Exciting golf highlighted the Round of 16 and Quarterfinal Matches played on Saturday. Five of the eight matches were determined on the 18th hole, including two matches that needed 20 holes to find a winner. Fourth seed, Matthew Lemma, advanced to the Quarterfinals after 20 holes against Brian Keenan, who played 22 holes to reach the Round of 16. Latowski faced 20 holes against Hopkins to continue to the Quarterfinals. Impressive golf came from two-time Champion, Steve Carter, who took down stroke play medalist, Barbosa, 1-up. A clutch 18 foot putt on the final hole from Nikhil DeSai allowed him to beat 1999 Champion, Joe Alfieri, 1-up. Vero Beach local, Ryan Cobb, ended his match play journey after TJ Shuart advanced 2 and 1. In the Quaterfinals, Latowski faced Carter and the pair halved the first six holes with all pars. An eagle on the seventh hole brought Latowski to 1-up along with giving him momentum to card birdies on holes 9, 12, and 14 and secure a spot in the Semifinals. Lemma never trailed in his match and made the turn at 3-up. An eagle on 14 and birdie on 15 earned Lemma a 4 and 3 win against DeSai. Badz was 4-up through 10 holes when Osborn brought forth the heat making an eagle on the par four, 11th hole and birdies on holes 14 and 15. The match sat at all square on the 18th green where the two both made pars and continued to play the first hole for the third time that day. Badz advanced to the semifinals after a par on the par three, second, their 20th hole. TJ Shuart defeated fellow South Floridian, Daniel Eggertsson, 2 and 1 due to his steady play. The Semifinals saw Latowski defeat Lemma 3 and 2 and Shuart win 7 and 6 against Badz. Latowski would go head to head against past champion, Shuart, in the Finals. After a birdie on the first hole, Latowski took the early lead. Latowski made the turn 2-up and held onto his lead approaching the finishing holes. Shuart came back to win holes 13, 14, 17, and 18 to take the match to all square. Shuart’s birdie on the 18th hole extended the match to extra holes to determine the champion. On the 20th hole, Shuart missed the green short right, chipping on to 30 feet. Latowski hit his approach shot on the fringe and left himself with an eight foot putt for par. Both players made bogey extending the match to the 21st hole, par five number three. Shuart and Latowski laid-up and hit their approach shots ten yards short of the green with a false front. On the 21st hole, Latowski left himself with five feet for par while Shuart closed in on the hole with a six-inch par putt. Latowski missed his putt and Shuart sunk his putt for par to seize his second Mid-Amateur Championship victory.

CHAMPIONSHIP RECAPS

WOMEN’S SHOOT-OUT CHAMPIONSHIP

Piper’s Landing Yacht & Country Club | Palm City | May 18 - 19 After the inaugural championship in 2018 was canceled due to heavy rains, the Women’s Shoot-Out went back to Piper’s Landing Yacht & Country Club to give it another try. What is now considered the inaugural championship, featured beautiful weather and playing conditions all weekend giving way to the eventual crowning of the first ever Women’s Shoot-Out Champions, Patsy Ehret and Nadia Luttner. The championship began on Saturday with teams competing in a scramble format. The round one leader was the team of Debbie Mooksang and Sandie St. Onge, who posted a score of 2-under 70. Only one shot back was our eventual champions, Ehret and Luttner. Mooksang and St. Onge made a total of four birdies to help them hold the overnight lead, while Ehret and Nadia had four birdies and one bogey to finish just one shot back. Ehret and Luttner came back from behind during Sunday’s final round four-ball. After carding a birdie on the par-3 seventh hole, Ehret and Luttner would finish their round with only two bogeys to secure their victory by one stroke with tournament rounds of 71-73--144. Mooksang and St. Onge posted a four-ball score of 75 to finish the weekend 1-over. In the Middle Division, the team of Jennie Taylor and Kerstin Koenig carded the lowest round of the weekend, a 3-under par, 69. To top it off, Jennie Taylor made a hole-in-one on the par-3 13th to go along with the team’s two birdies. This left them tied with the teams of Gordon and Nogueira, and Nagel and Nagel after round one. The three teams all carded rounds of 69 during Saturday’s scramble. It was during Sunday’s four-ball that Taylor and Koenig secured their win. The team carded a 2-over 74 to win the Middle Division by two strokes. In the Middle Division First Flight, Liz Boudreaux and Paula Holmes secured an eight-stroke victory with team scores of 75-78--153.

Who is eligible? • 18 years or younger • FJT level member or higher • $10 for the session, and $45 if you have already completed one in the same calendar year How will they work? • Maximum of 12 juniors per day • Times every half hour, from 7:30 AM until 1:00 PM • Combine takes roughly 30-40 minutes to complete • After combine is done, juniors will complete a short video interview
