n a strange twist of irony, the powerful forces of a global pandemic that have changed the world and kept millions of citizens in hibernation for more than a year, have also motivated millions of North Americans to discover their newest version of escapism, boating. Yes indeed, the one form of recreation that government regulators could not seem to contain, was the ability of families, friends, and co-workers to break the chains of lock-down, get on board the nearest floating getaway machine, and just feel the freedom of the open water, even if it was for just a few short hours at a time. Even at the height of covid’s curse, South Florida waterways were overflowing with every imaginable pleasure boat from miniatures to mega-yachts, each loaded to capacity with stereos full tilt, dancing bikinis, each with one hand on the grab rail, the other clenched to an oversized Yeti cup! (good visual?)
But in the bigger picture, this is not just a Youtube video from the Miami River in sunny south Florida, ( you know the ones. ) Along coastal regions around the country, on the Great Lakes, inland rivers, and reservoir hot-beds like Lanier, Loto, Cumberland and Havasu… the nation came together to enjoy one form of escapism and everyone was smiling from ear to ear! Of course, most of us in the extended poker run family already knew and loved this lifestyle, and it was just nice to see many newbies coming over to our side, illustrating above all that we were right along when we told our friends, there’s nothing that beats a boating lifestyle. Nothing. So where does that bring us now? First, from the standpoint of our performance marine industry, two words best answer that… On Fire! Boat manufacturers in all categories are at full factory capacity and painfully telling would-be buyers to sit back and be patient for 24 months. The good news is that Americans are working, company profits are at record

numbers, with one good example being Brunswick Corp’s 2021 Q4 revenue and profits soaring, a meaningful statistic due to the corporation’s strong portfolio of marine manufacturing enterprises. Now, for the second observation of “ where are we at now ”, allow me to put my FPC hat back on. The Florida Powerboat Club is seeing record membership numbers, punctuated by a strong infusion of new blood, which has always been the key to FPC’s continued success. The direct impact has been high levels of participation on so many events on 2021, and quite specifically the 29th Annual Key West Poker Run, presented by Cigarette Racing, where the registered participant roster reached an all-time high of 280 teams. So, with no further ado, I proudly present this first 2022 issue of our Powerboating In Paradise Magazine, dedicated exclusively to this epic 6-day adventure with our fun loving FPC members, as they enjoyed what we will always consider to be our Signature poker run event! Finally, as this issue hits the Miami International Boat Show 2022, now returning to the newly renovated Miami Beach Convention Center, we invite our members, sponsors, readers and fans, to join FPC as we proudly celebrate our 30 th year of business. Wow, time flies when you’re having fun.

BANG!
WHILE THE EFFECTS OF THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC TOOK THE 2020 KEY WEST POKER RUN TO A ROSTER OF 160 TEAMS, 2021 CAME BACK WITH A RECORD PERFORMANCE, AS 280 TEAMS AND 1,500 ATTENDEES FOUND THEIR GREAT ESCAPE TO PARADISE 180 MILES SOUTH OF MIAMI!
STORY: STU JONES
There is most always an elevated level anxiety among most poker run teams when it comes to the weather reports for the departure day on any given poker run, especially in the 24 hours leading up to the run. But not this time. As the 29th Annual Key West Poker Run got underway at Haulover Marine Center in North Miami for the Wednesday departure group, there was air of calm and somewhat of a pressure release for attendees and organizers alike, as the predicted 82-degree high temps, no rain and single -digit wind forecasts were the three components that would align for what might be described as the Perfect Non-storm. In fact, it is these very weather conditions that are common during November months in Soflo, delivering ideal boating conditions, amazing colorful content, and most importantly, memorable experiences for so many adventurous teams year after year. This boater-friendly weather fared well for the Wednesday departure group, often described as the “early-bird” teams by FPC organizers. Historically, about 25% of the entire poker run roster would favor the earlier getaway, citing the extra day in Key West, less-crowded lunch and fuel stops, not to mention an apparent increase in the amount of time spent with
6 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE
the FPC photo and video team in the helicopter. Finally, this would be the year that the Wednesday departure earned a new level of popularity, as 40% of the 280-boat roster opted for the Wednesday launch! Translated, that is precisely 110 teams that took to the waterways on this glorious day in November, and it was an amazing sight to see! As the colorful fleet slowly idled out of the Haulover Marine Center basin, there was a new addition to the agenda, as teams were introduced to a new bonus card exchange location, from the Haulover fuel dock just a few hundred yards from the inlet. This proved to be the right choice, by getting the card sequence out of the congested marina basin and was above all, a great photo op for dockside camera crews! But most would agree that the first hurdle of the day, which is typically the turbulent exit from ICW to the coastal waters through Haulover Inlet, was rather smooth and uneventful, due to the light winds and slack tides. Turning to the south, the calm ocean waters made for great coverage from the FPC aerial team, as the boats made the short 8-mile sprint to Government Cut, where the course turns

away from the open waters into Miami’s protected port. As always, this is the preferred course for most Keys-bound events, because the detour through Port Miami is not only scenic in an industrial, city-scape way, it conveniently puts the boats at Rickenbacker Causeway, which is the gateway to the open waters of Biscayne Bay, and a direct shot towards Key Largo. But wait, let’s not get ahead of ourselves, because there is another bonus card opportunity at Grove Harbour Marina, where yet another 30 poker run teams are preparing to launch. From Rickenbacker Causeway, it is only about five miles to Grove Harbour Marina, and although the congestion of 100 powerboats jockeying for position might seem like a recipe for bumper-boats, the captains handled the exchange with ease, and put on an impressive dockside show at each team picked up Bonus card #2. It has always been the position of FPC organizers (myself especially) that this dockside card handoff provides the perfect photo and video op, capturing the excitement of the teams as they embark on this eventful, exciting, and long-awaited poker run adventure!
After a successful poker card exchange, the Wednesday fleet grew to 110-plus powerboat teams, and soon the FPC practice of splitting the poker run boats up into three different speed class, proved its merit. Like clockwork, the red-decal front runners vanished off onto the horizon, with the yellow Performance class boats following the misty vapor trail left by their rooster tails. Falling in place, the green-decal Sportboat class, dominated mostly by multi engine center consoles, stretched the fleet out into an extensive line of high-dollar hardware spanning ten or miles in length. In the eyes of organizers, we could not wish for anything more. It is a safe formula that is simply ideal to accommodate the wide range of performance and speed differences among the diverse fleet. At this point, words cannot replace the visceral imagery of this epic 29th Annual Key West Poker Run, so this writer is going to take a break, and let the following pages tell the story. We’ll pick it up on page 32 with feature coverage of the Thursday departure. SJ

THURSDAY
THUNDER !
WHILE THE 100+ BOAT FLEET FOR THE WEDNESDAY DEPARTURE OF THE 29TH KEY WEST POKER RUN WAS A TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW, THE THURSDAY RUN WITH ITS 170+ BOATS SOMEHOW ETCHED ITSELF INTO THE FPC ARCHIVES AS THE LARGEST SINGLE-DAY, 180-MILE EXODUS OF FUN-SEEKERS FROM MIAMI IN THE CLUB’S 30 YEAR PAST!
STORY: STU JONES
Some people may find it hard to comprehend that a 170-180 boat poker run fleet could hit the waterways in Miami and take the scenic 180-mile trek to Key West, all at the same time! But that is possibly because they have never done it, and quite likely they have seen other poker runs where the erratic “flag start” is comparable to a Formula One crash-fest on Turn 1! In fact, FPC has seen 100-boat departure fleets for the Key West Poker Run for over twenty years, and during that time, organizers have figured out many ways to adapt and improve. Flag starts and driving in big packs at speed, are not among them. When the fleet numbers start pushing the 200-boat threshold, there is significant planning that goes into managing these logistics, and the 2021 outcome proved successful. Other than
32 | POWERBOATING IN PARADISE
the most obvious safety precautions taken by FPC to separate the boats attending into different speed classes, a few other new measures were built into the agenda. The other issue to address with large groups is being able to manage overcrowded checkpoints, but this was taken into consideration by organizers several years earlier, when multiple lunch and fuel stops were added to the course logistics plan. The practice of offering manufacturer-sponsored lunch stops for the brands with strongest representation, seemed to be a helpful solution. For 2021, Thursday offered factory-sponsored lunch stopovers in Key Largo including a Nor-tech Owners lunch at Sundowners Restaurant on Blackwater Sound, while Cigarette Racing took over Sole -by-the -Sea waterfront restaurant at the landmark Playa Largo Resort. A third manufacturer, Mystic Powerboats opted for a middle -Keys lunch stop at Lazydays

Restaurant at Marathon Marina, where a quick exit from the Boot Key Channel put these Mystic owners on a 47-mile straight shot into Key West Harbor. That left the always popular Gilberts Resort in Key Largo to accept the largest group of boats, while a new addition to the checkpoint menu was Chief Marine Group, on Snake Creek in Islamorada. Although this new location is currently undergoing a full-scale renovation, owners offered to sponsor the Key West Poker Run and modify their venue to support lunch activities and provide 90 and 93 octane fuel trucks. All tallied, the sum of lunch and fuel locations totaled five easily accessible waterfront facilities, and all FPC participants were provided with lunch tickets to the location that most suited their cruising agenda.
Wednesday departure group( see feature page 6). That said, it was apparent in the early stages of the run from Haulover Marine Center, that the winds had picked up substantially in comparison to the Wednesday conditions, and it was a bumpy ride for those who opted to exit via Haulover Inlet for the first leg of the run. On the plus side, that would have the outcome of generating some exciting air-time “money shot” photos for many teams, as can be seen in the following pages of this editorial feature. Enough said, we’ll let the pictures tell the story, as we proudly introduce the members of the Florida Powerboat Club, while they embark on this recordattendance 29th Key West Poker Run, presented by Cigarette Racing. Let the fun begin and the memories be made! SJ
Other than those modifications, the Thursday run was set up as a mirror image of its day-earlier counterpart, the

f there is one event that illustrates the true freedom and spirit of Key West, and the tradition of “letting one’s hair down”, it would be FantasyFest. But since the Key West Poker Run falls about two weeks after this annual tradition, it seemed appropriate to bring that flare to the Key West Poker Run Village, giving participants a taste for the “wild side” of this fun small town at the end of the road. Four years ago, the Key West Body Painting Exhibition took center stage for the Thursday night welcome party at the Conch Republic Key West Poker Run Village, and the event has since become a popular attraction.
just have a little fun, Key West style. Thanks to all the lovely ladies who participated, and congratulations to our winner, Shelby. (first names only- Remember…what happens in Key West, STAYS in Key West).
Local body paint artist Hector Godoy and three other talented artists rose to the occasion, as about ten lovely ladies bared their bodies for the task. It might be appropriate to call them contestants, since there would be prize money awarded to the top three finalists, and a panel of VIP judges were on hand to assist with the task. But the presence of some female FPC poker run attendees up on the stage illustrated that it was not about the money. For these ladies, the $ 1,000 purse was clearly not be the incentive, rather …the chance to

T
he Key West Poker Run has earned the reputation as one of the leading poker runs in the country, with complimentary adjectives and unofficial titles of all sorts. Participants from every corner of the nation have described Key West as their “Bucket List” poker run, while marine industry sponsors have often classified Key West as the “Superbowl of poker runs!” While FPC organizers are flattered by all the kind remarks, we must humbly admit, that in addition to the loyal participants who join the event year-after-year, it is the dedicated support of the club’s marine industry sponsors, who help to keep these wheels turning by providing the FPC team with the funding necessary to undertake such a large -scale event. In recognition of these sponsors, the Key West Poker Run puts aside the entire day of Friday as Sponsor Appreciation Day, which culminates Friday evening with The Sponsor Award Party. The entire evening is focused on paying tribute and introducing our key sponsors, which include our annual Series Sponsors who support FPC throughout the entire year, along with the Feature Sponsors, many of whom make Key West an
annual event. Every year, FPC organizers endeavor to create truly unique awards, and for 2021 it was the historic Key West Lighthouse statue. These 17-inch tall, 5-pound awards were custom-made by FPC staff and its service providers, accented with fully-lit LED lights in the lighthouse lantern room. Please join FPC in recognizing these key industry players for their continued support. SJ

AERIAL PHOTO FEATURE The 2021 Key West Poker Run set a new FPC record for aerial flying time with helicopters, giving the FPC photo and video team the best vantage points to capture those incredible “Money Shots” and several hours of video content for the FPC YouTube channel! The flying program kicked off Wednesday with two helicopters covering the run from North Miami to well past Marathon, then stepping up to three helicopters for Thursday. Once in Key West, FPC curtailed Friday aerial activities while RWO dominated the waterborne activities with a closed Key West Harbor, for their World Championship offshore races. The FPC program ramped up Saturday morning, as hundreds of boats headed out for fun runs on the local Key West waters. The morning mission booked two hours flying time with the Miami-based R44, then overlapped with another locally based Robinson R44, flying for an additional two hours to chase down the FPC poker run teams. Among the highlights of the Saturday events, was the raft up party at Woman Key, about eight miles outside of Key West Harbor. While this event started years ago with Boca Grande as its backdrop, local authorities feared environmental impacts from the massive fleet, and decided to legislate a weekend no-boats-allowed area for all powerboats in this National refuge. Instead, the nearby Woman Key provided a much-better protected anchorage, and has since been the chosen venue, weather permitting. Special thanks to all the photographers, videographers and pilots for displaying their skills and generating some of the most incredible content we’ve seen in this event’s 29-year history!

SATURDAY night
Awards Party
S
taying true to its traditional practices, the Key West Poker Run put Saturday night aside for all the teams to come together for a festive evening of food, fun and competitive spirit. But the competition is left to Lady Luck, as teams played out their final poker cards and hoped for the best poker hand, determined solely by the luck of the draw. Pulling cards commenced one night earlier during the Friday party, as organizers realized that playing out poker hands for almost three hundred poker run teams, just might just take a little while. Fortunately, the staff at the Conch Republic Seafood Company took care of the heavy lifting, which included serving dinner to hundreds of ticketed party guests at the 350-seat open air restaurant and ensuring that every bartender was fully stocked with premium spirits. The evening agenda included the President’s Choice Awards, which features a wide variety coveted awards, including the Best V-Bottom, Best Cat, Best Center Console and of course, the highly acclaimed, Sexiest Crew Award! While videos of the earlier days’ aerial footage played on the jumbo video screen, the crowed enjoyed the camaraderie of their fellow boaters and the casual vibe of this festive venue. The backdrop of sponsor displays in the adjacent Key West Poker Run village, along with the colorful in-water sponsor dock display boats, raised the bar of showmanship in every way. Poker run teams were offered the chance to increase their winning odds, by purchasing extra poker hands, and by late evening, the list of finalists was announced, with Bret Laso taking the poker run Grand Prize. Special thanks to the manufacturing sponsors Deep Impact Custom Boats and Blackwater boats, along with their Worldwide dealer Plantation Boat Mart, for providing the $ 10,000 Cash prize to the winning team, and congratulations to all the winners!
