HOW TO GET TAX CREDITS FOR IMPROVED HOME SUSTAINABILITY We live in a day and age where recycling, up-cycling, and going green are common. With everything from second-hand clothing stores to electric cars, people are finding inventive ways to save energy, not to mention money. We have been seeing this idea of sustainability creep into our homes more and more throughout the last decade, and now the government is offering tax credits for making the upgrades to a more energy-efficient homestead. Here are five home improvements that will save you energy and give you a break from Uncle Sam in 2016.
PHOTOVOLTAIC ENERGY SYSTEMS
These systems are made up of the familiar solar panels that we’ve been seeing more of over the past 10 years. Simply put, they are battery cells that harness the sun’s energy and transform that energy into electricity for the house. Once professionally installed, these can reduce your home’s annual carbon dioxide output by an average of 35,180 pounds. These systems will earn you a tax credit of 30% of the cost with no upper limit. The only requirement is that this upgrade is made to your primary or secondary home.
WINDOWS
If you swap out your house’s old windows for newer Energy Star approved versions, you could save your household an average of 12 percent on your energy bills. There are a few catches on this credit, though. It must be an existing residence, and labor costs cannot be included in your total. The tax credit is 10% of the window cost with a limit of $200.
INSULATION
This is one of the more affordable options to improve your home’s sustainability. Insulation improves the heating and cooling efficiency of your home, and can be self-installed in about a day (thus saving even more cash). This will credit your tax bill up to $500. Anything that reduces air leaks can fall under this category, including weather stripping, caulk, house wrap, or spray foam designed for air sealing. Sources: energystar.gov, forbes.com, windenergyfoundation.org
RESIDENTIAL WIND TURBINES
If you live on an acre or more, you could have your very own wind turbine that produces emissions-free electricity for your house. The average cost of a residential turbine is around $30,000, with 30% of the system’s cost being credited back for taxes. It could take anywhere from 6 to 30 years to recover the cost of a small wind turbine, depending on factors such as electricity usage of the home, height, and diameter of the turbine, and wind speed in the area.
ROOFS
If your roof needs major repairs or replacement, perhaps you should replace it with an Energy Star approved metal or asphalt roof. These have pigmented coatings or cooling granules that reduce heat retainment. The tax credit is 10% of the cost, not including labor costs. The only catch is that it must be Energy Star certified. Choosing upgrades for your home to improve its sustainability isn’t only good for your wallet. These improvements greatly reduce the overall carbon footprint of your household. The more of the population that gets on board with energy efficiency, the greater we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which affect the global population. Before choosing which improvements to make, consider the cost of the materials, the labor weighed against the energy savings, the reduction of your carbon footprint, and the potential tax credit. Even more improvements for home sustainability and the tax credits associated with them can be found at EnergyStar.gov.
HAPPY SAVINGS!
NURSERY DECORATING
Trends FOR 2016 Whether it’s your first or your fifth, having a new baby is exciting and a cause for preparation. The nursery, where your bundle will sleep and play, is key to creating an atmosphere conducive to sleep and relaxation. You’ll be especially thankful for your nursery amidst the cries and late night snacks. Here are some of the nursery decoration trends to watch for in 2016 that can help make your baby’s new room a portrait of his or her personality!
Pastels Are Back
Statement Cribs
The Wonder of Wood
Making it Modern
The sweet gentle colors of pink or blue are still around. Pastels have returned with a bang, offering a calming effect to any room. But don’t feel closed in by the traditional colors. We see others like periwinkle, lilac, and pale green. These soft colors are modernized by blending with newer patterns and modern decor.
In the end, the nursery and the decorations you choose are what you love. Don’t be afraid to venture out of the trendy box to make the room a relaxing environment for you and your baby. sources: Pinterest.com, projectnursery.com, sheknows.com
It’s no secret that natural wooden decor has made its way into our homes, from carvings for the walls to natural wooden crates made into shelving. Now that wooden look seeps into the nursery. This year, wood panel wall pieces are big, and often splashed with phrases or names. For cribs, reclaimed wood or natural wood tones are on the rise, but they still compete with the traditional white and espresso tones.
Bold With Lighting
Along with cribs as a centerpiece, there is also a trend towards bold statement lighting fixtures. Pendants or chandeliers sparkle from the ceiling, drawing the eye upwards as you glance around the room. Just a quick stroll through Pinterest, and we see large lampshade fixtures, lighting made to look like wood, main lights with dangling mobile pieces (a great way to include your chosen animal or shape), or large modern bulbs.
Cribs are essential to the nursery, and they’ve got something to say! In 2016, we see statement cribs in the baby’s rooms as more than a sleep place, but an art centerpiece. Crib manufacturers are getting bold, playing with the shapes, materials, and colors of the crib. One maker even uses solid, colored acrylic pieces as one side of the crib’s wall.
Even with pastels coming back, they are blended in with the sleek, clean look of modern decor. Instead of frills and florals, we are seeing a resurgence of simple and sharp. Geometric shapes can be incorporated in the wall hangings, how the wall is painted, or into a rug. The sharp lines of a modern look helps to balance the fluff traditionally seen in nurseries.
To the Skies
It is typical in the nursery world to have a shape or animal that people gravitate to that they can splash here and there in the room. According to ProjectNursery.com, 2016 will see many nurseries that are zooming to the skies with pictures of clouds or moons as the focus. Having a specific theme to the nursery offers a fun and creative way to decorate the nursery and incorporate that icon in several different places.
Your Recipe of the Month Fire up the grill tonight for these Spicy Honey BBQ Chicken Kabobs, drizzled with an easy-to-make glaze that’s sure to impress your guests!
Honey Bacon BBQ Chicken Skewers (Adapted from SpicedBlog)
INGREDIENTS For the Glaze: 6 slices bacon, chopped 3/4 cup honey 3 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 Tbsp hot sauce For the Skewers: 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts or tenders 3 Tbsp soy sauce 3 Tbsp olive oil 2 Tbsp honey 2 tsp garlic, minced ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper 1 medium zucchini, sliced into ½” rings 1 yellow squash, sliced into ½” rings 1 medium red onion, sliced into 2” pieces 1 red bell pepper, sliced into 2” pieces • Once chicken is completely thawed, slice into one-inch cubes; set aside. • In a small bowl, whisk together next 6 ingredients. • Lightly toss the cubed chicken in mixture until well-coated. • Cover and marinate in refrigerator for 1 hour. • While chicken is marinating, soak eight 8-inch wooden skewers in water. • Meanwhile, make the Glaze. In a large pan, cook the bacon until it is crisp, then remove to a paper-towel-lined plate and let cool. Crumble the bacon and set aside. • Drain the grease from the pan; add honey, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce. Let bubble over medium heat; add bacon. • Stir and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly thickened, then remove from heat. The glaze will continue to thicken as it cools down. • Preheat grill to medium heat. • In whichever order you prefer, thread the chicken, zucchini, squash, onion and pepper onto the skewers. • Place skewers on grill and brush tops generously with Glaze. Close grill and cook for 5-6 minutes. • Flip skewers and brush tops with remaining Glaze. Cook for 5-6 more minutes, or until chicken is completely cooked through.
Serve and enjoy!

HOUSEPLANTS THAT CAN ACTUALLY
IMPROVE
YOUR HEALTH
Adding a houseplant or two always seems to improve the look of a room. As it turns out, certain houseplants can also improve your health. According to recent studies by NASA, these specific plants can filter out dangerous compounds that are commonly found in most homes – the types of compounds that are often associated with respiratory illnesses, cancer, and other conditions. Since they are enclosed spaces, our homes are vulnerable to gaseous toxins that build up over time. These include: ★
Benzene – caused by paints, detergents, and furniture wax
★
Formaldehyde – caused by disinfectants or preservatives in consumer products
★
Toluene and Xylene – caused by a variety of household and consumer products
★
Ammonia – caused by commonly used aerosols and sprays
Additionally, 10 NASA-approved houseplants are said to be effective in removing air pollutants: ✿
English Ivy – a trailing ivy plant that requires partial shade and light weekly watering
✿
Florist’s chrysanthemum – A lovely floral that needs direct light and frequent change of water
✿
Peace Lily – Produces small, white flowers. Needs weekly watering. But consider carefully before buying, because this plant can be poisonous to house pets
✿
Variegated Snake Plant – Has tall, broad, green and white leaves. Requires partial shade and weekly watering
✿
Red-edged Dracaena – Almost cactus-like in appearance, this plant needs direct sunlight and weekly watering
✿
Cornstalk Dracaena – Produces cornstalk-type leaves. Wants partial shade and weekly watering
✿
Broadleaf Lady Palm – Fern-like plant that likes partial shade and weekly watering
✿
Flamingo Lily – Also known as anthurium, this plant produces shiny red flowers and requires partial shade and weekly watering
✿
Devil’s Ivy – produces luxurious ivy leaves, likes partial shade, and needs only monthly watering
✿
Lilyturf – Produces purple flowers. Requires partial shade and weekly watering.
Remember to water lightly in most cases, as over-watering can cause root rot and kill the plant. Source: RISMedia

STEPS TO PREPARE FOR A REMODEL 1. Research your project. Taking time to research projects will provide a good sense of what is involved such as price, scope of work, return on investment and new product/material options. Also, research property values in your neighborhood to make sure your project is in line with other homes in the area. 2. Plan project around the long-term. How long do you plan to stay in your home? How might your family structure change over time? Life can change quickly—these questions should be answered early on to ensure your project will fit your lifestyle long after it’s complete. 3. Set your budget. Deciding on a realistic budget and arranging finances to support your project are essential. This number needs to include everything—the project, products, contingencies, etc. Don’t be afraid to share this with your remodeler; professionals are respectful of a client’s budget and will create a plan around it, not over it. 4. Use advanced search for professionals. The online world makes it easy to gather information about strangers. Ask friends, family and neighbors for referrals and then spend time researching that person online. Professional remodelers take their reputation seriously and hold credentials beyond licensing, such as certifications, memberships in trade associations and additional training. Look for examples of press coverage or involvement in industry presentations or events. Check online reviews and social media to see how they interact with past clients and peers. 5. Ask the right questions. Time and cost are important, but getting the right information requires the right questions. Ask your professional remodeler about his educational background, training, specialties or past issues with clients. Ask about how the remodeling process will work.
The Remodeling Industry (NARI) advises homeowners of the 10 most important steps to take before the remodeling project starts. What can a homeowner do to prepare for a remodel? NARI provides a top 10 list of steps homeowners should take before breaking ground on their next remodel.
6. Verify your remodeler. Don’t take their word for it. Check the information given to you such as references, license numbers, insurance information and certifications by calling providers to verify. Request a visit to an active client’s job site. Make it known that you are checking on him—a true professional considers that as a positive sign to working with a homeowner. 7. Review contracts word-by-word. A remodeling contract protects you and your remodeler. Homeowners should review this carefully. Professional remodelers have done this before, and know what should go in a contract. Homeowners are not as familiar with remodeling and should ask about terms if they don’t understand. Pay attention to details about change orders, payment, additional fees, timeline and responsibilities. If it’s not in the contract, it doesn’t exist. 8. Keep design in mind. Your design guides the entire project. Think about what you dislike about your current space and the intended use of the new space. Make sure you can articulate specifically what you like about that design when talking to your designer. 9. Make your selections. Deciding on products and materials is a larger process than most imagine. With so many options to choose from, product selections are one of the primary reasons for project timelines to get extended. Base decisions on quality, function, price, style and availability. Include selections in the contract to lock down pricing and keep your budget intact. 10. Create a communication plan. Your remodeler should lay out a communication plan at the beginning of the project. If not, ask them to do so. This plan should clarify roles of everyone involved, communication methods, availability, and frequency of communication that is expected.
As an industry that struggles with a persistent negative perception of remodeling contractors, these tips serve both the industry and consumers in elevating real professionals from the pack. Source: RISMedia

STEPS FOR MOVING INTO A NEW KITCHEN
Have you heard of the “kitchen confusion dance?” It’s where you dance around the kitchen opening and closing cabinet doors in search of utensils, plates and bowls or a small appliance. Moving into a kitchen, whether in a new-to-you home or after remodeling, is full of decisions. After assisting countless clients as a professional organizer and seven moves of my own, I’ve got more tricks up my sleeve than a magician. As you pull a jumble of kitchen items from boxes, you really do have a goal. It isn’t just to get everything stashed out of sight in your new cabinets, but to create a smooth, working kitchen. You’ll want to maximize all of the storage provided by your cabinets and be very selective about what you choose to leave out on your counters so that you have plenty of room for food preparation. Consider these tips, then use some sticky notes to temporarily label your kitchen cabinets. It will make unpacking much easier if you take a moment to plan before diving in.
3 1
Start at the Dishwasher
There is no task you will do more often than unload your dishwasher. Make it as easy as possible by locating the most common items as close as you can to the dishwasher. Drinking glasses: Choose the cabinet closest to the dishwasher. You can carry a stack of plates across the kitchen, but you can only carry a few glasses at a time. Put them in the easiest-to-reach location. Silverware: Choose the drawer closest to the dishwasher that is large enough for your collection. Everyday dishes: Choose the nextclosest cabinet for plates and bowls. Coffee mugs: There are two great options depending on your cabinet locations: either near the dishwasher, or decide upon your coffee maker location and place the mugs close to that. Children’s dishes: If you have sippy cups and plastic ware for your young ones, choose a shelf or drawer in a lower cabinet so the children can easily reach their own cups, plates and bowls.
2
Warm Up to the Stove
Gather everything you use for the stove and oven and locate it nearby. An under-the-oven drawer is great for broiler and baking pans, saucepans and lids or skillets. Pots, Pans and Skillets: Locate in a deep drawer or cabinet convenient to the stove. Casseroles and Baking Pans: Both upper and lower cabinets or deep drawers can work for these. Cooking Utensils: Collect all the spatulas, scrapers and spoons you use at the stovetop and locate them nearby in an attractive crock or close-by drawer. Pot holders: Add a couple of removable stick-on hooks inside a door close to the stove and oven for pot holders.
Source: Home Depot
EXPLORE NEAR THE SINK
Along with the dishes, you’ll be doing a lot of prep work at the sink. Remember that if you have an island in your kitchen, the cabinets in the island directly opposite of the sink are also convenient. Dish washing: Claim half of the cabinet space under the sink for dish and kitchen cleaning products. If you have a young family, make sure to take appropriate safety precautions. Chef knives: Place your knives near the sink, either in a block or use a nearby drawer. Cutting boards: Locate cutting boards under the sink or in a lower cabinet very close to the sink. Colanders and Strainers: You’ll be grabbing colanders or strainers for rinsing berries or other produce. Choose a location close to your cutting boards and knives. Towels: Wet hands at the sink means you’ll grab for a towel. Choose a near-by drawer or even a basket under the sink.
4
Allocate the Rest
Now that you’ve assigned storage to the basics, you can allocate your cabinet space to the remaining items. There will always be odds and ends, such as plastic leftover dishes, so think in categories and put likeitems together. Food Storage: If you don’t have a dedicated pantry, choose several kitchen cabinets located next to each other and turn those into your pantry. You don’t want food spread all over the kitchen. Baking: Creating a baking center is a great way to organize all the things used for baking. Place cake pans, muffin tins and cookie decorating tools into one area. Small Appliances: If you use it daily or several times per week, leave it out. Otherwise, store it away. Lower roll-out shelves are perfect for these. Entertaining: Items for entertaining, such as chip and dip sets and platters, are perfect for storing in out-of-the-way cabinets over the fridge or stove.
ULTRA MODERN FIXTURES FOR A FUTURISTIC BATHROOM As a homeowner, one of the most worthwhile investments you can make is a bathroom upgrade. Bathroom renovations enhance not only real estate value, but also your overall enjoyment of the space, and appointments these days are light years ahead of the materials used in other types of remodels. If you’re considering an upgrade, go for one (or all!) of these ultra modern, futuristic fixtures: SPACE-AGE SHOWERS From showers with dual spray and steam functionality to smart showers that “customize the clean,” a variety of high-tech, luxury upgrades are transforming the simple shower into a spa-like experience. Smart showers, which can be programmed based on temperature and pressure, can also be controlled remotely, giving you the ability to start the water flow and set the temperature before stepping in. Shower technology has also expanded to include waterproof sound systems that stream your favorite music through a shower head speaker. MIND-BLOWING MIRRORS If you’re a bathroom multitasker, intelligent mirrors keep step with the busy pace of your lifestyle. Lowend varieties, such as an anti-fog mirror, use heat or special coatings to ensure the surface remains free of condensation, even after showering. On the higher end are digital mirrors that incorporate a touchscreen display, WiFi, TV and Internet functionality. FAR-OUT FAUCETS Touch-free faucets have been around for some time, but modern digital electronic faucets do far more than turn on sans touch. Electronic faucets use infrared technology to turn off when a user’s hand moves away, and allow users to program the temperature of the water and the duration of the flow. Some faucets even feature software embedded in touchscreen technology that helps monitor your water usage! Source: RISMedia
