omni shelf Floyd Liu, 2017 Walnut, Plywood, Walnut Veneers, Aluminum, Glass Manufactured by 12 Hours Exhibited in 2017 Shanghai DOD Furniture Show
Omni Shelf is an individual project assigned to me during my internshi p at 12 Hours, Shang hai. The shelf is part of the 12 Hours Study Series and is now being mass produced.
current issues
Many existing shelve designs do not provide customizable units so customers need to buy additional products like dividers to keep their books organized.
Unused space on the shelf is prone to attracting dust, and cleaning can be problematic if the shelf contains fragile items.
Many existing shelves use sliding rails that are bulky and heavy, therefore damaging the aesthetic aspect of the design.
ideation
The project required me to design a shelf with glass. The form needs to show our national identity while maintaining a modern aesthetic. The shelf will satisfy the need to organize the books along with other items.
Joinery Except for the glass sliding door, the shelf body are connected using only traditional wooden joineries.
Customization The removable dividers are plywood boards with walnut veneers and are less likely to be influenced by the expansion and contraction of the wood due to the change in humidity.

8mm Reinforced Glass In a shelf design, every ounce of weig ht is crucial to the safety. 8mm thick reinforced glass is optimal since it reduces a lot of unnecessary weig ht and can still be strong.
Guiding Wheels They guide the motion of the sliding glass and keep the glass close to the shelf.

Positioning Pins The positioning pin is applied to limit the range of motion.
Vertical Wheels They ride against the rail and keep the sliding glass in place.
Horizontal Wheels They ride on the top of the shelf and provide a smooth user experience.

flex chair Floyd Liu, 2016 Walnut, Plywood, Cherry, Hinges Exhibited in Portfolio Industrial Design Show, Urbana, 2017
Flex chair is designed to simulate the experience of sinking in a couch by using hinges in between the triangular seat panels.
inspiration & ideation Inspired by faceted forms and low-poly 3D design, I found that the triangular pieces can have a chain reaction if they are connected the rig ht way.
mechanism & process
The chair is hand-crafted and joined using traditional wooden joinery. Wood bending technique was used for the headrest. The flexibility of the chair aims to mimic the experience of the body sinking in a couch. As the user lies down, the sides of the chair will come up and transform into two armrests. All triangular pieces of wood

The design was honored the “Student Notable award in the Furniture & Lig hting category out of hundreds of finalists for its outstanding execution, insig ht,creativity, and intent.

yiyi hanger Floyd Liu, 2017 Stainless Steel Manufactured by 12 Hours Exhibited in 2017 Shanghai DOD Furniture Show
Yiyi was a collaborated project with the design director Qiang Zeng during my internshi p at 12 Hours and is mass produced.
inspiration The structure of the hanger took inspiration from the button design on Qi pao, a traditional Chinese dress for women. The design aims to capture the delicacy and beauty of Chinese women.
The specially made rivets are not merely for aesthetic purposes but also serve a structural function. They keep the hanger strong and prevent the shoulder from bending over time.
minimal, not simple After many tries and different iterations of prototypes, the angle of the hanger was set at 135 degree to provide,in our opinion, the best aesthetic for the hanger itself and the clothes that hang onto the hanger.

juicer reverse Floyd Liu, 2016 Built in Solidworks Rendered in Keyshot
This project developed our CAD and reverse engineering skills. It demanded us to research on a certain juicer and make a model out of it using Solidworks. The ultimate goal of this project is to make us improve the juicer based on our user experience with the product.
original model The original product was taken apart, measured and modeled in CAD program. The process aims to improve our CAD skill and gain a deeper insig ht into the design and function of the juicer.

redesigned The original design has a sleek look but seems cheap. So I gave my new design a darker tone and matte finish to elevate its appearance and elegance.
The overall look of the design was inspired by Chinese teapots, especially the spout and this design helps the flow of the juice and therefore preventing spillage.
Unlike the original design, the new juicer has a strainer with a locking mechanism. This feature enables user to pour the juice rig ht out of the pitcher without removing any parts individual parts.
The groove in the bottom part of the juicer provides a solution to cord storage.
I designed a handle free juicer because I want it to be more compact. To compensate the function of the handle, I created two concavities on the pitcher and gave them a frosted finish to enhance the friction so the user can grab it better.
eco earbuds organizer Floyd Liu, 2016 Urethane Foam, Poplar, Magnets Exhibited in Portfolio Industrial Design Show, Urbana, 2017
Eco is a biomimicry design solution to keep your earbuds organized and away from damage.
problem description The messy earbud cord has always been bugging us. There are many solutions to this problem. Some products do help with the situation,in a way. But you always have to use them as two

separate things.
Biomimicry is the process of using elements from nature to inspire the form or function of a designed object.
prototype
final model The final model is made with hig h density urethane foam and wood with a white matte finish.
ECO features a slick design that is intuitive and really easy to use. Two concavities on the top of ECO allows earbuds to sit securely. The earbuds organizer can be opened up like a book. This feature is realized with the help of mini hinges. Also there’s a hidden magnet on each side to keep ECO shut. When your pockets are full of your accessories like phone and wallets. You still can keep ECO close by using the cli ps to attach ECO to your clothes or anywhere you want. The cli ps are made of rubberized material so it is always a snug fit.
ECO has two big cli ps that can be used, in situation like running, to prevent the cord from dangling. Also, ECO frees your hands by holding the microphone for you so you don’t have to hold it when talking.
