Equine Health Entry Requirements P

rotecting the health of your horse and other horses at HITS Ocala Winter Circuit is of the utmost importance to HITS. To that end HITS has implemented required biosecurity measures to decrease the risk of introduction and/or spread of contagious or infectious disease at its shows. Horses must arrive only between the hours of 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Off-hours arrival must obtain permission from show management by calling 352-620-2275 24 hours prior to arrival.

Andre Thieme

UPON ARRIVAL TO POST TIME FARM, ALL HORSES MUST HAVE:

Signed by the owner/agent/trainer verifying that the horse has been healthy with no sign of infectious disease and has not had a fever above 102°F within 72 hours of arrival. An Event Participation Declaration Form is available in this prize list and at HitsShows.com. A new Event Participation Declaration Form must be filed each time the horse enters the property. Horses stabled off the property that “ship-in” on a regular basis must comply with this requirement as well as additional requirements noted on the following pages. Visit HitsShows.com for further details.

PROOF OF VACCINATION A signed statement from the attending veterinarian that the horse has been vaccinated against the following: Within six months of each show: Equine Influenza Within three months of each show: EHV 1 and EHV 4 If a vaccination will expire during one of the shows, the horse must receive its new vaccination prior to being issued a competition number for that show.

Welcome

to HITS Ocala A brief overlook of the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit in 2016 H

its Ocala is hosting a 10-week USEF-rated circuit this year. It began Jan. 19 and runs through March 20. All 10 weeks have been USEF Nationalor Premier-rated Hunters. All shows count toward the Horseware Ireland Grand Circuit Awards, Marshall & Sterling Insurance League, and the HITS Championship in Saugerties, N.Y. this September. The Great American $1 Million Grand Prix returns to the stage in the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium on Sunday, March 27. The second jewel of the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping debuted with great success in 2014 and we look forward to treating exhibitors and spectators alike to another tremendous event! The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup CSIO4*, an official World Ranking Competition, took place Friday, Feb. 19 during the Ocala Winter Festival. Over $400,000 was offered in the FEI Jumper division throughout the week, including $200,000 in the Nations Cup and $150,000 in the Grand Prix. The Overlook VIP Club offered a unique hospitality experience including world-class culinary presentation, complete with complimentary beer and wine service. The Ocala Horse Properties Stadium is the full-time Grand Prix Ring. The stadium, located on HITS property just across 137th Avenue, opened to rave reviews two years ago. The former Grand Prix Ring is Jumper Ring 1 and provided a second Feature Jumper Ring for horses and riders moving up the ranks. The Overlook VIP Club has been at the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium for the entire circuit, serving breakfast and lunch each show day throughout the circuit. The former VIP area was replaced by a lovely cafĂŠ serving breakfast and lunch, with covered seating overlooking Jumper Ring 1 and the Main Hunter Ring.

Footing in all the Hunter Rings and Hunter Schooling Areas has been redone to match the footing in the Main Hunter Ring. Follow the progress on our Facebook page. The safety and well-being of your horses, and peace of mind for you, is our top priority. Over the past year, HITS has been at the forefront of implementing a standard Equine Health Protocol at all its shows. The Bio-Security Plan and Required Vaccination Protocol that HITS developed is being emulated across the country. Please be sure to review the requirements as printed in the prize list, and check HitsShows.com prior to your arrival to review the most up-to-date information.

With $3 million in prize money and qualifiers for all the HITS Championship classes, HITS offers something special for everyone, every week. HCD

From the A spectator’s guide to show jumping By HITS Staff

I

t’s beautiful, it’s impressive and it’s exciting, but I just don’t get it. If, while sitting in the grandstand at a horse show, you find yourself thinking these things, you’re not alone. Have no fear, however, HITS has put together a guide to horse shows for the avid or perhaps notso-avid spectator. The following will give you an insider’s look at the horse show world and how to navigate all that you will see during HITS Ocala Winter Circuit.

WHAT YOU’RE WATCHING AND HOW TO JUDGE IT: JUMPERS—Jumper classes, like the March 27

ESI PHOTO

Great American $1 Million Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for an error. A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part

of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a second that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner. HUNTERS—Hunter classes judge the horse. A hunter should have a long, low, ground-covering stride and jump the fences easily, smoothly and with consistent pace. Hunters are quiet, exhibit good manners both over fences and under saddle and jump courses that involve

Grandstand direct lines and straight-forward fences, usually designed with natural elements and colors. At the conclusion of over -fences classes, hunters are often asked to jog for soundness. They trot in a line in front of the judge before placings are made final. The judge will evaluate the horse’s conformation, health and overall gait both during the class and in the jog. At the end of class, a judge will assign a hunter and its rider a numerical score out of 100 based on how well they executed the course and how professional they looked doing it. Shiny boots, well-tailored clothes and a smartly groomed horse all count in the hunter ring. EQUITATION—Equitation classes judge the rider on their form, their guidance of the horse, effectiveness of their aids, position of legs, hands and upper body position, and the ability to perform certain tests with style and precision. The rider’s legs should be perpendicular to the ground and quiet with the heel down. Their hands should be supple and follow the movement of the horse’s head. The upper body should be upright, but relaxed with a slight arch in the lower back. The rider’s head should be up and looking forward. Equitation classes are generally judged on the flat at the walk, trot and canter and over fences. Equitation riders, like hunter riders, are assigned a score out of 100 by a judge based on their performance. The highest score wins the blue. Learn these terms and you will be on the way to impressing all your “horsey” friends STRIDE – the amount of ground a horse covers. At the canter, the average stride of a horse is 12 feet. The distances between fences of jumping courses are set accordingly. SCHOOLING – practice or training before competition. The riders practice in a schooling area and are not allowed to practice on the actual course. ORDER OF GO – the order in which the competitors compete over the set course.

COURSE WALK – riders walk the course to measure the number of strides their horse will need between each jump. FAULTS – numerical penalties assigned for downed rails, refusals or going over the time allowed. TIME ALLOWED – the time, determined by the course designer, that it should take a horse to navigate a jumper course. REFUSAL – a horse that stops in front of a fence and will not attempt to jump it. CLEAN/CLEAR – when the horse and rider complete all jumps on the course without a single jumping or time fault. JUMP-OFF – the riders who have a clean round compete in a timed jump-off over a shortened course to determine the winner of the class. TACK – the equipment used on the horse including the saddle and the bridle. COMBINATION – two or more jumps set close together and designed to be jump with fewer strides in between and judged as one element. LIVERPOOL – a fence set over water or a

ditch filled with water that horse and rider must clear. GREEN – a horse, usually young, with little experience. HCD

USA! USA!

After memorable effort, Dream Team comes through to take Nations Cup OCALA –

T

he U.S. dream team of Beezie Madden, McLain Ward, Todd Minikus and Lauren Hough, led by Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland, claimed a memorable victory at the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup CSI04, presented by Edge Brewing Barcelona, at HITS Post Time Farm on Friday, Feb. 19.

The U.S. team not only won the class and a piece of the $112,900 prize purse, it also secured a spot at the top of the 2016 FEI Nations Cup rankings for the Furusiyya Final in Barcelona later this year. The stage was set at HITS Post Time Farm with two soldout VIP clubs, a bustling grandstand and thousands viewing a live FEI TV webcast, all waiting to see which of the eight teams – Australia, Canada, Colombia, El Sal-

vador, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand or the U.S. – would go home with a win. Competitors did not disappoint their fans. A total of 31 riders from across the globe contested the FEI Nations Cup course set with 12 obstacles at 1.60-meters and designed by Alan Wade of Ireland. The first three competitors – Luke Dee (of New Zealand, aboard Aucland De I’enclos), Daniel Bluman (of Colombia aboard Conconcreto Sancha LS) and Shane Sweetnam (of Ireland, aboard Eregast van’t Kiezelhof) – all sped through the course with hopes of going clear, but fell victim to penalties during their attempts. It wasn’t until Matt Williams (of Australia, aboard Valinski S) entered the ring did onlookers see a clear round. Williams was just over the time allowed leaving him with one time fault and Australia for the lead. The crowd went silent as the fifth rider in the order, Ward of the U.S., and Rothchild, appeared at the ingate. In true Ward fashion, he gave spectators just what they wanted – a clean round. “Alan did a spectacular job as usual. We were actually speaking at dinner about what a fan we all are of his courses. When I walked the course I thought it was quite big, but straightforward enough. I was a little concerned,” said McLain. “We have a strong team here and we wanted it to be difficult but I was thinking it might ride a little too easy.” Second to ride for the Team USA was 2015 Nations Cup Ocala alumni, Lauren Hough piloting Cornet. Careful in their step, they cruised over the obstacles but trouble at the triple would cost them four faults. Competition grew fierce, and the audience more engaged, waiting to see who, if anyone, could best McLain. Third to ride for Colombia, Fernando Cardenas and Quincy Car, whipped through the turns of the course, going clear and confirming that a race to first place was on. Pressure was building for the US’ Pan American Games Bronze Medalist and 2014 HITS Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix winner Todd Minikus and Babalou. Keeping his cool, Minikus went fault free to continue his team’s success. The next few trips ended with penalties for downed rails but that came to a halt when Scott Keach and Fedor rode fourth, representing the Land Down Under. Keach led his bay mount to a clean finish for Australia’s only zero fault score in Round 1. The chase continued for the final US rider of the round, Beezie Madden and Breitling LS, who once again proved that she is the ultimate horsewoman. Careful and efficient, Madden cleared the final jump as the crowd erupted in cheers. After the FEI Nations Cup scoring format was applied, dropping the highest penalty from each team, the standings going into the second round had the USA in first, Colombia in second with Mexico trailing by one point in third, Australia in fourth, Ireland in fifth, New Zealand in sixth, Canada in seventh and El Salvador in eighth. Round 2 commenced as “Oohs” and “Ahs” filled the air for 14 Horse Capital Digest • February 26, 2016

the first six riders who all had rails in their paths leading to penalties against their teams. Seventh in the Round 2 order was Daniel Bluman of Colombia, who was ready for redemption and rode his 13year-old bay to a zero fault finish. Ward, who was the next trip of the day, hoped for a repeat performance from his Round 1 success but a rail at the second obstacle of the combination would result in four faults, leaving it up to his teammates to pull through for a win. “I think riding for your country is the ultimate goal or dream, and when you get the opportunity you certainly want to do a good job,” said Ward. “These three riders here and the Chef d’Equipe – I have the utmost respect for them and I consider them my friends. I didn’t want to let them down.” Troubled trips leading to scoresheet faults continued for the second wave of riders with only one, Ireland’s Cian O’Connor and Sam du Challois, going clear. As Hough prepared to ride second for her team she was determined to put it all on the line and trust in her gifted, four-legged partner. She would have two rails in the triple combination for eight faults but that didn’t mean the US was out of the game just yet. “The first round he withheld himself a bit at the triple and I knew I had to really ride him strong in the second round, where he held himself even more. I was lucky to actually get out of the triple with only two down,” said Hough of her 12year-old gray mount. “I still had a long way to go and I fought really hard to make it home. Thank goodness I have three strong teammates here.” Third to ride for their country, Canada’s Amy Millar and Heros; New Zealand’s Claudia Hay and Euro Sport Centavos; Ireland’s Richie Moloney and Ypaja Yando; Australia’s Thomas McDermott and Quick Petite Folie; Mexico’s Fed-

erico Fernandez and Guru, and Colombia’s Fernando Cardenas and Quincy Car, as well as America’s Todd Minikus and Babalou, all left the ring with faults, leaving the crowd questioning who would pull through as the champion. Would the anchor riders clean up? Could a sleeper pull ahead and place in the top three? Only time would tell, but one thing was certain” Madden was the final trip of the day. The fourth rider for each team gave it everything they had, but once again fallen rails would keep them all from the top spot. A legendary anchor, Madden was on her A-game to close out the day. With precision and caution she navigated Breitling LS to a clear round and, although taking her time would cost her one time fault, she sealed the deal for a Team USA win. “I had a nice position because I could afford to have two rails down and still win, so as an anchor rider that is one of the best positions you can be in. Thanks to these guys [pointing to her teammates] we were in that position,” said Madden. Humble in her win, Madden gave credit to her partner, adding, “I took a little extra time with the second round. He is just now starting to get pretty dependable at this level and we couldn’t be more excited about him.” Dressed to the nines in Furusiyya coolers and sashes, with smiles larger than life, the home team took a well-deserved victory lap in the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium as the National Anthem carried throughout the stands. Beaming with pride, Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland praised his teams’ performance, “We knew coming in that the com-

petition was going to be tough. We had to bring our best team to be able to have a chance to win. “It was definitely stressful and we did it a little bit differently than in the last few years. We had a habit of easing off in the first round, unintentionally, and come back in the second. “We did come with our best and we were fortunate to come away with the win. We are fortunate to be where we are.” Ridland continued, acknowledging HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri for a superior event in the heart of horse country: “Tom, you and your staff at HITS, and of course the sponsors, did a tremendous job in putting this on. A beautiful course and an incredible crowd on a Friday afternoon, it couldn’t have been better.” A common theme of patriotism and honor continued during the post-event press conference, with course designer Alan Wade adding, “It is a great honor to be chosen as the course designer for the Nations Cup. Everyone that competed in that class - you cannot take that away from them. They were chosen as the best in their country in the sport and whether you had a rail down or three down that is something you cannot take away from them. They represented their country on that stage.” Struzzieri said, “When we hired Alan for this class it was unlike most hires. It was moving to hear him talk about it. It is really important to him and it’s even more important to me to hear his sentiments. “It was great to have this team that Robert brought here. I can’t imagine how it must be to ride for the US team because I was moved to hear the anthem at the end, and that made it worthwhile for me.” HCD Final results on next page

The crowd went silent waiting to see if Keach could one-up Little as he navigated Fedor through the course with no disturbed rails in his path. Speeding through the timers, in a faultfree 43.71 seconds, Keach soon found his name at the top of the scoreboard. America’s Christine McCrea and Candy Tribbe’s Win for Life followed Keach in the jump-off order and, after a majestic first round, she was hoping for a similar outcome in the second. With a swift, clear round, McCrea was close, but her time of 47.59 placed her just behind Little.

he final day of FEI competition at HITS Post Time Farm here came to an exciting close Sunday, Feb. 21, with a jump-off battle in the $100,000 FEI City of Ocala Grand Prix. Australia’s Scott Keach and Southern Cross Equestrian’s Fedor took home the top spot and a $33,000 prize check. Fifty-one decorated riders, including American stars McLain Ward, Ian Millar and Beezie Madden, tested the course of 13 jumping efforts set at 1.60 meters by Alan Wade of Ireland, but Continued on next page only nine advanced to the jump-off round. Hot off their FEI Welcome Stake win earlier in the week here, America’s Marilyn Little and Raylyn Farms’ Corona were next in line. Little’s gray mount gave it her all as she cleared every fence in her way, crossing the timers in 44.87 to move straight to the top of the leaderboard. Little, a Pan American Games gold medalist in three-day eventing, gave credit to Corona, saying “She’s got incredible scope, she’s incredibly careful and she’s got an incredible heart, so I really couldn’t ask for much more from a horse. She loves the game … she goes in there and gives you everything. You can count on her every time.” Next in the order was America’s Brandie Holloway riding the Hays Investment Corp.’s Lucky Strike. Although they were off to a careful start, three rails down during the trip would result in 12 faults in a time of 45.49. Keach was waiting in the wings, ready to make his home country of Australia proud with a memorable round for the books. www.horsecapitaldigest.com 19

Mexico’s Federico Fernandez and Paola Amilibia’s Guru rode into the ring for the second to last trip of the day, and they kept spectators on their feet until the very last jump. Careful in his craft, Fernandez moved with accuracy over every jump and raced through the timers for the third clear of the jump-off in 43.95, to place just behind Keach. The last trip was legendary American anchor rider Beezie Madden, who on the previous Friday helped the US team to a win in the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup CSIO4, presented by Edge Brewing Barcelona. In perfect harmony with Abigail Wexner’s Vanilla, they made their way through the course, but again, a rail at the challenging second fence of the combination would seal their fate. With four faults and a time of 43.29, Madden moved into fifth place, leaving Keach in first, Fernandez in second, Little in third and McCrea in fourth. “I’m very happy with how the horse jumped. I couldn’t have expected any more. In the last six months he has really improved, stepped up and really started to jump some clean rounds. I’m very happy,” said Keach, who has become more serious about show jumping in the past four years after a successful career in three-day eventing. “The courses all week have been fantastic, but Mexico’s Federico Fernandez and Paola Amilibia’s Guru took second place everyone knows Alan Wade is a very good course builder.” Delighted with the day’s events, Fernandez added, The seventh trip of the jump-off belonged to America’s Cara “I’m thrilled to be here. It has been a fantastic week and I’ve enRaether and Trelawny Farm’s Lyonell. After a clear first jump, joyed it enormously. The course jumped incredibly and the conRaether found trouble with the second fence of the combination, ditions were perfect. The course designer [Alan Wade] was totaling three downed rails, 12 total faults as they crossed the brilliant throughout the entire weekend.” HCD marker in 51.42.

Not only were competitors vying for a prestigious FEI victory as the prelude to the 2016 Nations Cup at HITS Post Time Farm on Friday, but the class also served as a qualifying opportunity for the $100,000 City of Ocala Grand Prix the following Sunday, Feb. 21. Aaron Vale of Williston, has been a force to be reckoned this circuit. With two Grand Prix victories and multiple Top 5 finishes already under his belt this circuit, the hometown hero of Ocala show jumping did not disappoint, winning the race against the clock. “My goal was to be fast everywhere,” said Vale. “You had to be, the jump-off just got quicker and quicker, and it was a great class.” Indeed, all five top finishers jumped double-clear out of the 17 in the jump-off, and the time to beat seemed to get faster with every round. The jump-off was designed around three lines that allowed riders to gallop and utilize their speed skills. Excitement burst in the stands as riders galloped to

the in-and-out before turning to the last line which could be done in seven or eight strides, but where many a heartbreak came as rails fell and dashed the hopes of would-be winners. Of the top-five in the jump-off, the first to return Ali Wolff and Brianda, co-owned with John Wolff. They were the first to finish fault-free taking the lead as they crossed the timers in a brisk 39.77 seconds. Lisa Goldman of Hawthorne Woods, Ill., also a multiple Grand Prix winner this circuit, entered the ring a few trips later aboard Centurion B, owned by Goldman’s mother and trainer Mary Goldman. Hunting for another victory, Goldman attacked the course, angling fences and galloping across the ring to the final in-andout before the homestretch line. They crossed the marker in 38.57 to take the lead but the ensuing rounds would only get faster. Mexico’s Juan Jose Zendejas Salgado and Tino la Chapelle, owned by IIan Ferder galloped to the in and out, taking a tight turn before the final line to shave time off the clock and putting in a clear 37.25-second round to clock in almost a full second ahead of Goldman to top the leaderboard as the Mexican team cheered in enthusiasm. Vale and Finou 4, owned by Thinkslikeahorse and Donald Stewart, checked back in to the ring and the crowd was electric and chomping at the bit as Vale took up a gallop to the first fence. “I didn’t get to watch Zendajas Salgado, but I knew if he had been faster than Lisa [Goldman], I had to be really, really fast if I was going to win,” he said. Vale took advantage of his horse’s big stride, leaving out strides in all three lines. “It felt like we were flying in that last gallop towards the inand-out. I just kept going until I saw the spot where I could relax and my horse just softened and mentally slowed down to jump up quite nicely.” Vale kept the momentum going to the last line, doing the seven strides, edging out Zendejas Salgado just a tenth of second on 37.01 to take the lead. Many valiant efforts followed Vale, including Christian Heineking and AJE Cluny, with a heartbreaking rail at the final fence for ninth-place and Molly Ashe, jumping clear to round out the Top 5 with a time of 40.97. The deal was sealed and Vale took home the win putting Juan Jose Zendejas Salgado and Tino la Chapelle in second-place and Lisa Goldman and Centurion B in third.

FEI WELCOME STAKE Day 1 of the FEI CSIO4 week at HITS Post Time Farm here ended on a high note for Marilyn Little, of Frederick, Md., who took home first place with Raylyn Farms Inc.’s Venus, and third place with Karen O’Connor’s Clear Water, in the FEI Welcome Stake. Excitement for Friday, Feb. 19, main event filled the air as competition got underway. Forty-two riders hailing from across the globe tested the 1.40meter course set by Ireland’s Alan Wade. First in the order and with determination fueling their game, Little and her bay mount Venus dominated the course from the moment they stepped foot inside the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium. Fiercely attempting each obstacle, the pair zipped through the course to clock in clear, and in a time of 59.43. “It was a really fast course, and the footing was great. Alan Wade did a good job building a nice introductory course and there were a lot of people in the class, FEI Welcome Stake many who were prepping for what’s to come later in the week, and some Place Horse Venus 1 really taking a shot,” said Little. “I Ciana 2 had to go first in the class, so I knew Clear Water 3 I had some fast ones coming behind Analyze This 4 me, especially Andy Kocher. True to Taloubet 5 form, he was very quick, but Venus Val d’Isere 6 is a speed racer.” Warrant 7 Seventh in the order, Kevin Mark Q 8 OhLaLa 9 Babington, of Gwynedd Valley, Pa., Winston 10 and his own Mark Q, followed LitBariano 11 tle’s lead with a crisp, clean round, Christofolini H 12 but were just over the 79 second time 24 Horse Capital Digest • February 26, 2016

Babington remained in second until the 12th entry, Diego Jose Muyshondt, riding for El Salvador, and Paulo Santana’s Val d’lsere, cleared the course in 80.47 for one time fault and the second-place spot. Muyshondt held his own until known speedster and a familiar name in the HITS Ocala winner’s circle this year, Andrew Kocher, of Lake St Louis, Mo., appeared at the in-gate. Kocher, aboard Ciana, owned by Eagle Valley Partners, LLC., delivered a quick round in a time of 61.58, moving him up the leaderboard to second. Little, piloting her second of two entries, Clear Water, was 24th in the order and she had her eye on the prize again. They sailed through the course for a clear round finishing with a time of 62.18, just one second behind Kocher for third. Thomas Feigel, of Pompano Beach, and Analyze This, were 26th and ready to chase the clock. Zipping through the course with precision and finishing clean with a time of 73.74 to secure the fourth-place finish. Anchoring the order of go, Paulo Sergio Mateo Santana Filho of Wellington, and his own Talubet, was the fifth and final rider to give a clean round. Though certainly not a surprise, it is still always amazing to see our in-state thoroughbred industry numbers in terms of how they fit with and relate to Florida’s economy. A recent 2013 conservative study conducted by nationally acclaimed pari-mutuel and gaming economists Cummings & Associates of horse breeds from the pari-mutuel industry based in the Sunshine State provided a handful of very impressive equine economic impacts including:

■ $1 billion per year of Economic Impact ■ More than $400 million expended per year in local salaries and payroll taxes ■ More than 12,000 jobs ■ An annual economic impact state-wide far in excess of coveted baseball spring training

Goldman She and Morocco bag her third Smart Pak victory OCALA –

L

and NKH Calango clocked in clear but still could not overcome Goldman’s lead. Jonathon McCrea and Zerly followed Heineking, crossing the timers in 37.663, just one second behind Thieme’s round for the eventual fifth place. Goldman returned to the ring on her second jumpoff mount, trusted winning companion Morocco. They shaped the corner from the vertical coming home to the mid-course combination, shaving time off the clock with the tight turn. Another turn to the home stretch line quickened the pace as they sped through the timers in a blazing fast 34.780, moving ahead of her own round on Hindsight to take the lead. Australian Thomas McDermott, knew he had to be quick and clear to edge out Goldman. He and Airtime Z GHP galloped through the course, chasing Goldman’s time with their eye on the prize. They put in a precise round in 36.068, not enough to top Goldman’s winning score, but enough to move into second-place. Heather Caristo-Williams and Cosmopolitan 20 were the last team to test the jump-off. They f inished fault-free in 38.641, putting them in sixth. “It was a really fast class, the footing was great and it was a lot of fun to ride in,” said Goldman. “I knew I had to be quick because there were some very fast ones behind me.” HCD

isa Goldman and her Morocco have owned the leaderboard this winter at HITS Post Time Farm. Goldman is certainly no stranger to the winner’s circle, with multiple Grand Prix wins under her belt during the 2016 Ocala Winter Circuit. This week’s win marks the Hawthorn Woods, Ill., equestrian’s third time to win the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix this year. Goldman also garnered third-place to claim two spots in the Top 5. Irish course designer Alan Wade built a nice introductory course for the week that rode fast and created excitement in the stands. Ten horses and riders returned to the ring for the jump-off with eight going double-clear. With placings divided by mere seconds, the need for speed was the top priority to contend for the blue-ribbon title. Germany’s Andre Thieme and Cellisto, owned by Markus Fuchs, set the tone for the jump-off, clocking in fault-free in 37.234. Unfortunately for Thieme, his lead was short lived as Goldman, aboard her own mount, Hindsight, sped through the course, going clear with a 36.298-second round to move to the top. Another clear round came next for Canadian Kyle Dewar and his own Russell. They crossed the timers in 39.723, not quite fast enough to top the prior $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix trips but good enough to Place Horse Owner earn them seventh place. 1 Morocco Lisa Goldman Matthew Williams and 2 Airtime Z GHP Thomas Mcdermott Cuchina attempted the 3 Hindsight Lisa Goldman 4 Cellisto Markus Fuchs course next. Cup Jumping Final to be held in Gothenburg, Sweden, on March 23-28, but only one could claim the title. German designer Martin Otto set a course that created excites the crowd gathered to watch the $100,000 Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Thermal on Saturday, Feb. 13, ment for spectators in the stands and challenged the skill of each an impressive lineup of horses and riders from around horse and rider, which would ultimately separate three riders from the globe gathered to jump for the final West Coast qualifying op- the field for the jump-off. Tenth to go was France’s Eric Navet and Catypso, owned by Signe portunity and a $100,000 prize purse. As the last qualifying opportunity on the West Coast, riders were Ostby, testing the course of 16 jumping efforts. Navet and the powhungry for the opportunity to qualify for the Longines FEI World erful bay gelding took their time on the course as they navigated the track fence-by-fence in a precise, clear first-round. Olympian and World Cup Finals champion Rich $100,000 Longines FEI World Cup Fellers, and Flexible, owned by Harry and Mollie Place Horse Owner Rider Prize Chapman, followed Navet. Navet and Catypso returned to the ring first in the order for the jump-off to contend for the win. They had an unfortunate rail at the third fence of the shortened course, a wide oxer, to cross the timer in 51.13 seconds with four jumping faults. Barge knew a clean round would take the lead, and with a slow and carful trip, she did just that. The trek home to the final vertical excited the stands, and Barge and Luebbo crossed the timers in a fault free 49.64 to take the lead. The victory was yet to be determined and Nassar had to produce a fast, clear round to garner the win. He flew through the course, as the deceivingly fast, yet careful, Lordan negotiated each fence. Staying true to his plan, Nassar took the inside turn to the second-to-last fence to shave time off the clock, clocking in a full second faster than Barge at 48.19, and the title was theirs. “I took the inside to turn to the oxer by the gate; I didn’t get the chance to see Jamie go but people at the gate told me she was very efficient, so I knew I had to catch up to her there,” said Nassar. lthough they gave it their best shot, no other competitors could catch the gray Holsteiner Catch Me during the $100,000 World Championship Hunter Rider Peter Wetherill Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular. Piloted by Scott Stewart, Catch Me soared to a wellearned victory under the lights of the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center Saturday, Feb. 20. Kelley Farmer and the impressive mare Like I Said jumped to second place for owners Glefke and Farrington, LLC, while Christopher Payne guided Debbie Bass and Maypine Farm's elegant Truman to third place. Catch Me, owned by Becky and David Gochman, has risen above all odds to return to the show ring after a bout of botulism last spring almost ended his life. ited the staff at Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center and especially the dedication of Baxter Hill trainer Terence Prunty for nursing Catch Me, nicknamed Snoopy, through the illness. “Terence found Snoopy early on and, with botulism, seconds count,” said Becky. “By that time, his mouth and jaw were becoming paralyzed. If Terence hadn’t been there, Snoopy wouldn’t be alive right now. That’s why I feel he's just as much Terence’s horse as he is ours. He cares about that horse more than anything.” Stewart also credited Prunty for helping Snoopy recover and return to the show ring better than ever. When Stewart was deciding which horses to choose for the class, Prunty assured him that Snoopy was ready to go. Stewart and Catch Me stood second to Truman and Payne after the first round and returned with a bold performance to earn the night's highest scores of 95.5, 93 and 93 for a two-round score of 185.16 and the victory.

thrilled to finally lead his first victory gallop, especially aboard a horse he's come to respect and admire. “I’ve shown in this class a lot, and I’ve been second a lot, and lower, so I’m thrilled,” said Stewart. “He’s an amazing horse. After what he went through last year, it's just amazing that he's back and doing it,” he continued. “If you had asked me last week who I would ride this week in the class, it wouldn't have been this horse. He’s a great horse, but he’s really careful, and I thought he would be too spooky. Terence really deserves most of the credit. I just got on.” The $100,000 WCHR Peter Wetherill Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular was a featured event of the Winter Equestrian Festival circuit Week 6, the WCHR CSI 3. BECOME A round classic. Round 1 featured 10 jumping efforts and long gallops between obstacles with few related distances, while Round 2 had nine elements with turning options where riders could show off handiness and brilliance. A hand gallop to the final oxer encouraged riders to exhibit boldness. “He’s really a fun horse to ride,” Stewart said. “He was actually better under the lights than during the day. I thought he felt awesome. During Round 1, he was great. He was maybe (a little) long to jump 1 because he was so relaxed and quiet. He couldn’t have been any better in the handy. I was a little nervous going to the last jump because it was almost too much gallop, but he came up with it.” Farmer, of Keswick, Va., and Like I Said claimed second with a two-round score of 181.46. The 8-year-old Mecklenburg mare has garnered lots of attention in the three weeks she’s been competing in the hunter ring and was purchased earlier this week by

Pony Lane Farm. Like I Said’s sire is Carrico, the stallion that placed fifth in the class with Brady Mitchell in the irons-earned the First Year Green Working Hunter championship and the High Performance Working Hunter reserve championship during WEF 6. “She’s just been great every time she walks in the ring,” said Farmer. “She gives 110%. She’s really brave. We just sold her to the Thatchers, so I got to briefly ride her, and she’ll be moving on. She’s an unbelievable mare.” HCD

Now is an ideal time to consider energy usage on the farm

FARM M a n a g e M e n t

Save Money & Energy On the Farm

H

ello to all! I know that cold weather has been on anyone’s mind, but this is an ideal time of the year to consider energy usage on the farm Both the hot and cold times of the year use energy (think fans running in the summer and hot water/heaters in the winter) and these costs increase yearly. Just as energy and money savings can be realized by making your home more energy efficient, those same savings can also work in the barns. Running a farm takes up tremendous amounts of time and money, so investing that time now for efficiently “tightening up” the barn will save both the pocketbook and the environment. If the farm is lucky enough to have hot water, insulating the hot water heater can prove to be a considerable energy and money saver. That inefficient water heater can amount to as much as 15% of a home’s total energy usage and it can be even more of the total energy use in the barn. Tankless, on-demand water heaters can be another excellent option to help save energy. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, an on-demand, or tankless water heater can be 8 to 34 % more energy efficient than regular storage tank water heaters. Energy usage can be decreased even further (almost 50 %) if an on-demand water heater is installed at each hot water outlet. The tankless water heating version is the best, but if not possible, be sure to get a highly insulated storage tank to help with efficiency and savings. Solar water heating is also an excellent option to consider, especially for barns in sunny Florida. Gas heat generally provides the most efficient type of water heater, regardless of the chosen variety, but fluctuating prices of electricity vs. gas make either a potential option. If the barn has high ceilings, it is automatically in better shape because they stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, but a circulating fan will allow all the rising hot air to be mixed with the cooler air below. Any windows or holes in the walls should be weather

stripped and/or caulked to further improve energy efficiency. Don’t forget to fix leaky faucets that drip continually, even if only a slight drip. This stops hot water heaters from working overtime and it’s is also a superb way to both increase water savings and stop the misuse of potable (meaning drinkable) water. Another great place to improve energy efficiency is in the tack room or office heating. Energy-efficient electric space heaters and modern, stand-alone wood-fired heaters are two interesting options to investigate. Today’s electric space heaters are extremely efficient and quite safe for heating a room and wood-fired heaters typically work at around 75% efficiency (as opposed to the typical fifteen to 20% efficient open fire). Either choice works very well in single rooms. Since this wood fire heater would only be in use during the day when people are around, fire hazards can also be kept to a minimum. All farms have lots of wood lying (twigs, sticks, branches) around that ends up in a burn pile anyway, so using this waste product to efficiently and effectively give warmth may be ideal. Additionally, wood is carbon neutral and absorbs as much carbon during growth as is released into the atmosphere when burnt as fuel. Consider the barn’s water use, heating choices and open spaces circulation. A little time invested now can generate overall big savings. Contact me, or your local Extension Office, to get help with this and many other horse farm questions. As always, keep up the good management practices! HCD

Humble Beginning In Florida H ITS, Inc. is a special events management company primarily focused on producing hunter/jumper horse shows. Based in upstate New York in the village of Saugerties, HITS produced its first horse show circuit in Gainesville, Fla. in 1982. Many consider Florida to be the heart of HITS shows, which were originally produced in Gainesville in the ‘80s and then moved to Ocala in the mid-‘90s to accommodate increasing numbers and the need for rings and stabling. Since then, HITS has grown into a nationwide company with world-class hunter-jumper circuits in California, Florida, Arizona, New York and Virginia. In 2002, HITS moved to Ocala’s Post Time Farm and created a show jumping haven. Boasting 450 lush acres, the show grounds welcome all levels and kinds, from short stirrup to Olympic athletes, national champion campaigners to local baby greens. HITS produces three of the richest grand prix in the world with the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix in Thermal, Calif., the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix in Ocala, and the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix in Saugerties – all forming the Triple Crown of Show Jumping. The Great American $1 Million Grand Prix in Ocala is planned for March 27 which is the second jewel of the Triple Crown of show jumping. This is a fitting connection in Florida, as the state is also the birthplace of the 1978 American Triple Crown winner in thoroughbred racing, the great champion Affirmed, and served as the early training grounds for 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. The Grand Prix welcomes international talent from all corners of the world. The HITS Championship also hosts the HITS Saugerties $250,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Prix, as well as the crown jewels of the hunter discipline with the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final and the Platinum Performance $250,000 Hunter Prix Final. In 2011, HITS Inc. expanded its event-management repertoire into endurance sports and HITS Endurance was born. Under the HITS Endurance umbrella, both HITS Triathlon Series and HITS Running Festivals present top-notch triathlon and running races throughout the U.S. The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup found a home at HITS Post Time Farm during Week V of HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. On Friday, Feb. 19, international teams battled it out for global fame and their piece of a $200,000 purse. The key to HITS’ success is its strategy of producing a series of horse shows over continuous weeks, in desirable destinations, with first-class competition facilities and unmatched professional operations. Additionally, HITS offers competitive opportunities for riders in a broad range of ages and skill levels. Thomas G. Struzzieri has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of HITS since its inception. He has served on the Board of Directors of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) as well as its Competition Management Committee. He also served as chairman of USEF Zone 2. HITS has a professional, full-time staff of 35 employees, including a complete administrative staff, located at the company’s headquarters in Saugerties. Their level of experience and dedication guarantees superior execution of the details of all HITS horse shows. HCD
