On The Cover The cover shot was taken on our property on Cannadays Gap road, back when we lived there in 2013. This view of Buffalo Mountains is one of our favorites. It snowed overnight and in the morning, I stepped out to take a look. So wonderful to have this memory in a photo.

Over five hundred ducks floated down the Little River in Floyd during the Floyd County Duck Race The event, held as a fundraiser for the Chamber of Commerce and the Floyd County Visitor Information Center, had a successful first year with good weather and over 200 people in attendance at On The Water in Floyd, which was the site sponsor. Laura Polant’s duck was the first to cross the finish line, followed by Katherine Sower’s second place duck, and Booke Williams’ third place duck. First place prize was $300, second was $200, and the third place winner received $100. On The Water staff and volunteers captured all the ducks once the ducks crossed the finish line, fulfilling the chamber’s commitment to “No duck left behind.” The event featured local band, Spoonfight, performing on the Turman Log Home portable stage. The band’s sound and instruments along with the food trailer were powered by Sustain Floyd’s Voltzwagon, a solar power trailer that provides portable power. This was the second time the Voltzwagon was used for a public event. Chateau Morrisette Winery sponsored the music and The Landmark Group, LLC sponsored the ducks. Additional sponsors were: Apple Ridge Farm, Citizens, Thomas and Wall Real Estate, and Tuggles Gap Motel and Restaurant. Floyd County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Floyd County Tourism Office, operates the Floyd County Visitor Information Center at 109 East Main Street. The chamber offers promotional support, networking and educational opportunities to the business community. Bringin’ It Back to the Farm! All successful events need a great venue and that’s exactly what an increasing number of local event coordinators and civic groups are finding at Chantilly Farm. The 200 acre property, tucked away in the rolling hills off Franklin Pike in Floyd County, is home to several new events as well as others that have chosen to relocate to this growing venue. The Floyd Livestock and County Fair, hosted each September by the Floyd County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, celebrated their 9th anniversary by moving their one day event to Chantilly Farm with hopes of utilizing the venue’s wide open spaces to grow in future years. “We’ve had so many space constraints when hosting the fair at the county extension office, so relocating to Chantilly Farm will give us a much greater opportunity to expand on our livestock demonstrations and agricultural activities,” said Vicki Spangler, one of the County Fair’s organizers. The County Fair isn’t the only event taking advantage of the constantly evolving spaces at Chantilly Farm. The Second Chance Prom cancer benefit, held each June, recently relocated their event to the venue’s new 4,000 square foot indoor barn-style facility. “Chantilly Farm has several unique qualities that impacted our decision to relocate our event. They have great facilities for RV’s and tent camping which our attendees really appreciate and the grounds are absolutely beautiful and within close proximity to most people in the Floyd area,” commented Laura Sparks, the
8

event coordinator for Second Chance Prom. The profile of the venue is growing as a regional destination as well. In early 2015, Chantilly Farm received official designation as an affiliate venue on Virginia’s Crooked Road Heritage Music Trail. The designation is reserved for venues that highlight and promote the rich musical traditions of Southwestern Virginia. The Chantilly Farm Bluegrass and BBQ Festival held each May over Memorial Day weekend will soon celebrate its 6th anniversary and has quickly become one of the largest bluegrass related events in the region. Even the local school system in Floyd is ready to take advantage of Chantilly Farm’s natural setting. Floyd County High School has chosen Chantilly Farm as the official site for its regional cross country meet held each fall. “I am very excited about having Chantilly Farm as our new cross country venue. It’s beautiful, scenic, and spectator friendly. The course itself will be challenging but not overly so,” commented Mark Carper, the high school’s new cross country coach. Additional programming will be added in 2016 that includes more live music, arts related events, and events that focus on camping. Plans are also underway for expansion of trails and other outdoor recreation at this venue. For more information on hosting your next indoor or outdoor event at Chantilly Farm or for a full schedule of events, visit them online at www.chantillyfarm.com, connect with Chantilly Farm on social media, or call (540)353-5898.

Growing Up in Floyd A Musician is Groomed Nick Weitzenfeld, 14, grew up in Floyd and was exposed to music at an early age. “We always had music in the house,” says Nick. Jesse Weitzenfeld, Nick’s dad, says, “Nick seemed to gravitate towards the guitar, but I wanted him to start out on the piano. I thought it would give him a better musical foundation.” Dad’s plans were thwarted however, when Nick’s grandmother, Judy Weitzenfeld, purchased for his eighth birthday, guitar lessons at the Floyd Music School. A new guitar followed and by then, Nick was hooked. “He saw a video of Doc Watson flatpicking the guitar and that was it,” says Jesse. “That was all he wanted to do.” For months, Nick wouldn’t listen to anyone else. “He was obsessed with Doc. He wasn’t interested in anything that did not have Doc Watson’s name on it.” When Nick was 9, he entered his first guitar contest at a local fiddlers’ convention. He won the youth category. “Nick is competitive. He loves sports, he loves to compete. It’s fun for him. When he realized he could compete against other guitar players, it was like a light bulb went off. I think it was a positive outlet for him, a good motivator,” said Jesse. Nick dedicated himself to contest playing. He began working with Scott Fore, a National Guitar Champion from Radford. “Scott taught Nick to see music differently. Scott’s approach to music is outside of the box. He opened Nick’s eyes about melody. A melody isn’t just a series of notes; it’s a musical idea that can be expressed in different ways. Scott showed Nick that there were no limits. Nick is naturally creative and really embraced this way of thinking,” says Jesse. Scott Fore says, “What I like about Nick’s playing is the way he takes melodic lines that he creates and mixes those with things he hears other players do to create his own voice on the guitar. To develop your own voice on an instrument is a worthy goal for any musician, and Nick is doing just that.” Nick’s mom, Leigh Anne, says, “The thing I like best about Nick’s playing is that it’s always interesting. It’s never boring, and he never plays anything the same way twice.” When Nick was 10, he began attending a bluegrass jam at the Floyd Country Store. At first, he was a spectator, but soon gathered up the nerve to join in. Nick started going every week, and the regulars embraced him. “They were glad to have a kid in the jam. That’s the
10
www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine
thing about bluegrass, it’s family friendly music, most players start young, and they really embrace the youth. Having that kind of support helped Nick to develop confidence playing with other people.” Around this time, Nick was invited to join a local youth band called The Blackberries. Nick stayed with the band for several months, and got a taste for performing bluegrass with a group. A few months later, in January of 2013, Nick helped form a new group called the Gravel Road Bluegrass Band. In March of 2015, the band released their first CD on the Hitching Post Records label, entitled “First Time Around”. Nick is also honing his skills as a songwriter and solo performer. Local songwriter, Scott Patrick, had this to say about Nick, “I think Nick is one of the most well rounded young musicians in the area. I’m amazed at his ability to craft original song ideas and the depth of his writing, which reaches well beyond his years.” Nick has also been sitting in with a bluegrass band called WoundTight, when he can. According to Chris Martin, WoundTight’s frontman, “Nick is a talented and mature player for his age. Nick knows how to contribute to the music when playing with a band. When playing with WoundTight, Nick is tasteful and careful to respect the other players. These attributes make Nick a very, desired player.” In August, Gravel Road traveled to Galax to compete in the Old Fiddlers Convention, where they racked up an impressive array of ribbons. Addie Levy placed 2nd in the Youth Mandolin competition. Adam Bishop placed 3rd in Youth Bluegrass Banjo, and Nick placed 2nd in Youth Guitar. The band placed 3rd in the Youth Band competition. Nick competed again as an adult and got 5th place in Adult Guitar. So what’s next? According to Scott Fore, “Nick is an extremely talented young man who possesses the drive and determination needed to achieve greatness, as he has already proven. This is a quality that all the greats possess, and Nick is no exception. His talent and drive will take him wherever he chooses to go.” Check out Nick and Gravel Road on Facebook and YouTube, under GravelRoadBluegrass. Nick also has his own YouTube channel. For booking, contact GravelRoadBluegrass@gmail.com.

Contra Dancing in Floyd, Virginia Dancing in one form or another has always been a happy pursuit in Floyd County. The 1890s Floyd newspaper, the “Mountain Boomer,” usually printed news from national or agricultural bylines, but the local news was definitely social. Listed were many reports of summer evening dances in private homes. And if the fiddler was late, the dance, such as the Virginia Reel (an early form of the contra dance), might commence anyway with the crowd clapping to the beat. American 17th century contra dancing grew from British traditions mixed with French (contredanse) influences and regional variations, and it persisted in kitchens and parlors in the United States after traditional English dances across the ocean faded from popular practice. The Kentucky running set is thought to be the oldest surviving form of English country dancing. Fast-forward a century, and in the grand American tradition, contra dance has developed its own unique character through time, revived in the 1970s to become wildly popular once more. In western Virginia today, one can contra dance regularly in Charlottesville, Crozet, Richmond, Blacksburg, Dayton, Roanoke, Harrisonburg, and of course, in Floyd held on the second Saturday of each month at the Jacksonville Center for the Arts. Modern contra dance has caught the attention of groups across the country, practiced with new dance energies and musical styles for all ages. Swing music, Cajun, Gypsy Jazz, and Ragtime might slip into the band’s repertoire, adding another danceable dimension. One could easily hear a 200 year-old tune (Chorus Jig) along with a newly composed dance (Al’s Safeway Grocery) or a piano, fiddle, and guitar paired with tabla, pennywhistle, accordion, or clarinet. A contra dance presents an evening of easy, relaxed fun with lots of grins and the energy of a live band. The contra dance is set up just like the Virginia Reel, with a long line of couples. In groups of four, two couples walk the moves of each dance together as instructed by the caller, until they complete the figures, progressing on to the next couple to repeat the same pattern over again. At some point, the music takes over, and by the end of the dance, each dancer has done a star, chained across, swung, promenaded, and right-hand-turned everyone up and down the line, with the band encouraging it all in four-count musical flourishes. It’s easy to get carried away with the joy and fun of it all, smiling, moving together with the music. As one dance ends, people choose new partners and are off to dance again until the last waltz of the evening. The Floyd Contra Dance, sponsored by Blue Ridge Country Dancers, first set its roots in nearby Roanoke. The dance series began in September, 1989 at a hall in SW Roanoke near the Grandin Theater. Two dancers, Burt Claxton and Becky McKenzie, got the initiative
12
www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine
started and others joined in to help, including Kathleen Ingoldsby, a New England contra dance enthusiast who had moved to Floyd in 1980. A good dance floor is a key element for dancers, and after the Grandin hall was slated for repurposing, the volunteer group danced their way through seven or so different dance spaces at churches, YMCAs, and public facilities in Roanoke. By 1996, the dances were held at the Roanoke Catholic Lower School gym which, unfortunately, also became scheduled for new uses later. At that point, in 2001, the group did a “test run” dance on the Sun Music Hall’s wonderful wooden floor, and the move to Floyd was certain. After dancing to overflow crowds at Winter Sun for over twelve years, the Floyd Contra Dance celebrated 25 years in September, 2014 at a new location, the Jacksonville Center for the Arts. It’s common for 50 to 70 people to attend the dance, and the new location has proved popular. The group opened their 2015-16 season September 12th with a favorite local band, “Toss the Possum,” and a young North Carolina caller, Jacob LeGrone. A dedicated group of volunteers’ sets up the sound, does the publicity, books the bands, and welcomes the dancers each month. So go ahead and treat yourself to an evening of dancing fun with lots of smiles and live music. The group welcomes beginners and experienced dancers of all ages—a separate family dance is even in the works. Come alone or with a partner; dress is casual and softsoled shoes that glide work best. The dance starts at 8 p.m. with a beginner lesson at 7:35. Admission for each dance is $8 or $6.50 with a student ID. For more information, see the group’s website www.floydcontradance.org.

Bringing Floyd to the World One Bottle at a Time
14
Floyd, Virginia is a special place. Everyone who experiences Floyd knows it. For a small town, it does a lot of exporting. Floyd County Christmas Trees are found throughout the country. Floyd’s artists and artisans have their works displayed in homes all over the world. Our Old Time Music can be found in music collections and podcasts just about everywhere. Many local businesses are representing Floyd on a National and International stage, too. Chateau Morrisette is one of those businesses. Since the late 1980s, Chateau Morrisette began distributing its hand crafted, Floyd County wines at retail stores and specialty wine shops starting in Virginia, then into North Carolina, and last into West Virginia. Today, Chateau Morrisette distributes wine throughout seven states and ships products made within Floyd County, direct to consumers in over 30 states. This allows many more people to learn about Chateau Morrisette and its home in Floyd County. In return, Floyd has brought much to Chateau Morrisette. Its small town charm, unsurpassed musical roots, and its location along the national treasure we call the Blue Ridge Parkway, brings people from all over the world to experience Chateau Morrisette and all the wonders of our mountain community. Production for Chateau Morrisette in 2016 is expected to be the highest it has ever been. With higher levels of production and more territory to cover, Chateau Morrisette has opened itself to hiring more people. One person who has just moved up into a very important role is Brian Smyth, Chateau Morrisette’s Winemaker. Brian came into the position well versed and experienced in the wine industry. His love of wine began with home brewing beer. Seems odd, but after learning how to home brew, he fell in love with the process of fermentation. A Virginia Tech student majoring in Biology and Environmental Studies at the time, Brian began taking a few general wine courses followed by a summer internship with Keswick Vineyards in Charlottesville, VA where he was a vineyard intern. “I loved winemaking because it was farming during part of the year, and working in the winery the other part of the year,” said Brian. Following college, Brian and his wife decided to spread their wings and go to another wine region, Oregon. Hard work
www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine
is essentially what makes Brian so experienced. He explained, “family and friends thought working in a winery was a pipe dream, and I did have odd jobs to string together between the harvest work I was doing at the time including jobs such as working in the Tasting Room and unloading trucks at Target.” While in Oregon, Brian started thinking about his future as a winemaker, “The one thing I noticed was how competitive the industry really is, and work experience only seemed to take you so far. What I realized was those who held higher positions possessed more education and credentials.” This realization led him to apply and to be accepted into Oregon State University’s Enology program where Brian could get a second undergraduate degree. But, as a smart, ambitious, and aspiring winemaker, he also applied and was accepted into a Masters program at Australia’s University of Adelaide. Brian and his wife relocated to Australia where Brian received his Master of Oenology degree at the University of Adelaide. Being in South Australia also allowed him to work at the Australian Wine Research Institute where he mostly conducted lab testing which was another valuable experience. Once he was finished with his degree, Brian and his wife decided to move back to Virginia, not only because it is a growing wine region, but because they would be near their families. A friend from his Masters program had alerted him that Chateau Morrisette was looking for an Assistant Winemaker. After applying, he was hired a little more than a week later and has since moved up to become the Winemaker and Enologist. As Chateau Morrisette’s Winemaker, Brian is excited to work with some Virginia grown grapes and different fruits. In particular, he is fascinated by the nuances associated with Petit Verdot, Petit Manseng, and Viognier, all very popular varietals in Virginia. “I’m also really excited and challenged to produce some of the very popular wines that Chateau Morrisette is known for including Our Dog Blue, Red Mountain Laurel, Sweet Mountain Laurel, and the Muscadines,” says Smyth. In the cellar, Brian will focus on keeping staff safe, longrange planning, managing harvest demands, and insuring a consistent and delicious end product. Chateau Morrisette wines are part of what makes Floyd so special.

Let the Sun Shine In!
Take the SustainFloyd Solar Home Ramble through Floyd County on Saturday, October 17th Floyd, Virginia – Just in time to enjoy the autumn sunshine and changing leaves, both residents and visitors will hit the picturesque roads of Floyd County, VA on Saturday, October 17th to see a dozen homes and buildings that have gone solar. The community group, SustainFloyd, is sponsoring the county’s first “Solar Home Ramble” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in which homeowners and building managers throughout the county will open their doors to explain how the sun is powering their lives and businesses. Tickets for the SustainFloyd Solar Home Ramble, a fundraiser for the organization, are $15 at www.sustainfloyd.org and will be available after September 15th. Children, 12 years old and younger are free. The Solar Home Ramble will be take place, either rain or shine. Following the tour, a reception at 4:30 p.m. will feature a fascinating speaker, a cash bar, and solar power vendors who can answer questions that Solar Home Ramblers may have. “Floyd is a leader in the solar movement,” says Billy Weitzenfeld, Vice-President of SustainFloyd and Executive Director of the Association of Energy Conservation Professionals. “Whether a visitor is just curious about how Old-Time musician Mac Traynham uses solar to make his beautiful banjoes or someone is considering installation of solar panels right now, this will be a fascinating tour.” Several of the houses and buildings can be accessed by walking

through downtown. Additional homes, the Floyd EcoVillage, and a farm may be seen by car. Tour-goers will be provided with maps and may use GPS. Jonathan and Kerry Fay Vandergrift’s traditional ranch home on the outskirts of downtown Floyd will be among those on the tour. The Vandergrifts had rooftop solar panels installed last year by Affordable Energy Concepts. “We love having a clean, low maintenance energy source—and a $25 electric bill during the heat of the summer has been a great bonus!” remarked Mr. Vandergrift. “We committed to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, starting by changing how much electricity we use in our home. Once we made small changes, like unplugging appliances when not in use, solar was the next logical step for us.” Ricardo Brown, a SustainFloyd Solar Home Ramble organizer who heads SolShine Energy Alternatives, LLC, described the tour: “From a 160 year old downtown historic home to a modern, lake-side paradise in Willis, this tour will show how nearly any house can go solar.” Brown added, “As a local solar installer, I get to witness the excitement customers feel when they invest in a photovoltaic system. With this tour, people will have an opportunity to share in that excitement and come away with a better understanding of how these systems work and the benefits they convey.”

FloydFest 2015 High-flying trapeze acts, fire dancers, and a blazing wooden Phoenix were just a few of the jaw-dropping new attractions at the 14th annual FloydFest summer outdoor music festival. This year’s “Fire On The Mountain” themed event offered fans the ultimate boutique five-day festival staycation filled with music, healing arts, outdoor activities, and more. Located on a pristine 80-acre plateau in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, FloydFest featured over 70 artists and performers on 10 timber frame stages, over 100 vendors, artisans and crafters, a comprehensive Healing Arts Village, a Children’s Universe and Teen Scene, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure. Following a renewed focus on logistics for 2014, FloydFest 2015 turned inward for inspiration, going back to the festival’s early roots and embracing a family-centric vibe coveted by fans that had been with FloydFest since its humble beginnings. This was certainly seen in the artist line-up, which featured a healthy dose of FloydFest fan favorites. Opening headliners: Leftover Salmon, and Sunday headliners: EmmyLou Harris & Rodney Crowell, took fans on a delightful journey back to FloydFest’s musical roots. Brandi Carlile, who won the hearts of FloydFest fans during her 2012 debut, brought the crowd to tears with a deeply moving and inspiring Friday night performance. Highly-anticipated newcomer, Grace Potter, more than delivered on Saturday night, bringing down the house with an energetic, crowd-pleasing set. Following her performance, an immense wooden Phoenix structure, filled with messages of hopes, dreams, and fears left by FloydFest attendees, was lit ablaze in the main field. During what many considered the pinnacle of the entire
18
www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine
festival, fans watched in awe and admiration as the Phoenix lit up the festival site in a picturesque glow. The headliners weren’t the only musical acts shining at FloydFest 14. Revered fan favorites including: the Drive-By Truckers, Trampled By Turtles, Keller Williams, and the Sam Bush Band brought crowds to their feet, while FloydFest newcomers, Shovels & Rope and First Aid Kit, were highly lauded for their debut performances. A slew of up-and-coming performers brought sounds from across the South ranging from Appalachian roots music to New Orleans Jazz, rounding out one of the best musical line-ups in FloydFest history. FloydFest’s unique location in the Blue Ridge Mountains offered fans a variety of fun outdoor activities, including Osprey-guided hikes, canoe trips on the Little River, mountain bike rides, and a 5k trail race. The Healing Arts Village offered daily yoga classes, massages, and meditation sessions, while the nearby Children’s Universe offered an array of fun activities for kids. In the Global Village, fans could attend daily workshops and panels, or relax at the ENO Hammock lounge. As the sun went down, the main field was lit up with trapeze shows, aerial performances, and fire dancers who left the crowds on the edges of their seats. FloydFest is driven to be the best music festival experience of our time, celebrating music, art, and life in an intimate, visually stunning environment. Across-The-Way Productions would like to give an immense thank you to all of the staff, volunteers, artists, vendors, and fans that helped make FloydFest 14: Fire on the Mountain, the best FloydFest yet! Thank you, Roger Gupta, Rich Cox, Summer Brown, Drea Cunningham and Meagan Reynolds for the wonderful photos.

A STUDIO CAREER IN FLOYD COUNTY
YOUNG ARTISTS CHOOSE FLOYD FOR THE HOME OF THEIR NEW CERAMICS BUSINESS Six miles north of the Blue Ridge Parkway on VA Highway 8, you come to the quaint town of Floyd. It is a hidden treasure in the Blue Ridge Mountains, boasting art galleries, antique stores, a boutique designer clothing store, and good restaurants. It’s a little gem of a town. Troika Gallery of Contemporary Crafts is one of several galleries in town. Troika Gallery displays the work of numerous craftsmen. The crafts are unique in execution and style, featuring wood working, ceramics, jewelry, blown glass vessels, and various other media. This season, Troika showcases the work of two ceramic artists who are new to the area. David Eichelberger and Elisa Di Feo moved to Floyd County last fall. David and Elisa met in graduate school at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and since have shared a residency at the Appalachian Center for Craft. They have taught at various universities and craft schools. David and Elisa collaborated and joined their businesses into TWO|ONE Ceramics. Together, they design and produce porcelain tableware while also creating their own individual work. David Eichelberger, originally from Roanoke Virginia, recently finished a three-year term as a Resident Artist at the Penland School of Craft, in Penland, North Carolina and has plans to pursue a fulltime professorship at near by Ferrum College. He makes ceramic objects with a functional sentiment and a sculptural approach to form. David’s work, though functional, uses a simple palette highlighting pinch marks in the clay, evidence of the time and labor involved in his work. He employs drawn images on some pieces to create a loose narrative structure. David’s approach is thoughtful and reflective. His work has been shown extensively throughout the U.S. Elisa Di Feo runs TWO|ONE Ceramics, a design venture aimed at bringing handmade tableware to a broader audience. She lived in Floyd during her apprenticeship with 16 Hands member Silvie Granatelli from 2005 to 2007 and is excited to continue her studio pursuits while raising her growing family of three daughters in this beautiful rural setting. As a vessel maker, Elisa is attracted to the volume of form, and its potential to entice the viewer to touch. She uses subtle curves and oblique lines to create objects for contemplation. As well as showing their work at Troika gallery, David and Elisa are new members of the bi-annual 16 Hands Studio Tour. Please view their work at Troika Gallery, across the street from The Floyd Country Store, on Locust Street in downtown Floyd, Virginia. Also, visit their website at www.troikacrafts.com. 22

The Medium is the Message Ten years ago, we started “Green Label Organic” with the original concept of designing and delivering fun and positive messages via the very best organic cotton, Made in America T-shirts that we could produce. The kind of designs and messages people would really like to wear because they not only looked great, but said something about them as well. Over the past ten years, we have created over 120 such designs. It’s Just A Hill- GET OVER IT! Most of our designs have done well and we have received lots of positive comments from people all over the world. Recently, we released a design we call It’s Just A Hill. The overwhelmingly positive response to this design took us by complete surprise! It’s Just A Hill could very possibly be the most inspirational message we have ever put out there. People from all walks of life have written, called, or told us directly at events about what this design and message means to them or has meant to someone they love and to whom they had gifted one of these shirts. We have heard so many inspirational stories about people who have overcome life threatening diseases, disabilities, age challenges, career changes, gender issues, and physical challenges by taking one step at a time until they conquered their own personal “hill.” We have listened to countless wonderful tales about hiking, biking, climbing, and paddling feats they once thought were too big to tackle but went after them all the same; only to then emerge on the other side of
24
www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine
the “hill,” victorious, whole, and proud. The “Medium” In addition to the many messages we take pride in sending with our shirts, we take equal pride in the “medium” we use to convey those messages. Our medium, by design and by conscious choice, is a Made in America, top quality, super soft, premium, and organic, cotton T-shirt or top. We take these premium tees and tops and gently garment wash them with low-impact dyes (better for you and better for the planet) and then we print them with a patented water-based printing process that uses no PVCs or other harsh chemistry and is totally breathable. Shop the Outlet Most people purchase Green Label Organic T-shirts online or at green, organic, and outdoor specialty retailers, such as REI... but since you’re right here in Floyd (our “humble headquarters”) you can come down to our new warehouse outlet store where we display and sell all of our designs at discounted outlet prices. In addition to our own products, we also feature several other Made in America, organic and sustainable fun products including soaps, lotions, infant/toddler clothing, artisan gifts, and more. Natural Does NOT Have To Mean Wimpy! Thistle Hill Botanicals products are well researched and thoughtfully created. Do any of us understand why many personal care products have so many horrible chemicals and metals in them? With my many years of studying and practicing natural health, and a too close of a brush with the Big “C,” I have made natural and organic a priority in my life. Have you tried a few of the natural deodorants on the store shelves today? Most people have tried more than a few...one is too sticky, one just smells for a bit, and some do not work. Well, I have solved the problem with “Finally” Natural Deodorant. Not only is our “Finally” Natural Deodorant totally natural, it is effective! It is made in an eco-friendly and sustainable manner in regards to both the ingredients we use and the processes we use to manufacture it. Have you heard about XenoEstrogens? They are compounds found in many personal care products today that cause endocrine disruption! The delicate endocrine system basically controls our entire body. These chemicals and their effects are harming all of us men, women, and children, alike. Our skin is porous and chemicals, preservatives, and binders actually go into our bodies when applied to the skin. With your help, we can improve our health by using wholesome and effective natural products, reducing the chemical load on our bodies as well as the earth, thereby preserving its natural beauty. My “Shark Tank” Story: Earlier in 2015, I took a business course offered by the Floyd Economic & Development Authority. It was a very informative program that lasted about two months. At the completion of the program, there was a competition. About one-third of the attendees stepped up to the plate and wrote a business plan and pitched their businesses to a panel of judges. It was quite an experience for me! I won first prize which was a grant and reduced rent for 12 months in the fabulous new Floyd Innovation Center! This beautiful center is part solar and has a large timber 26

frame structure. Our production is now happening in The Floyd Innovation Center and our expansion is well underway. As I write this, I am in the midst of our Indiegogo campaign which will last until October 9, 2015 and possibly longer, if we reach our goal. There are some fabulous perks with this campaign! If you would like to be part of our efforts to create natural products, please visit us at http://igg.me/at/finally and choose a perk for yourself. Please accept my gratitude if you choose to help contribute! Supporting local and regional businesses is a passion of mine as they are critical to the future survival of our local economies. Thistle Hill Botanicals is currently collaborating with Red Rooster Coffee on a product. We are excited about the idea of working with other Floyd businesses! If you are looking for the perfect holiday gift for your “coffee lover” friend or loved one, this is it! Coffee Body Scrub! The aroma is amazing and not only will it wake you up, it will nourish your skin. Created with locally roasted and fair trade certified coffee beans from our favorite place: The Red Rooster! With over 30 years experience in natural healing and herbalism, our products are well researched and thoughtfully created and proudly made in Floyd, Virginia, USA. There is never any animal testing and, whenever possible, ingredients are locally sourced. Thistle Hill Botanicals is also available online at http://thistlehillbotanicals.com/. Spoon Fight is a rock band with the classic three-piece formation of guitar, bass, and drums; where each member of the group really pulls his weight. In this case, guitarist Luke Thomas is all over the strings, playing lead, adding rhythm, and on top of it all, bringing the smooth main vocals to the mix. His brother, Jake Thomas, is the percussionist for the group. He’s been called the human metronome. Jake brings a steady, while at the same time, complex and full set of beats to every performance. Brother Jake also adds back-up vocals. Isaac Wright, long-time friend of the two Thomas brothers, fills out the sound with deep, steady, bass lines, while adding his own brand of complexity and creativity. The resulting sound is very rich and full, yet very tight. Though this band is young in age, ranging from 22 to 25 years old, they have approached their music with discipline and dedication for a full seven years. Weekly practices with pre-determined agendas and goals for each rehearsal have paid off in many ways. Their “sense of purpose” comes through in their performances which are spot on. Their songs are tight and impactful, without sacrificing fun. The timing and the steadiness with which the music is delivered seems to create an irresistible urge to dance or at least move one’s feet with most everyone attending a performance. Not surprising, since this audience reaction is a top goal for this committed trio. Their main mission, other than self-expression, is to see their audience having fun. Spoon Fight continues to play at a variety of venues, from restaurants, private parties to ski resorts. They still enjoy opening for larger bands, and they also headline at venues and festivals in the Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina region. They are scheduled to headline one more festival this year, Twisted Cow Harvest Festival 5 in Rocky Mount, VA. This year has been a year of expansion for the band as they have reached out from their solid, established base of local gigs and performance experience. By year’s end, the band will have played 40-50 shows, including larger venues that are known predominantly as musiclaunching venues, like: Local 506 in Chapel Hill, NC, and The Camel, in Richmond, VA. The band has also released their full-length self-titled CD this year. The Spoon Fight CD was released in June to a packed house at the 400-capacity Dogtown Roadhouse. It is all original music and is being sent to 20 indie and college radio stations in the three-state area. Spoon Fight is not new to radio and TV, having played live on WSLS-TV 10 and also, on WUVT. Spoon Fight’s original songs are collaborative projects from the whole band. The members have each brought their share of lyrics, music,

and concepts for songs. The band works as a group until a finished product develops. Predominantly rock, their songs can also be described as groove rock or alternative rock. Their music carries obvious elements of blues and funk, as well as occasional reggae. Though the band has enough originals to fill an entire evening of performances, they like to throw in songs by other artists as well. Well-known favorites by artists such as ZZ Top, Jack Johnson, Sublime, and Pink Floyd, not only offer familiar tunes to the audience, but also serve as the band’s acknowledgement of their musical influences. It is noteworthy to mention that all the Spoon Fight members were home-schooled and attended Blue Ridge Mountain School in Floyd Virginia. The Thomas brothers spent part of their childhood in South Africa and then moved to Floyd. Isaac Wright, who has resided in Floyd for most of his life, met them in this Virginia mountain town. As teenagers back then, homeschooling allowed for creativity and gave them a well-established base that combined freedom with self-discipline, common in home-schooled children. It was at Blue Mountain School, however, that the three collaborated on their first musical piece as part of a self-prescribed class project. All three band members spent two years in a mixed-aged high school class at the small, private school which continued to offer them a blend of academic education, personal responsibility, and accountability with a freedom to explore their own interests. Another notable characteristic of their alternative education is their ease and comfort in interacting with not only their peers, but with all age groups. And these young men exhibit this in their personal dialogues as well as through their music. It’s not unusual at their shows for the dance floor to be filled with not only young adults, but children, teens, professionals, and retirees; all moving to the music together and enjoying the energy of this band. Spoon Fight members: Luke, Jake, and Isaac, are very appreciative of the support of the Floyd, Virginia community; from the encouragement of their families and school experiences, to the support that they receive as musicians from members of the community. They recognize that their background combined with the influence of the region have made a difference in their lives and in their music. 10/9, Fri − Parkway Brewing, Salem, Va − 5:30 pm 11/14, Sat − Charley’s Waterfront, Farmville, VA – 7 pm 12/31, Thur − Dogtown Roadhouse, Floyd, VA − 8 pm 12/31, Thur − New Year’s Eve with Deer Run Drifters

The Healing Tree Wellness Center Celebrates 5-Year Anniversary Healing Tree Wellness Center opened their doors five years ago in 2010. What started as a dream to bring holistic healthcare to Floyd, VA, has expanded to a well-known Wellness Center working with clients from all over the country and across the world. “My dream has always been to help as many people as I can achieve their health goals and to live more vibrant lives,” says co-owner Ivan Anderson. “In the beginning, my focus was on Shiatsu which is similar to Chiropractic and Acupressure medicine. Over the years, I have incorporated Hair Analysis which has been a great complement to my Shiatsu practice and has become a rapidly, growing part of our business. Seventy-five percent of our Hair Analysis clientele are from different parts of the country and a few are from Europe as well.” Co-owner Dr. Lynise Anderson, N.D., chimes in, “I’m not your mother’s wellness educator!” Dr. Lynise believes that knowledge is the way out of suffering and into health. “Every session with me, individual or group, in the classroom or online, is inspiring, enlightening, and empowering. You are the authority of your own life and your own health. I have the tools, resources, and knowledge that can help you become the best advocate for your own well-being. Focusing more on the person who has the illness, rather than focusing on the illness the person has, is fundamental in helping my clients regain and maintain their health,” Rounding out the Healing Tree core team of practitioners is

I believe that when the body and mind are able to relax, much of the tension we carry will simply melt away.” She shares similar sentiments regarding her Beginner’s Yoga Class. “I love watching my students fall in love with the practice (of yoga) and more fulfilling is watching my students float out of the room at the end of class, experiencing the bliss that yoga brings to their lives.” Healing Tree Wellness Center specializes in pain relief and health recovery. The company provides holistic therapies, such as: Hair Analysis, Shiatsu, Massage, Yoga, Life Coaching, and Online Wellness Education courses. 16Hands In the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains there is an enclave of craftsmen who have solidified deep friendships as well as a network of creative, technical, and professional support over the past 30 years. Drawn to the area by its beauty and tranquility, they established working studios, vital careers, and a way of life. From the beginning, they shared many common goals and apprehensions; they offered each other feedback, assistance, and courage. In the fall of 1998, this commonality blossomed into a formalized association called, “16 Hands.” The craftsmen recognized a shared desire to deepen the relationship with those who appreciated their work and invited all into their studios. Over the years, many craftsmen had attempted this in individual ways by hosting sales on different dates, independent of one another. It became apparent, however, that by joining resources, they could offer a broader more enjoyable experience to a greater number of people by creating a tour of all the studios on the same weekend. So the “16 Hands Studio Tours” was born and tours were offered twice yearly: the fourth weekend in November and the first weekend in May. As always happens, things change and a few members moved away while new creative young people joined the group. It continues to evolve and will continue to do so while maintaining the highest level of skill, talent, and artistic achievement. The 2015 fall sale will occur on two weekends this year: November 21st and 22nd and November 27th, 28th and 29th. This tour is a free event whereby visitors download a map or grab a brochure in town and follow the directions that guide them along the roads which connect the studios. It is a festive atmosphere with food and drink and a big welcome awaiting all who participate. Some of the items you will find to take home include fine functional pottery and woodwork. This exciting Floyd County event also includes stunning fall views while touring between studios, lively conversations, and festivities held at each studio as well as a quaint and charming downtown in Floyd, VA. Each studio is set up to display the work of the member as well as a visiting artist who has joined them for the year’s tour. This fall, six visiting artists will be participating: Gail Kendall, 40

Michael Hunt, Naomi Danglish of Bandana Pottery, Ron Sutterer, Don Davis, and Alice Walker. In the spring of 2000, each craftsman opened their doors to welcome visitors year round. Every year, the studios host new and talented guest craftspeople. Take a tour of Floyd County and explore the studios of 16 Hands members. For over a decade, the group has shared a desire to deepen their relationship with all those who appreciate their work. If you are interested in viewing the craftsmen work, other than at tour time, e-mail for a brochure about studio hours and other details. www.16hands.com 16 Hands - Fall 2015 Studio Tours November 21-22 Sat. 10:00am to 5:00pm • Sun. 12:00pm to 5:00pm November 27-29 Fri-Sat. 10:00am to 5:00pm • Sun. 12:00pm to 5:00pm

The Old Church Gallery Look for the bright blue roof at 110 Wilson Street, next to the Town’s new walking path, and catch the spirited character of Floyd County through on-going exhibits and programs at the Old Church Gallery. This small house is a welcoming place to visit and become acquainted with volunteers who gather and record past memories and creations. Sparked by an appreciation of the stories and creativity of past generations, the Old Church Gallery has explored and documented the creative ties that are woven throughout our community. Colorful threads, link generations of families in Gallery art exhibits, oral history programs, and history displays. As the Gallery’s Director, Catherine Pauley, recently remarked, “We enjoy discovering that the past was not perfect—for us, it means that the present doesn’t have to be perfect to be of value.” The exhibits are quite wonderful and it’s worth seeking out the house with the blue roof on Wilson Street near the Hotel Floyd. The Old Church Gallery has a specific nonprofit educational mission, one that focuses awareness on Floyd County’s local culture, folklore, and the creative arts with the motto, “We remember, We collect, We protect.” The current exhibit, “By Ear & By Heart: A Century of Floyd County Music,” uses images, sounds, and stories to showcase the “Floyd County Sound” as well as the individuals who have been making music from the early 1900s until now. Over forty families from around the county have contributed to the exhibit. Visitors can hear selections from the earliest recordings made by county musicians, examine a radio, a pump organ, and a Victrola that would have been at home in a well-appointed parlor of the 1930s. They can also delight in looking at handmade dancing dolls. There are also stories upon stories about: the Indian Valley neighbors who figured out how to build beautiful phonographs and started their own Blue Ridge Phonograph Company, brothers who played together in bands, families tracing music makers back three or four generations, and singing masters traveling around the county, teaching four part harmony and shape note singing. A partial list of Floyd County natives whose music has traveled far beyond our home communities include: Blind Alfred Reed, Elder Golden Harris, Randall Hylton, Janet Turner, and the Floyd County Ramblers. The exhibit also features musicians recorded for the Library of Congress in the 1970s: the Korn Kutters, Dent Wimmer, and Sam Conner. Many local gospel and family groups round out the exhibit. The Old Church Gallery holds permanent collections of local artifacts, textiles, and handcrafts—small treasures such as an early soapstone sundial, a spring bowl, woven coverlets, painted baskets, and prehistoric stone tools. All of the exhibits, artifacts, and oral history 42

collections are enriched by the folk lore and the folk art of the community. Our Floyd Story Center oral history program collects stories, film, audio, transcriptions, and topical photos. From 2007-2015, the project connected Floyd’s WWII generation with high school students and college mentors and produced 42 short films. “Roots With Wings” oral history project is a partnership with Radford University’s Sociology Department, Scholar Citizen Initiative, Floyd County High School, and The Old Church Gallery’s Floyd Story Center. In 2015, four interviews (audio, video, and transcripts) resulted in eight short films and scans of over 200 personal photographs from 1940s in Floyd County and the WWII overseas tours of duty. One family member wrote, “The work that you do is not only needed to record the WWII veteran stories for the sake of history, but the movies, in particular, are a real blessing to the veterans and their families.” The Old Church Gallery was formed in 1978 and was incorporated in 1981 as a non-profit 501(c)(3). Named for the historical Presbyterian church building that was our first home, the Old Church Gallery’s all volunteer staff continues the programs that reveal and share the treasures that make the community what it is—kin to all other communities. Yet, special in the little idiosyncrasies that make it “this place”—“this home.” At Old Church Gallery, staff members are currently working to train a community based oral history team, to organize archived materials so that others may access them, and to continue building the permanent folk art collections. We are always seeking friends and neighbors who have time and talents to contribute to these programs. Plans for fundraising to expand our facility, are underway. We’re excited about achieving the space to do justice to our collections and programs. There’s a lot to be done, but one of the many strengths of our volunteers is that we take time to sit on the porch and enjoy each other’s company. Travel safely wherever your journey may lead you. The Old Church Gallery is open from mid-April through December. Exhibits are offered free of charge. Visit us Fridays from 2 - 5 PM and Saturdays 10 AM – 1 PM or anytime by appointment. www.oldchurchgallery.org; www.floydstorycenter.blogspot.com

Artful Weddings in Floyd When planning a wedding, the first thing most couples consider is the venue. Ideally, just as home décor matches a couple’s lifestyle and tastes, so should the setting for their ceremony reflect the couple’s preferences and aesthetic. Settings can be elegant, grand, and formal, or rustic, laid-back, and relaxed. I love the entire range of weddings and enjoy the variety of beautiful venues in the area. One of my favorite experiences was a day in which I officiated a large formal wedding one afternoon at a winery and then changed my white clerical scarf to a tiedyed one for an intimate evening wedding in a butterfly garden. Both weddings were lovely in their own way. Whether in an outdoor setting or an interior space, the venue ideally serves as a sacred space that reflects what inspires the couple, makes them feel good, and reflects their values. For many couples, simplicity is an important value; for others - fun, uniqueness, and adventure rank high on their list. Couples who are getting married for a second time, or coming to Floyd for a couple’s getaway destination wedding, or those who simply want a meaningful and beautiful ceremony for a few close friends and family members, or those who want to balance affordability with fun and festivity, may choose to have an relatively private ceremony and follow up with wedding announcements and a party at some later time. All of these elements come together in a down-to-earth, homey, playful, colorful, and quirky new venue for unique elopements and small weddings. I’m happy and grateful that after 45 years of exhibiting my art in venues around the country, and seventeen years of teaching individuals and groups about how to create sacred space for prayer, meditation, and ceremonies, I opened an art gallery, bookstore, and small wedding venue here in town that demonstrates in a very practical way, what I’ve been teaching and writing about. In the Kanta Bosniak Folk Art Gallery, visitors will find a funky and fun environment, rich in vibrant art that has been created to inspire and entertain: • Mandalas – circular designs that represent wholeness, completion, and harmony Icons – portraits that symbolize development to highest potential and using one’s gifts in service to others • Hearts – symbols of love and relational happiness
44
www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine
• West African Adinkra – inspired pictographs for positives such as the power of love, community, abundance, linked hearts • Madonnas – love, compassion, caring, tenderness, the constant presence, immediate accessibility of Divine Love and help in any circumstance • Crosses and Medicine Wheels that represent the vast loving power of God that is always working in our lives and relationships • Quotes from Scripture and spiritual love poems • And much more! The gallery includes an interview room where the couple can relax and discuss ceremony preferences, a book and print store, a boutique of hand-stitched and embroidered, crazy-quilted ring bearer-pillows, romantic gifts, vintage pretties, and a wedding chapel room. By necessity, hours are as unconventional as the venue. Because of wedding responsibilities and coaching, I can’t really have hard-set hours. The gallery can be open by appointment and “happy-stance,” so please call for a private gallery visit or look for the “gallery open” sign. I’m going to be open from 11 am - 5 pm, Wednesday thru Thursday, Friday nights until 9:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons as my schedule allows. Rev. The Floyd Artists Association This year, the Floyd Artists Association has had visitors from all fifty states as far away as Anchorage, Alaska. It has seen many world travelers from: Santiago, Chile; Paris, France; Mallorca, Spain; Surrey in the United Kingdom; Shannon, Ireland; Lancashire, England; Dublin, Ireland; Quevero, Brazil; Stuttgart, Germany, and even Dubai in the United Arab Emirates! While it’s wonderful to know that Floyd art is traveling around the world, one of the things that the Floyd Artists Association loves is to promote its art close to home. People visiting Floyd (or who are lucky enough to live here) can take classes from expert level artists who are members of the Floyd Artists Association (FAA). FAA is a grass-roots co-op with fourteen artists who work together to display their own art in their gallery which is located in The Station (across from the Floyd Country Store). They also exhibit in other galleries, restaurants, and museums around the Blue Ridge Area. Local artist, Karen Sewell, grew up in the rolling hills of Floyd, VA and returned here after she retired. She teaches special classes, as well as a regular Wednesday class in various media. Whether your interest is in pastels, oils, charcoal, or acrylics, she is skilled in all. She holds an on-going, year-round class called “Anything Goes in 2-D” on Wednesdays from 2:00 to 4:00 pm where students get individualized attention based on their interests. As Karen says, “Any 2-D medium, any subject, and get individualized instruction and motivation in an encouraging, supportive learning environment.” She can be contacted at artsit@swva.net or 540695-0003. Karen Sewell will also be teaching Oil Painting for Beginners/ Intermediates on October 10, 2015 from 9 am to 5 pm at the Jacksonville Center. Tuition for jax members is $44 and nonmembers are $55. The focus of this workshop will be landscape painting and the challenges of capturing light, value, and composition with the option to carry details to comfortable levels with minimal effort and great effect. This will not be a follow along 46

class, but each student is encouraged to bring their own reference material, such as a photo that they have taken. The student will work from that image to create an original painting unique to that individual. She will also be teaching basic portraiture in November, so check out JacksonvilleCenter.org for details. Painting with Pastels will be offered by Gretchen St. Lawrence in a two day class from 9:30 to 12:30 each day. The dates will be determined based on interest in the class. Gretchen is well known for her pet portraits that bring out the personality of the animal. She is a virtuoso in pastels. Call her at 540-6950003. Ron Campbell, known for his detailed pen and ink drawings of local barns and lovely country scenes will periodically offer classes in the gallery at The Station. This is a great opportunity to learn from a knowledgeable and patient teacher. Ron also offers a two day class from 9:00 am to noontime. Dates are based on interest. Contact him at floydartists@gmail.com or 540-745-7367. Marsha Slopey Paulekas often teaches private as well as group classes for beginning to advanced students in basic drawing to understanding color. She teaches painting using watercolor, oil, or acrylics. Marsha shares her techniques about interpreting a photograph to make an interesting and attractive painting and holds outings to explore plein air painting. Marsha teaches classes in Floyd between April through October. She’s an enthusiastic teacher that converted a small house in Downtown Floyd into a studio, teaching space, and lodging space. Guests can come and stay, take classes, and enjoy all that Floyd has to offer. Her studio is called, “Marsha’s Studio” and she offers group and private instruction for all levels. She also offers weekend retreats and plein air painting in our glorious countryside! It would be a great experience for not only a group of artistic friends, but the Red Hat Society, or a creative family get-together. Contact MarshasStudio@gmail.com or call her at 540-745-4848.

Sophisticated, Investment Apparel For The Discerning Woman A touch of Europe, New York, and the Blue Ridge Mountains, The Boutique, a creation of owner and artist, Jeanie Harman O’Neill is a one of a kind shopping experience, nestled between the Farmers Supply and the Blue Ridge Restaurant. Jeanie conceived the concept of a boutique in the early part of 2002, after years on the Arts & Crafts Show circuit with her original one of a kind handbags. “I wanted a business that would allow me to continue making and selling my handbags and also become a platform for my original art and clothing designs,” says owner Jeanie O’Neill. After years working retail out of the downstairs of her art studio on East Main, a space opened up in 2010 in the heart of the Town of Floyd and is now what is known as …..The Boutique! Jeanie spent her childhood in the Town of Floyd (her father was Dr. Chris Harman, DVM) and after majoring in Phys. ED. and Dance in college, modeling in New York, and a life as a Navy wife; Jeanie and her husband, Tom and three children returned to Floyd in the 70‘s, and purchased the old home place on East Main, (built in 1898 by her Grandfather, Dr. Jabez Harman). Moving back to her small town allowed Jeanie to begin to create a life of entrepreneurship. She opened and operated the areas first dance studio for approx. 15 years. During this time, she developed the love of painting following in the footsteps of her mother, grandmothers, and great aunts. Though Jeanie considers herself mostly a self-taught artist, she has participated in many classes and in so doing, has created a style that is uniquely hers. Jeanie’s philosophy about clothing and style is deeply rooted, “My mother, Frances, taught me a great deal about fashion of which she had two beliefs. One was that classic designs were timeless and the fabrics they were constructed from made them so. The other was purely practical. How much will it cost per day to wear? To her, clothing was an investment, something that you enjoyed for years. She would rather buy one fabulous piece and enjoy it over time, than have a closet full of less expensive, out dated clothing.” Jeanie has made great efforts to bring to Floyd, a look that follows
48
www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine
that philosophy… style, elegance, timeless, comfort, and individual, in other words - different! It is very important to her to support USA made products & designers with small companies who are willing to work with her in single item purchases. This protects her customers from investing in clothing that is readily available in other stores which sabotage individuality. Several clothing collections are highlighted in The Boutique. One of her most powerful lines is PLANET: pima cottons made in Peru and matte jersey made in Miami. Planet is considered an investment collection in that each season, designs and colors will co-ordinate with past seasons collections. This allows the customer to build a wardrobe that fits her life style in comfortable elegance, every day, or while traveling the world. Jeanie is also proud to say that approx. 35% of the items in The Boutique are designed by her and made locally. From her one of kind handbags and totes to her own clothing collection, J. O’Neill Originals, consisting of natural fabrics such as: silks, linens, worsted wools, and are prewashed. For the convenience of her customers, this concept allows Jeanie to fill special orders. What makes The Boutique unique … −Personal service and attention with a relaxed, fun environment −Wardrobe consultation and appointment based for individual attention −Clothing and accessories designed and created by local seamstresses for Jeanie −A planet retailer, designer Lauren Grossmen −Jewelry, scarves, layering pieces, etc. are handpicked to create a full service experience Fashion can be fun! And shopping for it should be, too! Hours: Wednesday & Thursday 1:00 to 4 or 5ish, Friday & Saturday, 11:00−5ish Other days and times by chance or appointment. 540-230-7546 - 105 East Main

The Green Man Story Outside the Green Man Inn, the wisteria curls around the natural branch trellis handcrafted by local wood artisan, Chris Deerheart. A collection of Green Man sculptures grace the outside wall. Innkeeper Cameron Woodruff explains about the history of the iconic Green Man. “He appears throughout the world, but is very common in European buildings and churches. He’s usually depicted as surrounded by leaves, often having a leafy hair and beard.” The Green Man covered in foliage is seen in the tales of King Arthur in “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.” There’s even a variation of the European “Father Christmas” who has been shown wreathed in ivy and suggesting a connection with this archetype of woodland spirit. As a personification of the woods and green, growing things, the Woodruff ’s thought it would fit in well with the beautiful green countryside of Floyd and attract guests who love the earth. “I think the comment I hear the most is that it’s a lot larger than it looks in the pictures,” said Cameron Arie Woodruff about his business, the Green Man Inn. With two bedrooms and a large living room with fold-out futon, the size of the suite often takes people by surprise. “It’s great for two couples traveling together or a large family,” Cameron added. The Green Man Inn is a business owned and operated by Patricia Robin Woodruff and Cameron Woodruff. It was started in 2012 with the idea of providing convenient town lodging for several people to stay and explore all the wonderful aspects of Floyd. The Woodruff ’s transformed a dull office space into a very Floydian and artsy lodging. The Autumn bedroom has a knotty pine accent wall with tree branches reaching up to the ceiling and wood-burned leaves fluttering down the wall. With delicate sponge painting around the room and the words, “Once upon a time in Floyd…” echoing the beginning of this fairy tale (which is also seen in the library just down the street). The Spring room has curling ferns around the walls, rising from the green rug, giving a fresh, open feel to the spacious room with a bunkbed that sleeps two on the bottom and one on the top. “We didn’t want it to look like the Hilton, we wanted it to be very Floyd,” said owner, Patricia Robin Woodruff. Certainly the groovy, color-changing fireplace in the Spring Room adds a neat ambiance as well as being cozy in winter. The Inn is furnished with lovely antique furniture and 50

patchwork quilts purchased from the local antique stores, Chic’s Antiques and Finders Keepers, as well as displaying local artwork by artisan, Rhonda Withington, and art by others as well. “It’s great that Cameron is a blacksmith and was able to make the toilet paper holder and coat racks,” said Patricia Robin Woodruff. She is an artist as well and crafted the kitchenette countertop with its wood burned leaves and an artistic rendition of the barn (that became the Jacksonville Center for the Arts). The countertop is finished off with a durable, glossy coating of marine epoxy. The kitchenette is a new feature of the Green Man Inn installed just this year. “We’re still keeping it the same price, but people can now cook their own meals, making it easier for a large family to stay through the week.” The kitchenette takes up one wall of the large living room. The living room is decorated in different tones of warm wood, browns, and greens with a knotty pine wall and a cozy electric fireplace in the very center of the room. The Green Man Inn is just down from the stop light in Floyd. It is set back from the road with beautiful trees out front and off-street parking (across the street from Chic’s Antiques - a three story building with all kinds of treasures.) Cameron shaped the earth sculpture of the Green Giant out front. The Green Giant’s hair changes with the seasons: summer Stella de Oro lilies give way to winter ivy. He was inspired by an earth sculpture in the botanical gardens in Cornwall. Patricia Robin Woodruff said, “People come from all around the world to see the sculptures in the Lost Gardens of Heligan. We wanted something like that, something to add to the arts culture of Floyd, so that people passing through town could see that Floyd is neat and artsy and a great place to stop.” It seems like it’s working because there have been many people who stop and get their photo taken with the Giant. Cameron, the Innkeeper, lives on site and is able to share lots of information about the county with guests. “I love telling people about all the great things in Floyd,” said Woodruff.
