National Horsemen Groups React to Gulfstream Horsemen Support of Decoupling
Statement from NHBPA CEO Eric Hamelback on Florida Proposal to Decouple Live Racing from Gaming
LEXINGTON, KY (January 7, 2025) — The National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association finds it necessary to address a recent press release picked up by several media outlets regarding decoupling from live racing.
The press release from Gulfstream Park (“1/ST”) contains inaccuracies pertaining to the Gulfstream horsemen and their affiliation. The NHBPA wishes to clarify that the Gulfstream horsemen’s association is not a National HBPA affiliate. While this association had previously been an affiliate, it agreed to discontinue the use of the name “Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association.”
The NHBPA, along with its affiliates—including the Tampa Bay HBPA—and many other horsemen across Florida, cannot currently support the proposed changes to Chapter 550. At this time, these changes do not appear to offer any favorable provisions for horsemen.
For years, the NHBPA has consistently opposed decoupling from live racing, as it is detrimental to the health and welfare of the horseracing industry. We remain committed to protecting the interests of horsemen and the future of live racing and for these reasons we oppose the proposed changes to Chapter 550 of Florida statutes.
THA Statement on Recent Developments Regarding Decoupling Legislation in Florida
LEXINGTON, KY (January 9, 2025) — We have received numerous inquiries regarding the recent announcement of an agreement between the horsemen’s organization at Gulfstream Park and 1/ ST Racing to support legislation decoupling the requirement for a live racing agreement that protects horsemen and ensures the continuation of live racing while the racetrack retains its rights to conduct gaming.
To clarify, the horsemen’s organization at Gulfstream Park withdrew its membership from the Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (THA) effective January 1, 2023 and is not affiliated with our organization.
While the THA does not have jurisdiction in Florida, we strongly oppose any legislation that would allow gaming license holders to separate their obligations to host live Thoroughbred racing from their gaming operations. Such legislation threatens the long-term viability of the racing industry and undermines the livelihoods of horsemen and other stakeholders who rely on a strong and vibrant racing ecosystem.
The THA remains committed to protecting the interests of horsemen and preserving live racing as an integral part of the industry across all jurisdictions.
KTA Statement Opposing Legislative Changes Sought by Gulfstream Park
LEXINGTON, KY (January 17, 2025) — Tracks and horsemen can forge a common and successful business strategy that need not be adversarial. Such collaboration brings dividends in Washington, Frankfort, Albany or Tallahassee. Racing in the twenty-first century has shown it is a responsible custodian of alternative forms of gaming and attract billions of dollars of investment equally, to the betterment of our constituents, corporate profit and tax revenue. We in Kentucky know what it looks like.
“Decoupling” is not it.
The Kentucky Thoroughbred Association has members in Florida, however, possesses no official role in Florida racing. On behalf of these members and the greater industry, we are prepared to assist as they direct.
FTHA Statement on South Florida Racing
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL (January 24, 2025) — The board of Florida Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association met to discuss the recent statements made by Keith Brackpool on behalf of the Stronach Group, 1/ST Racing, and Gulfstream Park. All discussions with Gulfstream to date have been premised on continued racing, not shutting down Gulfstream Park with or without decoupling. When representatives of Gulfstream Park approached the FTHA last Summer, they proposed how to best save racing in South Florida as part of an overall plan. Closing Gulfstream in 2025 or at the end of 2028 was never mentioned or suggested, nor is that consistent with saving racing in South Florida. As a result, the FTHA will immediately undertake steps to do the following:
• Reassess the agreement entered with Gulfstream Park given the recent Statements.
• Conduct a comprehensive analysis of all alternatives for continued racing in South Florida.
• Closely monitor all legislative or other steps that could put long-term racing in Florida at risk.
The FTHA has already reached out to Gulfstream to have further dialogue. The organization is planning another general meeting in the near future and will announce details soon.
DECOUPLING
The Domino Effects of Decoupling: Why Florida HB 105 Threatens the Future of Horse Racing
What happens in Florida doesn’t stay in Florida
The following is an op-ed submitted to The Florida Horse by Eric Hamelback, CEO, National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association. The National HBPA operates on behalf of Thoroughbred racehorse owners, trainers and backstretch personnel throughout the United States and Canada but is not affiliated with the Florida Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association at Gulfstream Park.
Horse racing is woven into the cultural and economic fabric of Florida as well as the United States. For generations, our sport has brought communities together, created jobs, served as the foundation for vibrant local economies and sparked an economicdriving industry. However, the proposed changes in Florida House Bill 105, supported by The Stronach Group (TSG), threaten to unravel this legacy by decoupling live thoroughbred horse racing from gaming operations. This legislation is not just a Florida issue; it represents a dangerous precedent that could jeopardize the future of horse racing across the nation.
Historically, the horse-racing industry has been a key partner in establishing casinos in many states. Without this partnership, it is unlikely that gaming would have gained the foothold it enjoys today. When casinos first sought to expand into new markets, they aligned with the horse-racing industry, leveraging our sport’s rich history and community support to build the trust needed for their establishment. In return, the horse-racing industry benefited from the revenues by receiving tariffs (not subsidies) generated by gaming, thus creating a mutually beneficial relationship that has sustained jobs, communities and state economies for decades.
Now, Florida HB 105 seeks to undermine that partnership by allowing thoroughbred permit-holders to cease live racing while retaining their gaming licenses. This move—known as decoupling—would sever the critical link between live horse racing and gaming, increasing our society’s separation from agriculture and jeopardizing an industry that has contributed significantly to Florida’s identity and economy.
TSG would not be in this situation of seeking to decouple if it were not from the benefits gained through racing. Live horse racing is more than a sport; it is an economic engine that supports thousands of jobs. Trainers, jockeys, breeders, farm workers, veterinarians and countless other professionals depend on the industry for their livelihoods. In Florida alone, thoroughbred racing generates millions of dollars in revenue for the state. The ripple effects would extend far beyond the racing industry, impacting local economies and the economic benefits that live racing provides.
What happens in Florida won’t likely stay in Florida. If HB 105
passes, it will embolden similar efforts in other states where live racing is coupled with gaming. Decoupling could create a domino effect, undermining the fragile ecosystems that support horse racing nationwide.
Take states such as Arkansas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Indiana and many others, where live racing is deeply intertwined with gaming. If decoupling becomes the norm, states could face similar challenges, risking the closure of tracks, the loss of jobs and further separation of our sport’s cultural and agricultural significance.
Allowing gaming licenses to exist without live racing undermines the very principles upon which these partnerships were built. When states approved gaming, it was statutorily defined that the revenues would help support live racing, rural economies and agricultural industries. The act of decoupling breaks this promise, and will be detrimental to the long-term health of the horse-racing industry and the agri-businesses it supports.
Without the consistent presence of live events, our sport risks losing its already tenuous connection to fans and will only increase the degree of separation from agriculture for future generations.
Now is the time for horsemen and horsewomen across the country to stand united with the National HBPA in opposing Florida HB 105 and any similar legislation that threatens the future of live racing. We cannot afford to let decoupling dismantle an industry that has given so much to our states and communities. The horse-racing industry has proven its value time and again, not only as a source of entertainment but as a driver of economic growth.
I urge Florida legislators to consider the broader implications of this bill. Decoupling may seem like a minor administrative change, but the consequences will be anything but small. It threatens jobs, our communities and a way of life for those of us lucky enough to work in this industry.
But the Florida lawmakers need to hear from horsemen and women, industry stakeholders and fans of this great sport. We must ensure they understand what is at stake with this shortsighted legislation. The future of horse racing depends on it and together, we can protect an industry through a sport that has given so much to so many.
Tell Florida State legislators to oppose HB 105 (decoupling Gulfstream Park’s racing and gaming licenses) Scan the QR Code to sign the NHBPA Petition.
ERIC HAMELBACK CEO National HBPA
EQUINE SPEED is a
Dear Florida Breeder,
By now we are all well-informed of Gulfstream Park’s intent to decouple their casino gaming from live racing responsibilities. I have no doubt they are very serious about abandoning live racing while expanding casinos and property development.
This cynical action arrives on the heels of historic stimulus legislation - led by the FTBOA and our strong allies in Tallahassee - that stabilized racing and breeding economics. The only outstanding ingredient for an ascendant industry - racetrack operators committed to the live race.
Florida’s 335,000 horses, ranking third amongst all U.S. states, generates 112,000 jobs on 561,000 acres of greenspace rendering $12.8 billion total economic impact – all built upon a Thoroughbred foundation.
Florida Thoroughbreds are a $3.2 billion win bet:
• jockeyed by 33,500 workers
• saddling 1 out of every 4 Florida horses (90,000 head)
• powering 25% of the Florida equine economy
• to an economic win-photo between all Florida collegiate athletics (including football bowl games) or all Florida major league sports combined.
As you consider the future of the Florida Thoroughbred industry, bear in mind; we do not control the racetrack operators; we do control our Tallahassee battle-plan to beat away their selfish, nefarious intents, as we have so many times before.
FTBOA stands firm. Undaunted. Tireless in combat. We strive to preserve sound industry economics and seek reaffirmed racetrack commitments to the live racing industry which, combined, fuel a strong Florida breeding industry.
George Isaacs President, FTBOA
Florida Thoroughbreds WIN, perennially ranking first in the nation (outside Kentucky) for most key metrics, including:
• starters, starts, wins, open stakes wins and
• at the highest echelon of our global sport, graded stakes wins
Finally, a show-bet parlay: Florida annually ranks third in three major national categories: total foal crop outside Kentucky, total wagering and national purse earnings.
Clearly, equine speed is a major Florida export.

Major Florida Export
The FTBOA, itself a product of sunshine, seeks a drying track and a fair finish. The 2023 and 2024 legislation (HB 7063/7073) heralded exactly that new era.
Our 2024 breeding and racing incentives newly bested all other state offerings outside Kentucky and we therefore anticipated investment gains across the Florida industry.
To quote a leading industry investor, “the biggest problem now is marshalling horse trailer traffic at the I-75 off-ramp!”
Our natural archrival ought be the equinomic juggernaut centered in Kentucky. We have the ingredients – talent, incentive, economy and a champion’s heart.
Top States by Combined Breeding and Open Race Incentives
But, our chase is sloppy going, towards a moving finish line, in the form of destabilizing industry and legislative forces.
The 2025 proposed HB105 decoupling legislation reintroduces uncertainty and crushes our Kentucky Derby dreamings. January through May is peak decision-making for our industry’s longest-run investors – the breeders. Foals conceived now become racehorses in 2028 or 2029, a three to four year assembly line.
Pitting hyperbole against destabilized reality – the bigger traffic nightmare must not become u-turning horse trailers at that same I-75 intersection.
But the race is early, the horse is strong and the FTBOA has home track advantage. We are commited to the fight for long-run industry certainty and stability, including:
• the rapid and forever dismissal of all decoupling specter,
• assure investors of a commercial value for their long-run production,
• verify that racing opportunities persist in Florida and beyond, and
• maintain incentive levels competitive with other major breeding states.

Florida-bred Mrs Worldwide Wins Second Straight Stakes With Sandpiper Score
Mrs Worldwide circled the field around the far turn then wore down front-running Carroll’s Honor with a furlong to run and win her second consecutive added-money test in the $75,000 Sandpiper at Tampa Bay Downs on Dec. 7. Trained by Brian Lynch for Flying Dutchmen Breeding and Racing LLC, Florida-bred Mrs Worldwide was one of six 2-year-old fillies going six furlongs after three fillies scratched.
The Sandpiper featured a $50,000 bonus for Florida Sire Stakes eligible runners presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association but Mrs Worldwide did not qualify.
Mrs Worldwide started quickly from post two before jockey Samuel Marin allowed her to settle into fourth as 25-1 longshot Carroll’s Honor took them out of the six-furlong chute and onto the main track.
Carroll’s Honor led by a length through a quarter mile in :22.32 with Andrea second before Marin sent Mrs Worldwide at the leaders heading into the turn. Mrs Worldwide and 8-5 favorite Andrea went on the attack with five-sixteenths to run but Carroll’s Honor continued on short lead as they came out of the turn.
Mrs Worldwide drew even with Carroll’s Honor at the top of the stretch then took over past the eighth pole as Hollygrove began to
make up ground on the outside. Hollygrove got within a length inside the final sixteenth but Mrs Worldwide hung on to win by a half length in 1:10.07 on the fast track. Hollygrove was second, four-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Dancing Magic in third. Florida-bred Carroll’s Honor was fourth followed by Andrea and Another Cleeshay. La Gioconda, Paradise City and Tessitura were scratched.
“When I saw the first quarter [time], I thought Samuel had her in a great spot. She was traveling well and I started to think she had a pretty good shot,” assistant trainer Nic Lynch said. “Then she came down the lane and held on, so it was a very successful trip for us up to Tampa. She’s just a lovely filly to have in the barn.”
Mrs Worldwide paid $13.40 to win and received more accolades from Marin.
“Everything came out perfect,” Marin said. “I tried to keep her out of trouble like [Brian Lynch] told me and she did it perfect. She let me set her down and when I did, I was so confident and happy where I was at.
“When I asked her, she just took off and did the rest. She’s a lovely girl who can do whatever you want –if you want to go with her she’ll do it, and if not she can sit right behind it. She’s awesome and I’m thankful for the opportunity to ride her.”
A winner of the $65,000 Juvenile Fillies Sprint going six-anda-half furlongs at Gulfstream Park on Nov. 16, Mrs Worldwide won for the third time in six starts with two thirds. She broke her maiden by nearly three lengths over a muddy five-and-a-half furlongs at Ellis Park on July 4 but was eased in her next start in the $129,000 Debutante, also at Ellis. The chestnut filly was then third in $80,000 Presque Isle Downs Debutante over an allweather surface on Sept. 20 before winning the Juvenile Fillies on dirt by nearly two lengths.
Mrs Worldwide was purchased out of the 2024 Ocala Breeders’ Sales March Sale where Boardshorts Stables took her for $100,000 out of the Dynasty Thoroughbreds consignment.
The $45,000 first place check increased her career earnings to $124,700.
Mrs Worldwide is by Global Campaign out of Scatmeifucan, by Scat Daddy and was bred in Florida by Rebecca Ming. Scatmeifucan is the dam three winners from three starters including Floridabred stakes winner Stat. She has an unnamed yearling filly by Connect and was bred in 2024 to City of Light. n

Florida-bred Lord Eddard Stark Rules H. Allen Jerkens Handicap at 60-1
John Rowe’s Lord Eddard Stark shot to the front in the shadow of the wire to catch odds-on favorite Utah Beach and produce an astonishing victory at 60-1 odds in the $108,000 H. Allen Jerkens Handicap at Gulfstream Park on Dec. 7. It was the first career stakes win in 28 starts for the 6-year-old Florida-bred gelding, who defeated eight other 3-year-olds and older over the marathon distance of two miles on the grass.
In addition to earning the $59,520 winner’s share of the purse, Lord Eddard Stark also took home $8,000 in Florida-bred bonus money presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association.
“We’ve been talking about trying to run him a mile-and-a-half or two miles for a while now and we just didn’t have the opportunity,” trainer Joe Orseno said. “When this came up, I said, ‘We’re going to run him in this two-mile race. You might think I’m crazy, but we have to take a shot.’ Until you try it, you never know.”
The victory was first stakes win for Rowe, a resident of Reddick, Fla, who despite the long odds, said he was not surprised.
“No, absolutely I wasn’t surprised,” Rowe said. “He is a distance runner at age six and he gets better as he gets older. The longer the race, the stronger he gets and the jockey told me he could have gone another half mile.
“I bet him. All my friends bet him. My son bet him. My friends in England, they stayed up ‘till midnight to watch the race and they bet him. I have the trophy. I have the money and I think I could walk back to Ocala right now I’m so excited.”
Florida-bred Prevent went immediately to the lead from the start and was in front of second-running Six Minus by as many as 15 lengths as they finished the first mile in 1:40.76. Lord Eddard Stark raced in sixth on the rail around the clubhouse turn and down the backstretch for the second time as Prevent maintained his lengthy advantage through nine furlongs in 2:07.22 and a mile-and-a-half in 2:32.12.
Prevent was still in front with two furlongs to race as Utah Beach began to advance while three-wide and Lord Eddard Stark saved ground in sixth, still five lengths back. Utah Beach shot past Prevent at the top of the stretch when jockey Leonel Reyes shifted Lord Eddard Stark to the outside with a furlong to run. Utah Beach was clear passing the sixteenth pole but Lord Eddard Stark found his best stride, catching Utah Beach at the finish to win by head in a final time of 3:20.28 on the firm turf. Utah Beach was a length-and-three-quarters in front of Six Minus in
third followed in order by The Ginger Wizard (Ire), California Frolic, Prevent, Lord Flintshire, Eldest Son and Really Good. Dean Martini and The Grey Wizard (Ire) were scratched.
“I was pretty happy with the trip we were getting because he was just sitting on the inside covered up like I wanted him, and then he swung him around when he had to,” Orseno said. “I was happy he got a galloping trip, because in the morning that’s what the horse does all the time. He just gallops them into the ground. The riders always tell me the horse never gets tired. I couldn’t wait to run him this far.”
Assigned 117 pounds and getting a five-pound break from Utah Beach, Lord Eddard Stark paid $123 to win.
The Jerkens was only the second start in a stakes race for Lord Eddard Stark, who finished sixth in the $100,000 ESMARK Turf Classic won by Forever Souper at Tampa Bay Downs in March. He entered the Jerkens off a fifth-place finish in a $62,500 optional claiming won by Saratoga Flash going a mile-and-a-sixteenth at Gulfstream on Oct. 18 and his last victory came against first level, $25,000 optional claimers going a mile on the turf at Gulfstream in May.
Lord Eddard Stark is by He’s Had Enough out of Rough Winter, by Macho Uno and was bred in Florida by Michael John Rowe. He has now won five with four seconds and five thirds while banking $233,149.
Lord Eddard Stark was the first foal for Rough Winter, who has another winner from two starters and three foals. She has an unraced 2-year-old colt, Valiant Winter, by Bridlewood Farm stallion Valiant Minister. n

His first horse was a broodmare by Copelan named Lady Lan that he purchased for $1,500 at Fred Hooper’s dispersal sale. His first foal out of her was the filly, Copewiththiscoyote, that he sold to Winstar Farm for $150,000 in 1996.
He was hooked.

Tyler Gaffalione Notches Career Win No. 2,500
Jockey Tyler Gaffalione rode his first career winner at Gulfstream Sept. 7, 2014. So, it was only fitting the native of nearby Davie, Fla., would reach yet another milestone at his hometown track.
Gaffalione notched Win No. 2,500 in the first race, scoring aboard Kiss Cam ($15.80) before going on to win the second race aboard Florida-bred War Beat ($6) and finishing off a $40.20 Early Daily Double.
“I just feel so blessed. I’m just so thankful to be able to come out here and live out my dream every day,” Gaffalione said. “It’s always nice to come back to Gulfstream Park and see all the friendly faces and everyone I grew up with. It feels amazing. I’m just so thankful for the horsemen’s continued support.”

But more than a horse trainer, Slade Stodghill was a father. He raised his two sons as a single father and although chasing his own dreams across the country, he never missed the important things for his two boys.
They will dearly miss his witty banter and unconditional love.
He finally lost his battle with esophageal cancer on Dec. 14 at HCA Hospital in Ocala. He passed peacefully with his sons by his side.
Slade will be remembered and missed by many. He is survived by his loving sons Lance Allan Stodghill and Jonathan Cash Stodghill. n
The 30-year-old jockey, who has won many titles on the Kentucky circuit, scored his first career win aboard Holdin’ Bullets, his third career mount, five days before his 20th birthday. He went on to capture the 2015 Eclipse Award as North America’s champion apprentice. Gaffalione also celebrated career wins 1,000 (Mission from Elle, Dec. 30, 2018) and 1,500 (Florida-bred Awesome Pudding, Feb. 24, 2021) at Gulfstream.
“They’ve always been good to me here,” Gaffalione said, “and I can’t thank my agent Matt Muzikar enough.”
Gaffalione, who has ridden the winners of 22 graded stakes (six Grade 1s) in 2024, shares Gulfstream’s record for most wins on a single card with Jerry Bailey, Luis Saez, Paco Lopez and Irad Ortiz Jr. He made seven visits to the Gulfstream winner’s circle on July 4, 2017. n

Florida-bred Mystic Lake Adds Fifth 2024 Stakes Victory With Sugar Swirl Score
C2 Racing LLC and Stefania Farms LLC’s Mystic Lake tracked frontrunning Launch until the top of the stretch then drew off in the lane to win the $133,000 Sugar Swirl by three-quarters of a length on Dec. 21 at Gulfstream Park. In winning the six-furlong contest against four other fillies and mares, Mystic Lake won for the fifth time this year—all in stakes—in nine starts while taking down a $6,000 Florida-bred bonus presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association.
Mystic Lake and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. started best of all from the outside post five before Launch took over from post three in the first furlong. Launch had a length on Mystic Lake through a quarter-mile in :22.40 and held off the 3-5 favorite as she began closing in around the far turn. Mystic Lake had a head in front of Launch after a half-mile in :46.38 then began to extend her lead in the stretch under a steady drive from Ortiz. Socially Selective made a late run from fourth to get second as Launch held on for third, three-and-three-quarters lengths farther back. Intrepid Daydream and Florida-bred R Harper Rose completed the order of finish.
Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., Mystic Lake completed the distance in 1:11.20 and paid $3.20 to win.
Coming into the Sugar Swirl off a three-month layoff, Mystic Lake was last seen finishing fourth to Horse of the Year candidate Thorpedo Anna in the Grade 1 Cotillion going a mile-and-asixteenth at Parx Racing on Sept. 21.

cross-entering her to defend her title in Gulfstream Park’s Sugar Swirl on the same day and the 5-year-old Florida-bred mare certified the decision with a determined victory. Spirit Wind took the $150,000 Poinsettia against six other fillies and mares, 3-years-old and older, for her third stakes win in eight starts this year.
Ridden for the first time by Fernando Jara, Spirit Wind started evenly before settling into third, about a length behind High Class during the early stages. High Class clipped off a :22.49 first quarter mile with Astemia to her outside before Spirit Wind shifted three-wide to begin closing in.
Astemia took the lead midway around the turn but had to fight off Spirit Wind at the head of the stretch as High Class dropped back. Astemia maintained a narrow lead with a furlong to run before a determined Spirit Wind took a clear lead inside the final sixteenth then held on to win by a length ahead of Fibber in second. Royal Spa with another half-length back in third followed by Astemia, Pistol, High Class and Holly Dolly.
“She got her job done, thank God. For sure, she ran great,” Joseph said. “[Jockey Fernando Jara] took her back early. I thought she was getting out a little bit without the extended blinker. But once she straightened up, she kind of looked like she had the race. Then, towards the end, it kind of got a little closer. But she held on and that’s the important thing.”
Spirit Wind finished up in a final time of 1:04.28 for five-anda-half furlongs on the fast track and paid $4.80 to win as the 7-5 favorite.
A winner of the $100,000 Memorial Day Sprint at Lone Star Park in May and the Grade 2 Honorable Miss at Saratoga Race Course in July, Spirit Wind had just finished third to Upper Case in the $295,000 Dream Surpreme at Churchill Downs on Nov. 9. She also counts among the stakes victories the $100,000 Any Limit and $65,000 Musical Romance in 2022 and the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl last year.
A 5-year-old daughter of Double Diamond Farm stallion Bahamian Squall out of Sacred Psalm, by Awesome of Course, Spirit Wind has now won half of her 16 career starts with three seconds and two thirds. Bred in Florida by Jacks or Better Farm Inc., Spirit Wind is owned by Miller Racing LLC and now sports career earnings of $729,590.
Sacred Psalm has produced eight winners from nine starters including stakes-winner Sing Praises, by Hear No Evil; and stakes-placed Silent Prayer by Brooks ‘n Down. Sacred Psalm has an unraced 2-year-old colt, Lead Pipe Joe, by Battalion Runner; and an unnamed yearling colt by Vino Rosso. n
Global Steve Takes Parx Future Stars in Second Start
A six-and-a-half-length winner of his first career start, Floridabred Global Steve parlayed his strong debut into a stakes victory with a length-and-a-half score in the $75,000 Parx Future Stars at Parx Racing on Dec. 30. Trained by Robert Reid Jr. for Cash in King LLC and LC Racing LLC, Global Steve outperformed six other 2-year-olds going seven furlongs.
Slow from the start, Global Steve and jockey Mychel Sanchez were last, about four lengths behind early leader Fire Pit as they raced out of the backstretch chute and onto the main track. After a quarter mile in :23.04, Sanchez took Global Steve to the rail where he accelerated into second as Fire Pit continued with a length advantage down the backstretch.
Global Steve used an inside move around the turn to challenge Fire Pit and those two hit the top of the stretch on near even terms while two lengths clear of Alchemism in third. Global Steve darted clear at the top of the stretch and was three lengths in front with a furlong to run as Alchemism took second on the inside.
Global Steve finished up in 1:28.01 on the sloppy and sealed track while Crab Daddy rallied late to get second. Alchemism was another neck back in third followed by Gun Trader, Baby Dukes, Fire Pit and Florida-bred Right Win Runner.
Global Steve paid $5.80 to win as the 9-5 favorite.
The chestnut colt earned $43,800 to push his career bankroll to $73,800.
LC Racing purchased Global Steve for $60,000 out of the Two Oaks Equine consignment at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale in May.
Bred in Florida by Lance Colwell, Global Steve is by Bucchero out of A Rosefor Isabelle, by Hard Spun. Global Steve is a halfbrother to stakes-winner Cagliostro, by Upstart, the only other starter for A Rosefor Isabelle. She has an unnamed weanling filly by City of Light and was bred to Upstart in 2024. TFH

Big Martini Draws Off To Win FSS Marion County for First Stakes Score
BY BROCK SHERIDAN
Under pressure while leading early, Big Martini and jockey Sonny Leon drew clear at the top of the stretch to win the $100,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Marion County by two lengths at Tampa Bay Downs on Dec. 14. It was the first career stakes victory for the 4-year-old gelding who defeated three others in the seven-furlong test for 3-yearolds and older by registered Florida stallions.
Odds-on favorite Loco Abarrio, winner of the FTBOA Gil Campbell Memorial at Gulfstream Park last out, went right to the front from post four but was quickly joined by Big Martini on the inside and 2-1 second choice Khozeiress between horses as those three raced in tandem out of the backstretch chute.
Big Martini took a half-length advantage on Khozeiress with five-furlongs to run as Loco Abarrio raced a length back in third and Pure Class tucked in behind them.
After a quarter-mile in 22.15, three lengths separated the field as Khozeiress edged closer to Big Martini on the lead while Loco Abarrio was unable to keep pace and dropped back to the outside of Pure Class on the rail.
Khozeiress drew even with Big Martini past the quarter pole but could not maintain the challenge in the run for home when Big Martini raced to a three-length advantage with a furlong to the finish. Pure Class took second from Khozeiress in mid-stretch but could not make up ground on Big Martini, who raced under the wire in a final time of 1:22.19. Pure Class was second with Khozeiress another four-and-a-quarter lengths back in third. Loco Abarrio was fourth. Everdoit and Holiday Pay were scratched.
The final time was the second fastest in eight runnings of the Marion County, behind only the 1:21.68 stakes record set by World of Trouble in 2018.
Trained by Rohan Crichton, Big Martini paid $7.20 to win.
The victory by Big Martini avenged two second-place finishes to Loco Abarrio going back to a first level, $20,000 optional claiming at Gulfstream in June of last year and when a half-length shy of his rival in the Gil Campbell. He was also fourth in the $96,0000 Benny the Bull won by Comedy Town with Loco Abarrio second at Gulfstream in August.
In one start since the Campbell, Big Martini was fourth in an upper level, $62,500 optional claiming won by Steal Sunshine going a mile at Gulfstream on Nov. 22.
Owned by Daniel L. Walters and Dennis G. Smith, Big Martini earned $60,000 to increase his career bankroll to $268,308. He is by The Big Beast out of Dirty Martini, by Hard Spun and was bred in Florida by Bett Usher and Elaine Daughtery.
Dirty Martini has two winners from two starters and four foals including an unraced 2-year-old gelding, Lucky Twist, by Breaking Lucky; and a weanling colt, Martini On Tap, by Magic On Tap. Big Martini is the only black-type performer for Dirty Martini, who was bred to Florida-bred Pappacap in 2024.
Big Martini is a two-time graduate of Ocala Breeders’ Sales having first sold for $10,000 to Siria Enriquez at the 2021 Winter Mixed Sales where he was consigned by Perrone Sales. He was then consigned by Blue River Bloodstock to the 2022 OBS June Sale where Crichton bought him for $87,000. TFH

NAMED NHBPA CLAIMING HORSE OF THE YEAR
NESS-TRAINED “ULTIMATE WARRIOR HORSE” GOES 11 FOR 14 IN 2024
NHBPA PRESS RELEASE (EDITED)
LEXINGTON, KY—Spikezone, the Florida-bred gelding who overcame a second round of knee surgery to go 11 for 14 as a 5-year-old, has been named the National HBPA’s National Claiming Horse of the Year for 2024. The gelding’s 11 wins trailed only Tennessee Moon’s 13 for the most North American victories.
The National Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association presents the award to shine the spotlight on horses that are exceptional at their level of competition, with claiming horses comprising the largest segment of racing across America. Spikezone and his connections will be honored Feb. 25 at the National HBPA awards luncheon at the organization’s annual conference in Safety Harbor, Fla., on Tampa Bay.
“I am so shocked. It just doesn’t happen the way it has — maybe one time out of 100,” Lo said. “It’s crazy. I never had a horse that good.”
“It’s a dream, unreal,” Johnson added.
Spikezone concluded 2024 with six straight victories capped by his stakes debut in the $75,000 Let’s Give Thanks Stakes at Parx Racing on Nov. 27. He became eligible for the National Claiming Horse of the Year for 2024 by competing for a $100,000 claiming price on March 23 at Tampa Bay Downs. That was one of his trio of thirds on the season.
“Spikezone is terrific example of how horses can just get better
“We’re thrilled for him,” said Mid-Atlantic-based trainer Jamie Ness, whose Jagger Inc. stable owns Spikezone with Troy Johnson and Charles Lo. “He deserves it.”
World’s Leading Conference for Racing
BY TAMMY A GANTT
More than 50 speakers addressed topics including historical horse racing, artificial intelligence, sports marketing strategies, and industry challenges and opportunities at the 50th Global Symposium on Racing held Dec. 9 – 11 in Tucson, Ariz.
Presented by the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program under the guidance of chair and alum Robert Hartman, the event brought together more than 650 industry professionals from around the world.
To put the 50 years in perspective, when the program was founded, in 1974 it was the first of its type in the country, specific to racetrack management, both in the front office and behind-thescenes with the development of the racing animal. It included Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse flat racing, harness trotters and pacers and Greyhound dog racing.
A half-century ago, tracks were outside of most populated areas, betting was exclusively at racetracks, and the advent of simulcasting had not come. Youth were not allowed at most racetracks and there was no Sunday racing in many states. Tribal casinos, racinos and expanded gaming were a new topic in 1993. Within a decade some of the first Thoroughbred retirement programs sprang up and the gaming landscape changed, ushered in by advance deposit wagering, VIP programs like the Twin Spires Club, and a beta version of
historical horse racing debuting at the 2004 Breeders’ Cup at Lone Star Park. These were later followed by computer-assisted robotic wagering groups affiliated with rebate shops. Within the last five years, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, historical horse racing, expanded sports betting, artificial intelligence, social license to operate, and global sports marketing strategies joined the list.
What do all of these innovations have in common? They all had their moment as racing’s next great thing. It’s debatable if some did or did not help racing. But more importantly, at past symposiums, these were cutting-edge topics with new terminology and technology. The conference has also served as ‘Switzerland’ in the sense that the program is neutral on industry issues. There may be discourse in the industry, but the gathering serves as a reminder to come
Racing Hits Milestone 50th Anniversary
together, shake hands and put aside infighting.
Over the years, the topics have created conversation accelerated by robust networking opportunities with key leaders. Some conversations led to realistic expectations of how something could be implemented across racing states with their own unique structures, challenges, and ever-changing playing fields. Others became a catalyst for hashing out the pros and cons, at times being embraced by innovators willing to work to find a foothold in the marketplace. Other visionary ideas languished for years, were finally achieved with little fanfair, or shelved for good.
This is the stuff of the symposium where some of the greatest industry minds meet - the cynics, the innovators, the realists, the newbies, the dreamers, the visionary, and the media who tell the story, all wishing to be an integral part of the industry’s
legacy. The 50th was no different as past became prologue once again.
The 2024 program’s keynote speaker Louis Cella was inspiring with his four-generation family history filled with achievements, reinvention, and innovations throughout the decades at Oaklawn Park. The track’s current president, he said the modern emphasis is on collaboration for the sport’s future, something the Hot Springs track knows a bit about thanks to partnering that has led to their historical horse racing revenue.
Twin Spires Club innovator and Horse Racing Nation founder, Mark Midland, showcased his team’s visionary research projects geared to provide new insights for the industry in ‘Artificial Intelligence: Transformative Applications for Advancing Horse Racing’. Panelists also explored how AI can enhance equine welfare and improve wagering experiences.
Talks with top trainers and an innovative ideas panel are popular annually, and in 2024 both talks packed the conference hall. In ‘Champions. Challenges. Commitment,’ Eclipse awardwinning producer Amy Zimmerman discussed requirements for success in racing with trainers Bob Baffert and Todd Pletcher, both graduates of the RTIP program.
‘Fifty Ideas in 50 Minutes’ covered a myriad of practical ideas

to out-of-the box thinking with racing executives Alex Dodyan and Dora Delgado (RTIP grad), sales company exec Liza Hendriks, award-winning journalist Jay Hovdey, and racing/gaming consultant Dick Powell. Visit FTBOA.com for the list of 50 ideas.
HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus gave an update on Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority 2024 efforts and future goals, along with a progress report provided by the Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit.
A wide range of subjects, including international racing perspectives, sports marketing strategies, biosecurity for racetracks, and the future of retired racehorses were also covered. The full program agenda, speakers and video summaries of the presentations are available at https://rtip.arizona.edu/symposium/2024-symposium.
The 50th anniversary also meant an influx of RTIP alumni, which includes a long list of celebrated industry leading professionals in the media and behind-thescenes.
“I would like to thank the 100 alumni who returned to Tucson. They came back to support us this year. Some are folks that you know like Todd Pletcher and Bob Baffert and 98 names you may not know. They are 98 names that may not have their name up in lights but support this industry behind-thescenes,” Hartman said.
Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ & Owners’ Association CEO Lonny Powell, a former chair and alum of the program, has long served on the advisory board for the program and symposium, among other leaders, who work to ensure a diverse range of topics bringing perspective and future trends. Brock Sheridan, editor-in-chief of Florida Equine Communications serves on the student alumni board and was former president and Tammy A. Gantt Association AVP is also a former graduate. TFH
Race Track Industry Program’s Florida Influence
“We all do this for the passion of the horse and with a passion for racing. When I think of Florida alums — I think Lonny Powell. Lonny is such a great advocate of our program. I feel that Lonny surrounds himself with RTIP alums. He knows the value of the program, he is an alum and a beacon for the program in the State of Florida.
We have folks at Tampa Bay Downs. We have folks at Gulfstream. The RTIP program has amazing representation in Florida. We send students there for internships and it has really been a great state.”

The “FTBOA Chase to the Championship” point system, which awards points for success in blacktype/listed stakes races, will be used as a guide in naming yearend division champions for FTBOA registered Florida-breds. A horse must win at least one race during the year to be eligible as a division champion. A horse selected for an Eclipse Award and/or winning a Breeders’ Cup race automatically becomes the leader in the eligible division, superseding the point standings. Final point tallies are determined as of Dec. 31, with year-end ties broken by graded earnings. The naming of any division champion or other award recipient, e.g., Horse of the Year, Broodmare of the Year, etc., always remains at the sole discretion of the FTBOA Board of Directors.
International stakes race status is governed by the International Cataloguing Standards Committee. The first three finishers in all Group/Graded and listed races appearing in Part I of the International Cataloguing Standards and International Statistics Book printed by The Jockey Club receive “blacktype/listed” designation.
EQUINE CARE

Breeding Problem Mares
Some mares are hard to get in foal and some conceive but lose their pregnancy. Broodmare management can be challenging and there are many reproductive issues that may be encountered when breeding mares so it is important to determine the problem then find a solution.
According to Karen Wolfsdorf, DVM, DACT, Hagyard Medical Institute (field veterinarian and reproductive specialist at the
McGee Fertility Center), the first thing is to identify whether the mare is actually a problem mare.
“If she’s 18-years-old and hasn’t had a foal for two years, was bred three times to a fertile stallion and is not in foal, this is very different from a mare that’s 16-years-old, has had multiple foals and simply foaled late in the season and only got bred once,” Wolfsdord said. “Both of these are considered a ‘barren mare’ but one was only bred once late and the other was bred several times unsuccessfully.
“We need to start with the history, to see if the mare is in fact a problem and has a hard time getting in foal and if there are reasons in her past history. Perhaps she had a dystocia foaling, or some post-partum complication.
“The history can help us a lot in determining if she is a problem, why she may be a problem, and how we might diagnose and treat the problem.”
Wolfsdorf recommends starting with basics after evaluating the mare’s history, and this means a breeding soundness exam.
“This entails looking at body condition, to make sure the mare is not too thin or too fat, and that she is healthy—with no signs of metabolic or Cushing’s disease,” she said. “A general exam is important to make sure there are no underlying health issues. Then going ahead with a reproductive exam.”
This will include examination of the perineum and vulva, rectal palpation and ultrasound of the reproductive tract.
“When the mare is in heat [and the cervix is open], we want to get a culture and cytology of the uterus,” Wolfsdorf said. “There are several ways to do this. Sometimes we just use a speculum and culture swab and sometimes a swab and a cytology brush, depending on the history and reproductive examination findings of the mare.”
Most of the mares that are considered a

problem tend to have a larger, saggy uterus. They may be older mares who have had multiple foals.
“In those mares, to get the best representative sample, I prefer to do a low-volume lavage,” Wolfsdorf said. “We put a liter of fluid into the uterus, get it back out, and then do a culture and cytology on that fluid. This helps us identify one of the most common causes of infertility, which is endometritis [inflammation or infection of the uterus].”
ENDOMETRITIS
There are two types of endometritis that cause problems; persistent post-mating induced endometritis and chronic endometritis according to Wolfsdorf.
“When a mare is bred, she normally develops a post-matinginduced endometritis. This is an inflammatory response to the sperm deposited in the uterus. This normal response helps get rid of the dead sperm, bacteria and inflammatory cells by stimulating the uterus to contract.
“A normal mare will have an anti-inflammatory response, uterine contractions and her uterus will be cleared within 24 hours post breeding.
“Some mares, however, are more susceptible to endometritis if they have a saggy uterus and may not have the appropriate immune response post-breeding. These mares are unable to clear the sperm, inflammation and bacteria as readily without an appropriate anti-inflammatory response and are incapable of adequately contracting their uterus. This sets them up for a persistent post-mating-induced endometritis.”
This establishes an inflammatory environment that is not conducive for an embryo to descend into.
“With those mares, sometimes all you need to do is administer oxytocin, which helps contract the uterus, or do a uterine lavage and then give oxytocin to help flush out all the inflammation, dead sperm, bacteria, etc. If this doesn’t help, a mare may need further treatments and we need to be more aggressive,” Wolfsdord said. “These treatments can include platelet-rich plasma, acupuncture
or more intense therapies, if routine lavage and oxytocin doesn’t work.”
The second type of endometritis is chronic, which is usually associated with older mares with baggy, saggy uteruses or poor perineal conformation because they’ve had many foals.
“To keep bacteria out, a mare needs three good seals. First the vulva lips, then the hymen [vestibular vaginal fold] and third is the cervix. If any of those are impaired and don’t function properly, this may lead to chronic infection and inflammation.”
Bacteria from outside can get into the vagina and go up through the cervix into the uterus.
“We look at the vulva lips to see if they are doing their job

and staying sealed. We can feel the cervix when the mare is in not in heat and determine whether the cervix is competent and closes properly. We can also do culture and cytology to identify any inflammation or bacteria in the uterus,” Wolfsdorf said.
Sometimes bacteria can hide; there can be endometritis or inflammation deep within the uterus caused by bacteria, fungi or yeast.
“Sometimes they are not very evident, and we need to look deeper. They may be hidden in mucus, or in a biofilm, or even within the endometrium itself [deep in the tissue]. There are other diagnostics we can do—to find pathogens in the tissues or embedded in the biofilm or mucus,” Wolfsdorf said.
“We can also do an endometrial biopsy. These biopsies are graded 1, 2a, 2b and 3. This grade gives a predictive index to identify the likelihood of the mare being able to carry a foal to term, but can also provide other information. It shows the individual abnormalities within the endometrium and can identify inflammation, density of endometrial glands, scarring around the glands, and vasculature (system of blood vessels) abnormalities such as scar tissue. All these things help tell us what is abnormal with the uterus, to determine the best treatment plan, and how to best manage that mare when we breed her,” Wolfsdorf explains.
“We can also culture the biopsy. If bacteria are living deeper in the tissue we will be better able to identify them with a culture of the biopsy. If a mare has a deep-seated infection we can use a mucolytic that helps break down mucus, or a product called bActivate. This product activates the dormant streptococcus that can live within the endometrium, stimulating them to become metabolically active, which then allows us to be able to treat them,” Wolfsdorf said.
A current topic is dealing with biofilm.
“Mares with chronic endometritis may have certain strains of bacteria that can produce an extracellular polysaccharide matrix which forms as a scaffolding for the bacteria colonies to grow.
This matrix hides them and protects the bacteria which makes them more resistant to antibiotics and the mares’ own immune response,” she said.
There are several ways to deal with this problem and break down the biofilm.
“If we identify a biofilm with a biofilm assay, we can determine which antibiotic to use and which products help break down that specific biofilm. We may need to think about the possibility that bacteria may be producing a biofilm if we are not getting to the bottom of it with appropriate therapies. We now have some new therapies to help,” she says.
OTHER CAUSES OF INFERTILITY
“We also look for genetic abnormalities. If a mare gets pregnant and loses it at 30 days, sometimes there are chromosomal or allele translocations. Another cause could be an underlying infection,” she says.
“We also check for cervical tears that may occur during foaling. Those mares generally have a history of chronic endometritis. No matter how well we treat them, they continue to have endometritis, so it’s important to check the cervix.” Until you fix the damaged cervix it cannot provide a good seal.
There are several ways to repair the cervix.
“One thing you have to remember is that once you repair a cervix, it won’t be able to relax properly. This can cause the mare to retain fluid in her uterus post breeding. She must also be monitored when she foals, because she may tear it again, so it may need to be repaired after each foaling,” says Wolfsdorf.
“One of the things we tend to overlook is a mare’s perineal conformation (vulva). Some maiden mares, even though the vulva is perpendicular to the ground, don’t have a very good seal. If they suck air, or fecal contamination enters the uterus no matter what you do, a uterine infection will continue to occur. This is often the first place I look when examining a mare, to make sure she has a Caslick if she needs one. Sometimes she may need an even more

aggressive surgery like a Pouret or Gadd technique. These are basically procedures to reconstruct the perineum, adding more tissue to try to correct the conformation and seal the vulva,” she explains.
Another procedure that can help identify a problem is hysteroscopic examination; this is an exam using an endoscope to look within the uterus. “This can help identify fluid, adhesions, C-section scars that may be a nidus of infection, or any foreign bodies. We can identify the oviducts and the oviductal papillae (the openings of the oviducts into the uterus),” she said.
BLOCKED OVIDUCT
Occasionally a mare might have a blocked oviduct.
“Usually everything else is ruled out before we think about the oviducts as a problem. Mares with blocked oviducts generally have a specific history. They may be in their mid to older years, with good reproductive conformation, no evidence of endometritis, and have been bred to fertile stallions but haven’t produced an embryo or a pregnancy,” Wolfsdorf said.
There are now some new therapies that can be tried if other treatments have not worked and a blocked oviduct is suspected.
ENDOMETRIAL CYSTS
Endometrial cysts occasionally can become a problem and can be found using ultrasound.
“Sometimes they are in the wall of the uterus, or protruding into the uterus. They are a sign of an underlying problem such as blocked lymphatics. The lymphatics help drain the uterus; contraction of the lymphatics and the uterus drains the uterus. When the lymphatics are blocked the mare is unable to drain the
uterus appropriately and may accumulate fluid. The presence of endometrial cysts tells us the mare probably does not drain her uterus very well and probably needs some help doing this,” Wolfsdorf said.
The only time uterine cysts might be a problem themselves is if there are numerous cysts or there is a large cyst that blocks the lumen of the uterus. When the embryo comes down through the oviduct and enters the uterus it needs to be able to move around— from one side of the uterus to the other—before it fixes in the base of a horn. This movement of the embryo tells the mare she is pregnant.
“This is how maternal recognition occurs. If a cyst blocks the embryo’s ability to move, the mare will not recognize she is pregnant and will return to heat. The other thing that may happen is that the embryo will attach next to a large cyst or numerous cysts and then cannot get the appropriate amount of nutrients.”
Thus if a cyst is very large, or there are many, removal may be necessary.
“Some cysts can also be frustrating because they may make it more difficult to identify an embryo with ultrasound because sometimes the cysts can be very round. We can monitor these; we can map the cysts before the mare is bred, or right after she ovulates, so we know exactly where they are. Then when we ultrasound the mare for pregnancy we can more readily differentiate between the cysts and the pregnancy.”
There are a couple ways to get rid of problem cysts. One is to remove the smaller ones during a hysteroscopic exam with a laser.
“If there is a large cyst we can go into the uterus and place a wire suture around the cyst to cut it out. This takes away that the obstacle that may impede movement of the embryo,” she said. TFH
