FloydFest 13 A Revolutionary Experience
It’s the boutique summer music festival at its finest, a fully-loaded, 5-day staycation filled with music, healing arts, the outdoors, and more, all in a pristine and intimate setting in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It can only be FloydFest, back for its 13th year of music and magic in the mountains! This year’s “Revolutionary”-themed festival featured over 70 performers on 10 stages, over 100 artisans and crafters, a comprehensive healing arts area, a Global Arts Village, a Children’s Universe, and endless opportunities for outdoor fun, relaxation, and rejuvenation. This year’s FloydFest introduced a number of re-vamped logistics based on feedback and requests from patrons of years past. With ticket sales cut and the majority of camping moved off the festival site, FloydFest re-created the uniquely intimate, boutique music festival experience that has continued to draw fans back year after year. Other logistical improvements included a private airstrip for off-site parking, deluxe coach shuttle buses with extended shuttle hours to all off-site parking lots, and a new “Tent Tag” system, which ensured that all on-site campers were provided with a spacious and comfortable camping areas. With minimal shuttle waits, upgraded camping, and plenty of space to enjoy FloydFest’s aesthetic beauty, this year’s logistical improvements were welcomed with praise and enthusiasm from festival-goers throughout the weekend. Among the ‘Revolutionary’ changes this year was a bold new artist line-up, featuring an unprecedented melding of R&B, Blues, Reggae, Americana, and more. Headliners such 6

as Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite, Ray LaMontagne, Ms. Lauryn Hill, and Ziggy Marley brought invigorating new sound to the Dreaming Creek Main Stage, while FloydFest fan favorites such as Rising Appalachia, Donna the Buffalo, and The Duhks kept crowds captivated into the wee hours of the night. Whether it was a headlining performance on the main stage, or an intimate jam session at the Ferrum Workshop Porch, FloydFest 13 fans were treated to a Revolutionary concoction of bold musical messages and sweet mountain sound that can’t be found anywhere else. FloydFest attendees were privy to a wide variety of new and exciting outdoor activities, including Osprey guided hikes, canoe trips down the Little River, mountain bike rides, and a Vasque 5k trail race. The Healing Arts Village hosted yoga, massages, and meditation sessions, and the nearby Children’s Universe offered an array of fun activities for kids. At the Global Village, fans attended aerial workshops and a “Revolution-wear” fashion show, while others found relaxation at the ENO Hammock Lounge. At the new Sugarlands Shine Speakeasy stage, adults enjoyed delicious Sugarlands Moonshine while jamming to their favorite bands. charity, the Healing Harvest Forest Foundation. The organization’s mission statement is: “To address human needs for forest products while creating a nurturing coexistence between the forest and human communities.” We conduct public educational events throughout the region annually and train folks interested in this work through a network of mentors and apprentices. Last year, we conducted a week-long event called Biological Woodsmen’s Week held at the Floyd EcoVillage. Our guest speaker and participant in a panel discussion with other experts in the culture was internationally known author Wendell Berry. We also use our horses to support the Floyd County High School FFA Farm, by demonstrating proven traditional conservation tillage practices. Over the years, we have had many media exposures including being on the cover of the Mother Earth News, Draft Horse Journal, and being featured in local and regional newspapers. We also have an article coming out in the international trade magazine, The Draft Horse Journal, titled: “New Horse from the Old World” tells the story of our journey to England to find a new sire for our herd. Other media exposures include being in several documentaries on A&E and PBS. We’ve been included in History Channel’s Ax Men show, season five and our most current media exposure includes being on the RFD-TV’s Gentle Giants show, airing in September on the cable network, Rural America’s Most Important Network. None of this achievement and labor of love would be possible without the support of our community. The Floyd Radio Show – Fall Series The Floyd Radio Show returns for its fourth season this fall, bringing its popular variety hour back to the Floyd Country Store, to the Internet and for the first time on the road for live performances in Roanoke and Lewisburg, West Virginia. Hosted by Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth LaPrelle, the Floyd Radio Show features original radio plays, comedy, ads, jingles and the best traditional music from Southwest Virginia and beyond. Guests on the show, scheduled for the first Saturday of each month through May, include members of some of the area’s finest old-time musical acts, from storytelling banjo players, flat-picking guitarists to hard-driving string bands. This fall’s shows feature poet and spoken-word artist Minton Sparks, accompanied by guitarist John Jackson, Mac and Jenny Traynham, the Buckstankle Boys, stories with the New River Land Trust, the Black Twig Pickers, New Ballard’s Branch Bogtrotters, Sheila Kay Adams and more. The show’s appeal, however, comes less from the individual artists, great as they all are, and more for the way they’re brought beneath one roof and combined with an assortment of other ingredients for a true variety show. That formula has evolved as Roberts-Gevalt and LaPrelle, or as they’re known on stage and in recordings as Anna and Elizabeth have refined the show over the years. “We wanted to do the shows as a variety so it’s more than the sum of its parts,” says LaPrelle. “We wanted people to come out because the show was going to be good even if they don’t recognize the names of the artists on the ticket. People come out for a big variety of acts. We showcase not just the old-time music but also the diversity of traditional music going on in the area.” The variety of talent changes with each show. In the past, we have showcased a gospel choir, a gospel piano player and a trio of African singers from Burundi via Roanoke, in addition to more traditional string bands. Anna and Elizabeth began hosting the show not long after they began playing together as a duet. They met at a 2010 Blacksburg show and quickly bonded over their shared love of mountain music. LaPrelle grew up in Rural Retreat, Virginia, going to fiddler’s conventions “I’d bring my little cowboy boots and dance and explore music through my mom’s old CDs, tapes and records.” Roberts-Gevalt grew up in New England, fell in love with the music in college and moved to the mountains afterward to pursue her passion. Anna and Elizabeth perform old-time tunes, often picked up from Appalachian icons like Texas Gladden, Jean Ritchie and Sheila Kay Adams,

with a variety of instruments and storytelling devices. They occasionally use a cabinet to display what they call “crankies”, proudly described as scrolling illustrations made from cloth or paper which depict oral histories, banjo tunes and ballads. The radio show serves as another extension of their act, allowing them to collaborate with regular cast members, writers and each show’s guest to produce a well-engineered radio hour that’s streamed live over the Floyd Country Store’s website and edited into a podcast that’s available on the site or through iTunes. Each show is special and a bargain for the price of admission, but it’s worth mentioning a couple of standout guests who are nationally known. September’s season opener features Minton Sparks, an artist who fuses music, poetry and storytelling to paint word pictures of the rural South. December’s show includes Sheila Kay Adams, who taught LaPrelle some of her first ballads. Adams is a seventh generation native of western North Carolina and has won recognition both for her performances of age-old ballads and as an author. In addition to the regularly scheduled shows, the 2014-15 season also features a pair of touring performances at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke and at Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg, West Virginia. LaPrelle says the Roanoke show, scheduled for Nov. 14, will be built around the history of the Star City and nearby communities in the Roanoke Valley. The Lewisburg show, scheduled for March 27, 2015, is still being planned. Tickets for The Floyd Radio Show are $10.00 in advance or $15.00 the day of the show. Chiropractic is Different When most people think about doctors, they have some preconceived ideas about what each doctor does. Obviously, their family doctors are telling them what is wrong when they are sick and prescribing a medication when it is indicated. The family doctor may also make referrals to a specialtist, who is highly skilled in a specific field, like a cardiologist, orthopedic doctors, endocrinologists and the list goes on. We all have an idea about what these doctors do. Physical therapists, occupational therapists and respiratory therapists also have their identities. When it comes to chiropractic, the preconception is usually the wrong one. It is our philosophy and our approach to total body health that resonates with almost anyone that is told the truth about chiropractic. Simply put, the chiropractic philosophy that has not changed since our founding is- “The power that makes the body, heals the body.” Central to our thinking is that the body is self healing and self regulating. The chiropractic approach is one of “Vitalism”, we believe that the human body is more than the sum of its parts. There is an intelligent energy that lives in all humans that chiropractors call “innate intelligence.” There are different names for it, some people call it spirit, soul, or God, vital energy or Chi. No matter what you call it, just understand that it exists. If you have two bodies lying side by side, one that is very alive and one that has just died, what is the difference? One has the ‘vital life force’ or energy and the other one does not. It is this energy that maintains us and heals us throughout our life time that is essential to the chiropractic philosophy. If you cut yourself, this innate intelligence knows how to put the gazillions of cells together necessary to heal you. This intelligence knows how to make the thousands of proteins necessary for life, it makes insulin, vitamins, adrenalin, dopamine and tears, in just exactly the right amount. It knows how much to breathe, how many heartbeats are required, how to heal broken bones and burns. This “innate intelligence” can take raw undigested foods and convert it into a form that nourishes and maintains us. It allows us to think, 14

to feel emotions, to react when we are in danger. Hopefully you are getting the point now. So what does chiropractic have to do with all of this? I thought you’d never ask. This intelligence I have been speaking of travels all around our bodies via the nerve system also called the neuro-endocrine system. This network of nerves has two basic parts, the central and peripheral nerve system. The central nervous system is housed by the skull and the spinal column, the peripheral nervous system branches off of the nerves that exit the spine and travel to virtually every part of your body. The chiropractor works with the relationship of your spine to your central and peripheral nervous system. Your central nervous system is kind of like your computer system, it is running the show that is your life. This system is so valuable and so important that it is totally surrounded by a bony protective system (skull and spinal column). Where the nerves exit the spine is the junction between the central and peripheral nervous system. If a vertebra in the spinal column becomes misaligned or slightly out of place, it can place pressure on the exiting nerve root. This nerve may travel down your leg to your foot, it may come from your neck and travel down your arms to your little finger. It can cause significant pain in the area that the nerve supplies its nerve energy to. This is what most people come to the chiropractor for, pain. While we are concerned about pain, that is not the entire story, it is only half of the picture. The same nerve root that is irritated as it exits the spine, splits into two parts, one goes to your muscles, bones, joints and skin (your carcass), the other part of the nerve goes to your internal organs (your viscera). This is the part of the chiropractic story that most people never hear. If you have pain in your upper back, the same nerves that supply your muscles in that region, go to your heart! The nerves that go down your leg also supply vital nerve energy to your bladder, intestines, and reproductive organs! The nerves in your upper neck can cause headaches, they also supply nerve energy

to your sinuses, throat and even your thymus gland (a key player in immune function). The nerves in your mid back supply your pancreas, stomach, liver and other organs. Hopefully you are beginning to see how important it is to keep the pressure off the nerves as they exit the spinal column. Maintaining your spine throughout your life time is crucial to good health. Nerve energy is much like water through a hose, if you step on the supply end of the hose, you will decrease the amount of water coming out of the other end. The water may still flow, just not at 100%. Nerve energy works basically the same way. You can have interference with the nerve energy to your heart, liver or kidneys and they will still function. What are the results of living for years or decades with reduced vital nerve energy to a vital organ? This is the ‘Big Picture’ of chiropractic. It is about so much more than musculo-skeletal pain.

Chantilly Farm – RVs and Campers are Welcomed Chantilly Farm is a picturesque event venue with over 200 acres tucked away amongst rolling hills in southeastern Floyd County. Now with added acreage and new amenities, we have added our latest camping area to accommodate tents and RVs. Chantilly Farm has established its reputation both locally and regionally as a growing outdoor events venue. “For several years visitors to the area have contacted us to inquire about parking their RVs at Chantilly Farm because of our proximity to Downtown Floyd and the Blue Ridge Parkway. We’re very excited, we are now able to accommodate visitors with RVs or whoever wants to enjoy more primitive camping with a tent site. This new addition has added value to our festival offerings moving forward,” commented Dee Wallace, one of the principals of the farm operation. Once the final phases of construction are completed this fall, Chantilly Farm will offer 25 spaces for RVs that include full hookups for electricity, potable water, and sewer. Many of the spaces will feature pullthrough capability which provides ease of access for even the largest RVs and motorcoaches. Recently constructed for campers is a handicapped accessible shower-house with restroom facilities and we are excited to 18

announce a second one is already in the works for another area of the venue. Chantilly Farm has installed an RV dump station near its main entrance to accommodate visitors who are drycamping with their RVs. This drastically expands the number of campers the venue can host during larger scale festivals and special events. The new dump station will be available to patrons of the campground, as well as visitors who are passing through the area and find themselves in need of this service (a reasonable fee will be charged). Some other enjoyable features we offer are free wireless internet service, miles of wooded hiking trails, abundant wildlife, and acres of grassy fields, making Chantilly Farm a different stop from what travelers are accustomed too. It is a tranquil place that visitors repeatedly say, they fall in love with. One thing is for sure, if you’re looking for a beautiful spot to pitch your tent or park your RV during your next visit to Floyd County, then Chantilly Farm is a great place to do it. Chasing Cars Luis Garcia, the publisher of Floyd Magazine, has really helped our show to grow. Thank you so much! Our 2014 Floyd Auto Fair put on by Chasing SS Cars is really flourishing. We had our first three day event and it was a huge success. The show had over 200 vendors, some of them coming in from as far as Pennsylvania to Tidewater and everywhere in between. There were over 250 cars, trucks, rat rods and bikes displayed for everyone’s enjoyment, with many of the cars and trucks filling the area in front of the music stage while bands jammed out most of the day on Saturday. We added vintage signs, toys and antiques to our Swap Meet. We also added more vendors to our Spring 2015 event. We are excited to announce we now have a bathhouse with showers to accommodate our vendors, thanks to Chantilly Farm who have such a great place to host our show. Chateau Morrisette Grows Chateau Morrisette is growing more than grapes. In August, Triad in partnership with FAIRS hosted a program at the Amateur Radio Station located at the Village Green in Floyd, Virginia. Amateur Radio, also known as Ham Radio is a popular hobby and service in which licensed amateur radio operators (hams) operate communications equipment. We have quite a few hams in and around Floyd County. Contact: Russell F. The Deer Run Drifters
Hailing from Floyd, a small mountain town in the Appalachians of Southwest Virginia, the music this talented quintet plays will come as no surprise. It is acoustic music that I was tempted to refer to as old-timey, but that would be a restrictive description. Certainly, there is a strong thread of rural old-timey running through this excellent album, but this music, while it could easily have had relevance in the 1920s, is perhaps even more so now. The Deer Run Drifters have taken a traditional genre and rather than trying to do the same thing, they have added their own individual stamp and updated the tradition, as a number of other young talented bands have successfully done recently. I’ve seen bands such as the Old Crow Medicine Show, Hackensaw Boys and Avett Brothers amongst others and while I can see why comparisons were made, the Deer Run Drifters sound feels more sparse and with more of a ‘hillbilly’ feel than any of the aforementioned. In most ways, there is a strong individuality that will stand them in good stead. I must confess for those that don’t already know, if an album includes a well played banjo, mandolin, fiddle, etc. it is impressing and so is this terrific recording. Fairly obviously, to go the whole hog and be totally impressive requires considerably more, something this album achieves with ease. Chris Link’s vocals are strong and really have an Appalachian feel, as well as his true accent, giving the songs a powerful grittiness. When you add the equally important and skilled contributions of the rest of the band it’s impossible to see failure as an option! Unusually, this band consists of two sets of brothers and a friend! The brothers are Chris Link, who wrote most of the songs, handles lead vocals and acoustic guitar, his brother Joe on back up vocals and mandolin, Sean Edgell also on back up vocals, harmonica and acoustic guitar and his brother Shane on banjo and writer of the title track Appalachian Blues. Finally, Will Norton laying the foundation with the solidity of his bass playing. Ultimately, a band that has a single lead vocalist and main songwriter, but are very much a group of musicians would hold true in many ways to say that ‘the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts.’ The songs are all beautifully written, with some having a powerful poeticism and arrangements along with excellent musicianship, never gets in the way of the often sad stories. “Blackberry Wine” starts with a

solemn fiddle which adds a nice counterpoint to the chirpy banjo on the tale of someone who is coming to terms with the fact that he has lost his love to another, but there is always solace in the blackberry wine. In the case of “Mama Oh Mama”, a nice chiming acoustic guitar is soon joined by harmonica and banjo on the dramatic tale of a lawbreaker who finally apologises for what he has done to his family. There is a powerful haunting sense of realism to the song, thanks to the instrumentation and Chris Link’s atmospheric vocal that evokes someone who has come to terms with and accepted his fate. “Lowlife” is in many ways a tale of torment on the story of someone who is in love with a girl but can’t change his ways, although perhaps he’s prepared to try, despite giving the listener the impression that it is unlikely. The excellent acoustic guitar, mandolin and banjo provide excellent support and atmosphere without ever dominating the song. “Saving Grace” has a nice roaming fiddle in the background on a song that has a philosophical edge of sadness running through it and an enhanced sense of drama, thanks to the sparse but emotive instrumentation and particularly the world weary lead vocal. Finally, the title track, “Appalachian Blues” is a song that really is an evocation of the title with it’s high lonesome sound and theme with banjo to the fore on a hugely atmospheric song. ‘Atmosphere’ is a much used word in the above review but for a very good reason. There are likely to be very few albums released this year on which the tales are enhanced by a believable atmosphere that really does at times tug at the emotions, with there often being a desperation in Chris Links lyrics and vocals that few can match. Ultimately, this is a debut album whose quality almost beggars belief, such is the power and commitment of this talented quintet for whom a successful future should be theirs for the taking! Floyd EcoVillage – A Unique Event Center Nestled in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains is a facility unlike any other. The goal of this facility is to offer a beautiful event location at an affordable price while saving the planet at the same time. Even if you travel to Floyd every weekend, there is a good possibility you haven’t noticed the signs for the Floyd EcoVillage. Tucked away on 75 acres of pine forest, adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway, this event center offers a secluded location that can hold any type of event. The eco-friendly theme can be seen from the moment you pull up to the building. Natural parking lots and locally sourced timber frame welcomes you before you even enter the building. Walking around the back of the community center, guests are greeted to a large stone patio overlooking an amphitheatre and pavilion. Looking up the hill past the pond and bee hives, you will see the Bermed Lodge. The lodge, which has five single rooms and two double suites, is built into the mountain and completely off the grid, offering visitors three alternative energy sources to insure they are comfortable while staying in the hotel built underground. Joni Quesenberry, guest at the Bermed Lodge commented, “Our stay at the Floyd Eco Village was perfect in every way. The view of the mountains and pond were gorgeous from the covered porch.” From the back patio of the Community Center you can’t see the campground because of the lush trees but it is there. The quaint solar powered campground complete with a bubbling brook, clean bathhouse, fire pit, tree canopy, and the occasional deer sighting is available May 1st-October 31st. As you turn to enter the EcoVillage Community Center, you will see a roof glittering with solar panels and solar rods, reminding you once again, the dedication the owners have made to do their part to help the planet. Entering the Community Center, the first thing that hits you is the smell; the smell of wood to be precise. The facility is adorned with locally sourced timber frame everywhere you look. Wooden beams, trusses, molding, and window boxes can be seen at every turn. Speaking of window boxes, the window boxes are 16” deep. This is due in large part because of the SIPs panels used on the exterior of the entire building to keep the rooms cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Energy efficiency is very important at the Floyd EcoVillage. Although the building is impressive as far as green construction goes, what interests most people are the events that take place within. From weddings to Virginia’s Blue Ridge Music Festival, world renowned speakers to community involvement meetings, the

Floyd EcoVillage can accommodate groups from 5-250. Celebration Hall with its sprung dance floor is designed for groups from 50-250. With a professional lighting and sound system, as well as the largest electric projector screen in the area, this room can be set-up for concerts, weddings, dinners, or any event you desire to have. The rustic look of the wood beams combined with the modern feel of the electronics, allows groups the opportunity to create something very special. The cafe is sometimes more desirable for groups of 60 or less. The walls, painted by local artists, and the views from this room allow for a smaller function that doesn’t need all of the bells and whistles. It has wood tables and cafe style booths, which lends itself to family dinners or small business retreats. It is also connected to the commercial kitchen, which makes it a great place for a private dinner or cooking class. At 740sq.ft. the kitchen can be used by a home chef, canning your harvest or a professional caterer to feed a party of 250. Most recently, the Floyd EcoVillage has become a popular wedding destination. Families, brides especially, like the laid back atmosphere that allows caterers and alcohol to be brought in, while offering dishes and linens to be rented on site. Santina Krayer, mother of the bride explained, “The EcoVillage was a wonderful place for our daughter’s wedding.” The setting is breathtaking and the venue is beautiful. The staff are warm, friendly and listened to all of our thoughts and wishes and made this special day happen. Floyd’s Recording Destinations! In recent months, Windfall Studios has had many artists travel to Floyd from other locations in the U.S. to book recording sessions for their projects. These musicians either stayed a week or booked several long weekends throughout the course of the year. (We offer a bed and breakfast package for musicians who would like to stay on site.) We have recorded and produced projects for artists from California, Massachusetts, Florida, Virginia and Maryland in the last year. They all say that the “vibe” in Floyd seems to spur their creativity. Getting away from their normal surroundings takes their minds off of daily routines and lets them focus on their music. Windfall is not the only studio bringing in folks from around the country. Mark Hodges’ Mountain Fever Records and Travianna Records have signed some great new bluegrass, gospel and Americana talent, that will be recording at his Mountain Fever Studios. Joe DeJarnette’s Studio 808a specializes in recording oldtime music, recording musicians from around the country as well as locally. Studio 808a is in an old farmhouse with great “live” rooms made from all the old wood used to build the house. Back in 1922, the wood was easier to get than plaster and wallboard when it was built. In addition, the wealth of talent in Floyd and surrounding counties provides a staple of top studio musicians to help artists create the songs they envision, even if they don’t have their own band. Musicians like local fiddler Mike Mitchell, who has released a number of CDs of his own music, and singer Janet Turner have done some session work for the visiting artists we’ve brought in. Mike and Janet also recorded their own CDs at Windfall Studios. Old-time duo Mac and Jenny Traynham along with daughter Hannah, produced their last CD here and have also added their talents to other projects as session players. If a client needs backup singers, bass players, guitarists, banjo players or other instrumentation, it can be found right here in Floyd. 34

Third Floyd Yoga Jam a Complete Success!
Yoga enthusiasts from the entire East Coast reunited for the Third Annual Floyd Yoga Jam, the three day outdoor yoga and music festival, located in Indian Valley. Over 2100 attendees spent a relaxing weekend and were treated to an eclectic mix of local and world music after days filled with yoga classes, workshops, lectures and nature walks! “The Dancin’ Dakinis and the YOJam team have out done themselves this year!” said Jenifer Mahanes, a yogini and massage therapist from Asheville, NC. “The Art Village, fantastic food court, world class yoga, music and that yummy cider? I love it all!” Jenifer is referring to a new component to the festival, an area dedicated to the creation of art during the festival. Hosted by local artists, Lore Dieghan and Leia Jones, the YOJam Art Village was full of creativity the entire weekend. The Village offered fairy house building workshops, art classes by Katherine Devine, poetry workshops and interactive community art projects. Attendees created their own “prayer flag square”, a piece of fabric decorated with a personal wish, prayer or picture which were tied together and strung through the trees like Tibetan prayer flags. “The meadow designated as ‘Blissland’ is our home to daily yoga and meditation practice,” said Shirleyann Burgess, one half of the Dancin’ Dakinis production company. The large, colorful tents in Blissland overflowed with enthusiasts who had gathered to experience vipasana, awareness and chakra meditations. Yoga 101 and Yoga for Dudes classes were filled with beginners and those curious or new to yoga. Hundreds attended all-level classes with live music offered by MC Yogi, DJ Drez, Sean Johnson & the Wild Lotus Band and nationally known yoga teachers Cindy Lee, Katie Silcox and Dr. Saraswati. Many styles of yoga were represented; Vinyasa, Jivamukti, Ashstanga, Yin, Flow as well as Partner, Slackline and Acro Yoga. Also new this year, water lovers were treated to kayak trips on the Little River. Trips were organized, led and shuttled by Floyd local, Daniel Sowers of On the Water. Those not ready to rough it, rented Glamour Camping packages in the Glamping Village. ‘Glampers’ arrived to find their canvas tent set up and waiting for them, with a real bed, comfy bedding, lights, table
and chairs. Super cushy and big enough for a family, these units sold out and more are planned for next year! The large, Reserved Riviera creek-side camping slots were filled with groups of young families. “When people work and play hard, they want to eat well after. We strive to offer the best, freshest, local food options at the Yoga Jam Food Court,” said Laura Polant, the other half of this dynamic Dancin’ Dakini duo. Authentic Thai food, local pulled pork, root-beer floats, vegan donuts, vegetarian dishes, gluten-free choices, smoothies and raw foods were available to satisfy any taste buds. AFD, a new food truck company, delighted meat eaters with their delectable pork creations and Thai This, kept the crowd happy with spring rolls and spicy green curry dishes. Libations were provided by Floyd’s own, Red Rooster Coffee, Buffalo Mountain Kombucha, Foggy Ridge Cider and Salem’s Parkway Brewery. The Floyd Yoga Jam main stage rocked with a spectacular Friday show lineup and light show. Bob Sima’s acoustical guitar inspired and delighted the crowd. Rama & the Jais’ rockin kirtan got the crowds singing. Dirk Quinn, Lobo Marino and the Ragbirds had the crowd ready to dance for Nahko Bear & Medicine for the People. Saturday night’s musical offerings began with the local Deer Run Drifters, and were followed by kirtan masters New Orleans based Sean Johnson & the Wild Lotus Band and Luna Ray, from Asheville, NC. The pinnacle of this years’ YOJam event, was an incredible performance by MC Yogi and DJ Drez. Twin disco balls lit the late night stage with a hip hop dance party of spiritually uplifting lyrics and energetic beats. See you all in 2015, as we keep building our bridge of peace. Springhouse Community School at the Floyd EcoVillage Springhouse Community School (SCS), located at the Floyd EcoVillage, provides project-based learning opportunities for students in grades 7-12. SCS students spend their time seeking the knowledge and experiences that awaken their internal motivation for learning by engaging in projects of their choice. Under the guidance of school advisors, and with support from parents, every student develops a personal learning plan and receives developmentally appropriate levels of structure, accountability, guidance and freedom. Through regular one-on-one consultations with their advisors, students assess and reassess their learning until they are satisfied with their projects. The result is a presentation and final assessment of the project, which is then assigned credit hours based on time spent and the quality of the product. A placed-based educational philosophy is incorporated into the SCS model by using the local community and environment as a starting point for learning concepts in social studies, science and other subjects. Advisors assist students to connect with knowledgeable mentors for each project and to ensure that the broad scope of high school subjects and standards are incorporated and comprehended in order to meet graduation credit requirements. This approach helps students develop stronger ties to their community, enhances students’ appreciation for the natural world, and creates a heightened commitment to serving as active citizens. Students at SCS work on independent or group projects involving hands-on, real world learning either at the EcoVillage facility or around the community of Floyd. At the EcoVillage facility, projects may involve culinary arts in the licensed commercial kitchen, outdoor projects in the gardens and forest as well as learning about green building design and construction. Each student meets with a math and reading/writing specialist to develop an individualized plan for their learning in these critical subject areas that enables them to work with support at their own pace and level. SCS embraces the philosophy that by developing a stronger connection to ourselves, we cultivate a stronger connection to the world around us. Every morning, students and staff visit a solo “sit spot” in the terrain surrounding the school. After this full sensory awareness experience, they reconvene in small groups to share stories, insights and questions that may

have emerged. This consistent core practice cultivates personal attributes of inquisitive focus, quiet mind and reverence and also hones the capacity to observe subtle changes within oneself and in the world of changing seasons. Students can also choose to regularly engage in other reflective, creative, or contemplative practice including journaling, yoga and qi gong, dance and movement, dream work, meditation, drawing, painting and collage. SCS is committed to maintaining an advisor to student ratio of no more than 1:8 for the 2014/2015 school year. In this inaugural year, students will have access to advisors with a broad range of education and experience. Advisor Ezekiel Fugate has a Master’s Degree from Yale in Environmental Engineering and a Bachelor’s Degree in Math and Engineering from UVA. He has operated an organic vegetable and dairy farm with his wife, is an avid wild crafter and perennial plant propagation enthusiast as well as being a licensed permaculture designer. Jenny Finn has a Ph.D. in Sustainability Education from Prescott College and a Masters in Social Work from Colorado State University as well as a certification in Clinical Pastoral Education. She recently served as Director of Spiritual Life on a Semester at Sea program with UVA, where she coordinated religious and spiritual life for a shipboard community of 700 faculty, staff, students and crew. This included coordinating religious services and studies for the Christian and Jewish community, teaching daily meditation practices and offering opportunities for healing and for building a spiritual life through creative expression. Joe Klein holds a Masters in Community Counseling from Radford University and is a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in helping adolescents dealing with depression, anxiety, grief and loss, trauma, eating disorders and addictions. He is the founder of the teen retreat program, Inward Bound Mindfulness Education, and also an avid gardener, hunter, athlete and carpenter. Virginia State Archeologist Tom Klatka recently conducted a small dig in Floyd County at a site next to Little River on Roger Road, near 221 N. Two one-meter square test pits were carefully excavated, the dirt sifted through a sieve and the pieces of stone and ceramic artifacts found in this process laid aside for further study. He was assisted in this by Roanoke College student intern Amanda Paul and by his wife Ferri Lockhart. Residents living in the Left Bank neighborhood had shown him numerous arrowheads and pieces of pottery that they have found, as they worked in their gardens set in the sandy loam bottom land beside the river. Tom quickly identified these artifacts as coming from a band of the Totero or Tutelo Indians who lived in the areas now known as Roanoke, Montgomery and Floyd Counties at the end of the 17th century and for an unknown period of time before that. After researching the culture, Will Bason summed it up with, “I think their fourth night spirit release ceremony has a lot of resonance with the Tibetan Book of the Dead. They believed in reincarnation, and had gay marriage. They were noted by other tribes for their proficiency in music, dance, and sorcery. Floyd had progressive Native Americans.” With obscure research being more easily accessed online and with new archeological digs, we develop a more complete picture of the daily life of the original “Floydians”, the Tutelo Indians. Being Earth Savvy…got dirt? Going green is easy, right? All we have to do is recycle, cut back on our water use and buy more energy efficient appliances. As we all know, this takes time and effort and not to mention money. As Americans, we are very conscious of how much energy we use. Each month we are reminded of this as we open the electric or fuel bill and prepare for the worst. Most people know that more efficient appliances help with our monthly budgets. Unfortunately, heating and cooling costs are typically not taken into account, and if they are, most people are more likely to replace a unit with another of the same kind rather than look for a more sustainable option. So, what are these sustainable options? The two that are most common are solar and wind. Some places do not have high enough wind speeds for a wind turbine. Solar panels are only going to be most efficient on clear sunny days and need to be placed facing south. Both of these options, while great options, are not going to work all the time. The goal and hope with any appliance or car designed to save energy or fuel is that it will pay for itself in a matter of time. What most people have and do not even realize, is an energy source right under your feet. That’s right - dirt! While most people will call a system that uses below-ground heat a geothermal system, they are sometimes referred to as ground-source heat pumps or geoexhange. Geothermal heating and cooling systems are quickly gaining attention. They are rated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as the cleanest and most efficient heating and cooling systems available. These systems are designed to work with the environment. The idea of heating and cooling your home with the ground seems simple enough, but there are various ways to go about it. Have you ever been in an unfinished basement or even a root cellar? It is cool in the summer and warmer in the winter. While above ground temperatures fluctuate from season to season, temperatures below the ground stay around 55°F year-round. A conventional heat pump, when it is really cold or really hot (below 30°F or nearing 90°F) outside will have to continually catch up. This means that it will run more often in order to compensate for the energy escaping from the house. Outside units function by exchanging the air outside with the air inside your house. So, when there are extremes, it is harder to find warm or cool air to exchange. Furnaces can consume a lot of fossil fuels while trying to maintain temperatures, plus they can sometimes generate unwanted heat just by operating. Granted, good insulation and windows will help with most of this, but the electric or fuel bill will still fluctuate and sometimes surprise you. Since the ground stays a fairly constant temperature and there is no outside unit, a geothermal system does not have to continually make up for less-than-helpful outside temperatures, and there is no defrost cycle needed. Instead, the exchange is much easier and therefore more efficient.

Here is how it works: • Depending on where you live and whether you have a water source to tap into, like a well, trenches are dug and pipe is buried to capture the heat from the earth. • Trenches and lines (called loops) can be horizontal or vertical. Loops can be “open” to incorporate a well, or “closed” to allow an earth-friendly anti-freeze solution to circulate. • As the liquid is circulated through the lines, it absorbs the heat from the ground during the heating season, and releases heat from the lines during the cooling season. • Some people incorporate radiant floor heat and/or a water heater. Both of these options can be operated using a geothermal unit. Now, as I mentioned, any energy efficient system operates by costing more up front but lowering bills so that it pays for itself. Geothermal is no different. It is estimated that geothermal systems save at least 40% in energy costs. Some even experience up to 70% savings. Also, from now until the end of 2016, there is a 30% tax credit for qualifying systems. Since every situation is different, it is hard to say how much you might spend on a geothermal system. With more people becoming interested, prices are changing. Plus, there are usually excavation costs. These systems can heat and cool any size house, but like any appliance or machine, will only operate at its best if it is maintained regularly. As with any investment, it is best to research your options and consult HVAC technicians who have been trained in geothermal. Geothermal dealers will also be the best resource when planning the system’s design. HVAC companies, like Tinbenders, Inc., work with excavators and contractors (for new construction) to make sure that the design meets the needs of the homeowners and is set up for optimal operation. I encourage you to further research geothermal and educate yourself in this energy-saving investment. If you are like me, pictures are also helpful in helping it all make sense. Tourism Office Launches New County Tourism Website & Visitor Center This Fall the Floyd County Tourism Office launched the new official Floyd County Visitor website at www.VisitFloydVa.com. The site will be used by the new tourism office, the county and town governments, the chamber, regional tourism initiatives for all Floyd marketing, promotion and correspondence with visitors, media, travel writes, tours and tourismbased requests. The website will be actively updated and maintained and include tourism-related business listings by category, calendar of events, E-news, maps, and social media links. Additions to the site later include sections on Group Travel, Weddings, Media & Film, Guided Tours, a Floyd Video Channel, Floyd for Kids and the creation and marketing of seasonal itinerary ideas for visitors. “We are excited about the launch of the site to give both visitors and the community a go-to place for continually updated events and business listings,” shared Floyd County tourism director Pat Sharkey. “There are many wonderful private efforts to promote Floyd, but there was a need identified to have one public site that has staff updating events and content and has a more formal connection to media, state and regional initiatives.” The Tourism Office is working in partnership with the Floyd County Chamber of Commerce to coordinate the community’s tourism related work, presently focused on the new website, a new updated hard-copy Visitor Guide, and a new expanded Visitor Center in Floyd.

New Floyd County Visitor & Information Center
The new Floyd Visitor Center is located at 109 East Main Street across from the county courthouse next to the Blue Ridge Restaurant. The site will house a new expanded Floyd Visitor & Information Center, along with Chamber and Tourism Offices. “It is a perfect location for a visitor center and is large enough to offer a display area that highlights different tourism-related businesses with rotating exhibits. There is ample room for promotion of all Floyd tourism businesses and events, as well as regional and state information.” With the Chambers help, we will also have an area to promote other Floyd businesses that are not tourism-related, but important contacts for residents or for those considering moving to Floyd. We are working toward staffing the Center 7 days a week. We still have quite a bit of renovating ahead of us, but we encourage folks to stop by! Autumn Weddings In Floyd County, Virginia, we are blessed with four seasons. All of them beautiful, and one of them so spectacular that folks drive distances just to see what we see and to partake in the abundant pleasures of Autumn. Each season has its metaphor in the language of love and marriage. Spring celebrates the beginning of a new stage of the relationship as the couple shares their vows. Summer revels in the growth and flowering of love. Winter makes merry! It’s a time for families to gather together. We celebrate the gifts the bride and groom bring to each other’s lives, as they become a family. Even a couple who chooses not to raise children becomes “family” to one another, just as their respective families join together to support the marriage. And in the fall, it’s as if the entire world is saturated with rich, abundant color. About marriage, Autumn says, “Your love has matured from friendship to best friendship, and from attraction to something even greater. You have cultivated this relationship, weeded out selfishness, watered with care and consideration. Your love has come to fruition in deep, abiding love.” I have been blessed to experience sixty-four turns of the yearly wheel, of which about half have taken place in my favorite location in the world. Right here. Every year visitors travel the Blue Ridge Parkway in mid to late October to leaf watch and to enjoy the many attractions in our region. Parents and alumni come to the area to watch Tech football games. And one more epic phenomenon begins to emerge: Engagement Season. Engagements happen all year, of course. Traditionally, we think of engagement season as occurring from Thanksgiving to Valentine’s Day, with its peak being Christmas Eve. But in reality, engagement season begins on the first really cold night. You know that night, when you hear it’s going to frost. You bring in your plants. If you’re a girl or woman, you do the closet switch, bye-bye pastels; hello earth tones! And if you’re a couple planning to marry in the following year, the chilly air is like a whisper in the ear, “It’s time to make our move!” There are many people (like me) who love Autumn so much, it’s as if they are awakened from slumber into a state of heightened awareness! They get out of their air conditioned homes and cars and hit the hiking trails. They drink pumpkin spice lattes, roast root vegetables and adorn their entryways with mums. They winterize their homes and cars, and prepare for frosty nights ahead. Many couples have been moving toward marriage for a while. They know it takes time to plan a wedding and make it all happen. I officiate many elopements and small weddings on a short timeline, but for an average to larger

scale wedding it really takes at least six months and preferably a year to make it happen smoothly, with minimum stress as possible. If you are lucky enough to live in Floyd County, Virginia and environs, or you are a frequent autumn visitor here, you already know how gorgeous it is when nature puts on the “leaf show”. If you’re visiting for the first time and are in the beginning stages of planning a wedding, I hope you will consider Floyd County as a destination for you and your guests. In either case, planning from here or planning a wedding here via phone and internet, the earlier you begin, the easier it will be and the more vendor choices you’ll have, because we all get more and more booked for the coming year as the season progresses. For spring and summer weddings, I recommend getting your folks lined up as soon as possible. If you’re planning a fall wedding, you have a bit more time. And that said, given the one year timeframe, you’re good to go from September on! I once officiated a beautiful fall wedding for which the couple had chosen a pumpkin wedding cake with chocolate fudge frosting. I know it may sound like an odd combination. Troika Gallery Focuses On Alice Walker Troika Gallery, located in charming downtown Floyd, Virginia, is in its fifth year of business. Our street front location in the Station Building is the perfect site to showcase some of the South East’s best regional crafts. Troika enjoys the patronage of many local shoppers looking for that something special in the handmade realm, and tourists discovering this special little gallery in the mountains of Virginia. We exhibit woodworking, including furniture, glass, jewelry, ceramics, multi-media works and textile. We are very proud of the local crafts in the Appalachian region and feel honored to be able to expose them to customers through special shows featuring one or more artists. In this issue of The Floyd Magazine, Troika Gallery would like to focus on one of our textile artists, Alice Walker. Alice makes her home in an old apple orchard on a mountaintop in Floyd County, Virginia. Attracted by their beauty, she chose to live in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where family, raising children, creating a home, and work in the studio is central to her life. Alice’s mother designed and made most of her children’s clothes. She sewed, knitted, crocheted, embroidered, quilted, upholstered and more. She shared her love for textiles by teaching Alice and her sisters these art forms from a young age. When sewing clothing for herself as a teenager, Alice would often have ideas for fabric design. As a teen it was clear she was ready to create her own fabric designs.
Since 1989, while attending the Art School at Virginia Commonwealth University, she found her area of interest in fiber arts and fell in love with the Batik technique. In classes the prospectus was to introduce different layouts for repeat design when designing for industry. She liked the spontaneity and directness of the process. It allowed her to play and experiment with endless possibilities for pattern and color. Once she was introduced to batik and the handcraft movement, Alice had a model for a career in studio arts. She produces each piece in her home studio, and exhibits in galleries and juried fine arts and crafts shows throughout the Eastern United States. Artists, for more than 2500 year have used wax and dye to create patterns and images on fabric, a technique known universally as Batik. With brushes and a pen-like tool known as a tjanting, and wax, Alice hand-draws onto pieces sewn from silk, and then colors with fiber reactive dyes. The designs result from one or more layers of alternately waxing and dyeing. Finally, all wax note to self: is removed from the fabric and a raise garage doorbeautiful design is revealed. Alice approaches her work in a playful, before backing out. experimental way. She is inspired by the mystery and beauty of the natural world around her.
