FEBRUARY 2016

Letter from the

PRESIDENT

N

ever before has the world seemed so full of change. Some change that’s been good, some not so good. But change reminds us, above all, that we should never get “too comfortable” with things that we cannot control…because sudden change will upset the balance that has become our comfort zone. Conversely, if certain aspects of our lives seem to get mundane or repetitive, we sometimes need to take charge, and figure out the best changes that need to be made. I set this premise purely from the standpoint of Florida Powerboat Club, and the direction I would like to take this organization after twenty four years at the helm. Essentially, we are a service company, providing services to our “members” who are passionate about powerboating, and enjoy doing so on Florida’s beautiful waterways. These services translate to staging well exFloridaGOT A ecuted, based poker run COMMENT events, with a cerFOR ME? tain amount of E-MAIL ME AT structure, a strong STU@FLPOWERBOAT.COM presence of safety management, scenic cruising, premium lodging, safe harbor at night and quality media coverage. To complete the equation, we blend excitement, entertainment and social interaction with fellow members. If the formula works, many would say it needs No change! Others might say…it’s getting boring, we’d like to see some change. So, the good news for everyone is, we’re going to do a little bit of both in the coming year. First, we’re going to keep relatively the same formats for our more popular or signature events, like the Miami 4

|

POWERBOATING IN PARADISE

Boat Show Poker Run, Tampa Bay, Emerald Coast, and our 24-year November Key West Poker Run. But we can also expect to see some changes, by adding new Bahamas events and by making our first attempt to visit Cuba, tentatively planned for May, barring any huge challenges. These are exciting adventures that will take some carefully calculated first-steps, and above all, they are a welcome change to our event calendars. Finally, we’ve also embarked on a 9-day European driving, boating event, which has already reached ten confirmed couples (teams) , leaving just two spaces open at this time. On another front, there is an ongoing need to recruit new blood to our sport, which we can all agree, is a pretty expensive lifestyle! With that in mind, I’ve created a new entry-level class for 2016, called Sport-Twin. This class focuses on twin outboard center console and/or stern-drive boats, 28-36 foot in length, mostly priced at under $ 200K for the complete package with a trailer. The cruising speeds will be locked in at 50-55mph, and we’ll allow this class to attend summer Bahamas events, weather permitting. To introduce this class, FPC has been provided with a 33’ OceanHawk center console, powered with Mercury 300 Verados, by the factory outlet store, BoatsDirectUSA. This offshore center console will also provide an ideal platform for our safety management program, carrying dive-rescue paramedics on board during FPC events. That’s a big addition to our event format, and a much needed change to attract new blood to our sport. At the opposite end of the speed and power spectrum, I see the need to separate the fastest of the fleet,

Stu & Jackie Jones

the frontrunners of every poker run, by creating a class that says it all… Supercat. This is purely a catamaran class, for boats that cruise at 125mph plus, and top out well over 150mph on a regular basis. Of course, I will make it clear, that as President of FPC and having over thirty years of performance boating experience, I do not condone these kinds of speeds on any poker run, especially on Florida waterways, which are abundant with debris, wildlife and other recreational boaters. But this is a change that needed to be made to our class-format within the poker runs, due to the tremendous disparity between the slowest vs. the fastest boats in our sport. The captains that want to operate within this class, will be asked to display a much higher level of operating experience and responsibility, and they most certainly will be expected to be on their “A” game every time they step into the boat. These new class additions, bring our club to a total of five operating classes, mostly determined by speed. Our over-riding objective, is to keep events safe, and give fellow members a chance to truly enjoy their Florida Powerboat Club poker run event experience. This edition of Powerboating in Paradise celebrates yet another historic change…with the Miami International Boat Show moving from South Beach, to Virginia Key. We are very excited to be a part of this historymaking move, and we invite everyone to come by and see FPC at our booth # J1460 in the J-Tent. We’ve got plenty more fantastic changes to tell you about!

Stu Jones

President & Founder, FPC

PORTS of FALL OVER 180 RECREATIONAL POWERBOAT TEAMS FROM WORLDWIDE HOMEPORTS CAME TOGETHER WITH THE PERFORMANCE MARINE INDUSTRY’S LEADING PLAYERS FOR A FESTIVE WEEKEND OF HORSEPOWER IN PARADISE!

no question that the allure of boating on Florida’s scenic waterways has spread worldwide, Tandhere’s Florida Powerboat Club’s 23rd annual Key West

Poker Run illustrated this very point far beyond anyone’s expectation. With a roster of over 180 poker run teams, including every imaginable hull and powerplant configuration, a simple scan of homeports revealed more than a a dozen teams from Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany and the UK, not to mention ten teams along from our Canadian neighbors to the north. Combine that with U.S. representation from more than thirty-one individual states, including Puerto Rico, and one might consider renaming this annual November boating bonanza to the United Nations Poker Run. Hmmmm…. now that’s got a nice ring to it! What started out as a simple owners rally for Sonic powerboats in 1993, has evolved and transformed itself into what we’d affectionately consider to be our signature poker run event. Why or how this occurred, can be answered by ensuring the presence of a handful of basic ingredients that are the cornerstones of a good poker run. You need good weather, an enjoyable poker run course, quality accommodations, a safe harbor for the boat, great food, plenty of parties, cool prizes, (cars are always a big hit!) and an awesome fleet of powerboats! And last but not least, you need to have Passionate people that place a high priority on having fun! Let’s take it from there, and perhaps we’ll understand why this has become a bucket list poker run for so many enthusiasts in the last two decades. In previous issues of Powerboating in Paradise, I’ve gone to great lengths to verbalize what a fantastic event this has become, with editorial features that run upwards of 2,000 words! For this issue, I’ve chosen to depart from the art of the pen, and rather rely on the power of the image. If every picture is truly worth a thousand words, then certainly the next fifty pages of colorful, action packed photos should rack up more words than I can ever write in one issue.

POWERBOATING IN PARADISE

Poker run boats pass through the Port of Miami from Goverment Cut to Biscayne Bay.

As the event’s founder, and president of Florida Powerboat Club, I would like to thank OffleaseOnly for their generous support by providing a 2015 Camaro Convertible as our Grand Prize, and Mercury Racing for returning as our Key West Title sponsor. Of course, it goes without saying, that without our passionate FPC members to keep returning year after year, we would never have achieved such a great outcome for this annual festival that above all, celebrates the powerboating lifestyle in truly mind-boggling fashion. Enjoy! SJ

Key Run West 2015 Poker Many would say "variety" is the spice of life, and the variety of boats and horsepower seems to be the over-riding theme of the Key West Poker Run every year! At one end of the spectrum is the constantly growing presence of high-end center console poker run boats, while the 170 mph fast cats continue to be

Ray & Kristine Gremaux (NY) RENEGADE - 33' Renegade

the frontrunners on on every event. While FPC has separated the boats into three classes in recent years, (2) new classes will be added for 2016, accounting for over 100mph in speed differential between the fastest and the slowest boats.

lorida Powerboat Club celebrates 10 years of calling Grove Harbour Marina our port of call in Miami. More recently, with SeaIsle Marina closing its doors to transient boaters, Grove Harbour Marina came to the rescue, offering extended docking privileges to FPC members and doing everything they could to accommodate our larger events, like the Key West Poker Run, and the Miami Boat Show Poker Run. With a recent expansion of the Grove Harbour Marina's property holdings, owner Alan Lima promises great plans for the site's redevelopment, with new facilities and a fantastic restaurant/special event center that will be poker-run-friendly in every way! We can't wait to be a part of this exciting project, and thank all the staff at Grove Harbour Marina for rolling out the greeting mat to our FPC members! SJ

FPC Girl - Arian enjoys the helm seat of LADY LISA

Ihighlights n our last issue of Powerboating in Paradise Magazine, we featured several pages of colorful event from the 2015 edition of the Tampa Bay Poker Run. However, before we got every boat and all the best shots laid down in the 8-page feature, we just ran out of room and out of time!

We know how much our members love seeing their boats in these cool shots taken by our helicopter crew, along with the team pics from around the docks and at the poker run parties… so we’re pleased to offer “Part Two” of this popular Spring Fling. Most of those who have attended this event, would agree that this St. Petersburg-based poker run is fast becoming one of FPC’s premier poker runs, and remains as the club’s only event that takes place annually on Florida’s west coast, mostly on the protected waters of Tampa Bay. Headquartered at the landmark Renaissance Vinoy Resort & Marina, this fine historic hotel offers luxurious accommodations and a first class marina, just steps from the front lobby of the hotel. More importantly, the vibrant nightlife of downtown St. Petersburg, which offers fabulous dining, shopping, lounges and clubs…. is just a few short blocks away. For the upcoming 2016 event, attendees will enjoy the very chic and upscale motorsports expo, Festivals of Speed, a one-day showcase of classic, exotic and outrageous automobiles and performance hardware of all descriptions. Hopefully, these fabulous photos in our 2015 feature get you all revved up to join us…. and remember, it’s first-come-first-serve at the Vinoy Resort, so we urge you to book right away, if you plan to attend. 3rd HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAPT SAFETY! It's been three years since we commenced the Florida Powerboat Club safety management program in February 2013, for the Miami Boat Show Poker Run. This program was put into effect after slew of boating related accidents across the country in prior years, and addresses the need for a stronger presence of highly trained first responders on the FPC poker run course during the events. Since its inception, fire-rescue personnel with water rescue training from Miami to Pensacola, have been recruited to ride along on Florida Fish & Wildlife Patrol (FWC) patrol boats that are strategically positioned on the course. Thanks to all our safety personnel and to the FPC members for embracing the program! SJ

WINTER

WARM UP! Marathon Sty l e!

THE 15TH ANNUAL WINTER POKER RUN TO MARATHON PROVIDED A MUCH-NEEDED ESCAPE FROM THE WINTER BLUES, AS OVER EIGHTY FPC MEMBERS FROM NORTHERN CLIMATES SOAKED UP THREE DAYS OF SUN & FUN!

STORY: STU JONES l PHOTOS: JERRY WYSZATYCKI & STU JONES

F

lorida Powerboat Club members from over ten states kicked off the 2016 poker run season with a mid-winter escape to Marathon, in the heart of the Florida Keys. I had the pleasure of starting the run a day earlier in my own back yard, as I jumped on board Ron Szolak’s new 42 Mystic center console, powered by trip 350 Verados. Ron recently relocated his residence from Michigan sunny Pompano Beach, and plans to spend more time in Florida, while keeping his finger on the pulse, (and the purse) of his successful FLIGHTCLUB back home in Detroit. While we departed in the rain on that soggy Thursday afternoon from Hillsboro Inlet, the well-designed cockpit of the new Mystic 42, along with her amazingly tall

freeboard, kept us bone-dry for the offshore romp in four foot quartering seas. Coconut Grove…here we come! A Thursday night soiree at the Grove Bay Grill got several of the FPC members re-acquainted, while many others were meeting for the very first time. Whether they owned a Concept center console, a 39 Top Gun, or a 160mph Skater, it was apparent that the powerboating passion was shared across the board and everyone was just happy to be there. After all, considering that 80 percent of the participants were from nearly ten colder, snow-ridden states including Michigan, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts, it was a welcome escape from the January blues. For those of us climatized Floridians, it certainly was

a cool start at Grove Harbour Marina on Friday morning, where our seasonal temps had dropped to the low sixties, but the clear skies and west winds made for calm seas as the group departed on Biscayne Bay. Warm jackets were certainly in order, as we loaded the boats for the 11am start. After a touch-and-go for a poker card on the docks of Grove Harbour Marina, we were off and running on Biscayne Bay for the short 50-mile romp to Gilberts in Key Largo. As always, the fast cats of the hi-performance class were the first to break away…much to the frustration of our helicopter crew, who were in hot pursuit after a scheduled sponsor photo shoot that was announced at the

Our newest FPC girl TANYA, joined us on the Winter Poker Run for her first time riding on performance boats. She kicked the day off with a chilly photo shoot riding on the brand new BoatsdirectUSA Deep Impact 36, but finally warmed up on Ken Armstrong’s 48 MTI Phantom for the lunch stop at Gilberts.

There was a strong showing of Cigarette owners on the first event for 2016! Tom Polski celebrated his first anniversary of owning his 38 Cigarette Top Gun, Efficient Lighting, while Don House joined his first FPC run in his 36 Cigarette, House Party.

dockside captains meeting. For the sake of you guys who are wondering why your pictures are not in the magazine feature, you can blame your over-anxious throttle hand for that outcome. One of these days you may learn, the helicopter flies at max speed of 100mph for our photo session. Want pics? Wait for the chopper, get your one minute of fame, then you can push the hammer down! We continued our cool-but-dry daytrip through the scenic Keys to Marathon, which featured the occasional low-level buzz by Luis Sotero in his amphibious seaplane, then the pack settled in to a full marina at the Faro Blanco Yacht Club & Resort. Unlike a year ago, when Florida Powerboat Club arrived to an

empty marina and then christened the new property which had officially opened just days earlier, the landscape changed dramatically. On all sides of the landmark white lighthouse, (translation Faro Blanco in Spanish) the marina was jammed tight with cruisers, trawlers and yachts of many descriptions, illustrating that Faro Blanco had quickly made its way onto the mustvisit cruising agenda of many yachtsmen passing through the Keys. Our twenty-plus teams checked into their Hyatt Place Resort rooms, and while many stayed on property to enjoy the food and ambiance of the Lighthouse Grill, others ventured off to nearby eateries to experience the Marathon nightlife. One highlight of the evening for the writer,

was joining Florida Keys radio celeb, Bill Hoebee from Wail 99.5/Sun 103.1, for a live-remote broadcast that transmitted to thousands of listeners from Miami to Key West. Our message was simply, “Come to the Faro Blanco if you want to check out the coolest powerboats in the country and meet the most spirited folks ever!” Yes guys, we were bragging on the air at what big shooters you all are…and it worked, because a lot of visitors stopped by Saturday morning to check things out. Saturday’s fun run took us out through the 7-mile bridge and offshore in the calm coastal waters, thanks to the light Continued on next page

west winds, for a short tour around Boot Key, Marathon Key and along Key Colony Beach, where we transited ocean-to-bay via the Vaca Cut, arriving at the Island Fish Co. There was plenty of open dockage and great seafood on the menu, as over sixty of our participants dined in the open air restaurant and picked up another poker card, before heading back out on the calm bay water. With the day still young and the sun still shining, our small fleet throttled up for another high-speed sprint, and I was reminded just how spectacular Mark & Eileen Fischer’s 52 Nor-Tech was, as Mark pushed the beast to nearly 110 mph! Soon after, we made a rendezvous with two carefully positioned yachts, anchored on the lee side of Boot Key in about 10 feet of water. Ken Armstrong’s Viking 74 Sportfish and Bob Berg’s hundred footer named “The Program”, provided the ultimate mother ship duo, as dozens of the poker runners boarded for cocktails, snacks, great tunes and the perfect vibe for a Raft-up in Paradise. A few teams missed this festive float-party, as new member Dr. Sam Singer was joined by Ron Szolak for a 120mph blast to Key West in the Doc’s 388 Skater, for lunch at the Pier House overlooking Key West Harbor. (How could they resist those incredible cat-play conditions?!) After two great days on the water, our attendees assembled at a private ballroom at the Hyatt Place to enjoy the company of new friends, and play out their poker cards. Peoples’ Choice awards were presented in a total of eight categories, and lady luck helped two teams take home prizes for the best poker hands! Congratulations to Phil & Kim Mendelson for winning first place in the “Air Class”, while Mike and Christie Fuqua from Tennessee, took the top honors in “Sea Class”, running their 32 Sunsation for the weekend. Sunday morning, the group trickled out in waves, and the three boats that went home on trailers, supported our normal attrition average of 15%....revealing that 3 out of 20, was right on par. WINTER POKER RUN 2016 Overall, fun was had by all, and in spite of the cooler temperatures, with over half our attendees coming from snow and ice for this mid-winter fling, most would agree it was every bit worth the effort. Special thanks to the FPC video team of David Steel, Mike Frenden, and Alex Egan, along with our video content contributors, for thrashing away all weekend, to produce a take-home BluRay video for all our guests. That may be all it takes, to get them through another month of wicked winter...before returning for their next glorious weekend with FPC! SJ
