Welcome
to HITS Ocala 2017 A brief overview of the 2017 HITS Ocala Winter Circuit W
e are pleased to announce that HITS Ocala, will be a 10-week USEF-rated circuit this year. All 10 weeks have been USEF National- or Premierrated Hunters. All shows count toward the Horseware Ireland Grand Circuit Awards, Marshall & Sterling Insurance League, and the HITS Championship in Saugerties, N.Y. this September. The Great American $1 Million Grand Prix returns to the stage in the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium on Sunday, March 26. The second jewel of the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping debuted with great success in 2014 and we look forward to treating exhibitors and spectators alike to another tremendous event! The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup CSIO4*, an official World Ranking Competition, will take place Friday, Feb. 17 during the Ocala Winter Festival. Over $400,000 was offered in the FEI Jumper division throughout the week, including $200,000 in the Nations Cup and $150,000 in the Grand Prix. The Overlook VIP Club offered a unique hospitality experience including world-class culinary presentation, complete with complimentary beer and wine service. The Ocala Horse Properties Stadium is the fulltime Grand Prix Ring. The stadium, located on HITS property just across 137th Avenue, opened to rave reviews three years ago. The former Grand Prix Ring is Jumper Ring 1 and provided a second Feature Jumper Ring for horses and riders moving up the ranks. The Overlook VIP Club will be at the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium for the entire circuit, serving breakfast and lunch each show day throughout the circuit. The former VIP area was replaced by a lovely cafĂŠ serving breakfast and lunch, with covered seating overlooking Jumper Ring 1 and the Main Hunter Ring. Footing in all the Hunter Rings and Hunter Schooling Areas has been redone to match the footing in the Main Hunter Ring. Follow the progress on our Facebook page. The safety and well-being of your horses, and peace of mind for you, is our top priority. Over
the past year, HITS has been at the forefront of implementing a standard Equine Health Protocol at all its shows. The Bio-Security Plan and Required Vaccination Protocol that HITS developed is being emulated across the country. Please be sure to review the requirements as printed in the prize list, and check HitsShows.com prior to your arrival to review the most up-to-date information.
With $3 million in prize money and qualifiers for all the HITS Championship classes, HITS offers something special for everyone, every week. HCD

From the A spectator’s guide to show jumping By HITS Staff
I
t’s beautiful, it’s impressive and it’s exciting, but if while sitting in the grandstand at a horse show, you find yourself thinking these things, you’re not alone. Have no fear, however, HITS has put together a guide to horse shows for the avid or perhaps not-so-avid spectator. The following will give you an insider’s look at the horse show world and how to navigate all that you will see during HITS Ocala Winter Circuit.
WHAT YOU’RE WATCHING AND HOW TO JUDGE IT: JUMPERS—Jumper classes, like the March 26
ESI PHOTO
Great American $1 Million Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for an error. A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part
of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a second that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner. HUNTERS—Hunter classes judge the horse. A hunter should have a long, low, ground-covering stride and jump the fences easily, smoothly and with consistent pace. Hunters are quiet, exhibit good manners both over fences and under saddle and jump courses that involve

Grandstand COURSE WALK – riders walk the course to measure the number of strides their horse will need between each jump. FAULTS – numerical penalties assigned for downed rails, refusals or going over the time allowed. TIME ALLOWED – the time, determined by the course designer, that it should take a horse to navigate a jumper course. REFUSAL – a horse that stops in front of a fence and will not attempt to jump it. CLEAN/CLEAR – when the horse and rider complete all jumps on the course without a single jumping or time fault. JUMP-OFF – the riders who have a clean round compete in a timed jump-off over a shortened course to determine the winner of the class. TACK – the equipment used on the horse including the saddle and the bridle. COMBINATION – two or more jumps set close together and designed to be jump with fewer strides in between and judged as one element. LIVERPOOL – a fence set over water or a
ditch filled with water that horse and rider must clear. GREEN – a horse, usually young, with little experience. HCD

direct lines and straight-forward fences, usually designed with natural elements and colors. At the conclusion of over -fences classes, hunters are often asked to jog for soundness. They trot in a line in front of the judge before placings are made final. The judge will evaluate the horse’s conformation, health and overall gait both during the class and in the jog. At the end of class, a judge will assign a hunter and its rider a numerical score out of 100 based on how well they executed the course and how professional they looked doing it. Shiny boots, well-tailored clothes and a smartly groomed horse all count in the hunter ring. EQUITATION—Equitation classes judge the rider on their form, their guidance of the horse, effectiveness of their aids, position of legs, hands and upper body position, and the ability to perform certain tests with style and precision. The rider’s legs should be perpendicular to the ground and quiet with the heel down. Their hands should be supple and follow the movement of the horse’s head. The upper body should be upright, but relaxed with a slight arch in the lower back. The rider’s head should be up and looking forward. Equitation classes are generally judged on the flat at the walk, trot and canter and over fences. Equitation riders, like hunter riders, are assigned a score out of 100 by a judge based on their performance. The highest score wins the blue. Learn these terms and you will be on the way to impressing all your “horsey” friends STRIDE – the amount of ground a horse covers. At the canter, the average stride of a horse is 12 feet. The distances between fences of jumping courses are set accordingly. SCHOOLING – practice or training before competition. The riders practice in a schooling area and are not allowed to practice on the actual course. ORDER OF GO – the order in which the competitors compete over the set course.

TIP expands its reach T
he Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program has announced that it will offer awards and classes at more than 1,000 shows in 42 states and six Canadian provinces in
2017. “The number of shows has grown every year since TIP’s inception,” said Kristin Werner Leshney the Jockey Club senior counsel and TIP coordinator. “It’s a testament to how popular the thoroughbred is as a sport horse and how many opportunities are offered to them when their careers in racing and breeding have ended.” Awards are available for multiple disciplines, including eventing, dressage, Western and English pleasure, hunter/jumper, Western performance, games, polo and polocrosse. Awards are also available at some events for thoroughbreds within their first two years of showing or for thoroughbreds within two years of their last start. TIP is continuing its Youth Ambassador Program in 2017 with four returning ambassadors (denoted with an asterisk below) and eight new. The ambassadors range from 10 states and Ontario and cover multiple disciplines, including hunters, jumpers, eventing, Western, dressage and equitation. *Ella Sciog – Florida Audrey Newbrey – Washington Caitlin Dinkel – Utah *Calista Plante – Maryland *Chloe Bellerive – Maryland and Kentucky Eliza Cart – Virginia Elizabeth Spann – Wisconsin Ella MacMaster – Vermont Kelsey Loft – Ontario Meredith Orme – Pennsylvania Morgan Kastner – Minnesota *Teri Simone – Ontario, Canada Additional information about the youth ambassadors is available at tjctip.com/Default.asp?page=youth. TIP also has two new offerings in 2017: the Thoroughbred Recreational Riding Incentive Program (TRRIP) and championships for certain divisions. Announced in November 2016, the TRRIP is designed for thoroughbred owners who spend most of their time outside of the show ring, whether on trails (including competitive trail rides), endurance rides, or even driving. “Many owners just want to enjoy their horses out on the roads and trails, which is another area in which thoroughbreds excel,” Leshney said. “The TRRIP enables them to
become involved with TIP and benefit even more from owning a thoroughbred.” Multiple awards are offered depending on the number of hours spent riding or driving, ranging from a TIP patch for 25 hours to a TIP fleece jacket for 10,000 hours. To receive awards, riders must record their riding time in one-hour increments, rounding down to the whole hour. Arena riding, lessons and show hours are not eligible for awards. For more information and to download reporting forms, click tjctip.com/Default.asp?page=17. The TIP championships have divisions for hunters, jumpers and English pleasure. To qualify for the championships, a thoroughbred must participate in a show offering TIP high point awards, classes or divisions in an applicable discipline between Sept. 1, 2016, and July 31, 2017, or participate in the 2016 TIP Performance Awards in an applicable discipline. After qualifying, owners and riders must declare their horse for the championships by submitting a horse declaration form: http://tjctip.com/Champ.asp. Created and announced in October 2011, TIP recognizes and rewards the versatility of the thoroughbred through sponsorship of thoroughbred classes and high point awards at sanctioned horse shows, performance awards, and non-competition awards. Additional information about TIP is available at tjctip.com and on the TIP Facebook page at facebook.com/tjctip. HCD

Ocala:

T
he $50,000 Equine Couture/Tuff Rider Grand Prix was an exciting and competitive class last Sunday at the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium.
Australian equestrian Scott Keach and his 12-year-old Olympic mount Fedor, owned by Southern Cross Equestrian of Reddick, Fla., was the fastest of four double-clear rounds to take home the win in the opening week of the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. “This is only the second class that Fedor has jumped this season,” said Keach. “I was unable to watch any of the other riders in the jump-off, so I just went as quickly as I could.” Brandi Holloway from Topeka, Kan., and Lucky Strike, owned by Hays Investment Corp., was second. Third place went to Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas, on MTM Reve du Paradis. The course of 16 elements was designed by Mauricio Garcia of Archer, Fla. Twenty six horse-and-rider combinations tackled the first-round course with 12 jumping first-round clears. The jump-off included several rollbacks, the B and C elements of the triple and finished over two separate airy verticals. Twelve horses in the jump-off assured everyone a piece of the prize money so everyone put pedal to the metal to earn a bigger piece of the pie. First to go clear was Fenney on MTM Reve du Paradis. Fenney and the gray were just nosed out of a win in the previous Thursday’s Smartpak Grand Prix and they put in another outstanding round to stop the clock at 39.246 to take the temporary lead. The next two to jump-off, Mattias Tromp and Nicole Bellisimo, had 12 faults each before Brandi Holloway and Lucky Strike took their shot. Angling the last jump paid off with a new Great American Time to Beat of 39.091 to take the lead. Moving ahead in the order while Fenney prepped her second mount, Fedor and Keach jumped a clear round riding the same track but, with Fedor’s quicker style in the air, they were to shave a fraction off Holloway’s time to take the lead in 38.728. Fenney returned on MTM Como No only to have a rail at the second to last fence, but they finished as the fastest with four faults for fifth place. Vale and Bonzini S had eight faults to finish eighth. Charlie Jayne and the super athletic Playboy appeared to have the winning time until they visibly slowed down in the approach to the last jump to finish clear with the fourth-fastest time of 40.351. Two more jumped off but no one was able to match the double clear performances of the top four. Keach was pleased with his horse’s performance, and hopes to build on this week’s win with all of his horses. “I plan on staying at HITS Ocala throughout the season. I have several young horses to bring along, as well as Fedor, and HITS offers the variety of classes I need for all of them.”

U DUMP JUNIOR/ AMATEUR-OWNER CLASSIC
Fernando Cardenas of New Hill, N.C., won the $7,500 U Dump Junior/Amateur-Owner Classic during Week 1 of the Ocala Winter Circuit. The victory came by the narrowest of margins, guiding his homebred stallion Quincy Car over second-place Moelissa Rudershausen of Mifflintown, Pa., on Charmeur Ask, and third-place Kady Abrahamson of Loveland, Ohio, on Charline 28. “It was close, this is an especially nice win for us since my father bred this horse. We’ve been with him the whole way,” said Cardenas. “Coming out of the winter where we live in North Carolina, he was a little out of shape, so we elected to do the amateurs instead of the Grand Prix and it was the perfect class for him.” The 1.45 meter-course designed by Mauricio Garcia of Archer, Fla., was comprised of 15 jumping efforts and proved to be challenging. Twenty competed in the first round with several contestants showing multiple horses. The time allowed was Rider Prize $ a factor with Haley Waters jumping a clear round on Fernando Cardnas $2,200 European import Don Juan H, but exceeding the time Melissa Rudershausen $1,550 Kady Abrahamson $1,050 allowed because two time faults placed her sixth. They turned tightly inside after Fence 3, galloped across the ring to the Liverpool, jumped cleanly through the combination toward the end of the course and rolled back to the final oxer to set the Great American Time to Beat at 39.731 with a cool, clear round. Quincy Car and Cardenas entered next. They improved upon the leading time with a tighter turn to the final oxer to take the lead in 39.374 with all of the rails up. “I did the inside turn after Fence 3 and then I thought Melissa was very fast,” said Cardenas. “I didn’t see where I could leave out any strides so I just tried to be as fast as I could to the last jump.” The final difference between first and second place would be .357 seconds. Abrahamson and Charline 28 were the final pair to jump-off. They put in the third double-clear effort in 40.365 for third place.

But how much do you know about the balance between 16 Horse Capital Digest • January 27, 2017
nutrition and your horse’s hoof health? “Hoof quality is determined by several factors including genetics, environment, and nutrition,” said equine nutritionist Karen Davison, Ph.D. “Some horses inherit weak hooves, and that can’t be changed. But proper care and nutrition can help a horse develop and maintain the best hooves genetically possible.” The reverse is true too: improper care and inadequate or unbalanced nutrition can lead to hoof problems in a horse with the genes for great hooves.
ELEMENTS OF NUTRITION Several nutrients can influence hoof growth and quality. A well-balanced diet will contain the nutritional elements needed for optimal hoof growth, but each horse is unique and different life stages, performance levels and lifestyles can affect hoof quality. Here are some key nutrients and
their impacts on hoof health. • Protein: The hoof structure is primarily made of keratin, a protein. Proteins are made of amino acids and are necessary for healthy hooves and growth. Methionine, an essential amino acid, is thought to be important for hoof quality. However, balance is key; if fed in excess, methionine is also believed to cause a depletion of iron, copper and zinc. This can lead to crumbling horn and white line disease. • Fat: A diet with adequate levels of fat can be beneficial to the hoof. Fats create a permeability barrier helping to prevent bacteria and fungi from entering the hoof horn. • Zinc: Zinc is necessary for normal keratinization of the hoof. A study by Harrington, Walsh and White in 1973 showed horses with insufficient hoof horn strength had less zinc in the hoof horn than horses with healthy, undamaged horns. • Calcium and phosphorous: Calcium is essential for proper cell attachment in the hoof horn and wall. The right ratio of calcium and phosphorous is required, though, because excess phosphorous can block the absorption of calcium, leading to weak and abnormal bones. • Selenium & Vitamin E: Selenium and vitamin E are important antioxidants protecting cell membranes. However, the balance of intake is crucial because selenium toxicity can cause hair loss, coronitis and coronary band bleeding, as well as sloughing of the hoof and laminitis. Selenium levels in forage and soil vary by region. Talk to your vet or nutritionist about the proper amount of selenium for your horse.
• Biotin: Perhaps the most-researched vitamin for hoof growth, biotin is thought to help with hoof integrity, coat, mane and tail growth. Studies have reported varying effects, but horses with poor hoof quality despite a balanced diet and favorable environment might benefit from a therapeutic dose of biotin. Research indicates a therapeutic dose of biotin to be 15 to 20 milligrams per day. “For the majority of horses, a diet with naturally occurring biotin, a suitable amino acid and fatty acid balance, as well as proper vitamin and mineral fortification will support excellent hoof growth rates and quality,” said Davison. Certified Journeyman Farrier Donnie Perkinson with the American Farriers Association agrees. “The foot reflects everything about the horse, and nutrition is a paramount aspect of the overall health of the horse.”
KEEP LEARNING Every horse is different, and their nutritional and hoof requirements are significantly varied. Keep an open dialogue with your farrier, vet and nutritionist as well as seek opportunities to learn more about how feed affects your horse’s health and wellbeing. The American Farrier’s Association is offering free clinics to AFA members. The clinics will include hoof care-related educational topics for farriers, veterinarians, and horse owners. Ocala:
Tromp Made Avon Great Again H
ITS Ocala is back in full swing as riders and horses gear up for an exciting Winter Circuit ahead. Week 1 at HITS Post Time Farm commenced with two featured classes: the $5,000 Johnson Horse Transportation Open Welcome on Wednesday, Jan. 18, and the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix on Thursday, Jan. 19. Horses and riders descended on Ocala Horse Properties Stadium for the first featured class of the 2017 HITS Ocala Winter Circuit, and everyone was hunting for the win. The team to beat was Mattias Tromp of North Salem, N.Y., and Avon, owned by Swede Ventures in a thrilling race against the clock between the top three contenders. Second-place would end in the hands of Ocala equestrian Aaron Vale riding Elusive, owned by Thinkslikeahorse, and third would go to Kim Farlinger of Orangeville, Ontario, and Charming Force B. Vale was the first to conquer the first-round course set by Mauricio Garcia of Archer, Fla., and advance to the immediate jump-off. He and Elusive laid down a cool, swift round to set the tone for the class, crossing the finish clean in 30.880. After four trips, another went clear to jump-off: Tracy Fenney on MTM Como No. The Flower Mound, Texas, equestrian would be foiled by a rail at the second element of the mid-course combination, ultimately landing them in fifth with a time of 31.856.

Farlinger and Charming Force B followed Fenney and set down another double-clear round. They crossed the timers with all of the rails up in 34.728, not quick enough to catch Vale’s leading time, but good enough for the ultimate third place. The next jump-off round came from Lisa Goldman of Hawthorn Woods, Ill., riding Sovereign, owned by Barbara Disko. The mid-course combination spelled trouble for the pair as they clocked in with four faults in 32.282, for fourth place. The last pair to advance to the jump-off were the victors themselves, Mattias Tromp and Avon, which certainly kept the thrill of the class going until the end. They knew they had to be quick and clear to bring home the blue. They set out with their eyes on the prize, zooming through the course and keeping all of the rails up. They finished in 30.105, just tenths of a second quicker than Vale for the win. Four trips remained in the order but none would advance past the first round, crowning Tromp as the victor.
$25,000 SMARTPAK GRAND PRIX The first $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix of 2017 at the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit featured an exciting nine-horse jump-off for the top prize. The new partnership of Hayley Waters, of Sparr, Fla., riding Chuck and Dana Waters’ Uppie De Lis, took advantage of their place in the order of go to steal the blue ribbon from Tracy Fenney aboard MTM Reve Du Paradis, owned by MTM Farm, by .31 seconds. Lisa Goldman of Hawthorne Woods, Ill., was Prize $ third on her own Hindsight with the only other $1,500 double-clear round. $1,000 “This is my second Grand Prix with [Uppie] $700 and my fourth class on him,” said Waters after her $500 win. “I’ve only had him a month, but I’m always $400 excited to ride him. Thank you SmartPak for $350 $300 sponsoring this class for my first Grand Prix win $250 with [Uppie].” Course designer Mauricio Garcia of Archer, Fla., set a demanding track of 15 jumping efforts for the 25 starters in the first round. hugging the standards to make turns as tight as possible. They galloped through the timers after the final jump, a narrow vertical, to set the Great American time to beat at 38.447. Lisa Goldman and Hindsight opted to move up in the order while Fenney prepared her second mount. Goldman and the powerful gray Hindsight jumped clear in 40.419 to step into the second-place spot. Fenney returned on MTM Como No, but had a rail at Fence 3 for four faults in a time of 40.791, taking the eventual sixth-place prize. Kim Farlinger of Orangeville, Ontario, riding Caprice van de Brouwershoeve, had the final rail down to finish fourth in 40.325. Dorothy Douglas, also of Flower Mound, Texas, riding S & L Elite for MTM Farm, had Fence 10 down for a four-fault score in 40.434 to finish fifth. Up to this point no one except Fenney had jumped clear in less than 40 seconds and she looked like a sure winner with one horse to go. Last but not least was Hayley Waters. She rode brilliantly on the experienced Uppie Du Lis and shaved .31 seconds off of Fenney’s time to take the win by a Rider Prize $ hair. Hayley Waters $7,500 “He [Uppie Du Lis] has been around so it’s nice to Tracy Fenney $5,500 Lisa Goldman $2,350 go in confident on one like him - it feels amazing,” said Kim Farlinger $2,000 Waters of her ride. “I saw Tracy go and she was really Dorothy Douglas $1,500 fast, but I just tried to make up a little time after the Tracy Fenney $1,250 first jump. I was lucky I got to go last so I knew what Hunter Holloway $1,000 I had to do.” Derek Petersen $750 Relegated to second place, Fenney joked, “Those Martien Van Der Hoeven $750 Scott Keach $500 darned kids. They should have let an older person David Jennings $500 win this. Don’t we get a handicap? These kids can Kim Farlinger $500 really go. That’s what they do best!” HCD
Trainer Mike McCormick of MTM Farm, who had three of his horses place in the top six, had this to say about the course: “The jumps are beautiful, just beautiful. It’s the first Grand Prix of the circuit and it’s plenty hard. It’s set at 1.45 to 1.50 meters, but there a lot of choices that have to be made. Early on, there is an option on a bending line where you can leave one out and do four strides or bend it out and do five strides. The time allowed is tight enough to make you think about being quick.” Nine horses were able to complete the first round without a fault to advance to the jump-off including Fenney on two mounts, MTM Reve Du Paradis and MTM Como No. Fenney and MTM Reve Du Paradis were first to return for the jumpoff and attacked the course from the start by angling the first jump and

he first week of the Coachella Desert Circuit came to a close with last Sunday’s grand finale, the $75,000 Back on Track Grand Prix. Spectators gathered in the audience to witness who would master the event. An audience of thousands of viewers across the country also tuned into a live stream via ShowNet, sponsored by Morning Star Sporthorses LLC. Course Designer Martin Otto of Germany set a challenging course for the field of Grand Prix veterans. The order of go was stacked with talent including Will Simpson and Richard Spooner, who won the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix earlier in the week. The team to beat would prove to be John Anderson of Calgary, Alberta aboard Terrific, garnering the glory with the only clear round in the fivehorse jump-off. Anderson and Terrific were first in the order and laid down a trip that would withstand the entire jump-off, powering through the course clocking in at 43.374 with all of the rails up for the victory. Second in the ribbons was Canadian equestrian Tamie Phillips aboard John Anderson and Terrific on their way to a Cat Balou. JHT OPEN WELCOME Martin Otto of Germany set a challenging course to kick off the circuit. Tiffany Sullivan would take home the first blue ribbon of the season aboard Christian Grey, owned by Haley Farms, claiming the win with the only clear first round. First to contest the course was Lisa Carlsen riding her first of two mounts in the class, Parette, owned by WJ Partners. They would finish the course with eight faults in 89.257 for fifth place. Jenni McAllister followed with Legis Venice, but the midcourse combination, an element of the course that would prove trouble for almost every trip, foiled their shot at a jump-off round. They finished with four faults in 83.016 for third-place. The third trip, Michelle Parker and Doriena, owned by Idyllic Imports, tried their hand at the course but, once again, the challenging combination thwarted their shot at the jumpoff. They finished the course with four faults and a time of 85.649 for fourth place. Just as it seemed there might not be a clear round in the class that day, Tiffany Sullivan and Christian Grey entered the ring. They soared through first-round track, clocking in clear to advance to the jump-off. They finished the abbreviated course with a single rail in 41.340. Nobody could match Sullivan’s ride, including secondplace rider Lisa Carlsen who scored the red ribbon with her second mount of the class, World’s Judgment, owned by WJ Partners. HCD

Summarizing
HITS
ond that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner.
The following is a brief summary of Show HITS will host the $200,000 Jumping, the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup and Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup opportunities for community participation.
HITS Post Time Farm | Ocala • Friday, Feb. 17
SHOWJUMPING 101: Jumper classes, like a Nations Cup Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for a jumping error. This is how it breaks down: A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a sec-

Equine Health Entry Requirements P
rotecting the health of your horse and other horses at HITS Ocala Winter Circuit is of the utmost importance to HITS. To that end HITS has implemented required biosecurity measures to decrease the risk of introduction and/or spread of contagious or infectious disease at its shows. Horses must arrive only between the hours of 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Off-hours arrival must obtain permission from show management by calling 352-620-2275 24 hours prior to arrival.
UPON ARRIVAL TO POST TIME FARM, ALL HORSES MUST HAVE:
Signed by the owner/agent/trainer verifying that the horse has been healthy with no sign of infectious disease and has not had a fever above 102°F within 72 hours of arrival. An Event Participation Declaration Form is available in this prize list and at HitsShows.com. A new Event Participation Declaration Form must be filed each time the horse enters the property. Horses stabled off the property that “ship-in” on a regular basis must comply with this requirement as well as additional requirements noted on the following pages. Visit HitsShows.com for further details.
PROOF OF VACCINATION A signed statement from the attending veterinarian that the horse has been vaccinated within six months of each show for equine influenza, EHV1 and EHV4. If a vaccination will expire during one of the shows, the horse must receive its new vaccination prior to being issued a competition number for that show.
PRESENTATION OF HEALTH REQUIREMENTS The Equine Health Requirements are required for all horses entering the show grounds both showing and non-showing. These documents must be filed in the Show Office before any competition numbers will be issued. In addition, random checks for 46 Horse Capital Digest • January 27, 2017

equine health requirements will occur. Be sure to keep a copy of all of your horse’s equine health requirements in an easily accessible spot (in your tack room or tack trunk, truck or trailer) to ensure you can comply with this requirement. The results on all required papers must indicate the horses’ registered (show) name. Any horse not accompanied by these documents will be directed to the show veterinarian to obtain the required documents and/or vaccinations, and/or will be placed in quarantined stabling until the proper documents are obtained. Any horse showing signs of fever/illness/stress is subject to examination by HITS officials and/or the Show Veterinarian, who may, at their sole discretion, place the horse in quarantined stabling or take further action if deemed necessary.
