night / crawler

Night crawler is a project from the form development class. The design aims to show the tertiary emotion “thrill through the the the language of the form.

inspirations

I tried to adopt the design language of cars, especially Lamborghinis. They have always been the symbol

of speed and desire. The faceted surfaces convey a sense of strength, power and excitement..

Ideation

model making

Foam model was sculpted to refine the the design from the sketches

reverse engineering in alias

Based on the foam model, the design was recreated in Alias and more details were added to refine the design.

carbon fibers

Carbon fiber saddle and handlebar cut the overall weight down and still provides a durable and comfortable experience.

headlight

A headlight is added to ensure a safer ride even in a dark environment. The light will be charged by the the paddeling action.

wuu / wall work lamp

The challenge was to design a work lamp that not only functions as a tool to make working experience better but also as a

timeless product that users will cherish and enjoy using.

touch and create

The product is part of the “T- Series” product line. “T” stands for the sense of touch and the final result should elicit desire and encourage the users to touch and feel the product.

The lamp aims to provide a better lighting for designers without sacrificing the limited workspace.

design language study

Wuu’sminimalist approach focuses on the use of fundamental geometries like cube, sphere and cylinder.

The most challenging part of this project is to combine simple geometries andcreate interesting results.

form development

The proportion of all different parts went through a vigorous sketching process to make sure that the appearance is beautiful.

The design of the pivots have gone through some major changes to ensure both the strength and aesthetic.

preliminary engineering

The biggest obstacle I encountered is to make sure all electrical parts fit and work properly without changing the slim profile and increasing the production cost.

Many sketchings were made to experiement different structural possibilities.

models / prototypes

foam models were made to scale to examine its aesthetic

3D printed parts were made to test the feasibility of the

pivot and lighting assemblies.

Rubber caps are used to cover the tightening mechanism and simplify the form.

The outer cover is a one piece structure to ensure its connection with the tubes.

POM plastic pad is used to increase the friction.

Two circular pieces are fastened together to lock down the shaft and confine the movement.

A bolt and nut mechanism locks all the components down and allow adjustability of the friction.

control unit All elctronic components including PCB boards, diffuser, touch sensor need to fit in a tiny space that’s less than 10mm

in depth to maintain the slim look of the design.

The intensity and temperature can be changed to cater different situations.

Rubber cap is used to keep the cable in place and cover the threads.

The lamp works well in daytime as a ambient light source.

night

Thanks to the adjustability of the lamp. It can be used as a reading light source.

12 hours / omni shelf Omni was assigned to me as an individual project during my internship at Shi Er Shi Man (12 hours). The idea is to design

a shelf that is “Chinese, minimal and modern at the same time.

* Introduction Summer 2017

Dieter Rams’ 606 shelving system epitomize what a good modular, flexible system is like.

inspirations A moveable divder will be taken into consideration for its flexibility. The criss cross structure provides a aligned yet interesting aesthetic.

The analogy between a grid system in graphic design and shelf design is useful in terms of the organizational nature of the product.

sketches

a grid for all

310mm

The sizes of different kinds of publications were taken into considerations. The result is a grid system suitable for collecting your vinyl rcords, catergorizing maginzines and store your precious books.

user centered

2110mm

Plywood dividers are laminated with walnut veneers to achieve a uniform look on the design and provide a smoother user experience.

The height of the shelf is set to 2110mm so any adults can easily reach the top of the shelf and prevent danger from using a chair.

innovative structure

reinforced glass

position pins

support wheels

guiding wheels

They limit the motion of the aluminum bar and protect the top panel from damaged.

Those vertical and horizontal wheels runs in the grove of the top panel and enable the glass door to slide smoothly.

The 8mm thick reinforced glass ensures the strength while remaining relatively light.

They ride in the grove of the bottom panel and keep the glass close to the shelf body.

aluminum bar The aluminum sliding bar is what keeps all the hardwares together and maintain a minimalist look on the design. The bar is engineered to cut down any unnecessary weight and provide enough strength to keep the glass stable.

omni shelf After a series of adjustments and test productions, the resulting design is a multifunctional shelf that not only keeps the books organized but also keeps your most precious items protected .

wuu / wall shelf structure design The challenge for this project is to design the structure of the wall mounted shelf block withou exposing any seam

around it. The production cost also needs to be considered to find the best solution.

early exploration

1st iteration

Pros It features a T-slot structure that allows the backplate to slide in. The assembling process is easy.

Cons Due to the intensive CNC works involved, the cost is high. The CNC process is complicated and needs a tight tolerance to ensure that it doesn’t wiggle. The sliding is not smooth.

2nd iteration

Pros The shape of the hook wedges into the cavity of the block so it’s stable. Though more parts, the manuafacture process of each part is simpler, therefore less cost.

Cons More parts need to be made more aseembly steps

prototypes

The block and plate were made with AL6063 aluminum and then CNC milled.

Milled parts are then anodized and bead-blasted to finish.
