CONTEMPORARY ART CENTER 2013 6th year project The site is placed at the intersection of the Somesului street and Lalelelor street, near the Abator square. Coming from the historic center, you have to follow the Somes river through the Mihai Viteazu Square, and then along the Iasilor street and Somesului street. An esential element of the site is being on the Somes river shore. The route of the river is occupied by the private properties that are organized toward the streets, and disposing the technical utilities toward the shore of the river. The new PUG propose the liberation of the shores and by doing that, creating an interesting public circulation. It will atract more people in this zone, that right now is badly integrated in the urban tissue, and it will provide access to a valuable natural element, the river itself. A promenade along the Somes river, will create a link between the center of the town, passing through Mihai Vitezu square, and the Feroviarilor park, a green place that today is isolated behind the Abator square (no conections, and lack of accesibility toward the center of the town). The park will get a more proeminent role on the map of the city and would be linked to public functions for generating public utilisation. This new improved public route along the river would be the ideal place for developing functions that atract the people that passes by. Starting from functions of local interest, like the comercial ones, and the public alimentation one. But the potential of the zone would be exploited by functions with bigger relevance for the town itself, functions generating a widely public interest and an advertising for the entire zone. A center of art would be such a function. A cultural core that provides spaces for the specialized functions, but along that, spaces with a wider public utility, and by placing them here, providing the accesibility and the public utilisations that will help the center work as a public entity and as a public space.

3 The center is organized in 2 distinct parts, placed paralell, one along the Somesului street, the other on the north side as an opposite shape, creating a space between, a continuum of the public space inside the property of the center. The south volume is high P+2 (17.00 meters) according to the urban regulation. The nordic volume is similar, with the exception of a raised part that occupy the blind wall of the neighbor residential building. Between the 2 volumes, there are 2 suspended links, 2 volumes that are levitating, one at the 3rd level toward the Lalelelor street, and the other at the 4th level toward the river shore.

The assembly generate a double faced image, creates a protective inner space , and at the same time, by the suspended movement a fluent continuity between the outer public space to the inner public space of the art center. The different vertical disposal of the linking volume, creates an asymetrical composition, and visually organize the courtyard toward the pedestrian river promenade. The volume composition is a reflection of the functional organisation, with the 2 based volumes containing one the main function, the exhibition spaces, and the other, a multifunctional hall with all his auxiliary spaces. The linking volumes, one containg the workshop artistic spaces, the other, a mediateque and a panoramic bar. The administration occupy the raised part on the blind wall.

The organisation of the art center around an inner public space, bring inside the visitors by intermediate steps, first they enter the sculpture courtyard that acts as a first taste of the exhibiting function; then they enter at the ground level where they get information and see a seccond wave of artefacts. They ascend through the 2 volumes, discovering the exhibitions, both in static or in a dinamic shape (the hall as a more dinamic and efemeral form of art). The glazed ground level appearance, act as an invitation discovering the comercial and the more mondain functions.

FACULTY OF DRAMATIC ARTS

Team: Florin Gavrilas & Adrian Nechita 5th year project The theme was to conceive a faculty of theater in the center area of Cluj-Napoca, on the site of a previous military institution. In the same park with a historic monument, one of the XVIII century building of the city. After the urban analysis, we introduce on the project site 2 new street, one wich to permit a better auto circulation, one pedestrian, to favorise the acces and the creation of a public space around the faculty required. It was a chalenge to modify the long established historic trama. From the same historic considerations, the volumetry was considered as dual faced one, for the “exterior street view” we adopted a method adaptative to the existing atmosphere and to the historic articulations of the nearby buildings; for the “interior view”, the park view, we adopted a more organic method, with a modern language of elements. The street facade is reinterpretating the rhythm of the windows of the old caserne, while the park facade is working with rounded lacing of glass. The most important space of the building was the entry foyer, so it was here that we focus on achieving a higly spectacular atmosphere, between the monumental helical stair, the glazed atrium, and the dark cube of the studio hall. The studio hall was conceived as a flexible space, adapting to the needs af the contemporary theater. The mobile scene of the hall provides an easy and effective way to transport the sets and the objects needed for different theater shows.

ATHLETIC HALL

Team: Florin Gavrilas & Adrian Nechita 5th year project A sport hall for the cold season, mainly for athletic events, but flexible to adapt for other categories of sport, for music events as well. The concept of this project is directly related to the site chosen: it is a green area near the city, with the presence of the town river Somes, and the hill and the Hoia forest in the proximity. This natural environment being the major player of the composition, we adopted a method to interpret the curved line of it in the shape of our proposed volumetry. A green wave that is oriented along the river, toward the city, and according to the dominant winds of the site, as a metaphor of the shaped hills around, and also as a symbol of the dynamic movement of the running athletes. At the interior, along the monumentality of the sports hall itself, a very large opening thanks to the impresive dimensions of the athletic track, we concentrate on the entry foyer, a high and glazed space oriented toward the city, a space structured by the presence of the cantilevered levels of the games area and of the restaurant facilities. Solving the different needed circulations was one of the big task of the project. We used the ground level floor for the sportives and officials circulation (all the facilities that the regulations specify) and the suspended above floor for the entry and the circulation of the spectators. Even the stands for the public are accessed at this level. The above levels alow access to the public games area and to the restaurant and its facilities.

From the engineering point, the big chalenge is finding a fit structure that can solve the mechanical weights of such a large size opening building. We adopted for covering the athletic track and stands space a spatial methalic structure, that discharge its load on perimeter reinforced concrete piling.

BORHANCI RESORT

The hotel project was part of a school project of developing an urban center in the proximity of Cluj-Napoca, an urban project that was first discussed in the 80’s. Along the hotel, our school project provides a commercial center, an office tower, a nursing home. We developed the part of the hotel; one of the task was to use a single building and not a pavilion ensemble. The capacity of the hotel (number of rooms) was also designated. The concrete chosen structure permits the needed flexibility for such an architectural program, that houses the guest rooms area, but also a restaurant with all the auxiliary facilities, a casino, 2 conference halls, and a swimming pool. As a composition concept, the project played with the geometric relations between big, sharp rectangular volumes and a rhythm of oblique cuts in it. The main suspended volume is structured by a chain of rectangular asymetrical waves that creates a dynamic image in a clear framework, waves that reverbs in the base volume by altering the shape of the sloped roof, and by the presence of strong cuts in this base volume. The sloped natural area in wich the hotel is emerged is in this way reflected in the image of the building. Using deep cuts for conceiving the project volumetry was intended as a part of achieving a masive architectural object, a visual strong and heavy one. HOUSE ON DESCARTE STREET The site is located on a street of low level residential building. A small surface of terain, a retraction from the front at the street, were the first two constraints of the project. The main goal of the conceptual process was to obtain an arhitectural volume, while providing a low energy house. First, the compact shape is used for minimizing the exterior shell exposed to the change of energy inside-outside. Second, the different angle of the slope roof is used to maximize the space of the attic, while obtaining a better angle for solar instalation. The north oriented slope is almost horizontal, as the south oriented slope roof is highly angled. Third, the vegetation is used to facilitate a better environment in the house, especially in the living area, offering natural light filter in the summer and less opacity in the winter. Fourth, the natural vantilation system, with a central chimney facilitate a better climate inside the house, and the solar panels provides an alternative source of energy. 5th year project

RESIDENCE ON DRAGALINA STREET The concept of the project is based on the conection between repetition and difference. A row of collective residential buildings that form an ensemble, as an image as well as functional. A repetition of modules from the same shape family, related but not identical. The result offers aesthetic advantages as well as pragmathical ones. Offers visual diversity, psichological highlights for visitors and for residents also. The volumes are the result of a mechanical perception of deformation, between Pulling, Pushing, on the horizontal or vertical axes. A rectangular constant shape, a parallelepiped, that reacts under mechanical stress. From this rhythm of volume, last unit is particular. Is more different because it is placed in a privileged position, is a signal of the ensemble seen from the center urban area; is a volume divided by the main pedestrian circulation that acces the residential building are and also that acces the whole public park of the sloped area. Dividing was the best volume creating aproach for the entire ensemble due to the previous analysis of the terain; the geological structure of the terrain cannot sustain a continous shape, and is favorable to isolated forms along the street. Building this kind of volumes is achieved using rectangular constant volumes on concrete structure, enveloped in a metal structure that varies according to the desired shaped to be obtained. Using as balconies, these different sizes of exterior spaces are enveloped in wood mobile panels, that act as envirenment friendly skin and as dynamic filter of the light. Team:

STUDENT CENTER

A student center, to facilitate the extracurricular activities, spaces for different student organisations, entertainment and conference room. Located in the historic center of the town, a site with valuable patrimony architectural monuments, the project proposes a dialogue with the nearby existing architecture, using for the exterior language an adequate vocabulary: as materials, type of facades composition. For the interior, the buidling sugests a system organised as a circular promenade around an inner atrium, that is natural illuminated. The vector of the spiral mouvement across the spaces of the center and around the central void, finds an architectural continuity in the complex shaped glass roof, as a modern counterpart to the clasical language used for the street level exterior. For the people passing on street, the image of the center adapt to the image of the historic urban area; from the higher area of the town, the high-tech roof of the buidling acts as a signal that atracts, and for the people that frequent the terrace of the center, it’s a visual glass art composition. REhabilitation OF THE CULTURAL PALACE OF BLAJ

2011 Team: Florin Gavrilas, Adrian Nechita, Razvan Poting The purpose of the competition was to find a suitable solution for the restoration of the Cultural Palace of Blaj, an important building of the main plazza from the historic town. And also, to adapt the buidling to the present requirements. The main function of the building was a cinema and musical hall that was destroyed during a fire; in the present, the hall is without a ceiling. We start our project from this point, and we propose a multipurpose mobile roof for this main hall: o roof that can offer 3 state of ilumination, natural one (entirely open), an opaque state (closed with artificial ilumination), or filtrating state when a textile layer is closed over the glass layer allowing a controlated amount of light to enter through the ceiling. Another important part of the proposal was the mobility of the hall scene, a mechanism that allow to transport and connect the hall with its technical spaces. We propose a minimal redesign of the hall, so that it can accomodate various kind of events, starting from both classical and contemporary theater shows, cinema shows, musical and dancing shows, traditional fairs and exhibitions. One other important feature was the use of the old scene tower for the accomodation of some workshop classes necesary for the young people of the town. As for the street facades of the building, our proposal was to renovate them according to the historic image, adding a plus of visual atraction through the use of map projection, functioning as show events or advertising for the other events of the Cultural Palace.

PAINTING

Visual art I draw and paint from childhood. Art is a form of expresion that I apreciate in others and myself, that’s beauty and experiment as in architecture. It is a mix of ideas and selfdescovery, a complex play of different elements, that you can follow, a game that gives you unexpected answers, An estethic taste for shapes and volumes, for colours and materials, a visual world that influence me in my architectural searches and in my choices. As in architecture, there is a cultural line that you cand discover from early works of antiquity through the historic centuries until our days. Lessons that enlarge our horizons and guides us in the search for better solutions. Compared to architecture, the project of art are more abstract, they don’t have a material solution, but they put you in the same state of mind as when you are developing an architectural project; you need the same open minded attitude in order to achieve a good result.
