ver the past couple of weeks, London has experienced incredibly cold winds and light snowfall. With winter just around the corner, there has never been a more appropriate time to pull out some cute (but functional) footwear, specifically a sturdy pair of boots. Boots are the one item we never get tired of repurchasing in the colder seasons, because let’s face it, can you ever really have enough pairs? Whether they’re suede, rubber, or leather, we undoubtedly speak for the entire female population in stating that great boots are a staple item in any closet for autumn and winter. As students, we are all faced with the need to wear stylish boots, while overcoming weather that is absolutely unbearable. So in order to combat these pressing issues, we’ve found some amazing boots that look great and are winter-weather proof (we promise). Remember, the weather might be terrible, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look good.

The first snowfall has already hit London, and that means it’s time to bring out the boots, coats, mittens and scarves. F&LS member, Xin Yang, shows us her favourite way of looking cool when it’s cool outside. Don’t be afraid to play with prints – a pair of printed leggings is the easiest way to brighten up a blustery day. Xin also shows us that finding a quality coat you love is crucial, and it never hurts to top things off with a hat.

A, BB , and CC Written By: Teresa Harris Tinted moisturizers are no longer simply a classic facial moisturizer with a hint of tint. With the introduction of BB creams, and more recently CC creams, finding the right product to deliver a sheer wash of moisturizing colour has gotten complicated. Luckily, I’m here to demystify the realm of tinted beauty creams and balms, and provide a few personal recommendations so that you can say ‘goodbye’ to cakey coverage and ‘hello’ to your natural-but-better skin. BB creams originated in the Asian beauty market, with BB standing for ‘blemish balm’ or ‘blemish base’. Here in North America, the acronym stands for ‘beauty balm’, which sounds more appealing but ultimately describes the same product: a pigmented moisturizer with a balm-like consistency that evens skin-tone and blurs imperfections. Touted as an all-in-one product that replaces serum, moisturizer, foundation, primer, and sunscreen, it’s the superhero face product for girls who can’t be bothered with foundation or multiple steps in their skincare regimen.
The CC in CC cream stands for ‘colour correcting’, and products boasting this name are intended to address skin imperfections like redness and sallowness, rather than simply cover them up. While overall not much different from BB creams, CC creams are likely to have a whipped-like consistency and as a result feel lighter on the skin. If you’re combating dryness, Allure.com suggests Estee Lauder Daywear BB Anti-Oxidant Beauty Benefit Crème with SPF 35. If covering imperfections is your main goal, Clinique Age Defense BB Cream SPF 30 is your best bet: it’s so opaque that it could pass as a sheer foundation. Finally, if you’re trying to not just cover, but correct, skin imperfections like dark spots, reach for Olay’s Total Effects 7 in One CC Tone Correcting Moisturizer, which boasts a combination of ingredients shown to reduce discolouration in as little as six weeks. Bottom line? Because BB and CC creams are so similar in function, deciding which product is best suited to your needs ultimately depends on your goals and the individual product’s formulation.
movie review: Blue Jasmine
Written By: Angelica Ng Occasionally, a movie comes along that you watch for no reason other than the cast or the fashion (see: The Great Gastby). Blue Jasmine was just that kind of movie for me. Blue Jasmine, directed by Woody Allen and starring Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin, was released back in August 23. It follows a high-class socialite, Jasmine French, who finds herself suddenly without the riches she was so used to. She flees to live with her estranged sister, and in the process, finds herself unable to ignore the dark realities of her previously luxurious lifestyle. The plot is not entirely unique, but what this movie lacks in an impactful storyline is made up for in its fantastic acting and costume design.

Blanchett gives a spell bounding performance – one I would not hesitate to say is Oscar-worthy. She expresses perfectly the internal struggle between trying to maintain her prestigious image and facing her unpleasant realities. One moment she is composed and elegant, the other she is a bumbling mess on the verge of madness. For all the moments in between, she skillfully makes almost imperceptible flinches when she finds her poised veneer slowly being hammered at. Sometimes, it is the minutest of actions that make a performance. In addition to a talented actress, Blue Jasmine contains stunningly sophisticated fashion. Jasmine possesses an affinity for Hermès handbags, Roger Vivier flats, Fendi dresses and Louis Vuitton suitcases. In the dire state of her new lifestyle, fashion is the one thing Jasmine desperately clutches on to as a reminder of her past prestige. Even if the movie itself does not hold your attention for 90 minutes, the fashion certainly will.

ast month, our Committee announced the theme for this year’s UWO Charity Ball on February 2, 2014. Titled “The Classics,” the theme makes for an elegant affair, while also incorporating this year’s charitable recipient, Arts for All Kids.
As the chosen theme, “The Classics,” presents a dual nature by definition. It signifies the classical arts: dance, music and visual arts - all matters of core programming that Arts for All Kids strives to provide for underprivileged children in the London community. At the same time, it also pays homage to the glitz and glamour of the roaring twenties and Old Hollywood, a party that Gatsby himself would attend should he ever leave his humble abode in West Egg. Think opulent gold decorations, gorgeous gowns, dapper tuxes, and a night filled with reliving the glamour of a time passed.
