FASHION NEWS
BRAD PITT FOR CHANEL In the latest fashion news, Brad Pitt made his endorsement debut as the first male spokesman for the famed women’s fragrance Chanel No. 5. The ad is in black and white, and shows Pitt staring wistfully into the camera, contemplating in a few short lines the journey that is life. The ad was part of a new 10 million dollar campaign that Chanel launched for the iconic fragrance. Sexy or silly? Decide for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGs4CjeJiJQ
MUSIC PICKS BEETLEBUM BLUR Lead singer Damon Albarn once said that “Beetlebum” described a “sleepy” and “sexy” emotion, which is exactly what the song is like. It is a slow and enjoyable listen.
GHOST SKY FERREIRA The title track off of Sky Ferreira’s Ghost EP is haunting, beautiful, and gloomy. Written by Ferreira and producer Jon Brion (Fiona Apple, Kanye West), it sounds similar to Brion’s work with Best Coast. “Ghost” is a refreshing change from Ferreira’s earlier, more upbeat work.
LITTLEST THINGS LILY ALLEN
LIVE OR DIE LANA DEL REY
“Littlest Things” incorporates sweet, melancholy piano tunes and lyrics that reminisce of times with an old lover. It’s evocative, slow, and a departure from Lily’s quirkier songs.
“Live or Die” is one of Lana’s unreleased songs, and carries much of the same vibe as “National Anthem” in Born to Die. It’s catchy, upbeat, and makes numerous references to old, classic films.

THE POWER OF THE SUIT Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter in Suits
The suit is glamourous, classic, and sharp. Dana El-Tawil discusses the power of the suit.
W
hile it may hold true that the majority of narratives in the fashion world pertain to females, it’s important not to forget the men of this world. From high cheekbones to collarbones and cleavage, this is just a sampling of the physical attributes women possess which are deemed “visually appealing” or “aesthetically pleasing”. Now shift to men: cologne and cufflinks ring the bells of the sophisticated, sharp and, well, suited! In the spirit of the festive season, as men reach into the back of their closets to find that old suit they rarely wear, I’m going to tell you why the suit is so much more valuable than that. There is a captivating old-world glamour and class that this menswear staple releases, which to our female dismay, is so often shafted in favour of sweatpants and t-shirts. The sight of a man in a three-piece suit is regularly likened to the transformation of a boy to a gentleman, making corporate deals by day and sipping aged liquor by night. Similar to how Monsieur Louboutin accurately depicts it, heels can lift a woman physically and emotionally; likewise, a man dressed to the nines in a well-tailored suit can make him feel like an invincible, off-duty superhero, à la Clark Kent. Hollywood celebrities, films and television series celebrate and admire men dressed in finely tailored suits. Harvey Specter, a top attorney on the popular television series Suits, is known for his sharp physical appearance which complements his wit and confidence.
He is the epitome of today’s well-suited urban, successful and powerful gentleman. Wearing top suit designers like Tom Ford, Ermenegildo Zegna and Ralph Lauren, as well as flashy accessories like cufflinks, a luxe timepiece, thicker tie knots and polished dress shoes, this man can do no wrong both in court and in appearance, further iterating the power of the suit. For the men out there who can’t spare a few grand on a made-to-measure Armani, taking the trends that these pioneers of fashion present to us on the runways and mimicking them in a more affordable way can still have the same effect. In my attempt to preach about men’s style, how you pull together your appearance is at the core of it all. One should inhale fashion and exhale style; your style is what differentiates you as an individual. Take current trends and cultivate them into a custom-made look that speaks to you. So on this note, I leave you with a bit of inspiration: http://guysinsuits.tumblr.com/ Suit up fellas!

STREET STYLE 101 November saw campus full of stressed-out students trekking to the library in sweatshirts and sweatpants. Yet, as midterms slowed down and came to an end, students began to walk around in stylish fall outfits. On campus, we found Melody dressed fashionably warm on a sunny, cold day.

LET’S TALK FASHION Who or what inspires your style? M: Window shopping always gives me fashion ideas. Where do you like to shop, and what are your favourite fashion shops in London? M: I don’t have any favourite shops in London yet, but my favourite streets to shop on are Queen Street and Bloor Street in Toronto. How would you describe your sense of style? M: My style changes all of the time, and I’m always shuffling my wardrobe. I get rid of clothing and buy new clothing a lot. Do you have fashion advice for students looking to build their personal style? M: No pajamas to class! I hate it when people do that. It’s not hard to throw on leggings and a sweater in the morning. Any winter trends you are looking forward to? M: Accessories, mitts, scarves. I love bundling and layering too.
