Moina Belle Michael (August 15, 1869 – May 10, 1944) was an American professor and humanitarian who conceived the idea of using red corn poppies as a symbol of remembrance for those who served in World War I. Miss Michael was born in Good Hope, Georgia and her family farm originally encompassed 2730 Lamar Poss Road. She became a teacher in 1885 and later became a professor at the University of Georgia. Miss Michael was in Germany when WWI broke out in August 1914, and escaped to Rome to return home to the US. In Rome, she assisted around 12,000 US tourists to seek passage back across the Atlantic. In 1917, Miss Michael took a leave of absence and volunteered to assist in the New York-based training headquarters for overseas YWCA workers. It was here that she was inspired by the battlefront-theme poem “In Flander’s Fields” by John McCrae. Miss Michael wrote a poem in response called “We Shall Keep The Faith” and vowed to always wear a red poppy as a symbol of remembrance for those who served in the war. After the war, she returned to the University of Georgia and taught a class of disabled servicemen. Realizing the need to provide financial and occupational support for these servicemen, she pursued the idea of selling silk poppies as a means of raising funds. In 1921, the poppy was adopted as a symbol of remembrance for war veterans by the American Legion and the Royal British Legion. Today, red corn poppies are used all over the world to support veteran causes. Known as the "Poppy Lady" for her humanitarian efforts, Michael received numerous awards including a Liberty ship named after her (SS Moina Michael), a U.S. Postal Service commemorative stamp honoring her lifetime achievements, a section of U.S. Highway 78 named after her and was named to the Georgia Women of Achievement Hall of Fame. Moina Bell Michael retired from the University of Georgia in 1934, and published an autobiography in 1941, The Miracle Flower: The Story of the Flanders Fields Memorial Poppy. She lived an amazing life and truly made a difference in our world! The town of Good Hope, Georgia hosts an annual festival and celebration in her name.
