Women’s International Four-Ball The Wanderers Club in Wellington was in pristine condition for the 70th Women’s International Four-Ball conducted February 14-15. This historic Championship has been hosted by The Wanderers Club, one of the finest clubs in Palm Beach County, for five consecutive years! The ladies faced perfect weather during round one on Tuesday, resulting in ten scores in the red. In the Championship Division, the competitive duo of Charlotte Daughan and Katie Miller took the early lead looking to capture their second consecutive win! Miller, of Jeannette, Pennsylvania, and Daughan, of Orlando, posted an impressive seven under-par for a three stroke lead over the team of Lin Culver and Gigi Higgins. Miller has proven to be an exceptional four-ball partner and recently qualified for the 2017 U.S. Women’s Four-Ball with Aurora Kan. A total of seven birdies were recorded between the duo, with Daughan posting three birdies and Miller carding four for a 32-33-65 round one score. The team of Culver and Higgins had a bogey free round to take second place heading into round two. The two close friends finished tied for fourth last year and came together on Tuesday for a true team effort. Higgins, the 2016 Women’s Senior Player of the Year from Cape Coral, counted nine of her scores while Culver, of Palm Coast, counted nine of her scores for a round one 68 (-4). To round out the top three after the first round, Sherry Herman and Debbi Adams carded four birdies on holes 1, 4, 11, and 12. Herman, of Middletown, NJ, and Adams, of Asheville, NC, were the only out of state team in the top three with a round one three under-par 69. A birdie putt rolled in on the first hole to start Daughan and Miller’s final round on Wednesday. The defending Champions continued their strong start with birdies on holes 5, 8, 11, 13, and 16 to go 35-33 for a final round 68 and second consecutive first place title! The duo had great vibes heading into the tournament as Miller stated it was “wonderful coming to Florida to play off of real grass” and “the course and staff are always really nice”. As explained by the Champions, “putts just seemed to go in” and a win was a great way to start 2017! Daughan and Miller worked off of each other both rounds of the tournament to finish with a 133 (-11) total and four stroke victory. The team from Palm Beach, Tara Joy-Connelly and Susan Cohn, made a comeback in the second round to finish in second place. Tara, being a past Champion with former teammate Meghan Stasi, had six birdies with Susan to finish at 137 (70-67) seven under-par! Culver and Higgins started the final round in second place but fell to a fourth place finish after a final round 75 for a 143 (-1) total. The team of Herman and Adams achieved a top three finish with two rounds in the red (6971) for a 140 (-4) total. See fsga.org for full results.
Senior/Mid-Am Four-Ball Championship The Senior/Mid-Amateur Four-Ball Championship is a where two men, one 25-54 years old and the other 55 and over, and compete in a “best ball” format over two days. This year the Championship headed to the wonderful layout at Juliette Falls which is located in Dunnellon, about 20 minutes west of Ocala. The favorites heading into the weekend had to be the team of Marc Dull and Bob Levy. Dull was the runner-up at the 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur, has represented Florida at the U.S. State Team Championship, and is one the best ranked mid-amateurs in Florida. Levy is a very accomplished senior who mas made deep runs in past match play championships and strong finishes in several other senior events. The Dull/Levy partnership came out strong in round one posting a 65 (-7) that was tied for the lead with the duo of Daniel Eggertsson and Craig Howell. Eggertsson and Howell are also very accomplished amateurs. Eggertsson qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur in 2016 and also has many great finishes in other FSGA competitions. Howell had some great finishes including a win in a SW Amateur Series event. Paired in the final round together, these two teams would go head-to-head for the title. There were many teams chasing them, but they were focused on beating each other. Both teams would make three birdies on the front nine to turn at 33 (-3). Then, a two-shot swing on the par 5-11th after Dull/Levy made bogey and Eggertsson/Howell made a birdie. Levy would rebound on the par 4 12th with a birdie putting them only down one stroke. Then a costly bogey on the par 3 13th by Dull/ Levy would put them two shots back once again. A birdie on the 18th by Levy wasn’t enough as Howell made par for a one stroke victory for and the first title for the Eggertsson and Howell as partners. Hole-In-One: In the first round, Kyle Thomas made an ace on the par 3 13th! The ace helped their side (Kyle Thomas & Greg Ellis) finished tied for second place. See fsga.org for full results.
Men’s Interclub Championship The Country Club Club at Silver Springs Shores dominated the 2017 Men’s Interclub Team Championship at Ocala National Golf Club in Ocala. After six weeks of matches followed by two rounds of playoffs, Silver Spring Shores outlasted eight other Regional Champions to be crowned the Men’s Interclub State Champions in their hometown. The State Championship saw all but one new team in the field this year competing for the title of Interclub Champions. During Tuesday’s round, Ocala National greeted players with sunny skies. West region Champions and Ocala natives, Silver Spring Shores, earned a two stroke lead after a round one 211 team total. Cypress Lakes Country Club of Fort Myers trailed in second place by four strokes (207 total) followed by Julington Creek and Tampa Palms (203 totals) tied for third. The player with the highest stableford points came from the first place team. Dale Hogsten from Silver Spring Shores boosted his team with 41 points! Robert Dyer of Heron Creek and Tom Bean of Cypress Lakes earned the second highest individual total with 39! Silver Spring Shores never let go of their lead and posted 203 points in the final round to win by eight points over the defending champions Julington Creek! Congratulations to the members of the Championship team from the West Region: Steve Bowen, Perry Crenshaw, Buddy Fudge, Dale Hogsten, Roger Hogsten, Joe Reyes, Philip Yancey, and Bill Zylstra. Women’s Four-Ball Championship Unlike the wild thunderstorms that crashed the 2016 Women’s Four-Ball Championship, sunny skies and a cool breeze made for perfect playing conditions for the 2017 Championship. The Women’s Four-Ball Championship, hosted by Santa Lucia River Club for the second consecutive year, began Saturday morning with an 8:30 AM shotgun start. Partners Kim Keyer-Scott and Margaret Ference came out firing an impressive four-under par 68 to sit in first place by one stroke over junior duo Elle Nachmann and Dana Williams. The teams of Meghan Stasi/Tara Bolger and Mary Jane Hiestand/Marie Arnoux sat tied for third with a pair of 70’s. Sunday’s final round began at 8:30 AM with identical playing conditions and more red numbers. The team of Meghan Stasi and younger sister Tara Bolger, kept up their hot streak and posted a one-under par-71 to finish the tournament with a two day total of three-under 141. Keyer-Scott and Ference also played consistently throughout the day, finishing with a 73, but both teams were no match for Nachmann and Williams who continued their red streak by posting a one-under par 71 and capturing the title by one stroke with a four-under par finish at 140. The Women’s Four-Ball Championship marks both Nachmann and Williams’ first Florida State Golf Association Championship wins. Elle Nachmann will be graduating high school in 2021 and Dana Williams in 2019. See fsga.org for full results.
Women’s Senior Amateur Championship The top senior women competed in two rounds of stroke play at Fort Lauderdale Country Club to determine who would be crowned Senior Amateur Champion. The Championship division saw a tight leaderboard after round one with Taffy Brower capturing the lead by one stroke. Brower, of Boynton Beach, is a tough competitor who not only won the Senior Amateur Championship in 2008, but was inducted into the FSGA Hall of Fame in 2014. Taffy played a consistent round of golf carding three bogies and a birdie for a 38-36--74. Following close behind Brower’s two over-par, was Laura Carson and Anita Venner tied for second at three over-par. A pair of 77’s from Sarah Phillips-Durst and Kathy Glennon moved them to a tie for fourth place heading into the final round. A change in the leaderboard occurred after round two when Sarah Phillips-Durst overcame a three stroke deficit to steal first place. Phillips-Durst, of Tallahassee, carded the tournament low, one over-par 73, to win her first FSGA Championship by one stroke! Three birdies in her final round propelled Sarah to a 150 total and victory! Vero Beach resident, Laura Carson, carded back to back birdies on holes four and five to finish in second place alone with a 151 total. Past Players’ of the Year, Gigi Higgins and Taffy Brower, finished tied for third with a 153 total. Brower struggled to a round two 79 while Higgins reversed Brower’s rounds carding a 79-74. 2015 Champion, Lisa Schlesinger, and 2016 Champion, Mary Jane Hiestand, tied with Kathy Glennon for sixth place (156 total). Reggie Parker, who was crowned Amateur Champion 10 years ago, held a strong seven stroke lead after round one in the Super-Senior division. Parker, of Hobe Sound, fired a consistent 38-38 for a four over-par 76. 2015 Super-Senior Champion, Nancy Chaffee, stood solo in second place with a round one-83. Parker’s lead could not be broken in round two. Despite Chaffee and Parker posting the same score of 81 in the final round, Reggie never let her seven stroke lead falter. Parker was crowned wire-to-wire Champion with a 157 total followed by Nancy Chaffee, of Avon Park, in second place at 164. Vilma Sapp, of Weston, shot identical rounds of 84 to round out the top three. See fsga.org for full results.

Super-Senior Championship Stormy weather rolled through Howey-in-the-Hills during round one causing a four-hour rain delay that tested the patience of the players. Despite the wet conditions, two players in the 65-69 age division tied for the early lead at even par 72. Michael Bell, of Sarasota, and Berger Warner, of Ocala, led by two strokes over defending Champion, Robert Hess. There was a break through the clouds on Wednesday morning at Mission Inn Resort that seemed to help break the tie for first place. Bell, who was playing his first FSGA Championship, carded a second round 76 to slide into first by one stroke. Warner fell just short with a 77 while Robert Lundquist carded the round two low with a 74, to head into the final round in third place. A birdie jump started the final round for Michael Bell who went on to card three more birdies and finish with an even par 72. A 220 tournament total earned Bell a four-stroke victory in his first FSGA Championship! Bell started the Championship with an even par round and finished with an even par round for his wireto-wire win. Robert Lundquist, of Sanford, bettered his score each round to finish tied for second place with Berger Warner. Lundquist scored an impressive eagle on the par five 10th hole followed by two more birdies to finish with a 73. Warner shot a final round 75 to tie for second with a 224 tournament total. Three players: Jim Stone, Robert Hess, and William Everett, tied for fourth place with a 229 total. The storms washed out round one for the 70-74 and 75 and over age divisions. Wednesday started round one of the Championship for the two age divisions. Thomas Austin, of Lake Wales, led the 70-74 division with a one over-par 73 but the leaderboard was tight behind him. Jim Carley and Thomas Jung tied for second two strokes away with Earl Daniell and Fred Gross tied for fourth place with a 76. Past 70-74 division Champion, Jim Pfrogner, stood in the lead after round one with a three over-par 75. Two strokes behind sat Joseph DeVita who was ready to chase the lead in the final round. Earl Daniell, of Tallahassee, overcame a three stroke deficit to climb into first place in the 70-74 division. Daniell carded two birdies on the front nine and one birdie on the back nine to shoot a final round 74. A 65-69 age division Champion in 2013, Daniell, reigned victorious by one stroke with a 150 total. Thomas Austin struggled to a 78 in round two and finished in second place with a 151 total. In the 75 and over division, Jim Pfrogner, of Sarasota, went wire-to-wire to win by two strokes. Pfrogner finished with a 79 and 154 total. Tampa resident, Phil Leckey, shot four strokes better in round two to move from fifth to second place, 80-76—156. See fsga.org for full results.
Senior Amateur Championship In his first FSGA event and at his home club, George DeSear made a furious late charge to capture the 56th Senior Amateur Championship. Sitting alone in 10th place after two rounds, DeSear was able overcome a five shot deficit. The final round began with Bret Voisin holding the lead after excellent rounds of 70-71. Voisin found himself at one under par and leading 2013 Senior Amateur Champion, Doug LaCrosse and Robert Polk by one shot. Voisin was unable to hold onto his lead as he started the final round with a few blemishes. LaCrosse and Polk were steady as they each played the opening nine with eight pars and a birdie to share the lead as they made the turn. Also making a push was Sarasota resident, Jerry Rose. Rose birdied his opening hole, to go along with two more birdies on the front nine, but was unable to sustain the momentum as he bogeyed three holes down the stretch. Notably, Thursday saw two players record a one on their score cards as Bob Levy aced the 165 yard, 2nd hole and Mike Bodney, of Jacksonville, conquered the 185 yard, 18th. DeSear, after a slow start including a bogey on the par-four 5th, and a double bogey on number 7, birdied the par-five 8th to get his round moving in the right direction. Consecutive birdies on holes 12 and 13 vaulted DeSear into contention but a bogey on 15 halted that momentum. A par on the 16th hole meant that DeSear would need something special on the final two holes and he delivered with another two birdies, the closing birdie in front of a large crowd of members that had gathered to show their support. With this victory, DeSear has earned himself an exemption into the next ten Senior Amateur Championships, the next two Florida Senior Open Championships, as well as the 100th Amateur Championship and the 2017 Mid-Amateur Championship. Become an FSGA Volunteer The Florida State Golf Association is proud to have one of the largest and finest volunteer based golf associations in the country. FSGA Committee Members act as tournament volunteers and/or course rating volunteers. There are many volunteers that participate in both and help us a great deal. Tournament Committee Members help administer over 500 days of competition each year, including 38 state-level championships and over 45 days of USGA qualifying. Tournament officials are designated, based upon their experience, as General Committee Members, Rules Officials or Tournament Chairman. At each event, there is a Tournament Chairman who is responsible for the overall administration of the event, including course set-up and coordination of other Committee Members. Rules Officials are experienced in officiating and are highly knowledgeable in the Rules of Golf. General Committee Members assist with starting, scoring, pace-of-play checkpoints, and general roving on the course. Course Rating Committee Members serve the golfers of Florida by systematically rating the state’s 1,300 golf courses. Our Committee Members follow strict USGA guidelines for rating each course. A course must first be accurately measured, and then obstacles that affect playing difficulty are evaluated in accordance with established standards. Typically, teams of 5-6 individuals spend over five hours making measurements and statistical calculations necessary to produce a course and slope rating. If you have any questions or would like to receive any additional information please contact Tracy Dachisen at 813-868-5816 or tracy@fsga.org.

“How the Rules Address Sodded Areas and Sod Seams” By Jack Pultorak - Director of Rules & Competitions
This time of year we tend to see a lot of freshly sodded areas on the course. The transition in Florida from the cooler weather varieties of grass used to overseed courses back to the Bermuda grass can leave areas of turf that need to be repaired. Other areas of the course may have been damaged by anything from construction projects to grass diseases to pest infestation. One way the maintenance staff addresses the situation is to put down patches of sod. The Committee, or person in charge of the course, has a few different options on how to address the situation. Since this condition is normally temporary in nature, the Rules of Golf allow a Local Rule to be introduced as a result. If the situation is such that the maintenance department wants to keep golfers off of the newly sodded area, the area can be declared Ground Under Repair from which Play is Prohibited. In this case, you get a free drop if your ball lies in or on the area, your stance is in or on the area, or your area of intended swing is interfered with by the sodded area. On the putting green, you will also get free relief if the sodded area intervenes on your line of putt, in which case you will place your ball at the nearest spot, no nearer the hole, where your line of putt avoids the sodded area. If the sod has sufficiently taken hold, the Committee, or person in charge of the course, may introduce a Local Rule that would only give you relief if your ball were to lie in one of the sod seams; not in the middle of the sod square. Also, relief may be denied for your stance as well. In this case, you may only be getting free relief half of the time. The sample language for this Local Rule is hidden in Appendix I in the back of the Rule Book. Here is the text: “Through the green, seams of cut turf (not the turf itself) are deemed to be ground under repair. However, interference by a seam with the player’s stance is deemed not to be, of itself, interference under Rule 25-1. If the ball lies in or touches the seam or the seam interferes with the area of intended swing, relief is available under Rule 25-1. All seams within the cut turf area are considered the same seam. The next time your ball is in a sod seam, it may not be as bad as it seems! Remember, knowing and following the Rules of Golf can assist you in avoiding unnecessary penalties and help you to enjoy this great game of golf even more.
Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship Ina Kim, of Jupiter, began her first FSGA Championship with an impressive three underpar 69 to take the lead after round one. 2015 Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion, Tara Joy-Connelly, lurked close behind with an even par 72. Kim Benedict rounded out the top three heading into the final round with a one over-par score. Three players were tied for fourth after round one at 74 including defending Champion Meghan Stasi. Excitement took place in round two when Stasi, of Oakland Park, came from behind with a three under-par 69 to tie Ina Kim for the lead. Kim posted a second round 74 and sat tied for first with a 143 (-1) total. Stasi played consistently both rounds carding four birdies each day and entered the play-off with confidence. The duo headed to the 18th hole to battle for the crystal. Ina carded an easy par with Stasi had to make a tough four-foot putt to keep the play-off alive. With two pars, Stasi and Kim headed back to the 18th tee box for the last time as Stasi drained a 30-foot putt from above the hole to be crowned back-toback Champion. Stasi has won every Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship she has competed in and stated that this victory is a “Good jump start to the summer to get the game in check.” See fsga.org for full results.

Two-Man Shoot-Out Round one began early Saturday morning on the Wee Friendly Course with the modified alternate shot format. Both players on a team hit drives, one drive is selected, and the two then play alternate shot into the hole. Two teams got off to a quick start and sat tied for first after round one. Bob Campione, of Palm Coast, and Steve Carter, of Saint Augustine, tied the team of Luke Farmer, of Estero, and Shane Reynolds, of Fort Myers, with threeunder-par 69. Following close behind at one-under-par 70 was the team of Ben Adelberg and Ben Finley. The teams were back at it Saturday afternoon on the Long Mean Course for round two and the two-man scramble format. Four teams tied for the low round of the afternoon portion with nine-under-par 63, including first round coleaders Luke Farmer and Shane Reynolds. The duo of Campione/Carter was unable to keep pace, firing a second round 65 that left them two shots back in a tie for second with Adelberg/Finley (134 two round total) heading into Sunday’s final round. The final round was contested on the Long Mean Course in four-ball, or best ball of two, format. While Campione and Carter made a valiant effort, recording a final round five-underpar 67, they were no match for the overnight leaders. Farmer and Reynolds held strong firing a final round 68 for a 200 tournament total to claim the title. The low round of the day, eightunder-par 64, came from the duo of Jim Marcelak and Jake Johnson. Their final round score was the best by three and vaulted the team to a top ten finish. The win marks the first FSGA Championship title for either Farmer or Reynolds and their first as a team. See fsga.org for full results.
Mid-Amateur Championship Robert Bechtol and Tyler Shook took the course after both battling through challenging 20 hole semifinal matches. After a pair of bogeys on 1 & 2 by Shook, Bechtol would find himself with a quick 2-up lead, and would never give it up en route to the championship. The exciting match saw Bechtol never in a position worse than 1 up, and only 4 halved holes (3, 4, 10 & 11). Down the stretch, Bechtol stepped onto the 14th tee with a 3 up lead. A pair of bogeys would have that lead trimmed to just 1 up after Shook converted pars on both 14 & 15. Shook would then three-putt from the front of 16 green, moving Bechtol to dormie 2 up. On the par-5, 17th, both players went for the green in two. Bechtol came up short, and failed to get up and down for birdie, while Shook would hit his second to 12 feet and just need a two putt birdie continue the match. On the 18th, Shook’s tee shot ran just through fairway and found the fairway bunker, while Bechtol split the fairway and then stuck the approach to 4 feet. After Shook’s second out of the fairway bunker flew the green into the sand dune and the players briefly searched, Shook conceded the hole, giving Bechtol a 2 up victory and the Championship. Before advancing to the match play portion of the Championship, Bechtol fired back to back rounds of 72 to earn the 10th seed. Enroute to the Championship, Bechtol defeated: Drew Mathews, 2 up, Cameron Knight, 5 & 3, Miles McConnell, 4 & 3 and Joe Alferi in 20 holes. See fsga.org for full results.
