FROM THE PRESIDENT

Stu & Jackie Jones

A

s we move into the fall of 2021, the continued allure of recreational boating as one of the few “escapism sports” seems to have a firm grip on North Americans, as many continue to jump on the mass exodus band-wagon, and head for the Sunshine State. Some with their boats in tow, others with a fist full of dollars and a three point credit line, ready to buy that dream boat and enjoy the Florida powerboating lifestyle. While the reasons and motivations may vary between various individuals, there is clearly a measurable increase in the demand for the Florida boating lifestyle, as waterfront real estate prices soar, and boat manufacturers rack up orders pushing delivery dates to over two years or more in some cases. Adding to the complications for new boat deliveries is a backlog of pandemic-related business slowdowns, shortages of muchneeded computer chips from China that control these highlyadvance power plants, skyrocketing prices for resins and hull fabrication materials…and the list goes on. So the question is, should any of this add high levels of frustration to our lives? The answer is simply NO! First of all, none of us should ever be mad or frustrated about something this is just out of our control. Secondly, everyone who owns a powerboat and has the leisure time to enjoy it should consider themselves very fortunate to be enjoying this lifestyle, whether it’s a Sunday afternoon at the sandbar a weeklong adventure to attend a bucket list poker run, or go island hopping in the Bahamas. Indeed, so many of our peers who we meet in this extended FPC family have worked

4 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE

hard to get where they are at, and they can feel both proud, and fortunate at the same time, to be enjoying these pleasures. At the FPC office it seems that every other day there’s frustrated cancellation from someone whose new boat won’t be ready, or someone who got caught in the middle of a refit and something through a wrench in the deadline. To all of you I share these few thoughts. Stop worrying & cheer up! 1. The FPC staff will find somebody to take over your cancelled hotel room and slip and carry your event fees over to the next poker run. 2. We’ll say to everyone who we know you will be missing! 3. We will pretend to NOT be having any fun in our social media posts! 4. Most importantly, We will be right here waiting for you when your refit project is done or your new boat is delivered and you can jump all over the next FPC poker run event! The 2022 season will be amazing, and we’re NOT going anywhere!! FPC looks forward to seeing everyone at the 29th Key West Poker Run, which could see a record turnout in every way measurable. Let’s be safe out there, control your speed, pay attention to your surroundings, don’t drink and drive, and always wear your life jackets! See you in Key West!

Stu Jones,

FPC President & Founder

CROSSING THE LINE!

WHILE FLORIDA POWERBOAT CLUB HAS ALWAYS BEEN FOCUSED ON KEEPING ITS POKER RUN EVENTS WITHIN THE SUNSHINE STATE, CERTAIN OPPORTUNITIES TO VENTURE ACROSS STATE LINES ARE JUST TOO IRRESISTIBLE TO PASS UP, AND STAGING A POKER RUN FROM THE WHARF IN ORANGE BEACH ALABAMA IS ONE OF THEM! STORY: STU JONES

F

inding the right venue for a great poker run isn’t always easy, and Orange Beach Alabama wouldn’t seem to be a likely target for a powerboat club focused on Florida-based events. But things happen in peculiar ways, and it all began way back in 2004, when FPC organizers decided to bow out of Emerald Coast Poker Run one year due to shifting tides with the co-organizers, and we soon discovered that Orange Beach was a boaters’ paradise. That vivid memory lasted well over a decade, and somewhere around 2017, FPC member Scott Favre suggested to Stu, that his family’s new resort property called The Wharf, located in Orange Beach might be the ideal poker run stage. Those words started the wheels turning and by 2019, FPC launched its 1st Annual Orange Beach Powerboat Week, with strong backing from Scott and his father Art Favre, owner of The Wharf. Little did many of the first-timers realize, The Wharf was not just any little family resort. Lodging choices include luxury condo rentals on property, or a brand new, well-managed Springhill Suites hotel, right on the doorstep to a huge floating dock marina. Making it even easier to stay on property and enjoy a one-stop-venue, multiple restaurants, bars,

6 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE

amusement rides, a giant movie theater and shopping boutiques galore, this was a boater’s paradise and the first impressions had many teams asking, “When are we coming back?” Well course the plan was to be back in 2020, but due to the pandemic FPC had to scratch that from the calendar, but May 2021 brought the Orange Beach rendezvous back, with a repeat performance from The Wharf ownership and management team, as the event’s presenting sponsor. What a win-win this was for everyone attending, for so many reasons! Some simple changes to the format created the ideal agenda. Organizers dropped the Wednesday Powerboat parade, and focused on Thursday as the primary arrival day, with the Miss Orange Beach Powerboat Week as the kickoff party. This event on the entertainment agenda, as well as all the captains meetings and evening parties were staged at a private party venue, The Port, which is just steps from the hotels and condos on property. In other words, no driving…anywhere! No driving means one thing to this event organizer, as it does to many others, we can DRINK all night!

Lexi

Candace Perdido Pass, Orange Beach,AL PHOTOGRAPHY: PETE BODEN

Which brings to mind another change in the agenda. By renting The Port as a private venue for all the poker run parties and functions, and by securing sponsors for these activities, FPC was able to offer an open bar format for the entire three nights of parties, with premium brands and something for everyone. No cash, no credit cards, no tabs…just take care of your hard-working bartenders. Yes indeed, this was a party! The Friday morning activities commenced with a captains meeting at the Port, and by 10:30am the 53-boat fleet was rumbling out of the marina and headed along ICW waterways towards the Perdido Pass, gateway to the Gulf of Mexico. While Orange Beach provides miles of protected ICW waters, the Gulf is the only place to truly enjoy the performance of these amazing offshore powerboats. With a helicopter in hot pursuit, these adventurous teams enjoy an eastbound course with about twenty miles offshore, and cross the Florida-Alabama line, before turning in through Pensacola pass and continuing east towards Navarre Beach, home of the landmark Juana’s Pagodas.

After a great beach rendezvous and fabulous lunch, it was back on the waterways with a westbound trek that would stay on the ICW, and take our teams back into Alabama to one of the area’s most popular waterfront hot spots, Pirates Cove. This rustic beachfront burger bar is a barefoot boater’s paradise, providing ample docking and plenty of soft sandy beaches for a great afternoon party. From there, it was just a short ride back to The Wharf, where a Friday evening cocktail party got the poker runners together to share stories of a fabulous day on the water. Now the beauty of this Orange Beach Powerboat Week is, that for Saturday agenda, it was a simple hit of the REPEAT PLAY button! The only difference was, it was a westbound course, which cut through ICW waters to Mobile Bay and out to the Gulf of Mexico, then trekked back along the scenic beaches, returning to the Perdido Pass, and multiple choices for waterfront lunch in a town that knows how to have fun. Based on feedback from participants and sponsor, in every measurable way, the Orange Beach Poker Run, presented by The Wharf was a big hit with everyone in attendance. And, for the organizers…simple. Simple is good. SJ

Miss POWERBOAT WEEK

Every great poker run begins with a great party, and there’s no mistaking the popularity of a Miss Powerboat Week contest. With The Port at the Wharf as our private venue to host this exciting and festive occasion, organizers crown a new Miss Powerboat week every year. In addition to competing Thursday night, many of the contestants are actually recruited to hang out and have some fun with the poker runners throughout the weekend, riding on the boats, posing for fun photos, being hostesses at our functions, and of course dealing the poker cards at the Saturday night party! Special thanks to our 2019 Miss Powerboat Week Winner Amber Contant, who is now the contest organizer and our lead recruiter for the most amazing crew of ladies ever! Special thanks to Thursday night party sponsor Paul Bertucci from Team Beer Money, along with Chad Havens who sponsored the cast winnings for the finalists! Judges made donations to our charity FEEDING THE GULFCOAST, for that coveted judging seat, and we congratulate all the winners! What a great way to start the weekend fun!

The fun continued Saturday after the westbound run with numerous lunch stop options for all the crews. A vast selection of popular waterfront dining spots like Tacky Jacks, The Cobalt, and Playa at Sportsman Marina are just a few of the many choices. Poker Run sponsors and friends of the Favre family enjoyed a BBQ lunch at the home of Art Favre, host by son Scott Favre who attended the poker run with his MTI. This beautiful nautical themed home is conveniently located just inside the Perdido Pass, which made it the ideal first poker card checkpoint on the Friday run a day earlier. Along with the amazing ultramodern architecture of this magnificent home, its waterfront takes boathouses to a whole new level, with a fully covered boat slip that accommodates Work of Art, a 92’ tournament fishing Viking sportfish. Special thanks to the Favre family for their tremendous hospitality.

EAST BOUND & DOWN

FPC MEMBERS CELEBRATED 30 YEARS OF EXPLORING THE BAHAMAS IN JUNE BY NAVIGATING EASTBOUND FROM MIAMI, STOPPING IN BIMINI FOR A TWO-DAY FLING, THEN CONTINUING EAST TO CHUB CAY, BEFORE TAKING THE FINAL SOUTHEAST HEADING INTO NASSAU HARBOUR, FOR A GREAT ESCAPE TO PARADISE.

STORY: STU JONES

W

hen it comes to the South Florida boating scene, the majority of boaters would agree that cruising to the islands of the Bahamas is their most coveted adventure. When the summer months roll around and weather changes yield light winds and calm gulfstream conditions, recreational boaters start prepping for the eastbound adventure that provides countless destinations in boaters paradise. For the Florida Powerboat Club, the adventures have spanned thirty years, with the very first Bahamas run staged from Sunny Isles Marina in North Miami to Bimini. Back then in May 1992, it was a mere 12-boat fleet with average length at about 28’ feet, so clearly that part of the equation has changed drastically in comparison this 30th anniversary event with 26 registered teams and an average length of 42 feet. We won’t even try to calculate the insane amount of horsepower for this fleet! What hasn’t changed is the allure of this beautiful 700-island chain, the turquoise waters, pristine beaches and pleasant charming nature of the native Bahamians. The 30th Annual Bahamas Poker Run staged at Haulover Marine Center, with a traditional early 7am departure, a strategy to beat

34 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE

the morning winds and hopefully have a smooth ride across the 54 miles gulfstream crossing from Haulover Inlet. Like anything when it comes to Mother Nature, that’s not an exact science, and in within ten miles of departure, captains were re-calculating their balance between throttle speed and trim, to achieve as smoother ride for the crew and less strain on the boat hardware. Even on the FPC’s 38 Cigarette Top Gun, a boat that is known for its rugged offshore pedigree, it was a more comforting ride for the Jones family at 40 mph, and that seemed to be the common ground for most of the captains, as the fleet slowly separated in to a long caravan of weekend warriors, on their course to Bimini. Arriving in Bimini there are a few landing options for customs and immigration clearance, some chose Bimini Big Game Club, while others went straight to our destination at Bimini Bay Marina, which is the host marina for Resorts World Bimini Hilton. After the usual frustration of the Bahamas clearance process, it was time to enjoy the area waters, as the majority of the pack headed southbound to Honeymoon Harbour, a popular anchorage that is home to an extended family of friendly stingrays and docile nurse sharks

PHOTOGRAPHY: JERRY WYSZATYCKI, STU JONES It doesn’t hurt to bring along a few pounds of squid if you want to have that close-encounter with Mother Nature’s sea creatures, and on this occasion everyone got a chance to enjoy this great experience! Saturday was equally exciting with a visit to the landmark Sapona shipwreck for snorkeling, while the most adventurous and certainly more agile voyagers climbed the jagged concrete and rustic rebar hull, for the privilege of jumping from the ships forward deck. It was content overload as these once-in-a-lifetime photos soon made their way onto dozens of IG and Facebook pages around the nation! Saturday evening the teams joined the Jones family at a poolside suite to play out their poker cards, and at the very least rinse off the salt water in the pool, after a sun-drenched day of boating fun, Bimini-style. While just a few teams returned to Florida after the Bimini weekend, as planned the remaining fleet, about twenty boats in all, headed further eastbound across the Bahama Bank, first visiting Chub Cay for lunch and a quick squirt of fuel, then proceeding on a

southeast heading for the last forty-mile leg to Nassau-Paradise Island. The destination choices were Atlantis Resort & Marina on Paradise Island, and the all-new Margaritaville Resort on Nassau, neared the cruise-ship terminal and steps the popular Nassau straw market. Sadly, with the forces of the pandemic and the Bahamas Government’s accelerated anti-covid policies, the entire Straw Market and many of the downtown retail shops remained closed for our visit. Not that this created any issues for our weekend warriors, as many were content to relax around the pool and take in some of the area attractions and dining options. A good number of poker run teams did manage to enjoy an exquisite dining experience at Nassau’s oldest and most highly acclaimed Graycliff Hotel, known for its extensive wine collection, hand-rolled cigars, and in-house Chocolatier! Yes, they have their own chocolate and cigars. It really is, BETTER in the BAHAMAS! Special thanks to all of our teams and sponsors for joining us on this memorable 30th Anniversary Bahamas adventure, the longest running annual event on FPC’s event calendar! SJ

NOR-TECH 30TH ANNIVERSARY FUN RUN

Trond Schou and Nils Johnsen STORY: STU JONES | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF NOR-TECH POWERBOATS

T

here are few performance marine manufacturers in our industry today that can celebrate thirty years in business, and Nor-Tech’s 30TH Anniversary Celebration gave company owners, employees, industry colleagues and loyal Nor-Tech owners a lot to be thankful for. Organized to coincide with its annual dealer meeting which is staged annually at the Weston Cape Coral Resort & Marina, this luxurious venue combined with the mild Spring weather provided a great outcome. The festivities began Friday afternoon, and the Miami Vice theme clearly was not lost on many guests, who arrived in colorful bag pants and Sonny Crocket sport jackets to get their guest photo at the red carpet entrance to the lavishly decorated ballroom. With nearly 500 guests in attendance, an extensive charity auction agenda, live band and a comical, heartfelt speech from company co-founder Trond Schou, it was a festive evening that left everyone feeling proud of their connection with this exciting brand, and the people behind it. Saturday morning, with beautiful weather to start the day, a fleet of forty powerboat crews fired up their multi-engine colorful

46 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE

Nor-Techs, the majority of them 340 and 390 Sport models, along with a handful of signature models that stood out in the pack. A matching pair of blue 36’ and 46’ Flyers, along with the impressive new 500 Sport center console powered by five Mercury Racing 450’s, punctuated the fact that Nor-Tech Hi Performance has always been willing to step outside the box with stylish, yet functional new designs. Seeing this magnificent fleet head off together was an impressive sight, weather you were dockside, riding onboard, or flying in hot pursuit with the FPC photo and video chopper above. This was a fabulous day of scenic boating that included a casual lunch at Useppa Island Club, where participants, industry colleagues, Nor-Tech owners and of course the factory team, got a chance to celebrate this 30 year milestone, something the founders Trond Schou and Nils Johnsen, can be very proud of! iding on the success of its 1st Annual Midnight Express Bimini Rendezvous in 2019, followed by a cancellation of the 2020 planned event due to the pandemic, it was long overdue for the owners of the Miami-based builder to get another customer-appreciation event on the calendar. With continuing challenges faced with visiting Bahamas, Hawks Cay Resort & Marina seemed like the perfect fit, and on Friday April 30th, over twenty Midnight express owners gathered for the departure from Haulover Marine Center. At first glance it was apparent that that at least three new 43 Solstice models were going to be the showstoppers for the weekend, a credit to the Midnight Express team that worked feverishly to get these new models delivered to their loyal owners. With over 120 attendees on hand, primarily local Florida residents, the group enjoyed fantastic Spring weather as they headed south through Biscayne Bay, making the traditional stopover at Gilberts, Key Largo for a casual lunch with a rustic, relaxing vibe. It was just another forty miles on the protected Florida Bay waters until their destination at Hawks Cay Resort, located on Duck Key, just north of Marathon. Social activities kept guests on property for Friday evening, which was followed by a Saturday raftup party at While Marlin Beach, a popular sand bar located at ten miles from Duck Key on the protected bayside waters. Evening activities followed, with a nicely presented dinner party at the Oasis Cay Ballroom, where attendees enjoyed one of the additional privileges of owning a Midnight Express, a VIP experience from the Glaser family, and all the employees at Midnight Express. PIRATE PARTY WEEKEND / 25 YRS OF MUTINY

T

o celebrate its 25th Anniversary, Plantation Boat Mart pulled all the stops with a fourday event that had something for everyone. The Tavernier boat dealer and FPC Series Sponsor raised the bar by bringing a well-organized fishing tournament and poker run together for a weekend of fun, all based out of its marina complex in the heart of the Florida Keys. Strategically, each event was sponsored by manufacturers represented at PBM, including Invincible which sponsored the fishing tournament, Deep Impact was the natural sponsor for the poker run, and Sea Hunt sponsored the Sunday raftup party at the Whale Harbor channel in Islamorada. But the real buzz, was the event’s theme, a Pirate Party weekend with a full-on pirate costume party Friday evening, to kick off the festivities, with famed DJ Lazz spinning the tunes, and awards given out for best costume and sexiest pirate! Plantation Boat Mart’s staff were fully engaged in all aspects of the weekend events, including an Saturday early 7am Shotgun Start for the anglers, followed by a 10:15am start for the poker run, which took a diverse fleet of performance boats to checkpoints throughout the Upper Keys. Both events had high stakes outcomes, with $ 50,000 in cash and prizes awarded to all the winners, while organizers still managed to include a charityfocus in their agenda, rising over $ 12,000 for the Miami Pediatrics Oncology Fund. This event proved above all, that Plantation Boat Mart owner Dennis Delatorre and his entire team, are not only professionals in the recreational boating industry, they are great ambassadors for the Florida boating lifestyle. Congratulations of a very successful event! SJ

CIGARETTE RENDEZVOUS

STORY: STU JONES | PHOTOGRAPHY: ROB RICH

W

hat started out over five years ago as another fun event on its summer boating agenda for Performance Boat Center, the annual Cigarette Rendezvous has now reached epic proportions, with a record 111 registered Cigarette teams on this mid-June event. Just a year earlier, at the height of the Covid pandemic, the PBC team actually broke the 100-mark, with 104 entries, and it’s understandable why. With a perfect home venue at PBC’s Red Head Yacht Club in Lake of the Ozarks, a good base of local Cigarette owners on the lake during summer months, and an easy 8-hour haul from popular boating hotbeds like Chicago to the North, or Dallas to the south, it’s got all the makings of a great summer blockbuster weekend. Combine that with the fact that PBC, the nation’s largest Cigarette dealer, plans exciting weekend agenda that takes boaters on Friday to popular waterfront spots on a Lake that is known for its focus on fun. The Friday agenda includes visits to entertainment hotspots like Coconuts Caribbean Beach Bar ( giant pool- huge dock) and Backwater Jacks, followed by a Saturday run to Big Dicks Halfway Inn, where you can Shoot-the-Minnow. (#checkedthatbox:) With the momentum of this Cigarette Rendezvous going forward, it’s fair to predict PBC will have their hands full in June 2022! Performance Boat Center’s leadership with co-founders Mark Waddington and Brett Manire at the helm, continues to focus tremendous attention on creating fun boating weekends for their customers, not only at their homeport of Osage Beach in Lake of the Ozarks, but also abroad, by sponsoring and attending many poker runs and racing events around the country. FPC thanks the PBC Team for their ongoing commitment to promoting the performance boating lifestyle, and their continued support of the Florida Powerboat Club. SJ

2ND ANNUAL ROCKIN' THE HARBOR POKER RUN STORY: STU JONES

nyone visiting Baltimore’s Inner Harbor would agree that is one of most vibrant waterfronts along America’s eastern seaboard, with historic ships, great tourist attractions, multiple dining options, entertainment, luxurious hotels and giant marinas with transient docking. Those are the core ingredients for a great poker run venue, and Rockin’ The Harbor organizers staged an amazing late June event, after bowing out in 2020 due to statemandated covid restrictions. The 2021 event returned to its first class lodging headquarters at the Four Seasons Baltimore and Marriott Waterfront, both just steps away from the Harbor East Marina, which offered floating docks and easy reservation process through an online booking portal. The event registration details were well presented on www.rockintheharbor.com, and the roster soon filled up quickly to their limit of 75 teams, many from the local Chesapeake Bay area, and a handful of weekend warriors that trailered several hundred miles to attend.

58 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE

Friday activities got the party started at W.O.T, with a dockside party and bikini contest, drawing a stellar cast of local ladies with a backdrop of high-performance hardware. For the Saturday main event, poker run teams enjoyed a dockside breakfast, brief mandatory captains meeting, then headed out for a 125 roundtrip run, dealing the first card at Inner Harbor, then Annapolis Harbor, Kent Island , Tolchester Marina, with the final card #5 at the new Tiki Lee’s Dock Bar in Back River Maryland. With the poker run event culminating at the last checkpoint, this kept everything on a casual basis for attendees and organizers alike, giving everyone the chance to let the day just play itself out. Congratulations to FPC member and event co-organizer David Landman, Jim Jernigan and all the team for what was reported by many as a fabulous poker run weekend! SJ

T

he summer fun-filled weekend had something for everyone, whether you’re a boat racer, poker runner, air show enthusiast, bikini girl expert or just someone who likes being around a lot of fun people and a constant stream of eye-candy, this event delivered 110%. Created and hosted by FPC Member David Carey, owner of Tiki Lee’s Dock Bar in Sparrows Point MD just east of Baltimore, this entertainment-packed weekend kicked off a Thursday night dockside Boat Display event, followed by a Friday poker run. The 110 –mile poker run included a five-checkpoint course that navigated the north fork of Chesapeake Bay, with stops at Tolchester Marina and Chesapeake City, before the 100+ boat fleet rafted up for lunch at Carey’s Port Deposit restaurant, Lee’s Landing Dock Bar. A fifth card was picked up at Pooles Island, followed by a

huge party with poker hands played out on the Shootout Deck under the massive event tents at the Tiki Lee’s well planned venue. A 20-contestant Bikini contest with an $8000 prize purse and live bands kept well over a thousand guests entertained…and the best part is, that was there were still two full days of Shootouts, air shows and live entertainment on the agenda. It was an impressive feat for Carey and his event team to pull off such a successful event for their very first run, but everyone who attended would agree that was first-class fun and a must-do if you can get yourself to East Maryland in early July. Thanks to David for rolling out a warm welcome mat to Stu & Jackie Jones and all the FPC members in attendance. SJ

SUNCOAST SUMMER FEST

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY: LUCY V. NICANDRI-SUNCOAST CHARITIES FOR CHILDREN On July 3, 2021 the “Suncoast Summer Fest” Boat Fun Run, CoChaired by Simon Williams and Dee Babcock, was a great success raising $30,000.00 for Suncoast Charities for Children. Partly cloudy skies and a nice warm breeze off the Gulf of Mexico greeted 32 preregistered participants stopping at 5 waterfront locations along the Intracoastal Waterway. Stops included Marina Jack, The Old Salty Dog City Island, Caddy’s Bradenton, Bridge Tender Inn, and a private yacht anchored just off beautiful Longboat Key. In 2020 the Fun Run attracted 120 boats and raised a total of $50,000 for the charity. However, a fleet of that size made it difficult to find adequate dockage. In order to enhance the quality of the run, the Fun Run Committee agreed to limit the number of boats participating. Williams stated, “Last year was our first time and it worked out really well, but we didn’t have much time to plan. Most places around here – make that all of them – can’t handle a fleet or group of that size. So we decided to make it a more upscale event that we can produce annually. This year’s Fun Run proved just that offering an all-inclusive VIP Captain and Passenger Package to entice boaters to spend their entire July 4 weekend in Sarasota. On Friday the weekend kicked off with a casual lunch cruise to a newly opened waterfront restaurant, The Point. That evening a VIP Welcome reception for participants and sponsors was held at The Westin Sarasota, then on Saturday a post-run dinner was held at Embassy Suites. During the post-run dinner guests enjoyed live music, great food, full cash bar, and a chance to sit at the dealer’s table and draw their cards to win cash prizes. This year’s winners were as follows: First Place - $1,000 (Joe Harris), Second Place - $500 (Catherine Clapperton), and Third Place - $250 (Tracy Faggione). The Fun Run once again proved that anyone can be winner with a $100 Columbia Restaurant gift card awarded for the worst hand won by Mike Holderness Sr.

62 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE

In addition to the Boat Fun Run, this week long Festival featured events for powerboat fans, motorcycle enthusiasts, and the entire family all benefitting a great cause generating a combined net total of $147,500.00 for Suncoast Charities for Children. The net proceeds are distributed by Suncoast Charities for Children to six area non-profits that provide programs and services to children, teens, and adults with special needs. Lucy Nicandri, Festival Director and Executive Director of Suncoast Charities for Children stated, “Success like this on the fundraising side, coupled with the economic impact generated, are a win-win for Suncoast Charities for Children and our local business economy. The money raised will allow us to provide a significant grant to the Suncoast Foundation to do some necessary capital improvements at several of the non-profit agencies we support. It will also enable us to fund specific projects within these agencies directly related to programs and services. So many children, teens, and adults with special needs are on a waiting list. Good news like this will have such a significant impact on their lives and their future.” Presenting Sponsors included Shore Thing Storage, World Cat, and Sara Bay Marina. Additional sponsors including Suncoast Powerboats & Yacht Brokerage, Erickson Marine, FCCI Insurance Group, Marina Jack Yacht Basin, Suncoast Exotics, Budweiser,

Black Jack Air, Gagels Auto Parts, and Glueck’s Auto Parts 2. Billy Glueck, owner of Glueck’s Auto Parts 2 and longtime local offshore racer of team Twisted Metal, has been a longtime supporter and event participant of Suncoast Charities for Children explaining, “I have expended a lot of effort throughout the years on many different things, and most of them don’t mean that much to me anymore.” He continued, “Putting effort toward things that matter like Suncoast Charities for Children means a lot to me and actually makes me feel good.” Matt Trulio with Speed On The Water also joined forces to help the charity as a Major Media Sponsor for the event. The 2022 “Suncoast Summer Fest” Boat Fun Run is scheduled for Sunday, June 26, featuring a full weekend of events starting on Friday. Simon Williams and Dee Babcock will continue to serve as Co-Chairs of the Fun Run and to get things started for next year’s event both Simon Williams (Shore Thing Storage) and Scott Ryerson (Suncoast Powerboats & Yacht Brokerage) have already agreed to be Presenting Sponsors. Pre-registration is now open so boaters are encouraged to register early online at suncoastsummerfest.org (Click On The Events Tab). Lucy V. Nicandri, Executive Director

rapping up our feature coverage of eight big events on the Summer Fun 2021 series, Concept Boats blew it out of the park for their owners, organizing a three day Key West Poker Run in mid-July, which attracted at least forty Concept owners and their spirited teams. This is an annual event for Concept, which has been a family-owned Miami-based builder for over three decades. Luis Avila keeps his daughter and son Eric on their toes, managing many aspects for this bustling enterprise, and if you ask any Concept owners, they would agree that the Avila family have excelled with their focus on fun events for their owners. The summer fling started from the Caribbean Club boat ramp in Key Largo, this was a suitable rendezvous location because many Concept owners prefer to trailer their boats down to the

Keys, then do the 100+ mile run through the scenic waters all the way to Key West. Stopping points included White Marlin beach to anchor in the soft sand, followed by a picnic style lunch rendezvous later in the day near Snipe Key. Arriving in Key West, boats settled in at the Key West Bight City Marina, with a variety of hotel options for the participants. One of the highlights of the weekend was an amazing raftup party at scenic Boca Grande, just ten miles beyond Key West in the Mule Keys. Congratulations to the Avila family for hosting such a well-organized weekend of boating fun to Concept owners, and for extending the invitation to have the FPC photo and video crew ride along. A SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER MORE THAN TWO DECADES OF HOT STEAMY WEEKENDS AND OVERCROWDED WATERWAYS FORCED FPC ORGANIZERS TO MOVE THE EMERALD COAST DATES TO LATE SEPTEMBER, PROVING TO BE THE BIGGEST AND BEST DECISION EVER, AS 350 ATTENDEES ENJOYED COOLER TEMPS AND LESS CROWDED WATERWAYS!

STORY: STU JONES

W

ith the growing popularity of recreational boating and a bustling tourism economy in the Destin-Fort Walton Beach region, FPC organizers and attendees had observed alarming levels of congestion on local waterways during the last few years of the Emerald Coast Powerboat Week event. It was a tough decision to make, but pushing the mid-August dates into late September yielded an outcome that exceeded all expectations! The luxurious Emerald Grande resort continued as the official event headquarters and host hotel and very few details of the boating agenda were changed, however there was a big shuffle in many of the event-related venues and marine-related services. The practice of launching boats at Fort Walton Beach’s Marler Park ramp and parking trailers behind the Emerald Coast Convention Center had to be eliminated, as a major RV Show took over the grounds. This may have presented challenges, however Legendary Marina in Destin stepped up their game, taking in more of the poker run teams than ever before, by offering staging, forklift launching, 93-octane fuel, overnight boat parking and a dedicated courtesy shuttle to transport guests to and from the Emerald Grande. Adding to that, an increased use of Destin’s Joe’s Bayou Boat Ramp, located is just minutes from Emerald Grande, this combination of services eased the logistics challenges for incoming boaters, and many expressed thumbs up to the new format.

68 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE

Overnight docking continued at the customary locations, including the Aj’s Sponsor Dock on Destin Harbor and Harborwalk Village on the doorstep to Emerald Grande, and there was still a significant number of slips offered by Brooks Bridge Marine in Fort Walton Beach, which was also a poker card checkpoint for the Saturday run. While organizers opted to leave out the Wednesday night Powerboat Boat parade through Harborwalk Village, the activities got off to an early start Thursday with a casual fun run around the bay waters, giving about two dozen teams a chance to shakedown their boats, and at the very least it was a chance to drop GPS tracks for a handful of checkpoints, making the Saturday poker run navigation a little easier. The run’s destination was Legendary Marina, where staff delivered a helpful dockside greeting, getting boats tied up quickly, so that guests could wander into Lulu’s for our scheduled lunch rendezvous. Thursday evening provided a great new venue at Harry T’s in Harborwalk Village, for the very popular Miss Powerboat Week contest ( see page 70) featuring eight lovely contestants and raising the first $1000 towards the club’s charity objectives, with judges paying $ 100 for that coveted front row seat!

AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY: PETE BODEN | MODEL PHOTOGRAPHY: JIM STEWART By Friday morning, it was all business in the Emerald Grande Ballroom, as FPC staff greeted and checked-in participants a for their goody bags, souvenir tees, boat decals, course maps and that all-important captain’s safety meeting. The morning agenda was followed by an afternoon fun run to the popular Juana’s in Navarre Beach, about twenty five miles west along the protected intracoastal waterways. Special thanks to Stephen & Kelly Marino from Alacomp Insurance, for sponsoring the Juana’s lunch, a tasty taco bar that was enjoyed by all! Friday evening featured the AJ’s Captains Party just a five minute walk along the Harborwalk from Emerald Grande, where the sponsor dock was lit up with gleaming powerboats and colorful LEDs, with new models from Deep Impact, Blackwater, Nor-Tech Hi-Performance, Concept Boats and Midnight Express were well displayed. The top deck at AJ’s was reserved for FPC attendees, and it may well have been the most awesome lineup of food we have ever seen from the AJ’s kitchen staff! Special thanks to their entire team at AJ’s Seafood and Oyster Bar for their continued support of this event! The big event Saturday started right on schedule at 10AM with the first poker card being handed off from the docks at Harborwalk Village, as a constant parade of boats and spirited teams came

make their card exchange, giving FPC cameras some amazing photos and video clips. The 120 course offered five morning checkpoints in the bay area, followed by two more stops in Navarre and Pensacola Beach at the west end of the course. A total of five lunch stop locations served its purpose to split up the 84-boat fleet into smaller, more manageable lunch groups, since there is no single venue along these waterways that could accommodate the entire group. The format worked well, as many crews opted to try something new, and were pleasantly surprised. Special thanks to all the lunch partners, which included AJ’s two locations, Wharf 850 Niceville, Fubar at Brooks Bridge, Juana’s Navarre and Flounders Chowder House in Pensacola Beach. Saturday evening’s dinner awards party was a big hit, as the Emerald Grande Team delivered a lavish outdoor function under event tents, allowing participants to enjoy the cool fall temperatures in an open-air venue. This new party format kept participants from driving off-grounds, allowed the teams play poker cards, watch event videos on the big screen, accept awards, and celebrate a fantastic weekend in paradise with their fellow boating friends! The new September dates for the FPC Emerald Coast Powerboat Week are here to stay! Mark your calendars for September 21-25, 2022! SJ

Miss POWERBOAT WEEK Harry T’s at Harborwalk Village offered a fabulous new home for the entertaining Miss Powerboat Week contest, which featured eight lovely contestants, most of whom were scheduled to spend the entire weekend as FPC girls, helping out at the parties and dealing the poker cards for the Saturday run. Special thanks to Amber Contant from Biloxi Mississippi, who has become quite resourceful as a contest organizer and talent recruiter for FPC! Party guests were invited to make donations to have the opportunity to sit at the judging table, which got the event’s fund-raising activities off to a great start, raising the first thousand dollars towards the $ 15,000 goal! A former finalist, Miss Shelbie, took the top honors winning the 2021 event, and finally getting to wear the Miss Powerboat Week crown. In a very close judging final, the close contenders were Jazzmyn and Laken, taking 1st and 2nd Runner up titles. All three of the winners stayed with us for the weekend, assisting at parties, handing poker cards off at the checkpoints and taking part in the Saturday night festivities. Look for all three in the upcoming Florida Powerboat Club’s 2022 wall calendar! Special thanks to the team at Harry T’s in Harborwalk Village for securing a private party venue for the function, and we will certainly lock in this venue for years to come!

Saturday Night Party FPC organizers were somewhat reluctant at first to agree to an outdoor tented Saturday night bash, but the Emerald Grande sales and catering team ask for a leap of faith., saying “Trust us Stu, it’s so much nicer in the fall, we do outdoor weddings all the time, the poker runners will love it.” Those convincing words resulted in a fantastic outcome, as the cool September temperatures dipped to low 70’s for the evening function, with no humidity and not a drop of rain within miles. FPC guests were treated to a wonderful buffet-with-server dinner spread, and a nicely laid out venue with wedding-style décor, plenty of bar locations, big screen videos, and a large poker table area where six lovely FPC Girls playing out the poker hands for over 80 teams. Emerald Coast is the one event that determines nine finalists from the high-hands that go to the final table and a 10th is a live auction buy-in, which was made by Mark Fischer with a $ 2000 donation to the charity. Special thanks to our new final table dealer Phil Benneyworth from Fear The River Poker League, our new event sponsor. The round came down to face-off between Eileen Fischer and Pam Anderson, with Pam taking 1st place. Congratulations to Pam and husband Roger Anderson for their first big win, which included sponsor gifts a grand prize of $ 10,000.

1st Place-Roger & Pam Anderson-Team WILD HORSES

With event related fund-raising efforts generating $ 7,500, FPC has added $ 5000 to that, bringing the total charitable donations to $ 12,500, which is shared by four charities: Alaqua, Fisher House, Destin Kids on the Coast, and Emerald Coast Science Center.

2nd Place-Mark & Eileen Fischer-Team DEEP IMPACT

3rd Place-Stephen Dummer-Team LOOSE CANNON
