y the time the ink dries on this issue of Powerboating in Paradise Magazine we will be walking the aisles of the Miami International Boat Show and hanging out in Miami Beach’s Art Deco district, celebrating the warm weather, festive atmosphere, and the prospect of getting back out on the water again soon! The Miami Boat Show is magical in so many ways, and by all historic accounts, it is quite possibly one of the longest running boat shows in the country! But sadly, it’s almost a guessing game when trying to give the show an “XXth Annual title.” It seems that current organizers may have lost the desire to label this world famous boat show with it’s true birthday, perhaps because it doesn’t change the outcome of the show and more likely it makes the show’s official name just too damn long. Hard to roll off the tongue…”The 80TH Annual Miami International Boat Show” and certainly a hard one to hashtag or keep typing in every press release or ticket purchasing website. But the fact remains, this show…The Miami International Boat Show is iconic on so many fronts. More importantly, this show is held in Miami, that colorful city that remains as the undisputed performance boating capital of the world. And it is here, at the 2024 Edition of this epic boat show event that we will see the most incredible collection of high-performance hardware that we have seen in many years! So let’s not give up on the birthday credits because it’s a PRETTY BIG DEAL! I’m certain it’s the 80th Annual Miami International Boat Show, and after working at this show every year since February of 1991, this will make it my 34th consecutive year! So, if you do the math, I guess I’ve worked almost HALF of all the Miami Boat
6 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE
Shows that ever existed! But is it really work? I mean, it’s a major event that celebrates the boating lifestyle and brings everyone together that shares that passion! And it is truly powerful in the way that it transforms successful, grown men into confused adolescents- as they stand there pondering trips vs quads? Forward facing second row or a rear facing lounge? 18” Garmins or those 22-inchers like the cool kids have? Geez, it’s so much fun to be in this boating world. It just never gets old! The Florida Powerboat Club proudly returns to the 80th Miami International Boat Show offering full support to our members, marine trade sponsors, advertisers and media partners in every way possible. We are proud to be teamed up again with our friends at Speedonthewater.com to host our invitational Miami Boat Show Bash at the Sagamore Hotel, and excited to be staging our 29th Annual Miami Boat Show Poker Run to the Florida Keys just a few days after the completion of the Miami Show. It’s just amazing to be immersed in this extended family of performance marine industry professionals, and to be surrounded by passionate folks who know how to have fun! We look forward to a successful and safe 2024 poker run season and we can’t wait to share the next Powerboating in Paradise adventure with members of the Florida Powerboat Club!

The 31 st Key West Poker Run Presented by Mercury Racing
Story by Stu Jones
F
or the 31st year in a row, the FPC Key West Poker Run represented all that a signature poker run should embody, and then some. After all, with a roster of over two hundred & seventy teams from eight nations, a star-studded cast of the leading industry players as the supporting sponsors, a 400- mile roundtrip course through scenic Florida Keys waters, and a soldout destination that simultaneously hosted the RWO powerboat racing championships….there really wasn’t anything left off the agenda! But there was one thing that separated this year from all others, and that was the significance that the presenting sponsor, Mercury Racing, used this Key West event as its final birthday bash, celebrating 50 Years of Wide Open. Indeed, 2023 had been an historic year for the Fond du Lac Wisconsinbased manufacturer, which had spent most of the calendar year introducing a series of revolutionary new outboard models. Commencing with the new 400R-V10 which was unveiled at the Miami International Boat Show in February, the Mercury Racing team followed that with an epic splash in Charleston SC four months later in June, where the new supercharged 500R-V8 took center stage, and a fleet of 500R-equipped demo models from the likes of Nor-Tech, Cigarette, Fountain, MTI and Midnight Express, illustrated that the bar had been raised once more, as unsuspecting passengers were reminded to hold-the-handrail firmly while professional drivers pushed the throttles forward!
8 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE
Fast forward to November, just one week after the completion of the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, dozens of Key West Poker Run teams began to gather at popular South Florida marinas, including HarbourTowne, Haulover Marine Center, TNT Marine Center and Grove Harbour for what might become the most epic powerboating adventure of a lifetime for so many. Often labelled the Superbowl of poker runs, the Miami to Key West event returned to a three-day departure agenda, allowing participants to select their most suitable itinerary. For offshore race enthusiasts, this meant arriving early enough to be in Key West to witness the first of the three RWO offshore racing events, which have adopted a Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday agenda for many years. Alternatively, participants with limited time would typically opt for the Thursday run, followed by a Sunday departure, so that they could enjoy the key highlights of the poker run, catch the Friday races and Saturday poker run events, then get back to Miami by Sunday afternoon and carry on with their busy lifestyles. No matter which format was selected by FPC participants, the Key West Poker Run has been and will always be designed to offer something for everyone, with mixed agendas, a variety of boat-speed classes, a robust menu of lodging and docking options, plus a poker run headquarter venue with daily entertainment and plenty of eye candy to enjoy Thursday through Sunday. Most importantly, FPC organizers have always exhibited a very open-door policy
Photos by: Jerry Wyszatycki & Jeff Helmkamp to any first-time attendees from faraway places and diverse backgrounds, many of whom had set their sights on attending this signature event several years earlier, calling it their “Bucket list” poker run. One of the most popular questions that is asked by so many people, has been, “How does FPC manage to move so many boats safely over such a long poker run course, and where do they all go in Key West?” These questions are the very premise by which FPC management operates the event with safety as a top priority, and the key has always been to spread the boats out over the course, using multiple departure days, a variety of staging marinas, staggered starts each day to allow the faster boats to become the front-runners while the slower boats follow. Additionally, the continued use of multiple lunch venues for the Thursday run helped to manage the over-crowded stops on the Thursday Run. While the Tuesday and Wednesday groups shared the popular Gilberts Resort for the lunch stop before continuing to Key West, the Thursday run was enhanced with a manufacturerdriven lunch format. While Gilberts continued as the anchor stopover point, Sundowners in Key Largo once-again hosted the Nor-Tech Hi Performance Boats owners’ lunch, along with Playa Largo Resort, where Cigarette owners enjoyed a factory-sponsored lunch affair. New to the program was a Statement owners lunch program, which was hosted by Lighthouse Grill at Faro Blanco Resort in Marathon. Adding Island Grille, which is located on Snake Creek beside the SD Marine group fuel stop, completed the lunch program with a
total of five locations, managing 150 boats that were registered for the Thursday run. The November weather was remarkably mild and dry, offering ideal boating conditions for the weeklong event. While the majority of the 170-mile course from Miami to Key West takes place on protected bay and intracoastal waterways, there is always the final 50-mile offshore leg from Marathon to Key West that concerns some of the less experienced participants, and those with smaller craft. It appears that in recent years, many teams have opted to trust their Garmin chartplotters and navigate the longer but more protected backwaters through the Saddlebunch Keys, into the Gulf of Mexico along the northern side of the Lower Keys. Unfortunately, some participants discovered too late that the science of weather and wind direction needs to be factored into this decision, as prominent winds with changing direction can affect wave heights on either side of the Keys. The information necessary to make these decisions with the best outcome, is shared in the Key West Captains Video, produced and shared by FPC organizers prior to the event, and all participants are urged to watch this video in its entirety, so they can make the best of their Key West Poker Run experience. The remaining pages in this Key West 2023 feature article highlight the spirited teams that participated in this signature poker run event, and FPC organizers thanks participants, sponsors, and service providers for their continued support of this epic adventure that happens every fall season.

TUESDAY departure Offering a choice of three departure days for the Key West Poker Run has proven to be the ideal way to allow participants to customize their poker run agenda. Teams have various departure times assigned, depending on the location of the marina where they are staging or overnighting. Due to the typical weather conditions for November, which can often include gusty winds and rough coastal seas, FPC organizers always suggest that participants plan ahead with enough time to safely overnight in Miami, to be ready for the morning start. These overnight locations including North Miami Beach for boats staging out of TNT Marine Center or Haulover Marine Center, and further to the south Venetian Marina in downtown Miami and Grove Harbour Marina in Coconut Grove offered the best combination of transient docking and hotel lodging. As always, FPC staff managed all the details of booking rooms and docking on behalf of participants, and these Miami based locations ensured that no boaters would be forced to take a rough coastal ride in the early morning hours prior to the official start in Biscayne Bay. Suggested departure times were approximately 9:30am for boats in North Miami, followed by a 10:30am start from Biscayne Bay, near the Seaplane Channel that exits from Grove Harbour Marina.
As always, for safety reasons, each of the three speed groups were staggered and all participants were instructed to wait for the FPC chopper to arrive on site before they hit the throttles, so that the photo and video crew could follow the group and capture maximum coverage of the poker run teams. For the Wednesday group, this photo and video agenda was undermined by the presence of a private helicopter, which did a low pass over the group and triggered a premature group start. Unfortunately, the FPC photo and video crew were en route to the location and were unable to capture the poker run group after they hit the throttles southbound. This of course compromised the photo and video objectives and for this reason, FPC organizers will request any members or sponsors with helicopter programs to work around the FPC photo and video agenda and stay clear of the poker run airspace during the initial stages of the start. Organizers will also provide a distinct description of the official chopper, which will include identification decals. Despite these challenges, FPC was able to book extensive helicopter flying time in Key West for the Saturday fun run, giving the photo and video crew a second chance to capture thrilling photo and video content of dozens of participants teams. A
s far back as early 90s, it was apparent to the clubs founder that Gilberts resort in Key Largo might one day be considered as a convenience stopover location for poker run teams transiting from Miami to the Florida Keys. But sadly, in those early days the docks were in a state of disrepair, with broken boards and a long line of near-derelict live aboard sailboats, making the destination unattractive to most powerboaters. That soon changed, when the next Gilberts owner Reinhard Schaupp, a German-national who invested in the resort in the mid 90's, met with Stu Jones and asked "What would it take to get Florida Powerboat Club to visit Gilberts and make this a lunch and fuel destination.?" The answer, Jones says, was simple and brutally succinct, " Get rid of these derelict boats on your rock for good, fix up the dock, add some cleats and fenders, and make it powerboat-friendly. Then, we will come!" The rest is history and for the next twenty-five years, FPC poker runs have turned Gilberts Resort into a landmark destination and a
34 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE
must-visit lunch stopover for virtually every FPC poker run passing through Key Largo. Since those days, Reinhardt and his family have moved on, but the current owner Elina Weisberg is on property for most FPC events, mixing with the guests, supporting her friendly staff, and she can often be seen flying her drone over the site to capture the excitement of having dozens of colorful poker run boats rafted up! For the 2023 edition of the Key West Poker Run, the Gilberts Resort team rolled out a warm welcome mat, providing a first-class experience and fabulous food for hundreds of poker run teams during all three departure days. And, as always, this was a busy stopover point on Sunday and Monday, as the poker run teams returned to Miami.

THURSDAY departure Every year the Key West Poker Run event grows by some measurable level, including the number of registered teams, the size of the boats, the number of engines, amount of sheer horsepower and for the 2023 event, the number of overall participants increased by several hundred crew members! This was evident with the massive fleet that congregated for the start of the Thursday run, which is estimated to have exceeded 150 teams! But with the staggered departures and more than five scheduled lunch stop locations for participants to visit between Key Largo and Marathon, the flow of boats was just as manageable as any other year. FPC organizers credit and thank our partnerrestaurants for once again welcoming our poker run teams with fabulous food and warm hospitality!

Thursday Body Paint Party
D
ecades ago, before modern technology, it was often assumed that “What happens in Key West, Stays in Key West!” Not anymore! Thanks to the miracles of social media and camera phones, everyone has now heard about (and seen) the FPC Body Painting Expo, which headlines the Thursday night entertainment agenda at the Key West Poker Run Village. Bodypainting has long been part of the free-spirited culture that prevails in Key West, and this year’s event did not disappoint! Hector Godoy and his wife Meike are local body paint artists in Key West and have always drawn a good pool of talented artists to the event. For 2023 and years past, most spirited women who posed as models were Key West locals, but more recently we have seen the FPC participants and crew members participating. With a wide variety of artwork themes that included poker cards, racing stripes and sparkly floral designs it was a festive evening for participants and visitors alike! Congratulations to the top three winners who shared $ 1,000 in prize money!

taging an epic seven-day poker run event with over 250 registered teams, intricate coordination plus continuous hospitality and function planning, demands substantial resources. Without the sponsorship support of the FPC industry partners, the Key West Poker Run could never have achieved its status as one of the nation’s signature poker run events. That is precisely why organizers every year have dedicated Friday as Sponsor Appreciation Day, which includes time with the FPC photo & video team to interview and hear from these leading marine industry professionals, and the chance to recognize each sponsor team with a formal sponsor award on the Poker Run Village stage.
70 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE
The 2023 Sponsor appreciation party agenda was enhanced further, with Mercury Racing celebrating its 50th Anniversary and using the Key West Poker Run as the final big bash. FPC organizers worked closely with the Mercury Racing marketing team to recruit local rock & roll musicians from the Andy Westcott Band to stage a live performance, and WAIL 99.5 radio personality Bill Hoebee joined in for a live-radio broadcast form the poker run village. As always, the public was invited to join FPC members for the festive party, with no cost for admission, and a backdrop that included more than thirty spectacular powerboats on display both in water and on land.

Saturday Fun Run TO WOMAN KEY
f ter a full day of offshore racing all day Friday that often brings Key West harbor closures, FPC participants are ready to get the boats out and play on Saturday. This has been a three-decade tradition that has taken participants to many local coves and beaches around local Key West waters, but with the sheer size and number of boats now attending, the locations have been narrowed down to just a few. With warm temperatures and sunny skies, the FPC chopper got off to an early start, and by 10AM boats were blasting through Key West Harbor and along the south shore of the island, where the most
suitable waters made for ideal photo and video conditions. The rendezvous location was once again selected to be Woman Key, located less then ten miles west of Key West harbor, making it easy to find for even first-timers with little local knowledge. Although the anchor conditions were not the most ideal due to light winds, FPC teams managed to enjoy the scenic anchorage and the annual rendezvous soon took shape, with more than 150 boats and yachts of all sizes settled in for an afternoon to enjoy this piece of paradise.

aturday evening at the Conch Republic Key West Poker Run Village was the final big bash for the poker run, and 2023 was one for the record books! With the Conch Republic Seafood company closed to the public and reserved exclusively for FPC attendees, the Saturday party boasts the largest attendance during all three days of the poker run village agenda. With the Key West Historic Seaport and sponsor dock on our doorstep, sponsor displays lit up with bright lights, and a busy stage program for the President’s Choice Awards, participants were invited to play out their final poker cards in the new FPC Gaming Tent, and could be seated for dinner as early as 6:30pm. Dozens of presentations were made, covering almost thirty individual categories for the President’s Choice Awards, and by about 10PM the top five poker run winners were awarded with a prize purse that reached nearly $ 40,000 for the 2023 event. Special thanks to the Grand Prize Sponsors SD Marine Group for the ICON Electric golf cart and two ICON EV Bikes, as well as Deep Impact Custom Boats for the $ 10,000 donated to the cash purse for the top three winners. FPC congratulates all the winners and thanks our event partners including Conch Republic Seafood Company for providing an amazing venue for the Key West Poker Run village for over two decades! SJ
