A LOOK BACK: FASHION SHOW If stepping through the glass doors of Museum London wasn’t classy enough, walking up the winding stairs to F&LS’s Masquerade Fashion Show definitely was. Greeting me at the entrance were four rows of sleek black chairs, patiently waiting for an audience to bring the runway alive. As coordinators Caitlin Herold and Kirin Sennik introduced the show, and the music started to play, the masquerade officially began. Models came out in alluring black lace masks to chart the progression from day to eveningwear. Daywear consisted of printed or boldly coloured statement pieces, and celebrated the power of a good jacket. Eveningwear featured heavily embellished, shimmering gowns that left the audience mesmerized as the diaphanous skirts brushed past their high heels. Breaking out of their hushed state of awe, the audience applauded Caitlin and Kirin for yet another amazing show. I can only begin to imagine what next year will bring.

A Streetstyle ‘Mecca’

Summer Festival Fashion and Upcoming Festivals in the GTA With warm weather steadily approaching, hoards of people are getting ready for summer festivals. Starting off the summer festival season is the inaugural Coachella, a three-day event dedicated to indie, rock, hip-hop and electronic music, but also doubling as a street style ‘Mecca’, where eclectic taste meets contemporary fashion. From batik print, to feather headdresses, fringe handbags and crop tops, the style-scape at these events has an experimental vibe. A playground to mix prints with textures, neons with muted tones, feminine silhouettes with boyish outerwear…and the list goes on. Here are a few festival trends I have noticed while procrastinating for exams:

NEON ON NEON The neon trend is excellent for summer, emulating the bright sun in style. I particularly love this outfit on Rita Ora at Coachella 2013. The neon graphic tee complete with a one liner, and paired with a baby pink midi skirt is youthful, upbeat, and perhaps even inspired by the new Spring Breakers movie by director Harmony Korine. However, Rita always adds a twist to her ensembles, edging this outfit up with hi-top loafers, retro sunglasses, and a chunky gold watch.

Miranda Kerr and Alessandra Ambrosio at Coachella 2013

BOHO-HIPPIE

This is another take on the bohohippie look that is absolutely fantastic; the flower crown adds the perfect touch!

This next trend is a personal favourite, and these models do an ‘angelic’ job of pulling it off. Starting with textured short-shorts, be them high-waisted and leather like Miranda’s, or eyelet lace like Alessandra’s, textured short-shorts are a summer staple. Paired with a loosely fitted cotton bohemian t-shirt, and accessorized to the max with various bracelets, ankle boots, a wide brimmed hat and shades, this is an easy to imitate and quick go-to look for summer outings. I especially like the fringe elements Alessandra added to her outfit with the vest and the handbag.

THE LAIDBACK LOOK From what used to be a fashion faux pas comes the laidback look. It consists of socks and a dark waistaccentuating printed dress, paired with a high bun. Chloe’s look is effortless, laidback and, as I can imagine, comfy.

Alexa Chung at Coachella 2013

Another take on the same look!

PREPPY TOMBOY The ever-trendy Alexa Chung, known to be a stylish tomboy, is the perfect ambassador for this look. Taking a collared button down blouse and pairing it with denim cutoffs and Converse provides a gendered twist to a traditionally feminine look.

Aside from the various looks detailed above there are many more trends such as hi-lo skirts, bustiers, and bellbottoms. There are so many possible remixes with all of these items, and all of them can be put together to create your own personal take on festival fashion. While style is an overarching theme at these festivals, so is comfort. Besides being trendy, festivalgoers often spend long hours standing or sitting on the grass in between performances, so being comfortable is key. That said, while most of us can’t make it out to Coachella due to obvious reasons like distance and exams, here is a list of some upcoming festivals in the Greater Toronto Area...

MEDIA CITY

NORTH BY NORTH EAST

A film festival dedicating to experimental film. If you enjoyed Spring Breakers, you may find your cinematic niche at this festival. It features work by experimental film from all across Canada in an intimate setting, allowing you to really interact in the atmosphere. Windsor, ON May 21-25

A sister festival to South by South West in the Austin, TX , this festival focuses mainly on music, but it also has a mini film, comedy and digital interactive experience. NXNE is often a platform used for up and coming artists. This is the Coachella equivalent for Canada, except the music genre scope is broader. Toronto, ON June 10-16

LUMINATO

DIGITAL DREAMS

A festival celebrating art and creativity within Toronto, this festival features an array of media from films to performance art. It acts as an art magnet, drawing in the collective artist juices from all over Toronto. Toronto, ON June 14-23

This festival brings together lovers of electronic, house and dub-step music together with internationally renowned DJs. This festival operates in an almost ravelike manner: a club experience on steroids. Toronto, ON June 29-30

FRINGE

SUNFEST CANADA

A unique film festival that does not have a judging panel, and in which its participants are not competing for a prize or title. The Fringe festival consists of theatre performances from a mainly underground stream of actors. It is an exciting live performance experience. Toronto, ON July 3-14

Held in our very own London, Ontario, the SunFest Canada Music Festival promotes cross-cultural diversity between artistic disciplines. It brings together various artistic representations of cultures from around the world. London, ON July 4-7

BOOTS AND HEARTS A music festival with a specific focus on country music, it features big name artists like Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert and Rascal Flatts. This festival provides a camping experience while being exposed to various country styles such as country-pop, bluegrass and country-rock. Bowmanville, ON August 2-4
