A letter from our Editor I grew up on the east coast - New Jersey to be exact. Every year, come October, the air became crisp, the trees turned the most stunning colors of red and golden yellow, and New Jersey - much like the rest of the northeastern region - celebrated the fact that the essence and unique textures of Fall had arrived. Now, don't get me wrong, Santa Barbara is exceptionally beautiful in its own right, but I know the majority of our coastal cohabitants yearn for that crisp and colorful change of season I speak about. With Fall comes a sense of warmth, a rainbow of golden hues, an abundance of seasonal flavor and a myriad of gatherings (hello holidays!). Best of all - no matter where we are - we find the entrance of Autumn inspires us to try new things. Be it your wedding, dinner party, holiday celebration or social gathering of sorts, throughout this issue you we encourage you to enhance your event with tactile textures: think furs, exotic skins, and mix-and-match fabrics like tweed and silk. Bring new flavors to the table with seasonal recipes, add rustic accents to a simple look and journey to far away places with the use of key design elements. Go ahead, be inspired by all that the season has to offer. Be bold in your choices and shine bright. Happy holidays friends!

tools:
To make a floral headdress you will need:
-straight wire -green floral wire -green floral tape -scissors or floral shears -hot glue gun -ribbon -1 bunch red dahlias -1 bunch orange/yellow ranunculus -1 bunch dusty miller
To begin, cut the straight wire to about 9.5" long. This will serve as the base for the headdress. Use two pieces of ribbon and hot glue to each side of the straight wire so you can tie the garland around your head. Make a few clusters of flowers mixed with dusty miller and wrap the stems in floral tape. Wire the clusters of flowers to the straight wire beginning at one end and keep going until the straight wire is covered in flowers. Place on your head, tie the ribbon and secure with additional bobby pins. Enjoy! 25

SAM
and TODD
JULY 27, 2013
26
When did you and Todd meet? SAM: Todd and I met 11 years ago at a beach bonfire. We immediately starting chatting and the rest was history. When did you realize Todd was the one for you? SAM: We hung out every single day in the summer when we met and I knew early on that he was the one. How did he pop the question? SAM: We spent a weekend in San Francisco and he spontaneously suggested that we leave a little early and take the Highway 1 through Big Sur home. I had never been and always wanted to go. We pulled over at a secluded spot to check out the view and just as we were about to walk back to the car he grabbed my hand and said he had a question for me... and then down he went on his knee and popped the question. Let’s talk about your ring? Todd proposed to Samantha with a fun, "temporary" ring. He knew his stylish bride would enjoy designing a custom one. (Nice work Todd!) SAM: I work in the fashion industry and I've always been super picky about what I wear, especially when it comes to jewelry. So he knew that this was the way to go. What is your inspiration behind the design? SAM: I wanted a classic, timeless design. We went with a round diamond set in a four-prong setting - a slightly more modern version of a vintage ring I had seen and liked. Who is making it for you? SAM: A family friend. Do you have any wedding prep questions that Flutter can answer for you? SAM: Yes! I'd love some tips on creating a timeline with the planning process. I've been looking and haven't found a good one. Ask and you shall receive! Click thru to the next page and have fun planning!

ALEXANDRA KOLENDRIANOS
An extraordinary wedding planner with a diverse background in special events. Her sparkling personality and attention to detail has attracted many clients throughout the country.

Congratulations on your engagement!
Here is a starting point and check list to get you started with the planning of your special day. Not everyone wants to take 8 or more months to plan their wedding, so please use this as a guide to get you started regardless of the time that you have prior to your engagement. I planned my wedding in 4 months, so anything is possible!
8 MONTHS
BUDGET & ORGANIZATION - The first thing that you want to do is put together your budget. This will dictate a number of things such as how many people you are able to include and what type of venue to consider. I would suggest creating a budget template on your computer so that you can continue to update and maintain it. As you start your process, put together a wedding binder to facilitate your organization. PUT TOGETHER YOUR GUEST LIST - Sit down with both of your families and make your list early on. CHOOSE YOUR VENUE & DECIDE ON YOUR WEDDING DATE Choose a location that you both feel is a reflection of the two of you. PURCHASE YOUR WEDDING DRESS Once you finalize and confirm your venue, begin looking for your wedding dress. Your venue will give you inspiration of the "look" for your dress.
DECIDE ON BRIDAL PARTY ATTIRE
HIRE YOUR BAND OR ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE DAY (ceremony, cocktail & reception music) HIRE YOUR OFFICIANT - I like to find the right officiant for my clients at the beginning of the process. The reason that you are pulling together this special day is to have your closest family and friends watch you get married, so try not to leave this until the last minute. Plan ahead and find the right person to marry you (if you don't already have a special relationship with someone). SEND OUT YOUR SAVE THE DATES - Save the Dates should be sent out 6-8 months prior to your wedding. Feel free to send them out earlier if you are planning a destination wedding. And, be sure to have your registry complete prior to sending out your Save the Dates. Be sure to update your registry closer to the wedding as well. HIRE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER - Choose a photographer whose work you have seen. Be sure it moved you. CHOOSE YOUR FLORIST - Sit down with your floral designer and begin to concept the look and feel of your wedding. Most florists like to get a sense of the entire picture and then begin concepting and creating. 28
6-8 MONTHS
HIRE YOUR VIDEOGRAPHER
DESIGN AND FINALIZE ALL TEXT FOR YOUR INVITATIONS PLAN YOUR HONEYMOON DESIGN AND HIRE ALL VENDORS THAT MAKE UP YOUR DECOR FOR THE DAY FOOD AND BEVERAGE TASTING WITH YOUR CATERER OR VENUE - You will finalize all details that pertain to food, beverage and service at this time. Decide if you want to do a champagne toast at guests entry into your reception, if you want to do a specialty drink during cocktail hour and also outline the reception flow at this time (how much time is needed to serve each course, when speeches will happen, etc.).
4-6 MONTHS
PURCHASE GROOM'S ATTIRE
SCHEDULE A HAIR AND MAKEUP CONSULTATION - And then hire your specialists (assuming that you love the look and feel from the trial). Discuss all details of when you will need to be ready and how many girls will be getting their hair and makeup done.
2-3 MONTHS
SEND OUT YOUR INVITATIONS Etiquette says to send out your Invitations 6-8 weeks prior to your wedding. However, so many people are planning destination weddings and want to give there family and friends enough time to make plans while at the same time are wanting to know what their final count might be. So feel free to send out your invitations 8 weeks prior to the wedding (with your rsvp's due 4 weeks prior). DECIDE & FINALIZE SPECIFIC MUSIC FOR YOUR WEDDING Song to be playing for your processional, bridal processional and recessional. And what songs will be played for your first dance, father/daughter dance and mom/groom dance. PURCHASE THE RINGS FINALIZE YOUR CAKE DESIGN I always think it is nice if your cake design is a compliment to your overall decor or theme of your wedding. BOOK ANY TRANSPORTATION NEEDED & RECONFIRM YOUR HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS PUT TOGETHER A PHOTO LIST FOR YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER This is helpful for your photographer to know what group shots are a "must".
PUT TOGETHER YOUR SEATING CHART
PUT TOGETHER WEDDING DAY TIMELINE - Be sure to send this out to all of your vendors along with vendor specifics (address of venue, attire specifics, etc.) as well as any layouts. RECONFIRM ALL CONTRACTUAL TIMES WITH YOUR VENDORS ENJOY THE TWO WEEKS LEADING UP TO YOUR WEDDING All should be wrapped up two weeks prior so that you can relax, enjoy a spa treatment and begin to soak in the days leading up to your wedding.

From its colors to its prints and textures, African design has inspired everything from fashion to interiors. With this shoot I aimed to take a look that most brides would see as risky and turn it into something chic, sophisticated and timeless. The result is a contemporary take on South African design done in soft neutrals with pops of other colors common to the African palette. I wanted the groom to look dapper and refined, with a casual African touch. The hallmark of the grooms look was the sweater by the incredible Laduma, whose knitwear line - Maxhosa by Laduma is inspired by the fabulous designs seen on the outside of some traditional homes in Southern Africa. I paired the great button down sweater with a bow tie (made by my Mother!) in an African print and some khakis for a modern take on the country club look. To show off the exceptional beadwork so common in South Africa, I put a Swazi necklace on him as well and chose a great small Airplant for his boutineere. For the bride I knew I wanted to highlight the bohemian look and decided to go with separates, which is traditional in many parts of Africa. I found some fabulous African prints and had my Mother sew a cute shirred top to match with a great mermaid style skirt. Halfway through the shoot we switched out the top for a sheer cream off the shoulder piece for a more refined look. I highlighted the beadwork again in the brides earrings, which I found at Urban Outfitters! 32

textures found in nature The table design was inspired by the textures found in nature and within the home. The wood table from Élan Event Rentals was the perfect backbone to the look. To mimic the grass mats found in most traditional South African homes, I chose a grass runner. I created texture in the florals with the quintessential South African flower, the Protea, mixed with garden roses and other foliage nested in woven grass bowls. Rather than using plates, I chose bowls for the traditional stews so often served in African homes. For the silverware, I collected driftwood on the beach and molded ceramic clay onto them.
kurt boomer photography 35
For the ceremony look I wanted to accentuate the aisle with woven baskets and foliage. I put rose petals in baskets for guests to throw on the couple, as well as clusters of Proteas to mimic the just-picked farm-look. The stationery was inspired by African pattern, texture and color. Seating arrangements were held in a beautiful piece of cholla bark, and vintage African stamps highlighted the whimsical and authentic invitation set.

Whisk in extra virgin oil and remaining 1 Tsp. hazelnut oil. Taste & correct seasoning. winter sangria 2 honeycrisp apples One 750-milliliter bottle unoaked Chardonnay 1/2 cup peach schnapps 1/4 cup orange blossom honey 1 orange - quartered 1 lemon - quartered 1 lime - quartered 2 cinnamon sticks 2 quarter-size slices of fresh ginger 3 whole cloves 2 Tbsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon Large ice cubes Club soda
Directions: Peel, core and chop one of the apples. In a bowl, combine the Chardonnay, schnapps and honey. Add the quartered orange, lemon, lime, cinnamon sticks, chopped apple, ginger and cloves and refrigerate overnight. (If you can't wait that long at least give it 4 hours). Strain the sangria into a pitcher. Slice the remaining apple (leave the skin on for color). Stephanie Sanders of Shindig Events Stephanie (like us) is inspired by the endless, natural beauty of Santa Barbara, handmade items, texture, Kinfolk dinners, mixing styles and patterns, and travel. She loves a chic backyard bash and judging by her company name, we think anything shindig she throws will be top notch. www.shindigsb.com
On a small plate, blend the sugar and cinnamon. Moisten the rims of the glasses and dip it in the cinnamon sugar to coat. Fill the glasses with 1-2 large ice cubes. Pour in the sangria until threequarters full. Top with a splash of club soda. Add the apple slice and enjoy. 55

Artisan Chocolatier HANDMADE GOURMET CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES
Featuring JESSICA FOSTER CONFECTIONS Photography |JOSH GRUETZMACHER Styled | KELLY OSHIRO
57
Truffle [noun] - A small round ball of
ganache, chocolate and cream, often flavored and rolled in cocoa.
Ganache [noun] - A smooth and
velvety combination of solid chocolate and cream mainly used as a filling.
Truffles are a true work of art. The luxurious French-born confections are designed to satisfy the sweetest teeth. One little bite-sized ball consists of many flavors, aromas and textures that will melt in your mouth and in your heart. The original truffle started as a simple combination of heated cream and chocolate rolled into a ball, redipped in chocolate and then dusted with cocoa. Chocolatey, sweet, salty, savory and even spicy, the modern-day truffle has taken on a whole new
level of decadence, enrobed in chocolate and topped with exotic flavors from around the world. Santa Barbara chocolatier, Jessica Foster, creates a variety of handmade gourmet chocolate truffles with only the finest ingredients. Blended to perfection, hand-dipped and rolled, each is truly a little bite of heaven. 58

Recipe
LIQUOR INFUSED MILK CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES - 12 ounces milk chocolate (chips or bar) cut into small pieces - 1/2 cup heavy cream - 1 ounce butter - 2 Tbsp liquor (whisky, frangelico, tuaca‌anything you’re in the mood for) - Chocolate for dipping - Cocoa powder for dipping Place chocolate in a heat proof bowl. Heat cream and liquor in a small pot. Let it come to a boil and pour over chocolate. Stir to combine and then add butter. This will create your chocolate ganache. Once butter has melted, cool ganache, stirring regularly. Create quarter-sized balls by using a scoop or spoon (you may also use a piping bag). Chill as needed in order to form fairly round balls (approx. 1 hour). In another bowl, melt chocolate for dipping. Dip balls into chocolate and coat in the palm of your hand, then drop in cocoa powder. Roll around to coat evenly. Enjoy! Compliments of Jessica Foster Confections www.jessicafosterconfections.com 63

TOOLS
Brush Curling iron Bobby pins (the color of your hair) Hair elastics (small clear ones) Flexible hold hairspray
72
Fishtail Braid 1:
Curl entire head spraying each section with a flexible hold hairspray before and after. (I took large sections and used a 1" barrel, you can use a larger barrel for less texture or smaller for more)
2:
Pull hair to the side you want the braid to go. Pull one small piece from the furthest side and one from the closest side and criss-cross them over the center of the hair.
3:
Keep pulling small sections from each side, criss-crossing each one from the last. Keep the braid tight and secure.
4:
When there is no more hair to grab, begin taking small sections from the back of each section (there should be two) and crossing them over to the next.
5:
For a finished look, hide the elastic. Take a small section from the ends hanging from the elastic, hair spray the small section well and wrap around the elastic, being sure to cover it. Take a bobby pin that matches your hair color and catch the tail of the small section and push it up into the braid from the back. 73
watch video
PRO TIPS
Continue all the way to the ends and finish with a small elastic. For a looser look, pull and spread apart the braid from itself. Pull down any pieces you may want to frame the face. Spray entire head with hairspray.
For further clarification the fishtail braiding technique, check out our video with step-by-step instructions.
low Fishtail Bun 1: Braid a fishtail braid. You can do this on the side of the head or centered in back.
2: Take the completed fishtail braid and roll it under all
the way to the nape of the head. (I rolled it under, but you can also try rolling over!)
3: Take bobby pins and secure the style from the inside,
being sure to lock your pins by criss-crossing them with one another.
4: Finish your style by pulling down any pieces you may
want to frame the face. Spray entire head with hairspray.
high Fishtail Bun 1: Pull all of your hair to the top of the head and secure with a elastic. Pull any bangs or face framing pieces down during this step.
2: Once you have your ponytail, begin fishtail braiding it.
You can start with two large sections and pull small pieces from each side criss-crossing one another, or begin with one large section taking small sections from either side, criss-crossing one another in the center. Complete the braid and secure with an elastic.
3: Wrap the braid around the base of the ponytail, tucking in the ends and secure with
bobby pins. I like to start with pinning the 'four corners' of the bun, being sure they cross in the center and then adding more as needed. Spray entire head with hairspray. 74
PRO TIPS
To avoid getting bumps in the style, take an elastic, slide two bobby pins on either side of it. Once you have your hair where you want it, slide one pin down the top of the base of the ponytail, then wrap the elastic around the base and slide the second bobby pin up from the bottom of the base crossing it with the first pin.
