OCALA, FL—Ocala Breeders’ Sales started the 2022 2-year-olds in training sales season March 15-16 with their prestigious March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training and the auction produced four seven-figure juveniles and two days of brisk trading with increases in gross sales and averages.

The four millionaires were the most at the OBS March sale since 2017 when five juveniles sold for at least $1 million dollars.

This year’s March Sale recorded $49,498,000 in gross sales from 371 thoroughbred juveniles compared to last year when 325 sold for $37,970,000, resulting in a 30% improvement. The average price for the two-day sale was $132,119 compared to $116,831 last year, equating to a $13% increase while the median jumped 25% from $60,000 a year ago to $75,000 this year.

“We’re delighted with the results. We thought there was a lot of strength in the marketplace at all levels and it bodes well as we move into the April Sale,” OBS director of sales Tod Wojciechowski said.

Hip 318 started the second day off with a bang as a colt by More Than Ready sold for $1.2 million to K S I from the consignment of Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables Inc. as agent. The bay colt is out of Broad Spectrum, by Indian Charlie, making him a half-brother to stakes-placed Broad Approval and he worked an eighth-mile in :9.80 at the under tack show. Broad Spectrum is also a half-sister to Grade 3 Indiana Derby-winner Dynamic Impact.

Japanese trainer and agent Hideyuki Mori purchased the first million-dollar juvenile during the first day of the auction when he went to $1.1 million for Hip 257 from the Eddie Woods as agent consignment. The bay colt is by Into Mischief out of Zapara, by Not For Love and is a half-brother to stakes-placed Basso. Zapara is a half-sister to Santa Anita Oaks (G1)-winner Hedonist, Brooklyn Handicap (G2)-winner Seeking Daylight, stakes-winner Zaha, stakes-placed Gold Player and stakes-producer Cat Play. The colt worked an eighth-mile in :9.80 at the under tack session. Mori and Woods also topped their respective constituents as Mori led all buyers while signing the tickets on seven head for $3,550,000 and Woods sold 24 young thoroughbreds for $6,393,000. Spendthrift, BSW/Crow Colts Group, Broman outlasted all bidders on the second seven-figure 2-year-old, getting Hip 277 for $1 million. Consigned by Sequel Bloodstock as agent for Chester and Mary Broman, the colt is also by Into Mischief but out of the Roman Ruler mare Artemis Agrotera, a multiple Grade 1 winner of the Ballerina and Frizette. Artemis Agrotera has also produced stakes-winner Chestertown. The bay colt worked an eighth-mile in :10.20 at the under tack show. Chestertown, by Tapit, was also an OBS March Sale topper having sold for $2 million in 2019 to West Point, Masiello and Siena Farm from the consignment of Sequel Bloodstock. Hip 532 also hit seven figures on the money board as Donato Lanni as agent, put in the final bid of $1 million to acquire the bay daughter of Triple Crown-winner American Pharoah out of Just Parker, by Forest Camp. Just Parker is a half-sister to graded stakes-winner Qahira; stakes-winner Stormin’ Lyon and stakes-winner and graded stakes-producer Quick Flip. The filly was consigned by Top Line Sales LLC as agent and worked a furlong in :10 flat at the under tack session. Mori also went to $900,000 for Hip 438, a colt by first crop sire Bolt d’Oro out of Foolish Cause, by Giant’s Causeway. The colt is a half-brother to stakes-winner Foolish Humor, was consigned by Top Line Sales LLC as agent and worked an eighth-mile in :9.80 at the breeze show. That was the second consecutivebig purchase by Mori, who had Judit Seipert Photo just put in the final bid on Hip 437

Solid Sales Highlight OBS March Sale

for $700,000 from Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables Inc. as agent consignment. Named Mor Speed, the colt is from the first crop of sire Mor Spirit out of Follow My Tail, by Indian Charlie. He is a half-brother to stakes-winner Proofsinthepuddin and stakesplaced Red Raider and breezed a furlong in :9.80 Friday.

Hip 93 sold for $600,000 to Fawzi Abdulla Nass. Consigned by Eddie Woods as agent, the chestnut colt is by Gun Runner out of Sacre Coeur, by Saint Ballado making him a half-brother to 2017 Eclipse Award Champion Turf Female and 2014 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1)-winner Lady Eli, multiple Grade 3-winner Bizzy Caroline, graded-stakes-placed Princesa Caroline and graded stakes-producer Sacre Caroline. The colt worked a quarter-mile in :21.60 at the under tack session.

K S I also went to $600,000 to purchase Hip 291, a Florida-bred colt from the first crop of sire Bolt d’Oro out of the Uncle Mo mare Beautissimo, a half-sister to multiple graded stakesplaced, stakes-winner Two Thirty Five. The colt was consigned by Top Line Sales LLC as agent and worked an eighth-mile in :9.80 at the under tack show Thursday. The colt was bred in Florida by Loren Nichols.

Florida-based sires also were well represented in the March Sale led by Ocala Stud’s 2019 leading Florida stallion Adios Charlie, sire of Hip 213, who sold for $410,000 to the West Point/Talla Racing, Lane’s End Bloodstock as agent from the Ocala Stud as agent consignment. The Florida-bred filly is out of the A.P. Jet mare Travelator and is a half-sister to recent $100,000 Fishtown Stakes-winner Hollywood Jet, who won his fifth consecutive race in the Fishtown. Travelator has also produced stakes-placed Sweetheart Deal, graded stakes-producer Fantasy Forest, graded stakes-producer Tranquil Song and is herself a half-sister to stakes-winner Top Shooter and stakes-placed Runaway Raj. The filly was bred by William J. Terrill and Frank De Savino and is eligible for the rich FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes program. Ocala Stud’s first crop sire Awesome Slew was represented by Hip 456, who sold to Klaravich Stable Inc. for $400,000. The Florida-bred colt is out of Genau, by Into Mischief and was sold from the Ocala Stud consignment. Also bred by Ocala Stud, the bay colt is eligible for the rich FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes and is from the family of multiple graded stakes-winner Western Pride. Girvin, who is another freshman sire standing at Ocala Stud, had Hip 198, a Florida-bred filly out of The Shady Lady, by Quality Road drop the gavel at $240,000 when One Up Bloodstock outlasted all bidders. The Shady Lady is a half-sister to stakes-winner and graded-placed Courtesan, stakes-winner and stakes-producer Chary and stakes-producer Lady Carlotta. The filly was also consigned by Ocala Stud and bred by Ocala Stud, Joseph M. O’Farrell III and David O’Farrell, et al., and is eligible for the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes. Ocala Stud stallion Noble Bird had a colt sell as Hip 403 and went to $105,000 on the money board from the Hawk’s Rest LLC consignment. Purchased by TMC, the colt is out of East Lake Classic, by Orientate, making him a half-brother to stakes-place Maravillosa Pena. The colt was bred in Florida by Sherry R. Mansfield and Kenneth H. Davis. Bridlewood Farm resident Tunwoo also had a filly from his first crop hit six figures with Hip 135 selling to Susan Chu for $100,000 from the consignment of Julie Davies LLC as agent. The filly is out of Soiree Stunner, by Drewman, a half-sister to stakes-placed runners Partying and Kelly’s Tartan and is eligible for the Florida Sire Stakes and was bred by Tanma Corp.
