FROM THE PRESIDENT

B

y the time the first wave of our loyal members, sponsors and subscribers get their hands on this issue of Powerboating in Paradise Magazine, FPC will have completed its first 2021 poker run event in January, and will be fully engaged in February’s Miami Boat Show Poker Run to Key Largo. Sitting here at my desk at the FPC headquarters in Pompano Beach, and as I write this Letter From the President early February, I’m not sure I can express the level of excitement and enthusiasm I am feeling these days, as we embark on what appears to be an amazing 2021 ahead! The most obvious reason we can all agree to have a more positive outlook, is the discovery and distribution of effective Covid vaccines over the next several months. Not that this is happening with any ground-breaking speed, but as long as we all agree to be patient while our new government leaders figure out the delivery program, we have some peace-of-mind knowing that our nation (and the world) will pull out of this mess eventually. This however, is not yet the time to celebrate, nor is it the time for any of us to be complacent and drop our guard on responsible social distancing and wearing of masks. While we enjoy the freedoms of our own privacy in our homes and on our very own boats, most of us would admit we also enjoy the camaraderie of the group setting on poker run events, which bring us together dockside, in restaurants and clubs, and in the coming days, at several of our Key Largo venues during the Miami Boat Show Poker Run. From Playa Largo Resort, to Mariners Club and Gilberts Resort where we are staging our Poker Run village, we must all keep the Covid awareness a top priority. At the Gilberts venue in particular, we as organizers have certainly considered all the benefits of having a 100% outdoor format, with the open-air tiki bar, opensided tents, and the boats on display in the “open-air”, we checked off most of the important boxes. That said, the other boxes that still need to be checked, are the responsibility of all of us, including limited-contact, nohandshake, mask-wearing boxes… just the common sense

things that we have all been practicing for almost a year! We are clearly on the home-stretch after twelve miserable months of dealing with these Covid-challenges and we can make it...just a few more, or for as long as it takes. The other reason that I am so excited about the year ahead is that in a strange twist, Covid has actually attracted a whole new wave of participants into recreational boating, and to illustrate this, FPC has seen record numbers on every front! With some help from social media platforms such as Facebook (39,000 followers ) and our YouTube channel (31,000 subscribers) and certainly from wordof-mouth and social media cheerleading from our loyal members, FPC is seeing record numbers of new members and event registration as we kick off the first few events for 2021! We must never forget all the misery, fatalities and suffering that Covid has brought to our nation, and move on with lessons learned. I’m just thankful that so many of you have not lost your passion for this sport, and that we may continue to share this lifestyle with our family and yours. Finally, I am extending my personal invitation to all of our FPC members and industry colleagues, to help celebrate my recent 30-year anniversary of arriving in South Florida Jan 31, 1991 from Canada, to start a new chapter in my life. From the time I arrived and after working the first Miami Boat Show in February 1991, I knew I was destined to turn my passion for powerboating in paradise into some form of lifestyle career. In my wildest dreams, I could never have imagined that it would come this far, and I thank you all for being a part of that pursuit! It is now time to hit the reset button, raise the bar even higher, and start planning for the next amazing 30 years!. Sincerely,

Stu Jones,

AGAINST ALL ODDS! WITH OVER 160 EAGER POKER RUN TEAMS ON DECK IN MIAMI, READY FOR ADVENTURE IN THE FLORIDA KEYS, HURRICANE ETA DECIDED TO LOITER IN THE GULF OF MEXICO JUST OFF THE SHORES OF KEY WEST AND RUN INTERFERENCE ON THE 28TH ANNUAL KEY WEST POKER RUN. BUT AFTER AN 8-MONTH COVIDCURSE THAT STOLE MANY FREEDOMS FROM THESE WEEKEND WARRIORS, NEITHER THE CANCELLATION OF THE WORLD SUPERBOAT CHAMPIONSHIP, NOR THE STORMS OF ETA, WERE GOING TO RAIN OVER THEIR PARADE!

STORY: STU JONES

I

n spite of Mother Nature’s 11th-hour curve ball, the adventure began for the first wave of poker run teams on Wed November 11th, the same day that the National Weather Service updated Hurricane ETA’s path through the Florida Straits and into the Gulf of Mexico west of the Florida Keys. But this was a chapter that had already been written on several occasions in the FPC history books, and organizers already determined that the inside route from Miami to the middle Keys, was safe and navigable. The only consideration that called for a change in the poker run playbook, was the reality that this handful of boating crews would not make the final leg to Key West due to turbulent coastal waters, so FPC set up lodging and safe harbor at Faro Blanco Resort in Marathon. The weather model had given organizers a strong case to determine that the following day, Thursday Nov 12, would provide much better conditions for that last 50-mile trek from Marathon to Key West. The only question remained…would it be on the coastal Atlantic route, or on the weaving back-waters through the Saddlebunch Keys and the Gulf of Mexico, for a northern passage into Key West Harbor? That would call for a Thursday recon mission in the FPC’s mascot, the Project 1080 Cigarette! There were several other changes in the FPC Poker Run playbook, not just weather-related. Covid-19 challenges and the CDC social distancing guidelines had forced FPC to forgo most forms of group functions in restaurants or

6 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE

bars, including the traditional process of offering a poker run check-in and captains meeting in the crowded venue at Duffy’s Sports Grill in North Miami. Instead, outdoor checkin for poker run teams was staged at the two hosting marinas, Haulover Marine Center and Grove Harbour Marina. The captain’s safety meeting program was modified to require only “new” members attend a function at Trump International Resort (masks required), where retired USCG captain Brad Schoenwald reviewed the safety requirements and poker run course logistics. Even beyond the early stages of the event, the changes to the poker run format due to CDC guidelines affected virtually every aspect of the Key West Poker Run’s six-day agenda. With more than 100 registered teams for the Thursday run, translating to over 500 poker run participants, no single lunch venue could support the massive fleet, nor the sheer numbers of the hungry mob due to over-crowding. Therefore, a total of five restaurants were selected to serve the Thursday departure group, including two in Key Largo and three in Marathon. While Gilberts in Key Largo gladly took on the bulk of the poker run guests, with over 200 served, other restaurants like Sundowners Key Largo hosted a Nor-Tech Owners lunch, which was well attended by over 100 guests. If Covid challenges and hurricanes were not enough to stonewall FPC organizers, there were some other hurdles to

PHOTOGRAPHY: JERRY WYSZATYCKI & PETE BODEN

overcome that required 4th quarter game strategies. A recent ownership change at Faro Blanco Resort in Marathon just days before the poker run, brought in a highly regimented management team that immediately banned the use of fuel trucks on property. As a result, the high octane fuels offered by the VP Racing 18-wheeler had to be re-located to a new venue, Captain Hooks Marina at the opposite end of the six-mile long island. It wasn’t an easy adjustment for some of the FPC participants, many of whom would rely on their snail trails in the GPS or visual memory to find the previous fuel stops, so FPC management re-invented the “marathon lunch/fuel map” for the captains kits, giving participants the important info they needed to manage their stopover programs on the 170 mile course. No matter what challenges, most powerboaters have learned that performance boating presents many versions of unwanted circumstances, and on a major event like the Key West Poker Run, there can be many. What most seasoned participants have learned over many years of attending Key West, is that to achieve the maximum enjoyment on this run, there are two common practices that can get every team through the run, no matter what circumstances. The first is to be, well-prepared in order to limit the chance or likelihood of incidents on the course. Whether it's dockside maintenance and levels check, calculating your fuel burn, having the right safety equipment and a good VHF radio on board, making sure your GPS is working properly, these are all bullet-points of this important checklist. Even at time of departure, having a good chat with your crew as you idle out of the harbor and checking in with them during the run for an occasional “thumbs up” illustrating their level of comfort….These are the signature traits of a well-prepared-captain.

No matter how much planning and preparedness, sometimes other forces take over, and the worst case scenario can unfold at the worst possible time. Therefore, the second and highest priority is to remain calm, and be cool! As captain, your escalated level of stress or frustration over a break down or soft grounding or even running into foul weather, can result in bad decisions on your part or crew anxiety. Think clearly, use common sense, practice the skills that got you where you are in life, and above all, remain calm. You are boating in a group setting, where there’s enough other teams to assist you, and a small army of TowBoat US operators from Miami to Key West, who are out there on stand-by waiting to help. It’s their job, and they are pros at it. Compared to the 260 teams registered in 2019, the 28th edition of the FPC Key West Poker Run may have suffered a huge downturn in registration due to the forces of Covid-19 and the fallout from Hurricane Eta. And somehow FPC still managed to secure a roster of 160 registered teams from all over the United States, including a handful of international visitors from Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Even with the overwhelming odds in the early stages of the run, the Eta eventually moved along, and by Friday the weather was beautiful and continued that way for the remaining four days. With light winds, calm seas and clear skies, the stage was set for great photo and video sessions of the amazing fleet, a robust raft-up at Woman Key on Saturday, and a sensational ride back through the scenic Florida Keys on Sunday. But don’t just take our word for it….this entire issue of Powerboating in Paradise is dedicated to our Signature Key West 2020 event, and these amazing images can tell the story far better than my words. Wednesday

departure

With at least 80 percent of the poker run teams that attend the Key West Poker Run residing from somewhere outside the Sunshine State, it is understandable that a tremendous effort and cost goes into planning such a big event! For those participants, FPC created the Wednesday departure group, because as most have said many times over, “Once you trailer your boat this far and go through all the planning to get your crew all the way to Miami, you might as well spend one more day to enjoy it.” And that is exactly how it has been since 1998, when the Key West poker run adopted a multi-day departure program. Of course, the other logical reasoning for the Wednesday departure group is that far too many boats would make the Thursday run extremely challenging with respect to adequate space for lunch stopovers and fueling in the middle to upper Keys. This year’s Wednesday group was on the books at well over 60 teams just days before the event, but with the pending storm track of Hurricane ETA pushing close to Key West and the lower Keys, it was not long before some teams either cancelled or pushed back to the Thursday run. For those who held their ground and took a leap of faith with FPC, it was a great outcome. While the ETA storm track did in fact remain just west of Key West, the protected bay waters remained safe and navigable for all teams. A handful of teams took safe harbor in Marathon for the night, while about a dozen teams took their chances, and set their sites on Key West, some on the Atlantic coastal waters, and some on the longer, but more protected course through the Saddlebunch Keys. While there were many stories of adventure to be later shared, everyone made it to Key West safely!

Lunch stop

at Gilbert's

Rayanne

Gilberts Key Largo provided the ideal stopover location for both the Wednesday and the Thursday poker run groups, as they have for more than two decades. Having a relatively new docking facility which boasts more than 500 feet of linear dock and ten slips along the Jewfish Creek, combined with a multi-slip marina on the opposite side of the resort, makes Gilberts the undisputed champ when it comes to bringing boat groups in for lunch. But you cannot have a great lunch without a fabulous kitchen, well-prepared food and friendly staff, and Gilberts checks off all these boxes with flying colors.

16 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE

With the Wednesday group shrinking in size from over sixty teams to just about 40 boats, Gilberts easily accommodated the entire Wednesday lunch group and everyone enjoyed the casual rustic vibe of this landmark hotspot, located at the gateway to the Florida Keys! Editor’s note Florida Powerboat Club returns to Gilberts Resort

Feb 18-21, 2021 for FPC’s annual Miami Boat Show Poker Run, where Gilberts will host an exciting event-packed 4-day Key Largo Poker Run Village event. Visit the FPC website for more details or see ad on page 2. www.flpowerboat.com

Thursday Run.......

over 100 teams!

The THURSDAY departure of the Key West Poker Run has historically been the largest of the event’s multi-day departure program, and the 2020 edition of this Thursday poker run group certainly dealt an interesting poker hand for its organizers. While it was not so much the sum-total of attendees, nor the number of boats on the course for the trek from Miami to Key West, it was more about meeting the

challenges of Covid-19 as restaurants and service providers strived to maintain Covid social distancing. guidelines. Management teams at each assigned lunch stop on the poker run course had established maximum numbers that could be served, and with 500 guests on the roster, that presented the need for some critical planning.

Thursday Run Key Largo Stop

While Gilberts picked up half the load with their well-oiled venue and hardworking staff, Sundowners Key Largo hosted a Nor-tech owners’ lunch just three miles away. It was the 2nd year in a row for the Nor-tech sponsored lunch, which attracted an eclectic mix of Nor-techs including 3600 Supercat operated by a German member and a 5000 Supercat, plus a wide selection of modern-day center console models, and the showstopper of the fleet, the new 46’ Flyer…which had made its poker run debut just a month earlier in Cape Coral Florida at the Roar Offshore event. Just fifty miles south in Marathon, three other poker run restaurants assisted with the FPC program, including Island Fish Company, Lazydays at Marathon Marina and Burdines, on the Boot Key Channel. There were even a small number of participants who made it to the exclusive Little Palm Island for lunch, where the $ 125pp multi-course lunch proved to be outstanding, along with the experiencealone, of just visiting this highly exclusive resort island.

Friday FunRun TGIF had new meaning for Key West 2020 attendees, because the absence of the Race World Offshore Superboat championship event changed the traditional day of watching the races, to a day of Offshore play. And play they did, because FPC had allocated a tremendous amount of flying time with a local R44 helicopter, with the primary mission of giving manufacturing sponsors and participants, plenty of bonus time for photo and video shoots. With the chopper stationed on the south shoreline of Key West near the airport, the best sea conditions and magnificent colors of the tropical ocean waters made for the perfect backdrop. FPC’s Jerry Wyszatycki handled the still photos, while videographer Joe Kotrady kept the video rolling, from his hand-held 4K camera and new 360 vision gopro mounted on the tail section o of the helicopter. More than a dozen episodes with feature coverage are slated for FPC’s Youtube Channel, commencing mid-February!

Friday night awards

Once again Covid-19 was the reason FPC was forced to dispense with the wildly popular Key West Poker Run Village at the Conch Republic Seafood Company, due to the City of Key West’s hard line on social distancing throughout the city limits. But with the help of our venue partners at the Conch Republic Seafood company, a large 20x80 tent made for a landmark poker run headquarters, right in the heart of the Historic Seaport.

While the tradition of maintaining Friday as “Sponsor Appreciation Day” was upheld, the fanfare of a large stage, PA System and an entertainment agenda were shelved for the 2020 event. Instead, a modified agenda allowed sponsors to arrive on their own agenda to be recognized, receive their appreciation award, and have a photo op with the FPC crew. During that same Friday evening time frame, the poker card tables were opened to the FPC members, who could now play their poker hands out on the night of their choosing. Above all, the new format adapted traditional activities of the Key West Poker Run, to the new social distancing rule book, and it seems that organizers and participants alike, adapted quite well to the new format.

POKER RUN WINNER-Team FBMG OF TEXAS

Brock Vernon | TX | Team FBMG OF TEXAS | 34' Victory / 2-Mercury Racing 450R To any powerboater, those two simple words RAFT UP… mean so much, because the very thought of tying up your boat to another boat, then another, and another…. well, it just makes for a great party. But when you can put over a hundred powerboats in one calm protected harbor, in the heart of paradise, the magic begins! This Saturday raft up had special meaning for the hundreds who participated, because it represented a release from several months of lock-down and for some, loss of loved ones, friends, or

co-workers to this deadly virus. Who would have known, that around Feb 14, 2020, when CDC officials were flooding the news media with reports of this deadly Coronavirus, that our nation would soon engage in such a life-changing experience? Turn the page 274 days to this November 14th in Key West, and even if just for a few hours, we can be with our best friends and enjoy the boating lifestyle that we are so passionate for.

Saturday Awards

While its roots are said to be from many sources, someone once coined the classic phrase…”It’s not over until the fat lady sings”. In the eyes of a poker run organizer, the phrase might be, “ It’s not over until the final cards are played!”. Then, and only then, can the winners be determined, prizes awarded, pictures taken, and a personal farewell given by the FPC President, to all the loyal supporters, participants and sponsors who help to keep the wheels turning on what has become known as the FPC’s signature poker run event for 28 consecutive years! And just when that happens, the lights are turned down, the sound system turned off, and the cameras packed away…that is exact moment that I, your writer, and your FPC President & Founder, invite my hardworking FPC staff, all eighteen of us, to sit down at a giant table in the Conch Republic, order many drinks and the best thing on the menu, then be thankful for the opportunity to run this great organization and serve our extended powerboat family, who we are very fond of.
