Thoroughbred Syndicates In Florida

With two major racetracks making Florida home, Gulfstream Park in South Florida and Tampa Bay Downs on the West Coast and training centers centralized in Ocala, Marion County, opportunities abound for new racehorse owners in Florida to watch their horses train and race.

Racing syndicates in Florida enhance the social experience as you follow your horse’s career in racing.

The experience also gives you a glimpse into your horse’s life after racing, with choices including joining the breeding ranks or entering another elite horse sport.

This guide showcases a variety of racehorse ownership models featuring Florida-bred racehorses, horses campaigned in Florida, horses purchased via the Ocala Breeders’ Sale and/or syndicates with a home-base in Florida.

We encourage investors to research each carefully to ensure you find the best match for your goals.

ABOUT ABO UT

BREEDING

Shooting Star Thoroughbreds is a vertically integrated thoroughbred entity that specializes in early racehorse development. We offer bloodstock solutions, breeding, weanling management, yearling advancement, training, racing memberships and other thoroughbred services. With over 40 years of proven success and expert racehorse development we have grown into a full-service thoroughbred business. Graduates of our program have advanced to become some of the most competitive racehorses that have performed at the highest level of racing across the industry’s most celebrated racetracks!

RACING

Equipped with decades of breeding expertise, Shooting Star reignited their desire to form a broodmare division in support of their Champion colt Chance It! The burgeoning broodmare division began in 2022 and is located at Oak Glen Farm in north central Florida. Chance It’s offspring have already been lauded by industry professionals and we are very excited about their racing futures commencing in 2025.

Our Racing Membership offering began in 2019. The Membership affords the access and opportunity of ownership at a reasonable price point and engages individuals with a curious racehorse interest to make their ownership dream become reality. Experiencing the thrill and excitement of ownership and the ability to share those moments within a like-minded racing community is the cornerstone of this vision.

Mary is a Stakes Winning & Multiple Stakes Placed licensed trainer from an esteemed, longstanding thoroughbred family. Developing and advancing thoroughbreds to their full potential is a vocation that Mary finds both gratifying and rewarding. She has also served as Director of the FTBOA.

Lisa executes the operational business strategy and racing membership sales to help maximize the stable’s efficiencies and productivity. As a thoroughbred owner and passionate racing enthusiast, Lisa is inspired by the competitive landscape that the horse racing business offers.

“The sport needs more fans.”

A very straightforward observation in response to the recent waning popularity of horse racing in America. This observation fueled Mary and Lisa to create Shooting Star Thoroughbreds racing memberships in 2019 to attract new and existing horse racing enthusiasts to the opportunity of actually owning their own thoroughbreds, at a fraction of the cost.

Michael is a highly respected bloodstock agent renowned for his expertise in handpicking thoroughbreds like Northern Afleet. His broad industry knowledge informs his insightful counsel critical for assembling and raising the most promising thoroughbred prospects.

Great fortune was bestowed upon Shooting Star and it’s racing Members with Graded Stakes Placed and Multiple Stakes winner Chance It! Declared the 2-year-old Florida Champion Colt winning both the FSS In Reality Stakes and the FSS Dr. Fager Stakes, Chance It raced from ages 2 to 4, won at distances from 6 furlongs to over 1 mile and amassed $583,330 in career earnings! He became a stallion in 2022.

BREEDING BREEDING

Even as a young horse on the farm Chance It was bright, intelligent and precocious. He was a great student that possessed the talent and personality it takes to make a great racehorse. His mind was as impressive as his physical presence— balanced, strong with superior ability. It was no surprise that he won his maiden race by 9 lengths! His amazing ride would continue in multiple Stakes and Graded Stakes competition over the next three years! His successful career on the track made him an ideal candidate to build on that success off the track as a stallion. And as a stallion he’s already turning industry heads with his larger than life offspring. The foals look ready to run and we’re excited to see his 2-year-olds perform in 2025!

Florida Connection

We race at Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs. We are primarily a claiming stable, we like to claim Florida-breds so we can participate in the added purse money and FTBOA incentives.

Expertise

Howie Heuberger (managing partner) has been involved in many racing partnerships over the years as an investor/partner. He has taken the good and the bad from other organizations and has created the best experience for fractional race horse owners in the industry.

Model

- We offer racing partnerships available to the average guy. You do not need to have a high net worth to participate. Owning a racehorse is a very expensive and risky proposition, but by partnering with other people, it cuts the cost and risk down considerably. It also eliminates the day to day management duties, which we handle for you. You can have just as much fun owning 5% of a horse as you can owning 100%.

- Example: $728 minimum would be a 5% share of a $12,500 claimer. After that you never pay again.

- The average partnership is between 10-20 partners

- Horses are claimed between $10,000 to $40,000 with the average being $25,000

- The trainer assumes all financial responsibility for monthly expenses

- In exchange, the trainer gets 65% of net purse winnings and the partners will split up to 35%; 15% management fee to every claim at the time of the purchase

When he founded LRF in 2002, he did so on a wing and a prayer and only his love for the sport to fall back on. Billy is thankful he has a job he loves and grateful to all the LRF partners for providing him with an opportunity to follow his dreams.

- Gary Fenton (managing partner) began his career as an entertainment attorney with the William Morris Agency before breaking his parents hearts and leaving the industry to run a horse racing business with his childhood friend. M375 Thoroughbreds, Inc.

M375 Thoroughbreds specializes in computerized pedigree selection, using an objective and proprietary computer program - along with years of hands-on horsemanship - to identify champion racehorses. This concept combines the tradition and prestige of Thoroughbred horse racing with the technology of today’s powerful computers. The objective of M375 is to breed and purchase Thoroughbreds that will become successful racehorses and will also become M375 “approved” producers.

Florida Connection

M375 Thoroughbreds, Inc. is based in Florida.

Expertise

Robert A. Murphy, Jr. is the president and managing partner of M375 Thoroughbreds. A former major league baseball pitcher, Murphy is also a third-generation horse owner who has been in the Thoroughbred racing and breeding business for several decades. M375 has compiled data from nearly 100 years of recorded documents. Utilizing The American Produce Records, The Blood-Horse Stallion Register and various other sources, M375 has researched the families of racehorses going back to 1928 to determine the exact characteristics, in race records and pedigrees, that make up successful sires, dams and broodmare sires. Along with refining the art of selecting which male racehorses will become influential sires, M375 has developed a formula to discern which mares have the greatest probability of producing stake winners. M375 uses this valuable information to breed its own stock and select yearlings at public auction.

Model

- The thrill of owning a winning Thoroughbred is great; whether you own 100% of that winner, or if you own just 10%, the euphoria is the same. By owning a racehorse in partnership, you only pay a percentage of the cost, but experience all the fun.

- While the number of partners on a horse may vary, most of our partnerships have between four and six investors. Since M375 is a smaller operation, partners enjoy a close relationship with the managing partner, who keeps investors informed and educated every step of the way.

Notable horses

Expertise

- Barry Irwin (president)  is a racing industry veteran

Model

- Team Valor is compensated in three ways: a) it marks up a horse prior to syndication; b) it receives 10% of profits upon conclusion of the investment and c) it gets a 5% sales commission when a horse is sold. Profits are defined as the difference between all monies in vs. all monies out.

- Team Valor maintains an equity interest in every one of our horses. Some are minor, some are medium, some are significant.

- Team Valor handles expenses for training, etc bi-monthly.

- Purses are paid within 7 days of receipt of funds from a racetrack. Within a week, owners of a winning horse receive a package containing a disbursement check, a video tape of the race, winners’ circle photographs and press clippings if any.

Notable horses

- Irwin bred Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom and sent him for training near Ocala  with Randy Bradshaw. Most recent horses include Euro Charline (GB) running in Europe.

- Occasionally, they have hit pay dirt with a 3-year-old at the end of the season as with $60,000 buy Martial Law before he won the $1-million Santa Anita Handicap.

Thoroughbred Owners of Florida

While a very few of us can afford a sports franchise like the New York Yankees or the Los Angeles Lakers, many can afford the sport franchise that is the racehorse.
