new year’s resolutions I resolve to...

“Put more effort into my everyday wear!”

- Olivia yusuf

“Get my head out of the books more often and spend time with friends. As for my long-standing resolution of never leaving the house in baggy sweatpants: still going strong.” - ANgelica ng “To document more. I’ve purchased a journal and for 2014, I will tack in all my stickers, pictures, quotes, and song lyrics into this little book for my 80 year old self to glimpse at, and for my future 25 year old self to feel better about hopefully realizing I’m not the neurotic mess I am now.” - Keshia Saldanha

“Buy more wine and dance more.” - quinn griffiths

“Think bigger. It’s a simple resolution, but one I think is applicable to all situations I will involve myself in.” - stephanie ling

Meet You on theRed

Carpet

Written By: angelica ng

The New Year usually heralds the beginning of the most prestigious film award ceremonies, among them being the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. In the coming two months, we can expect a steady procession of thank you speeches, a social media whirlwind of what’s been snubbed, and of course, numerous red carpet reports. With the help of Spring/Summer 2014 RTW collections, let’s wager a guess at what we might see on that coveted carpet:

Ball Gowns

Christian Dior

The go-to silhouette for any freshfaced celebrity is the ball gown, and the go-to label for ball gowns is undoubtedly Christian Dior. Raf Simons has revitalized the silhouette in the past few seasons by paring it down to a cleaner, more modern cut. With the hem raised above the ankles, nifty pockets cut into the sides, and the subtle sheen of silver jacquard, this dress is perfect for the young, up-and-coming actress looking to maintain an air of class.

Bold Colour

Albert Ferretti

Sometimes it’s the colour of a dress— not necessarily its design— that turns heads (and camera lenses). Remember Mila Kunis in her lavender reverie at the Oscars 2011, and Angelina Jolie in her emerald perfection at the Golden Globes 2011? No red carpet fête is complete without a burst of colour. Alberta Ferretti oozes optimism in this saturated orange dress with equally bold flowers artistically winding themselves around the torso.

Christian Dior

Versace

Metallic Who could forget when Meryl Streep showed up to the Oscars 2012 in a shimmering gold Lanvin creation—an obvious nod to the iconic Oscars statuette—and proceeded to win Best Actress for her performance in The Iron Lady? Metallics are a great way to stand out amongst the crowd when the photographers’ cameras flash, and can act as a cheeky lucky charm for those looking to hold a golden statuette in their hands for the photocall later on.

Minimalism

Elie Saab

In the past few years, we’ve seen a resurgence of minimalism. Remember the Golden Globes 2011 when Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain and Claire Danes all arrived in simple, single-hued Calvin Klein column dresses? Since then, minimalism has been touted as the way to avoid the peacockery of traditional red carpets. Surprisingly, even Elie Saab—the master of embellished, lacy red carpet confections—has been bitten by the minimalism bug in his S/S’14 collection.

Excess While minimalism rules, nothing beats the taste of sweet excess. Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig of Marchesa are known for taking dreams and turning them into magical dresses. 3-D floral appliques, crystal embellishment, intricate bits of lace…you name it! Even though such grandeur could land a celebrity on the Worst Dressed list (oops!), the capable hands of Marchesa will ensure her style will be wellremembered—statue or no statue.

F&LS Bloggers: Krista of krista camilla About

Krista was born in Toronto 20 years ago and is currently a student studying Arts, Digital Humanities and Public Relations. She has been fortunate to have several internships in the fashion and media industry, and those internships were what sparked the creation of her blog, Krista Camilla. Check her out at kristacamilla.tumblr.com.

Why did you start a blog? During the past four summers I have been thrown head first into the exciting life of the fashion and media industry. This ultimately heightened my eagerness to become a bigger part of these two worlds, and I decided to create my blog.

What can we expect on Krista Camilla? My blog focuses on mixing high-end luxury products with more casual and less expensive products so that the looks are more obtainable. As well, I have included personal fashion and travelling photos for fun.

Where do you find your inspiration? I spend much of my downtime reading other blogs, fashion books, and magazines. My favourite sections of fashion blogs are the ‘Get the Look’ sections because they greatly inspire me.

What blogs do you follow? Man Repeller, The Blonde Salad, Kayture

QUinn of life’s little instructions About

Quinn Griffiths is a Political Science Major who loves pale and pastel home décor, but thinks all clothing looks best in black. You can find her sporting a bright red lip, drinking coffee and living by the advice, “Count your blessings and call your mother.” Check her out at l i fe s l i tt l e i n s t r u ct i o n s . t u m b l r . c o m .

Why did you start a blog? What can we expect on Life’s I started my blog Life’s Little Instructions Little Instructions? after a poem by H. Jackson Brown Jr. It started as a personal blog but as my taste in fashion started to develop, I changed my blogging style to a fashion and modelling blog. I started the blog as a creative outlet to express my love of fashion, and to serve as an extensive collection of clothes to share with women as motivation for putting outfits and looks together. The idea behind my blog as it stands today is that all fashion is art and the more whimsical the art, the better it looks on the canvas.

My blog has a very New York/city girl feel to it. After dabbling in the modelling industry, I’ve come to love Cara Delevingne, Daphne Grovensveld, Joan Smalls and Candice Swanepoel, among other high fashion models. I like any pieces that have structure and I love skater skirts and blackless dresses. If you check out my blog, you will find celebrity street style, runway makeup, backstage pictures from fashion shows and a touch of equestrian class.

Where do you find your inspiration? What I draw inspiration from would be beautiful soft colours from upcoming designer collections and big statement jewellery that make entire outfits come together. I like keeping up with different fashion weeks because I can see what the models are wearing on the street.

What blogs do you follow? Michelle Phan, Fabsugar, Street Peeper, Who What Wear, Elle, Blair Fowler
