those two times, and we ended up gelding him because of that,” Cibelli said. “We knew he was very talented and didn’t want to geld him, but he wasn’t going to make it the way he was going.” The victory increased

Cor Cor won the Sandpiper Stakes by a half-length in record time of 1:10.02
Purple Egg’s lifetime earnings to $110,400. He was a $22,000 purchase at Keeneland as a yearling. Cor Cor, the Sandpiper winner, also was a bargain at $42,000 in Ocala as a 2-year-old in June. The daughter of Smoke Glacken-Babe’s Flair, by Capote, was picked out by Ballou’s 13-year-old daughter, Danielle, and named after his 16-yearold daughter Corri. Bloodstock agent Marette Farrell approved of Danielle’s choice and Cor Cor was sent to Scott, who saddled her for her first win in her first outing at Keeneland on Oct. 11. After quick fractions of :21.95 for the quarter-mile and :44.40 for the half under winning jockey Scott Spieth, Scott was concerned about Cor Cor’s staying power. “I was a little worried she might be caught, but she hung on and I’m delighted,” Scott said. “She’s a rocket. You know she is going to do her thing out of the gate, so there is nothing you can do about it. She kept digging in through the stretch.” Spieth came away visibly impressed after Cor Cor’s triumph. As the favorite, she paid $5. “She could be any kind of good,” Spieth said. “She is so fast getting out of the gate and wants to run, not crazy fast but kind of controlled fast. “I had to take ahold of her in the turn when she was wanting to change leads, but she settled again and I knew she would have another run when I asked. When they came to her late, I didn’t have to do much – she wasn’t going to let them by. ■

■ Jack Price Juvenile Stakes
S
ent off at 1-5 in the $125,000 Jack Price Juvenile Stakes at Calder Casino and Race Course on Nov. 10, Brave Dave kicked off Florida Million Day with a resounding victory to start the celebration of eight races for Florida-breds with total purses of $1 million. Owned by David Melin and Laurie Plesa, Brave Dave broke second behind Sr. Quisqueyano and needed only a few steps to shoot to the lead and never look back. By the time they hit the top of the stretch, the Florida-bred son of Bridlewood Farm stallion Put It Back and the Songandaprayer mare Sing That Song had two and one-half lengths on the field. Sr. Quesqueyano, who had been chasing Brave Dave throughout the seven furlong Jack Price, made another move but could only get within a length of the winner. Bred in Florida by Melin, Bea Oxenberg and trainer Eddie Plesa Jr., Brave Dave has now won four of his career five starts and pushed his earnings to $226,000. “I was very satisfied with his effort. He did everything the way we thought he would,” Plesa said after the race. “I was a little concerned about the [inside] post position, but he overcame that because he’s so quick out of the gate. But he was in control the whole race I thought.” Plesa said he plans to take Brave Dave to Gulfstream but believes seven furlongs may be his best race. “You never know what will happen when he matures. We might try him long, but I think this will be about as far as he will go.” The final order of finish in the Jack Price was Brave Dave, a length ahead of Sr. Quesqueyano in second with Uptown Anthem making a late run to get up third. The final time was 1:25.59.
Breaking fifth in the field of six in the $125,000 Joe O’Farrell, Crumb settled nicely for the first hundred yards, then began to move toward the leaders down the backstretch. Racing three-wide around the far turn, Crumb and jockey Paco Lopez were within striking distance, laying third at the top of the stretch behind early leader and odds-on choice R Free Roll. Lavalette Gold then moved up to challenge the favorite and those two matched strides until the eighth pole

when Lavalette Gold edged to the lead. Just then Crumb was making her move and passed the two leaders. At the wire Crumb was a length in front of Lavalette Gold with Dreamlicious in third. Final time for the seven furlongs on a fast track was 1:25.43. Crumb was bred in Florida by Eric J. Wirth and she is by the Winding Oaks Farm stallion Graeme Hall. Her dam is Legendary Hit, by Gold Legend.
■ Arthur Appleton Juvenile Turf In the $100,000 Arthur Appleton Juvenile Turf going 1 ⁄16 miles, Kanturk Kid was not expected to be a factor as he was let go by the wagering public with odds at more than 9-1. Early in the Appleton, expectations had not changed as the Kathleen O’Connell trainee was ninth of ten after the first quarter mile in a quick :22.87 set by early leader Southern Tier and eighth after four 1

furlongs in :47.92 with Dad’z Laugh leading the way. But jockey Jose Lezcano began to move the 2-year-old gelding through traffic around the far turn and get within striking distance as Dad’z Laugh began to tire and Hardrock Eleven had taken over. Down the stretch, Kanturk Kid never gave in and was a neck in front of Hardrock Eleven in second with Thunder Calls in third. Final time for the race was 1:43.34. By Act of Duty and out of the Cozzene mare Cozzene Along, Kanturk Kid is home-bred product of Gilbert G. Campbell. It was only the second win in five starts for Kanturk Kid who now has a career bankroll of $90,850.
■ Carl G. Rose Classic Handicap
Crumb winning the Joe O’Farrell Juvenile Fillies for Florida-bred 2-year-olds
They say some things get better with age but Larry Fugate’s Cash Rules seemed to get better and better with every race. Bred in Florida by Fugate with Marshall and Suzanne Novak, Cash Rules won his fourth consecutive stakes race by taking the $150,000 Carl G. Rose Classic Handicap at 11⁄8 miles on the main track. Carrying jockey Luis Saez and the top weight of 122 pounds in the Rose, Cash Rules went to the front shortly after the start, breaking from post position five.

From there it was only a question of whether he would be caught as he kept to his task throughout and won by a length and one-half as the 3-10 odds-on choice. He’s Spectacular got up for second and was nine lengths ahead of Decaf Again in third. “I can’t explain it,” trainer David Fawkes said after the race. “He just keeps on winning. And he seems to improve every time.” Cash Rules started his streak in August by taking the $53,000 Band Is Passing Stakes before winning the $75,000 Darn That Alarm Stakes on Sept. 1. In his last race, Cash Rules won the Grade 3 Spend A Buck Handicap, all at Calder. “You know what we have to do now?” Fugate said. “Now the big boys come to town [when Gulfstream Park opens] and we’re going to have to take them on.” Cash Rules has now won more than half of his career races having taken eight of 15 starts. The $90,000 winner’s check Fugate will cash for winning the Rose brings his career bankroll to $364,641. Cash Rules is the son of Peace Rules and the Silver Buck mare Cindys Sonnet.
■ Elmer Heubeck Distaff Handicap Not many had faith in My Pal Chrisy in the $150,000 Elmer Heubeck Distaff Handicap as reflected by her 6-1 odds. However, trainer Padarath
FloridaMillion_Florida Horse_template 12/20/12 10:46 AM Page 55
“Tony” Lutchman had little concern. The winner of the 2011 version of the Heubeck, My Pal Chrisy Lutchman said, “I had no doubt, no doubt she would run a big race today. She ran such a nice race last time out and had been training even better since.”
Breaking last in the field of eight, My Pal Chrisy was content to race in the middle of the pack in the 11⁄16 mile Heubeck while Cool Vixen set fractions of :23:45 for the first two furlongs and :47.50 for the half-mile. Late in the backstretch however, My Pal Chrisy began to advance and was passing horses while four-wide around the far turn. At the top of the stretch, she took the lead and kicked clear as she hit the finish line seven and one-quarter lengths in front of Flying Trip in second and Successful Song in third. The final time for the race 1:47.58 over the fast track. Bred in Florida by Shade Tree Thoroughbreds Inc., My Pal Chrisy is by Alex’s Pal and the Strike the Anvil mare Strike South. She races for the trainer’s partnership known as Tony’s Investments LLC.

■ John Franks Juvenile Fillies Turf Sunshine Thoroughbred Corp.’s Nicki Starshine came from off the pace to win the $100,000 John Franks Juvenile Fillies Turf over 11⁄16 miles but it took some racing luck and her ability to take advantage of the opportunity for her to win. Breaking mid-pack, jockey Jose Lezcano quickly pulled Nicki Starshine toward the back of the pack as they passed the grandstand for the first time and I Ain’t Gonna Lie set the pace in honest fashion going :23.47 for the first quarter and :48.66 for the half. Around the far turn, I Ain’t Gonna Lie remained tough as Verso a Verso and Nicki Starshine looked boxed in along the rail. But just before they made the turn for home, I Ain’t Gonna Lie drifted out just slightly makTHE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2012 55

ing room for Verso a Verso between horses and Nicki Starshine on the rail. As the 8-5 favorite and winner of the My Dear Girl Division of the Florida Stalllion Stakes in her last start, Verso a Verso looked primed to make her move but it was Nicki Sharshine who shot to the front. I Ain’t Gonna Lie held tough against Verso a Verso while Nicki Starshine was clear and on her way to a three and one-quarter-length victory. Verso a Verso won the battle for second, beating a stubborn I Ain’t Gonna Lie by a neck for the place. The final time was 1:43.52 over a track rated as firm. Nicki Starshine was bred in Florida by her owners and is by Milwaukee Brew out of the Eskimo mare Etaria.
■ Jack Dudley Sprint Handicap
Close it out (above) bested the field in the Jack Dudley Sprint Handicap while Bad Debt (below) took the Bonnie Heath Turf Cup Handicap
The $125,000 Jack Dudley Sprint Handicap saw Florida-bred sprinters at six furlongs in one of the more exciting finishes of the day. Dual Exhauzt broke on top but by the time they ran the first quarter in a blazing :21.50, Abel’s Ghost had taken the lead. Around the far turn, Off the Jak took over as Abel’s Ghost was beginning to tire and was forced to check behind quicker traffic. Racing between rivals, Off the Jak had a slight lead turning for home but was quickly swallowed up by Bahamian Squall who was beginning to draw off. Down the stretch, it appeared the race would go to Bahamian Squall until Close It Out was put-

ting the finishing touches on his rally by catching Bahamian Squall at the wire and getting to the finish a neck in front. Bahamian Squall was not threatened for the second spot as he was more than two lengths ahead of Bull Dozer in third. “This horse has always been very consistent,” trainer Steve Towne said. At 15-1 in the morning line and 8-1 at post time, Close It Out was not expected to be among the leaders at the wire. But Towne had a plan and confidence in his horse. “This race was very tough, but I knew there would be a lot of speed. I also knew we had the horse to catch them.” But just as horse racing can do, even Towne was not sure Close It Out could get there. When asked when he felt like he had the race

won, he replied, “About the last twenty yards. This horse always runs a good race and sometimes he gets there and sometimes he doesn’t. But he gives his all every time.” Close It Out was bred in Florida by his owner Samuel H. Rogers in partnership with his wife. Close It Out is by Closing Argument and out of the End Sweep mare Honeymoon Sweep. Final time for the six furlongs was 1:10.73. Close It Out now has six wins from 24 starts and earnings of $310,381.
■ Bonnie Heath Turf Cup Handicap The $125,000 Bonnie Heath Turf Cup Handicap concluded the 2012 Florida Million as 3-year-olds and older went 11⁄8 miles on the grass. As the only mare in the field of eight, Speak Easy Gal would not be intimidated and she went right to the front and led for most of the way while racing off the rail and going the first quarter mile in :24.45 and the half-mile in a modest :49.78. Around the far turn, Picou began to range alongside Speak Easy Gal, but the mare was stubbornly hanging on. Then Picou drifted out, pushing Speak Easy Gal into Bad Debt,
who was making a winning move on the outside. At the wire, Bad Debt was in front, a neck faster than Speak Easy Gal in second with Alley Oop Oop in third. Picou was fourth. Final time for the 11⁄8 miles was 1:49.95. It was the second consecutive year Bad Debt won the Bonnie Heath. Bad Debt races for Robert Leibner and is trained by Michael Trombetta who did not make the trip from his base at Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland. Bad Debt was bred in Florida by Pennston Farm Inc. and is by Grand Reward and out of the Pleasant Tap mare Pleasant Ring. “This is a great event and a lot of fun,” Leibner said. “And we plan on coming back. I have a great horse and a great trainer and Kendrick Carmouche rides this horse with a lot of confidence. This kid has really figured out this horse and we’d send him anywhere in the world to ride this horse.” ■
Nicki Starshine (above) won the John Franks Juvenile Fillies Turf and My Pal Chrisy (left) triumphed in the Elmer Heubeck Distaff Handicap
Florida Million Notes Between races recent Breeders’ Cup winners Trinniberg and Little Mike were honored as well as Musical Romance. Trinniberg, who is based at Calder, won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) on Nov. 3 at Santa Anita. Musical Romance, the 2011 North American female sprinter and Florida-bred Horse of the Year, was just retired before being sold at Fasig Tipton November for $1.6 million on Nov. 5. FLORIDA SIRE STAKES
FTBOA Unveils $2.2 Million Comprehensive Florida Sire Stakes Program By TAMMY A. GANTT
T
he FTBOA has developed a multifaceted Florida Sire Stakes Program designed to showcase the quality of the home-breds in the state and promote Florida sires. The Florida Sires Stakes Program features a two-year old and three-year old racing program, and uses the former Florida Stallion Stakes program as one of its components. The program is designed for FTBOA registered Florida-breds by FTBOA registered Florida sires. The program consists of over $2.2 million in purse awards supplemented by FTBOA for twoyear old and three-year old races. In addition, the lucrative program includes the 2014 Florida Sire Stakes – a six race series for two-year olds (which replaces the Florida Stallion Stakes in 2014). In 2013, the program includes $640,000 in purses at Gulfstream Park and $150,000 at Tampa Bay Downs. In 2012, it represented the 58 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2012
$1 million Florida Stallion Stakes and $430,000 in purses at Calder Race Course. The Florida Stallion Stakes transition from Calder Race Course to the Florida Sire Stakes Program administered by FTBOA has been transitioning over the course of the last couple years. The transition began with FTBOA collecting stallion registrations in 2011 and 2012. Calder Race Course has been and will be collecting eligibility fees for the foals of 2011 and has a similar fee schedule as previous years. The last Florida Stallion Stakes administered by Calder will be run in 2013 for the foals of 2011. The transition will be complete when the foals of 2012 compete in the 2014 Florida Sire Stakes program administered by FTBOA. Administration for foals of 2012 onward is implemented by FTBOA and includes Florida-bred foal registration, Florida stallion registration and eligibility payments for the program. Registration of both the foal and stallion with FTBOA is required for eligibility along with payments to be eligible in the Florida Sire Stakes series and the two-year old and three-year old supplemental stakes.

“The Florida Stallion Stakes is a flagship stakes program and it became apparent that the FTBOA could administer it, expand and grow the program using our resources, membership communications and breeders and owners perspectives to keep it as prestigious and robust as it has been in its 30 year history. The folks at Calder have been good stewards of this series over the years and we thank them and the
FHBPA for their efforts to date. We look forward to continuing to work with them as we now take ownership of the Series and move it on and upward to the next level under the rebranding of the Sire Stakes.“ said FTBOA’s CEO and Executive Vice President Lonny T. Powell. In addition to the name change from Stallion Stakes to Sire Stakes, the administration change, and

the program’s enhancement, the Florida Sire Stakes has two other important changes: 1) FTBOA registered Florida-breds participating in the program must be by FTBOA registered stallions and 2) eligibility payments include eligibility to the two-year old and three-year old supplemental stakes. “Having Florida-breds compete who have been sired by FTBOA registered Florida stallions keeps the Florida breeding industry strong and gives breeders the opportunity to showcase the outstanding stallions in the state whose progeny compete at the highest levels.” commented FTBOA Racing & Stakes Committee Chair Fred Brei. Eligibility deadlines are strategically placed so sellers can keep horses eligible to increase sales prices or buyers can complete eligibility after a sale for a promising prospect. In addition to an eligibility deadline, the program includes a supplemental payment for a horse that missed the deadline. Designed to showcase Florida-breds by Florida stallions, this structure has been created to ensure as many horses as possible could be nominated to the program. In 2014 for foals of 2012 (two-year olds), there is only one eligibility payment of $500 required to be postmarked before or on January 15, 2014 with a supplemental payment from January 16 through February 28 of $1,000. For foals of 2013, there are two eligibility payments – one their yearling year and one their two-year old year. In 2014, the yearling payment is $250 due postmarked before or on May 15 with a supplemental payment of $500 due postmarked from May 16 through

November 15, 2014. In 2015, the two-year old payment is $250 due postmarked on or before January 15 with a supplemental payment of $500 due postmarked before or on January 16 through February 28. This fee structure provides two smaller payments of $250 versus one lump sum of $500. The goal was to make sure the payments were easy to follow and to give owners opportunity to pay eligibility fees as horses progress. Observed FTBOA President Phil Matthews, “ The Florida Sire Stakes represents one of numerous efforts undertaken by our Association over the years to showcase and reward our home-breds and their breeder and owner connections. The expansion of the program to include a wide variety of races at our Florida tracks provides an opportunity for a great many of our members in the business to participate and benefit while we continue to demonstrate it really does pay to breed, own and race Florida-breds.” ■

Floridabreds won 211 of the races. Just like other racing triples, the Florida Stallion Stakes three race sweep is a difficult feat. In its 30 year history, only 11 horses have won all three, while 36 horses won two of three.

Memory Lane Down
1960
By JO ANN GUIDRY t was in 1960 that William L. McKnight bought 320 acres of Bonnie Heath Farm to develop his own Thoroughbred operation. McKnight was the chairman of the board of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M) and it was the tartan design on the company’s Scotch Tape dispenser that would provide the new farm with its name. From that initial beginning, Tartan Farms would become one of the most significant farms in the history of the Florida Thoroughbred industry. McKnight made John Nerud president of Tartan Farm Corporation and John Hartigan was brought on board to manage the new operation. My Old Flame, a half-sister to champion My Dear Girl, was offered at the Florida Breeders Sales Association’s 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale at Hialeah. The filly by Count Flame out of Iltis, by War Relic, was consigned by Ocala Stud Farms and entered the ring with a $20,000 reserve. After it was announced that she suffered from “a partial paralysis of the respiratory system,” the filly received no bids. She was then sold privately to Tally-Ho Stable, which was owned by Mrs. Virginia S. Campbell and who was the wife of Ocala Stud Farms president Bruce Campbell. Under the care of trainer Melvin (Sunshine) Calvert,

who also trained My Dear Girl, the filly went on to score a unique double. My Old Flame won the Florida Breeders’ Stakes at Hialeah Park and the Florida Breeders’ Futurity at Sunshine Park. She would make nine career starts, post three wins and one second to earn $30,072. Sadly, My Old Flame died of a cerebral hemorrhage while training at Belmont Park that summer. Of the 56 Florida-bred juveniles sold at the 1960 Florida Breeders Sales Association’s sale, 51 were starters by the following fall. Those 51 starters won 70 races for an average of $8,121; the national earnings average for a juvenile that year was $2,493. Carry Back was the leading Florida-bred juvenile money earner of 1960. On the season he earned $286,299 and posted victories in the Garden State Stakes, Cowdin Stakes and Remsen Stakes. He also notched seconds in the Christiana Stakes, Dover Stakes and Florida Breeders’ Stakes and thirds in the Great American Stakes, Tyro Stakes and Sapling Stakes. The bay colt by Saggy out of Joppy, by Star Blen, was bred/trained by Jack Price and owned by Katherine Price. Other Florida-bred stakes winners that year included Roving Minstrel, Indian Maid, Conestoga, Heroshogala, Noble Sel, Geechee Lou, Dream On, Bronzerullah, Confuse, Prompt Hero and Sandyjean. Ocala Stud was 10th on the North American leading breeders list with earnings of $655,075; the farm recorded 56 Florida-bred winners. Leading Ocala Stud-bred stakes winners were My Dear Girl ($207,139) and Roving Minstrel ($120,380). Resident stallion Rough’n Tumble was once again the leading Florida sire with progeny earnings of $366,240. Florida-breds earned $2,260,717 and $1,169,625 of that total was stakes earnings. Jacinth, Marion County’s first broodmare owned by Carl Rose, recorded her 14th winner from 14 foals by seven different stallions. Collectively, her 14 foals won a total of 77 races. Bonnie Heath was president of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, succeeding Louis Bandel. Joining Heath as the FTBA officers were Douglas Stewart, vice president; Karl Koontz, secretary; and Ev Clay, treasurer. ■

■ Selection Criteria for Florida-bred champions Year-end divisional champions will be determined using the “FTBOA Chase to the Championship” point system, a ranking that awards points for success in stakes races. The “FTBOA Chase to the Championship” allocates points for stakes wins in graded races, open-company stakes and Florida’s signature racing days, with the number of points awarded based upon the classification of the race. International stakes race status is governed by the International Cataloguing Standards Committee. The first three finishers in all Group/Graded and listed races appearing in Part I of the International Cataloguing Standards and International Statistics Book printed by The Jockey Club receive “black-type” designation. Ten point bonus to be awarded to any 2-year-old colt or filly sweeping all three legs of the Florida Stallion Stakes in determining the Champion 2-year-old Florida-bred. The Florida-bred with the most points in each division on December 31 is deemed champion of that division. Horse of the Year, Broodmare of the Year and Breeder of the Year will be voted on by the FTBOA Board of Directors and announced at the FTBOA’s annual awards dinner. In the case of a year-end tie in points in any division, earnings will be used to decide the tiebreaker. — Points are assigned as follows: 66 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2012

FARM MANAGEMENT
Year End Considerations
H
ello to all. Another year is coming to a close, which is hard to believe. At the end of the year, or start of a new season, I routinely mention that it’s important to take time to consider the farm’s current management practices. Reflect on what has been smart, cost-effective and good for the water and environment, and then consider improving by incorporating new systems, or even eliminating old management techniques. Many topics have been discussed throughout the year, with more still to consider. Now, let’s review some previously mentioned smart practices that help maintain the farm at its best for the animals, the water, the environment and you. Pasture management is a critical management tool to help every part of the farm stay strong. If no other practice is perfected, this one step will go a long way toward preserving the grass. Remember, grass takes up nutrients found in manure and urine, allowing for the animals to have more forage and to slow down and/or eliminate potential leaching and run-off, helping to protect the water and make your farm look better and have fewer upkeep and repair costs. Liming and fertilization of pastures and paddocks might be needed. Therefore, soil testing, done yearly or at least every two to three years, is another important step to allow the soil and grass to maintain the correct pH and nutrient value. Soil testing is quite inexpensive and can save money in the long run by providing needed information to ensure that only the correct fertilizer and lime amounts will be applied. No sense in paying for those expensive materials when they are not needed. Additionally, excess nutrients can then potentially leach or run-off into our springs and aquifer. Using slow-release fertilizers will give an additional “bang for the buck” because the nutrients will be released over-time versus all at once. If erosion and run-off are problems, possibly caused by roads or topography issues, then rain gardens can be an excellent solution to stop the messy and expensive problem of having the pastures washed away, or becoming a pond after each rain. Remember, rain gardens mimic the natural absorption and pollutant removal activities of a forest, meadow or a large,
grassy pasture with shrubbery; they can absorb as much as 30 to 40% more runoff than a standard lawn. Capturing rainwater in a rain garden will hold the water for a short time, allowing it to be slowly released into the soil, reducing the rush coming from a large storm – quickly, neatly and naturally. Manure management: my favorite subject. Dragging paddocks, rotational grazing to enable more complete grazing and rest, picking sacrifice areas clean of manure and properly disposing of and handling manure/stall waste from the stalls are all critical management practices. Don’t forget the sacrifice paddock can help preserve other paddocks and be one of the greenest areas of your farm. Lastly, consider if there can be any energy and/or water savings made on the farm. Always a good way to save a few dollars, these seemingly small decreases in use help preserve the environis ment and decrease expenses much more in the long run than would be exciting, fun and rewarding, expected. Small daily steps make however, it also takes huge differences towards a thriving, considerable amounts of lush farm versus a farm that is nothtime, money and effort. ing but headaches and expense in Help yourself, your pocketrepair and upkeep. A sample of the perennial peanut hay used in the horse digestibility study of Eckert (2008) was saved and included in the in vitro analysis. Perennial peanut hay typically has finer stem texture than alfalfa hay. This is desirable from an intake perspective, especially for horses. Lieb et al., (1993) observed that the voluntary intake by horses was greater for perennial peanut hay than for alfalfa hay. However, in a horse preference study by Eckert (2008), no differences were noted for quantity consumed or the time spent eating perennial peanut or alfalfa hays. The reason(s) for the different results between the two horse studies is not known, but may be the result of differences in hay quality and/or hay texture. FEEDING TIPS FOR HORSES
Since perennial peanut hay is very palatable, care should be taken to prevent over consumption by horses. Because of its high nutritional value, there would be few instances in which perennial peanut hay should be selffed to horses. Perennial peanut hay is best used as a supplemental feed to other feeds such as grass hay. For example, a mature 1,000 pound, light activity horse (two hours or less riding per day) in good condition eating 16 to 20 pounds per day requires about one pound of protein and ten pounds of total digestible nutrients (TDN; energy) per day. This requirement can be met with 14 to 16 pounds of bermudagrass hay plus two to four pounds of perennial peanut hay per day. ■

FLORIDA HORSE PARK
Success Reflected T
here is excitement in the air…a hustle and bustle at home and in the shops, restaurants and businesses throughout Ocala and Marion County. Many have returned to our community from colder parts of the country and the holidays are now in full swing as we gather at parties and feast at tables. The memory of Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends lingers and plans have already been made to gather again to celebrate this joyous season of love and giving. Yes, this is the season of shared celebration and renewed relationships. We are reminded of the importance of community. We are thankful for our abundance. As the Foundation’s second year of operations comes to a close, we wanted to take this opportunity to reflect upon some of our shared successes throughout 2012. It was an important, ‘watershed’ year for the Florida Horse Park. We are thankful for our renewed sense of community and for the rebuilding of community relationships. Under the leadership of our respective Boards of Directors, the Horse Park and Foundations' new staff have provided many new and exciting opportunities. With over 70 events throughout the 2012 year, the thousands of hoof and foot prints have left a positive, indelible impact on the Park and upon Marion county. This year’s events have been exciting, fun-filled, and diverse, including Red, Ride & Blue, a family-friendly, outdoor concert and celebrity trail ride; the Secretariat Celebration hosted by Kate Chenery Tweedy, daughter of Secretariat owner, Penny Chenery; and most recently the 3rd Annual Fall Farm Tour, hosted by Great American Insurance. As a privately funded, not-for-profit park, we rely entirely upon the generosity of our community. In 2012, the Foundation contributed nearly $150,000, supporting both park operations and

capital investment. Year-to-date fundraising events generated almost $50,000; individual and corporate donations totaled a little over $100,000. Thank you for your continued support of the Florida Horse Park! Only one remaining fundraiser is planned for 2012, the Holiday Horse Park on Parade. Please join us for a fun-filled day at the park on December 15th. Decorate your horse and yourself and ride in our parade. Horses, ponies, mules, carriages, are all welcome. There will be food and shopping vendors. Have your photo taken with a pony and Santa and go for a hay ride. This is a great way to celebrate the season and spend time with your family and friends! Cost is $10 per carload. Photos with Santa are $5. Plans are underway for more fun filled events for 2013. We ask for your continued support, as we strive to fund a covered arena and to meet our goal of building a better Florida Horse Park; one that will grow to meet the needs of our community by helping Ocala and Marion County's many businesses and families to flourish economically and to prosper. Please join us for an upcoming event or just stop by to visit. Our website at http://flhorsepark.com provides information about upcoming events and how you can help support the park. As 2012 comes to a close we would like to wish you a Joyous Holiday Season and a Prosperous New Year. Eclipse Awards Electorate Face Intellectual Dilemmas
T
here is, for the first time in years, uncertainty in the year-end Horse of the Year vote, which is a reliable mirror of the character and flavor of every racing season. An unmistakable sense of susby Paul Moran pense will pervade Gulfstream Park next month when the annual Eclipse Award gala is convened there. Those in the electorate were presented a number of choices, none unreasonable, a change to recent trends in the year-end distribution of hardware to the connections of the season’s most decorated thoroughbreds. Recent years have seen the decision clear-cut and dominated by females. Havre de Grace and Zenyatta were overwhelming choices, the latter a rare transcendent superstar. The race between Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta in 2009 was contested and hotly debated, but it was a long way to third, if there was a third in that race. The season just passed, however, left the door ajar to a far more interesting disparity of equine talent and human opinion. Four Horse of the Year contenders In most years, it would without a clear favorite and a three- be difficult to build a case against Royal Delta, who at year-old longshot lend an interesting age four won the Delaware element to the waning days of 2012 Handicap and Beldame Invitational before a jawdropping effort in successful defense of her Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic title. That was one of those races that was stored immediately in the part of the human brain where things unforgettable are kept. It did not guarantee, however, that Royal Delta will be 2012 Horse of the Year. Since American racing’s most important titles are won on dirt, it is usually difficult for a turf-course specialist to overcome the constraints of limited versatility, but when the curtain was drawn on the 29th Breeders’ Cup it was clear that two of the best American runners seen in 2012 built impressive curricula on the lawn. Little Mike may not have been a household name before the Breeders’ Cup Turf, but adding that title to those earned in the Arlington Million and Woodford Reserve Turf Classic, which is often lost in the shadow of the main event on Kentucky Derby Day, certainly puts the five-year-old gelding in the frame. Still, while in 74 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2012
most years this would be no contest, there is no guarantee that Little Mike will be voted champion male turf horse of 2012. There is Wise Dan to consider. Milers, though theirs is a specialty that demands an alchemy of speed and stamina, are the orphans of American racing. There is no Eclipse Award dedicated to milers who perform on either surface yet Wise Dan, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Mile on the Santa Anita turf and a pure miler, is a strong candidate for Horse of the Year. That victory followed on the heels of the Fourstardave Stakes at Saratoga, Woodbine Mile in Canada and Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland. The streak put Wise Dan atop the National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s final weekly poll by a wide margin. It does not, however, assure the gelded five-year-old will be named Horse of the Year, though the award would be neither surprising nor undeserved. Fort Larned may have a more difficult time winning the Horse of the Year vote than he did winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic at the end of a campaign during which he took the Skip Away at Gulfstream, Cornhusker Handicap at Prairie Meadows and Whitney Handicap at Saratoga. True, it was not exactly the best of years in what was once called the handicap division, but Fort Larned’s season was long-lived and by any measure extremely successful. As if four legitimate Horse of the Year candidates failed to offer sufficient variety of type and specialty, there will also be support, albeit unlikely sufficient, for Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another. Though forced by minor injury to miss the Belmont Stakes when declared on the eve of the race. Based purely upon the exposure he brought to the sport, he, in the eyes of some voters, earned a distinction of such great prestige by winning two legs of the Triple Crown. Four Horse of the Year contenders without a clear favorite and a three-year-old longshot lend an interesting element to the waning days of 2012, one missing from the fait accompli of recent years – a point of debate that demands more than emotion and poses an intellectual challenge to the electorate. Enjoy. ■
