“Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; is something you design for the present. Jim Rohn

What follows is a short selection of projects. They represent the range of experience in architecture and design that I have acquired through collaboration and practice. A small representation in the pursuit to develop the unknown.

POND HOUSE t h e

r e s i d e n c e

Evelio Pina & Associates Bayamón, Puerto Rico

This single family residence was designed to be located in a secluded mountainous region of Puerto Rico. By the owner’s request water was to be present in all spaces within and around the home. This pushed design to utilized water not just as a feature but as a driver and definer of space and circulation. A series of colonnades are used to delineated the presence of water and define an edge between exterior and interior. The main shared living space was given a double height curved ceiling. By elevating the ceiling and have glazing immediately under it access to the roof top garden and natural ventilation and light are maximized. To the client’s satisfaction the ever presence of water, the heavy use of stone facing and the abundance of vegetation gives the house a feeling of been built from a tropical pond.

The floor plan was to be organized with water not as a feature but as an intricate spacial condition.

office

This project was developed as a study into the concept of a self-sufficient living environment, a “Vertical City capable of sustaining its own residents. Over a million square feet of program requirements of housing, office and retail within the constraints of the site determined its vertical reach.

residential

During the pre-design phase it was conceived that biophilic principles should be integrated and become drivers of function and design. The result is a high rise that intents to produce all the energy and food for its in-house population and a surplus for those participating in the commerce within the site.

This multifamily project was design for Path Stone, an organization dedicated to developing housing for the elderly to Energy Star and Green Communities Certification. The requirements for sustainability I f desired in the future it could comply with LEED certifications. The building has no A/C units since it is located in the central hills of Puerto Rico where temperature is adequate and natural ventilation is constant. The single loaded corridor connects 32 units, a multi-purpose room, offices, and amenities that include a roof top garden. Utuado, Puerto Rico

The Office of Marvel & Marchand Bayam贸n, Puerto Rico

To change a decades old baseball stadium to a FIFA standards soccer stadium proved to be an exiting and challenging project. The Municipality of Bayam贸n has become the home of football in Puerto Rico. After its completion the field has hosted an array of renowned soccer leagues and teams. The Barcelona selection, one of the highest level of soccer playing teams tested to their satisfaction the grounds.

north - south The existing playing field for baseball did not followed a north to south axis. FIFA requirements determined the new precise orientation of the field along with the a new facility to house four teams simultaneously.

The project proved to be challenging do to the time constraint the Municipality had imposed. It was less than 8 months from design to completion. Thanks to the expertise of The Office of Marvel & Marchand Architects the task was completed to the satisfaction of the Municipality, the home team and its fans.

Anderson Mason Dale Architects Golden, Colorado

One of several collaborations during a period of six months with Anderson Mason Dale Architects. This planning exercise was the successful effort of studying the existing infrastructure of the Colorado School of Mines campus and proposing a concise and effective growth plan. With supervision of AMD principals and coordination with the client’s existing documentation and studies the planning exercise was assembled and delivered through a series of diagrams. The result demonstrates the optimum capacity and conditions within the boundaries of the campus and the town of Golden Colorado and the possibilities for expanding their current campus and its impact.

EDSA, Jonathan Marvel & The Office of Marvel & Marchand Cataño, Puerto Rico origin of rum throgh landscape design

70 % of the rum consumed in the United States comes from Puerto Rico, from that the most consumed brand is Bacardí. The company has always been an architectural patron and for their new visitor center they selected the top three architecture firms in Puerto Rico to compete. We understood the client’s whish to create an architecture that spoke of the product’s history and vision. To that we responded with a complete experience of product, process and place throughout the entire campus.

A 1960’s structure placed in the center of the campus was repurpose to house living samples of the company’s soul. Visitors get to see the logo alive.

P L A C E

Bacardi’s architectural heritage is continued with a series of new cutting edge designed buildings. They speak to the traditional architecture already in place and enhance the visitor’s knowledge and experience of the site. This pavilion placed at the top of a mound frames the spectacular view to the bay and keeps respect to the traditional buildings on site. pavilion

Philadelphia bicycle transit center

team: location:

Randal Hatley, Micah Holroyd, Fernando Rivera Denver, Colorado

The Philadelphia Bicycle Transit Center Competition was initiated was created by the Delaware Valley Green Building Council to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, traffic congestion, and noise pollution by promoting ridership. The goal was to develop a bicycle transit center for the city of Philadelphia for its expanding urban infrastructure and growing population of bicyclists. Having to meet LEED requirements and a very prescribed program teams were encouraged to think how the center would engage the city. The response from the team came as a diagrammatic organization to the offered program and its architectural transformation into a bridge. The structure behaving with parasitic architectural principals, anchored itself along side an existing bridge in the heaviest transit avenue.

Gathering / Connecting / Sheltering The main design drivers for the installation were to gather the adjacent areas into a central form and to connect to the surrounding activities, while providing shelter from the elements. Instead of creating an enclosed, self-contained form, it was opened up to allow for natural the lawn and surrounding event space.
