EDITOR'S LETTER One handcrafted wooden fly-fishing net leans up against the bookshelf. It sits pretty next to a glitzy gold picture frame, which displays me and my girlfriends sipping margaritas. From the mountain bike in our entryway to the pink throw pillows on the bed, these little juxtapositions are everywhere. Welcome to our home. Last fall, my long-time boyfriend and I moved in together. Until then I never had to sacrifice my sacred girly possessions, and he never imagined that his man toys wouldn’t be allowed in the bedroom. In this way, we brought in the new year testing the boundaries of the word “compromise,” and, slowly but surely, our home has become exactly that: ours. It’s a space adorned with all the unique things that make us… well, us. Much in the way that we debate the merits of the texture and color of our new shower curtain, I imagine that you and yours will do the same about everything from the hues of the tablecloths to the bridesmaid and groomsman pairs that walk down the aisle. After all, your wedding day should be the perfect blend of the colors, tastes, tunes and guests that make you tick as a couple.
Can we talk about what I'm wearing? I thoroughly enjoyed working with Myra Callan and her sister Amy Stewart for this issue's Designer Spotlight (page 37). I'm currently obsessing over this gorgeous headband from Twigs & Honey. It's a sparkly and fancy way to dress up my daily denim garb. And Amy's necklaces are just the right amount of delicate (and gold) to accentuate pretty much anything in my wardrobe. My wishlist is endless with these two truly talented sisters!
In this issue of Flutter, we're excited to share advice, tips and trends for the 2014 wedding and party season from some top coordinators and designers. We're giving you the tools to host at a moment’s notice, recipes that are sure to impress any palate and breathtaking inspiration from recent brides and tastemakers.

Whitney and Chris Private Residence Montecito, California
As a little girl, we all dreamed of our secret garden=i
That beautiful oasis tucked behind those locked iron gates. We only needed that one special key to open those doors to all the beauty that was kept hidden. Whitney and Chris opened their doors to share in the celebration of their love with family and friends, and Whitney’s secret garden was as grand as you could imagine. Following a ceremony at the historic All Saints-by-the-Sea Church, the reception took place at Whitney’s family’s home in Montecito. Childhood memories and tradition infused with the classic elegance of Santa Barbara inspired much of the romantic French provincial decor.
whitney chose a color palette inspired by the english abraham darby rose — full of rich peaches and creams mixed with accents of fresh foliage.
Backyard Benefits
f i v e r e a s o n s to host a w e d d ing at home
1. existing garden urns, fountains, arches and shrubbery can double up as table decor Patio furniture can easily intertwine with rentals for seating and sweet vignettes. 2. make memories that will last a lifetime Did you ever think of celebrating your anniversary in the same spot you shared your first dance? You'll have the luxury of reliving those special moments for years to come. 3. financial and creative freedom Hosting at home offers the flexibility to choose just how to spend your budget without venue limitations or restrictions. 4. everything is within your reach If you need a bobby pin, a hairbrush or just a spot to sneak away with your groom for a quiet moment, it’s all there for you in your home. 5. a home is filled with love We can’t think of a better place to celebrate the beginning of your forever.

Did you know that the aromatic herb signifies remembrance, love, loyalty and fidelity?

An Enchanted Elopement
If you've ever been to the Pacific Northwest, then you know there's something enchanting about it. Lush greenery, scenic landscapes and an abundance of artful culture surround the region. It's truly picturesque and the perfect place for the wild at heart.
plush and cozy, bridal veil lakes couldn't be a more fitting location for event designer Joy de Vivre to set the stage for this elopement. At first glance, it almost seems like a fairytale. Imagine... a young couple running off into the woods, dancing delightfully through groves of trees in celebration of their courtship. Are you swooning yet? Pack a picnic, light some candles and row off into the sunset for the most romantic of endings to this tale.

designer spotlight
What inspires you and continues to inspire you? I am inspired by film, fashion, nature and the intangible, beautiful things in the world. What intangible “things”? The way a bird’s wings move during flight, the glisten on melting dew and the sweet and floral fragrance when walking between ripe blackberry shrubs. Do you yourself hand-make the dresses and accessories featured on your site? For the first couple years, I made everything myself (partly due to cost and partly due to control issues), but as the company grew, I just could not create fast enough to keep with the demand. I’ve added 3 ladies to our in-studio production team and I still make some styles. All our gowns and attire are handmade locally by a wonderful women-owned and operated garment factory in Portland, Oregon. Your designs are made predominantly of lace and silk. What about these materials do you love? There is a definite romance and mystery with lace. They are all so different. Their patterns almost tell a story. For silks, it is about movement and give. I love the way it feels. From weightless, sheer silks to more structured silk organza, I love it all!

Portland-based designer Myra Callan of Twigs & Honey joins us for a Q&A on her whimsical bridal fashions and accessories. From day to night and every day to your wedding
day, we've fallen in love with Myra's one-of-a-kind, timeless and versatile designs — and we think you will too!
What is Twigs & Honey best known for? Twigs & Honey is best known for innovative designs that blend together elements inspired from the natural world, vintage fashion, and gorgeous base materials.
What's your favorite Twigs & Honey dress? I love the Meadowlark Gown because of its feminine lace-covered buttons along the center back, its eyelash-lace finished sleeves and its gauzy and light-as-air silk skirt. It’s just so dreamy and flattering when it’s worn. What's your favorite Twigs & Honey hair piece / accessory? This is constantly changing, but my current favorite accessory is our Baby’s Breath Crystal Hair Vine, style #336. It is enchanting, ridiculously sparkly, ethereal and so much fun to wear. What type of bride do you cater to? Our designs tend to cater to brides that are carefree, whimsical and dare I say, a little quirky. Our brides are sweet and stylish and appreciate the little things. They are unique and don’t want a cookie-cutter wedding. Brides-to-be and true romantics at heart can find these fanciful pieces everywhere from California to Connecticut. Visit www.twigsandhoney.com for more inspiration. A lot of your pieces are very soft, delicate and simple. Do you find that these pair well with Myra's intricate designs? Yes, definitely. I love that my pieces are dainty enough to add a little pretty something without overpowering anything about the bride. Just a little extra sparkle. What's your favorite Junghwa piece? My top two all-time favorites are my brass spike necklace and my tiny initial tags necklace. The spike necklace is for when I want to add a little edge to my outfit and the tiny tags necklace is perfect for everyday wear.
a
m
r y s t e wa
t
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree! Myra's sister Amy Stewart (of Junghwa) designs jewelry that pairs perfectly with Twigs & Honey attire. Not to mention it makes
a great gift for your bridesmaids! Inspired by simple shapes and clean lines, Junghwa jewels are a staple in our closet.
What jewelry trends are you projecting for the 2014 wedding season? I think with jewelry, brides are going to keep it simple. I've been seeing a lot of brides leaning towards pieces they can wear every day even after the wedding. And, anything gold. Gold has definitely ruled over silver this last year and I think it will continue to dominate over the next year.
Amy just introduced these "Mr. & Mrs." Tag Necklaces into her Junghwa collection and we are currently obsessing over them! Engagement gift idea, anyone? Find them and more on www. junghwabyamystewart.com.

ten tips
for achieving your best health for your wedding day 1. go with the flow.
Drinking water is essential. It is needed to maintain a normal metabolism and that healthy skin glow. If you're consuming alcoholic or caffeinated beverages, be sure to balance each out with an 8oz. glass of water.
2. chocolate is good for you!
Integrative Medicine Spa NEST Integrative Medicine Spa is a new concept in health and medicine. We strive to achieve the perfect balance between healing and nurturing with services that span the spectrum from Western medicine to more preventative, anti-aging treatments. NEST is a place where you may come to have your annual physical, rejuvenate your skin, strengthen your immune system, balance your hormones, optimize weight, detoxify your system, increase energy and prevent chronic disease.
Dark chocolate isn’t just for satisfying those sweet cravings! Flavonoids (the antioxidants found in chocolate), calcium, magnesium, iron and vitamins C, D, A and E help the body repair cells, moisturize dry skin and promote healthy hair growth. Pomegranates, berries and kale are also good choices to get your daily dose of antioxidants.
3. work it out.
Not harder, smarter. Moderate exercise or interval training (short bursts of higher intensity) are better for achieving and maintaining optimal heart health as well as weight. It can also help boost your mood and your beauty sleep!
4. do eat often.
Skipping meals is the opposite of what you should do to maintain good health. Small meals with protein every three to four hours allow your energy to stabilize, increase metabolism and keep your mood on an even keel.
5. it's more than just beauty sleep.
Studies show that over eight hours of consistent sleep can increase memory, improve heart function, decrease weight, lower stress and possibly even lengthen your life.
6. have more sex.
Regular sexual activity of approximately four times per week can increase your heart health, improve immunity, decrease stress and improve sleep.
7. b energetic.
B vitamins create energy in your cells and are an essential part of keeping up your stamina. They can be found in lean, organic meats, whole grains and leafy green vegetables.
8. beauty is skin deep.
Your skin absorbs everything! Give it organic, natural products to eat for a healthier look and feel, maintaining that young vibrancy throughout your life. Visit www.ewg.org/skindeep to see a rating on your skin products.
9. detox, darling.
We all eat or drink more than we should every once in a while, so a cleanse two to four times per year can help all the body’s systems work more efficiently. This in return translates to an increase in energy, maintenance of optimal weight and better hormonal balance.
10. now and forever.
Schedule annual physician checkups. Prevention of fatigue, weight gain, sleeplessness, hormonal imbalances and mood disturbances is the easiest way to keep yourself healthy and happy for now and forever.
Dr. Kristi Wrightson and Dr. Mindy Beck, along with our staff of professionals are committed to you in achieving your most optimal health. We have many specialized programs that allow you to obtain your balance of wellness. Hire a planner! You want your mom and your bestie there with you sipping champagne, not finishing DIY floral arrangements. Remember to breathe and take it all in! The day goes by so fast, and you really want to be conscious of everything happening. Oh, and bring a second pair of shoes for the end of the night! Especially if you are wearing those Valentinos!

I'm loving Casa de Perrin! It is so much fun working with them to create a table top that can be so delicately detailed. From vintage champagne coupes to colored glass goblet to antique chargers that are hand painted in Italy, not only is their inventory so much fun, but they are a dream to work with. www.casadeperrin.com
culture inspires me—
Being Greek Orthodox, I gravitate and love European influences -– romantic outdoor settings with beautiful light, old stone buildings, beautiful churches, family, food and the incredible meaning in a wedding ceremony. One of the most beautiful moments incorporated into the Greek Orthodox ceremony is "The Crowning." There is a portion of the ceremony where the bride and groom are crowned (and the crowns are connected). The crowns are signs of glory and honor worn during the sacrement. The bride and groom are crowned as king and queen of their own kingdom: their home, which they will rule with wisdom, love and integrity.

SECRET CRUSH I adore the work of Montecito calligrapher Janice Blair. Every single piece of collateral that she creates for us is stunning! www.janiceblair.com
We will see stunning tablescapes, combining floral with seasonal fruits like old master Dutch and Flemish stilllife paintings set on long tables dressed in elegant linens, with masses of candles and bountiful, beautifully presented meals set atop gleaming silver trays. We will see a style that is decidedly more old-world European.

dresses, long cathedral veils, capes, runners, linens, draping, crocheted lace… you will see versions of it everywhere and I couldn’t be more thrilled as I am a lace-lover! I love pairing it with contrasting designs and textures like wood, velvet, soft natural linen and heavy tweeds or faux furs.

Here Comes the Bride Jaime Kostechko

MODERN / INDIE BRIDES Bright, bold geometric shapes and patterns will be trending. Think color blocking, clean lines in dresses and geo elements in everything from stationery to cakes, to backdrops and décor. For brides that want to soften the look and make it more romantic, I would recommend adding some watercolor to the palette. For a more glammed-up, sophisticated approach, I would add in touches of mixed metals! THE RUSTIC BRIDE I predict a move toward more of a Boho Chic vibe. In other words, more of a refined, foresty, woodland aesthetic. Think floral crowns, ferns, garlands and natural fibers and elements. This trend will definitely center around the dress, taking it to the next level with see-through lace accents, gauzy layers, beading and flowing silhouettes. I am currently swooning over BHLDN’s Lita Gown with its silky layers and lacey coverlet! FOR THE GLAM BRIDE: GATSBY-STYLE wedding trend is only gaining more momentum. Think dramatic gowns, sequined linens, art deco, letterpress invitations and jazz bands. And who doesn’t love a groom in a slim-fitting suit and a bow tie?! To really drive it home, make an entrance in a vintage car, swap out the veil for a glitzy headband and make sure there is plenty of champagne!

ADVICE
If you feel yourself getting stressed, lean on your wedding planner, and make sure to stock up on champagne and chocolate!
I think 2014 weddings will see less dessert bars and a resurgence of the wedding cake.
LINEN
I love the La Tavola Essex Black napkin as an accent piece… There is something so sophisticated about the stripes and the texture of the linen that allows it to be dressed up or down. Pair with La Tavola's New York Brass linen and you're golden!

KAMI & MATT Santa Barbara Historical Museum Santa Barbara, California Photography by Patrick Moyer
Santa Barbara has stolen our hearts and it's captured those of others as well. Enter Kami and Matt - both UC Santa Barbara grads who fell in love amongst the famed American Riviera picnicking at the Mission Rose Gardens, swimming beach-side, hiking in the mountains and BBQ’ing late into the evenings with friends. We love that it became the place where they'd eventually tie the knot!
The Dress Kami stole the spotlight in her glamorous Jenny Packham gown. A mix between vintage and modern, the beautiful beaded embellishments added just the right amount of sparkle and shine!

Quintessentially Santa Barbara
Our main inspiration for the day was trying to stay as true to the idea that this day should be a true reflection of us as a couple. Our venue, the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, was the perfect setting, as it felt quintessentially Santa Barbara with its sun-drenched olive trees, agaves, vines and terracotta. The addition of some strung bistro lights, ceramic lanterns, candles and lots of gorgeous flowers with indigenous greens like olive sprigs and silver dollar eucalyptus completed the look.

A World of Romance Lindsay and Damien
Dos Pueblos Ranch Goleta, California
Photography by Braedon Flynn
the ceremony the bride wanted a traditional catholic ceremony with full mass – and what better church than the famous santa barbara mission?
the dress
My dress was designed by Vera Wang. The textures of the skirt in tulle and organza and the structured bodice provided the perfect contrast I was looking for to match our rustic-elegant theme. It was a classic gown with just enough flair not to be forgotten! - lindsay
a couple whose two favorite things were food and travel,
Lindsay and Damien had their hearts set on a rustic wedding followed by a oncein-a-lifetime honeymoon traveling around the world for 8 months. This inspired the vintage “old-world traveler theme you're about to see. With its rustic, 100-year-old barn and gorgeous, private beach, Dos Pueblos Ranch in Goleta, California, instantly came to mind as the perfect location for the reception.
reception
Upon arrival, guests were greeted by refreshments. They then boarded vintage trolleys for a tour of the working ranch, which finally dropped them off for cocktail hour at a spectacular private beach fitted with an Out of Africa theme, complete with a 1920s jazz band and a large canvas tent. Lawn games, oysters from the raw bar and custom drinks like a Moscow Margarita, Thunderer and Californication helped set the mood for an amazing night.
the second we stepped foot onto dos pueblos ranch
we fell absolutely in love with it. It offers everything we were looking for and more – particularly the ability to create our perfect wedding without the constraints of hotel catering and decor. We basically had a blank slate to create our dream day from scratch. -lindsay
the decor
The entrance to the barn was embellished with vintage luggage, which held gorgeous compasses that had been hand-burned and tea-dyed.
global table numbers
Damien and I planned an 8-month honeymoon around the world. Each globe represented a country that Damien and I would be visiting on our travels. We had 19 tables representing 19 countries out of 23! - Lindsay
the reception For dinner, guests proceeded to the barn, where they were greeted by an 8-piece band. The reception was filled with many wonderful details and memories, including a surprise appearance from a Motown tribute band, a vintage Airstream dessert trailer, and a fire pit to keep guests toasty and warm while they nibbled on treats from the s'mores station nearby. The couple are huge foodies, so they picked one of the bride’s favorite restaurants, Lucques, to cater their wedding. For favors, the couple gave their guests signed copies of chef Suzanne Goin’s cookbook, Sunday Suppers at Lucques.
the band kept guests on their feet, and a surprise confetti drop topped it all off!

What You'll Need - Matte board (we used 5x7 pieces) - Silver or gold foil - Leaves / doilies / lace / other flat textured items - Numbers, printed and cut out - Elmer's Glue - India ink (we chose black) - Paintbrush - Scissors - Cardboard pieces - Wiping cloth/rag - X-Acto Knife
Step 1: Glue textured objects of choice to your matte board. Step 2: Once your design is in place, cover the board with foil, securing with glue. Note: for clean edges, cut off the corners.

Step 3: Using a clean cloth, rub the surface of the front of the board to reveal the texture underneath. Step 4: Next, take your paintbrush and paint over the entire board with the India ink. Let it dry. Step 5: Once dry (about a half hour) take your wiping cloth and rub the paint off of the matte board to reveal the texture underneath. You can rub as little or as much as you like off. The ink stays in the crevices and corners to create an antiqued look.

so you are engaged ... We couldn't be happier for you! So, now what? Photography by Clary Pfeiffer
{Joslin and Nick}
A few months back, we met Joslin and Nick. They were newly engaged and overflowing with excitement, so we just had to know their story. Here's a sweet proposal that will make you swoon. "We had just come back from a weekend celebrating our one year anniversary in Santa Barbara. Although we knew we were meant for each other pretty early on, I was still utterly surprised when he got down on one knee that Wednesday evening. I walked into my house after a long day of work to find it covered in candlelight with a pathway made of yellow rose petals (my favorite) leading to a very dapper Nick, who was dressed in a suit and tie while our song (Adorn by Miguel) was playing in the background. Since dating Nick, he has always been very romantic, so I still was unaware that I was walking into my engagement until he took my hand, and I felt him shaking. It was then that he dropped down to one knee and asked me to spend the rest of his life with him. I don’t even remember saying yes - it was so surreal and perfect. It’s a day I will forever cherish and one day tell our children." - Joslin Here is a starting point and checklist to get you going on the planning of your special day. Not everyone wants to take 8 or more months to plan their wedding, so please use this as a guide to get you started regardless of the time that you have prior to your wedding. (Bridal timeline courtesy of Alexandra Kolendrianos)

m o n t h s
BUDGET & ORGANIZATION - The first thing that you want to do is put together your budget. This will dictate a number of things, such as how many people you are able to include and what type of venue to consider. I would suggest creating a budget template on your computer so that you can continue to update and maintain it. As you start your process, put together a wedding binder to facilitate your organization. PUT TOGETHER YOUR GUEST LIST - Sit down with both of your families and make your list early on. CHOOSE YOUR VENUE & DECIDE ON YOUR WEDDING DATE - Choose a location that you both feel is a reflection of the two of you. PURCHASE YOUR WEDDING DRESS Once you finalize and confirm your venue, begin looking for your wedding dress. Your venue will give you inspiration for the “look” of your dress.
106
DECIDE ON BRIDAL PARTY ATTIRE HIRE YOUR VIDEOGRAPHER HIRE YOUR BAND OR ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE DAY (ceremony, cocktail & reception music) HIRE YOUR OFFICIANT - I like to find the right officiant for my clients at the beginning of the process. The reason that you are pulling together this special day is to have your closest family and friends watch you get married, so try not to leave this until the last minute. Plan ahead and find the right person to marry you (if you don't already have a special relationship with someone). SEND OUT YOUR SAVE THE DATES - Save the Dates should be sent out 6-8 months prior to your wedding. Feel free to send them out earlier if you are planning a destination wedding. And, be sure to have your registry complete prior to sending out your Save the Dates. Be sure to update your registry closer to the wedding as well.
6
m o n t h s
HIRE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER - Choose a photographer whose work you have seen. Be sure it moved you. CHOOSE YOUR FLORIST - Sit down with your floral designer and begin to concept the look and feel of your wedding. Most florists like to get a sense of the entire picture and then begin brainstorming and creating.
PURCHASE GROOM'S ATTIRE DESIGN AND FINALIZE ALL TEXT FOR YOUR INVITATIONS PLAN YOUR HONEYMOON DESIGN AND HIRE ALL VENDORS THAT MAKE UP YOUR DECOR FOR THE DAY FOOD AND BEVERAGE TASTING WITH YOUR CATERER OR VENUE - You will finalize all details that pertain to food, beverage and service at this time. Decide if you want to do a champagne toast at guests’ entry into your reception, if you want to do a specialty drink during cocktail hour and also outline the reception flow at this time (how much time is needed to serve each course, when speeches will happen, etc.).
4 6 m o n t h s
SCHEDULE A HAIR AND MAKEUP CONSULTATION - And then hire your specialists (assuming that you love the look and feel from the trial). Discuss all details of when you will need to be ready and how many girls will be getting their hair and makeup done.
SEND OUT YOUR INVITATIONS Etiquette says to send out your invitations 6-8 weeks prior to your wedding. However, so many people are planning destination weddings and want to give their family and friends enough time to make plans while at the same time want to know what their final count might be. So feel free to send out your invitations 8 weeks prior to the wedding (with your rsvp's due 4 weeks prior).
DECIDE & FINALIZE SPECIFIC MUSIC FOR YOUR WEDDING Song to be playing for your processional, bridal processional and recessional. And what songs will be played for your first dance, father/daughter dance and mom/ groom dance.
PURCHASE THE RINGS FINALIZE YOUR CAKE DESIGN I always think it is nice if your cake design is a complement to your overall decor or theme of your wedding.
2 3 m o n t h s
BOOK ANY TRANSPORTATION NEEDED & RECONFIRM YOUR HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS PUT TOGETHER A PHOTO LIST FOR YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER This is helpful for your photographer to know what group shots are a “must.”
PUT TOGETHER YOUR SEATING CHART PURCHASE YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE PUT TOGETHER WEDDING DAY TIMELINE - Be sure to send this out to all of your vendors along with vendor specifics (address of venue, attire specifics, etc.) as well as any layouts.
RECONFIRM ALL CONTRACTUAL TIMES WITH YOUR VENDORS ENJOY THE TWO WEEKS LEADING UP TO YOUR WEDDING All should be wrapped up two weeks prior so that you can relax, enjoy a spa treatment and begin to soak in the days leading up to your wedding.

Baby, it's cold outside, and we love it! everything from the first frost, to the fresh chill in the air, to the fact that we get to bundle up in our favorite cozy threads - there's just something magical about it. Believe it or not, it does get cold here in Santa Barbara, but it's a rare occasion when we see snowfall. Instead we find ourselves dreaming of snow-covered winter wonderlands filled with flurries, snow angels and glistening icicles. And so naturally, that's what inspired this sweet frosty treat. So gather your friends and go cozy up fireside with these toasty coconut and honey pops.
Toasted Coconut & Honey Popsicles yields 10 popsicles. Adjust per popsicle molds.
Ingredients: - 4 tbsp shredded coconut - 5 tbsp fresh local honey - 30 ounces full fat coconut milk - Popsicle molds - Popsicle sticks Instructions: Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Spread shredded coconut evenly on a baking sheet. Place in oven for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. The coconut toasts quickly, especially if it's sweetened. When lightly browned, remove from oven and place aside. Note: Regular, un-toasted shredded coconut works fine too. In a large bowl, mix shredded coconut, honey and coconut milk. Stir until honey is fully blended in. Pour mixture into popsicle molds and freeze. The coconut pieces will naturally sink to the bottom. About 45 minutes into the freezing process, stir the slightly slushy pops to even out the coconut.
Enjoy!

sThe Grand Exitr
events
jaclyn + pete After getting engaged and having spent many weekend getaways in wine country, Jaclyn & Pete knew the Napa Valley would be the perfect backdrop for their wedding. Jaclyn's father is a vintage car aficionado, so incorporating that fun element into their day was important to her! Just after the ceremony, the bride + groom jetted off in the vintage Cadillac, adorned with a beautiful garland created by Lovely Little Details. The sun having just set behind the hills, the olive trees still aglow from the residual light, it was the quintessential Napa Valley exit. Were you a part of a great grand exit? We'd love to see it!
