hank you for picking up our premiere 2012 issue of Powerboating in Paradise Magazine, which has its offi cial launch at the 69th Annual Miami International Boat Show! I can’t think of a better place to proudly hand out this colorful coff ee-table-keeper, which appears to be aging gracefully, yet remaining vibrant and full of new content with every issue. But I may be just a little prejudice, so why don’t you be the judge. One thing is very diff erent about this issue, in that it features a solo act on the national poker run circuit, the 19th Annual Key West Poker Run. In the world of marine publishing, it might seem inconceivable to the most seasoned editors and publishers, that dedicating an entire 108 page issue of a quarterly magazine to feature coverage of just one poker run event, might be risky, to say the least. If that’s the case, then FPC may have just broken all the rules. Not that

we haven’t broken a few along the way, in our dozen or so years of publishing Powerboating in Paradise Magazine. But justifying this move follows simple scientifi c logic. First, do the math. If you add up the boat entry list, total the number of days, tally the total attendee head count, measure the distance travelled by all the boats, on the 400 mile round-trip from Miami to Key West, and come up
February 2012 with some hard numbers on fuel consumed….well it’s just mind boggling. Now in all fairness, some of us may be less likely to be impressed by the facts, fi gures and statistical reports…and instead be a little more intrigued by the visual side of the Key West Poker Run equation. After all, with what is unquestionably the largest most stellar collection of the lastest high-performance off shore powerboats at any one place on the planet earth (since we don’t know if there are poker runs on Mars,) there is also the purely visual factor. Th at which sends little impulses to a diff erent part of the brain, and depending on how any one of these boats is equipped, with—ah— accessories let’s say, those impulses may avoid going to the brain altogether and cause a completely diff erent reaction by the curious onlooker, (a.k.a gawker.) Th e point is, that the Key West Poker Run is a pretty big deal, not only for those who attend, but for all of us here at Florida Powerboat Club. We are very proud of this annual event, and not afraid to show it off . So that, my friends, is how we continue to break the rules of the publishers handbook, and I hope you enjoy every inch of this colorful issue! Finally, in the wake of the tragic off shore racing accidents that occurred in Key West while many of us were present, combined with the untimely deaths of some very close FPC members who lost personal battles in life, I would like to dedicate this issue of Powerboating in Paradise to fi ve great men, all of whom shared the same passion that we all do. Please join me in a salute to our lost friends.

ER RUN In the two decades that the Florida Powerboat Club has been staging the Key West Offshore Poker Run, most enthusiasts would agree that having the Key West World Championship Powerboat Race as a backdrop has always been a most fitting grand finale to the exciting journey through the scenic Florida Keys. But for the 2011 edition of this horse-power charged week, no one could ever have imagined the races would be marred by such tragedy. Florida Powerboat Club pays tribute to the loss of boating friends and racers, on page 96.

f there’s one thing we’ve learned in FPC 101 over the years is that it never hurts to listen to your club members and freshen up the format for poker runs whenever possible. The early departures became a popular addition to the Key West Poker Run format over a decade ago, and the 2011 edition saw record numbers for the Wednesday departure. The logic is simple….leave a little earlier, stay a little longer, and when there is so much going on in Key West, it’s an easy decision for most. The end result is a poker run format that spans as many as seven days for many participants, and for some of these die-hard enthusiasts, even that aggressive agenda still seems far too short. The captain’s meeting turned social hour, took place Tuesday evening at the newly renovated Biscayne Marriott, where the down-sized meeting room soon had chairs filled and the common vibe immediately reflected a pleasant yet eager anticipation of the next several days of fun. People seemed happy to be in Miami, and knowing their colorful machines were docked, fueled, and ready for the next several days of fun, certainly made it easier than ever to warm up to many newcomers who we were meeting for the first time. We were introduced to a couple named Ray and Pam Therrien from Mass, Jorge & Ann Arellano from Ocala Florida, and Jerry & Donna Howell from Arkansas, illustrating the variety of people, boats and the places they call home, on the Key West Poker Run roster. Of course the veterans were in full force, with names like Bill Pyburn Jr. and Bob Blandford from North
Florida; along with Leon Ortemond and Richie Prince from Louisiana. One of the big arrivals on the scene was the South Florida Skater dealership, Skater Nation, which had been recently formed through a partnership between FPC member David Peterson, and South Florida engine builder Tommy Hoffstetter, who made his name building Chief engines for racers and poker runners. The new sponsor arrived with an entry of two Skaters, a Sterling powered 40’ and a brand new 48’ Skater powered by Mercury Racing 1350’s—not to mention an impressive display in the poker run village. Once again, it’s the firm belief of this writer, that your time will be better spent viewing all the fabulous photos from the Wednesday run, rather than getting just my solo perspective. That said, before I jump ahead several pages to a more detailed account of the Thursday departure group, I wish to convey two messages. First, a very special thanks to Chris and Angela Bradley from Texas, for volunteering as our Wednesday paceboat, and allowing me to jump in and ride along with them on their 40 Nor-Tech Roadster, Rainmaker. What a great ride, and a perfect bunch to spend a day with! Secondly, for those of you who participated on the Wednesday run, I applaud the attention that all of you gave to our safety guidelines and the willingness of every captain to chill out, enjoy the ride, and stay off the throttles until the “right” time. This provided a safe enjoyable day for everyone, and as your twenty year veteran organizer, my hats off to each and every one of you! Great job! S.J.

“ATTENTION ALL DRIVERS...THIS IS NOT A RACE!”
STORY: STU JONES l PHOTOS: JIM WENGER & PAUL ZIGLER
There is no instruction manual for managing a poker run fleet of over a hundred high-powered boats on a 170 mile charted course that requires critical navigation through shallow shoals, coral reefs and twisting mangrove waterways. But with a growing awareness of safety in the poker run community, and availability of precise, yet easy to use chart plotters, the challenges commonly faced in the past, seem to be diminishing. Of course, that leaves but one demon to grab by the horns. Speed.
G
azing down off the balcony of my Biscayne Marriott suite to the docks of Sea Isle Marina, beheld an impressive sight, with every available slip occupied by a colorful fiberglass creation that was a unique signature of its owner. Even more impressive was knowing that by Thursday morning, over five hundred weekend warriors would occupy these great-escape machines, while their captains commanded the throttles that unleashed thousands of horsepower for an adrenaline charged trek to the Florida Keys. It’s mind boggling to calculate the energy of this mass exodus of brute power, and breath-taking to be in the middle of it. The Thursday departure of the Key West 2011 event was as big and as impressive as any Key West event in recent years. As the boats congregated in Biscayne Bay just south
of the Rickenbacker Causeway, it was easy to see a variety of hull types, which were recognized by offering three departure groups as always. Fast cats and high-powered vees that cruise 100mph plus departed ahead of the rest, followed by a brief delay for the Performance Class—cats and vees that cruise at or about 75 mph. The final group, called the Sport Cruising class, included a variety of v-bottoms and outboard center consoles that are comfortable at cruising speeds around 50 mph. The staggered departures went off as planned, and soon Biscayne Bay was covered by a mile wide vapor trail and a layer of light mist that lingered above the water’s surface long after the rooster tails of the big fast machines were Continued on next page

“...a colorful sea of fiberglass creations with over five hundred weekend warriors occupying these great-escape machines, ready to command the throttles and unleash thousands of horsepower from Key Biscayne to Key West.” no longer visible. If you had been riding up the rear, then you probably kept your sunglass cloth close at hand. As the speeds of poker run boats increased in recent years, it became apparent to FPC organizers that paceboats would no longer play a vital role navigating the fastest (triple digit speed) groups. Case studies on most events proved that at 100 mph plus, keeping up on the whereabouts of the paceboat was beyond the manageable senses of most captains, and trying to do too much at 140 mph can be a safety deterrent. That said, the 70 mph performance class and 50 mph sport cruising class still engaged an official paceboat for navigation purposes, and I had the pleasure of riding a 39’ Cigarette Top Gun powered by Mercury Racing 700’s, jumping on board Team Supreme with Bill Melchione from New Jersey. Cool ride, superb driving by Bill, and what a great ride we had! With Thursday being the largest group, the poker run lunch stop was split between Gilberts in Key Largo, and Holiday Isle Resort in Islamorada, recently renamed the Post Card Inn after a full scale renovation. Both locations offered a lavish lunch, and soon after I realized that Post Card Inn was a little light on attendance, a phone call came in from a club member who was with a large group of about 26
POWERBOATING IN PARADISE
twenty boats that had missed the turn into the Holiday Isle channel from the bay side. I’m guessing that most of them were running 125mph in the open bay waters, and I’m also guessing they were twenty miles past the mark before they even noticed! (It’s the poker run equivalent of the Concorde missing the runway in JFK and reaching Boston before it could circle back.) Needless to say, those guys were so far ahead of the pack, we didn’t see them the rest of the day! Seems like they did just fine getting to Key West. After lunch at Holiday Isle, it was time for our second leg of the run, from Islamorada to Ohio Key, just past Marathon. Changing my ride is a common practice mid-way through the run, and I hopped in the jump seat alongside Jean-Louis Fatio in his new 40’ MTI powered by the new Mercury Racing twin-turbo 1100’s. This was actually the first time I’d ever been in any boat with this engine package, and it was truly amazing. We joined a pack of boats that headed offshore from the resort, and turned south towards Marathon. Brad Schoenwald managed the throttles while Jean Louis weaved through the maze of lobster pots south of Islamorada, and except for a few close calls, the racing cleavers remained in tact. Speeds in the open water averaged well over 100+, and with occasional bursts to 140 mph, it was only minutes to Marathon. The 7-Mile
Bridge was soon in sight. Too soon actually, as the chopper had not yet caught up, and the video sequence we had planned was on hold for several minutes until we were back in communication with the R44. The wait proved worthwhile, as we set up the money shot through the Moser Channel under the 7-Mile Bridge, with the chopper crew in hot pursuit. Sunshine Key Marina was buzzing with activity, as dozens of poker runners patiently waited their turns to fuel up for the final leg to Key West. The choices included 90 non-ethanol or race fuel up to 116 octane, provided by a tanker from VP Racing Fuels. It was surprising to see so many boats getting the high-octane fuel, proving once again, that these guys see the big picture. If you want to punish your equipment on the last forty mile leg into Key West, buy the best possible fuel you can. $12 per gallon? Big deal…a rebuild can run as high as fifty grand, not to mention the embarrassment of blowing up three miles out of Key West harbor. Needless to say, the Thursday run went off without any major mishaps, and considering the logistics of this one day alone, it was a great outcome. Time to board the chopper at Sunshine Key and head back to Miami. Twelve poker run teams await, and Friday will be the final departure. Total count…one hundred sixty teams. SJ

FRIDAY RUN Poker Run! STORY & PHOTOS: STU JONES
After winding down from the 100-boat adventure on Thursday, the ten boat Friday run seemed to operate on cruise control. When you have a diverse group of boaters from all over the United States, and a small fleet of boats that range from an outboard center console to a 140 mph cat, there’s a commonly faced challenge… What speed should we run? But this was not an issue for the final departure group on the Key

West Poker Run because everyone agreed that we should all run the same speed and stick together. That made 60 mph the perfect cruise speed, and as I jumped on board with Tom Beagle in his 36 Sunsation XRT, I knew one thing for certain…this was going to be a great day on the water!

After a second tragic incident on the race course Friday, there was a certain sense of numbness felt throughout the racing community, that trickled across town, and filtered into the Key West Poker Run Village.

he offshore races took their usual Saturday off, while a large cruiseship berthed in Key West Harbor and poker runners began circulating around the docks of the Conch Republic, the Galleon and Key West Bight Marina. Many expressed concern about the apparent wind, and the chance of a cancelled fun run. The plan was kept simple. The show must go on. We donned our photo and video gear and headed for the Key West airport, where our pilot, Mark Palmieri waited patiently at his Robinson R44 with doors off and two hours of fuel. (It’s not wise to fly with a full tank in fast-paced aerial photography due to weight concerns.) We knew full well there would be at least a couple dozen boats out to play, not to mention the teams were scheduled for photo sessions with the chopper. Never would we have imagined that number would escalate to over a hundred boats. The “photo zone” on the south side of the island, was occupied with colorful boats in all directions. The photo mission got underway immediately with light chop near shore and great lighting, creating almost perfect conditions to capture the coveted money shot. Deep Impact lead the charge and Tim Gallagher throttled up the new 399, followed closely by Miquel Teledo and David Sacher in their colorful triple out-
board 36’s. Then a flury of anxious weekend warriors funneled out into the zone. Mark & Eileen Fischer in their 50’ Nortech, then George & Shannon Argyros, who were right on cue for a family photo on their 43’ Donzi—a shot later used as their family’s holiday season greeting card. Then Shawn Berger, Ralph Hitchcock, and Kerry Leone. They just kept coming. These spirited poker runners were locked and loaded with nothing stopping them from getting out for sun, fun and high speed thrills! But what goes up, must come down, and after a ninety minute session of shooting non-stop, our tank was empty and our photo cards were full with thousands of hi-res action aerials. It was time for a pitstop, and a run to CVS for more supplies, otherwise, how could we ever take full advantage of these ideal conditions? Shortly after 1pm, we were back in the air with several more gigs of shooting ammo heading straight towards Boca Grande. As we approached a pack of boats from behind, we saw decks bobbing towards the sky, and it was soon apparent that the chop had turned to swell. Even the biggest and fastest boats saw captains holding back on the throttles, and respecting what Mother Nature had served up. But there was little hesitation, and no measurable deviation in their westbound course—they were all headed for Boca Grande. POWERBOATING IN PARADISE

BOCA GRANDE Beach Party In Paradise
One of the most popular destinations for a picnic-style boating daytrip, is Boca Grande, which is the largest and westernmost of a small chain of islands called the Mule Keys.
T
hese uninhabited keys are within the boundaries of the Key West National Wildlife Refuge, which puts most of the area under federal restrictions when it comes to where you can anchor or beach boats. Since bird nesting is a primary concern in the uplands, absolutely no hiking or walking beyond the beaches is permited and law enforcement regularly patrols the area. Of these dozen or more islands, Boca Grande remains the most accessible to the boating public, where boats can easily nose up into the sandy beach, with enough water at their sterns to keep the props and raw water intakes out of trouble. Of course with fast moving tides, it’s important to pay attention to the movement of the water, as crews often get caught up in the party-like atmosphere, not realizing their boat has either loosened its grip in the sand and begun to float away, or worse, has had its keel deeply embedded in the sand to the extent that breaking free requires substantial horsepower and physical manpower. So what about this “party-like” atmosphere? Well, let’s just say it’s good fun, often with amateur entertainment, and for the most part, nobody gets hurt. We captured these spectacular images of our Key West poker runners, as they enjoyed this piece of paradise. POWERBOATING IN PARADISE

IN MEMORIAM Florida Powerboat Club members lost two close boating friends and the offshore racing community faced the tragic loss of three great boat racers this past November, during the Key West Worlds, which were attended by over seven hundred Florida Powerboat Club members. We pay tribute to all five of these great men, who will be missed dearly by all of us. JOHN COSTELLO, ran the CRC MTI on poker runs throughout Florida. He actually won first place on his last event, the Sunny Isles Poker Run last June 2011. John’s death was unrelated to powerboating.

DAVE GINFRIDA from New Jersey was active with FPC for well over a decade, running a Black Thunder followed by a triple engine 50 Nortech. His boats were always named, No Compromise, which is how he ran his life. David’s death was unrelated to powerboating.

The Hardin Marine N-Control foot throttle is used by some of the most elite boat builders today and is available in single engine, and dual engine models. www.hardin-marine.com
PATENTED DESIGNS INCREASE PEAK PERFORMANCE
Design constraints with cast iron manifolds create internal air resistance, making it difficult for exhaust gas to flow freely as it exits the cylinder head. Increase horsepower, mid-range torque and fuel efficiency with Custom Marine e-top headers. Lighter than highly restrictive cast iron exhaust manifolds using patented design to provide greater gains in power and performance. www.custommarine.com

KEYS TO
HAPPI
WHILE MANY TRAVELERS come to the Florida Keys to relax, they often find that staying busy is just as much fun. Every month of the year offers something new for travelers to enjoy. From boating and fishing events to site-seeing, sun bathing and dining, the villages of The Keys offer an almost endless variety of things to do.
2. BATHE IN SUNSHINE The sandy public beaches of The Keys, offer boardwalks, shady picnic areas, access to fun in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean and most importantly, restrooms. There is room for sand castle building, water sports, and chances for youngsters to scoop up and observe marine specimens until it is time to release them. Freshwater showers help keep beachgoers comfortable at the end of the day. 4. TAKE TIME TO BE AMAZED With over 3000 reefs from Key Largo to Key West, finding a perfect spot to see these fascinating natural wonders is easy. A good place to start is the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. www.pennekamppark.com
1. EAT WELL. With the bounty of fresh seafood available, it’s not surprising that the cuisine of The Keys is largely built around the catch of the day. Located in the heart of The Keys, Pierre’s Restaurant is set amidst a glorious, palmlined beach overlooking blue waters, with walking paths thru tropical flowers and a thatched forest. “Florida Travel & Life” magazine named their Chef, Benjamin Loftus, one of the top 13 chefs not to miss. www.pierres-restaurant.com 3. APPRECIATE NATURE It is easy to spend all day at The Theater of the Sea. They have shows, snorkel charters, a private beach and pools to swim with bottlenosed dolphins, sea lions and sting rays. It is home to wild and exotic birds, lizards and crocodilians. www.theaterofthesea.com
5. GO FISHING One of the most popular destinations in the Upper Keys is Holiday Isle. The resort is known for its incredible offshore Florida Keys fishing charters at Postcard Inn Marina. From Sailfish to Mahi Mahi, fishing with our knowledgeable Captains will give you a great fishing experience in the Florida Keys. www.holidayisle.com/islamorada-fishing
