After playing the next seven holes at one-over par, McCumber headed to the 17th hole tied for the lead. His approach would sail over the green, and after an excelTyler McCumber, 2011 Amateur Champion lent pitch shot McCumber would make par on 17 to hold a one-stroke lead heading into the difficult 18th hole. “I finally looked at a leader board after 17, and I knew I had the lead”, McCumber stated. After his approach shot on 18 found the right greenside bunker, McCumber left his par putt short and was left with a difficult 6 footer to finish at one-under par on the day. “I knew I had to make my bogey putt, the last thing I wanted to do was lose two shots on the final hole”, McCumber stated. After making bogey to fire a final round oneunder par 71, Ben Vertz and Ryan Abbate would go on to make bogey and triple bogey, respectively, for McCumber to capture the title.

Perry Wins Florida Open
Peaper Captures Low Amateur Honors Rod Perry prevailed in a playoff to win the 65th Florida Open Championship at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, on July 15-17. Rod Perry, of Port Orange, outlasted the field of 156 players to capture the 65th Florida Open Championship. Perry carded another solid round on the Quarry course, with a three-under par 69, to find himself tied for the lead heading into the final round of play. In the final round, Perry played a perfect round of golf with three birdies and no bogeys to post a three-under par 69 for a tournament total of 10-under par 206. Alan Morin, of Royal Palm Beach, posted rounds of 69-69-68, which included a clutch birdie on the final hole of regulation for a tournament total of 10-under par 206, to force a three hole aggregate playoff with Perry. The three hole aggregate playoff would be played on holes 18, 1 and 9. Perry would birdie the par 5 18th hole, and make par on holes 1 and 9 to capture his first Florida Open Championship and the $12,000 check. Perry, who currently works out of Daytona Beach Golf Club, stated “I played solid all day hitting every green in regulation; I knew Alan would make a move today, he is a great player and I have the utmost respect for him. Perry stated “It was unfortunate what happened to Alan on the first playoff hole, he only made two bogeys in 54-holes, so for him to make an eight was out of the ordinary. After my birdie on the first playoff hole, I just wanted to hit fairways and greens on the final two holes”. “This is the biggest victory of my career. With the history behind this event, I am happy to have my name associated with the other great Champions” said Perry. Rod Perry (top), 2011 Florida Open Champion Brant Peaper (bottom), Low Amateur
Taking home low Amateur honors was Brant Peaper, of Tequesta, who finished tied for fourth place with a tournament total of six-under par 210. Peaper, currently a junior at the University of Indiana, posted rounds of 66-75-69.

Suspension of Play by Jack Pultorak, FSGA Director of Rules and Competitions Very often in Florida the threat of inclement weather causes the Committee to suspend play signaled by a horn or siren until it is safe to resume. Here’s what you need to know about what to do under the Rules of Golf. The Florida State Golf Association and the USGA as well as a majority of other state and regional associations put into effect the Note to Rule 6-8b that says “in potentially dangerous situations play must be discontinued immediately following suspension of play by the Committee.” In other words, stop immediately! Do not play another single stroke. You have the option of marking the position of your ball and lifting it or leaving it there. Either way, you should mark its position by placing a tee or tees (or anything else you have handy that you may not get back) in or on the ground to identify its position. Also, make a note of where your ball is; for example, 143 yards to the center of the green and six paces in from the edge of the rough or 12 paces from the hole on the left side of the green and five paces from the edge. Then head for shelter! The Committee may direct you to a shelter on the course or may have players and spectators head for the clubhouse or some other sturdy structure nearby. After that, all you can do is wait until the Committee says it’s safe to resume. It may be in 30 minutes, an hour or the next day; whatever the Committee says. And while you’re waiting, don’t think about going out and practicing on the putting green. All practice areas are closed until the Committee says they are open. Once you do get the go ahead to resume, head back out to where your ball was and see if you can find the spot where it originally lay. Hopefully, whatever you used to mark the ball’s location is still there. If you are resuming the next day, your tees or marker may have been moved by mowers or the maintenance staff or even by Mother Nature herself. If you chose not to lift your ball and you do find your ball upon resumption, you may: • play it as it lies, or • lift it, clean it, and replace it on the spot, or • you may go ahead and substitute a new ball by placing it on the spot If you chose not to lift your ball and you do not find your ball, you may substitute a ball by estimating its original position and placing a ball on that spot. If you chose to lift your ball, you may replace the original ball or you may substitute a ball by placing it on the spot where the original ball lay. If the tees or marker marking the position of your ball are no longer there, you may estimate its original location and either replace the original ball or substitute a ball by placing it on that estimated position. In any case, when resuming play, you will always place your ball and not drop it. After that, you’re back playing golf! Remember, use the index or the table of contents to find the correct Rule that applies to the situation and follow the Rules of Golf to help yourself to enjoy the game of golf.
