The Message Trust South Africa

IMMEASURABLY MORE! A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIR OF TRUSTEES Dear friend, It has been another memorable year for The Message Trust in South Africa. God continues to exceed anything we ask for or can imagine! Our first financial year (201415) saw God do amazing things through The Message. This report on our second financial year demonstrates that God has once again been faithful and abundantly generous to his people. As an organisation we strive to balance being radical in our faith with a sensible approach to how we govern and support our people, and partner in the amazing transformative work happening across Cape Town. This year has seen The Message team step out in faith in reaching more and more young people who need to hear and experience God’s love. It has been a privilege to witness how the team has grown and watch the advancement of our work among young people in prisons, schools, churches and communities. There have been so many highlights. We’ve seen young men released from prison, find work and fulfil their God-given potential. Two new businesses have emerged to provide employment to these young people. We have experienced the commissioning of another new Eden team in Pelican Park on the Cape Flats. And our missional band KineticIV has been active in more schools and communities across Cape Town. The coming year will be critical as we continue to step out in faith in establishing a physical presence in Cape Town through our Leadership and Enterprise Centre. This will enable us to reach the thousands of Cape Town youth we are eager to serve and work with.

‘NOW TO HIM WHO IS ABLE TO DO IMMEASURABLY MORE THAN ALL WE CAN ASK OR IMAGINE, ACCORDING TO HIS POWER THAT IS AT WORK WITH US’ EPHESIANS 3:20

I would like to encourage you to align with this exciting movement as you continue to support our efforts in reaching more and more young people in some of our most broken communities in Cape Town. We trust you will enjoy reading our second Annual Report as we share our reports and stories of what God has accomplished through The Message over this past year. Thank you for all your support,

Stephen Van Rhyn, Chair of Trustees

NATIONAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT TIM TUCKER LOOKS BACK ON AN AMAZING 2015 Following our exciting first year of operation, 2015 was a year when we wanted to increase our impact across Cape Town. As an organisation, we have been on a rapid growth curve since our inception in 2014 and this continued throughout 2015. To help focus our efforts, we developed a goal-setting process whereby each of our ministry streams could work towards specific outcomes. Each stream then highlighted one major goal for the year which, along with an overriding goal for the organisation as a whole, became our five big goals. Here’s how Message South Africa performed against each of our goals last year.

GOAL ONE

GOAL TWO

GOAL THREE

PILOT FIRST MESSAGE ENTERPRISE PROGRAMME WITH 27 OFFENDERS

TO CREATE CAPACITY TO EMPLOY 25 GANGSTARS THROUGH MICROENTERPRISE OPPORTUNITIES

LAUNCH TWO NEW EDEN TEAMS IN PELICAN PARK AND NYANGA

Our Message Enterprise Programme (MEP) was successfully launched in Drakenstein Correctional facility with 26 men graduating from the programme. Our Prison Team worked extremely hard and had great cooperation from Correction Services staff. MEP provides a deep intervention in the lives of these offenders whom we are preparing for life beyond prison..

Our major achievement in 2015 was to register our for-profit company, Gangstar Enterprise Development PTY Ltd ( fully owned by The Message), and register a subsidiary company, Gangstar Soft Machine PTY Ltd. We also received our first Enterprise Development funding and started piloting our next two small businesses. Additionally, we have continued to build the Message Business Network (MBN) connecting us with businesspeople committed to supporting us in this process. Although we do not yet have opportunities for 25 Gangstars, we believe this strategy has put us on course to create the necessary capacity in the years ahead.

At our Proximity Conference in October we commissioned our second Eden team, Eden Pelican Park. We did not officially launch Eden Nyanga in 2015 but developed a partnership agreement with New Crossroads Baptist Church and started the recruitment process for the new team.

4 MESSAGE SOUTH AFRICA ANNUAL REPORT 2016/17

GOAL FOUR

GOAL FIVE

LAUNCH OUR FIRST MESSAGE MISSIONAL BAND

TAKE OCCUPATION OF OUR LEADERSHIP AND ENTERPRISE CENTRE

Following six months of training at on the Message UK’s Academy programme, KineticIV returned to South Africa in July as our first missional band. Following an official launch event in August, the band has performed at numerous schools, churches and youth events across the city and have also appeared on television. They are an incredible asset to our Creative Mission stream.

Our goal was to find and occupy premises that would serve as our Leadership and Enterprise Centre. Our previous office space in Observatory was small, placing a lot of pressure on our growing team. After much prayer, we began actively seeking suitable premises, and by the end of the year we had signed a lease agreement to move in to our new building in February 2016. In addition, we recognised that we needed to build our leadership capacity and organisational culture. To that end we developed our leadership development team – comprising of our ministry stream leaders. We then embarked upon writing a new leadership curriculum for the organisation, ‘Becoming Christ-centred Servant Leaders.’ This ten-session course will form the bedrock of our strategy to invest in emerging leaders through each of The Message ministry streams.

SUMMARY It’s been encouraging to see all our streams reach their goals this past financial year. Each goal has meant that we have been able to make a significant impact on the lives of young people across Cape Town. At The Message we continuously look to learn and improve so that we can make a greater impact and effectively reach more young people. This past year has provided a great platform for our teams to go into 2016 full of faith and confidence, believing God will continue to bring hope and love to young people in prisons, gangs and disadvantaged communities in South Africa.

PRISON MINISTRY REPORT BY MARK SLESSENGER AND PRESTON JONGBLOED Our big goal for the past financial year was to launch our Message Enterprise Programme (MEP), involving over 150 stakeholders and partners at Drakenstein Correctional facility. Twenty-seven young men were selected from over 50 applicants to establish our first class of students, who themselves named the class ‘Future Leaders’. All our MEP students moved into one communal cell (set aside by Correctional Services for MEP) and quickly developed a strong sense of family and brotherhood. It was powerful to witness the students bond as they began to work together and make significant changes in their own lives and those of others. One student said ‘We have changed – we no longer talk about crime and gangsterism, we talk about business in the cell and changing our communities’. This statement sums up the MEP vision, which is to unlock our students’ God-given potential, to enable them to become world changers to multiply and transform others.

8 MESSAGE SOUTH AFRICA ANNUAL REPORT 2016/17

MEP offers a holistic curriculum that develops each student economically (through business), emotionally, socially and spiritually. Jennifer Belcher, a corporate lawyer from California, headed up our business curriculum, teaching entrepreneurship and helping each student develop a business plan. Students pitched their business plans to potential investors and business people at our first Business Model Competition in November. The young men exceeded all our expectations. One guest said, ‘These young men have pitched their business plans in a more professional manner than some CEOs I have heard speak at big events!’

pastoral care. We are thankful to Vuyo Nyabaza, Kwanele Cement and Adam Bull for their efforts with the students and helping to establish strong aftercare structures where each of our students can receive care and support.

Throughout the year our Prison Team also ran modules on leadership, character development, public speaking and discipleship courses, amongst other topics.

In November we held our first MEP graduation, an event attended by their families, who also heard testimonies from the students. One of the most significant outcomes of this event was having the young men dress up in graduation gowns and caps, which deeply impacted our students, with many of them sharing that this was the first time they had achieved something significant in their lives. It was a moving experience with many tears of joy shed throughout the event. Families were encouraged by the transformation they had witnessed throughout the year.

An important factor in MEP is our one-onone development of each student. Each student is mentored by one of our Prison Team staff, which includes going through a development plan, having a home visit where families are engaged, and regular

This year we also recognised more clearly the need to develop our students practically. Our students pitched a number of enterprise initiatives to Correctional Services that could be initiated in prison. Through this process we have launched

TESTIMONY:ERNESTO LOVE I was recently released after serving twelve of my 28-year sentence, and I want to say that The Message Trust has played a big role in my life, believing in me and helping me become a leader.

My name is Ernesto Love and I have been part of the MEP programme in Drakenstein since it started last year. The Message Trust taught me many things, like how to be humble, loyal, and more importantly to be a man of God who must set an example to the world.

Today I am not only helping in the community by being a positive role model for the youth, but I’m also applying everything I’ve learned from the MEP programme. Some of my brothers in prison who joined the MEP programme never had any vision for their lives, but today they have goals and dreams. I’m honoured to be able to live my dreams and to be outside the prison walls that confined me for so long. The Message Trust plays a pivotal role in my life, walking beside me and assisting me wherever they can. I am sincerely grateful to them for their support.

four in-prison enterprises that will be rolled out in 2016. These enterprises include public speaking, training, radio/ TV and music.

Nineteen of our first year students graduated into a second year MEP programme, and they will be launching these enterprises. Nine new first year students have been recruited from the interview process and we are excited to observe them develop in 2016. Our new first year students have titled themselves ‘The Transformers’ and we look forward to God transforming their lives and using them to transform others. Through our home visits in 2015 we were deeply moved to witness some of the difficult environments our students come from. Dysfunctional homes, high levels of gangsterism and crime, absent fathers and little or no income – these are just some of the challenges facing many of our

students upon release. This has driven our focus on establishing a halfway home for MEP in 2016. We believe if we can satisfy our students’ basic needs for food and clothing, safe and secure accommodation, and gainful employment, we can provide them with the necessary practical tools to succeed and grow in every area of their lives.

8 BUSINESS GUEST LECTURERS PRESENTING TOPICS IN FINANCE, HUMAN RESOURCE, MARKETING, SOCIAL MEDIA AND PUBLIC RELATIONS

We appreciate all who have supported our prisons work this past year and helped us make all the above possible.

CHRIST CENTRED ENTERPRISE REPORT BY JESSICA LONGE, ENTERPRISE PROJECT MANAGER 2015 was another year of growth in Christ-Centred Enterprise. In February, Gangstar Enterprise Development PTY Ltd (Gangstar Enterprises) was registered as a for-profit company owned by The Message Trust. Gangstar Enterprises incubates businesses until they are proven viable and are ready to branch out on their own. Gangstar Enterprises exists to provide employment opportunities to young people who come from tough neighbourhoods, who have been involved in gangs or have a criminal record. Our aim is: To unlock their God-given talents in order to live a life of purpose To empower them to empower others To multiply and disciple others in order to create a movement of world changers Gangstar Enterprises incubated three businesses in 2015: The Soft Machine, Gangstar Gear and Gangstar Furniture.

10 MESSAGE SOUTH AFRICA ANNUAL REPORT 2016/17

The Soft Machine, the first of the Gangstar Enterprises business, is a Gourmet Soft Serve Food Truck. It was an ideal opportunity to pilot how the businesses would operate, provide employment for Gangstars, and integrate them with the rest of The Message family. This business initially created jobs for three people: Vuyo, who towed the food truck from one event to the next, and Jade and Siphe who administered bookings and served customers. The cooler winter weather brought a welcome break after a busy and productive season which saw The Soft Machine break even. It was then decided to elevate this business to the next level. This was realised when our application for Enterprise Development funding was approved by LegalWise. This funding enabled us to prepare for the new season with a freshly painted caravan, machinery that worked efficiently, industry connections and reliable suppliers. We were able to employ a full-time operations manager, Ruan Toua, who started in October 2015. One of our apprentices left earlier this year which opened up the opportunity to offer positions to two part-

time employees: Nathan as a driver, and Xola who assisted with serving customers.

Gangstar Furniture became a reality over the last year with the coming together of an experienced businessman and a graduate of our ‘Learn to Earn’ woodwork programme in Drakenstein. Jeff from Sea Gems partnered with Gangstar Enterprises

I work in Gangstar Furniture and am mentored by both The Message and my business mentor Jeff Koster.

Working at Gangstar Enterprises is an enormous privilege for me, because it is not only a job to me, but also a place to grow mentally and spiritually. Working at The Message Trust is great because everyone is so supportive in all areas of my life.

This business takes rejected pieces of wood and converts them into something significant and beautiful. It reminds me of my own life as I was rejected by many, especially when I went to prison. People would say negative things about me and my brothers in prison but Christ never rejected me; he took my rejected life, turned it around and gave me a second chance. I’m creating crosses and signs out of the wood and as I make these products I am reminded of God’s goodness in my life and give him thanks. I am looking forward to growing the business and making new products over this next year.

to develop locally made beach-themed products instead of importing them from the east. Chumani has been busy with an order for signs and crosses decorated with sea shells. These items are distributed through Sea Gems to outlets along the Garden Route and West Coast. With the donation of industrial machinery and space in our new building he will begin manufacturing larger pieces of furniture in 2017. Gangstar Gear was launched at the Message Trust 2015 Vision Night with the first range of caps and T-shirts. It is an edgy clothing brand that appeals to youth to be a gangstar, and not a gangster. Our first employee in this business Farrol completed the Message Enterprise Programme (MEP) whilst working in Gangstar Gear two days a week. Farrol has played an integral role in bringing the positive brotherhood experience found in MEP to Gangstar Enterprises. This year has been spent analysing the industry and understanding the process of creating our own clothing brand. We are grateful for our partnership with Magents who have assisted with design and industry contacts. A new range of caps was recently launched that offers greater variety, fit and feel for our customers. This range will be expanded during 2016. The next initiative

we will focus on during the next year is a corporate clothing offering. This also creates the opportunity for supplier development funding. LegalWise has committed to supporting the growth of Gangstar Gear over the next three years through Enterprise Development funding.

EDEN NETWORK REPORT BY ALASTAIR BUCHANAN It was a real joy to launch Eden Pelican Park at our 2015 Annual Conference, and to be able to announce a partnership agreement with New Crossroads Baptist Church in Nyanga. We anticipate the imminent launch of Eden Nyanga at the 2016 Proximity Conference this summer. We already have six applicants for Eden Nyanga who have been meeting weekly since the end of last year. Meanwhile, our first Eden Team in Salt River has been steadily building relationships and trust within their community. And we have been actively pursuing relationships with at least three other potential church partners for our fourth Eden team, expected to be launched by December 2017. Space doesn’t allow for all the stories we would like to share in this report, so here are just some of the highlights.

12 MESSAGE SOUTH AFRICA ANNUAL REPORT 2016/17

Salt River When Grant Porthen heard that two Salt River youngsters needed to raise funds to join their mates from Jubilee Church at an overseas conference, the Eden team arranged a fundraising soccer competition at a local club. The neighbours of one of the youngsters live in the street overlooking the club and so witnessed the event on the day. This was a great way for our first team to send a clear message to the local community that they were there to love them in practical ways in the name of Christ, and to share his gospel of love with them.

Pelican Park Our newly launched team began with prayer walking and acts of kindness on the streets around the area. Followup at KineticIV gigs and other open air outreaches at the Cape Gateway International Church also proved to be

a memorable experience. The team has naturally had to cope with the occasional pastoral crisis, such as providing temporary accommodation to a family whose house had burnt down. They are proving they are up for whatever challenges come their way!

Nyanga In Nyanga our emerging team got 2016 off to a strong start. In January, the six future Eden team members partnered with Ubuntu Soccer (a Christian coaching academy) to assist in hosting the Nyanga Soccer Festival at the main soccer ground in the area. This involved a visiting US

Celtic AFC was established three years ago, and is run by ex-gangsters in the community. The club has about 100 members of which 60 are youth. We came into contact with the club through two youth of the community that attend Jubilee Church. Our initial engagement with the club was as simple as heading out to the field to watch some of the games. Over three months a relationship of trust grew between the club and our team, and at the beginning of 2016 they approached us to oversee the club’s

team and a coaching clinic with about 200 youngsters who were treated to lunch together with a short Bible message from Vuyo, the church’s youth pastor. In March, Eden Nyanga also hosted the final stage of a highly successful Message UK sponsored cycle tour from Port Elizabeth to Nyanga. Having a visiting traditional dance troupe plus the local Ward Counsellor and three colleagues present was a huge boost for such a small emerging team. After such a promising start, the rest of 2016 presents an exciting challenge as we reach out to these communities trusting on God’s promise that he will be with us. Our key objective for 2016 is to recruit 20 urban missionaries to serve in Eden teams across Cape Town. If you are interested in finding more about Eden, please contact us at info@message.org.za.

CREATIVE MISSION REPORT SHAUN PRETORIUS We recognised the potential of the creative arts when the Concrete Apostles performed at Message South Africa’s launch event in February 2014. Their dance performance was explosive and showcased the level of talent of young people in South Africa. In response, Andy Hawthorne (Founder of The Message Trust in the UK) was moved to offer scholarships to four young South Africans to attend Message Academy in Manchester.

Recruited over the next few months, Justin, Jabulani, Gilead and Meryl then travelled to the UK to receive intensive mission and creative development training. During this visit the group adopted the name KineticIV and gained valuable performance and mission experience. KineticIV returned to South Africa in July 2015 to serve with us as our first full-time mission team. We hosted the launch of KineticIV, at Kaleidoscope Cafe in Claremont on August 1, 2015. It was an exciting evening, with over 160 attendees from all over Cape Town. The launch also introduced me as the band’s new manager. August was a busy month for the KineticIV, hosting their first South African mission week in Nyanga, where they visited two schools: Fezeka High and Gugulethu Comprehensive. They also did four church gigs, which included performing alongside CCFM at the Grandwest Ice Rink. From August 30 to September 6, KineticIV toured with the UK band, Twelve24, visiting three schools, namely Milnerton High, Camps Bay High and Sea Point High. They

also paid a visit to Drakenstein prison, as well as three churches, Jubilee Community Church, Life Church and Grace Performing Arts Centre. Twelve24 spent a full day in studio assisting the team with new music they were working on.

ATTENDEES AT KINETICIV LAUNCH

Our youth have been so impacted by having KineticIV perform and share their testimonies in our church. What I love about KineticIV is that there is a real genuineness amongst the group when they interact with our youth. They are always full of energy, smiles and enthusiasm for the gospel. What is powerful is that they don’t only perform, but through their music they also share their testimonies and impact young people. One of the band members shared what is was like being an orphan, which resonated with many of the young people in our church, particularly considering that many of them also come from broken homes in our community.

After each song that KineticIV performed, there was a sense of hope and purpose. Every time they’ve performed at our church their success is measured in how they reached all age groups and challenged their walk with God. I have never seen a more enthusiastic, diverse and passionate team on stage. I am certain that others will echo those words. Our church youth has thoroughly enjoyed every moment with KineticIV and look forward to more encounters with them as we lead this generation towards their one true hope, Jesus Christ.

The rest of September saw the band perform at three schools and an AOG church conference. On September 25, KineticIV performed on The Expresso Breakfast Show, a morning TV programme which airs live nationwide daily. October was just as busy for the team, as they were hosted by more churches and they supported our SA Eden team by performing at the Proximity conference. On November 10, the team were again invited to perform on national television, this time by the teen programme, Hectic99, which was aired on Christmas Day. KineticIV were also invited to Citrusdal from 20-22 November, where they performed in a school and to a whole farm community at the Hebron Community Centre. The group rounded off 2015 on a high by performing at the yearly Cape Town Carols event hosted by CCFM. Our goal in 2016 is to reach 10,000 young people through ten school week outreaches. In February 2016, KineticIV partnered with West Reach AOG church to raise awareness of the problem of bullying through workshops at Princeton High School in Mitchells Plain. Then in March the team once again headed over to

Manchester to support our UK office with the Higher Tour. They performed at four schools and were the opening act at the 02 Apollo Manchester

FINANCIAL REPORT

FOR THE YEAR ENDED FEBRUARY 2016

The Message Trust continued to grow as it consolidated its programmes and established key personnel and procedures. The 4 foundational ministries all experienced growth, as can be seen by the increased spending on these projects:

LOOKING FORWARD TIM TUCKER LOOKS AHEAD TO 2016 As we entered 2016, we recognised the importance to both consolidate and strengthen all the good work that had begun since our launch in 2014. Having spent two years developing our models of ministry through our four key streams, we now need to ensure that we invest our time, effort and resources so that we accomplish sustainable growth. Additionally, we are shaping our strategy around four clear longterm outcomes which each of the ministry streams are working towards:

• • • •

Empower young people Equip the church Eradicate gangsterism Expand into Africa

Our specific main goals for 2016 are outlined as follows:

GOAL ONE

GOAL TWO

GOAL THREE

TO PURCHASE OUR LEADERSHIP AND ENTERPRISE CENTRE

TO HAVE ONE HALFWAY-HOME TO HOUSE FOUR MEP GRADUATES WHO REQUIRE ACCOMMODATION UPON RELEASE

TO CREATE TEN EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH AT RISK COMING THROUGH OUR MEP AND EDEN STREAMS

Recognising that many of our MEP students will have major challenges with accommodation upon their release from prison, we are looking to pilot our first halfway-home. This will be a safe place that will facilitate reintegration and provide a positive home environment.

Having established our Gangstar Enterprises Business structure, we are now seeking to grow our businesses to provide more opportunities for young people to pursue employment and business opportunities. Our three micro-businesses all have expansion possibilities enabling us to take on more employees.

Having taken rental occupation of a building in Woodstock, we are now in the process of raising funds to purchase the premises. The vision is for this to become our Africa hub – able to support our work across Cape Town and facilitate the future growth of The Message into other urban centres across the continent.

GOAL FOUR

GOAL FIVE

TO RECRUIT 20 URBAN MISSIONARIES TO STRENGTHEN OUR EDEN TEAMS

FOR KINETICIV TO REACH 10,000 YOUNG PEOPLE THROUGH MISSIONS IN AT LEAST TEN SCHOOLS ACROSS CAPE TOWN

We recognise that Eden is dependent upon building teams of volunteers who are willing to serve long-term in tough neighbourhoods. Before expanding into more teams, we want to strengthen our existing teams and therefore need to improve our recruiting strategy.

Our desire is for KineticIV to become increasingly effective as a missional team. We believe they have the potential to impact thousands of young people across the city – particularly in schools. This year we are seeking to gain access into more schools, providing a bridge for local churches to impact youth with the gospel.

‘Alpha and The Message have a global partnership that has seen many lives transformed by Jesus Christ through a combination of the amazing reach of The Message into marginalized individuals and communities and the simplicity of Alpha as a way to introduce people to Jesus. We have seen this powerful combination particularly through local church Eden projects and ministry to prisons. Alpha is committed as a gospel partner of The Message to the transformation of lives and communities.’

‘The Message is an organisation that demonstrates a spirit of service to those who are, more often than not, discounted as being able to make a valuable contribution to the South African economy. Through Gangstar Enterprise Development, LegalWise is afforded the opportunity to support those who have risen above the rest to take responsibility for improving their own lives and those around them. Working with The Message is both rewarding and inspirational; within an environment that is enabling for corporate investment in small business development.’

LESLEY HAYNES, CSI MANAGER, LEGALWISE ‘We have worked closely with The Message Trust over the last few years. We are so impressed with what they do and what they have managed to accomplish in such a short period of time. Their work has been an inspiration to us and has spurred us on to be even more committed to reaching the lost, the marginalised, and the most isolated people in our city. Their partnership with us in the Salt River Eden Team has been invaluable and we have benefited from the wealth of their wisdom. The Salt River Eden - Jubilee partnership has acted like a flywheel for us – it has deepened what we are already involved in doing, and has brought a freshness to our work. We have seen relationships established with our community and we have every confidence that they will bear lasting fruit, ultimately leading people to meet our Saviour Jesus Christ. What an excellent group of people to be in relationship with.’
